APPLICATIONS!
Currently: Closed!
Route 29 has closed as of May 30th. For the continuation of the game, please visit [community profile] victory_road!

Applications will be normally checked during the weekend following the first and third Sunday of each month unless otherwise stated, and we will allow one application per person during one application cycle. Remember, the most characters one player can have at a time is currently set at five.

Applications received after 11:59 PM EST on Saturday of the first and third weekend of each month will be checked the following app weekend unless otherwise stated.

We now ask that potential applicants post their application in comments rather than linking. If their application contains explicit references to 'hard' spoilers (character death, unforeseen plot twists, big reveals, he was evil all along etc), players should put the application in their own journal or their character's journal and link it, making sure to mention the presence of spoilers within. For further clarification on our spoilers policy and whether or not your application needs to be linked, please check this page. Thank you for your cooperation!

The comment character limit on dreamwidth is 16,000 characters so apps no longer need to be split into multiple comments; however this is at players' discretion.

Please use the form below and post your application in comments rather than linking if you can. If you have any questions, feel free to ask either of the mods. You can reach us through emails, IMs, or PMs.

A reminder for those waiting to hear back, please don't be worried if we skip yours while going through them. It only means we needed a little more time to research!

Personality: Remember, it’s just a job. And there is no place for emotion in a job. We do our duty as grim reapers, no more, no less. We follow orders from on high. And one more thing… take good care of your glasses.

Perhaps it could be said that William puts the "grim" in grim reaper. It’s an easily drawn conclusion (and an accurate one at that) seeing how he appears from the outside: no frills, no nonsense, a reaper of rules and order who follows the code* all reapers operate by to the letter. It’s also quite easy to dismiss him as being all these things and nothing more but it would take a closer eye to notice the finer facets of what exactly makes a reaper a reaper. The most presented before us is William as the manager of his department. The boss. The dude who makes newbies cower with one glare but that’s just one facet. Though most of his personality seems to stem from his work ethic, there’s almost something more, the man beneath the suit, so to speak.

Simply put, he can be the boss from hell. Of course, this all depends on your own work ethic. Do well enough and he’ll leave you alone. Otherwise, he has his eyes on you with no intention of letting up on that surveillance. Normally, William can be seen with a rather dour expression: the eternal lineface so to speak. This sets him far apart from his two subordinates, Grell Sutcliffe and Ronald Knox. Someone has to be the brains of the operation, after all and if he won’t, who will? Unfortunately for his subordinates, William seeks perfection in the workplace. Everything must be just so: hair perfectly done, uniform pressed and worn the right way, reports handed in on time, souls stamped and filed away. One can say William holds rather strict standards for both himself and his work environment. But despite the fact he works rather closely with Ronald and had known Grell since their training days (as according to anime OAV canon), he shows them no measure of favoritism. If anything, it seems he’s far stricter toward them than he is with anyone else. Other people are treated with either mild respect or indifference, this of course depending on how William is treated in turn but those two? They can never get a break.

William’s training method to curb his subordinates misbehavior seems to lie in force, as if that would be the only method they would understand. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to drive his point home very well or those two happen to be terribly thick headed. A common threat comes in the form of overtime (which Will hates as much as Ronald does, apparently) and paycuts but his most favored method involves his scythe which takes the form of extendable pruning shears. He will, without any hesitation and quite literally get all up in your face with said scythe if he finds something offensive about what you’ve just done/said. William shows no qualms about sending the blade out without caring where it lands or if the target manages to avoid it. Truth be told, he uses his scythe for most everything. It acts almost like an extension of his arm and William can be hardly ever seen without it in hand. He seems to be skilled with its use both in and out of combat, be it for using it to serve as a way to get from one place to another or adjusting his glasses or beating up Grell.

As a reaper, he deals greatly in death. This would normally be the sort of subject matter that weighs heavily on one’s shoulders. Other people balk at the idea, some are sent spiraling into depression and haunted by having witnessed so much death but to William, it’s just a job. Just a nine-to-five that pays the bills. Getting attached to the job is unheard of. There is no place for emotions whatsoever. Souls are souls and therefore are easily collected and filed away. No one deserves mercy or special treatment unless they have proven themselves worthy. This line of thinking leaves William with the sort of exterior that portrays him as hardly affected by anything at all. It takes quite a bit to get a reaction out of him and even then the closest you would get to an outward reaction would be a scythe to the face. His own emotions are so easily hidden behind that ice-cold face that one could indeed go so far as to call them repressed. He never shows outward joy, outward surprise, outward sorrow... unless of course this is something that disrupts the order he requires to do his job.

Truth be told, it seems that work is all William really knows and perhaps it is. As mentioned, he clings to these rules death gods follow as a way of life. There is nothing for him but work. “Slave of Commandment” as his image song is so aptly titled. Even the lyrics themselves speak of someone proud and indeed dedicated to their work but the word slave seems so aptly used. He follows these rules but seems to be rather chained by them as well.

The only thing in his life is work and without this, perhaps he would indeed find himself rather lost. Due to his having closed off his emotions, William gives off the air of one who appears rather socially inept though this is hidden beneath a frigid, distant exterior. Without a sense of delicacy, he attempts to react to ways best he knows how without a thought to shame or grasp of the situation. Most the time, he has a goal to accomplish and he’s not going to sugarcoat anything to get it to happen. He’ll take the most direct path without any distractions. While this is all well and good for production’s sake, this does nothing at all for William as an individual. Perhaps one can say all this repression leads to a measure of emotional constipation, maybe even confusion if he’s faced with something he’s normally unable to face… say things like fear and love for one. Things are supposed to be just so and if something disrupts that order, panic ensues. Well, panic or a scythe to the face depending on who was involved and what happened.

It's during the short stint he has with the circus that we see just what sort of reaper William is when taken out of his usual environment. He remains as no nonsense as ever, not even bothering to disguise who he is and remaining direct to the rest of the carnies. However, he doesn't make any move to befriend any of them. Even compared to Ciel who managed to "befriend" Freckles for the sake of staying undercover and trying to find out more about the circus, William remained as standoffish and as distant as ever. He left them with no remorse, no regret nor any sense of missing them. He isn’t sociable. Far from it, really. He doesn’t rub elbows or go out of his way to make friends. He’ll treat people with respect due them as long as they give it back in return. Unless of course that person happens to be a demon.

Demons happen to be the bane of his existence. When you’re a reaper fighting for order, what else would get in your way more than a demon seeking to steal away your work after all? The punishment for allowing a demon to make off with a soul lined for reaping is a written apology done in triplicate, after all. Apparently even the Board is aware of the threat. Demons are cause for extra work, cause for disorder, cause for further overtime so it isn’t any wonder that William feels a rather strong hatred for the creatures. One can even call it near racism for being so. To him, a demon is nothing more than filth, a hated animal, something so utterly vile that he’d rather not have anything to do with them whatsoever. And yet his ways of dealing with them when faced with one are childish to say the least. When forced to share sleeping quarters with Sebastian when they were both undercover at the circus, he reacted by drawing demarcation lines between them and outright refused to touch him even if he had to. His biases toward demons appear rather childish to say the least but perhaps it's the way that William treats all people. First impressions do matter when it comes to him as these seem to be what he bases his idea of you for the rest of your interactions

One can see that William’s own personal time is very valuable to him. Despite the fact that he seems to be married to his job, he detests overtime as much as Ronald does which seems to be one reason why he wants to get as much work done as quickly and as accurately as possible. Perhaps it isn’t just his personal time, it’s everything about his person. Truth be told, he hardly seems to talk about his personal life. William does strike one as a very private man, one who holds strict rules about his personal boundaries and just how much he is willing to open up toward someone. To be able to actually get William to talk about himself, you either have to be very patient or have managed to present yourself as someone he can trust. He keeps strict demarcations between his personal life and his work life, clearly not being the type who wants to mix both. His time is his and no one is allowed to disrupt it or take away from it. Fitting as he seems to devote his waking hours to public service. Surely the precious little time he has for himself he's allowed to be selfish about.

[ The feed comes on with this particular reaper seemingly on the road. He seems… troubled, if anything but then most of the newcomers do, don't they? But finally, after clearing his throat he speaks. ]

Good day. My name is William T. Spears of London's Grim Reaper Dispatch Department. I was told that this device allowed one to communicate with other individuals who have been brought to this world.

[ But how odd… there seems to be a purple… thing coming out of the tall grass behind him. William doesn't seem to notice though and continues to speak. The purple thing reveals itself to be an Aipom and it’s sneaking up behind the reaper. ]

I wish to know if anyone is familiar with my Department or of a ship named the Campania. I am in search of two of my subordinates who I last recall--

[ There is a pause and a sudden cry when the Gear is dropped. It clatters to its side and all you can see is what seems to be a struggle between the reaper and the Aipom as William tries to swat at it. In its tail's grip, one can see what seem to be William's glasses. The scuffle is over when the Aipom manages to knock William to the ground and run off into the nearby forest. ]

M… my glasses… I have to get them back...

[ What you see next is William groping over, squinting at the feed. ]

...My apologies. You weren't meant to see that. I shall continue this at a later date. For now, I have something of the utmost importance that I must attend to.

[ And with that, he cuts the feed. ]

Third Person Sample:
He was more than certain that tree looked familiar. In fact, most of these trees looked familiar. When one couldn't see, everything looked familiar. "Honestly… That Aipom. Once I get a hold of him..." William griped, stumbling about blindly in the bush. The entire forest was a big green blur before him. Not only was he lost but he had managed to allow his glasses to be stolen. Stolen! It was unthinkable, unforgivable, especially for a reaper of his position and calibre. There would be hell to pay once he got them back and could finally see.

"If only I had my scythe." The reaper mumbled, staggering as he steadied himself against a nearby tree.
Somehow, a part of him was grateful neither member of his department was here. He could only imagine how he would never be able to live it down, being seen in this state. No scythe, no glasses, wandering about lost in a forest…

Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

But the forest was alive around him. The wind rustled noisily through the trees, wild pokemon in the distance uttered their cries as they were engaged in battle with each other and another trainer. Perhaps he was approaching this the wrong way. After all, when did he, William T. Spears: Manager of London's Grim Reaper Dispatch Department let anything get the better of him? His hand fumbled with the Pokeball strapped to his side, tossing it into the air and releasing his Pidove.

"Aristotle! Fly ahead and clear a path. While you're there, see if you can find the blasted Aipom that stole my glasses." he ordered. With a coo, the Pidove took wing. William strained to pick out the Pidove's cry. If he kept this up, Aristotle would manage to find him a way out -- and hopefully lead him to that Aipom in question. But a sharp cry caught his attention and out of nowhere, an Aipom carrying a pair of glasses leapt out of the bushes and bounced off his head. Without turning back, it ran off with Aristotle quick on its heels.

William was quick to recover from this and a heartbeat later sent him chasing after the Pokemon with a strained cry of "Don't let that Aipom get away!"

As a heads up, I'm *really* sorry about that last application. I tried writing apps while sick from work and on a Nyquil high, so I've reworked it significantly. Hopefully this one is a heck of a lot more pleasant to read!

