APPLICATIONS!
Currently: Closed!
Route 29 has closed as of May 30th. For the continuation of the game, please visit [community profile] victory_road!

Applications will be normally checked during the weekend following the first and third Sunday of each month unless otherwise stated, and we will allow one application per person during one application cycle. Remember, the most characters one player can have at a time is currently set at five.

Applications received after 11:59 PM EST on Saturday of the first and third weekend of each month will be checked the following app weekend unless otherwise stated.

We now ask that potential applicants post their application in comments rather than linking. If their application contains explicit references to 'hard' spoilers (character death, unforeseen plot twists, big reveals, he was evil all along etc), players should put the application in their own journal or their character's journal and link it, making sure to mention the presence of spoilers within. For further clarification on our spoilers policy and whether or not your application needs to be linked, please check this page. Thank you for your cooperation!

The comment character limit on dreamwidth is 16,000 characters so apps no longer need to be split into multiple comments; however this is at players' discretion.

Character
Name: America
Series: Axis Powers Hetalia
Timeline: Late 2000
Canon Resource Links: Wikipedia Link

Personality: AMERICA IS THE HERO. If there's a problem, America is your go-to guy! Okay, sure, he might not always fix something exactly how others would, and your situation might end up more Things America Likes than Things You Asked For, but hey, his heart is in the right place, okay! Your life would have totally sucked without him!

America really does have a heart of gold, and a strong desire to help those in need. He just has a tendency to act without thinking, or to get caught up in his own ideas and forget that his preferences aren't everyone's. He's fairly shortsighted as well, and doesn't always remember to factor in what will be most beneficial in the long run when deciding on a plan of action. That being said, he has an incredibly acute sense of right and wrong, and he won't stand by idly while injustice is done! He just really really wants to help everyone, and only partially because he wants the recognition and adoration that comes with being a hero! (That doesn't mean he won't occasionally take a little more credit for things than he deserves.)

On the other hand, he's also the type of person that gets pissed off and can hold grudges for a long-ass time. Probably the most obvious example is his ongoing animosity with Russia. Despite the fact that the Cold War has been over for over 20 years, Russians are still the stereotypical movie villain, and even mild socialism freaks him out. (On the other hand, he doesn't seem to have nearly as much trouble dealing with currently Communist China-- probably because he gets a lot of cheap crap out of the deal). There are some things America just doesn't like, and will therefore declare them to be unilaterally bad without a whole lot of supporting evidence. Or sometimes even when there's evidence to the contrary-- he's very good at ignoring facts in favor of his own reality.

America's also kind of an airhead. Despite having a brilliant mind for science (some of the greatest inventions and scientific advancements of our time have come from America after all!) he tends to lack common sense. He more or less operates on a different wavelength than the rest of the world-- marching to the beat of his own drummer, if you will-- which sometimes gives him a hard time understanding why other countries would do things the way that they do, and definitely gives most other countries a hard time understanding why he does what he does (just look at his "screw the rules I do what I want" continuing use of the imperial system).

America is energetic, friendly, and helpful to the majority of people he meets, and for a lot of people, that's probably all they'll see. Charming, entertaining, but ultimately pretty shallow. America often gets read as naive, or an idiot, or someone who can't read the atmosphere, because he always presents a positive, upbeat attitude and childlike enthusiasm for things. It's not that his outward persona is fake, but it is... emphasized. America loves to be liked and he loves to make friends, so, like any politician, he presents the public face that will be most appealing to his audience. It's not hard. But for those that he's very close to, there are a lot of deeper emotions there under the surface that he can have a hard time processing himself.

Probably the easiest example to point out is his relationship with England, historically and currently. As a child, looking up to England as a mentor and father-figure, America idolized and idealized him. Even his disgusting food was perfect in America's eyes. But as America grew and came to learn more about the world-- as his citizens grew discontent with monarchy and began to discuss revolution-- America began to realize that England was not the perfect being that he had always seen him as. He had flaws, and big ones-- America was angry, but more than that he was heartbroken to learn that the person he had loved so much wasn't what he had thought. Though their relationship eventually mends after the revolution into a peer relationship (in which both continuously give each other a hard time), in the America's Storage Cleaning strip we learn that America can't bring himself to get rid of the toy soldiers that England had made for him when he was a boy, since they hold too many memories of his once-idealized guardian. But neither can he bring himself to get rid of his old scratched musket, with its memories of the times they bitterly fought. (He would be terribly embarrassed if England knew he kept any of that stuff of course-- heroes don't get sappy over old toys!)

In a similar vein is his relationship with Canada. Since they met as children, and grew up together in a way, they refer to each other as brothers and are fairly close. And although America's domineering personality generally pushes Canada to the background, he's actually possibly one of the only countries who can really get under America's skin and get him to back down in an arguement. In one strip, a typical siblingesque argument between the two, picking at each other's faults, quickly turns into a three hour rant from Canada that actually reduces America to tears. While he and Russia may antagonize each other near-constantly, he definitely has an easier time letting the insults roll off his back and returning fire than when his flaws are picked out by someone who he's close to.

In his downtime, America just likes to chill out and relax, playing video games or watching TV. Because he hates the cold, he'll spend most of the winter hanging around in his pajamas in front of the television with a big supply of snacks. He's got a thing for horror movies and games that Japan gives him, even though he is absolutely terrified of ghosts (then he ends up dragging whoever happens to be around-- England, Lithuania, Japan-- into bed with him so he won't have nightmares). On the other hand, when the weather is nice, he enjoys outdoor activities as well. He's crazy about sports (baseball being his favorite), and loves to go to the beach. He also likes to tinker around with things, and ends up making weird inventions that the other nations don't understand.

Strengths/Weaknesses: America is quite physically strong (supernaturally strong, in canon, although in Route he will merely be a particularly strong human) and has several centuries of experience in combat, tactics, and politics. (Of course, he's also an airhead, so he often acts before thinking, but he can be cleverer than he lets on.) America also has a particular affinity for science and technology, especially if it relates to aviation, aerospace, or astroscience.

When it comes to weaknesses, America's rashness and shortsightedness are often his fatal flaws. He's all about instant gratification, so he will often make decisions without considering the long-term ramifications, in favor of what seems will work best for him at the moment. He also has trouble reading the atmosphere and picking up on how others are feeling, so he may come off as callous or self-centered. He takes very poorly to having his flaws pointed out to him. He also has an acute fear of ghosts and other spookies.

First Person Sample: [Hello pokepeople. Have a blond doofus. He looks distressed about something. I wonder why?]

Hey so like, can anyone tell me what's up with that Sprout Tower? I mean like... is there anything good in there? Like for training or whatever. 'Cuz-- [His eyes dart quickly away from the camera, glancing skyward, then to the ground, and finally settling on his pokemon pal] --Liberty keeps flippin' out whenever we walk by it, so I was thinking maybe we should skip it. 'Cause that probably means there's something bad up in there. Ahahaha-- right? [Awkward smile :Dd] I mean I wanna be the Pokemon Master an' all but I don't wanna give my little guy a heart attack y'know? So I mean it's not worth it unless there's like something really cool that'll make him really strong or something. But probably not. I mean, it's just some old tower, right?

Third Person Sample: Welcome to the world of Pokemon. It was the sentence every ten-year-old with a Gameboy dreamed of hearing, so naturally America, being an overgrown ten-year-old boy at heart, was instantly over the moon. Pokemon. Pokemon for real. Or at least, if it was a dream, he hoped it would be a nice long one. (He didn't have any stupid meetings the next morning, did he--? That's not the kind of stuff you think about in dreams! Do you?)

Well anyway, whatever the heck was going on, he was definitely gonna make sure he enjoyed it while it lasted. Taking the pokeball he had been given in quivering hands, he tossed it dramatically to the ground. "Pokeball, go!" Please be a charmander, please be a charmander.

"Ruff!"

Well, it wasn't a charmander. America stared at the little creature that had appeared in front of him with eyes like dinner plates. As if he had thought this dream could get any better, a friggin' bald eagle pokemon. Either he'd died and gone to Heaven (pretty unlikely), or his subconscious was way cooler than Japan's (duh), because he didn't remember any pokemon like this and he definitely would remember.

"Ruff, ruff!" Apparently tired of being ignored, the little bird launched itself at America's chest. America remembered that he had forgotten to move and collected it up in his arms, nuzzling his face into the soft ruff of feathers.

"What's your name, little buddy?"

"Rufflet!"

"Rufflet, huh?" America grinned. "Well you're my pokemon, and that makes me your trainer! So from now on, I'm gonna call you-- Liberty!" Rufflet chirruped happily and bonked its beak against America's glasses. America laughed. "Aw man, you and I are gonna be the best like no one ever was."

Character
Name: Frank Archer
Series: Fullmetal Alchemist (2003 anime)
Timeline: Just before Archer is fit with the automail, after the array in Liore has gone off.
Canon Resource Links: FMA Wiki. All of the information here applies - though it is worth mentioning that in the first anime the city is named "Liore" instead of "Reole." There are several differences between the first anime and the manga/Brotherhood when it comes to the names of places and people - I will be using the dub of the first anime for these. Again, Archer is taken before the automail is attached, meaning that he is actually mentally stable (to some extent).

Personality: Archer's personality depends on who you are, or rather, if you're in a position of power or not. To his superiors he's a charming, hard-working officer with a more reserved look on government and society at large. To anyone he doesn't consider useful, he's a complete jerk. The two sides don't seem to properly fit together until one realizes that Archer is a cunning manipulator. His smarts lead him to believe he's superior to everyone, including those he's quite charming toward. Even if he must push his ego aside, it's only for a limited time. Archer doesn't seem to hold a high level of respect for the Fuhrer (due to the fact that he knows the Fuhrer is a Homunculus; something that immediately gives him an edge over the Fuhrer), and is often contrary to the point of defiance in discussion with him. He shows less and less respect toward his superior officers as the series goes on.

War is Archer's favorite thing. His determination to start a war in Liore is only further proof of this. While war has strengthened his nation in the past, Archer does not seek to start a war for that prospect. He loves strategy and planning, but especially loves the thrill of a fight. Any excuse to kill without reprecussions is one he is willing to take. He passes it off as wanting to be a "war hero" like Mustang, but in reality he simply "likes war," according to one of the soldiers who worked under him. This seems to be common knowledge within the military, but Archer hasn't actually done anything that could be considered illegal. Archer knows his views aren't common and are definitely not normal; he's very careful not to say anything that could get him thrown in prison. Kimbley is the only person he's met who shares any of his beliefs, and he was in prison for ten years for killing his superior officers during the Ishbal War. He obviously doesn't want to end up like Kimbley, and spends the majority of his time attempting to appear normal. While he can pass for normal, he does give off an inherently creepy vibe. He doesn't seem to notice this.

Archer has a severe lack of morals in most areas of life. Society's "morals" concerning life and war scarcely affect him. He's willing to use others as tools to achieve his own ends. He tends to come off as inhumane and cruel when discussing those morals, but it's not entirely without benefit. He can actually argue that without morals to "get in his way" he's not forced to think about "what's right." This makes him (in his opinion) the perfect soldier. His lack of morals make him dangerous, but he would be right at home on the battlefield. Unfortunately (in his opinion), he's never seen battle.

Archer is easily angered and frustrated, but most other emotions are hidden under an outer layer of cool detachment. While he is usually level-headed and takes the time to think his actions through, when he's angry Archer doesn't stop to think. Archer doesn't like showing any weakness whatsoever, and he considers most emotion to be a weakness which can be used against him. Likewise he considers friends to be similar and keeps very few. Allies, on the other hand, are always useful (at least until he decides they aren't, in which case friendy fire is always a suitable option). His cruel ruthlessness both on and off the battlefield are terrifying, leading many to whisper behind his back that he's not only a warmonger but a sadistic, inhumane monster as well. As long as they can't prove it, Archer considers himself safe. He finds it rather ironic that they call him a monster while working for one.

Those that work under him would indeed describe Archer as a monster. He's ruthless when it comes to his officers and works them to the bone. Perfection is expected and even a small mistake (be it grammatical or a numerical error, or perhaps even spelling when Archer's really in a foul mood) can result in severe punishment. His own paperwork is known for being error-free, and he expects the same of his subordinates (even though he is ultimately sure that they are incapable of it). It's more of an ego-booster than anything else (not that he needs one).

Due to having previously been in Route, Archer's personality has altered some. He's still just as devious and clever as always, but he's a bit more calm than he was when he first arrived. He's formed a very strong bond with Kimblee which has helped him adapt to life in Johto much easier than he would have on his own. That friendship with Kimblee was a major turning point for him - it was proof that his friendship with Kimbley wasn't a fluke and that he is capable of making other friends and forming lasting relationships that are admittedly kind of creepy. Archer has mellowed out a lot due to being in Route instead of the war-driven society in Amestris, though he still seeks to make his mark on the world and have everyone recognize him... through taking over the entire region. Yes, he still wants that.

Strengths/Weaknesses: ✔ Archer is a very skilled orator. He's quite good at talking - be it convincing others, speaking to large groups, or lying through his teeth. He can hide (most) emotions behind an eloquent speech. He is usually very blunt and to the point though, which can make him seem rude or insensitive. He is.
✔ Archer is smart - he's well educated and clever. His "street smarts" are severely lacking though. There are very few situations that Archer cannot get himself out of. He confronts the Fuhrer about Laboratory Five without showing any sort of fear about possible repercussions (at that time, it's heavily implied he knows that Fuhrer Bradley is not human). While this may make him seem reckless or even fearless, it's really more of a matter of knowing how to get what he wants (in this case, Kimbley and Tucker's reinstatement into the military). What he lacks in experience he makes up for in knowledge. He's quick to learn and even quicker to try and find answers to any questions he has. Archer can't stand not knowing what's going on around him. Hughes, Archer's former superior officer, was killed because he discovered what was going on within the military. Archer figures out what's going on not long after Hughes's death; he is one of the few who does know what is going on within the military.
✔ Though he isn't well-known for it, Archer is good with firearms. He tends not to think before pulling his gun though (evidently Edward Elric's short rants are just enough to get him ready to shoot - even if Edward is a child, not that he cares much about that). Of course, that doesn't really serve any purpose in Johto, since he can't get his hands on a gun.
✔ When it comes to sucking up, Archer can't be beat. Well, okay, he can, since his huge ego can only take a certain amount of debasing. Archer will form "friendships" with anyone he deems capable of helping him achieve his goals. He won't hesitate to toss his friends under the bus should it aid him though. That might be literal. It's difficult to tell with him.
✘ Friendship has always been a problem for Archer. He doesn't have any close friends - nor does he need them - but there are times when having supporters would be useful. He tends to use those he does consider "friends" and is quick to rid himself of them. The closest person to him would be Kimbley, and unfortunately he got himself killed. Archer is a skilled leader and can actually get along well enough with those to work under him - several of his soldiers actively worry about him when the array goes off in Liore (not that he was capable of noticing this). Archer has difficulties trusting anyone, which is another reason why he doesn't make fiends.
✘ Archer is typically good at reigning in his emotions - save anger and frustration. He's quick to get pissed off, and even quicker to lash out (usually verbally, but if he's pissed enough he will lash out physically). He can go from perfectly calm to furious in a matter of seconds if the right buttons are pushed. He doesn't deal well with any emotions that aren't smug satisfaction. He's not very good at identifying his emotions as what they are and tends to read too deeply into them. This usually results in anger. ...Though most of his emotions circle back around to anger at some point anyway.
✘ A lack of "special" abilities hinders Archer in his homeworld. He's incapable of alchemy. Had he been capable of using the science he would have used it to achieve a higher ranking in the military early on. Instead he had to work his way up as a pencil-pusher. Archer thinks quite highly of himself, but his inability to use alchemy is the one thing that he really hates. He tends to be jealous of everyone who does have any "special" abilities, and that jealousy tends to turn into hatred. Possibly the only exception to this is Kimbley, who had the same twisted world view as Archer. That, and Kimbley can make anything explode.
✘ Archer tends to come off as cold and aloof. It isn't far from the truth. He doesn't interact with anyone he doesn't think he can use. This is especially detrimental within this world, as Archer doesn't know anything about this world or how it works. It also doesn't help that he dislikes his Team Rocket superiors. He refuses to be considered a "Grunt" due to the fact that he worked his way up from such a position back in Amestris. The fact that his "boss" has the name Archer is an irony that only serves to infuriate him further.
✘ He's very fickle. Archer will go after whatever he believes will aid him most in the long run. His goal is to become Fuhrer of Amestris - or at least go down in history as a war hero. Either way, he changes his mind repeatedly. Within the course of an episode he changes his mind four times (original goal was to find the Elric brothers and question them about the events at Laboratory Five. Then he found a chimera and wanted to capture it. Then he found a Homunculus child capable of using alchemy and wanted to capture him instead. Then when everything starts going wrong he decides to recruit Kimbley to work for him within the military.) Even when he gets what he wants, he's quick to change his mind about it and find something else worth pursuing.
✘ When it comes to fears, there really isn't much that holds Archer back. While he dislikes being seen as useless or weak, neither of these qualify as "fears." About the only thing Archer genuinely fears is dying before he's made a name for himself. Death itself doesn't scare him (though he isn't fond of physical pain of any sort), it's just the idea that he won't be remembered for anything and will have lived a "pointless" life.

Character
Name:Otoya Ittoki
Series: Uta no Prince-sama: Maji love 1000%
Timeline: Right after their debut (Not going to go into the second season until they have more of it)
Canon Resource Links: http://utanoprincesama.wikia.com/wiki/Ittoki_Otoya
http://myanimelist.net/character/40561/Otoya_Ittoki

Personality: Otoya is someone who is unmistakeably genuine. He is always seen cheerfully smiling or laughing and it's not a mask as it is in some cases of the general anime archetypes. He has seemingly limitless energy and bounces and bobs around his friends.

He has hopes as high as his spirits. He wants to become an idol and it's just as pure as that. He wants to become one just to become one! He doesn't have a hidden agenda, his parents didn't push him to, nor is he rebelling. An idol's job is to put a smile on peoples' faces and that is what he's set out to do.

In fact, he hasn't told anyone about his past thus far because he doesn't want to burden them with his troubles. Why should they worry about him about something that's already happened when he's perfectly fine about it now? He's not secretive, but he's not the type to dumb his baggage on someone when he would rather listen to and help with other peoples' problems.

Otoya also has a strong will to help people. It doesn't matter the situation or person, he will give it his all to help a person in need and see that they are in a good place again. He doesn't ask questions or ask for anything in return. He helps people solely for the sake of helping them and that makes him a truly rare type of person. He is also very good with children and extremely likable.

Otoya is also easy to fluster especially when his feelings are outed or if he feels left out of something. If someone bluntly states what Otoya might be thinking or feeling, he'll usually blush and flail a bit or internally babble as his heart beats wildly from either feelings or embarrassment. Or if someone is leaving him out of something or information that he feels that he needs, he'll whine and bounce around the person until either they give him a stern “No” or give into his energetic and sometimes annoying pleas.

Like in a true Aries fashion, he acts first and thinks later. He hasn't really displayed any of this in a situation that would put himself or someone else in danger. (Unless you count when he was all gung-ho about helping Syo with his fear of heights.) But in instances when Haruka or someone else suggested an idea, he was usually the first one on board to go along with it when others around him would hesitate with thought. Like the initial idea of everyone performing together, he was the first one to hop onto that train while others had their own thoughts. He didn't seem to put much thought into it before he said “Let's do it!”

Though this trait in the anime seemed more admirable because he was the one that supported anything the main protagonist suggested, in other situations it could get very dangerous.

But regardless, his “GANBATTE!” attitude wills him to see things through to the end no matter how dismal things are. He has a fiery passion that cannot be ignited! It's not a flame that will burn anyone, but provide warmth to anyone that wants or needs it.

His “type” in a typical boy-band setting would be the “Energetic one”. There's always that one boy who is jumping around the stage, bouncing around and getting everyone pumped with his infectious energy and that would be him.

He is athletic and in the game, it says that he loves playing soccer.

Otoya also isn't as stupid as he can come off being. He's childish, yes. Again, in true Aries fashion, he comes off more immature than he really is because of his childishness, but he understands his limitations and what he still needs to work on. He realizes that he still has a long way to go and a lot of growing as an idol. Next to talented people like his roommate Tokiya or mature people like Masato and Ren, he knows how inexperienced he is, but he won't let any insecurity hold him back or bog him down. That just means he has to try harder to make sure he doesn't let the group down. And with his attitude, he would never let anyone down, especially Haruka and St*rish.

Full Speed Ahead!
Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths:
Music: Getting into a prestigious performing arts academy with his skills in singing and guitar playing
Dancing: Being an idol requires great skill in rhythm and knowing how to move your body
Athleticism: He enjoys playing soccer and moving around all the time
Personality: As stated above, he is very high energy which will take him very far in his journeys
Personable: He has a way with people that could potentially change a situation from hostile to calm.

Weakness:
Inexperienced: Being a “normal” guy in Japan, his experience in survival skills aren't top notch. Even in his field, as stated above in the personality section, he knows that he has a lot of growing to do.
Act first, think later: In an adventure setting, well, this is never a strength.
Haruka: The girl he cares most about. If she gets into danger, most likely, so will he.
Keeping his Cool: He can get easily flustered and blustered especially when it comes to expressing his personal feelings. Keeping one's cool is essential when it comes to this sort of atmosphere.

Pokémon Information
Affiliation: Since he's got such a “FIGHTING!” personality, I think trainer would be best for him.
Starter: Groooooooowlithe. Because he's like a puppy. :3
Password: Strawberry Marmalade (Sounds like the title to a Japanese song)

Samples
First Person Sample:
[Otoya looks into his PokéConnect with wide, inquisitive eyes. He notices there's a little icon blinking saying that it's recording!]

Oooh...? I'm on air?! I should say something!

Uuuhm...let's see...

[He then gives the camera on the device his biggest and best grin. Don't want to come off as unfriendly or anything.]

Hello everybody! I'm Otoya Ittoki! Nice to meet you!

I don't really know what's going on here, so if anyone could lend me a hand, I'd really appreciate it! Heheheh!

Aaah... [He seems to be thinking of something else to say.]

