Personality: When one first meets him, Solf J Kimblee seems to be a nice man with a horrible reputation; he's spent a fair amount of time in prison - seven years, in fact - but it actually seems to have done him some good. Instead of becoming withdrawn or feral, as might be expected (most of his time there was spent in solitary confinement, after all), Kimblee is polite and conversational, the sort that will ask after your family and offer to help you with your bags at the train station; he's very well-kept - perhaps a bit overly fussy about his clothes and general appearance, but the white suit and neat ponytail seem to require a level of fussiness, and really...there are worse things to deal with than a little bit of vanity, right?
Of course, there's no denying that he's still a little quirky, though again, most of these quirks are harmless. His posture often seems uptight and closed-off, but he's a very vocal person, often humming to himself or singing when he's in a good mood; he's prone to thinking out loud and talking to no one in particular when something catches his attention, and he tends to talk with his hands, his gestures offering brief views of circular marks that appear to be tattooed into his palms. He'll be attentive when he actually addresses you, but it's often to ask questions about you that really should have obvious answers - things like why you're making a particular expression, or how you feel about something that you obviously found jarring enough to give a physical reaction to. He's very inquisitive, actually, and fascinated with human nature; at times he seems more like a distant observer of the human race rather than a member of it, though if that's pointed out to him he'll just shrug it off. He's aware of his own humanity; he just happens to find members of his own species fascinating, and he doesn't see why he shouldn't subject them to the same study as everything else - humans make very good subjects for analysis, you see, and understanding them is crucial to knowing how to act normal enough to get along with them.
...right. Yes. Well. That's...maybe that sort of talk might just be a sign that it's a good time for a subject change! Asking him about himself will actually yield plenty of results; for example, those tattoos on his hands are transmutation circles, arrays used to perform alchemy. He was once a State Alchemist in the service of the Amestrian military, after all; he'll make no secret of his backstory, nor will he skirt around the fact that he was involved in the Annihilation Campaign during the Ishval Civil War, serving as a human weapon and assisting in the genocide of a race of people, carving a crest of blood into Ishvalan soil. He isn't bothered by it; his description of it will be blunt and unflinching, but strangely enough, there's no coldness or distance to his tone - if anything, there's an odd sense of...is that fondness? And if you try to tell him that you're sorry for what he's gone through, he'll simply smile at you and ask you why. After all, he did well - he's responsible for the deaths of more Ishvalans than any other State Alchemists. He did what he was there to do, and he's very proud of his work.
...oh.
Bluntly put, Kimblee is a Chaotic Neutral force of nature, a sociopath in a nice suit; he does what he's good at and he loves what he does, and "what he does" seems to be throwing wrenches in everyone's well-laid plans, just because he thinks it would be interesting to watch everyone flail. Life simply isn't worth living unless everyone's standing a great chance of dying, as far as he's concerned - he adheres to a rather warped version of "to the victors go the spoils," believing that the right to live only belongs to those who are strong or smart enough to earn it. (It's important to note, however, that "earning one's right to live" doesn't necessarily involve killing one's opponent; if you're capable of outsmarting him, forcing him into a stalemate or just being lucky enough to find some way to escape him during a fight, he'll accept that as a temporary victory for you. He prefers not to have to escape from battle himself, finding it humiliating, but that's more a matter of personal pride than anything.) When it comes to survival, he holds himself to the same standard as he does everyone else, as to do otherwise would be hypocrisy - he'll gladly put his own life on the line if the situation calls for it. If anything, he hates watching other people do his work for him, especially since he's perfectly willing to get his hands dirty along with everyone else.
He's a nihilist, both morally and existentially, though leaving it at that is oversimplifying it; he doesn't believe that life has any sort of higher purpose, nor does he believe that killing is any more reprehensible than anything else that people can do to each other, but he doesn't deny the value of life in and of itself - after all, even if he doesn't think it has any intrinsic value, that life had to have mattered to someone, even if it's just the person who was living it before he killed them in the face. As such, he doesn't believe in forgetting the dead, or treating their deaths as trivial; he makes a point of remembering his victims, believing it to be disrespectful to do otherwise. Of course, this doesn't stop him from doing the killing in the first place...
The fussiness over his appearance mentioned back at the beginning of this section actually stems from something surprisingly relevant to all Kimblee does, and that would be a particular fondness for aesthetics and a keen sense for detail; this also extends to the way he utilizes his weapon of choice. Known as the Red Lotus Alchemist among his peers, Kimblee favors explosives - or, specifically, using alchemy to trigger unstable reactions in various substances he touches, causing them to explode violently. He strives to make these explosions as "beautiful" as possible, and he seems unsatisfied with sheer destructive power alone; most of his criteria for what constitutes beauty and what does not actually seem to be based around sound. He's a very aural person overall, actually, as most of the things he claims to enjoy are sound-based; of course, those sounds are also generally what most people would consider "really damn awful." Like loud explosions less than ten feet away - the louder, the better! Or the sound of people burning up or being crushed to death. Or buildings being destroyed. Oh, or the screams of the damned, as experienced from standing in the center of a maelstrom of torment.