Character
Name: Rin Tohsaka
Series: Fate/Zero (novel)
Timeline: Post-series, she'll be coming into the game at the official age of seven which means she'll be bumped up three years according to the rules.
Canon Resource Links: Rin Tohsaka | Fate/Zero

Personality: As the daughter and heir of a prestigious magus family, Rin was taught at a young age to place her studies above everything else. As a child under her father's teachings prior to the events of the Fourth Holy Grail War, Rin is an extraordinarily bright magus. Born when the stars were just right (or so it's said) she was classified as an Average One which only added more of a burden to her shoulders. Instead of being able to specialize in just one school of magecraft, she was blessed with the rare gift of being able to use all five. Despite her rare affinity, Rin's focus on her studies was bolstered by the desire to make her father proud. Even though she studies magecraft every day, she also applies herself to her studies in school and familiarizes herself with various things throughout history as knowledge is power. In turn, this makes her something of an idol due to a combination of her looks and high grades, though she's not the kind to boast over her intelligence in school. More importantly, the Holy Grail War is advantageous if one can guess the true identity of the enemy Servants and so if she studies a number of myths and weapons, she can prepare herself for an assured victory. Because despite the casualties of the last war, Rin's driven to win the next one in her family's name. In fact, that's the only reason she wants to acquire the Grail. She has no wish because as she explains years later to her Servant that if she wants something, she simply strives to achieve it and therefore doesn't need to rely on the "miracle" of magic to grant her an impossible wish. Furthermore, this proves that Rin herself isn't a dreamer and instead is grounded in the reality around her. She minimizes the chance of failure by avoiding paths that don't assure her victory and refusing to take risks, choosing instead to be a quiet girl who keeps her intentions to herself.

Due to this behavior, Rin comes off as a cold girl with standards that intimidate most of her peers into staying away from her. As it goes hand in hand with her idol status, Rin doesn't actively seek out to make too many close friends as that will only further endanger them. After all, she's seen firsthand the casualties of the Holy Grail War after losing not only her sister, but her mother, father, and uncle. She has other living relatives, but they are removed from Rin's life due to a lack of association in the magus family lifestyle so instead she's left in the care of her father's apprentice, Kirei Kotomine. Her relationship with this guardian is strained due to their disagreements prior to the Holy Grail War and because Rin herself feels as if Kirei could have done more to protect her family. Their relationship doesn't improve much in the later years due to him donating most of the Tohsaka's family wealth in order to better Rin's life (a difference in the way he was raised verses the way she was being raised) and being absent most of the time when she could have used him. A primary example of this is immediately after the Fourth Holy Grail War when he leaves with her father's body to London and she's left to take care of her mother in a crippled state on her own. Even though she's lost both of her parents, Rin carries a tremendous amount of guilt within her for the one member of her family that's still alive and living in Fuyuki City herself: her sister. Though she hails from a seemingly ordinary family, there are many laws and restrictions that befall a family with a magus bloodline. The most prominent of these being that there can only be one heir who inherits the crest from the head of the family and since Rin is not only the eldest child, but the most gifted, it's natural that it belongs to her. This means her younger sister, Sakura, has not much of a chance in the world of magi and so her father makes the hard decision of splitting their family up by allowing another family to adopt her even though she's been living with the family for several years. Definitely long enough for Rin to feel as if she's failed her as an older sister when she's taken away. The sisters aren't permitted to acknowledge each other as family, only as classmates, and even then their relationship is strained. Rin's burdened guilt cultivates and motivates her to become a better magus, but she's too complacent to do anything about it. Instead, she keeps these feelings dormant and does what she can to minimize contact with her sister despite having to attend the same school. While initially she didn't understand the implications of losing her sister, it becomes a burdened weight on her shoulders.

Despite keeping people at a distance, she's not outright rude to anyone (unless she trusts them), but just does what she can to minimize lasting friendships. Friendly and personable at school is one thing, but she doesn't invite her friends over or spend time with them after school beyond the mandatory clubs. In the end, she lives a pretty lonely life for most of her childhood and as a result struggles when it comes to communicating with others. It's shown in her later years that she's awkward when it comes to most conversations, struggling between abrasiveness and saying wildly inappropriate things. An earlier example of this is shown when she meets up with her "uncle" Kariya and upon first greeting him, asks for a gift because she's come to expect it of him. Despite her best intentions to keep people at a distance, she still ends up being a good person most of the time. Standing up for kids in her class that are being picked on, she tries to encourage bullies to take her on instead and often gets them to go away. When one of her classmates goes missing during the Holy Grail War, she outright disobeys her parents (but justifies it in her mind by doing what was right to do as a Tohsaka) and returns to Fuyuki City to look for her. One of her more notorious quirks is she'll say one thing, but then do another: the most prominent of these things is saying she won't bother taking a risk for someone, but then goes out of her way to do what's right.

One flaw she has that stands out above the rest is that she's incapable of grasping the full picture. A prominent example in canon is how she views her father: in her mind, he's an idealistic magus who she strives to be like. In reality, he's cold and was willing to abandon his family once he won the Holy Grail War in order to seek out the root of all knowledge. Rin comprehends that he's a magus and can't smile because of it, yet she fails to understand the shallowness behind his actions ("In the eyes of young Rin, her father Tokiomi was a great magus who must be respected and loved, but as for the coldheartedness that accompanied the ideal, that was a negative aspect of his personality that she failed to understand.") As a result, most of her thoughts of him are cherished memories and that's what drives her forward as a magus. If she were to meet him again while she was older, it would be another story entirely.

Ultimately at her core, she's a lazy girl who only puts in as much effort as necessary to look good. Cleaning, cooking, and all chores akin to that nature are done only out of necessity with minimal effort. In fact, she's the kind of girl who would sweep dirt under a rug in hopes no one will ever notice. This noticeably contradicts with her strive to be perfect in all she does, further proving that it's a facade meant to uphold her family's elegance and that in all actuality, she's a flawed girl who still has a lot of growing up to do.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Cleverness: Rin's quick to learn and think through things at an advanced level for her age. While she may get hung up on "street smart" problems, most academic things will be easy enough for her to sort out.
+ Martial Arts: Even though she's only started to learn to physically fight, she can defend herself against people who lack any experience. In fact, she might end up an accidental bully at times. She's no expert however and can easily be taken down by anyone with experience.
+ Self-sufficient: Since she's had to take care of herself for months before arriving to Johto, Rin will be able to adapt to the laws most children her age may struggle with mentally. While she may not enjoy living out in the wilderness, she can cook and wash her own laundry. In fact, her independence may come off as overbearing at times.
- Emotional Baggage: The death of her parents are still fresh on her mind and so she may be prone to fits of tears when it comes to certain situations. Not that she will openly weep in front of others, but there's a possibility that she may struggle in some conversations. Furthermore, she's not the best at handling traumatic events when they're poked at intentionally and may goof up when provoked.
- Magecraft: Since she's without the ability to perform "magic" here in this world, it'll take her some getting used to that. Magi families are encouraged to use magecraft in their every day activities in order to hone their skills so she may experience some trouble when it comes to performing basic tasks (like breaking a glass and being unable to put it back together).
- Maturity: Or a lack thereof. Most of the time she'll try to behave as if she's an adult, but really she's a childish girl who will pick fights she can win intentionally.
- Money Management: Coming from a family with suitable wealth, Rin will struggle to manage her finances and won't be able to show restraint for most purchases.
- Squid Pokemon: No. They will remind her of Caster's fiends and may cause her to panic.
- Technology: Due to the combination of coming from the early 1990's and being a magus, Rin's experience with technology is limiting. She never played video games and her home was full of older electronics if any were present. However, since she's at an age where she's more focused on learning new things, she'll embrace the technology of the world readily than she would if she were older.

--is it working? [ Curious blue eyes fill the screen entirely as a girl's voice can be heard albeit muffled by her fingers moving over the holes that make up the microphone. ] That lady said to use this to check out my PokémOH!

[ Her quick discovery on it's working condition becomes apparent as she holds it out with both of her arms. She's dressed for winter surprisingly in a thick red coat and her hair pulled up into twin red bows. The weather doesn't seem to phase her too much, nor does the strange looking cat-like creature hunched beside her. ]

Listen up. My name is Rin Tohsaka and I'm going to be your future champion, so you should learn to get in good with me while I'm on my journey because when I'm big and important, I might not have time to get to know everyone. [ What a bold strategy: announce her greatness and hope people will suck up to her while her ambitions are strong. ] With that out of the way, I need help. This PokeGear is essential to every trainer and I'm not familiar with it.

So I need a teacher. Not just any average trainer, but someone who really knows how to work this. The best of the best for the best. Got that? [ All with a sweet smile. ] My memory is the best and when I'm at the top as the Pokemon Champion, I'll remember this favor on my very first day... who knows how rich I'll be then, but I'm betting I can return the gesture somehow.

Third Person Sample: [ PROSE ]

Strange as the concept for a 'Foster Home' for Pokemon left behind by trainers who took their leave of this world was, Rin found herself oddly comforted by the fact that if she were to suddenly return (which she will), that her Sableye could be provided for. Not that she thought he'd need the care as he took after her in cleverness, but just in case he needed a bit of time to recover from the loss...

A girl her age shouldn't have to concern herself with those kind of thoughts, but the past half year of her life had been an onslaught of losses. Naturally the responsibility of her Pokemon came first in her mind over the pain of returning to a lonely city. A world void of her father couldn't really be called a world to her much anymore, not when she had discovered the secret behind the world of Pokemon.

Really, it had only been a matter of time before Rin Tohsaka would discover what many of the other children from Fuyuki City had learned before her. Any person from any given time period could arrive in this realm. While some from her future had been here long enough to make a name for themselves among the other prisoners, some had brief appearances. The "Original Trainer" names that popped up along her PokeGear as she studied each of the abandoned Pokemon tore at her heart in ways she refused to let show. Her Sableye who as mentioned before was clever worlds above the rest would settle in beside her and stare towards the screen with lit up eyes. He might not understand the pain of his trainer, but he'd try to alleviate her concerns by swatting at the device in order to gain her attention.

"Kariya Matou... Tokiomi Tohsaka..." The girl murmured under her breath towards the Pokemon as if he could understand. "They left behind some Pokemon... but we're not strong enough yet to adopt them."

Understandably, the place had a rule that she would have to a team equal or stronger than the Pokemon she wished to adopt. A fair rule she couldn't contest no matter what. Even if the employee on duty could be swayed easily by the tears of a seven year old girl (or was she ten years of age now?), it wouldn't be the right thing to do. The heir of the Tohsaka family would have to hold her head up high and act only in the most elegant of ways. That would mean having to come back to this city when her Sableye had grown in strength and only then could she stuff the holes left in her heart with the Pokemon of men long gone from her life.