Oh! And I'm looking for other people, too. I want to show them my new—ah-- pokémon! See? It's pretty interesting, isn't it? [He nods enthusiastically and points the camera down at his Growlithe who tilts his head at the sudden attention.]

So if any of you know anyone from a group called Starish or know a really great girl named Haruka, please tell me!

Thanks!
[He winks into the screen, giving it another energetic and genial smile before fumbling with the device and turning it off.]

Third Person Sample:
Otoya woke up with a start a little quaint bedroom in a little quaint town. He thrust himself upwards, the covers falling off of him and his red eyes widened with confusion. He heard a woman calling for him on the floor below and his attention turned towards it immediately. He hadn't heard that voice before, but it called out to him as if it were familiar with him.

He moved slowly out of the bed, his feet hitting something soft. He looked down and saw a canine-like creature coming right to attention at the touch. The creature looked up at him and he looked down at it. He blinked once, twice, three times wondering what it was. It wasn't any kind of dog he had seen before.

“Where did you come from?” he asked the pup aloud and it let out a barking noise in return then started wagging its tail. Otoya grinned at it. It was really cute and seemed to like him.

Otoya looked around the room again, wondering where he was exactly, but then the woman's voice called out to him again, beckoning him to come downstairs. Well if she really wanted him down there, then he had better get down there before she got mad at him!

He stood up and glanced over at a pack that seemed to be his. He grabbed it, slung it over his shoulder quickly, and started to head down. The dog-creature let out a whine, staying in place and Otoya's attention went to it immediately. He didn't want to leave the poor thing by itself.

“Heheh! Come on, let's go!” he chirped out to it and the dog hopped up happily to follow at his heels.

When he got downstairs, everything seemed to happen so fast. The woman prattled on about something about a journey and sent him out of the door! He didn't even get to grasp what this journey was about!

The redhead stood outside of the door confused with an obviously bewildered expression on his face and the little animal seated right at his feet. He watched with a wide, confused gaze as people casually walked by the small town with various creatures following behind them. He saw the humans and the beasts working in tandem, doing chores together, eating together, and playing together.

He looked down at the little puppy and wondered if it was his. But when? He'd never seen anything like this before. It was like he had accidentally fallen asleep with the television on and was having a weird dream.

The idol-in-training crouched down in front of the canine and smiled at it. “You wouldn't happen to know what's going on, would you?” he asked with a small laugh attached to his sentence. The little animal let out a little groooowlithe! in response.

“Eh? Growlithe?” The little pokémon moved around the singer and put a paw on his pack. “This? I should open this?”

He pulled the backpack around and set it out in front of him. The Growlithe nudged the opening of it to urge its new master to look inside. Otoya complied and opened up the pack, rifling through it. He saw the change of clothing, the handbook, the pokédex, the pokéConnect, and other such things. He let out an ooooooooh realizing that maybe he should have looked in this bag a little sooner and gave an abashed grin to the Growlithe.

“Let's see...There's a lot of stuff in here, isn't there boy?” he said. Or at least, he guessed it was a boy. He didn't really know how to tell. “Let's look at it later. First, we have to go find the others! They have to be somewhere around here. I just saw all of them not too long ago” he said with a nod.

He stood up straight again and gave a sure nod. “C'mon! Let's go!” he called out to his new companion and started to trot off around New Bark Town.

Name: Tokiya Ichinose
Series: Uta no Prince-sama Maji 1000%
Timeline: End of Season 1 of the anime
Canon Resource Links: http://utanoprincesama.wikia.com/wiki/Ichinose_Tokiya
Personality:
Tokiya is a very talented person, but the path of stardom is not always so simple, and he definitely makes it even more complicated.

Tokiya has made his debut before, not as himself, but as a character named, HAYATO. There is a stark difference from HAYATO’s and Tokiya’s personality that it’s hard to believe they are one and the same. HAYATO is energetic, cheerful and who sings with a lot of heart. Tokiya on the other hand is aloof, cold and he lacks the heart in his songs. Although, they act as separate people, you can see how they are truly connected. Both of their desires are to sing, and yet it is the other entity that hinders them from their ultimate goal. HAYATO has already has a career, but it is not in the direction that Tokiya wishes to go. And HAYATO’s once moving music loses feeling due to Tokiya’s own inner struggles.

Tokiya’s inner turmoil is due to not wanting to be HAYATO anymore. After his debut, Tokiya was hospitalized after an accident. He lost his aim, and found it once more by singing with young children in the hospital. Tokiya found he wanted to sing, but no longer as HAYATO, but himself. It is when Tokiya decides to take charge of his own future by attending Saotome Academy, that HAYATO slowly dies and Tokiya comes into his own.

By attending under the guise as HAYATO’s twin brother, it gives Tokiya enough breathing room to be his own person. And psychologically making it seem like he’s competing with a person, rather than a persona he created. He strives to beat his “brother” by singing better songs. Making sure he has the mechanics perfected. However, though the pitch and flow of his songs are good…his songs lack heart. This is because he lacks something, that emotion that would make him better than HAYATO.

Because Tokiya was posing as Hayato’s twin brother, he keeps people at a distance. Not wanting them to learn the truth of his double life. So he comes off as harsh, especially if he believes people want to use him to get closer to HAYATO. Which infuriates him even more, since HAYATO is who he’s competing against. Tokiya is also going through a lot of personal conflicts, so he unconsciously takes out his frustrations on others further isolating himself from his peers. Even with his roommate Otoya, he is very closemouthed. Not speaking much of his personal life, or refusing to give him straight answers.

Despite his anguish, he is a hard worker. He pushes himself to produce the best work, perfecting his singing so that the rhythm and pitch is perfect. He juggles a dual life as both an idol and a student. Often Tokiya does jobs for HAYATO during his off hours in school, only to come back late at night to Saotome Academy to attend class in the morning. Even when he is demoted from S class, he works even harder to prove himself. It’s a step back, but he focused on his goal. Even if it is hard for him to beat HAYATO, Tokiya doesn’t give up.

Even if he is aloof, there are people who have been able to influence him. Tokiya admires Otoya because he doesn’t have any pretenses of who he is. Otoya has a similar personality to HAYATO, but that’s Otoya’s genuine personality. It makes Tokiya strive to reach the point where he doesn’t have to pretend to be anyone else. Otoya seems to be the only person who knows how to make Tokiya react! The redhead is able to make him feel unnerved or bothered. Most people aren’t able to break Tokiya’s steady facial expressions.

It was because of Haruka’s resolve to hear Tokiya sing and make music for him, that Tokiya began to believe in himself. Haruka recognizes Tokiya as HAYATO right way. Though he is harsh to her because at the time, Tokiya is frustrated with HAYATO, she remains a constant presence. He doesn’t warm up to her, or try to befriend her. And Haruka didn’t push the issue, keeping her distance and slowly charming Tokiya with how involved she was in other’s lives. Her impact was one that initially started through observation. Tokiya didn’t want to pay her any mind, but her actions spoke louder than words. In the same way, her music spoke to him and truly transformed his idea of Haruka. When he is confronted by the rest of STARISH upon finding out he was HAYATO all the long, he replies that he had hope now that he could sing as Tokiya. Haruka was able to reveal this to him by heartfully wanting Tokiya to reach his dreams. This is why she has a special place in his heart and he wants to make efforts to be kinder to her.

Later in the series, we see a softer side of Tokiya. Now that he has hope in attaining his goal, he becomes remorseful for lying to the members of STARISH of his career. Thanks to Haruka’s influence, he finds himself not wanting to let the group down. He feels that these are people he will never meet again and the chemistry they have as a group is something he won’t find elsewhere. He is humble when he asks to be a part of STARISH, and he feels they are kindred spirits since they each want to sing Haruka’s songs and they all love her music.

Despite his agency not supporting his music career, he isn’t spiteful when the chairman falls ill. He helps him despite how the other was yelling at him moments before. Taking him to the hospital and not Tokiya doesn’t leave his side until he was feeling better. He willingly goes along with the jobs they give him despite not having the heart to do it. He feels obligated to keep his appointments. Not only because it is his agency, but as a professional he understands that it is his job. Tokiya is a perfectionist and he will not leave a job undone.

Upon finding his resolve, and realizing he can overcome HAYATO, Tokiya becomes a better person. He has allowed people to enter his world, and he lets himself to feel emotion. He doesn’t feel oppressed by his alter-ego, because he is free to be himself and do what he’s always wanted, to sing.

Strengths/Weaknesses: Tokiya is perfectionist, and he makes sure he succeeds in any task that is asked of him. Whether it is singing or acting, he always places his best foot forward and accepts any task. Despite already reaching success, he doesn’t allow it to go to his head, he is humble. Knowing high expectations are expected of him and Tokiya is prepared to deliver them.

Tokiya is also thankful for being able to have a second chance at a debut and also to perform as himself. Tokiya knows how to multitask, juggling HAYATO’s career and his school life at the same time. He was able to do both things effectively without his agency realizing, showing he’s effective in keeping a low profile. He’s careful not to mix the two worlds, and knows how to keep both aspects in his life, separate.

Tokiya is especially devoted to his singing, since it seems to be the only thing he wants to do, and not being able to sing with heart, crushes him. He’s especially devoted to Haruka since he doesn’t stray from her. He wants to sing the songs that only she makes, and he willingly sacrifices working with her solo to be a part of STARISH. He even stands by her when Saotome tests her resolve, refusing to be a part of the group without her.

However, Tokiya can push himself too hard, where he ignores his limitations. He forces himself to juggle two lives, being an idol and a student, and not giving himself a break. In one way it can be perceived that Tokiya has no backbone with his agency, but rather it is unwillingness not to let anyone down. There is a major indecision about whether he should be Tokiya or HAYATO mainly he doesn’t want to disappoint his agency or his fans. He feels obligated to do things, and sometimes he spreads himself too thin.

The manifestation of Hayato reveals Tokiya’s insecurity. He doesn’t feel he can obtain his dream alone. He compares himself to others, and even to his own character he created. He doesn’t feel that he’s good enough so that’s why he makes sure his techniques are perfect to make up for anything that he possibly lacks.

He suppresses himself emotionally, by inhibiting his singing ability, but also closing his heart off to others. Tokiya is not a very expressive person; he’s not one to confide in others unless he really trusts them. No one knew about his struggle except himself, and that created distance between his peers and also in Hayato’s ability to perform.

First Person Sample:
[The video opens up. It is dark, and the surroundings are wooded. The only light is from the flickering flames of a campfire. Tokiya is sitting by the fire with Shinx in his lap. He seems relaxed, his eyes watching the flames dance. Shinx in his lap ears are perked up, and his dark eyes watching the trees and bushes. He was a pretty territorial pokémon so he was guarding the area.

Then suddenly Tokiya begins to sing softly. The will to sing to just came to him, and he couldn’t deny it. Often at Saotome Academy, he would find a private spot to sing his heart out. The song is mellow and soothing; it easily lures Shinx to sleep, despite the young Pokémon trying to fight it.

Not only does it put Shinx to sleep, but it also brings out a few nocturnal pokémon as well. A hoothoot flies closer, perching itself onto a tree. The blue haired idol notices a few pairs of eyes peering at him through the darkness of the forest. It would have been a little unnerving to him if he just arrived, but he’s been camping out in the terrain for a while. And he’s become used to the presence of Pokémon.

What Tokiya isn’t accustomed to, is the nasty habit of his device recording him. He seems a bit displeased, but Tokiya keeps his cool.]

…So pokémon like music, too? [His hand reaches for a pokeball, but he doesn’t use it on the hoothoot. He merely looks at the ball as if considering something.] I can definitely use it as a lure tactic.

[Tokiya drops pokeball, and finding that the song has come to an end, the owl-like Pokémon flies off. The feed ends at that.]

Third Person Sample:
Pokémon? Being a trainer?

It all made his head spin. One moment he was settling down from the excitement with his debut with STARISH, and the next he found himself being pushed out of the door of an unfamiliar residence. Only for things to become more confusing as Tokiya went along. He was surrounded by ordinary looking homes, quaint and cozy. Unlike the bustling metropolis of Tokyo, Tokiya was used to.

“Tokiya? Aren’t you going to Professor Elm’s?” A by-passer said. Tokiya’s blue eyes widen, wondering how a complete stranger knew his name. Let alone the “mother” that pushed him out with nothing but the clothes on his back and a backpack filled with things she must have packed.

But the stranger had said Professor Elm, maybe he was supposed to go to him? Maybe this person could explain his situation. The blue haired Idol went off in search of the professor, only to find himself deeper in the situation. Now he had even more items, and he was more perplexed on his current state of affairs.

He looked to his pokedex, a device that was pushed into his hands. Along with a small creature who would be his companion.

“Shinx!” The lion-like Pokémon said excitedly as he stares up at Tokiya from the ground.

This all had to be a dream. Perhaps that debut gave him nightmares. But this couldn’t be a dream could it? It seemed to be real. That creature seemed real…even if he’s never seen anything like it before. He studied Shinx for a few moments, watching the lion-like creature shift to and fro, beckoning Tokiya to play with it.

“…So I’m supposed to train you?” He wasn’t that good with people, let alone animals. How could he possibly train this creature? He didn’t have a clue of what to do.

“…all I know how to do well is sing.” Tokiya said honestly, and he watched as Shinx looked at him attentively. Like an innocent child who didn’t know any better. “I don’t know how to train you.”

Tokiya moved to walk away. He needed to find a way out of here. As he walks he heard the echo of soft footsteps behind him, the idol slowly turned to see Shinx trailing behind him. The pokémon pounced onto his backpack still determined to play. Shinx’s claws tore open the bag and emptying the contents.

“Shinx!” He scolded the pokémon, going to retrieve his bag and picking the things that were scattered on the ground. He eyed Shinx,“…I’m freeing you. Go on.”

He gestured the pokémon away with his hand but Shinx didn’t budge, adamantly staying by Tokiya’s side. As Tokiya picked up the items, he found the trainer’s starter book. He lifted it up from the pile of stuff and began to examine it closely.

Well there was a book of how to go about this training; Tokiya couldn’t help himself from flipping through a few pages. After all he liked a good read. He then placed it down looking over at Shinx. The lion-like creature was still obediently by him. Looking upon him with such promise, how could he let him down?

Tokiya sighed. “Fine…I’ll train you.”

Maybe if he did this, he could find a way to return home. It was better than standing around doing nothing. He gently offered his hand out to Shinx, allowing the pokémon to sniff him. That was how you dealt with wild animals, right? Even if Shinx seemed pretty used to humans. This probably wasn’t going to help his singing, but there had to be a reason he was brought here. Perhaps in helping this pokémon, he could figure it out.

“You’re in my care….Yuusei.”

Personality:
The story of Aléxandros ho Mégas, better known as Alexander the Great, may sometimes seem like hyperbole, or even full on myth. But Alexander the Great was very real, and his personality is just as grand as his name suggests. In only 33 years of life, Alexander had created one of the largest empires in the world, spanning from the Himalayas to the Ionian sea, and was tutored by Aristotle himself. His settlements began the Hellenistic period, a span of Greek history between his death and the emergence of Ancient Rome.

Revered for his ability to band his army together, Alexander as a servant in Fate/Zero has a charisma status of A. This is above that of a king, which is rank B; it is the charisma needed not only to unite a kingdom, but an entire empire. The man was undefeated in battle and his loyal, experienced army is part of what guaranteed this. However, Alexander’s charisma carried not only to his people, but even to his most trusted steed (who is also a Heroic Spirit capable of being summoned in Fate/ canon). At ten years of age, Alexander tamed a horse that refused to be tamed by any other in the court, and his father Philip praised him, telling him that their kingdom of Macedon was too small for him and that Alexander must seek an empire befitting of his grand ambitions. Alexander named the horse Bucephalus, and until Alexander’s death, they were partners. Alexander had sensed fear in the horse and convinced him to trust him, and in Fate/Zero Alexander is shown to still carry this ability to see inside the hearts of others. He senses Waver’s fears and inspires the boy to dream, and accurately analyses the martyr-like rule of King Arthur. This characteristic of seeing into others and being able to inspire them is a trait on which his arc in Fate/Zero capitalises, showing that Alexander’s men will fight for him even to certain doom. His abilities even impress Gilgamesh, the King of Heroes, who before had seemed unimpressed with his other adversaries.

Though in Fate/Zero Alexander’s actions seem brash and ridiculous, the characterisation is not far from historical accounts of the great leader. As inspiring and grand as Alexander is, he is not without fault-- nor is he without immaturity. In Fate/Zero he butts heads with his summoner, Waver, over the use of trousers. This is not simply a comical addition but a reference; the king was purportedly known for his disdain for wearing pants. Alexander is also known to have sulked for days at a time when displeased. His life was also not without love and pain; though he married twice, he married once out of love. His marriage with that wife, Roxana, was stable, but Roxana miscarried children and the child that survived was born six months after Alexander’s death.

For his time, Alexander was known to have an impressive gathering of female friends, companions of a platonic nature completely separate from his rarely-used Persian-style harem. He was noted for not having forced himself upon Roxana while also being thoroughly infatuated with her, and formed very strong bonds with women, including Ada of Caria who adopted him as her son and the mother of the father of Alexander’s second wife.

In Fate/Zero he’s known for his affinity for video games and other such things. He is noble, overbearing both physically (standing at almost 7 feet) and in personality, and genuine. Though inconsiderate and wild, his greed benefited the happiness of those he conquered and it was his preference to win over his enemies by defeating them without killing them and controlling them without humiliating them. This behaviour extends even to battles outside of his own; when Kayneth’s order to Diarmuid would have dishonoured Diarmuid in his battle with Arturia, Alexander fights on the side of Arturia and helps to convince Kayneth to take back his command. Though he seems to at first use Arturia’s gender to dishonour her it is not his intention, and he admires her abilities as an individual; he even wished for her to become his ally. With Waver, though the boy’s inexperience and temper give him many shortcomings, Alexander is quick to bond with him and lead him on a personal level, securing Waver as a part of his kingdom as his retainer.

Godot is most easily described as a man of contradictions; both fiery in personality and temper yet cool in presentation and reception, he is simultaneously dedicated and laid back, serious and wry. It can be a bit much to take in at once, and he is described variably as a 'hot shot,' a 'mysterious man,' or just plain 'smug.' Each contains varying levels of truth, and he denies none of them. On first impression, Godot is a charming, suave, slightly sarcastic man. He exudes confidence and competence, and seems as comfortable with himself as is humanly possible; anyone who talks to him for any length of time, however, will find him not only snarky and idly self-deprecating but focused, dedicated--and possessed of a strange and unrelenting intensity. Despite his nonchalance when presented with difficulty, Godot is an obsessive, a man with a spark in his mind and a fire in his heart--a fire that has been dampened with 'age' and smothered by time, but a fire that smoulders deeply nonetheless, and his tired acceptance of his pending death has done only so much towards disguising it.

Death is a recurring theme for Godot; as a lawyer, of course, it is inevitable that death should enter the picture, but then a suspect witness slipped poison into his cup of coffee without his knowledge, and... well. He drank it. The damage to his body and central nervous system was devastating, and though they were eventually able to "bring him back from the dead," he was permanently altered by its effect. He lay in a coma for five long years. When he woke, he learned that Mia, the woman he loved, had been brutally murdered one year ago--and he himself would not live long without constant medical maintenance and supervision. His vision was completely ruined; the combination of poison and oxygen deprivation to the brain had left his optic nerves and visual cortex heavily afflicted. The visor he wears corrects this for the most part, although the colour red renders as white. Still, without it, he is as good as blind.

Godot has an air of cynicism about him, something guarded and knowing, and his humour is often dark--if not incomprehensible altogether. His sanity has been questioned more than once, and it's very possible that the poison, coma, and time in between affected his brain in more ways than one. Emotionally, Godot is not exactly volatile--in fact, with very few exceptions, Godot seems to have very few strong feelings at all; perhaps this is why he is so unflappable, so fearless, and--ultimately--so unmoved by the things that shock and touch the people around him. According to him, such things have been seared out of him by the depths and fires of hell or have atrophied during his five long years in a coma, and he makes no claim to great emotional capacity; in fact, it's quite the opposite--in canon, Godot has occasionally made claims of being unable to feel at all. This is hyperbole, however--Godot is demonstrably capable of both anger and love. His anger is easier for him to face: it burns, low and hot and bitter, and he can seethe with it... or, without warning, manifest a rage so violent, sudden, and rare that its outburst can silence an entire courtroom.

His affections, while seemingly casual or careless (I'll be honest, he can also come off as a bit misogynistic) disguise a love so deep as to have consumed his guilt, his anger, his life... and his regrets.

Re: Godot || Ace Attorney || No Reserve

[personal profile] abittertruth 2013-05-04 11:03 am (UTC)(link)
Threaded throughout all of this is a strange sort of self-awareness, an almost unsettlingly blase attitude towards death and life; he is familiar with the threads of fate and fortune, and speaks of them as one might an old friend... or an old foe. He doesn't seem terribly put out by his death or the tragedy of his life, but upon closer inspection, there will always be a thread of bitterness running through the length of his narrative--like the coffee he so loves, it is bitter and black.

The hell he speaks of having endured--while largely metaphorical--is nevertheless real enough, and is yet fuel for the fire that still burns untapped in his heart. At this point, though, he is simply waiting--his health is always a matter of tricky balance, pain takes its toll, and exhaustion drains a great deal of energy from his body. At 34, Godot is now waiting, more or less, to pass on and rejoin his love--Mia, who he failed; Mia, who he respects more than possibly even himself--in the afterlife.

Perhaps the challenge (and commitment) of raising Pokemon will bring back the spark of life that he's been waiting for--poor substitute for the light of love, perhaps, but life, as they say, goes on.

And Godot has never been much of a quitter.

Strengths:
Motivation/Passion: Despite his ramblind metaphors, Godot is a driven, focused individual. His flame is as yet unquenched, and once he puts his mind to something, he pursues it doggedly--just ask Phoenix about that one.

Loyalty: Godot is incredibly loyal--and in that sense, honest. His refusal--inability--to let the Mia go is proof of this. He possesses a fierce tenacity and an almost inhuman refusal to give up on what matters to him.

