APPLICATIONS!
Currently: Closed!
Route 29 has closed as of May 30th. For the continuation of the game, please visit [community profile] victory_road!

Applications will be normally checked during the weekend following the first and third Sunday of each month unless otherwise stated, and we will allow one application per person during one application cycle. Remember, the most characters one player can have at a time is currently set at five.

Applications received after 11:59 PM EST on Saturday of the first and third weekend of each month will be checked the following app weekend unless otherwise stated.

We now ask that potential applicants post their application in comments rather than linking. If their application contains explicit references to 'hard' spoilers (character death, unforeseen plot twists, big reveals, he was evil all along etc), players should put the application in their own journal or their character's journal and link it, making sure to mention the presence of spoilers within. For further clarification on our spoilers policy and whether or not your application needs to be linked, please check this page. Thank you for your cooperation!

The comment character limit on dreamwidth is 16,000 characters so apps no longer need to be split into multiple comments; however this is at players' discretion.

Please use the form below and post your application in comments rather than linking if you can. If you have any questions, feel free to ask either of the mods. You can reach us through emails, IMs, or PMs.

A reminder for those waiting to hear back, please don't be worried if we skip yours while going through them. It only means we needed a little more time to research!

Helpful links!

Strengths/Weaknesses: No one in the universe is perfect, especially when it comes to Outlaws. Gene has shown himself to be rife with several flaws throughout the course of the series. For one, he's got way too high an opinion of himself, without all the life experience to warrant it. Gene loves to talk himself up, and tries to cash in on a reputation that he hasn't even made yet. On more than one occasion he's skipped out on a debt with the promise of paying once he's "hit it big", like it's perfectly okay.

Another big one is his utter irresponsibility in every aspect of his life. Starwind and Hawking is constantly in the financial red, due to Gene's inability to manage finances and frequent spending on things they don't actually need. Without Jim around to take care of him, he'd probably be dead broke. It's literally the child out of the two that has to play the adult, because Gene is too much of a dunderhead to rein himself in. He fights carelessly and frequently has to get bailed out of the local jail, drinks like a fish, and makes a lot of trips to the red light district with vital funds. From the moment Gene gets money in his pocket, it's just a count-down to him having none.

His constant urge to prove himself causes him to make rash, nearly suicidal decisions, under the belief that his own luck will get them through. The fact that his last minute plans usually work can often be attributed to nothing more than the fact that Gene's the main character. Anyone else wouldn't have survived the same odds. He's driven to take long shots and dangerous missions, thinking more of the pay-off than the consequences. Cache of Dragonite at the bottom of a dangerous water planet with giant monsters? He's in. Go to a forbidden area of space, with a legion of Pirates and who-knows-what in your way for something that may or may not be there? Sure. Duel a legendary, unbeatable assassin? Might as well do it sooner than later. Outnumbered? Hell, go through anyway. He's a perfect example of how being hot-blooded isn't always a perfectly heroic trait to have.

Of course, that's not to say he's nothing BUT flaws. Gene's got his good traits.

Though Gene is willing to kill in order to protect himself, he'd prefer to handle things at a moderate level. He knows how to show restraint in a confrontation, and isn't quick to brandish lethal force unless his opponent is. Seeing people he loves die in front of him is a fear that stems all the way back to his childhood, and watching his father get killed as Gene was jettisoned to safety. Nobody, and I mean nobody is ever going to hurt people Gene loves if he can stop it. This also extends to innocent bystanders, especially if they're young women.

Gene is also one of those adults who never lost his ability to really dream. No matter how low class he may be, or how low on the socio-economic ladder Starwind and Hawking hovers, he continues to dream and strive for something better. He wants the Outlaw Star to be famous in the galaxy, and damned if he'll let anyone or anything get in the way of that dream.

He also never leaves a man behind. Gene doesn't believe in abandoning an ally or someone he owes a debt to. He sticks to them and helps them through whatever trouble surrounding them. When he was arrested by the Federation Police and incarcerated, and Pirates attacked the colony, Gene could have taken his friends and run. Instead he chose to fight, helping drive off the invaders and bolster the remaining officers. When it was over, he simply left with a careless grin and a smart-ass remark. The one time he abandoned Suzuka, it was at her own request. She told Gene several times to leave her behind, so he could reach Melfina. Even as he finally left, it was clear that he didn't like not being there to back her up. Gene knows what loyalty is.

Physically, Gene's alright. He's in great shape, knows how to brawl with the best of them, and knows his weapons. He's more of a "jack-of-all trades, master of none" type of guy. He's good with a gun, but not a marksman. He knows how to fight, but he gets his clock cleaned by enemies who are real experts.