Character
Name: Kirikou "Kilik" Rung
Series: Soul Eater
Timeline: End of canon
Canon Resource Links: Kirikou Rung

Personality: As one of the minor characters, Kirikou doesn't get as much backstory or development as some of the main cast. This is unfortunate, since as a character he is quite fascinating! He's one of the top three strongest meisters in the Academy, a teenager who is already seemingly responsible for two small children, and one of the only characters in the series who can establish a soul resonance connection with FOUR different demon weapons at the same time! (One of the main characters, Death the Kid, is the son of a god basically and even he can only manage two.) With what we've seen in canon, we can establish that Kirikou has the follow traits: a strong sense of loyalty, a fierce temper that comes with it, the ability to keep his calm in combat situations, a maturity not usually seen in teenagers that comes with raising children, and a sense of immaturity that somehow still manages to shine through.

He's still a teenager, after all.

Like many characters in the Soul Eater canon, Kirikou can be startlingly mature when the situation calls for it. This is what happens when you're raised as basically child soldiers. Combat scenes and stuff that would make normal people flinch won't reach him as hard. He probably won't even think it's that strange that it's normal to make small animals (which sometimes grow into giant animals) fight. As a 13-15 year old who has been taking care of two young children, it stands to reason that he's also a good nurturing figure and fairly responsible even moreso than some Academy students already are. Of course, he's far from serious all the time. In canon, he's gotten into fights with Black Star over a chocolate bar (while they were in the middle of a warzone although not yet involved) and has teased his friends. He's also gotten excited in regards to his friends, cheering on Ox to 'get the girl' and rescue her. It seems he's just as likely to get into shenanigans as well, although not as much as when he was thirteen.

Loyalty is a strong theme in Soul Eater, and Kirikou isn't exempt from having such a trait. When they finally get attacked in the warzone mentioned earlier, Kirikou shows a desire not to leave his teammates Kim and Ox behind on their own and works with them to beat the enemy force. He also shows his maturity in giving up the chocolate bar to Black Star so he can "keep up his strength". That same intense loyalty is also apparent when Kim is forced to run away from the Academy. He immediately gets enraged that she was chased away and still believes that she is on their side. This scene and those after it also display his temper, however. He's immediately enraged that his friend Ox is not as angry as he is, and later shows rage that they have to team up with the very person who outed Kim in the first place. It's only because of his loyalty to his friends (Ox showing confidence and trust in him) that has him go along with it in the first place.

In short, Kirikou is quite an extraordinary young man who's still finding the perfect balance of maturity and childishness, and with a deep intense caring for those who have earned his friendship.

Strengths/Weaknesses: As someone from a world where children are taught to be excellent in combat from an alarmingly young age, Kirikou is pretty used to it already. While it's not shown all the time in canon, he's shown some inclinations of being decently intelligent in regards to tactics. He starts to go through all the different moves he can make when faced with someone who can calculate his every move (although that didn't last long since overload on his enemy's part) and has easily switched from guns to giant fists when partnered with four weapons at a time. This means that when he comes to Johto, he'll both adapt pretty quickly to its Pokemon battle centered culture and he'll also be pretty good when it comes to figuring out battle tactics. (Type advantages, status effects, etc.)

As something of a father/big brother figure to a pair of children (who also function as giant beat down fists) back in his world already, Kirikou is actually a pretty caring and loyal individual to begin with. Any Pokemon that end up with him will be treated like children and partners both, a strange combination but one that Kirikou is used to. He'll also become extremely loyal to his team, no matter how annoying they are. This counts for traveling partners, too.

The problem with having such a strong tendency to loyalty also means he's strongly affected when anything happens to them, he'll end up affected just as strongly. A lot of the times, it'll be a temper- mess with his friends or his team and you've got a fist fight on your hands. He can also become disturbed, however, especially if his Pokemon are. (A canon example would be when Harvar ruthlessly but efficiently destroyed a cute toy bunny that had been distracting Fire and Thunder. The two children were terrified of the act, and it was clear by Kirikou's expression that he was disconcerted at the least as well.)

While it's not a super obvious trait, Kirikou can also be a bit closeminded at times. When facing an opponent who kept suddenly using a sumo slap in the middle of their fight, Kirikou commented on how useless it was. A reasonable enough assumption... but he then also went to comment on how it was practiced by 'sweaty fat pigs'. Needless to say, if Kirikou doesn't understand it and it gives off a 'useless' impression to him, he'll dismiss it and maybe even show a bit of disdain. He might not be able to get into Breeding, for example, and some aspects of other characters' cultures might not interest him or even annoy him. Hopefully no fights will start out...

Although if any do, Kirikou is more than prepared. As a student of the Academy, he's an excellent fighter with his fists. And guns as well, but those are obviously not going to account for in a place like Johto.

You know what really makes it a drag traveling around all the time? This music could kill me with how boring it is.

[Yep, that's the complaint of the day. Not the "I've been kidnapped from my home and most of my loved ones". Not the "Team Rocket is stealing my Pokemon, what is Officer Jenny doing". Not even "Dude, where's my cool shiny powers". Clearly the music is the important thing here.]

There's no energy to it, no beat to move to. It's just the same boring stuff. At least it's a little better when I'm battling... [Which is the reason why he's been getting into so many battles. Maybe.]

What sort of music have you guys listened to back home? And, be honest with me, does it get any sort of better here?

Third Person Sample:
It feels weird to leave all the fighting to someone else.

As long as he can remember, Kirikou has always been the one to go charging in so that his teammates could stick behind. Ox was never support, but he had always done best when he was outside with plenty of room to use his lightning. The same could be said for Kim. But him? Him and Fire and Thunder could more than happily make use of all the room the outsides gave them. Yet when it came down to it, they were close combat fighters and did things literally hand to hand. It was what they were best at. So whenever he sees an opponent, it's always his first thought. It's him that should be getting right in there. It's him that should be cleaning up.

So yeah, it feels pretty weird to be taking a back seat and just yelling out commands and crap. What if he gets rusty? Losing your touch is something no good meister wants, and Kirikou is no different.

So every morning, he wakes up his Sawk with a grin and a shoulder punch. Best Pokemon he could have got here in Johto- or one of two anyway. It's a spar like every day, something to keep them on their toes. It helps his Sawk gets stronger, and it helps Kirikou, too. Even if he has to rely on his Pokemon in this place, he wants them to be able to rely on him, too. Not just for orders in a Pokemon battles, either. If they watch his back, then he'll watch his. That's just how it works.

And he can't be weak for that.

So he practices every day, sometimes with Throh, sometimes with Sawk, or both of them together. Sometimes his Doduo even gets involved. Just to spice things up. At the end of every morning, none of them are unsatisfied.

Cynthia | Fire Emblem Awakening | Unreserved | 2/2

[personal profile] ajustcaws 2014-03-15 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality: There are some heroes that go down in history as the stuff of legends. They refuse to back down from any challenge, are always prepared to help the weak, and pursue the forces of evil with all the strength they can muster. There are songs and sagas dedicated to their names, and even their weapons have wide renown. Cynthia, having grown up on tales of her mother and her companions' (occasionally exaggerated) deeds, has a drive and enthusiasm for becoming a hero that's practically unmatched.

...Unfortunately, she's a little less El Cid and a little more Don Quixote. But she tries. Oh my god, does she try.

One of the major factors hampering Cynthia as being seen as one of the more dignified sorts of heroes is the fact that she's... honestly not the brightest bulb in the box. She tends to charge into situations without thinking... well, that wouldn't be entirely correct. She thinks a lot before charging into situations, but it's usually about what cool move she'll execute or what heroic phrase she'll yell when she makes her entrance rather than anything resembling strategy. Also, both as part of taking her primary inspiration from heroic tales and coming from a future where all her enemies are mindless zombies, she's a bit naive about how living, breathing people tend to act in battle. This leaves her open to being easily fooled by dirty tricks, and also makes her fairly gullible. She's not necessarily the sort to go tilting at windmills unprovoked, but if you can accomplish the fairly easy task of convincing her that those windmills are some evildoer's base then by Naga will she try.

...and possibly trip on her way there if she's on foot, because one of the major qualities she inherited from her mother was her klutziness. She doesn't spend quite as much time tripping over her Pegasus Knight boots as her mother did, but it's still hampered a dramatic entrance or two in her time.

All of that may make her sound a bit... difficult to get along with, and to some degree, that's true. Her bullheadedness makes her react poorly to criticism of the whole hero thing, and she can seem a bit egocentric, self-glorifying, and... well... self-absorbed. That's... partially right, though it can't be said that she doesn't actually care about other people. In fact the worst that could be said about her in relation to her intentions towards others is that she has a bit of a mischievous streak and enjoys pulling pranks (but only on the deserving)! Outside of that, she does do her best to live up to the whole fighting for Justice and protecting the weak thing, and when she notices someone having a problem, she'll do her best to help people out with it.

There are two problems with that, unfortunately. The first is that, between her tendency not to spend too much time thinking about things that aren't heroism and just being generally a bit unobservant overall, she can be a bit oblivious to someone's problems if they're not told to her explicitly. She even fails to notice that she's been failing to care properly for her pegasus due to being so wrapped up in her dreams and ambitions, despite the pegasus being both her trusty mount and one of the few mementos she has of her mother, and only really notices it when Sumia advises her to slow down and think about things.

The other problem is that... well... she doesn't always get the idea that her ways of solving problems or approaching things isn't everyone's way of solving problems --- or even just approaching friendships, in more casual circumstances. While her heart's generally in the right place and she doesn't mean to make fun of people, her tendency to cast herself in the role as the protagonist of her own personal story can make her seem a bit callous or like she's making fun of the other party when she's just trying to be friendly. If she casts someone as her mount or the villain in her current LARP storyline, she's not trying to humiliate them, it's just... how she operates. And she doesn't quite understand that she's doing something that might humiliate the other person, because hey, the villain is a great role!

With that said, when she does bother to slow down to think things through, she can prove that she's not totally oblivious to everything that goes on around her. For example, she does seem mildly self-conscious about how other people view the hero thing at some points (though not enough to actually stop it). Even more surprisingly, she's fully aware that she's from a different timeline than the one that Fire Emblem: Awakening's story follows, so her father and mother from that timeline aren't really her parents but the parents of a different version of her. She suggests that she's already accepted this fact even before traveling to the past, and wants to be able to spend as much time with her family as possible before their Cynthia is born.