Adaptability/Intelligence: Even when caught off guard, he thinks fast; his recovery is actually remarkable, and he's an expert at landing on his feet. You don't become an accomplished lawyer in his world without quick turns and quicker repartee. He processes information quickly--and, unlike some people from his canon, won't have quite as much trouble absorbing some of the weirdness of the Pokemon world. After all, he was in a relationship with a woman who could channel the dead--then killed her mother as part of an agreed plan to stop the the (not-so) otherworldly revenge of the dead woman who had previously killed him.

Education: He may be weird, but Godot is actually a highly educated individual. He passed the bar at least once, and quite possibly even twice--the second time right after waking from a five-year coma. He's also got a hefty dose of common sense--perhaps more than many people around him in canon--and a dash of street smarts to boot.

He is his own flashlight. (The red lights of his visor do in fact glow in the dark.)

Weaknesses:
Blindness: In canon, Godot describes his vision as "pretty screwed up." Without his visor, Godot is blind, or near enough; either way he's not getting very far. With his visor, he can see just fine... except for the colour red, which appears white to him. This will make the Pokemon world look especially strange, because red on white is a very common colour scheme.

Visor: The visor itself has a limited "battery life" and will leave him blind if it runs out of power. Fortunately, its charge lasts at least a day and a half, and he can turn it off when he removes it.

Health: Godot's health is a delicate balance at best, and while he can't die in Route, he can become increasingly exhausted and fragile without regular medical treatment. Pain is not an insignificant factor in the latter stages.

Indifference: This is generally a communication and public relations barrier. Godot's metaphors can get elaborate or even pointless, making him borderline incomprehensible sometimes--and he doesn't particularly care if you're following him or not. On top of that, he can often he can be, uh. Less than subtle. This is a man who thinks nothing of rudeness--he doesn't have any reason to care. He will tell you to go home, shut up, or just frankly let you know you're stupid--with or without a healthy dose of unflattering descriptor and/or invective.

Temper: Godot remains bitter about certain things, and his anger (and pain) still influences him a bit more than it probably should. He keeps a tight rein on it, but he can become preoccupied or even broody if it prersists. Certain things are just sore subjects, and the difficulty involved in reading his eccentric moods doesn't help--he can seem upbeat right up until you've pushed him too far.

Stubbornness: Godot's stubbornness can lead to obsessiveness, and he can be nigh-impossible to sway once he's made up his mind about something. When combined with the darker swings of his mood or nature, this can become very problematic.

Timeline: Post-canon, manga continuity

Personality: When one first meets him, Solf J Kimblee seems to be a nice man with a horrible reputation; he's spent a fair amount of time in prison - seven years, in fact - but it actually seems to have done him some good. Instead of becoming withdrawn or feral, as might be expected (most of his time there was spent in solitary confinement, after all), Kimblee is polite and conversational, the sort that will ask after your family and offer to help you with your bags at the train station; he's very well-kept - perhaps a bit overly fussy about his clothes and general appearance, but the white suit and neat ponytail seem to require a level of fussiness, and really...there are worse things to deal with than a little bit of vanity, right?

Of course, there's no denying that he's still a little quirky, though again, most of these quirks are harmless. His posture often seems uptight and closed-off, but he's a very vocal person, often humming to himself or singing when he's in a good mood; he's prone to thinking out loud and talking to no one in particular when something catches his attention, and he tends to talk with his hands, his gestures offering brief views of circular marks that appear to be tattooed into his palms. He'll be attentive when he actually addresses you, but it's often to ask questions about you that really should have obvious answers - things like why you're making a particular expression, or how you feel about something that you obviously found jarring enough to give a physical reaction to. He's very inquisitive, actually, and fascinated with human nature; at times he seems more like a distant observer of the human race rather than a member of it, though if that's pointed out to him he'll just shrug it off. He's aware of his own humanity; he just happens to find members of his own species fascinating, and he doesn't see why he shouldn't subject them to the same study as everything else - humans make very good subjects for analysis, you see, and understanding them is crucial to knowing how to act normal enough to get along with them.

...right. Yes. Well. That's...maybe that sort of talk might just be a sign that it's a good time for a subject change! Asking him about himself will actually yield plenty of results; for example, those tattoos on his hands are transmutation circles, arrays used to perform alchemy. He was once a State Alchemist in the service of the Amestrian military, after all; he'll make no secret of his backstory, nor will he skirt around the fact that he was involved in the Annihilation Campaign during the Ishval Civil War, serving as a human weapon and assisting in the genocide of a race of people, carving a crest of blood into Ishvalan soil. He isn't bothered by it; his description of it will be blunt and unflinching, but strangely enough, there's no coldness or distance to his tone - if anything, there's an odd sense of...is that fondness? And if you try to tell him that you're sorry for what he's gone through, he'll simply smile at you and ask you why. After all, he did well - he's responsible for the deaths of more Ishvalans than any other State Alchemists. He did what he was there to do, and he's very proud of his work.

...oh.

Bluntly put, Kimblee is a Chaotic Neutral force of nature, a sociopath in a nice suit; he does what he's good at and he loves what he does, and "what he does" seems to be throwing wrenches in everyone's well-laid plans, just because he thinks it would be interesting to watch everyone flail. Life simply isn't worth living unless everyone's standing a great chance of dying, as far as he's concerned - he adheres to a rather warped version of "to the victors go the spoils," believing that the right to live only belongs to those who are strong or smart enough to earn it. (It's important to note, however, that "earning one's right to live" doesn't necessarily involve killing one's opponent; if you're capable of outsmarting him, forcing him into a stalemate or just being lucky enough to find some way to escape him during a fight, he'll accept that as a temporary victory for you. He prefers not to have to escape from battle himself, finding it humiliating, but that's more a matter of personal pride than anything.) When it comes to survival, he holds himself to the same standard as he does everyone else, as to do otherwise would be hypocrisy - he'll gladly put his own life on the line if the situation calls for it. If anything, he hates watching other people do his work for him, especially since he's perfectly willing to get his hands dirty along with everyone else.

He's a nihilist, both morally and existentially, though leaving it at that is oversimplifying it; he doesn't believe that life has any sort of higher purpose, nor does he believe that killing is any more reprehensible than anything else that people can do to each other, but he doesn't deny the value of life in and of itself - after all, even if he doesn't think it has any intrinsic value, that life had to have mattered to someone, even if it's just the person who was living it before he killed them in the face. As such, he doesn't believe in forgetting the dead, or treating their deaths as trivial; he makes a point of remembering his victims, believing it to be disrespectful to do otherwise. Of course, this doesn't stop him from doing the killing in the first place...

The fussiness over his appearance mentioned back at the beginning of this section actually stems from something surprisingly relevant to all Kimblee does, and that would be a particular fondness for aesthetics and a keen sense for detail; this also extends to the way he utilizes his weapon of choice. Known as the Red Lotus Alchemist among his peers, Kimblee favors explosives - or, specifically, using alchemy to trigger unstable reactions in various substances he touches, causing them to explode violently. He strives to make these explosions as "beautiful" as possible, and he seems unsatisfied with sheer destructive power alone; most of his criteria for what constitutes beauty and what does not actually seem to be based around sound. He's a very aural person overall, actually, as most of the things he claims to enjoy are sound-based; of course, those sounds are also generally what most people would consider "really damn awful." Like loud explosions less than ten feet away - the louder, the better! Or the sound of people burning up or being crushed to death. Or buildings being destroyed. Oh, or the screams of the damned, as experienced from standing in the center of a maelstrom of torment.

Yes, really.

However! Kimblee is fully aware that indulging in these things at will and generally being a raving psychopath aren't exactly conducive to surviving in society - hence the earlier remarks about observing humanity. He's learned how to act and what to say to avoid revealing his "heresy," as he calls it, in front of people he can't trust or those in positions of authority - and so to most, he projects an air of amiability, even if he still comes off as a bit odd. He'll be civil, even gentlemanly to most people he meets; if he disapproves of someone or what they'll doing, he'll make no secret of it and won't sugar-coat his opinions, but at the same time he strives to remain classy and will usually avoid resorting to childish insults or taunts. His sense of humor, on the other hand, has a bit of a mean streak to it; for example, he's been known to play cruel or frightening tricks on others just for the sake of scaring them, but he makes it clear that it's all in good fun - he just likes to play a bit rough sometimes.

At the same time, it might be a good idea to keep on your toes around him once you realize that something isn't right; after all, he ended up in prison for blowing up the last group that didn't.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths
Given that Fullmetal Alchemist as a series is Incredibly Shounen, like several of the characters therein Kimblee possesses a good amount of sheer determination and tenacity (though admittedly it's to extents that may or may not cause a lot of facepalming to anyone observing, because really, man, sometimes enough is enough). Outside of possessing a ridiculously strong will to live at all costs, he doesn't give up easily in his everyday life, either, even when injured or not feeling up to his full potential. He doesn't like the idea of others doing his work for him; he refuses to take credit for things he didn't do, and if he's given a task, he wants to ensure that it'll be seen through to the end.

Kimblee has a very good eye for detail; though he claims he simply remembers those who happen to catch his interest, he actually has an eidetic memory. He retains the most information about people, as opposed to objects or his surroundings, with particular attention being given to remembering his victims; he never forgets faces, even those he's only seen once, and he can describe very specific details about even brief encounters.

He's rather intelligent, though his intelligence is geared more towards analysis and the gathering and processing of information. He's good at reading people, and knowing what to say to get them to open up to him; whether they're opening up in a positive manner (e.g., civil communication) or a negative one (e.g., screaming at him to shut his mouth) matters relatively little to him, as most people go - the point is that he finds out what he wants to know, and he's good at knowing what buttons to press to either calm people down or rile them up. He's also very aware of the emotional states of the people around him; he doesn't feel very much himself, but he's very sensitive to sharp swings in mood of those around him, and it's saved his life on a few occasions when people have decided to turn on him.

Despite the fact that he spent several years imprisoned in solitary confinement, Kimblee's physical fortitude is good, given that he managed to survive (albeit in critical condition) what probably should have been a fatal impalement through the left side of his abdomen; on a later occasion, he was still alive and at least vaguely conscious after having his throat slashed open, despite suffering the massive blood loss that comes with...well, having one's throat slashed open. His coordination and balance don't seem to have suffered too much, either, given that he's still able to do all the crazy parkour whatnot that seems to accompany the fighting style prevalent in the series with a reasonable degree of success. (The crazy parkour whatnot will be toned down significantly, as stated/requested in the FAQ. Much to Kimblee's annoyance, but really, that's more than half the fun.)

Weaknesses
Well, to pick up where the Strengths section left off - while Kimblee's balance and coordination haven't suffered, his speed and reflexes have. His physical response time has slowed down a lot since before his incarceration, and he's at a definite disadvantage in most fights where he has to rely solely on himself; this is greatly amplified when he's fighting someone younger than him, or someone who is smaller and therefore more agile. His skill and power as an alchemist is also something he's learned to rely on in confrontations; being in a situation where he isn't able to use that alchemy is only going to further disadvantage him against others - he can't fall back on what he's familiar with to get him out of situations.

He's also a very proud person; he tends to overestimate exactly what he can do, or sometimes underestimate what his opponents can do to him. This leads to a lot of trying to push himself too far, or taking on someone well beyond his current skill level and trying to defeat them anyway. He tends to get it into his head that he should be able to do something, whether it's realistic for him to actually be able to do it or not, only to realize when he's in the middle of getting completely trashed by his opponent that he's being unreasonable. The tenacity covered in the Strengths section also serves as a double-edged sword, given his pride; while sometimes he'll grudgingly acknowledge that he can't do something, that's usually only reserved for situations like "being in critical condition and unable to move without yanking out his life support." Otherwise, he's very stubborn, generally refusing to accept assistance or support from anyone unless he's directly ordered to work with them; even then, he makes it very clear that the only way that he allows others to back him up is by assigning them the esteemed position of "meatshield."

While it's rather difficult to make Kimblee genuinely angry - he can handle most insults well enough, though he'll get a bit linefacey about it - he doesn't respond well to condescension; he can handle those above his station being condescending, as it's their right, but being patronized or looked down upon by others who have no right to do so (at least, in his opinion) will make him snap. He's blindly aggressive when angered, and will usually do whatever he can to hurt the other person, regardless of potential danger to himself or others; if he doesn't succeed in retaliating properly, he'll go into a deep sulk, glaring at whatever's directly in front of him and completely refusing to speak to others or acknowledge anyone else's presence. These lockdown periods are incredibly rare, but when they happen, shaking him out of it is difficult, if not flat-out impossible; he'll be 'gone' for anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days, so it might be best to just find a chair and start wishing you'd brought a book, because he's not doing anything until he's good and ready to do something - and once he's decided he's ready, you'll probably be wishing he would sit down again, because the sheer force of his "Let's do this thing!" will be double what it was before.

Also, as he's taken post-canon...due to the way the series ended for him, it's reasonable to assume that he's not going to be too thrilled about the sheer amount of teeth some of these creatures have on them. He's also not fond of caves/enclosed dark spaces, nor is he thrilled with Ghost-types, as they're a bit too reminiscent of the entity that caused said ending.

[Kimblee is actually addressing the network via video today; if he's at all off-put about that whole disappearing-for-a-month-and-a-half business, it's not showing in his demeanor. If anything, there's a light smile playing about his features; it's admittedly a little creepy, almost as though he's trying to be endearing, but at the very least, he sounds amused when he speaks, so maybe it's not so bad.]

My, it seems this place does still have its sense of humor, doesn't it? And here I thought that perhaps I'd only lost three days at worst - it was a bit of a surprise to find out otherwise.

Ah, but that's neither here nor there, is it?

[He tips his head a bit, gesturing idly as he does so - a vague sweep of a gloved hand in the general direction of the device; that smile hasn't left him.]

There's not much to report from home, unfortunately; it'll be a pleasure getting in contact with all of you again, however - hopefully you've all been at least reasonably well.

[And with that, the feed shuts off; however, that clearly isn't it from Kimblee tonight. A few minutes later, another audio message goes out over the private Rocket network; his voice is cold and clipped, nothing like the amiable tone from earlier.

He has no idea if he still holds his rank or not; he suspects he doesn't. Like hell if he won't throw it around anyway.]

This is Team Rocket Beta Solf J Kimblee, reporting back in for duty; to my superiors, I admit that I don't know what happened, but I assure you that it won't happen again.

To my subordinates, you are to check in with me immediately - and I expect a full report regarding what happened here in my absence. This is not a request, mind you; however, as always, those that are useful will be rewarded. I'm good to those who are good to me; it'll serve you well to keep that in mind.

Third Person Sample:
While Kimblee couldn't say he had any idea how any of this had happened, he knew for a fact he was very, very displeased with it; the Voltorb he was currently dealing with seemed to share the sentiment, as it had promptly tried to shock him into submission. Thankfully, it didn't have the full range of attacks that Kimblee remembered it having - its level seemed to have dropped back down to thirty, as opposed to the eighty-eight it'd had when Kimblee had given up on it the first time due to it turning into an electrified ball full of rage and attempted murder.

At least the fact that it seemed to have devolved made it easy enough for Kimblee to lock the stupid thing in the closet, because really now.

"I suppose you're wanting some sort of apology," he said from his position at the desk next to the closet in question, seated with his arms folded and legs crossed idly at the knee; his tone was more than enough to imply the likelihood of that happening being somewhere between zero and none. Really, he was fairly sure trying to talk to this thing at all was highly indicative that he'd lost his mind somewhere along the way, but he was running out of options and his starter was not running out of obstinance. "Honestly, you're lucky that I'm trying to work with you at all, given that earlier display of yours - incredibly rude, by the way. I ought to box you again immediately for it."

That was just greeted with odd, staticky sounds that Kimblee didn't understand; however, from the sound of it, he wouldn't be surprised if the stupid thing was telling him exactly where he could shove that box of his. He just sighed, bringing a hand up to pinch at the bridge of his nose for a moment as though trying to ward off an impending headache; his lack of ability to believe this crap was not remedying itself.

"Neither of us have time for this. Do you at least understand what a ceasefire is, or is that expecting entirely too much?"

More weird staticky sounds; at least these sounded less openly belligerent. More questioning than anything.

"Ceasefire. It's exactly what it sounds like. Unless you want to spend the rest of your natural life, however long that may be, in my closet, we're going to have to call one."

Silence.

"...all right, listen. Once you reach level eighty-eight, if you still want to attack me you're more than welcome to try. I welcome the challenge, really, as by then I'm sure I'll need some excitement in my life again. But until then, I need a starter that isn't useless - and my second is rather useless - and I'm sure you're a bit discontent with the lower level, hm?" He leaned back against that chair of his, resettling before he spoke again. "So why don't we both adhere to Equivalent Exchange, call a truce for now, work with one another and all that, and when it comes to the whole wanting-to-kill-each-other thing, we'll cross that bridge when we get there."

It probably said something when negotiating with his murderball was the high point of Kimblee's week; however, given that a few minutes later he was able to let the stupid thing out of the closet without being immediately shocked for his effort, it definitely wasn't a loss.

[personal profile] achillean 2013-05-05 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: Waver goes through several stages in his development. To Fully understand them knowing the starting phase is necessary. At the start of Fate/Zero above all else, Waver is incredibly hardworking and ambitious. Even his biggest critics would have to admit that much. Whether his dedication serves him any use or is pointless effort for no reward is another thing. He believes ancestry alone does not determine a mage's power. Through deep understanding and study, careful practice, anyone can become an incredible magus. He sees himself as a shining example of this theory. As such, he spends all his time studying magecraft, so much so that he's quite weak physically and has fragile health. He describes himself as frail, but doesn't see it as a bad thing. Waver takes pride in every one of these facts, even though he admits he did almost nothing but study even in childhood. In his mind, this isn't a weakness, it's proof of his tireless dedication to study, proof of his great accomplishment in going from someone with no hope for anything other than mediocrity, to a top student at Clock Tower, the institute run by the Magus Association itself. He was someone they never would have considered at all, but through his hard work, eventually he was accepted. Even though he's only the third generation of magi in his family, and therefore possesses little natural talent, he climbed his way to the top. He has even written an exposition detailing the flaws of the current academic structure and mage hierarchy, as well as the ways in which those who are low on the hierarchy would be able to advance their magical powers. This paper took him the entirety of four years to complete, three of them in planning and researching, and one in writing. He saw it as his greatest accomplishment and was certain it would cause controversy and outrage within the Magus Association, as they would all know it was truth. From all of this, it's also quite easy to see just how much pride he has. Waver even sees himself as the greatest student the Clock Tower has ever had.

But, no one recognises his talent. The lecturers and other students of Clock Tower all see him as nothing but a low class magus foolishly dreaming of greatness. There is a great amount of corruption within the school, only magi of high standing are considered worthwhile to teach, therefore if someone like Waver tried to speak up in class or research in the library, it was rare he would even be given the chance. After all of his work, it's no surprise he became incredibly frustrated with this superior attitude towards him. He can't stand being looked down upon, treated as someone who isn't of any consequence - especially with all his pride in himself. It's something he can't even comprehend, why should these things matter, why does his knowledge and dedication mean nothing simply because he doesn't carry a famous name? He was laughed at time and time again for 'outlandish' theories, when they really were the truth and valid arguments, something he is very much aware of. However, even his crowning achievement was tossed aside and ridiculed by Lecturer Kayneth. Because of this and every other humiliation he suffered at the school, Waver despises that man along with many forms of authority.

He has quite a bit of pent-up anger and frustration because of all this, and it's something that comes out with little provocation. When he thinks he can get away with it, he'll certainly throw a fit, which is something that makes him look like nothing but a brat. He does have good reason for this frustration, but it tends to come out at the wrong time, and he really just whines and sounds like he's nothing but incredibly full of himself without reason. He's also something of a perfectionist. He won't settle for 'good' or even 'great', nothing but 'astounding' would even be acceptable, but what he truly wants is to be 'the best'. However, as his wish for the Grail is to be treated fairly and with the respect he deserves, it's evident he will accept nothing less than achieving his goal by his own means. The act of winning the Grail is much more important to him than the wish it would grant. In fact, at first he can't stand Rider because he makes Waver feel inferior physically, but later realises the trouble is he can't feel as if he's truly made an accomplishment in winning the Grail if he only coasts along due to Rider's strength.

Though it doesn't tend to come out in the best form, all of this shows Waver's strong sense of justice. Of course what he most wants is for he himself to be respected, but he isn't selfish. If he was only worried for himself, he would focus only on proving himself, but in writing a thesis on how anyone in his position could prove highly talented, he unwittingly shows his concern for others. Not only that, but, he is the only master who doesn't attempt to use any underhanded means of picking off another master or servant. When he and Rider come across Caster and Ryuunosuke's hiding spot, Waver is so horrified by the atrocities he sees within, a mountain of murdered children, that he vomits, cries and repeatedly questions what sort of person could possibly do such a thing. He's in the middle of a war and already realises the reality of corruption and inhumane acts, but even so, it's entirely beyond his scope. In addition, he expresses an interest and concern for Rider in researching him at the library and feeling sympathy for the way his life ended, without reaching his ultimate goal. Though Waver would likely say none of these things are out of concern for others, it only happens to correlate with his own interests. But that wouldn't be the truth, he doesn't like to admit his concern and only wants to give off an air of selfimportance.

He comes to change an incredible amount throughout the eleven days of the Grail War. Or rather, in many ways, came to understand and accept parts of himself he denied. His bravery, desire for friendship, his own true strength without the justification of others, everything already lied somewhere within him. His bond with and instruction from Rider, along with the realities he faced all forced him to grow up in a very short period, and brought out his best qualities. Of course, quite a bit was taught to him in this time as well, something of a sense of adventure, a humbling, teamwork and loyalty were gained through Rider's influence. In the end, he pledges his loyalty to his servant, declaring Rider his king, and states he will carry on his legacy and join the army of Alexander the Great. It's of some debate within the fandom, but, in Rider's Noble Phantasm which calls the Heroic Spirits of his army, one is shown who looks just as Waver does in adulthood and wears the clothing of a mage. By the end of the series, Waver is a very conscientious young man open to new experiences and suddenly quite satisfied with his life, his only regret being telling Rider he would go into the final battle with him as his subject, rather than as his friend. He finally decides to take a break from studying and to try new things, even going so far as to play the video game Rider bought, despite initially calling it ridiculous and a waste of time.