Yes, really.
However! Kimblee is fully aware that indulging in these things at will and generally being a raving psychopath aren't exactly conducive to surviving in society - hence the earlier remarks about observing humanity. He's learned how to act and what to say to avoid revealing his "heresy," as he calls it, in front of people he can't trust or those in positions of authority - and so to most, he projects an air of amiability, even if he still comes off as a bit odd. He'll be civil, even gentlemanly to most people he meets; if he disapproves of someone or what they'll doing, he'll make no secret of it and won't sugar-coat his opinions, but at the same time he strives to remain classy and will usually avoid resorting to childish insults or taunts. His sense of humor, on the other hand, has a bit of a mean streak to it; for example, he's been known to play cruel or frightening tricks on others just for the sake of scaring them, but he makes it clear that it's all in good fun - he just likes to play a bit rough sometimes.
At the same time, it might be a good idea to keep on your toes around him once you realize that something isn't right; after all, he ended up in prison for blowing up the last group that didn't.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths
Given that Fullmetal Alchemist as a series is Incredibly Shounen, like several of the characters therein Kimblee possesses a good amount of sheer determination and tenacity (though admittedly it's to extents that may or may not cause a lot of facepalming to anyone observing, because really, man, sometimes enough is enough). Outside of possessing a ridiculously strong will to live at all costs, he doesn't give up easily in his everyday life, either, even when injured or not feeling up to his full potential. He doesn't like the idea of others doing his work for him; he refuses to take credit for things he didn't do, and if he's given a task, he wants to ensure that it'll be seen through to the end.
Kimblee has a very good eye for detail; though he claims he simply remembers those who happen to catch his interest, he actually has an eidetic memory. He retains the most information about people, as opposed to objects or his surroundings, with particular attention being given to remembering his victims; he never forgets faces, even those he's only seen once, and he can describe very specific details about even brief encounters.
He's rather intelligent, though his intelligence is geared more towards analysis and the gathering and processing of information. He's good at reading people, and knowing what to say to get them to open up to him; whether they're opening up in a positive manner (e.g., civil communication) or a negative one (e.g., screaming at him to shut his mouth) matters relatively little to him, as most people go - the point is that he finds out what he wants to know, and he's good at knowing what buttons to press to either calm people down or rile them up. He's also very aware of the emotional states of the people around him; he doesn't feel very much himself, but he's very sensitive to sharp swings in mood of those around him, and it's saved his life on a few occasions when people have decided to turn on him.
Despite the fact that he spent several years imprisoned in solitary confinement, Kimblee's physical fortitude is good, given that he managed to survive (albeit in critical condition) what probably should have been a fatal impalement through the left side of his abdomen; on a later occasion, he was still alive and at least vaguely conscious after having his throat slashed open, despite suffering the massive blood loss that comes with...well, having one's throat slashed open. His coordination and balance don't seem to have suffered too much, either, given that he's still able to do all the crazy parkour whatnot that seems to accompany the fighting style prevalent in the series with a reasonable degree of success. (The crazy parkour whatnot will be toned down significantly, as stated/requested in the FAQ. Much to Kimblee's annoyance, but really, that's more than half the fun.)
Weaknesses
Well, to pick up where the Strengths section left off - while Kimblee's balance and coordination haven't suffered, his speed and reflexes have. His physical response time has slowed down a lot since before his incarceration, and he's at a definite disadvantage in most fights where he has to rely solely on himself; this is greatly amplified when he's fighting someone younger than him, or someone who is smaller and therefore more agile. His skill and power as an alchemist is also something he's learned to rely on in confrontations; being in a situation where he isn't able to use that alchemy is only going to further disadvantage him against others - he can't fall back on what he's familiar with to get him out of situations.
He's also a very proud person; he tends to overestimate exactly what he can do, or sometimes underestimate what his opponents can do to him. This leads to a lot of trying to push himself too far, or taking on someone well beyond his current skill level and trying to defeat them anyway. He tends to get it into his head that he should be able to do something, whether it's realistic for him to actually be able to do it or not, only to realize when he's in the middle of getting completely trashed by his opponent that he's being unreasonable. The tenacity covered in the Strengths section also serves as a double-edged sword, given his pride; while sometimes he'll grudgingly acknowledge that he can't do something, that's usually only reserved for situations like "being in critical condition and unable to move without yanking out his life support." Otherwise, he's very stubborn, generally refusing to accept assistance or support from anyone unless he's directly ordered to work with them; even then, he makes it very clear that the only way that he allows others to back him up is by assigning them the esteemed position of "meatshield."