Her ability to accept this leads to one of her strongest qualities: even in the face of despair, she continues to remain cheerful and optimistic. She is far more resilient than one would think, and her strength of will keeps her going even when most people would lose hope and give up. Even if her heroic adventures ultimately turn out to be goofy misadventures more often than not, her determination, resilience, and perseverance are just about the stuff of legend.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Positive Thinking: It is nearly impossible to get Cynthia down in a serious way, short of someone dying or ending up injured on her behalf. Given the sort of situation she comes from, this is quite an accomplishment. She's extremely genuine about the whole thing, too... she's not faking a cheerful disposition to mask her insecurities or anything like that. People she knows can find this a bit difficult to handle, but she can also be an inspiration to others.
+ Resilience: Tying into the above, but in a different sense: even though she may seem sort of shallow and naive, when she slows down to think things through, she's very capable of accepting harsh truths and difficult situations when she needs to buckle down and get things done, and is genuinely devoted to her ideals.
+ Athletic: While her combat abilities are a bit limited without lances and flying horses, she's strong, fast, and capable of taking a hit or two.
+ Animal Aptitude: Both Cynthia's parents are known for having strong bonds with animals, and Cynthia certainly takes after them both. She's not quite as talented as either of them yet due to her tendency to act before she thinks and get caught up in her flights of fancy, unfortunately, but she's experienced at working with pegasus and horses and dealing with animals in battle.
+/- Determination: As implied before, Cynthia is the sort who will never give up. On the one hand, this makes her fairly dependable in that regard... but, on the other hand, she won't give up even when it might be a better idea to do so.
+/- Guileless: Cynthia wears her heart on her sleeve, and this can make her trustworthy, in a weird way --- she probably wouldn't lie even if she could. However, she's a terrible actor and should not be trusted with anything requiring stealth or trickery.
+/- Takes Failure Hard: Whenever Cynthia realizes that she's done something that could have hurt a lot of other people (or even just gets kind of self-conscious about her own quirks, which she does do once in a blue moon), she can be in a funk in it for days. This may be a bit odd to frame as halfway positive, but these are the times when she's most receptive to good advice --- and because she genuinely does want to improve, she'll do her best to put that advice into action and improve herself.
- Impulsive: Cynthia is the sort to act before she thinks, which very often gets her (and others) into dangerous situations.... or just kind of embarrassing ones. She's also prone to go chasing some wild fancy on a whim, which can make her seem flighty. Part of it comes from what her conception of what a hero is --- she believes that it's way cooler to go charging in alone, but it's something she'll do even when part of a team.
- Naive/Gullible: Cynthia has not actually had to face human opponents before, so she thinks that the world will be divided into comically obvious evildoers and chivalrous opponents who will fight honorably at all times. This makes it extremely easy to pull a fast one on her if she's facing someone who fights dirty... and it also makes it easy for less than scrupulous types to trick her into working for them. Notably, her very first appearance involves her working for bandits who have convinced her that they're the main party.
- Single-Minded: Cynthia's desire to be a cool hero with all the best catchphrases and all the sweetest moves is one of her biggest driving forces, and she can get so wrapped up around it that she fails to realize that she's missing important details or neglecting the needs of others. She also fails to realize that not everyone shares her interests, so her attempts at friendship can come off as a bit offputting or overbearing.
- Childish: Effectively encompasses her naivete and her singlemindedness, but she really is kind of a huge kid... and despite the fact that she does take her ideals and dreams completely seriously, sometimes she can be a bit bad at realizing when she should buckle down and focus. She also is a bit self-absorbed, wanting to be in the spotlight and the hero that saves everyone... but that's not something that is totally immutable, because it's at least partially an unconscious thing.
- Klutz: ...okay, so it might be her boots that she keeps tripping over, but she probably just inherited the ability to trip over thin air from her mother.
- Medieval...???: ...Fire Emblem: Awakening's setting is kind of anachronistic in terms of speech patterns and social mores, but modern conveniences are going to take Cynthia a while to get used to, especially with her... unique approach to things.

First Person Sample: [Throughout the day, people may have noticed something kind of weird going on with the PokeConnect --- weird, short video posts of nothing in particular, very short voice posts with some incomprehensible parts of words, and occasional keysmashes. Then, it finally seems like the Gear's owner has figured things out, since the face of a white-haired teenage girl comes into frame... though she's looking off to the side, as though some poor sap has explained to her how this whole deal works.]

So, am I doing this right? Can everyone see this?

[The offscreen individual's response is inaudible. However, it was apparently affirmative, because the girl turns back to the screen, a look of wonder on her face.]

Woah...

[Then her face breaks into a huge grin, and she shakily adjusts the Gear so that she, a timid-looking Blitzle, and a mildly flabbergasted looking Murkrow are...

... well, they're kind of in the frame?

They're occasionally in the frame.

Sometimes.]

Greetings, citizens, and beware, evildoers! I hope you can all see me all right, because the Great Hero Cynthia and her faithful companions, Thunderhoof and Sablefeather, have arrived in Johto!

[Her expression falters a bit, and the camera focuses back on her.]

Well, actually, I'm supposed to be off saving some other world... but I ended up here, instead. Does anyone know what's up with that? I've been asking around, and no one seems to know. I mean, if I'm here, then I bet this world does need saving, because psssh, why else would Naga have sent me here?

But, uh, I kind of need to save my past, so...

[...a realization seems to strike her.]

Oooh, wait! This has to be some kind of test run! All right, everyone!

[She... does something that shakes the camera and tries to look really dramatic and inspiring, but right now, she's probably just inspiring motion sickness...]

If you need a hero for anything, then I'm your girl! Just send me a messenger, or --- oh, wait! I guess you don't have to because you can just use this thing! Well, I can tackle anything you need me to!

[She grins.

...the camera lingers a bit.

The Blitzle, apparently named Thunderhoof, attempts to hide behind Sablefeather, who just looks up at her in exasperation.

... Cynthia looks to the side.]

...uh, how do you end this...?

Third Person Sample: Okay, so, this absolutely wasn't the sort of world Cynthia should have ended up in, since it wasn't basically hers except in the past before everything had been overtaken by Risen and gotten kind of awful and her parents had died. But, Cynthia did have to admit that it was a pretty great world! Like, right off the bat, she had been made part of a team that liberated abused Pokemon from bad trainers, and how great was that? That was grade A hero material, right there!

There was no way this could possibly go wrong, or that they were at all shady! Nope, none whatsoever!

She... had to admit, there were some things she definitely missed, though, especially her pegasus. She had been a friend who stuck with Cynthia through thick and thin, a stalwart ally in battle, one of the few mementos she had of her dead mother...

...and, most importantly, they had worked out plenty of cool poses that they could do together in battles! That was clearly the greatest tragedy here.

Things weren't all bad, though, because she did have two animal companions right now! Well, Pokemon companions. ...were Pokemon animals? Did they count...?

Well, whatever! They didn't know cool flourishes for their moves and striking poses... yet. But, that wasn't a problem that Cynthia couldn't fix. After all, even her pegasus hadn't known how to do all kinds of heroic stuff when she first started riding her into battle.

So, she'd just have to take a brief break from the hero role and become the greatest coach Johto had ever seen! She had moved just a little bit into a secluded area out of town, because she knew her Pokemon were a tiny bit self-conscious.

So, now, she stood before Thunderhoof and Sablefeather, hands on her hips. ...honestly, even she kind of had to admit that they didn't look... the most enthusiastic. Thunderhoof just kind of looked like she wanted to run away, while Sablefeather looked like he was going to die of embarrassment any minute now.

...oh well! She just had to get that motivation going, that was all!

"All right, champs, listen up!" she said, planting her feet. "I think you both have the makings of some great sidekicks, but your intros into battles could use a little more... oomph. And you're really going to have to work on the visual aspect, since I don't think neighs and caws are going to strike fear into the hearts of many evildoers! So, we're going to work on some dramatic entrances!"

She punched her fist into her palm for emphasis.

"All right, so, first off --- show me your coolest pose from a standing position! Give me some real derring-do!"

Thunderhoof looked to the left and right for possible avenues of escape.

Sablefeather, on the other hand, merely looked like he was desperately hoping he would melt into the ground.

"...uh, guys? A little enthusiasm here...?"

Well, a hero's journey was always long and difficult, she had to admit. But... it looked like it was going to be even longer than usual...

Series: Fullmetal Alchemist (2003 anime)
Timeline: Just before Archer is fit with the automail, after the array in Liore has gone off.
Canon Resource Links: FMA Wiki. All of the information here applies - though it is worth mentioning that in the first anime the city is named "Liore" instead of "Reole." There are several differences between the first anime and the manga/Brotherhood when it comes to the names of places and people - I will be using the dub of the first anime for these. Again, Archer is taken before the automail is attached, meaning that he is actually mentally stable (to some extent).

Re: Frank Archer | Fullmetal Alchemist | Reapp

[personal profile] sadisticwarfare 2014-03-15 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality: Archer's personality depends on who you are, or rather, if you're in a position of power or not. To his superiors he's a charming, hard-working officer with a more reserved look on government and society at large. To anyone he doesn't consider useful, he's a complete jerk. The two sides don't seem to properly fit together until one realizes that Archer is a cunning manipulator. His smarts lead him to believe he's superior to everyone, including those he's quite charming toward. Even if he must push his ego aside, it's only for a limited time. Archer doesn't seem to hold a high level of respect for the Fuhrer (due to the fact that he knows the Fuhrer is a Homunculus; something that immediately gives him an edge over the Fuhrer), and is often contrary to the point of defiance in discussion with him. He shows less and less respect toward his superior officers as the series goes on.

War is Archer's favorite thing. His determination to start a war in Liore is only further proof of this. While war has strengthened his nation in the past, Archer does not seek to start a war for that prospect. He loves strategy and planning, but especially loves the thrill of a fight. Any excuse to kill without reprecussions is one he is willing to take. He passes it off as wanting to be a "war hero" like Mustang, but in reality he simply "likes war," according to one of the soldiers who worked under him. This seems to be common knowledge within the military, but Archer hasn't actually done anything that could be considered illegal. Archer knows his views aren't common and are definitely not normal; he's very careful not to say anything that could get him thrown in prison. Kimbley is the only person he's met who shares any of his beliefs, and he was in prison for ten years for killing his superior officers during the Ishbal War. He obviously doesn't want to end up like Kimbley, and spends the majority of his time attempting to appear normal. While he can pass for normal, he does give off an inherently creepy vibe. He doesn't seem to notice this.

Archer has a severe lack of morals in most areas of life. Society's "morals" concerning life and war scarcely affect him. He's willing to use others as tools to achieve his own ends. He tends to come off as inhumane and cruel when discussing those morals, but it's not entirely without benefit. He can actually argue that without morals to "get in his way" he's not forced to think about "what's right." This makes him (in his opinion) the perfect soldier. His lack of morals make him dangerous, but he would be right at home on the battlefield. Unfortunately (in his opinion), he's never seen battle.

Archer is easily angered and frustrated, but most other emotions are hidden under an outer layer of cool detachment. While he is usually level-headed and takes the time to think his actions through, when he's angry Archer doesn't stop to think. Archer doesn't like showing any weakness whatsoever, and he considers most emotion to be a weakness which can be used against him. Likewise he considers friends to be similar and keeps very few. Allies, on the other hand, are always useful (at least until he decides they aren't, in which case friendy fire is always a suitable option). His cruel ruthlessness both on and off the battlefield are terrifying, leading many to whisper behind his back that he's not only a warmonger but a sadistic, inhumane monster as well. As long as they can't prove it, Archer considers himself safe. He finds it rather ironic that they call him a monster while working for one.

Those that work under him would indeed describe Archer as a monster. He's ruthless when it comes to his officers and works them to the bone. Perfection is expected and even a small mistake (be it grammatical or a numerical error, or perhaps even spelling when Archer's really in a foul mood) can result in severe punishment. His own paperwork is known for being error-free, and he expects the same of his subordinates (even though he is ultimately sure that they are incapable of it). It's more of an ego-booster than anything else (not that he needs one).