Nevertheless, his frustration will always continue, even when he becomes quite successful and well-regarded later in life, he still can't measure up to his own standards, quite possibly due to the humiliation he felt during his schooling. And that brings us to the Lord El-Melloi II phase of his life. After the Grail War, Waver helped the Archibald family to rebuild after the death of their successor. Partially as he was accused of being responsible for it, but it didn't take much convincing, he willingly helped out of a sense of guilt and goodwill. The successor granted him Kayneth's old title, Lord El-Melloi. Though to Waver, the only way he can accept the title is by adding 'the second' on to the end, without that distinction, the thought of it would make him sick, as he's never been able to forgive or forget the torment he suffered from the original El-Melloi. Upon becoming a lord, his place in the world of magi shot up immediately. No longer was he looked down upon or treated as a second-class citizen, others respected him even if simply for his title. Even while much of it is justified as he becomes a respected lecturer at Clock Tower, this doesn't particularly sit well with Waver. He feels he should and could be better, and in now recognising the opinions of others don't matter, gets little to no satisfaction out of this high esteem. If anything, it frustrates him all the more. If he's to be respected, he should feel there was good reason for it, something he can be proud of as his own great accomplishment, not just false respect for someone in power.

Mages often use and manipulate others for their own gain, and as much as Waver detests that, he's learned how to do it as well. He knows it's terrible, but in the world of magi he has no choice but to follow suit if he wants to accomplish anything. Especially his ultimate goals. For the benefit of others like him, he wants to reform their society, overturn the old ways of thinking that say one should be judged by their lineage and cannot rise above it. He will also gladly use his title and influence to achieve this, even if it's not the way he would have liked to go about it, so long as the end result is the same. He has only a few friends, tending to act aloof and sarcastic around others, but those he has, he holds dear. He's just much too careful and calculating to allow many in, knowing some would take advantage.

Strengths/Weaknesses: Waver has improved his magecraft over ten years, but, even so, he really isn't very powerful. Although he is quite skilled in alchemy. His greatest strength is actually in training other magi and developing their skills. He's a smoker and gamer, so it's no stretch to think he's pretty out of shape as well. Wavers strengths lie in his intelligence, more than anything. He's always been very good at making up for his lack of skill, even if it might take longer. He does, however, have a short temper and little patience for mistakes from others.

Canon Resource Links: Young Justice Wiki: Wonder Girl,

Personality: You really only need one word to describe Cassie, and from it you can trace the motivation that drives her other traits as well. That word is "eager". Eager to make friends, eager to do right, eager to make her mother, mentor, and seniors proud, eager to do well, eager to help her team, eager to prove herself, eager, eager, eager! Wonder Girl just doesn't really DO things halfway unless she really has to. Some of this can likely be blamed on her age, but mostly she just has a pretty typical "E"/extroverted personality type.

For starters Cassie is DEFINITELY the type that defaults to thinking with her mouth, not with her head, as the saying goes. She talks out loud to herself when she's trying to puzzle her way through a tough situation or personal dilemma. Second of all: She'd definitely be the one to rush into a problem without really thinking it fully through, or would possibly overlook an important but seemingly small or insignificant at the time detail. Only through intense training with Wonder Woman has Cassie gained enough self control and restraint over some of her louder and dominant traits to shape up into becoming Wonder Girl. There are still times even now when someone has to remind her "A little less fan-girl and a little more Wonder Girl." or you might hear the current team leader commenting that while her enthusiasm is appreciated it's-- or she's --not necessarily the right fit for the current job. Her strong desire to help probably stems from wanting to have the approval and attention of those around her, to belong and (again) to prove that she's got the chops to be a great hero as well. So in other words she and Korra would totally be BFF's.

Her heart is worn right on her sleeve, too. If she's genuinely disappointed it shows, whether she wants it to or not (she tends to get a little sulky rather than pouting). When she gets angry she uses it to fuel her fighting. Her admiration is plainly written on her face and in her words (Or, rather... her ATTEMPT at conversation. WHAT ARE COMPLETE SENTENCES, AGAIN? "THAT WAS AMAZING! You were like, like, PEW PEW! And then it was like SMASH!" -- Yep that's Cassie for you. No joke.). When she's happy she's HAPPY, and when she's nervous she's nervous, and babbles, but not the endless kind of babbling that you get from Kid Flash, more like the my mouth is moving and my brain is telling it to shut up but my mouth isn't listening and you really don't need to hear all of this, do you. It's either that, or a lot of those aforementioned incomplete sentences. Thankfully she can snap right back with a reminder to focus (either talking out loud to herself or from an ally nearby), and even seems capable of multitasking between fighting and making battle-banter. It's just that she fights better when she's focused on the fighting (imagine that).

So you see she isn't like most tough types who hide their emotions under a hard exterior twenty-four seven, but she's got a pretty good balance going since she's also not the sort to break down and give up in terror. She's always up for a challenge, ALWAYS, and she actually really enjoys the physical side of her "job". She's way too determined and busy being awesome for any of that crap. Plan goes south and the mission's security is in jeopardy? TAKE CHARGE AND GET IN THERE TO WARN THE OTHERS. Captured by enemy scouts on her way to the rendezvous point? KICK THEIR ASSES AND REGROUP WITH THE TEAM LEADER. Keep a level head until then: There will be time for freakouts once she is away from the enemy and no longer a threat to the mission's success.

No, really, THIS HAPPENED. IT'S CANON. She was able to keep it together long enough to escape enemy capture, meet at the designated area, and THEN proceeded to freak out and chastise herself for ruining things by being careless. Clearly, though overall confident in Wonder Woman's training Cassie is also still aware of her glaring flaws as a hero (and a person) and is actively working on trying to overcome them at all times. She scolds herself like a person who should know better, further lending to a little bit of a good girl image. She always means well, but her emotions can get the best of her at times. She sometimes wishes she were more stealthy like the Batkids, and grumbled a bit to herself jealously about the flair and ease that Batgirl exhibits when infiltrating an enemy base.

Underneath the zealous behavior and upbeat, confident attitude Cassie DOES seem to harbor some doubts and uncertainties regarding her place on/usefulness to the team; something that is evidenced by her surprise when Nightwing congratulates her squad and she herself on a job well done, followed by the three older girls pulling her into a congratulatory huddle/hug thing and getting some amusement out of her dumbstruck expression.

I'm not clear on the specifics of her home life yet, like who her mother is or what she does for a living, or if either she or Cassie have any contact with her father (Zeus, yes, THAT Zeus). For that reason I will update her history section as we see more episodes (IN THREE WEEKS. /sob), but she's a sweet girl who just wants to do the right thing, protect her friends, and have a good time while they do it if possible (see: laughing out loud as they escape their enemies clutches and certain doom; grinning excitedly in the heat of a battle that her side is winning-- or at least things are going according to plan, etc.). She IS still a sixteen year old girl, after all. And girls just wanna have fu~un.

Based on that I think it's safe to assume that she has a good, possibly close relationship with her mother who is PROBABLY well aware that Cassie is doing the hero thing when she's not busy with school or what not (supported some by the fact that Wonder Woman has made reference to her mother being displeased about Cassie leaving the planet to accompany her to an intergalactic trial). She also seems to be very close to Wonder Woman, and I think she regards her almost like an aunt or godmother. She seems to be a little bit protective over her like a younger child who doesn't want to lose their guardian, but at the same time you have to expect she knows that the woman in red, white, and blue can take damn good care of herself (she taught Cassie how to do the very same, after all).

If you're ever in need of a "sometimes easily excitable but always dependable" sort for your team, Cassie's your girl.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

✔/✘ Energetic and Eager
Less of a weakness, more of a strength-- MOST of the time. Cassie is undeniably an "E" personality type. Outgoing, outspoken, brave, and incredibly determined. This is usually a plus for superheroes but she has been shown to get a little TOO excited in the heat of the moment (once when fangirling over Wonder Woman, then again when being careless during her escape on a mission). Usually she's easy to get back on track with a quick verbal reminder.

✔/✘ Wears her heart on her-- er... sleeve...
Despite not actually wearing sleeves (hurr hurr) Cassie is a very open individual. While it's implied that she might be capable of keeping secrets we never actually see her doing so, so instead I'm led to believe that she's probably a bad actress. She's probably mostly incapable of convincing deception unless it's all in harmless fun (planning a surprise party or pulling a joke on a friend). She's pretty trusting as well, for that matter. In one episode she's so stupefied by the betrayal of one of her team mates that she's too surprised to even react, allowing herself to be pinned without ever actually lifting a hand to fight back.

✔/✘ Eager to Impress and Please
While we don't see a lot of this in action in the show Cassie IS clearly eager to please and impress her seniors (Wonder Woman, Nightwing, Miss Martian, and probably several others as well). She means well and she tries hard, but this could easily become overbearing if she's not careful. She'll volunteer first or expect to be chosen for dangerous aspects of missions but sometimes fails to take her skill set versus others into account when there may be someone better suited for the job. She's also been shown to POUT when finding out that she wasn't kidnapped and therefore didn't get to (potentially) kick bad guy butt.

✔ Courageous and Determined
This is a strength all its own aside from being a possible weakness. For the most part Cassie has a level head in battle. No matter HOW tough the opponent is Cassie is always ready and willing to throw down. Even in the middle of getting her butt kicked she's more than willing to dive back in for more to help and/or protect her teammates in whatever way she can. She's not afraid to fight opponents who are armed, bigger, or stronger than her.

✔ Demi-goddess, trained by Wonder Woman
Even though her powers will be nerfed here Wonder Girl still has her training. She'd be one of the stronger "captives" in Johto because of the physical training that she's endured with Diana. Her super reflexes would also be lessened to normal levels but she would still have better reflexes than most, I think at least? She was trained in the Amazon fighting style and has knowledge of how to use a lasso.

✔ Friendly and Optimistic
She has a very upbeat personality and prefers to make friends, though friendly rivals are also welcome, and I'm sure she wouldn't mind a few people to go toe to toe with. With an open personality she's pretty easy to get along with, and is generally accepting of others.

✘ No real basic domestic skills
Long story short, Cassie can't cook or wash clothes. She doesn't know how to start a fire, and she isn't familiar with foraging. She'll be pretty reliant on modern conveniences and the kindness of others as she adjusts to life in the Pokemon world.

✘ Sort of ridiculous with her priorities at times
As explained above Cassie is not above pouting when she doesn't get included in the action. Where most people would probably be concerned about their mentor being kidnapped Cassie is both too confident in Diana and too put out to really express any concern right away. Instead her first reaction is to stick out her lip and fold her arms like a petulant child. She denies it when asked, but still... yeesh.

✘ Sometimes overconfident
It doesn't matter if its a stealth mission or if the enemy is twice her size, Cassie will dive in head first unless told otherwise. While she WILL actually wait for orders, if there isn't a plan in place her first instinct is to go for it, trial and error style. She's confident in her abilities, her faith and trust in others, and the abilities of those around her. This is good, but it can also mean she'll put herself in situations where she's in over her head, and that can be dangerous to herself as well as those around her.

Starter: Riolu (Donna) - They're practically made for each other, honestly. They're both physical fighting types (with other special abilities), and Riolu's behavior is a perfect fit for Cassie's personality type. She would love a Pokemon partner that was physically able to keep up with her. Riolu's described as energetic, playful, and loyal, all traits that describe Cassie to the letter, and while she could bond with any starter given to her I think she would have the strongest connection with a Riolu.

First Person Sample:

[It hasn't been the most entertaining post on the network, that much is for sure. It started with a loud thump and a blur of colors, then for three minutes it was nothing but darkness, muffled voices, muffled footsteps, and background music. Finally after a while there's a shuffling noise, and the sound of fabric dragging against the microphone. The gear shows an inquisitive Riolu's face, who promptly looks away from the camera and to someone off screen.]

Rio!

You found it? [Comes the voice from somewhere in the direction the Pokemon is staring.] Nice going, Donna!

[When the gear changes hands a blond comes into view wearing an upbeat grin. She flops right there on the floor with her legs crossed and "Donna" getting comfortable on her knee.]

Hey guys, sorry if you've been trying to call me. I must've dropped my pokegear last night before bed.

[There's a slight grumbling noise from someone off screen, not nearly clear enough to make out if it's human or Pokemon, but it sound suspiciously like disapproval.]

Yeah, yeah, I know! I'll clean it up later! Geez... [She lets out a breath, blowing a few strands of her bangs out of her eyes with playful exasperation.] Anyway, so I heard there's a fight studio around here somewhere. We just got into town last night and I'm dying to check the place out. Training Donna is great and all, but I seriously can't wait to get back into training myself, either. [The look on her face is kind of smirky, like someone that definitely enjoys a good rumble. You wouldn't be far off with that guess.] So can anyone give me some more details on what we're looking for? Like, an address? I'd definitely appreciate it! Later!

Third Person Sample:

The face that Cassie made at her bento box as she sat on the side of the road (taking a break) was not the face of one who was either convinced nor impressed.

"Seriously...? They expect this to be enough to last for three days?"

Well, she supposed it could be rationed a bit. If she was careful then it might last her long enough to make it to this... Cherrygrove City or whatever it was called. She had played the games back home, of course, but she was a generation four kid. Her familiarity with Johto and Kanto went about as far as knowing the names of the starter Pokemon.

Truthfully she wasn't exactly convinced that this wasn't some sort of trick, though she was having a hard time coming up with an explanation for how Psimon could have captured her, let alone why he'd bother trapping her in an illusion of a Pokemon world. Surely if he had she and the others captive he could come up with something more nefarious than a children's video game.

Then again, this constant music is practically torture by itself...

Cassie thought to herself, chewing over one of the picked vegetables. That was another thing, why did they give her CHOPSTICKS? If this were a dream-hallucination-mind trap-thing then shouldn't she at least have silver wear? Seriously, could she really believe Psimon would pay that much attention to detail to keep things that authentic?

"Okay..." She muttered, putting the bento down to pick up the little round sphere with the star marking on it, rolling the tiny ball back and forth between her thumb and middle finger as she stared. "What would the boss say...? 'If you rule out the impossible then all that's left is the improbable.'?"

No answer, of course, making Cassie bow her head and shut her eyes with a sigh.

"Whatever, it's not like I've got anything to lose, right?"

She gave the button in the middle a press, surprised when it actually expanded-- had a brief laugh at herself for BEING surprised because isn't that how it's supposed to work in the games and the show, and felt a sort of nervous energy rush through her. Anticipation.

"I guess this IS pretty cool for a dream..." Her lips shifted into a grin and she gave the button another press and the ball a toss. "Okay, let's find out what I got!"

Jaime Reyes | Young Justice | Reserved oh darn it.

[personal profile] stfuscarab 2013-05-05 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Character
Name: Jaime Reyes
Series: Young Justice
Timeline: Post Satisfaction, episode 8, after the grotto scene.
Canon Resource Links: Info on him and the team

Personality:
On one hand, when looking at Jaime, he appears to be a normal teenaged boy. On another hand, depending on when anyone happens to catch him, he appears to be a normal teenaged boy who sometimes talks to himself because there’s actually talking alien technology grafted into his spine, making him maybe not-so-normal.

The latter is actually more so the case. Not bringing the alien technology in, Jaime’s just like any other teenager. He’s easily excitable, rather quirky, sometimes sarcastic, somewhat quick-tempered, and is generally pretty easy to get along with. Also, like most teenagers, he’s also prone to making mistakes. However, there’s more to him than just being a teenager. One night, when he was on his way home, he witnessed an explosion that would change his life forever. When he witnessed this explosion and freaked out because his shirt was on fire, he came across a
giant blue beetle
which could have easily been a Pokemon because there is no way a beetle could be that big…but since there aren’t Pokemon in his canon, it just appeared to be a giant, mysterious beetle. Little did Jaime know was that it was actually alien technology and upon picking it up, the scarab instantly grafted itself into his spine, transforming him into Blue Beetle. Since then, Jaime hasn’t exactly been the same.

After that incident, Jaime's been playing superhero, which shows his good nature and willingness to do the right thing and help others. It also shows how easily excitable he is, as he could do various things such as fly as much as he pleases, which could double as fun. He could do things no one could ever dream of now. When he is approached by fellow superheroes Wonder Girl and Nightwing, he was extremely skeptical about joining their team at first, but was somehow dragged into the fold anyway. Of course, this all worked out as Jaime ended up having a blast, happily joining them.

As far as his relationship with the scarab goes, it appears he’s always at odds with his new “partner”. Jaime likes to do things in a more sensible way. If there is a peaceful way to make a situation less intense, that is the road he likes to go down. Because of the softer way he likes to approach things most of the time, he always finds himself arguing with the scarab, as it usually advises him to go about situations in a more destructive manner, most of the time when that isn’t necessary. He always wants to do the right thing, despite what the scarab says. It is enough to literally cause Jaime to have outbursts, which make him look crazy as no one knows the scarab can talk, so it looks like he’s arguing with himself. It should also be noted that he’s quick tempered, which could also be blamed on the scarab sometimes.

Jaime is also extremely loyal to his friends and teammates. If something is wrong, he wants to help when he’s needed. When one of his friends was having issues at home and threatened to run away, Jaime went looking for him to calm him down, despite the scarab thinking it was pointless. Unfortunately, by the time Jaime was at the meeting place, his friend was missing. He spent several hours trying to find him, even accusing his friend’s stepdad of causing physical harm to him and getting rid of him. However, it turned out his stepdad had nothing to do with it and his friend was indeed missing, much to Jaime’s sadness.

He also tends to freak out at times and has been described as odd, as evidenced by a mission he went on during New Year’s Day when he was still familiarizing himself with the scarab’s abilities.

At times, Jaime is also unsure of himself. Though he enjoys being a hero, he’s still relatively new, having only been in the business for a few months and doesn’t know much about the scarab attached to his back. He feels cheated, as he’s one of the few people on his team who has never had or met his mentor to guide since his predecessor has died. He wonders if he’s doing a good job living up to what his predecessor has done before he died.

Despite his issues with the scarab, Jaime’s a really good kid at the end of the day, always wanting to do the right thing, helping others if or when they need it, and most importantly, living up to the previous Blue Beetle who could have been his mentor.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

+ Easy to get along with.
+ Works well with others.
+ More than willing to offer help if he feels it's needed.
+ Always wants to do what’s right.

- Easily distracted.

- Doesn’t always think things through or ahead of time.

- Sometimes too easily annoyed.

- Makes his share of mistakes.

- Not always sure of himself/doubts himself.
- Temper. Heh.

- People think he’s crazy because he “talks to himself”.

First Person Sample: Uh...okay, is this thing on?

[Unknown to Jaime, the device actually is on, but nothing can be seen. Only his voice can be heard, and it's pretty easy to tell he's rather confused, maybe even a little panicked. Moments later, the video finally clicks on, revealing a dark-haired young man with a confused look that matches his voice.]

Finally! Okay, it’s clear I’m not home anymore, so who wants to fill me on what’s going and why—

[He pauses for a moment. Asking a stranger why his scarab’s actually not working might not be the best plan, as maybe hidden enemies could be here and take advantage of this fact. Instead, he clears his throat and continues, trying to figure out what to say.]

…and why I’m here?

[When he looks off to the side for a moment, as something seemed to catch his attention, his face shifts from confused to extremely freaked out once he sees what it actually is.]

dios mio! What is that?!

[The video then shifts over to a giant blue beetle moving toward the camera. Either way, beetles should not be that big to Jaime, and he doesn’t have his gear to fight it off, so he’s panicking.]

Seriously! What is that thing? Of course I wouldn’t have bug spray on me when this happens!

Third Person Sample:

He tried everything. No matter what he did, his armor wasn’t working. On top of that, the scarab also was quiet. Normally, Jaime would be okay with this, as he now doesn’t have to worry about what he calls a “hostile Jiminy Cricket” giving him terrible advice. However, the scarab did help in the sense that he was able to scan his surroundings for threats. Because he had neither the armor nor the scarab to help him figure things out, it looked like he was on his own. Well, mostly. He did, however, have his new partner Heracross to guide him, though he was still mildly freaked out by it as he has never seen a beetle so big before. He still kind of cool in a way, though; it reminded him of the scarab, except it was much bigger and actually listened to him.

If only the scarab acted that way, being a hero would have been much more fun and easier.

He can’t dwell too much on the armor not working or being a hero anymore right now. His next step is to try familiarizing himself with his new surroundings and trying to figure out where to go from here. Once he had all his things packed, he looked to his Heracross, nodded, and they headed out to explore.

Despite all the weirdness that has happened in the last few days, this place was actually not so bad from what he could tell. All the animals….or Pokemon, rather, that he’s stumbled upon were really cool. Sure, he’s seen his share of aliens and weird stuff back home, but he gets the feeling that even if he had the chance to tell his teammates about this, they probably still wouldn’t believe him. While Jaime was busy admiring everything at the moment, he didn’t realize another pokemon appeared, looking for a fight. His Heracross lightly nudged him and Jaime just smirked in return.

“Looks like I’m about to have my first battle, huh?”

Character
Name: Haku
Series: Naruto
Timeline: Post-death, pre-time skip.
Canon Resource Links: Here.

Personality: Haku is kind of a strange case in the Naruto world; mainly that he actually does not want to kill people by any means unless he has to. He’d much rather incapacitate an opponent or leave them in a state they can recover from instead of outright killing them. This had led to him being described by Zabuza as “soft hearted” even though he’s never canonly seen trying to change the boy’s methods.

To that extent, Haku is really a sweetheart in personality. He’s polite, soft spoken, and generally just a nice guy that wants to get along with other people and not cause any trouble unless it absolutely must be done. Around new people he seems a bit shy, preferring to speak as little as possible and instead letting someone else speak for him if the need arises. This does not mean he is a pushover as he is nothing of the sort.

There’s very little that upsets the teenager, though one of the best ways to anger him is by threatening the person/people closest to him. This is a grave offense and something that he will not easily let go and would be willing to kill in order to rectify, this has led to his history of becoming Zabuza’s weapon due to wanting to have a purpose and because he cares for the man. However, this will eventual extend to other people as he gets closer to them and becomes friends or something more. Any attack on a friend or anyone close at all will warrant his wrath and it’s a one-eighty turn around.