While it's rather difficult to make Kimblee genuinely angry - he can handle most insults well enough, though he'll get a bit linefacey about it - he doesn't respond well to condescension; he can handle those above his station being condescending, as it's their right, but being patronized or looked down upon by others who have no right to do so (at least, in his opinion) will make him snap. He's blindly aggressive when angered, and will usually do whatever he can to hurt the other person, regardless of potential danger to himself or others; if he doesn't succeed in retaliating properly, he'll go into a deep sulk, glaring at whatever's directly in front of him and completely refusing to speak to others or acknowledge anyone else's presence. These lockdown periods are incredibly rare, but when they happen, shaking him out of it is difficult, if not flat-out impossible; he'll be 'gone' for anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days, so it might be best to just find a chair and start wishing you'd brought a book, because he's not doing anything until he's good and ready to do something - and once he's decided he's ready, you'll probably be wishing he would sit down again, because the sheer force of his "Let's do this thing!" will be double what it was before.
Also, as he's taken post-canon...due to the way the series ended for him, it's reasonable to assume that he's not going to be too thrilled about the sheer amount of teeth some of these creatures have on them. He's also not fond of caves/enclosed dark spaces, nor is he thrilled with Ghost-types, as they're a bit too reminiscent of the entity that caused said ending.

[Kimblee is actually addressing the network via video today; if he's at all off-put about that whole disappearing-for-a-month-and-a-half business, it's not showing in his demeanor. If anything, there's a light smile playing about his features; it's admittedly a little creepy, almost as though he's trying to be endearing, but at the very least, he sounds amused when he speaks, so maybe it's not so bad.]
My, it seems this place does still have its sense of humor, doesn't it? And here I thought that perhaps I'd only lost three days at worst - it was a bit of a surprise to find out otherwise.
Ah, but that's neither here nor there, is it?
[He tips his head a bit, gesturing idly as he does so - a vague sweep of a gloved hand in the general direction of the device; that smile hasn't left him.]
There's not much to report from home, unfortunately; it'll be a pleasure getting in contact with all of you again, however - hopefully you've all been at least reasonably well.
[And with that, the feed shuts off; however, that clearly isn't it from Kimblee tonight. A few minutes later, another audio message goes out over the private Rocket network; his voice is cold and clipped, nothing like the amiable tone from earlier.
He has no idea if he still holds his rank or not; he suspects he doesn't. Like hell if he won't throw it around anyway.]
This is Team Rocket Beta Solf J Kimblee, reporting back in for duty; to my superiors, I admit that I don't know what happened, but I assure you that it won't happen again.
To my subordinates, you are to check in with me immediately - and I expect a full report regarding what happened here in my absence. This is not a request, mind you; however, as always, those that are useful will be rewarded. I'm good to those who are good to me; it'll serve you well to keep that in mind.
Third Person Sample:
While Kimblee couldn't say he had any idea how any of this had happened, he knew for a fact he was very, very displeased with it; the Voltorb he was currently dealing with seemed to share the sentiment, as it had promptly tried to shock him into submission. Thankfully, it didn't have the full range of attacks that Kimblee remembered it having - its level seemed to have dropped back down to thirty, as opposed to the eighty-eight it'd had when Kimblee had given up on it the first time due to it turning into an electrified ball full of rage and attempted murder.
At least the fact that it seemed to have devolved made it easy enough for Kimblee to lock the stupid thing in the closet, because really now.
"I suppose you're wanting some sort of apology," he said from his position at the desk next to the closet in question, seated with his arms folded and legs crossed idly at the knee; his tone was more than enough to imply the likelihood of that happening being somewhere between zero and none. Really, he was fairly sure trying to talk to this thing at all was highly indicative that he'd lost his mind somewhere along the way, but he was running out of options and his starter was not running out of obstinance. "Honestly, you're lucky that I'm trying to work with you at all, given that earlier display of yours - incredibly rude, by the way. I ought to box you again immediately for it."
That was just greeted with odd, staticky sounds that Kimblee didn't understand; however, from the sound of it, he wouldn't be surprised if the stupid thing was telling him exactly where he could shove that box of his. He just sighed, bringing a hand up to pinch at the bridge of his nose for a moment as though trying to ward off an impending headache; his lack of ability to believe this crap was not remedying itself.
"Neither of us have time for this. Do you at least understand what a ceasefire is, or is that expecting entirely too much?"
More weird staticky sounds; at least these sounded less openly belligerent. More questioning than anything.
"Ceasefire. It's exactly what it sounds like. Unless you want to spend the rest of your natural life, however long that may be, in my closet, we're going to have to call one."
Silence.
"...all right, listen. Once you reach level eighty-eight, if you still want to attack me you're more than welcome to try. I welcome the challenge, really, as by then I'm sure I'll need some excitement in my life again. But until then, I need a starter that isn't useless - and my second is rather useless - and I'm sure you're a bit discontent with the lower level, hm?" He leaned back against that chair of his, resettling before he spoke again. "So why don't we both adhere to Equivalent Exchange, call a truce for now, work with one another and all that, and when it comes to the whole wanting-to-kill-each-other thing, we'll cross that bridge when we get there."
It probably said something when negotiating with his murderball was the high point of Kimblee's week; however, given that a few minutes later he was able to let the stupid thing out of the closet without being immediately shocked for his effort, it definitely wasn't a loss.