Due to having previously been in Route, Archer's personality has altered some. He's still just as devious and clever as always, but he's a bit more calm than he was when he first arrived. He's formed a very strong bond with Kimblee which has helped him adapt to life in Johto much easier than he would have on his own. That friendship with Kimblee was a major turning point for him - it was proof that his friendship with Kimbley wasn't a fluke and that he is capable of making other friends and forming lasting relationships that are admittedly kind of creepy. Archer has mellowed out a lot due to being in Route instead of the war-driven society in Amestris, though he still seeks to make his mark on the world and have everyone recognize him... through taking over the entire region. Yes, he still wants that.

Strengths/Weaknesses: ✔ Archer is a very skilled orator. He's quite good at talking - be it convincing others, speaking to large groups, or lying through his teeth. He can hide (most) emotions behind an eloquent speech. He is usually very blunt and to the point though, which can make him seem rude or insensitive. He is.
✔ Archer is smart - he's well educated and clever. His "street smarts" are severely lacking though. There are very few situations that Archer cannot get himself out of. He confronts the Fuhrer about Laboratory Five without showing any sort of fear about possible repercussions (at that time, it's heavily implied he knows that Fuhrer Bradley is not human). While this may make him seem reckless or even fearless, it's really more of a matter of knowing how to get what he wants (in this case, Kimbley and Tucker's reinstatement into the military). What he lacks in experience he makes up for in knowledge. He's quick to learn and even quicker to try and find answers to any questions he has. Archer can't stand not knowing what's going on around him. Hughes, Archer's former superior officer, was killed because he discovered what was going on within the military. Archer figures out what's going on not long after Hughes's death; he is one of the few who does know what is going on within the military.
✔ Though he isn't well-known for it, Archer is good with firearms. He tends not to think before pulling his gun though (evidently Edward Elric's short rants are just enough to get him ready to shoot - even if Edward is a child, not that he cares much about that). Of course, that doesn't really serve any purpose in Johto, since he can't get his hands on a gun.
✔ When it comes to sucking up, Archer can't be beat. Well, okay, he can, since his huge ego can only take a certain amount of debasing. Archer will form "friendships" with anyone he deems capable of helping him achieve his goals. He won't hesitate to toss his friends under the bus should it aid him though. That might be literal. It's difficult to tell with him.
✘ Friendship has always been a problem for Archer. He doesn't have any close friends - nor does he need them - but there are times when having supporters would be useful. He tends to use those he does consider "friends" and is quick to rid himself of them. The closest person to him would be Kimbley, and unfortunately he got himself killed. Archer is a skilled leader and can actually get along well enough with those to work under him - several of his soldiers actively worry about him when the array goes off in Liore (not that he was capable of noticing this). Archer has difficulties trusting anyone, which is another reason why he doesn't make fiends.
✘ Archer is typically good at reigning in his emotions - save anger and frustration. He's quick to get pissed off, and even quicker to lash out (usually verbally, but if he's pissed enough he will lash out physically). He can go from perfectly calm to furious in a matter of seconds if the right buttons are pushed. He doesn't deal well with any emotions that aren't smug satisfaction. He's not very good at identifying his emotions as what they are and tends to read too deeply into them. This usually results in anger. ...Though most of his emotions circle back around to anger at some point anyway.
✘ A lack of "special" abilities hinders Archer in his homeworld. He's incapable of alchemy. Had he been capable of using the science he would have used it to achieve a higher ranking in the military early on. Instead he had to work his way up as a pencil-pusher. Archer thinks quite highly of himself, but his inability to use alchemy is the one thing that he really hates. He tends to be jealous of everyone who does have any "special" abilities, and that jealousy tends to turn into hatred. Possibly the only exception to this is Kimbley, who had the same twisted world view as Archer. That, and Kimbley can make anything explode.
✘ Archer tends to come off as cold and aloof. It isn't far from the truth. He doesn't interact with anyone he doesn't think he can use. This is especially detrimental within this world, as Archer doesn't know anything about this world or how it works. It also doesn't help that he dislikes his Team Rocket superiors. He refuses to be considered a "Grunt" due to the fact that he worked his way up from such a position back in Amestris. The fact that his "boss" has the name Archer is an irony that only serves to infuriate him further.
✘ He's very fickle. Archer will go after whatever he believes will aid him most in the long run. His goal is to become Fuhrer of Amestris - or at least go down in history as a war hero. Either way, he changes his mind repeatedly. Within the course of an episode he changes his mind four times (original goal was to find the Elric brothers and question them about the events at Laboratory Five. Then he found a chimera and wanted to capture it. Then he found a Homunculus child capable of using alchemy and wanted to capture him instead. Then when everything starts going wrong he decides to recruit Kimbley to work for him within the military.) Even when he gets what he wants, he's quick to change his mind about it and find something else worth pursuing.
✘ When it comes to fears, there really isn't much that holds Archer back. While he dislikes being seen as useless or weak, neither of these qualify as "fears." About the only thing Archer genuinely fears is dying before he's made a name for himself. Death itself doesn't scare him (though he isn't fond of physical pain of any sort), it's just the idea that he won't be remembered for anything and will have lived a "pointless" life.

First Person Sample: What happened.

[That's said with the air of someone who is incredibly furious but is trying to hide it. The post is set to audio so Archer's face isn't visible, but it's very obvious that he's pissed.]

I was under the impression that we fell into a coma for a week when we returned home. That isn't what happened to me. I disappeared from Johto entirely, apparently. Normally I wouldn't be this upset about this, but I've lost all of my Pokémon. All of them. Every. Single. Last. One.

[He grits the words out from between clenched teeth. To make matters even worse, he's starting with another Zubat! Ugh, at least this one isn't microchipped so he can probably use it without it turning on him...]

If anyone has my Pokémon, I would like them back immediately. I'm particularly interested in discovering what became of Alekhine.

[There's a pause. Archer counts backwards from ten to make sure he doesn't say anything that could out him as a member of Team Rocket. He wants to ask about his status within the organization, but for the time being he'll remain quiet.]

...Thank you for your time.

Third Person Sample: The room is far too familiar. He wonders absently why he's in the base instead of in the house in Mahogany Town, but then it hits him. He shouldn't be here. He wasn't here. He was back home, in Amestris.

And he had lived through the array that went off in Liore. He had lived through getting his body nearly sliced in half. He had lived despite losing a lot of blood, his arm, his leg, and his eye.

Immediately he looked at his hands. His left arm was there. He flexed his fingers experimentally, surprised that his arm responded so well. His left leg was there too, and like his arm, it responded properly. He pushed himself up from the bed and approached the mirror, staring at his reflection silently. He looked exactly the same as he had the last time he was here, except his hair was perhaps a bit shorter.

"What the hell happened?"

He turned to look around the room, hoping for some clue as to why he was here. Had he passed out and someone had moved him? Why here though? A set of red-and-white balls on the table caught his eye, along with a Team Rocket uniform and a note placed neatly on top. He felt his heart sink.

"No. No, it's not possible. This can't be." He reached for the note, skimmed it quickly and balled it up. "This shouldn't be happening! I was a Beta in this organization! A Beta! Why the hell am I starting over again!? What the hell happened!?"

But he already knew what had happened. He'd returned home. He'd gone back to Amestris and left everything in this world behind. Immediately he reached into his pocket for the pocketwatch he had received during Christmas, but of course it was gone. He supposed he was lucky enough to have his uniform, since he didn't remember wearing it when he woke up the few times after that array hit. Archer subconsciously flexed his fingers again. It was good to have his dominant arm back.

"I'll just have to get in contact with the others. Cobra should still be here and Kimblee..."

Would Kimblee still be here? Of course. Of course he would be. If Kimblee went home, that would mean...

No. He refused to entertain the idea. Archer took the PokéGear and dialed the number he remembered so clearly. "What the hell do you mean 'Gear I.D. not found'!?" Archer demanded, but as expected, the 'Gear didn't answer him. Kimblee was no longer in Johto.

He refused to allow himself a moment to think about this because he knew he would curl up and refuse to do anything else for the rest of the day. He needed to get in contact with Cobra and see if he had any of Archer's Pokémon. "Commander, this is Colonel Archer. I've returned to Johto. We will continue our plans as soon as possible."

Character
Name: Kairi
Series: Kingdom Hearts
Timeline: Kingdom Hearts 1, as she begins to flee from Hollow Bastion with Donald and Goofy.
Canon Resource Links: Kairi at the Kingdom Hearts Wiki

Personality: Kairi is a young girl trapped by a destiny she did not ask for. She is a Princess of Heart, one possessing a heart untouched by darkness, and the key to opening Kingdom Hearts. Because of who she is, she has been pursued relentlessly almost her entire life, resulting in the loss of both her birth and adoptive homes, as well as a considerable chunk of her memory. She has little understanding of who she is, or what she is meant to do, but she knows that if she is captured, it could mean the end of all worlds. Because of this, Kairi makes snap-judgments of everyone she meets. If she believes you to be dangerous or cruel, she will become distant and avoiding. She also believes herself to be dangerous. By simply existing, she has caused the destruction of two worlds, both containing people who loved and cared for her dearly, and caused her two dearest friends to be lost to darkness trying to save her. She worries that anyone associating with her is putting themselves at great risk. She feels the world would be a safer place if she just disappeared, but she can’t stand the thought of being alone. She thrives on her social nature, and being with others gives her confidence and strength. Her memory is also an issue. There is so much she wants to remember; about her home, her family, who she is. Her memories of Hollow Bastion are few and far-between. The memories she does have, however, are very personal, and kept hidden. The only person to learn of these memories is Sora, and only after he delves deep into Kairi’s heart.

Growing up, her two best friends were very protective. While she didn’t mind at first, it eventually culminated in a “can too” personality. Any statement of “you can’t” or “you shouldn’t” is only seen as a challenge. This is especially true of statements relating to her age, her ability, or her gender. The last thing she ever wants to be is a damsel in distress, and treating her like one is an easy way to annoy her. Thinking this way has made her stubborn and brash. If someone else can do something, then she can do it too, whether that be building, or cooking, or fighting. This is dangerous, as she can be goaded into doing something dangerous; climbing too high, lifting too much weight, fighting someone more powerful. If Kairi sets her sights on something, she is going to try and do it, nay-sayers be damned. She also values the power of a promise. If she says she is going to do something, she will. If you say you’re going to do something, you better do it. Breaking a promise is tantamount to betrayal, because making a promise is placing faith on the strength of your friendship. When the defeat of Ansem closes the worlds from one another, Kairi promises to wait for Riku and Sora to return; a promise she keeps for well over a year, before her concern overtakes her and she begins her search.

Though she can be easily annoyed, that’s not to say she isn’t kind. If there is anything in this world Kairi loves, its people. She wants nothing more than to spend every moment with her friends—and making friends is what she does best. A social butterfly, Kairi wants to make friends with everyone she meets. She’s upbeat and optimistic, as well as generous. She would give the shirt off her back if it meant helping a friend in need. Her bright, sunny personality draws anyone around her. Her optimism is impressive. Perhaps due in part to her affiliation with light, Kairi deeply believes that no matter how bad things may be now, that things will get better. It might require hard work and sacrifice, but it will come.