Which comes to how he acts when upset or when he’s on a mission. Haku may be soft hearted but he is a very efficient and effective tool and killer when the need arises. He remains silent, making moves and words only as necessary after running the scenario through his head a couple of hundred times to make sure he’s accounted for any snags. His movements are always deliberate and precise; aiming to make sure he does not waste anything or any time. In a word he is serious when the need arises and is very job oriented no matter what the job happens to be. Whether it be killing someone, incapacitating someone, helping defend someone, or just simply nursing someone back to health it is all to a scarily efficient degree.

Strengths/Weaknesses: Haku has a kekkei genkai (blood-line ability) that allows him to mix both water and wind chakra (life force energy) together to create ice of which he uses in a few different techniques. They are generally focused towards more defensive properties (such as his Demonic Ice Mirrors that he uses to confuse opponents and get an upper-hand and later on is shown with an ice dome to deflect incoming attacks) but it can be used in offensive situations as well (such as making needles out of ice). Other than that Haku is a fast one, making even a jounin level shinobi barely able to keep up with him and this was WITHOUT any kind of chakra enhancement on his part.

Due to being a trained shinobi since he was a young child, Haku has extensive knowledge in anatomy and pressure points, leading to him to an affinity with senbon (acupuncture needles) that he can throw with such accuracy that he can strike spots to incapacitate or kill his opponents.

Pokémon Information
Affiliation: Breeder
Starter: Seel

Samples
First Person Sample: [Once again Haku has returned to this place, not exactly upset by it by any stretch of the imagination. It’s certainly better than being dead in the ground, after all, and certainly a lot better than he had thought it would be. He keeps the gear steady enough, letting it pan about the familiar buildings of one of the starter towns before focusing it on himself once more.]

This place certainly cannot be rid of me, it would seem. Not that I disagree with being amongst people once again, it is a rather nice feeling. It even let me keep one of the pokemon I had previously, which is at least something to be said of it. [He shifts the gear to the Seel currently rolling around in the grass.] I really do appreciate it, I certainly didn’t get to stay all that long before. Perhaps there will even be people here that I am familiar with.

Or… well, I suppose new people are quite okay as well. Has anyone else been here, left, and returned before like this?

Third Person Sample: Well, this was certainly a new situation for him. A light frown crossed the teen’s lips as he surveyed the little town he’d wound up in. It was far, far too familiar to him. Something about creatures and having to raise them or some such, it was all a bit fuzzy to be sure.

Immediately his hand slid into the backpack he was carrying, hand fishing around until it caught on the circular smooth surface with a button in the middle of it. That would explain quite a lot, actually, if only he could remember what everything had been before. Though, if he had his way, he’d certainly know what was inside this ball.

The frown slowly turned into a light smile as he pulled the ball from his bag, examining it to make sure everything looked correct before throwing it to release the creature inside. A doofy looking white seal with long tusks was what he was met with, the creature instantly awkwardly walking/sliding over towards him to cling to his leg and gently head nuzzle him.

Haku only needed to lean down to pet the creature’s head, voice as light as ever. "I see you still remember me and are well, Akemi. Let’s start again, shall we?" Once the words were spoken did the creature look back up at him, making a sound similar to the name of it while turning about towards the exit of the town.

Certainly Haku was back where he had once begun; it was all too familiar to him. But this time there would be changes, this time he would make sure to figure out the secrets of this place before it got the better of him. No, he had survived death in order to be returned here, given the same creature he had had before. It certainly couldn’t be coincidence that this fact happened, it really couldn’t be. There had to be some purpose and if anyone could figure it out, hopefully it was him.

Character
Name: Pitch Black
Series: Rise of the Guardians
Timeline: After being knocked out by Sandy in the final battle
Canon Resource Links: This here is the wiki!

Personality: Pitch is the Boogyman, he's the very soul of everything people have or will ever be afraid of. He's what goes bump in the night for the past few thousand years, the thing lurking in the shadows watching you. He finds delight in twisting dreams in to nightmares or stirring the occasional terror in society with a carefully placed word or two.

This isn't to say he's some mindless monster lurking in the shadows ready to pop out and scare girls and boys. He is vastly intelligent and almost infinitely patient, capable of forming plans that take centuries to come to fruition. While his pale, gaunt appearance lends itself to a somber outlook he has a definitive sense of rather twisted dark humor as well as a dry sarcastic wit. He doesn't see himself as something evil, fear after all can keep people alive better than wonder, hope or joy ever could in his opinion. It keeps children close to their parents and away from the monsters that would devour them or the dangers of world they're too young to deal with.

Whereas he was once something of a Guardian himself in the Dark Ages, the recent centuries and rise of the Man in the Moon's chosen have left him bitter and vengeful. He wants nothing more than to return as top dog of the magical influences on humanity and will stop at nothing to do so even if it means eradicating them from the face of the earth. Manipulative and conniving, Pitch is more than willing to exploit the fears of others to bend them to his will or convince them to join his side of the game. He isn't nice and has no desire to make himself be seen as that, he doesn't honey coat his opinions and honestly doesn't care if he upsets someone.

Beneath the ego and showmanship however Pitch has certainly felt the toll of the centuries of being ignored and waved off as just a figment or story. He sympathizes deeply with Jack over this, as he fears being utterly ignored and eventually fading away completely like so many of the other beings he shared the shadows with.

Strengths/Weaknesses: Pitch has the astounding ability to make pretty much anyone angry at him in less than ten minutes given the motivation to not stop himself from doing so. Beyond that he's a good tactician, as showcased by his near destruction of the Guardians in a few short days as well as almost infinitely patient when he's working towards a goal.

His age is something of a mixed bag, on one hand he's survived thousands of years and more than a few rises and falls in power. On the other he's decidedly out of touch with much of anything considered modern, and even more out of touch with humanity as a whole. Seeing only what they're afraid of and their failures doesn't exactly lend itself well to a positive outlook on them.

Pitch's fears are, perhaps, among the most basic and relatable parts about him. He fears being alone and ignored, and longs most for a place in the world where he won't be shoved out of.

(If possible I'd like to keep his fear-sensing ability, obviously working only on pokemon as per the psychic abilities ruling. I'm fine with it not being allowed though!)

First Person Sample: [The fact that Pitch isn't gray and eyebrowless might be really odd to some people, and he'd honestly avoid using this device all together if possible but there are some questions that even he needs to ask.]

Blasted thing...

[A misdreavus seems to laugh at him from behind, but encourage him to continue as it drifts out of screen.]

Right.

[He clears his throat. Public addresses have never been his strongsuit, so he's just going to cut straight to the punch.]

What's the point behind this traveling around with… creatures that can easily harm you? I fail to understand why such value is placed on fighting that people are willing to force children out of their homes and in to the wilderness for no reason other than to win tacky pins and climb mountains.

Not that it isn't likely good character building but I cannot see a reason for it beyond idiocy.

Why should I bother with it, in other words.

[Misdreavus tried, really but he really doesn't get it.]

Third Person Sample: Pitch mostly hated it here.

Everything about the place simply grated on him at a fundamental level when it wasn't being unsettling. While people being able to see and hear him was wonderful it was all so… lightly sugar coated and cute.

It didn't help that he felt blind and weak and vaguely trapped within his own skin. Human wasn't something he'd ever been beyond the basics of appearances and the change had been jarring and full of more than a few hurdles.

Like the one that found him sitting in a dark alley rubbing his forehead and grumbling at a brick wall. He kept forgetting that he couldn't simply walk in to a shadow and come out somewhere else at his discretion. Thousands of years of habit was hard to break, but a week of having a sizable bruise across his forehead and what had possibly been a broken nose had made him more aware of that particular loss than he'd cared to remember.

He still had his pride after all, and human or not he was the Nightmare King.

"Is there a mark, Phobos?" He asked quietly, fingering his nose for a possible break and looking at the floating misdreavus who looked only slightly amused. She shook her head, resisting the urge to sigh at him as he stood an brushed himself off.

"It's a good thing nobody saw that."

She wholeheartedly agreed, Pitch looked far too much like an ariados when he fell after walking straight in to a brick wall.

Pitch may have mostly hated this too sunny world he'd woken up in but some things weren't too bad. He… liked some of the pokemon. Of course they were likely the ones that most others didn't particularly appreciate, the ghosts and and the more intimidating ones for the most part.

Phobos was, perhaps a better companion than Onyx.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Characters/OutlawStar (Under "The Heroes" section.)

Personality: Gene is one of the many countless gads of outlaws that inhabit frontier space. It's a hard life, and not meant for those with a meek constitution. Yet somehow, through it all, Gene has managed to keep his love of adventure and thirst for new experiences.

Gene has a cavalier attitude toward his life, preferring to leave a lot of things to chance and simply skirt by tough situations with a mixture of skill, resourcefulness, and plain old luck. He's a man with a dream. One day he's going to be a big-shot in the universe, come hell or high water. He's not going to let a silly thing like pirates, authorities, trained killers, or basic logic get in the way of his goals. He's a risk-taker, and believes that somehow things are just going to work out in his favor if he can just bullshit long enough. He's Gene Starwind, how could it go any other way?

Gene is somewhat defined by his lifestyle. The show is called "Outlaw Star", after all. What exactly is an Outlaw? In the age that Gene lives in, there are basically three types of people. There are those who follow the commonly agreed upon galactic laws, and just want to go about their lives in the civilized worlds, doing whatever their business entails. The regular folk, those who live by the law. Of course, any new frontier has its highwaymen, and the Pirates are those in this future era. Space Pirates, organized into multiple clans, with multiple origins. They clash with galactic law enforcement frequently. They both have their own laws, loyalties, and levels of bureaucracy. Then there are people like Gene. Outlaws are self-interested parties who don't owe allegiance to either side. Loners who play by only their own rules and seek their fortune in any way they see fit. They come in all dispositions, but the common thread is their stubborn will to live outside of having their destinies controlled by others. Living by your own rules is part of the Outlaw life, and Gene is no exception. He even prefers to run his own business. "Starwind and Hawking" handles everything from bounties to body-guarding, and everything in between. Granted, they're always in the red, but they're happy with their lives and Gene gets to basically make his own hours. Still, he's not good with minutia, so Jim has to handle all the finances while Gene is doing the physical work. Gene shows a flagrant disrespect to anyone who tries to enforce rules or restraints on him. He's flippant to interstellar law enforcement, something that has landed him in lock-down before, and faces down the fearsome Kei Pirates with no fear. Any other party getting in his way tends to get the same treatment, including other Outlaws. When Gene got sequestered in one of the most brutal prisons in the galaxy just to find one man, he deliberately incurred the wardens wrath on several occasions, even knowing the beating he'd get for it.

Another aspect of outlaw life Gene fully embraces is the love of wine and women. He's a hard partying man who has difficulty turning down a good time when he sees it. This particular fault has gotten him into trouble more than once, but the arrogance of youth tends to blind everyone equally. Gene drinks fairly frequently, over-eats to excess, and shamelessly flirts with any beautiful woman that catches his eye. The women are definitely his most persistent problem, and it's a good thing he has someone level-headed like Jim to at least temper his behavior. He manages to hit on two-of-three female members of his team, even ending up in a relationship with one of them. On hot spring planet Tenrei, Gene was distracted several times on his mission by the sight of his female teammates bathing, which ended up with him getting cracked full-force in the face by Suzuka when she caught him peeking. Catching sight of Aisha's body after escaping a super-heated hot spring so flustered him, that he fell right back in. The coup-de-tat was at the end of the mission. Gene was so tunnel-visioned by the sight of a woman stripping on the video he took, he failed to recognize the extremely obvious timer on the lower corner, ending with an explosion that left him scorched and exhausted. Hell, even Gene's introduction has him using the money from a bounty to have a fun night in the Red Light District, where he ends up in the bed of a call girl. Jim has admonished him before that women would be the death of him, and he's almost been right several times. It remains to be seen if his relationship with Melfina will make a better man of him.

Underneath that roguish exterior, however, is a man who still suffers like everyone else. Gene lost his father when he was only 15, and going into space for the first time. Pirates murdered his dad right in front of him, and he jettisoned Gene to safety. This led to two major issues that plagued Gene for the next five years. His absolute, searing hatred of pirates, and his fear of going into deep space. Through the course of his adventures, Gene manages to overcome these issues. Wouldn't be much of a space story if the main character couldn't enter space, right? He still dislikes pirates, though, and just about anyone who likes to harm innocent people. Gene also starts with a bit of identity crisis while he was stuck on Sentinel III. The curse of being a free spirit is that you make your own path, for better or worse. Gene felt "stuck" in his life, like he couldn't move forward. He was just getting by on whatever he could. His risky job and carousing with women was just a way of filling that void, and it eventually just became normal to him.

Also, despite his somewhat careless actions, Gene has proven himself to be a fast-thinking, natural-born leader to the people around him. He might not have the raw intelligence of Jim, or the cool-headedness of Suzuka, but his ability to generate ideas in a tense situation and his skill at adapting to new challenges has made him a formidable opponent to those who cross.him. Not to mention the lengths he'll go to. If you're one of Gene's friends, he will literally cross Hell on barefoot just to help you, even if there's a good chance of his own demise. He doesn't leave a friend behind, and he never leaves a client hanging. He's frequently under-estimated by his opposition, only to end up getting one over on them in the end. He's a lot more resourceful than most people realize, and probably a bit more so than even HE realizes, even with as much as he boasts to the contrary.

As for Gene's softer side, that's probably best seen in his interactions with his teammates.

Gene and Jim are basically a surrogate sibling pair. Jim, despite being younger, is years ahead of Gene in responsibility and maturity. Yet at the same time, he has moments where he completely reverts to just being another kid. Gene is an irresponsible and brash man-child, yet seems to have incredible moments of clarity and conviction. They smooth out one another's faults and form one cohesive unit. Both would do anything in their power to protect eachother, so they do it in the only way they know how. Jim uses his brain, while Gene uses his body. Ever since the two met, they've been inseparable, even when Gene's behavior drives him absolutely crazy. These two are TIGHT.

Melfina is Gene's significant other and navigator, and the first "real" relationship that he's had in his life. Despite his history of rampant womanizing, Melfina is the person that really shines in his mind. She's caring, soft, and meek, all things that seem to run contrary to Gene's rough and tumble life-style. What started between them as a need to help her out, gradually became a romantic relationship between two people who just wanted to find their place in the universe. She helped "unstick" Gene's life, while Gene proved to her that she was more than just a tool to be used by other people. Her influence is one of the factors that forces Gene to "grow up", even if just a bit.

Ah, Aisha and Gene. These two are complete idiots when they interact. IDIOTS. Mainly because they're so damned alike, and unable to admit it. Aisha reflects every bad habit Gene has and then some. She's brash, argumentative, focuses so much on a goal that she sometimes misses the details, doesn't think about consequences, and is willing to battle at the drop of a hat. She's even more a fighter than he is, making her the real powerhouse of the ship. The two dig at each other in the way friends and siblings often do, little barbs that have no real hatred behind them, designed to annoy each other and amuse the people around them. The two originally had a very contentious relationship, that gradually deepened into mutual respect and comfort. She also serves as a big sister to Jim, offering him more comfort than Gene is usually capable of giving him.

Suzuka probably has the most surprising relation to Gene, considering the two met while she was trying to murder him. Gene managed to best her, a relentless, famous assassin, while protecting Fred Luo. This transferred her job to getting rid of Gene, before she could return for Fred. The two forged a strong bond over the course of the series, with Suzuka serving as a useful companion in her own right. Her style and agility worked as a fine complement to the brutish Aisha, and the quick-witted, ever-resourceful Gene. The two have the most professional relationship, enabled by the fact that she almost always keeps her cool. However, it's hinted toward the end that she may have fallen in love with Gene, and chooses to follow him out of affection. Especially true, since her employer ended up unable to pay her contract fee, erasing her original reason for following him.

Strengths/Weaknesses: Gene's a bit of an odd bird in that both his strengths and weaknesses revolve around the same trait. His immense ego. Gene's overconfidence causes him to be irresponsible in his life, step into fights he shouldn't, hit on women who are dangerous to his continued existence, and take on missions that are borderline suicidal.

When viewing it through a more positive lens, that same egotism makes him true to his word, since he believes in the strength of his reputation, makes him fearless in a battle, and gives him the focus to relentlessly chase a goal until it's complete, no matter how dangerous or unlikely the outcome.

Besides, it's not like his confidence is unwarranted. Gene is only 20, but he's good at bounty-hunting, able to take on multiple opponents if pushed to it, popular with the local girls, and always keeps to his promises once he's committed himself. Even in the course of just the series, Gene manages to mature a bit one he realizes he has bigger responsibilities than before. He has to grow out of his immature grandstanding naturally.

Gene has a slightly above average level of endurance, is in peak physical condition for a man his age, and has been shown to be a resourceful combatant with a working knowledge of various kinds of weapons. He's very good when it comes to coming up with plans on the fly.

Samples
First Person Sample: ...Okay, let's straighten this whole, messy business out, shall we? I'm a pretty cool guy. I can be reasonable.

[Gene lets out a deep breath, smoothing back his shaggy red hair, only for it to fall back into a mess again.]

I'm Gene. Gene Starwind. Now I don't know if any of you guys are from the Hei Phong system, but I'm kind of a big deal out there. New rising star on the galactic scene, got it? Here's the problem. Much as I love the adorable assortment of little critters you've got running around the place, and the lovely care package I've been given, I'm afraid I have to decline.

[He points downward.]

See, while I'm here...

[Then points up.]

I'm not out THERE. Doing the whole "rising star" thing. Hard to get more famous when I'm not doin' actual jobs, right? Not to mention that space-faring vessels have a hell of a lotta' upkeep and that requires money. Money from JOBS. Which I'm not DOING. See why I can't be here? That's not even factoring in how obviously lost my crew would be without me.

So I'll tell you what, why don't one of you guys contact the head honcho and see about sending me home? Come on, do me a solid. I promise I'll pay you back when I hit it big.

Third Person Sample:

"Gah!" Gene yelped, falling out of the bed with loud THUMP, as his skull collided with an end table. He jumped to his feet, cursing and rubbing his forehead with his palm. Perfect. Just the way he wanted to wake up after a night of heavy drinking. Jim was going to chastise him again, he knew it.

"Yo, Mel," he said, turning back to the bed, "It's time to get u--Mel? Mel? Hey, Mel! Where are you? You get up already, or what?"

That was when he noticed something was VERY off. Even with hangover vision, it was clear that this wasn't his room, and his bed was big enough for just one. From the view out the window, he was back on solid ground at the least. He pushed it open, immediately getting hit in the face with smell of a flowery meadow on the wind. The sun was shining, the weather fair, and the sound of happy citizens could be heard bustling about the town. Yeah, this was WAY too nice.

"Alright, no need to panic, Gene. Just get it together," he said, shutting the window and pushing his back to a wall, "No bars, no restraints, I'm not imprisoned. Just gotta' hold on until I can contact the ship. No big deal. I've got this."

It was as he went to the door that he noticed the satchel.

"The hell is with this crap?" he said, looking over the contents. The spheres were the strangest item by far. He turned one in his hands, before finally tossing it over his shoulder. "Ah, whatever."

Upon hitting the ground, the sphere grew and opened, surprising Gene with a sound and light show. After it was done a small, orange reptile stood on the ground. Its tail seemed to burn, but the creature showed no discomfort. Didn't seem to attack, either. What the hell WAS it?

"So, uh...you friendly or what?" he asked, prodding it with his foot a few times. Another item fell from the satchel when he moved, which he picked up and examined. As he turned back to the little beast, it spoke.

"Charmander. Fire pokemon. The flame on its tail shows the strength of its life force. If it is weak, the flame also burns weakly."

Another surprise. Not that talking machines were much of a shocker to him. Still, why did he even have all of this?

"Okay...Nice to meet you too, I guess," he said, turning back to the pokemon, "Charmander? Silly name, don't you think? You got an owner, or what? Is this stuff all his?"

After a moment of deciding what to do, he slung on the satchel.

"Weeeeell, tough shit. I need all the resources I can get, until I can find my way out of here. This stuff is comin' with me," he said, looking back at the creature before heading off, "...I guess you can come if you want. Let's see about finding some fresh food. Or maybe I can cook something on that tail of yours."

Character
Name: Airi Ban
Series: Devil Survivor 2 (Alternately: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2)
Timeline: Day 5 - Thursday's Shock.
Canon Resource Links: Here

Personality: Airi is a young girl who is very passionate, energetic and active but also wrathful and feisty, as she can and does lash out at others for teasing her or for their idiocy. Yet despite all that, she has a rare, cheerful side that she will show to people she relatively trusts.

Airi is a little could but not afraid to speak her mind. However, she has a problem in letting go of the past and looking into the future, as her Fate events show. She has wished to be a pianist but her parents couldn't afford the schooling and she was forced to quite. The situation left her feeling bitter.

Despite her bitterness, Airi still wishes everyone should be truly equal and help each other. This shows Airi is a bit of a humanitarian on the inside, despite how she appears on the surface.

All in all, she's someone who is cold, can anger easily and isn't afraid to speak her mind but she can have a sweet, cheerful side and does care about her friends and humanity.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths:
- Airi use to be able to play the piano and aspired to be a pianist. She won some awards for this when she was younger.
- She's very passionate, feisty and tough. She's doesn't back down easily and won't let anyone walk all over her.

Weaknesses:
- When she has the support of Protagonist and Makoto to let go of the past, she begun to look for other things she was good at, like nursing and cooking but she found work that involves other's life a little nerve-wreaking and doesn't turn out to be a great cook.
- She gets self-conscious to a point of jealousy. She had insulted the other women of Devil Survivor 2 for their flaws or good qualities--Io for having no edge, Otome for being too nice and Makoto for being perfect. In contrast, girls should be feisty, tough and have a flaw or two like her [Airi].

Whoops.

... Well, at least it works.]

Umm, hi there. My name is Airi Ban and last I checked, I was about to kick Kama's butt for being fussy after all my hard work in acting 'sexy' to awaken him, when I wounded up here! Uugh, I'm so mad about that...

Anyways, I'm stuck here with a sheep. [She stares the Mareep beside her.] Which isn't so bad. It's better than what I had to deal with, which was demons and stupid gods!

Though I wished I was pulled out of my world after I shown Kama a lesson or two! I guess I'll try to get use to things here around here. I don't really have a choice, heh.