This is not to say she is without fear, however. She is anxious about the unknown, and worried about the safety of those important to her. She also fears for her own ability to step up when the time calls for it. She worries that she won’t be strong enough when she needs to be, and that terrible things will come from it. Still, she uses the strength of her friends as a surrogate for her own, and with the confidence gained from that, she can stand tall against odds far against her. This includes a request to help in the fight against Ansem, and attempting to fight off a kidnapping attempt by Axel in the second game. She also has a marked level of maturity for her age. She is keen in observation, and is the first in her friends to recognize when something is a bad idea. When building the raft to leave the Destiny Islands, Kairi is the only one to bring up the potential dangers of their journey. While Riku and Sora were excited about the adventure, Kairi was more concerned with adequate food storage, and the strength and integrity of their vessel. She recognizes the chances of reaching another world, if it is even possible with their plan, are slim. Still, she never doubted her friends for a second. If they said it was possible, then maybe it was.

Kairi is intensely dedicated to her friends. If you are kindhearted, you will gain an ally unlike any other. Her two closest friends, Riku and Sora, mean the world to her, and, outside of her adoptive parents, are the closest thing to a family she has. They have grown up together since they were young children, and are among the very first memories Kairi has of Destiny Islands. Though she is one of the younger members of the group, her role in their friendship is almost motherly at times. She is the anchor that keeps them weighted into reality, and often scolds them when they do something wrong. She is also protective of them. She would be quick to come to their aid, were they hurt or in danger. When Sora was reduced to a defenseless Heartless, Kairi shielded him from attacks using her own body.

As young as she is, Kairi is not without a mischievous streak. She loves jokes, which often come in the form of pranks she pulls on her friends. Her pranks are harmless, however, and only target those who can take a joke. The last thing she would want to do is harm or offend someone. It’s only a little fun, right? She also enjoys drawing, and has quite an artistic streak. There is a small cave on their home island filled with drawings done by Kairi and her friends. She also has a habit of stargazing, and can often be found staring up at the night sky, wondering (sometimes audibly) about what other worlds are like. She also has a strong affinity for water, having grown up near the ocean. She’s as comfortable swimming as she is walking, and loves the feeling of sand between her toes. The warmth of the sun and the smell of sea salt in the air make her nostalgic for home.

Strengths/Weaknesses: Kairi possesses a strong and pure heart (which is the essence of a person in the KH universe). This gives her great inner strength. She is bold, confident and optimistic. It takes a lot to shake her. It also grants her protection against the darkness of the world, and allows her some semblance of ability to “sense” when it is present. Her heart also gives her body an unusual characteristic- when she loses her heart, she does not become a Heartless or a Nobody. Instead, her body lies in a dormant, catatonic state, waiting for the heart to return. Though this may not be seen as a positive, it could hint at some longevity or durability not present in most others.

She is also stubborn and reckless to a fault; more likely to think with her heart than her head. Though she does what she believes is right, her actions can easily put herself and others in danger. Had she not been convinced to flee Hollow Bastion, and instead tried to rescue Riku as she had intended, she would have been recaptured, and made all of Sora and Riku’s sacrifices be for nothing. She is also, despite her inner strength, lacking in physical strength. She is still a small, fourteen-year-old girl with no combat experience. This won’t stop her from trying to fight if she feels it is necessary, however.

Kairi’s memory is also an issue. Large swaths of her memory are missing, or hazy. She has little memory of her world or her life before arriving on the Destiny Islands. Also, with her body comatose and her heart within Sora for most of the game, Kairi is only tangentially aware of the events succeeding her capture. While this will not be much of an issue within Route, it still bothers her greatly that she can’t remember so much.

[You would think most girls would be afraid of caves. They’re dark, spooky, filled with strange creatures. But then here’s Kairi, running out of the cave’s mouth with a large smile on her face and a Woobat on her shoulder. She giggles at her new friend before peering down into the PokéGear.]

Hey, guys! Check this out!

[She holds out a small pad of ink, which the Woobat gleefully dips his face into. He then pushes his nose against her cheek, before pulling away with a suction-like “pop”. Kairi grins, turning her cheek to the camera to reveal the ink left behind a perfect heart shape.]

These bats make hearts! Isn’t that cool? They're like little flying artists! Are there other pokemon that can do stuff like this?

Third Person Sample: Kairi hasn’t slept in three days. So much has changed since she came to Johto. This is the calmest world she has experienced in quite a while, and yet she’s never been more wound up. Though she lies comfortably in a large bed with soft pillows, her mind is back at Hollow Bastion. Her two closest friends had sacrificed themselves for their safety. One was lost to the darkness, the other being controlled by it. How could she allow herself to be comfortable while they are in agony?

She couldn’t stay in bed any longer. She throws her blanket to the floor and paces across the room. She does her best to contain the tears fighting to be released. She can’t make a scene. She can’t wake anyone up. She doesn’t want to be seen like this and she certainly doesn’t want to make this anyone else’s problem. She has her body back, but she feels as trapped as ever. For some reason, that made it worse. Without her heart, at least she knew there was nothing she could do. Here, she can claw and bite and run and cry and scream for help but nothing she can do will make a difference. This was a new level of helplessness.

She whines, biting her lip to suppress her sobbing. The thought stung, but she knows this was something she had to get out of her head. A way home would open up eventually; it was up to her to be ready for it when that happens. She knows that she isn't the strongest, but she had made new friends, both in the pokemon she caught and the trainers she met. If push came to shove, they could be her strength. She just had to put on a brave face. The bedroom window is unlocked, and the beach is not far away. Maybe now would be a good time for a walk.

List of episodes + summaries

Personality:
Dandy is not a role model, despite what his ego might try to tell him. Described as a "dandy guy in space", that apparently translates to "a big oaf who spends the majority of his time lusting after women". The biggest key factor to Dandy's personality is that he loves women, or rather he loves their body parts. If this is somehow not the first thing you pick up when meeting him, then consider yourself one of the rare ones. Constantly spouting nonsense about breasts and rears, it's almost like he goes out of his way to show off what a giant pervert he is. Dandy will go as far as to create elaborate, "inspirational" speeches regarding the subject and shows absolutely no shame in any of this. We never get a reason for where this love stems from, in fact we never get any sort of backstory on Dandy at all (at least at this point in time), so it can just be assumed that he's gross.

To no one's surprise, Dandy is therefore a huge fan of the Hooters-like space restaurant, "BooBies". He made it his goal to visit every location the chain has to offer and dreams of buying out the franchise one day so he can own it all for himself. In fact, it seems like the only reason why he has a job to begin with is so he can afford to visit as much as he wants. Outright stating that he'd rather die than miss out on BooBies, Dandy has declared that no one can keep him from the restaurant against his will. In fact, it seems to be his best driving factor. If any situation can end with "you get to go to BooBies after this", then Dandy will do anything in his power to get the job done. So of course it only makes sense to send him into a game where the chain doesn't exist.

Somewhat of a free, if not selfish, spirit, Dandy likes to live his life by going with the flow and not sweating the small stuff. It's pretty much child-like how he views life, where he can do anything he wants because he's an adult with money, and that he's a super cool guy because he travels SPACE and hunts for super rare ALIENS. Thankfully most people don't agree with this, but that doesn't seem to deflate his self image. He doesn't care what other people think of him provided their opinions aren't harming him physically. You'd be surprised how many empires you're unaware of want you dead for unexplained reasons. Due to some kind of blessing, Dandy at least follows the law to a somewhat-decent degree, so his "my way or the highway" lifestyle is seen only as a big annoyance than anything harmful. He has outright stated in canon that if he wants to do something, he's going to do it. If he doesn't want to do something? He's not going to do it. That's the Dandy way of life.

The Dandy way of life also likes to throw out the "go with the flow" rule out the window once someone bruises his pride. He has that, apparently. Once someone or something threatens Dandy's amazingness, whether by actually being successful or gaining more attention from women, Dandy loses his cool and declares said someone or something his rival. He will then do everything in his power to prove himself the better person, because what is doing your job? The best example of this is when a famous racer named Prince shows up at BooBies, grabbing all the waitresses' attention and completely ignoring Dandy. Without much thought, Dandy then declares himself a racer (In fact, he's claims to have been one all along! For real, you guys!) and enters the Galactic Grand Prix to one up the famous pretty boy. Due to his...unusual tactics (Like using magnets to stick to other racers or exploding missiles and using the force of the explosions to fling him ahead) Dandy was actually able to give Prince a run for his money. Of course, this is Space Dandy so the race didn't end in any normal fashion, but if you were to ask him, Dandy would definitely say he won in the end. Baby.

Friendship is definitely something Dandy seems to struggle with, it seems like he can't make friends unless you're willing to put up with his antics because he has no interest in changing. And that's not even considering if he likes you in return, you could offer him your kindness in the nicest way possible and he'd still act like a complete asshole if there's something he doesn't like about you. Dandy's only "friends" at the moment seem to be his "crew", his vacuum cleaner robot named QT and a cat-like alien--Betelgeusian--called Meow. Meow isn't even his real name, Dandy just couldn't be assed to learn how to pronounce his name, and thus gave him that creative nickname. That really goes to show you just how much Dandy cares about other people, especially the ones who he has to deal with on a daily basis. Dandy doesn't seem to like Meow much at all, constantly stating that he's lazy, a mooch, and a useless member of the team. He finds joy in upsetting him, like visiting his family against his wishes as Meow made it very clear he didn't want to go. If anything, that just pushed Dandy into doing it even more. The more extreme example would be his lack of interest in saving Meow's life when he was eaten by a giant monster. QT explained that Meow could still very well be alive, but Dandy continued to fly off in his ship already "mourning" Meow's loss. It was only until QT reminded Dandy that Meow was also the one holding his BooBies point card that Dandy flew back to do battle with the monster.

Compared to Meow, Dandy treats QT much better, and in fact QT could very well be Dandy's only true friend. Although it seems like QT gets just as annoyed with Dandy's antics as anyone else, constantly pointing out his contradictions and poor ideas, he still stays with him regardless. This could possibly be because QT's a robot and Dandy owns him in some way, whether through purchase or other means, it's never stated. There is some sense of kindness in their relationship, though, as QT has stated that he's terribly outdated and yet Dandy still keeps him anyway. Getting another, better model doesn't even look like an option, hinting at some sort of sentimental value. On the other end of the spectrum, this is still Dandy and thus he doesn't treat QT with as much respect one normally would a friend. For example, during a zombie invasion, Dandy used QT as a shield, claiming that robots couldn't "catch zombie" and therefore it was completely okay. Never mind QT's objections or anything. ...It also turned out that Dandy was wrong.

So far so good, right? At this rate, anyone would think that there's absolutely nothing good about this guy. And no one would blame them, it's almost like Dandy goes out of his way to shoo people off. Little do they know that out of seemingly nowhere, Dandy can actually be a really nice guy. Sounds absurd and chances are there are more people who will never find out about this than those who do see his nicer side, but it doesn't look like Dandy has any interest in proving people wrong about it. Again, Dandy doesn't care what people seem to think of him provided it's not shredding his ego.

The more vocal of his nicer traits is his love for animals. Or animals that aren't going to eat him, anyway. He adores dogs to the point of tears, all it takes is looking into their big ol' eyes. He honestly can't understand how anyone could hate a dog, just the idea can enrage him. He will pet and love on for hours on end and play with them like he's ten years old. On the sadder side of things, if a dog dies, he will take it pretty hard and mourn to extreme levels. Extreme, as in, he will build them a rocket out of scrap and give them a proper space funeral. Besides dogs, Dandy has expressed that he "loves birds" and has been seen absentmindedly petting Meow until he remembers he hates him again, promptly kicking him into the windshield.

With people, it's a little different. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to how fast Dandy can get to care about someone, but so far he seems to be a sucker for sob stories. The fastest he's ever shown compassion was when he met an older alien trapped in another dimension, which he affectionately referred to as "Pops", and invited him aboard his ship after hearing his tale of loss. Pops declines in the end, but it's still somewhat of a big deal as Dandy very rarely offers people a place on his ship. Where as Adélie, a young human-like alien child Dandy was set on bringing to the registration center for big money, slowly grew on him over time. Their relationship starts off rocky, Dandy even outright stating that he hates kids and that Adélie was no exception. As time went on, Dandy learns how the little girl was on her own since her mother passed away and slowly finds himself getting attached, even taking the time to stop at carnivals and such for her. He then spends an entire night searching for her grandfather and then helps protect her from other, less friendly alien hunters. Eventually, once everything is settled, he lets her go with her grandfather without having to stop by the registration center despite all the money he'd be losing. Considering Dandy's love of money as it's his ticket into BooBies and how difficult it is to score big bucks when it comes to alien hunting, this is a huge deal for him and shows just how much he's willing to care. Just...don't expect it often.

When it comes to actually showing affection towards people, Dandy is much more subtle about it than he is with animals. He will never actually state out loud that he cares about someone, instead he rather show it through his actions. Anything from buying presents to taking them out, all the way to risking his neck out for someone, just don't expect Dandy to spell it out for you. In fact, he might still try to make you believe that he doesn't care while proving the exact opposite through his actions. Why Dandy chooses to hide this softer side is never given, but it could be because it'd ruin is too cool for you self image.

Other bits and pieces of Dandy's personality include his love for Hawaii. His ship is called the Aloha Oe, the escape ship is called the Little Aloha, and THAT turns into a mecha he calls Hawaii Yankee. The interior of the ship is littered with Hawaiian-related knickknacks and it is strongly suggested that Dandy is, surprise, from Hawaii. He seemed pretty upset when Meow and QT suggested he was a tourist. He also has a liking for ramen, going as far as to have a special stash, and if the pompadour wasn't a big enough clue, a passion for hair care.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

Most of Dandy's strength and weaknesses seem to play by the "rule of funny" as in, whether or not he succeeds or not depends on what would make the better punchline. For example, in some cases Dandy is completely terrible at the things he does. He can fire into a large group of aliens and miss every single one of them. There are also episodes where he's literally died. On the other side of the coin, Dandy can be downright awesome. He can go toe to toe with giant alien monsters in his robot mecha, and he's been shown taking out a large chunk of a war fleet in a single blast from his ship. Again, it really depends on the mood of the scene and what would get a laugh. But as for things that are set in stone:

STRENGTHS
Surfing:
Tying in with his love for Hawaii, Dandy is an amazing surfer to the point where it literally saved his life. He doesn't surf often, though, claiming he only waits for the biggest, absolutely perfect waves. Anything else just isn't worth the time, in fact you might as well just insulted him. He then had no problem admitting that he pulled that excuse out of his ass seconds later. This will probably play later when he gets his hands on a surfing Pokemon. Never know when someone might throw a weird anime-like surfing competition or whatever. It is Pokemon after all.

Hunting:
He may not be the best alien hunter, far from it actually, but this is Dandy's occupation. The fact that when he's not thrown into some sort of crazy situation, that he seems to be surviving proves he's able to live off of this lifestyle. He's caught aliens others have failed to catch and risks his own life on a daily basis. Pokemon training might as well be the same thing, only less dangerous and much less space involved.

Lack of shame:
Dandy's mottos are "Go with the flow" and "Don't sweat the small stuff". Because of this, he rarely feels things like embarrassment and is less likely to give up because of something like, say, having your consciousness inside a stuffed penguin. Or other similar nonsense, really things like that don't seem to bother him.

Big heart:
If he doesn't hate you and you can stick with him long enough, you might find that Dandy is surprisingly caring. He's a good example of the "Jerk with a Heart of Gold" trope. But again, this is only if you're willing to deal with his less desirable traits. Though once he's deemed you a friend, he will go as far as to risk his life for you. It's almost amazing what a turn around it is, seriously.

Handiness:
Somehow Dandy is able to make stuff out of garbage, although it won't exactly be perfect. It just has to do what he wants. He can also put together dumb costumes, although they won't exactly fool anyone.

WEAKNESSES
Intelligence:
Dandy is an idiot, that's all there is to it. Most of his plans only seem to work thanks to pure luck and often times he's the cause of whatever dangerous situation the crew find themselves in. It causes him to be impulsive, reckless, and not really think things through. Thanks to the events of episode seven, Dandy and friends received the group nickname of "BBP" or "Blockhead, Bonehead, and Pinhead". The narrator reuses these names in later episodes, Dandy being Blockhead.

Standoffish:
The whole "Jerk with a Heart of Gold" wouldn't come into play if he wasn't a jerk. Dandy's prone to arguing, fighting, and pissing people off on purpose. "Friends" are not off limits, if anything they might as well be subject to it more since they spend more time with him.

Gross Pervert:
Probably stemming from his lack of shame, Dandy's view of woman generally makes him an unlikable person. He also lacks a filter when it comes to who he talks to about the loveliness of women, so be prepared for that. He'll hit on anyone he deems has a good enough butt and breasts, even if they're another alien species. Just as long as they're sentient. (Thankfully that won't come into play and I'm not about to make him lust after pokemon) He draws the line at kids/teenagers/the younglings, though, or anyone he might assume is a kid. So...there's that.

Laziness:
When he isn't working, Dandy is in his ship floating in space and not doing much of anything. He reads magazines, munches on snacks, and does what any good slacker does when they're given too much freedom. To his credit, he did buy a robot to clean after him so the ship isn't a complete mess, but that can also be used against him since...well, he literally bought a robot to do all the work for him.

It should be noted that he does have bouts of motivation when he becomes emotional or BooBies is on the line. (Building rockets out of nowhere, helping little girls, trying to turn the page of a calendar because he's stuck in a time loop, etc) Again, it really depends what's considered funnier. This will more than likely effect his Pokemon training style.

Lying, Contradictions, and more!
Because no one knows anything about his past, Dandy likes to make up stuff constantly. Anything to make him appear cooler than he really is, although the rest of the cast is quick to point out when something doesn't seem right. Like when he mentioned what an amazing surfer he was, only to go on about being an awesome street racer the next episode. The crew was having none of that. He also has a nasty habit of contradicting himself often, in fact the first episode starts off with him declaring men are too obsessed with breasts. The next episode he goes on about his own breast obsession, to which QT comments that he was saying the exact opposite just before. Dandy dismisses him, saying that never happened, which just adds to the fact that he's a lying liar who lies. Seriously, good luck ever learning anything about this guy's past.

[As the feed turns on, someone is looking far too smug for their own good. In fact, he appears to be leaning into the feed as best he can just so everyone can see just how smug he is. On his shoulder rests a tiny little Starly, who just looks happy to be there, regardless of what her trainer is doing.]

Yeesh, talk about your outdated tech. Joke's on you suckers, I already have a communicator.

[And just to prove his point, he ever so proudly holds up his wrist, displaying what appears to be a thick bracelet. Definitely not some kind of fashion statement, its simple design could make anyone wonder how that thing is a comm in the first place. He grins ear to ear as he continues to wave it about, until the device begins to spark, causing his feathered partner to flap her wings out of surprise. Although he continues to wear his smile, his eyes tell a different story as they travel over to the sparking device, worry written all over them. Without a moment's more of hesitation, he quickly whips his arm behind his back, his smugness now rather forced than genuine.]

You...didn't see that.

[Although his pokemon--now finally calmed down--seems to suggest otherwise as she peeks behind him, just as worried.]

But hey, free stuff is free stuff, baby! Guess I could give this hunk of junk a run for its money. And no, it has nothing to do with whatever it is you're thinking about. It's called charity. As in, it's charity that I'm even going out of my way to deal with it in the first place. I know, I'm just that nice of a guy.

[Smoke begins to rise from behind him, followed by the WOOSH one would normally hear when a fire begins blazing. Dandy no longer has his attention on the feed as he turns around to look at his now flaming bracelet.]

SON OF A--

[Cut off by a loud squawk, the feed abruptly ends.]

Third Person Sample:
You can take the man out of space, but you can't take the space out of the man. Or something like that, Dandy didn't care that much. What he did care about, however, was getting airborne again. Granted it wasn't space, nothing on this rock would ever be space, but he could make things a little more bearable. Trainers were always going on about flying on their pokemon, how it made things easier from getting to place to place. If there's one thing Dandy liked, it was making things easier for himself, and as luck would have it, he was blessed with starting with a Flying-type pokemon.

Stepping out of the mart, Dandy whistled a happy little tune as he spung what looked like a pair of goggles on his finger casually. "Go-Goggles" they called them, although the salesperson had to remind Dandy that they weren't sure what real use the goggles had in the Johto region. Not that Dandy was listening, all he knew was that they had "Go" in the name, and going is exactly what he was aiming for. It made sense in his head, there was really no talking him out of it.

Strutting up to his little Starly who waited for him outside the mart door, the tiny bird seemed uneasy with the entire plan. Oh, she knew what was going on, Dandy had mentioned more than enough times that he was interested in flying. It was just that they didn't have the appropriate HM and Dandy was under the impression that anything with wings could use the move without issue.

"So who's ready for liftoff?" Dandy greeted his partner with an eager grin and thumbs up, holding up the goggles in his other hand. Starly immediately shook her head, but all it did was upset her trainer. "Ohh no, don't give me any of that crap. I see tiny birds lifting people all the time. Now stop being a slacker and start with the flying already!"

Starly sighed as she fluttered herself onto Dandy's shoulder, her trainer slapping on the Go-Goggles as his optimism returned. Just thinking of all the walking time he'd be cutting out made him giddy, and soon enough he was pulling of a pose much like he would do before he was dragged to this god awful planet.

"Let's blow this popsicle stand, baby!!" swinging his arm in the most over dramatic fashion he could muster, he pointed skyward and awaited for his pokemon to lift him in the air. Starly began beating her wings rapidly as she grabbed Dandy's jacket, the struggle plain as day on her face. All this shouting and posing soon began to gather a crowd, and just about everyone in town began to stop what they were doing to watch this very strange man in goggles force a small bird to lift him up. It's failing, of course, and Dandy's arm slowly began to drop to his side.