Third Person Sample: "Welcome to the world of Pokemon!" Airi had kept hearing over and over. Here she was, about to kick a god's butt for being fussy about her attempts to awaken him and now she's in this strange world with this sheep-like creature called a Pokemon! She feels so irritated and wishes she could let it out. And that music... that freakin' music.

"Aaaaaaaaaahhhh!" She screams, scaring her sheep-like Pokemon a little bit. "I am sooooo mad! Whose bright mind thought it was a good idea to send me here?!" She'll stomp angrily before falling to her knees and sighing. She might as well get use to this world as she has a feeling she isn't getting out anytime soon.

She looks behind her, toward her new companion. "Hey. Sorry for that." She says softly, hoping to calm it down. It seems to work, as the sheep-like creature approaches her. She smiles and pets its head and feels its wool. Unsurprisingly, it feels rather soft. "I'm Airi Ban. Guess we're partners, huh?"
"Mareep!" It says, sounding like a confirmation. Airi wonders if her previous experience as a demon tamer will become helpful with this creature called Mareep.

But she has a feeling that doesn't apply to Mareep. She begins to ponder, "Okay," she looks down at her Mareep, "How about I give you a super cute nickname as a gift?" You can almost hear the giggle behind her smile.

"Ma! Mareep!"
The giggle gets worst, "Okay, okay. How about... um, Mari?" A resounding, excited "Reep!" comes out of Mari and Airi can't stop herself from grinning, "Okay! Let's be friends alright, Mari?"

The sheep-like Pokemon nods in enthusiasm, finding itself not minding Airi after all. "Awesome!" Airi says, hugging her new friend. It was better than anything right now, right? "Okay, let's go!" She says in a sing-songy voice as she stands up and begins to wander down the road with Mari behind her. She doesn't even mind that annoying music right now.

Character
Name: M'gann M'orzz
Series: Young Justice (animated series)
Timeline: post episode 17, "Disordered"
Canon Resource Links: http://youngjustice.wikia.com/wiki/Miss_Martian

Personality:
M'gann M'orzz is an alien who desperately wants to be accepted among humans. Equal parts perky, excitable, and personable, mixed with a surprising amount of uncertainty and deep rooted issues when it comes to self confidence and assurance, M’gann struggles to reconcile who she is and who she wants to be.

Her outward personality is a nice and friendly one, in that sweet, cheerful, girl-next-door sort of way. She smiles easily and has an eternally chirpy voice, complete with a “Hello, Megan!” catch phrase that she uses frequently. In a bit of a paradox, she is also shy and unsure of herself, which acts as a clue that her surface personality isn’t all there is to her. A lot of her more ditzy traits have been adopted to help make a new identity for herself, and give her distance from some uncomfortable secrets and history.

M'gann carries a lot of fear and shame when it comes to her origins as a white Martian. She wants to be seen and accepted as something normal, and is afraid of how people might react if they see she's something other then human. So M'gann covers her fears and short comings up with a sweet girl front and a lot of TV-learned mannerisms. (In fact, nearly all of her Earth knowledge has been gained from watching TV. Which has unfortunately given her a slightly incomplete and very unbalanced view on what life on Earth and among humans is like.) M’gann desperately wants to fit in, have friends, and be accepted by them. Rejection is a crushing fear for M’gann, to the point that her biggest terror is losing the team and family she’s worked so hard to become a part of.

She has a lot of self loathing, doubt, and image issues due to racism on Mars, which she tries to keep buried behind that cheerful girl front. Added to that, a recent mistake of hers in a training simulation that threatened her team hasn't done much for her self confidence. And while she's working on cultivating a better view of herself as a good and valuable person in her own right, M'gann is still a long way off from fully believing it.

Given that, it might actually be a good thing she can still indulge in being an Earth fangirl along the way.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Observant and quick-witted. While she isn't as sharp or has the same mad detective skills as some of her teammates, M'gann still has a pretty agile mind, capable of making plans and picking out things on her own.
+ Team player. M'gann loves being on a team and working with her friends and teammates, to the point she seeks it out over working alone.
+ Friendly/sweet disposition. She is almost eternally cheerful and an optimist, and open towards other people.
+ Cooking. She's learned how to copy many Earth recipes, and is very proud of the fact, exercising her skills often!
+ A mediator and peacemaker. She tries to deflect problems or steer conversation away from confrontation when she can, or does her best to mediate and sooth if that isn’t possible. Above all she tries to keep things calm between her friends.
+ Hand to hand combat is decent, as are her dodging and acrobatics, though this is scaled back. Overall she's fairly athletic.
+ Telepathy. It's the one bit of her power set she gets to keep, and she is going to have many, many silent conversations with her pokémon.
+/- Eager to please, to both a helpful and damaging degree. M'gann will fall over herself to make people happy with her and/or feel better. She wants everyone to feel like part of a group...Which sadly means that she can and will get involved when she shouldn't and doesn't understand the concept of "alone time," or when it's time to back off and stop exerting so much effort.
+/- Priority is always helping people first. Compassion before strategy, in other words; even if listening to orders would be better, she'll always put saving or helping someone ahead of that.
- Self conscious. She's well aware of her short comings and oddities compared to others, which gives M'gann a hesitant streak, and a notable lack when it comes to asserting herself.
- Uncertain. She wavers sometimes in her convictions, and often in her self confidence. M'gann rarely takes charge, preferring to leave the leading and final decisions to someone else, largely because of her doubts in herself.
- "This isn't exactly like TV" could well be another catchphrase for M'gann. She tries to emulate from what she saw from Earth's broadcasts, and having reality and television not mesh up can easily throw her for a loop.
- Mutable identity. She often tries a little too hard to mimic or fit in, and sometimes M'gann's own identity that she's crafted feels almost superficial.
- Afraid of rejection or being seen as abnormal, which is easily the most crippling fear for M'gann, and something she does everything she can to avoid.
- Heat avoidance. While M'gann doesn't have an actual weakness towards fire and high temperatures any longer, she still has a strong innate reflex to keep her distance from the stuff.
- Alien mind. M'gann tries to be a normal Earth girl, she really does. But Earth includes things like a set shape, no telekinesis, and very little mind to mind contact, all of which is a shock for M'gann.

M'gann M'orzz 2/2

[personal profile] psychic_effective 2013-05-12 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Samples
First Person Sample:
[It's a confused jumble of images when the video feed first turns on. The camera gets jostled every which way, like the person holding it isn't used to managing a phone with just her hands. A set of pale fingers cover the screen for a moment as well, before she picks out what she's doing and pries them away.]

"Is this...Okay, hello, Megan! Now I think this is how it works-"

[A second after saying that, a face finally comes into view. A now Caucasian and very normal Earth-girl M'gann looks at her new almost-like-Earth phone, trying to keep her face fixed in something curious and friendly...But there's plenty of other emotions flickering up in the corners of her eyes and mouth. Mainly confusion, uncertainty...And maybe even a little panic, from how tightly she's still clutching the device.]

"Good, I finally got this working! Um...Hello, whoever is getting this? My name is Megan." [Might as well go with an Earth name for now.] "And I'm afraid I'm a little disoriented. But first I wanted to ask if someone happened to lose a...Well, a kind of intimidating looking horse? That's..."

[She really can't believe what she's about to say next, but a look over her shoulder reminds M'gann that her eyes aren't playing tricks on her.]

"...On fire? There's one that's wandering around, and keeps following me. If you need help finding it, I'd be glad to give a hand since it isn't wandering away from me."

[And sure enough, peeking out from behind M'gann there's a horse with a nice, bright mane of fire with its eyes fixed on her. And which M'gann keeps trying to shy away from, not noticing that there's an oddly worried look in those big eyes.]

"So, um...A little help that I could give or receive would be much appreciated?"

Third Person Sample:
All things considered (and especially remembering bouts of amnesia in the desert, getting knocked out by super villains, being encased in fire, and training simulations gone wrong) this actually wasn't the worst thing to wake up to. M'gann told herself that, though it didn't do a lot to manage the confusion and panic jolting through her; she still had to deal with getting caught up in a whirlwind of well wishes, backpacks, and a boxed lunch shoved into her hands before getting shoo'd out the door. By the time she really got her mental feet under her, the door had shut behind her.

...And that led to the second jolt of panic, when M'gann tried to center her thoughts and stretch them out. Because after her first whisper of 'hello, team?' M'gann found herself facing resounding, deafening silence in her own head. She couldn't pick up any thoughts outside of her own; no overheard whispers of thoughts from anyone close by, or loud shouts from her teammates. It was like having a part of her hearing switched off, an eye covered up, and the sudden isolation pushed her pulse up to pounding-

Until she picked out the presence of something very, very faint from nearby. It was just a bare trace of psychic signature, poking at her head...And when M'gann focused on it, picked out that it was coming from a round object at her hip. Her own memories of overhearing round, spherical, and ultimately friendly things put her hands on auto-pilot, and M'gann couldn't get her hands working fast enough as she fumbled with the object. It was more on accident that her fingers tripped on the opening mechanism then anything else.

...And that was when M'gann got the third and final thing to panic over, once she caught sight of something very clearly on fire. And found herself trying to put as much distance between herself and the fire-pony-thing as possible.

Character
Name: Edward Elric
Series: Fullmetal Alchemist
Timeline: End of Chapter 85: The Empty Box
Canon Resource Links: "Even when our eyes are closed, there's a whole world out there that lives outside ourselves and our dreams."

Personality:

One way to describe Edward is stubborn. Despite what people may say if he has his mind set on something then he’s going to find a way to make it happen, which is what drives him forward through most of his life. Sometimes his stubbornness gets him into trouble but Ed tends to sticks to his guns and only giving in to certain things. He’s very goal-oriented as well, focusing on returning his brother to his body in some way or another. Yet Ed doesn’t seem as determined to get his own body back to normal but he agrees with Al whenever it comes up. While Ed is willing to do almost anything to make things right, he’s not willing to sacrifice people in order to achieve it. His goals aren’t the only thing he’s stubborn with as Ed is the sort of person to believe in something and stick to it, even if it means he gets hurt in the process. And while there are times where it can blind him to other things it doesn’t completely rule his life, a lesson he learned the hard way.

To go with his stubbornness is his strong will that can often push him through situations where it seems things are hopeless. While he does have his moments of depression Ed can bounce back fairly quickly, sometimes with a push from someone else. He just needs a reminder of his goals and that he can’t just give up. Ed has his beliefs and while sometimes the truth of something is horrible he can’t just go along with it. There’s clearly a line in the sand that he himself can’t cross and he hates to see other people crossing it too. On top of all of that Ed is very determined and driven by his goals. This combination of traits usually pays off for him such as getting an alchemy teacher, recovering from automail surgery in a year instead of three, becoming a State Alchemist. Once his mind is set on something Ed has a hard time letting it go, though he’s learned that some things just aren’t possible.

Edward has a pretty big ego that’s often well backed-up by his skills and knowledge. Sometimes it does get the better of him and results in more trouble then he expected but most of the time Ed does come out on top. It’s really bad when faced with opponents of any kind or Colonel Mustang. His ego often leads to him being cocky and again, while he has the skill and knowledge to go with it, it often makes people angry and want to strike out at him. Ed really doesn’t have any issues being cocky when he should be serious and often finds enjoyment with some battles, whether they be verbal or physical.

It doesn’t help that he can be petty at times, often being offended at the smallest of things when others would just let them roll off of them. No other subject is as touchy as his height is. Someone can make a remark about being small or even just mention a word that could be taken as a short joke (if one is looking for them) and he can go into a rampage. Usually this is accompanied by a need for physical violence and over-exaggerating what was said which often results with Ed needing to be restrained by his little brother. In fact most of time Ed tends to deal with his conflicts with acts of violence or outrage, it doesn’t matter who it might be. It doesn’t help at all that Edward has a very short temper and is quick to anger. Whether it is his short complex or dealing with serious matters, Ed’s temper often gets him in trouble.

To make matters worse Ed has a tendency to be reckless which ends up with him being seriously injured or breaking his automail. Thankfully his determination, strong will and stubbornness often mean that he doesn’t run away from a fight but he also won’t let himself die either. Most of his fights usually result in a lot of damage to surrounding buildings and he doesn’t tend to think about it until after the battle is done and he has an angry mob after him. Ed is also the sort to leap before he looks, to jump in feet first without planning first which can cause him to panic a little but his quick thinking saves him in the end.

While enemies get the violent approach other people get a different sort of treatment. His way of solving situations can be attributed to the fact that Ed can be abrasive and rough. Ed doesn’t tend to sugar-coat the truth for people, not even when they’re hurting emotionally and could do with some comfort. Life sucks but if they can stand up on their own two legs then they should keep moving forward. It’s a form of encouragement – Ed’s version of encouragement actually. Sometimes it can be called sympathy with a harsh twist as it usually gets people to move forward and continue on with their lives. Really he’s just not that good at dealing with giving people comfort, though he tries a little harder to be nicer to those he’s formed close bonds with. That’s when Ed shows his real compassion for people. He also shows kindness towards most children in his own way by making it seem like it was his idea to spend time with them.

Due to the brothers’ failure to bring their mother back to life and the consequences of the rebound Ed’s grown to be a sarcastic cynic. He happily and bluntly relieves people of their delusions of god, reality and their self-importance. While he himself is an agnostic and often makes comments about god he neither believes or disbelieves if god is real or not, he simply sees the (sometimes harsh) truth that’s laid out in front of him. If anything Ed sees the world through alchemy, Equivalent Exchange is everywhere just like the lesson he learned from his teacher – one is all, all is one. They are all a small speck in the grand scheme of it all, them being the one, and when he dies he’ll become part of the all.

Sometimes Ed has an issue with authority figures, namely Mustang who Ed has a tendency to harass any chance he can get. While he can be respectful if he wants or needs to, he generally tends to treat everyone more like some sort of friend than someone with a higher or even lower rank than him. He doesn’t hesitate to poke fun at people or being brutally honest with them, though Ed does know when to hold his tongue most of the time. Sometimes he can even be a bit vindictive and can rub people’s failures in their face or give someone an ironic sense of justice. Ed has discovered that there are dark, sinister shadows lurking within the military so he’s become very cautious of whom he trusts and who he doesn’t. Yet once someone has gained Ed’s trust he tends to stick with them like a loyal dog. However there are, of course, some people that he would trust far more than others and some he trusts begrudgingly as there’s some sort of conflict between them.

Edward is very energetic most of the time. He doesn’t like to sit still unless he has something to do such as research. It means that Ed loves to travel and is very impatient. Things often have to be done on his schedule or he feels as if he’ll die from boredom. However, there are times when he can be very stationary for long periods of time besides just studying, though not in the sense of being physically still and more sticking in one place for long periods of time. As long as there’s something to keep his attention, Ed can usually find some kind of busy work. Sitting still just isn’t really his thing for the most part unless there’s a book in front of his face. He also despises milk in any and all forms, except in stew and claims it to be something like a life-time enemy of his.

Because of their mother’s death and father’s disappearance, Ed has some parental issues. While he loves, adores and even tried to bring back their mother, he has a lot of anger towards their old man. He blames Hohenheim for their mother’s death as their father had left them and shuns his father’s attention. Ever since their failed attempt at human transmutation Ed had carried around both his sins and his guilt, too afraid to express the latter, especially towards his brother who has to live a shell of a life thanks to their dabbling with forbidden arts. While he may not freely talk about what they did or the full consequences of their actions, Ed literally lugs around his sins in the form of automail. However it’s the other situations that tend to be the heavier burden such as when they discovered the fact that the Philosopher’s Stone was made by sacrificing humans. There are times when Ed questions if all of this is a form of punishment for committing an alchemy taboo.

[personal profile] moveforward 2013-05-12 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
Strengths/Weaknesses:

⊖ Excels in hand-to-hand combat & spear/staff & short blades.
⊖ Has lots of energy and experience traveling long distances. He's built pretty sturdily.
⊖ Knowledgeable in chemistry and alchemy.
⊖ Very creative in his transmutions.
⊖ Pretty brilliant, if he does say so himself.
⊖ A quick thinker. He can be in the middle of a battle and turn it in his favor pretty fast.
⊖ Doesn't take crap from people for long. He can put up with it for a time, eventually Ed's gonna get them.
⊖ Determined/goal-oriented. Ed sets his sights on a goal and he won't stop to achieve it, no matter what sort of bumps they experience along the way.
⊖ Outgoing. Well, I wouldn't really call him outgoing because he's not exactly sociable or friendly. But he is approachable. Finding something to talk about isn't all that hard with Ed.
⊖ Tricky. This may not be good for the people who find themselves on the wrong side of him but he can easily trick stupid, proud people into giving away their secrets.
⊖ Puts all his notes in travelogue form. All alchemists disguise their work with some sort of code. A travelogue is what Ed uses. Not even Al can decipher it.
⊖ Speed and agility. Despite the fact that he will hit you for calling him short, Ed's size actually works for him. It makes him faster and more flexible then some of his opponents.
⊖ Loyal. While it's not always easy to gain Ed's trust and loyalty, once a person has it, it's pretty hard to lose. He will come to their side and fight for/with them.

⊖⊗ Automail right arm and left leg.
While it means Ed has excellent built-in weapons, it can also be something of a burden at times. Especially considering he doesn't take very good care of it, or the fact that it gets broken. Good thing his mechanic is here. Thanks to Winry it can survive in the cold now but it burns in the heat.
⊖⊗ Protective older brother mode.
Most of the time Ed doesn't have to worry about his brother in a fight for three reasons. 1. Al grew up learning how to fight alongside him. 2. Generally he's a giant suit of armor. 3. He's never ever beaten his little brother when he's been stuck in the armor. Though that doesn't mean that Ed doesn't worry at all. Actually, Ed pretty much worries about his brother all the time. How can he not when it would be easy to lose him by breaking the blood seal? But more importantly, Ed's drive to get his brother's body back is one of the big To-Dos on his list because who knows how long it'll be before his soul is pulled away from the armor. Sometimes people try to threaten his brother and Ed can brush it off but then there are other times when he just can't and it really gets to him.
⊖⊗ Alphonse Elric.
He is weak to Al. Some of it is deep buried guilt and some of it is just Al. After their failed transmutation and placing Al in the armor, Ed was so afraid that his brother hated him that he couldn't talk about it for years. Even then Winry was the one who had to express it to Al. At the same time his brother is the main reason Ed keeps going through with his goals. It doesn't matter if he ever gets his arm and leg back so long as Al gets his body. There is practically nothing he wouldn't do for Al. (He even sacrifices his alchemy at the end of the series for his brother.) Not to mention that the brothers have a pretty unshakeable bond. There isn't a lot that can get them seriously fighting or upset with each other. All of their experiences have only brought them closer together.
⊖⊗ Protective mode/shonen hero complex.
Like with above Ed is protective over his loved ones. So much so that they can be used against him. While, yes, they can be a strength as he always tries to be happy around them and stay strong/determined it also makes them a weakness. Even Kimblee figured this out and used Winry to get Ed to do what he wanted. And it doesn't really just stop at loved ones as there are times when random innocent people get involved. Ed is not the type to let people get hurt/killed because of him or even his brother.
⊖⊗ Winry Rockbell.

Her tears and her wrench are pretty fearsome. Ed just doesn't stand a chance against either, honestly. He's pretty much had a crush/loved her for such a long time. Unlike him and Al, they argue - a lot. Okay, most of the time. It's just how they've always been as they have equally stubborn personalities (and are both hiding deeper feelings for each other). He hates seeing her cry so he doesn't like to tell her bad news or that they got hurt. To be honest, Winry is source of strength for Ed. She's always there when he needs her, is always the same and the reason to return to Risembool. Still, just like his brother there isn't really anything Ed wouldn't do to keep her safe. Even following orders he doesn't approve of. Ed also won't really allow himself to admit his feelings for her, not until he can fulfill his goal of getting Al's body back. But it's pretty obvious how he feels - even with their arguing.
⊖⊗ High pain tolerance.
Again, a good and bad thing because that means Ed can take his licks and keep going. Lost a limb when trying to transmute his mother? No problem, let's give up more to save Al's soul. Pole jammed through his side? Let's pull it out. In fact, Ed was able to go through automail surgery for two limbs as a kid when some adults won't even try it. He also endured the pain to recover in a year. But this is also pretty bad because it means Ed won't stop fighting until he's on the brink of death if he has to keep going.
⊖⊗ Alchemy obsessed.
While this has helped him quite a lot in the past and Ed pretty much excels at it, it's also a crutch. Need something built? Use alchemy. Need a weapon? Create it with alchemy. This has pretty much been a constant in Ed's life ever since he was young and he depends on it a lot. Alchemy pretty much consumes his life all the time, whether it's using it to studying it. It makes normal, everyday tasks a bit harder for him to do but that doesn't mean he can't. Alchemy is just easier. He can also get sucked in to studying it and ignoring everything around him for long periods of time.
⊖⊗ Equivalent Exchange.
This is a concept most alchemists follow - "In order to obtain or create something, something of equal value must be lost or destroyed." Ed too, follows it for the most part. Not just in alchemy but also in life in general. It can work out pretty well for Ed a lot of the time - give something and get something in return - or it can bite him in the ass at times - the price could be too high to pay. But it's real disadvantage comes when others disregard it completely. There are some who will willing take and take without giving anything in return, there are some who will do terrible things no matter what the cost - something Ed is not willing to do. It's easy to get one up on Ed if the other is willing to throw away the principals of Equivalent Exchange to do it.
⊖⊗ Stubborn.
The stubbornness that Ed shows can be a good thing in the sense that he never gives up. He refuses to give an inch on his beliefs and goals, even if it means taking the long way around to achieve what he desires. Trouble is he never gives up. Not when he's bleeding and dying because dammit, he's just too stubborn to stay down permanently. Screw everything else -- Ed knows what he wants and if you're standing in the way, he'll go through you if he has to, especially if he doesn't like you.

⊗ Has a short temper all the time sometimes. Except in battle he tries to keep a cool head.
HE IS NOT SHORT, DAMMIT!
⊗ Sleeps. A lot. Sometimes like a log...and snores.
Eats a lot too.
⊗ Enough guilt to last a lifetime. He keeps some of it bottled up.
⊗ Self-sacrificing. Ed will gladly give himself over if it means the safety of other people.
Cats. He's allergic. No, he's not but god, Al would drag around a million cats if Ed let him.
Dogs and children. Alright, not exactly. He kind of lets them dogpile on him because he likes them so much. The kids part though is really true. He's a pretty big softie when it comes to kids, especially when they're lonely ones. Ed tries to act like they're such a big bother but he doesn't fight too hard when they want to play.
⊗ Terrible at phoning home. It's not really the fact that he's bad at it but more that he doesn't want to call with bad news.
⊗ Trouble magnet. No seriously, he must have a target painted on his back or that red coat serves as a beacon because Ed always seems to manage to find trouble wherever he goes.
⊗ Nightmares. Ed has some pretty horrendous nightmares thanks to the things he's seen.
⊗ Refuses to kill. It's tough when the bad guys play dirty and you don't. :|
⊗ Loud and rude. Not really good for being stealthy or making friends (though he somehow manages to collect people anyway).
Teacher's scary, Al.

⊗⊗⊗⊗ We meet again, you bastard. AKA: Milk is evil.
⊗⊗⊗⊗ Van Hohenheim. Ed pretty much dislikes his own father for walking out on them and not coming back before mom died. Talking about Hohenheim is not something he likes to do, and he definitely doesn't like hanging around him - but Ed can put up with him if he has to.

[When it flicks on there's a flash of red and yellow in between skies of blue, green trees and brown dirt. Quick breathing as if someone's running and sounds of uneven footsteps as the thud against the ground.]

QUIT FOLLOWING ME YOU DAMN MUTATED BIRD! I DON'T HAVE ANY FOOD FOR YOU! [Anyone who's not gotten sick from watching the bouncing video will get a good view of a large Skarmory flying along behind the new arrival. It's keeping up pretty well with the running kid but it seems this kid is pretty determined to get away from it as he puts on another burst of speed.]

[He's quick to dart into the trees and after a minute it looks as if he's lost the Pokemon as he hides under a tree. Then he grins cockily as the video focuses in on his face fully. Say hello to one Edward Elric everyone.]

Lost it.

[Ed stands up, brushing the dust of his red coat thinking he's clearly victorious. That is...right before everything goes blurry again and there's a lovely shot of the ground with sounds of fighting right before it shuts off.]

[It comes back on a few minutes later to give everyone a video of Ed looking disgruntled and irritated with the Skarmory standing behind him (oh look they're practically the same height) - NOMMING ON HIS PONYTAIL.]

Alright. Someone tell me what the hell this thing wants from me and STOP EATING MY HAIR!! [He jerks his hair away from the Pokemon, distracted from the PokeGear for a minute.] And how to get rid of it. Also, directions back to Amestris would be great right about now too, I've got important things to do tomorrow. I seriously hope it doesn't require going back to Creepy Town with the weird woman who thinks she's my mom.

[The Skarmory starts reaching for his hair again with its beak and Ed's eye twitches before he shifts away from it a step. Or two.] Information in general would be great. Like why there's been music playing since I woke up and how to get it to stop. It's already starting to get on my nerves. I haven't had time to go through all the stuff "mom" gave me yet with this thing following me. [Jabs a white gloved thumb at the Pokemon creeping closer.]

Al, Greed. If you guys are here, give me a call. [Nope, no - not going to ask for Hohenheim.] Winry, you too if you got dragged into this crazy place.

[Doesn't plan on asking for anyone else. If they know him, they'll show up.]

Third Person Sample:

Right. Okay. So waking up in a strange house with some woman calling herself his 'mom' did not go over well with this particular new arrival. The instant he'd been able, Ed grabbed his 'stuff' and bolted out the door, not even taking the time to look through it. To be honest the only thing that was familiar was the red coat he'd made not even an hour ago. Standing outside the house he'd woken up in, he put the backpack down and shrugged out of the plain brown one he'd been wearing to keep himself from standing out back home.

He stuffed the brown one into his backpack before slinging it over his shoulder, but not before a strange device fell out that he collected before standing. Ed could go through the contents later, after he figured out where he was and how he was supposed to get back. Sitting around here was not an option. For a moment he focused in on the device that he still held - not sure what it was. Looked like something Winry would love.

No no no. Now was not the time to be thinking of that. What he had to do was get back to Central so he could stop Amestris from becoming a Philospher's Stone. They could not afford a distraction. Looking around the little town reminded him a lot of Risembol which meant he was probably on the outskirts of the country somewhere. And there was music. Possibly from a speaker somewhere.

That was unhelpful.

There was also no sign of anyone who he'd been around just before waking up here. It doesn't stop Ed from moving through the houses, calling out names. "Al? You here? Greed - Ling! Mr. Gorilla, Lion King! If you bastards are here then you should show yourselves."

With each step Ed took it felt more and more like there was something watching him, following. Not good. Greed had said that Al hadn't been Al. Not good. Whatever had his brother could have come too. He caught a glimpse of something out of the corner of his eye - the clear glint of something metallic as he turned around the corner of one of the houses. Faster and faster. Until he was running and whatever was chasing him was still following. He skid around another corner and stopped, spinning quickly -- ready to attack whoever it was. Or whatever.

What Ed did not expect is a giant metal bird staring him down. It was as tall as he was! "What are you? A new chimera? Can you talk?"

"Skarmory!" Was the only thing that came out of its mouth.

Was it even a word? Ed didn't think so. Maybe that was its name. He grinned, ready for a fight with it. "It doesn't matter. If you want me, you bastard, you'll have to come get me!"

A clap of his hands, preparing to transmute the device in his hand into a weapon and--!

Nothing!!

"Shit!" Why wasn't his alchemy working?

No time to figure it out as the creature started towards him. While he was loathed to do so, Ed turned tail and ran. He veered when he saw a path clearly leading out of the town, every so often attempting to get his alchemy to do something, anything.

Character
Name: Diarmuid ua Duibhne ( Lancer )
Series: Fate/Zero
Timeline: Before his second duel with Saber-
Canon Resource Links: Here!
Personality:
Upon first impression, you might have no idea that this polite and courteous individual happened to be an ancient Irish hero. Who would? Irish heroes are generally categorized as fight happy and forward individuals, and he's polite enough to kind of dispel that image. He likes using formal words and acts as if following an ancient type of chivalry, which is different compared to the brash acts commonly found in heroes around his era. If you didn't know him better, he could actually pass as your archetypical Knight in Shining Armor (which he sort of is.)

Chivalry. That in itself is Diarmuid's code of conduct. Being polite, fair and courteous, that is his way of living, back in the past, and even now as a Heroic Spirit. Like any person bound to chivalry, Diarmuid much prefers a fair fight by giving his enemy a chance to prove themselves, and adjusting his handicap so that he'd be able to match them. This part of his trait is glaringly obvious during his second duel with Saber, where he took on a handicap in order to match Saber, who was faking the injury they got during their very first duel in order to make it a fair continuation. After all, the Fianna had always been one for fairness.

And then there's the fact that he's pretty much loyal to those he's sworn himself to; In fact, he's so loyal that it caused him disasters the two times he swore loyalty to his masters, past or present. Really, if there's one phrase that'd fit Diarmuid, it'd be 'he's like that really faithful dog willing to stand by his master through thick and thin.' And that's all he really wanted in his life. To have someone he can serve under, and be proud of doing so. That desire was so strong that it was his sole wish that drove him forward during the Grail War rather than anything else. It's only natural, of course; considering his last Master killed him from a grudge that never went away from a certain incident in his past.

Diarmuid was a warrior completely used to evading pursuit attempts. Thus, it's only natural that Diarmuid prefers having some sort of distance from his acquaintances before he gets to know them better. It's not much of a problem if you're viewed neutrally, as this would just mean that he's not that forthcoming about his past. Though if he suspects someone of something, he's going to be even more guarded about everything about himself, which would usually mean that it'll take a longer while for him to be able to at least trust that person with basic details of himself.

When it comes to anger, Diarmuid could be considered one with a temper befitting an unmoving rock. Getting a rise out of him is difficult, and getting him to show his annoyance of you is also an arduous task. Though, should those be stacked up continuously and without stopping, it's certainly possible to cause this sensible man to completely snap and curse the world around him. This was readily apparent during the time when Kayneth commanded him to kill himself using the Command Mantra, causing all his built up stress from having Sola falling in love with him; and Kayneth's distrust despite his loyalty, to burst. This obviously resulted in him dying as someone more of a monster compared to a heroic spirit, as he cursed everything about this war in his dying words.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Proficiency with Weapons: Being a knight of the Fianna, it is only natural for him to have an abnormal skill with swords and spears.
+ Calm: He is always able to keep his cool in a lot of situations; often times being the voice of reason in some situations too.
+/- Fair: He is always one for an equal fight, and will not resort to underhanded means to win a battle.
- Bottled Emotions: He always try to keep his stress bottled in, and when it explodes, well- see below.
- Rage: ...While the only circumstance of this happening is really just the straw breaking the pile of anger he had accumulated, this is still something that could happen.

Hm...

[The sight of a certain knight just musing in front of the Gear would be one of the first thing that greets you in today's feed.]

A small question to you all this fine morning, if I may—

[There's a sigh as his calm face belied the noise that you're hearing right now-

That of girls fawning over him.]

Does the Gym Leader of this city fawn over you when you defeat her? And if yes, which words did you use to dissuade her from an attempt at courting you?

[Because his polite words just caused said Gym Leader to squeal even louder rather than backing off.]

Third Person Sample:
Three months.

That had been the time he spent within this place, alongside the fact that it was the same length of time he had gone through without seeing the familiar cityscape of Fuyuki. It is of no surprise that he had at least been adapting quite well to this place's strange quirks. He's certainly glad that his prior experiences enabled him to traverse these 'routes' without nary a trouble, save from the stronger creatures that lies in wait to ambush him.

Now, normally he would've just thought of that as a signal that the hunt had began, but ever since he woke up with his Budew, she had been his sword the moment a Rattatta appeared in order to block their path forward. It's strange to not fight anything that challenged him without fighting alongside his partner; but he had to adapt, after all, without her he would have been completely incapable of protecting himself in this place (his last attempt at making a makeshift spear failed horribly when the local Officer noticed him doing that).

"—ew?"

The familiar sound broke him out of his reverie as he noticed the little one tugging at his pants, prompting him to move his body to get into a more comfortable position from his seat on the ground to accomodate the little one on his lap.

Naturally, she immediately took up the spot.

"...Can't sleep again?"

For being his sword in battle, she acted like a child whenever they're not in battle, leaving him to think about his past life as a father. Perhaps that's why she grew on him quickly, as she's a reminder of the life he left behind so long ago.

It certainly felt nostalgic, this journey of his.

Character
Name: Ryuunosuke Uryuu
Series: Fate/Zero
Timeline: After his discussion of theology with Caster in episode 13
Canon Resource Links: Type-Moon Wiki
Ryuunosuke has more canon information in the light novels, which can be found here. I've put together all of Ryuunosuke's appearances here.

Personality: Ryuunosuke can easily be summed up with the phrase "cool." Everything he does is centered around the fact that it's "cool." Killing women and children? Cool. Summoning a demon? Cool. Attempting to make a pipe organ from a living girl? Cool-- Actually no, that one failed.

Let's back up for a moment. Ryuunosuke is a murderer. He's always been fascinated with death; "if blood and screams in splatter horror had been at least a little more realistic, he wouldn't have become a homicidal maniac." Ultimately what he wanted was to understand death. Through the numerous murders he's committed he's not only learned the true nature of death, he's learned just how important life is. Ryuunosuke is very fond of his philosophies and won't hesitate to go into depth about them if asked.

Oh, but that doesn't mean that he's careless. He knows what he's doing is illegal and frowned upon by society. Ryuunosuke isn't stupid. The majority of the murders he's committed are still considered missing persons cases. He's very good at disposing of the bodies and removing any evidence he might leave. He has a good understanding of why he's not allowed to run around murdering people, but at the same time he can justify it in his own mind. That doesn't mean he feels guilty about what he's doing, however. Ryuunosuke enjoys killing and doesn't feel bad about what he's doing at all. He doesn't mind being compared to a demon - in fact, he seems to like the idea. So Ryuunosuke knows he's a horrible person. How does he feel about being thrown in jail or executed? Well, obviously he doesn't want to be caught - he does a good job of hiding the murders, after all. At the same time, he's prepared to face death if he is caught. He doesn't mind the idea of prison either. Hey, free food and lodging, right?

Ryuunosuke is very laid-back. He doesn't get angry at all during the course of Fate/Zero. He does get irritated and frustrated (usually at his own failings rather than anything anyone else has done), but he never gets angry. When he returns to his "workshop" to find it in ruins, Ryuunosuke doesn't get mad. Instead, he starts crying. He's usually a very happy and upbeat person, but the sudden mood-shift isn't unheard of. He sees himself as an artist when it comes to his murders - seeing all his hard work destroyed was heart-breaking for him. He doesn't take it as a personal attack, instead seeing it as an attack on the art itself. People simply don't appreciate his artwork; he understands this and accepts it for the most part. It's when things are actually destroyed that he reacts to it.

Mood swings aren't something Ryuunosuke experiences much in canon. For the most part he's very happy or excited. Even when he's in a more neutral state of mind he's smirking and seems quite pleased with himself. Ryuunosuke is a very emotional person though, and when he's happy, he's very happy. When he's upset, it's the end of the world. He can shift moods very easily, but it does take a lot to upset him - assuming you're not destroying his "art," of course. He's also very good at faking emotions and normalcy. He understands what constitutes as "normal" and he does his best to replicate it so that he doesn't draw any unwanted attention to himself. He does have to lie low, after all. He doesn't need anyone knowing just what it is that he does in his spare time. Ryuunosuke does quite a good job with this when he's not incredibly excited - once he finds something "cool," normalcy goes right out the window. He'll gladly shout about just how "cool" something is, even if that "something" is a massive monster about to destroy the city. You know, "cool" things like that. Ryuunosuke cycles through emotions very quickly; he recovers very easily after bursting into tears when he discovers that his "art" has been destroyed - and within five minutes he's getting excited and smiling again. He bounces back to happiness very easily because his emotions are very shallow. He doesn't mind, or even realize that this is abnormal.

As mentioned before, Ryuunosuke is quite clever. He can hide the murders very easily and takes pride in covering up his tracks. He's quite manipulative and enjoys tricking people into believing that he's normal. Making friends is very easy for him, even though the majority of his friends are on a very superficial level. Again, he doesn't mind. Ryuunosuke enjoys seducing women, so that he can kill them, of course. He's quite charming and respectful - the only thing that might give a woman pause is the fact that he doesn't always seem entirely sincere. Still, he's never failed to lure a woman back to his apartment and kill her, so Ryuunosuke's choice in women certainly says something. He relies almost entirely on his gut instinct when it comes to choosing women and so far he hasn't had any issues. This leads to overconfidence of course, and he'll probably start slipping up here in Johto.

So it's rather obvious that Ryuunosuke isn't normal. He acknowledges that he's a "demon" and he's doing things that are illegal, but he never says he's crazy. Ryuunosuke doesn't believe he's crazy, after all. He's just different. Just how crazy he is is up for debate, but Ryuunosuke certainly isn't sane by any stretch of the imagination. He's sadistic, cruel, cunning, manipulative, and clever; but he's also overly eager to discuss his actions and thoughts on murder. He hasn't slipped up yet, but he's getting sloppy. Ryuunosuke is a slave to what's "cool" and will do anything to maintain his image of "cool." In short, he's a serial killer who's a bit too excited about his "art"; he's an artist who specializes in blood-spatter; he's a sadist who believes he's a theologist. Ryuunosuke is a lot of things, but above all else, he's "cool."

During his stay in Johto, Ryuunosuke has mellowed out a bit more when it comes to killing. He obviously can't kill anyone in Johto and so takes other approaches to causing chaos. He's particularly fond of taking on Team Rocket missions, but he also does quite a bit of petty theft on the side. He's not completely content being unable to kill, but the Pokémon make up for it in some ways.

Strengths/Weaknesses: ✔ Ryuunosuke is a great actor. He's been pretending he's normal from a very young age and has a great grasp on how to act like he's normal. This carries over to acting in general; he's very good at faking emotions and pretending to be something he's not. Ryuunosuke knows just how cute he is and he'll abuse that for all he's worth. He can also make himself cry, which used to work wonders when he was younger.
✔ He's very good with the ladies. Ryuunosuke is cute, as mentioned above, and he can certainly be charming. Of course he usually uses this in order to lure young women back to his "workshop" where he can kill them, but that's just a minor detail that you totally don't need to worry about.
✔ He's also good with kids for the same reason. He's very friendly - to the point of being overly friendly with children. They tend to like him and he likes to cut them open them too! He used to have a bracelet made by Caster that allowed him to control children, but that was broken.
✔ Ryuunosuke makes friends very easily. He's always very eager and excited to meet new people. He likes being around others for the most part and enjoys spending time with people he likes. He doesn't usually keep friendships for too long due to moving around thanks to his little hobby of murdering women and children.
✔ While it really won't be of any use in Johto, Ryuunosuke is descended from a magus family. This (along with an ancient spellbook he found in his parents' house) enabled him to summon the servant Caster for the fourth Holy Grail War. He has the Magic Circuits that the other Masters have, though his were previously inactive and forgotten. He doesn't know much about magic at all, but his bond with Caster and the Command Spells he received allowed him to control Caster. The fact that he didn't is another matter entirely. Ryuunosuke still has the Command Spells on the back of his right hand, though again, they're useless in Johto.
✔ He's very technologically inclined. Ryuunosuke learns very quickly and is interested in technology. It's not something he really experiments with very often, but he used to take things apart when he was younger and figure out how they worked. He does come from 1993, however, so Ryuunosuke's technological knowledge will be a bit rusty in comparison to what Johto can offer.
✔ Taking things apart also applies to people; Ryuunosuke is very interested in how people and animals work as well. As a child he would harm animals to figure out how they reacted and that has only increased in severity with time. He has a rather expansive knowledge of how the human body works - most of it was gained through "research" involving cutting people up rather than studying books. For awhile Ryuunosuke studied to go into medicine, though he never actually completed his degree.
✔ He's a quick learner and is rather intelligent. Ryuunosuke can master things quite easily once he sets his mind to it.
✔ Ryuunosuke is quite creative as well. Granted, his "creativity" usually involves hurting people in the name of his "art," but who else would have thought to try to make a pipe organ from a human's organs? That didn't work, but the point does remain; Ryuunosuke tends to come up with bizarre ideas that could possibly be brilliant if they weren't so sadistic in execution. Speaking of the pipe organ, he's also musically inclined - it's another (less sadistic) art form he's interested in.
✘ Obviously, Ryuunosuke isn't normal. He's sadistic, crazy, and well-aware of it. While he is good at acting, he tends to come off as overly-enthusiastic and flat. He's only happy or excited around other people, which seems incredibly strange after awhile.
✘ Ryuunosuke is a slave to "cool." He'll sacrifice just about anything in order to do what he considers "cool." If he has to throw his friends under a bus, sure! If he has to out himself as a crazy, homicidal serial killer? Why not? All in the name of "cool."
✘ He's so laid-back it can actually be a fault; Ryuunosuke doesn't really care about anything other than what he considers "cool." While he does get excited very easily, this doesn't mean he actually cares. It's really only killing that genuinely excites him anymore, and even that loses his interest after awhile.
✘ Ryuunosuke has a difficult time getting attached to anything that isn't his "art." This includes people. The people he considers "friends" really don't know much about him and he doesn't connect to them the same way most people connect to one another. Ryuunosuke doesn't experience anger at all, which makes it difficult for others to really understand him. It doesn't help that he's crazy.
✘ Boredom is another major flaw of Ryuunosuke's. He gets bored with things very easily and this tends to lead to him acting out. Killing eventually started to bore Ryuunosuke, so instead of stopping, he found other ways to make it interesting. Thus the pipe organ. When his ideas don't pan out he gets very frustrated with himself and searches for even crazier ideas to try out. It's a never-ending cycle that inevitably leads back to boredom.
✘ The lack of magic hinders Ryuunosuke in the Holy Grail War back home. Because his summoning of Caster was imperfect, his Servant isn't very well-suited to the class he was summoned as. Ryuunosuke knows nothing about the Holy Grail War or magic in general, which left both him and Caster in a terrible position for the War. This doesn't have any affect on him in Johto, but it did lead to all the other Servants and Masters aligning against Ryuunosuke and Caster back home. If they show up in Johto, it's safe to assume they won't be very fond of him here either.

Character
Name: Tsunade
Series: Naruto
Timeline: Upon waking up post-Shinobi World War Arc.
Canon Resource Links: http://naruto.wikia.com/wiki/Tsunade
Personality:
When one thinks of Tsunade, you’re never quite sure what they’re going to think. It could anything from her astounding strength, to her monstrous temper, to her history with gambling and losing everything, to her drinking, to her skills as a medic and one of Konoha’s legendary and greatest Hokages. However, when one first meets Tsunade, one of the most revered and honored kunoichi in the world, the first impression they get may not be their greatest. First, she definitely has some temper issues. Naruto listing her bad qualities resulted in her challenging him to a fight. Keep in mind Naruto was, at the time, twelve years old and indefinitely weaker than her. When Orochimaru and Kabuto bring up her loved ones and insult them in front of Tsunade’s eyes, her response is to go berserk and begin to smash everything in her path. Finally, this trait is apparent after returning to Konoha and before she even left. She ends up calling the Third Hokage, her teacher, a shitty old man for not taking her advice, and even calls Gaara, another Kage of a powerful village, a little shit when he disagreed with her plan to let Naruto and B fight the war. As a final example, she often destroys her desks in small fits of irritation at slight provocations. In fact, it’s been lampshaded that Tsunade buys them in bulk because of the frequency they’re reduced to splinters. When she catches Jiraiya spying on her, she ends up breaking two of his arms, most of his organs ruptured, and six of his ribs. That’s quite a tempered response.

Her outrageous temper is far from her only vice too. Tsunade is quite notably a very social drinker. She drinks with Jiraiya three times in two days, getting drunk on each occasion. She also has been noted to blow off work or very important duties so she can go have a nice little bottle of saké, or, to tend to her other past time, gambling. It’s noted that Tsunade’s drinking was so prevalent, the editor ordered Kishimoto to cut it entirely or save it rare occasions. Regardless, she still makes plenty of appearances with a bottle in the series, and, the databook states her favorite food is saké. However, her all time favorite vice is gambling. Tsunade’s life before becoming the Hokage for twenty years consisted of gambling, gambling, and gambling. Her gambling was so prevalent, Jiraiya was only able to find her by her nickname, “the Legendary Sucker” because of her tendency to blow through extremes amount of money on gambling and lose every drop of it because of a hilariously unlucky streak. In fact, for the past twenty years, Tsunade borrowed massive amounts of money, gambled it all away, and then changed her appearance and skipped town to avoid debt collectors which speaks volumes about her habits. There is also her laziness. Tsunade can most commonly be seen avoiding her massive, mind boggling amounts of paperwork. In fact, her laziness has often lead to her blowing off work all together, or, perhaps even more telling, taking on the job naps at her desk. Another thing to note is that Tsunade is certainly a very vain woman. Despite being fifty, and looking about seventy thanks to Sozo Saisei, she constantly employs a transformation Jutsu to keep herself looking younger for no other purpose than vanity. If one were to point this out and call her old, her nasty temper flares up. The word old from Naruto caused Tsunade to pound a table, and, when Jiraiya called her old, her response was simply to yell at him and criticize him for his own perverseness. Whatever you say about Tsunade, one thing will always remain constant - she does have her flaws.

One thing to note in relation to Tsunade’s temper is her toughness. Tsunade is quite the bold person. She says what she wants to say and is often very, very cocky. Her bluntness doesn’t hold back for her calling Jiraiya a perv and rejecting him (again), or insulting and snarking at the other kages, and blatantly telling other people that she really is going to kick her ass. She even stands up to a terrorist who invaded her village, telling him off for his twisted philosophies and injustice towards her village and its people. Her arrogance is a particularly noticeable point. She repeatedly places her abilities ahead of others, stating that she’ll be able to win against them with ease, or telling Naruto it’ll only take a finger to win against him. Finally, she states she can heal anything and everything and that she can’t lose by sheer virtue of her importance and ability. Her boldness is quite a difficult part of her personality in tandem with her determination. There’ll be absolutely nothing that stops Tsunade. When Pain ends up nuking Konoha, Tsunade, who is close to death from healing everyone in her village, ends up clearing fifty meters in seconds to fight a man who killed her equal despite being close to death. When Tsunade decides that Naruto should be allowed out of the village and to fight, she butts heads with just about everyone else in the series, from the elders, Shizune, the rest of the Kages, and Danzo. She doesn’t once change her opinion despite being toppled, and, the second she’s able to bring it up again and physically fight for it, she indeed does so. When Orochimaru and Kabuto attempt to flee, Tsunade chases them for miles, attacking and smashing everything in her path. When she fights against Madara, she takes sword wound after sword wound only to keep on pressing on to defeat him. She even states that she has an intangible, “Will of Fire” - an inextinguishable determination - and that’s her true treasure, and, that, with it, no matter how difficult things are, she’s going to keep on fighting and not give up. Another example of this was after Mabui asked her to reconsider a request to be teleported through something that would cause certain death. Tsunade insisted that she take this dangerous method of transportation anyways, and, upon being grilled about her decision further, said that she has ways of making it through. She was correct, of course. There’s many things Tsunade is, but a quitter isn’t one of them. With these personality traits, dealing with Tsunade is a bit difficult. Her brash, free-spirited, recklessness is a trait that has made her practically famous in and of its own right.

However, despite this, Tsunade can also often appear carefree. She’ll sometimes give off a loud, great, smile whenever she hears great news or wants to appear particularly reassuring. Whenever she’s in a mood that doesn’t involve anything that can properly irritate her (which, granted is a lot of things) or doesn’t require a serious outlook, she can have an energetic, and very upbeat and cocky demeanor. When she returns to Konoha, she goes through every room and heals the entire hospital population while having a cocky grin and hopping around the entire floor to the point where Shikamaru asks, “Hey? Who’s the lady with the big personality?”. When she gives a gift to Nawaki, she appears bubbly and carefree, grinning and even teasing Nawaki with a great amount of elation. She later reciprocates this attitude towards Naruto in a similar circumstance. She gives him a necklace and then, at a later date, grins at him and tells him he’ll make a fine man someday.

Despite this, Tsunade’s tough exterior has a rather soft and sweet interior. Despite how she readily criticizes and bluntly tells off Naruto, her faith in him is almost unrivaled. She’s stuck up for him constantly behind closed doors no matter what the risk is. After challenging Naruto to a fight, instead of striking him, she kisses him and tells him to grow up to be a fine man someday. Another example of this is when Naruto readily blames Jiraiya’s death on her, she does not yell at him, she just lets him go to deal with the feelings because she cared for him and didn’t want to upset him further. Other examples of her great love for Konoha, and its people who constitute for her soft side are consoling Shikamaru at his mission’s failure stating he still did a great job, healing Rock Lee to help him continue his dream, or readily accepting Sakura as an apprentice to aid her and her ambitions. However, her biggest example of her love came during Konoha’s invasion. Her love for the village caused her to heal everyone in the village she could, and to protect them from anything that came in their path. In fact, her effort and love that went into healing and protecting thousands ended up landing her into a comatose state, which says volumes about her dedication towards Konoha and its people and how willing she is to protect people she loves or innocent people in general. Another example of softness is her surprisingly tender speech towards Madara about her will. She readily accepts and explains her shortcomings, but states that, despite all of these, she’s certainly not weak. Additionally, upon hearing that men were dying en masse in the fourth division, she immediately decides to send herself into the battlefield through a dangerous method of transportation that most people would die from and she does this without a second thought. Finally, on the spoilers side, upon waking up from Madara’s onslaught, her first instinct is to heal the other kages who were merely stabbed. In the mean time, she ignores her own wounds which involved her being chopped in half.

A great example for her contrast between her tough personality and her inner gentleness can be found in Jiraiya. When Tsunade stated that she’d be upset if she lost Jiraiya, Jiraiya replies with laughter stating that it’s rich that she’s actually going to cry for him. Tsunade replies angrily stating that she isn’t ever going to be crying for someone like him. Despite this, his death undoubtably left a deep scar on her. Tsunade attempts to keep control and not let his death get to her for a while. She works for a couple of days, seemingly fine. However, the moment she steps outside and blows off Shikamaru, she ends up collapsing in the hallway, crying over the lost of her friend. Something she directly stated she’d never do, most likely out of her feisty personality.

Finally, it should be noted that Tsunade is a very competent leader in general. She’s able to formulate teams that work well together, create organizations for specific purposes, and create strategies based on the limited information she receives. She was able to rebuild Konoha twice, and improve relations with countries that just previously attacked the village. She even reciprocated these favors towards the village, and, was stated to be the best pick for the Head Commander of the united Shinobi army (that consists of 6 military, economic, and political strong holds) if it wasn’t for her comatose state. In fact, she was considered to be such a great leader, that the Fire Daimyo, her boss, was hesitant to replace a comatose Tsunade and bring in another kage. In other words: even a comatose Tsunade is still the best leader Konoha has to offer.

Character
Name: Oerba Dia Vanille
Series: Final Fantasy XIII
Timeline: After being taken onto the Palamecia/the end of Chapter 8.
Canon Resource Links: Here's a wiki!

Personality:
The first time you see Vanille, you will probably think one of a few things. She's clearly a cheerful, cute young woman - seemingly never sad, the sort of girl who'd do anything to make everybody else feel the best they could. She'd wake you up with a smile and a hug, before continuing her wonderful life. In fact, for some, her pep and cheer seems almost impossible! Gosh, how can one person be that happy? IT IS IMPOSSIBLE.

And, yes, Vanille is a kind young woman, if not emotional. She quickly feels sorry for Hope and tries to cheer him up, and tries to cheer up Serah straight away. And when she speaks of home, it's with happiness - when she speaks of sad things, she doesn't seem afraid to be... sad. Though perking up quickly.

But, Vanille's a lot more complicated then she seems. That cheerful smile? But a facade, for her true deep issues. Being a L'Cie, being hated by all of the land she's on, basically ruining so many peoples lives? Well, of course she's not as cheerful as her smile would show. No, she's a sad person, trying to run from her own guilt, using her lies to make people trust and like her. She's afraid of herself, she's afraid of harming her friends and allies. And she wishes she could start fresh, get away from her past.

She also has quite a bit of guilt, yes. She blames herself for so many things - the failure of Ragnarok, and the marking of Dajh. And, yes, she did do these. This guilt drives her quite a bit in her facade, but it also guides her to, yes, become a better person. At her current canon point, though, Vanille isn't sure if she wants to escape yet.

A discussion of Vanille cannot be complete without a mention of Fang. Fang and Vanille? They're pretty much the most important people in the world to each other. They're the only two who know each other at the beginning of their quest, and they'd do anything for each other, on their quest to return home.

Vanille is also a survivor - she likes the smell of nature, it reminds her of her nostalgiac home of Gran Pulse. That fur pouch? She made it herself from a dead bear. She's not as strong as Fang, and Fang normally protected her, but... she's not useless. She much rather prefers nature to large towns - the smell makes her feel nostalgiac and happy.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Vanille, surprisingly, can defend herself - though she is more of a mage in-game, she is still a main character. Plus, you know, the whole 'going with Fang to be Ragnarok but chickening out thing'.
+ Liar or not, Vanille is pretty good at motivating people.
+ And helping others, too! More then herself. She wishes to help as many people as she can before turning to a monster.
+ Actually, Vanille seems to believe in fate a lot - though, she wants to change others fates... she's also the sort to make a family around her, and defend that family until the bitter end.

+/- Vanille is a freaking good liar - she says every thing, true or not, in the same tone and look. This is both a plus and minus, seeing as it helps her in her own goals - but, as she puts it, she sometimes forget what lies she's told somebody. Yeah. Her lies actually set a lot of Final Fantasy XIII in motion...

- Vanille tends to flee from her problems instead of talking about them or anything like that - she doesn't like her past, she doesn't like the things she's done. She also doesn't like having to fight - that's why she joined Sazh in running from dying.
- Vanille is also, well, a mage. She's not good at striking people, her attack style is magic. This won't count too much in Route - it just means that she'll be weaker then somebody who was a fighter before-hand.
- Also, right now, Vanille is in a sensitive place - she was just caught to get exucuted. She'll be fragile - though, how is this a weakness? Because, Vanille will try to mask that, of course. She'll just want to work on helping others, instead of working with her own problems. Because, whelp, her lying. Her guilt also did just get shown RE: Dajh, and she still is blaming herself - no Sazh forgiving her yet.

Samples
First Person Sample:
[Vanille had been spending quite a few weeks working in Goldenrod - she'd been there for a few weeks! And she hadn't been chased out or anything - nobody here was scared of Pulsians! The Pokegear flicks on as Vanille is holding a small stone - a Moon Stone.]

And there we go! A full set of Evolution Stones!
[But, Vanille, why did you collect those? She gives a bit of a happy... sound, before digging around her pocket - and getting out a necklace. Of evolution stones.]
Don't they just look so nice like this? I tried to fit an Upgrade on, but it made it too heavy.
[Pout. Vanille then stood, the Pokegear coming with her.]
So, when I finish this shift, I'll be back at the National Park. It's a pretty nice place - but what's your favorite place? I haven't looked around this land too much - I've been busy working!
[A slight pause, as her Vanillite floated into screen.]
Oh! Right! I think Scoops close to evolving - she's been training a lot on her own. I wonder if she'll stop frowning so much? I can't stand it! She just never looks happy!
[Vanille does sound a little grumpy - but she's kidding. Really. If Scoop wants to be grumpy, Scoop can be grumpy. A slight um came from Vanille, as she turned off the feed.]

Third Person Sample:
It had been a few days since Oerba Dia Vanille had awakened. It had also been a few days since Oerba Dia Vanille had started chasing that silly monkey-like creature who had stolen her PokeGear. She was just looking it over and - yoink! How very naughty!
But, today, Vanille had stopped to check something. Something rather important... something that had been on her mind this whole time. Sure, she'd checked when she first arrived - maybe it had gone away - but it had still been there.
Her Brand, the mark which showed she was a L'Cie. She could hide it under her clothes, but if it was still progressing - well, that would be rather bad here. She hadn't seen a single soldier, nobody seemed to be looking for her. She had her Scoop, but Scoop wouldn't be able to topple her if she... well. Vanille bit her lip a little, as she dropped to the ground and pulled up her skirt, so very nervously.

Her nervous expression, however, turned to a huge smile not a second later.

Her Brand was exactly as she had seen it when she was with 'mother'. Oh, that mother! She acted like Vanille's own, and Vanille liked her! After all, family is family, even if they're but new. Plus, it had been a while since she'd gotten such a nice, homecooked meal before heading out to a place which smelled so natural. She would have stayed in New Bark for longer, but. Well. Monkeys with hands on their tails are sneakier then you might think.

Vanille let out such a happy sigh, though. Maybe this meant she could finally rest - if only until it started again. This couldn't be that free of a trip.
But... Vanille's thoughts were turning to her friends. Sazh had still been locked up - what happened to him? And what about the others - were they safe?

What about Fang?

"Well! Let's get going, Scoop! That monkey's not going to wait for us!" Vanille soon said, getting to her feet and putting a hand to her Vanillite. Scoop let out a small sigh, as Vanille hugged the ice cream a little - before starting to skip off.

Wreck-It Ralph wiki.
Vanellope wiki.

Personality:
Vanellope has an enthusiasm for life, even if hers hasn't been the greatest. She's taken the time to explore her game to its fullest since she doesn't have the luxury of leaving it like non-glitched characters, curiosity and need to understand leading her to places nobody else knows about. It's rather lucky, for her, as the rest of Sugar Rush views her as nothing but a mistake. Despite this, Vanellope tries to hold her head up high, deflecting with confidence and an unusual sense of humor.

There are times when this gets out of hand. Her jokes don't tend to get very far with the other characters in Sugar Rush, leaving her with next to nothing for defense when it comes to receiving their scorn, and when she gets confident about something, her focus inflates her ego. This results in knowing--beyond a shadow of a doubt--that she is a spectacular racer when she doesn't even know how to drive a real kart, and while this eventually is true, her positivity is unfounded. It's rare for her to outwardly show her doubts, and she'll only truly show this "weak point" to someone she trusts.

Not being properly socialized, Vanellope doesn't exactly fit in even when you ignore the fact that her glitched status causes her to be public enemy #1. Her jokes are often inappropriate, whether they lean towards crude-mannered or just poorly timed, and her perceptions are a little skewed. Even after being told that the "gold coin" she finds belongs to Ralph and that he needs it, she decides it's okay to take it if she can reach it first. Since she's so sure she'll win, this theft is just "borrowing" in her mind, and she can return it to Ralph after the race, never mind how precious it seems to be to him. When she sees that she and Ralph can help each other, she strikes up a deal and deems that they are friends before genuine affection forms.

Once her plans go sour, Vanellope is quick to come up with a new one. She attacks problems as soon as they pop up, making decisions on the fly. This includes needing to forgive someone when they've wronged her--when it needs to be done, she'll get it done. Not only is she able to use her wits to her advantage when resolving something, but she picks up on new knowledge quickly. She acts fast, facing the challenge of having to learn skills with vigor, as shown by the "learning to drive" montage, and even when she's first introduced by how quickly she snatches Ralph's medal. Not only does she zip around before she can be stopped, but she's able to use Ralph's lack of knowledge and attentiveness to her advantage to gain the higher ground.

When all is said and done, this kid is just that: a kid. Her personality can enhance that fact. She's a goof, she often thinks of things in terms of herself, and she dreams big--no matter how much bullying she gets from King Candy and the other racers, Vanellope tries to not let it get in the way of her ideals or of those of her friends.

Samples
First Person Sample:
Now this... [The girl on the screen has a smirk that takes up half her face.] This is more like my game. Hey, Mr. Creamsicle, over here!

[The camera swivels to reveal a Vanellite blowing a cold mist at a berry bush. When he's called, he looks up with a soft chirrup! and floats on over.]

Now he ain't perfect, a'course--hard to be, you know? But even if he's not actually made of sugar, he sure looks like he is! And he's got the right attitude.

Bet I could make a real cone out of him, yet...

[Vanellope, what does that even mean.]

Third Person Sample:
In the short time Vanellope had been in Johto, she had noticed one very important thing. Cookies and sweets were in woefully low supply around the Rocket base. Since she hadn't done that well at the whole 'bring us strong pokemon' thing and the job was available for the taking, the girl took it upon herself to rectify this grave situation, signing up for kitchen duty.

One would have thought that, after the disaster that was baking her kart, Vanellope would have given up on all things cooking-related. Then again, one has to keep in mind that, to Vanellope, her kart was a rousing success. Besides, it had been Ralph to break the decoration tubes! She wasn't anywhere near as strong, so she shouldn't have any problems whatsoever, right?

Right.

Her confidence only grew as she gathered the ingredients. The dumb wheel-shaped thing wasn't of much help, but the Zubat attempted to, straining as it tried to drag the flour over to her giant mixing bowl. Just before it tipped, Vanellope skipped over to grab it, and between them they were able to lift some of it up and into the bowl. Perhaps a tad more than was necessary, as any observer would have been able to point out to the little girl, but as the three were alone in the kitchen...

In went a splash of milk and four eggs--shells and all--before she moved the bowl over to the beaters for proper mixing. Ever the speedster, Vanellope wasted no time in cranking the speed up to its highest setting, and it wasn't long before the walls were splattered with the sorry excuse for...what even was she making? Cookies? Cake? Given the lack of care taken in her preparation, the assumption that the young Rocket hadn't a clue either was probably a safe one. When the concoction finally makes it into the oven--still in the metal bowl, though she'd had to take out one of the racks in there to make it fit--Vanellope's looking more than a little proud of herself, and she walks away with a smile after turning up the oven's temperature (to an actually reasonable amount, surprisingly.)

Little does she know that, if this slab of "baked goods" is actually eaten by anyone around the base, they're more than likely to toss their cookies in more ways than one.

Android 18 | Dragonball Z | Reserved [2/?]

[personal profile] tsundroid 2013-05-17 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality:
Though Android 17 and 18 are originally introduced as cold-blooded killing machines via Trunk's own recollections of the pair, it becomes quickly evident shortly after their reactivation by Dr. Gero that the pair are anything but what the androids of Trunks' memories were like.

From the get go, Android 18 displays a stubbornness towards the idea of submitting to a 'master' in the way Dr. Gero would have her and her brother do. 17 is much more vocal about his disinterest in being the scientists' pawn but 18 quite willfully goes along with 17's dismissal of the scientist. She even goes so far to dismiss Dr. Gero's attempts to control her by awakening Android 16 despite the scientist's insistence that she not wake him. Honestly, waking 16 is less wishing to wake the android for his own sake and more simply displaying the lack of control Dr. Gero has over her.

Though the twins' background is never fully detailed, one aspect is clear - they were both once human. The term 'android' is a bit of a misnomer in this case. Both Android 17 and 18 were originally completely human and enhanced from this 'bio-organic base' as Dr. Gero's notes put it. It is this augmentation and attempt at control through it as well that leads the twins to hate Dr. Gero and likewise hate being controlled in any way.

Control over herself is one of the hallmarks of 18's personality thanks to this. The thought of merging with Cell is repulsive to 18 not only because of the thought of 'dying' but likewise because of the threat of losing control of herself. If she merges with Cell, she will lose her own identity and simply become bio-organic mass powering the creature.
This idea of merging with Cell then is the final, horrible insult to a woman who's control over her very life has already been ripped out of her hands more than once before.

This need for control and comes to represent itself in the attitude 18 readily displays alongside her twin. The pair appear cold, callous and rather like spoiled teenagers. 18 herself loves to indulge in rather materialistic activities such as shopping and seems to have a great love of clothing and jewelry while 17 has a taste for meaningless time-wasting activities. Both of them are rebelling in their own ways through these sets of actions, displaying prominently the lack of control anyone has over them and relishing in it. 17 is much more vocal but 18 herself shows off how little control even authorities have over her as she aids in stealing vehicles, taking clothing and destroying public property as well.

After 17's absorption by Cell, a different sort of woman emerges from under the film of teenage bravado, power and rebellion. She shows distinct caring for 16 after he protects her from Cell, making it obvious that she isn't quite as cold as she may have originally seemed. She shows real, geniune fear at the prospect of being absorbed as well, showing that much of the fearlessness she displays can be labeled as part of that bravado. Later after her healing at the Lookout, she is likewise shocked not only at the dragon itself but at Krillin's wishes for her and her brother. She even displays gratitude towards Krillin's efforts... well, in a mute and reticent sort of way. "See ya" totally counts as a "thanks", right?

It should be noted too that 18 has a distinct sense of humor that dances all around the spectrum of sarcasm. From harsher, blunt sarcasm to simple teasing, it's another display of just how much personality beyond 'android' 18 really does have. This sense of sarcasm turns from harsher to more gentle as time passes in the series, though she never really loses that biting, rough edge completely. 18 isn't one to mince her words much.

What all of these tidbits boils down into is one clear point. Despite being a cyborg and despite displaying a cool face and rough attitude much of the time, 18 is as human emotionally as she ever was and as any other human might be too. Perhaps her need for control makes the woman reticent to display such 'softness' readily or perhaps it is all vestiges of the person she once was before becoming a cyborg.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths
- 18 can endure through pretty much anything. After being converted to a cyborg by Dr. Gero, there's little that rattles her... well, unless it's emotional. But I'll get to that. Suffice to say if it's the physical, she can take it, even if she is human again.
- She loves to shop and has a good eye for color, style and such, even when it comes to other people.
- 18 is stubborn and full of willpower. There's no way you're getting her to do something she doesn't want to do unless it's through threat of death. And even then it might be negotiable.

Weaknesses
- Thanks to her human status now, her incredibly strength is gone. Aaaaand she may have a hard time remembering this in the beginning.
- Emotions are a complex little bag for 18. Oh sure, she can remember some things about being human but emotions were never her strong point even then. Particularly if the emotion tends towards anything romantic.
- She doesn't like losing. At all. She also doesn't like being second best. She's less vocal about this than 17 might be but it's not because she likes it anymore than him.