"This...isn't going the way I wanted it to."

Timeline: Post Chapter Five
Canon Resource Links:
Sonia Wiki
Super Dangan Wki

Personality: Princess Sonia Nevermind can fool you but it’s not on purpose. With a first look and a first conversation, it’s easy to think that’s she’s just a kind, sweet, gentle girl who wants everyone to be happy. Now that’s not to say that isn’t who she is. She cares fondly about everyone, and her sweetness borders on the naïve. When Teruteru says his penis is poisoned and needs to be sucked out, she has to be convinced by others not to do it. (Several times.) Her attitude towards such things is more of a ‘You can count on me!’ thought, as she enjoys being someone you can rely on.

However once you get to know her, you start to notice some odd things. As a princess, it’s difficult to have things in common with the lower classes, and as such she will often pepper outdated slang into her dialogue in order to be ‘closer’ to people. She has absolutely no idea how strange it is to hear ‘hella awesome!’ come out of her mouth. She doesn’t want to be treated as superior or different because of where she came from, and enjoys doing mundane things with her friends. That said, it’s not difficult to become her friend, as she’s very easygoing and accepting.

As you get closer to hear and discover more of her likes and dislikes, that’s where things get especially odd. Despite her fondest wishes for peace and happiness, she absolutely adores serial killers. She views people like Genocider Syo as heroes who strike down evil doers for justice! She loves to read and learn more about them, although she herself would never hurt a soul. It’s a dark fascination that also has her in love with the occult and the horror genre. One of her favorite days is Friday the 13th, which she sees as a holiday.

Her strangeness and normalcy can both be put on hold if something extremely urgent is going on. She has the ability to command authority and assert herself over others, which they describe as an ‘aura’ of royalty. She by no means uses this for tyrannical or bossy means – she does this to keep everyone’s heads cool and level, and make sure the right things get done, such as launching an investigation into another kid’s murders to having others listen during her opinion during a trial. She takes her position as a princess very seriously, and sees nothing wrong with her country. In that same vein, she doesn’t see her country as superior to anyone else’s. However she is often shocked by the differences between her country and others. When finding a tank on Jabberwock island, she’s surprised Hinata doesn’t know how to work it, as in her country, kids as young as elementary students learn how to use army equipment.

She’s not a virgin, but at the same time is very naïve when it comes to most sexual talk and innuendo. It’s not that she’s never heard of these dirty things, but that she would have an easier time understanding you if you were more blunt about it. She might still be embarrassed to talk about it, as shown when Togami reveals they could see ‘everything’ the students did, Sonia insists they delete the footage or else ‘I’ll never be able to get married!’ So while it’s not exactly a matter of purity, she does value privacy and has the heart of a gentle maiden.

To sum it up – Sonia is an unusual princess with a hobby of looking up serial killers, but on the whole is someone who would make a valuable and comforting best friend.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths :
‘Royal Aura’ – As described by the other kids, this is when Sonia issues a command with all the power and superiority of a royal. It can often encourage others to try and kneel, but generally it’s just used to get attention.

Military and Weaponry Knowledge – Her country teaches their youth to know all about military weapons and most forms of weaponry in order to defend their home. Sonia knows how to operate high level equipment such as tanks.

Weaknesses :

Naivety – Because she’s rarely been around kids her own age, she isn’t entirely aware of what’s normal in society or what the hip cool kids talk about. As such, she can be tricked into saying innuendos or believing things that just aren’t true.

Superiority – Though it doesn’t show up that often, sometimes when she is most miserable or angry, she will snap that she is better than people, such as ‘How dare you talk to me!’ However, she’s also shown to regret these instances right after.

First Person Sample: [Sonia clicks on the device, eyes narrow and with a serious expression. It appears, if one takes a look at her surroundings, she’s in a library, as stacks of books are on her left and right. Her Combee is humming peacefully on top of the left stack, taking a well deserved nap.]

Pardon the intrusion, but I have noticed something deeply unsettling within this world. It has come to my attention that there has never been a single serial killer in the history of Johto! Although I admit my research is limited, since the literature they provide here is mostly Pokemon related. You would think they would have a few books about humans.

But that brings me back to the point! Surely someone along the way would use their Pokemon to do a mass amount of murder! Pokemon themselves can be extremely deadly. Why, on my journey to the Pokemon Center, I could have died in five different ways! How is that no one ever took advantage of this? I refuse to believe it! That’s why I’m calling upon those who have been here longer – surely you’ve witnessed some sort of serial killing in the past of Pokemon. And I want to hear all about it! What Pokemon they used, the victims… I promise to remember all of it! Thank you in advance!

[Then, a pause, as if she’s remembering something. She tilts her head, instantly cheery, almost giggling.]

Oh, I almost forgot. I won the Bug Contest! Yay! It was quite thrilling!

Third Person Sample:
So this was the famous Ecruteak Dance Hall. Sonia was buzzing with excitement louder than her own bee Pokemon, the two of them standing in the doorway, her hands clasped together. The Japanese culture truly thrived here, and she could not wait to absorb every single piece of it. She took a deep breath, and then entered the small building, instantly struck by the beauty of its simplicity. The show had not begun yet, but there were already people sitting on their knees on soft cushions, and murmurs of the audience in anticipation. She'd better grab a seat if she wanted a good view!

She scanned the area, trying to determine the best spot, but Combee had other ideas. She flew ahead, deciding Sonia would sit right at the front - despite the fact an older gentleman had already taken that table. Sonia gasped, and quickly jogged towards the startled man. "Come back here, Combee! We can't sit there!" But Combee plopped herself on the table, refusing to budge. The man opened his mouth to speak but Sonia stuck her hand out, shouting. "Combee! I said no!" She would not have her first experience at the dance hall be marred and ruined by her own Pokemon! Combee appeared to grumble, but then used it's tiny wings to hover and move to a space above Sonia's right shoulder. "That was incredibly rude of you, Combee." Sonia continued to lecture, wagging a disciplinary finger at her. "You must remember who and what you represent!" She then turned to apologize to the man, but he'd already left during the small fight.

Sonia blinked, looking around for a few seconds. Well... to the victor go the spoils. Surely she could find him after the show and apologize then. She delicately knelt down on the pillow, smoothing down her dress, but she would not look at her smirking Pokemon. "When the show is over, you and I are going to have a long, serious discussion about... Oooh, it's starting!" She squealed, clapping her hands as the curtains began to part.

Character
Name: Greed
Series: Fullmetal Alchemist (2003)
Timeline: Episode 34, directly before meeting Dante in Lyra's body
Canon Resource Links: http://fma.wikia.com/wiki/Greed specifically, the section titled "2003". Several of the dub names are different in the 2003 anime versus the manga and 2009 anime both for places and people.
Personality: Like his name suggests, he's greedy. He says himself that he wants everything the world has to take. Women, money, status, power, eternal life-- he wants all of it. He's monumentally selfish and knows it and doesn't really care at all about Dante's goals. He doesn't want to become human, and he also doesn't want to exist as her pawn.

Having been created from the remains of Dante's human lover, Greed more than likely has access to his human memories just as the other homunculi are shown to have, though they're not indicated in the show itself. One can speculate, however, that most if not all of the memories he has have to deal with Dante and being her lover given his behavior towards her-- he's unable to harm Ed knowing that Dante is watching him and he inevitably finds himself drawn back to the place where he was born. It's part the fact that he really wants attention and also partially the fact that he desperately wants her attention in particular.

Somehow, despite being the homunculus that has spent the most time isolated and alone to think about revenge, Greed manages to be the least psychopathic of the seven homunculi. He's reasonably stable and though he doesn't seem especially bothered by the prospect of having to hurt or kill people, he does go out of his way to avoid it except in very specific circumstances, saying that it's "not his style." Included in this is his specific desire to avoid hurting women, which might have to do with his attachment to Dante.

Remarkably, despite his name being Greed and avarice being a key part of his personality, Greed genuinely seems to care for his friends. The chimera that he rescues from Lab 5 become incredibly loyal to him and he in turn is protective of them, urging his followers not to go through with suicidal attacks. It's probably in large part due to his own greed and selfishness that he dislikes seeing people be so selfless for his own sake. He's greedy and selfish and has trouble understanding why someone would want to die for him because he certainly doesn't want to die for someone else. Even so, he is clearly shown to mourn the loss of his followers and he urges Al to protect Marta after the death of the other chimera, also letting Al go in turn which effectively ends his search for getting his spirit attached to armor.

Maybe it's because he found himself getting attached to Al that he decided not to hurt him after all, it's not entirely clear, but it would make sense because he also knowingly engages in a fight with Ed that was extremely likely to end in his own death. To help Ed out and throw the ultimate wrench in Dante's plans, he's willing to die to give the information that the alchemist needs in order to defeat the other homunculi. That sheer amount of self sacrifice seems to be the antithesis of what Greed exists to be, but it's also not entirely surprising that a greedy man would ultimately want to die on his own terms rather than be imprisoned for centuries once more.

It's not accurate to call him a "good" person because of his selfishness and the fact that he was willing to kill Al to figure out how a spirit attachment is done, but his bond with the chimera is proof that he does genuinely care about people, as is the fact that he eventually let Al go when he was certain that his confrontation with Dante would end in the loss of his life. He's selfish but not unnecessarily cruel; this is an important distinction. He's not "good" but he's also not evil either, floating somewhere in between. He is extremely loyal to the chimeras he broke out of Lab 5 and would absolutely never betray them even in a situation where it would be advantageous for him to do so.

Greed's hideout with the chimera is in the basement of a dingy bar called The Devil's Nest, which says that he's not afraid of hanging out with outlaws. Unlike the other homunculi who treat humans like something beneath them, Greed is at least capable of a somewhat civil discussion. He makes it clear that he's extremely strong and not someone to be messed with, but he also is fairly content being around outlaws. He's shown with his arms around human women in the hideout while discussing what to do about Wrath. In general, he seems capable of genuinely getting along with people so long as they don't treat him like trash for being a homunculus or otherwise try to provoke him.
ossifragant: (⊗ which way the head will roll)

[personal profile] ossifragant 2014-03-30 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Strengths/Weaknesses: Being a homunculus, there is something about Greed that feels fundamentally incomplete. He's not human, and any memories he has of being human are in conflict with his current identity of something that is decidedly different. Because of the cognitive dissonance between indentifying as something not human but also remembering, however vaguely, what it's like to be human, the homunculi are full of self loathing and Greed isn't really that different in that regard. Sure, he may be one of the only homunculi who genuinely doesn't want to become human-- because then he wouldn't be able to be immortal and he wouldn't be able to get everything in the world, but he is also still partially the human he was before. He's still in love with Dante but is in complete denial over this given the fact that Dante is the one who imprisoned him and also created him, giving her extreme power over him that didn't exist when he had been her human lover. He might not even be aware of it entirely himself, but he still finds himself drawn to the woman even after she had kept him imprisoned for 130 years.

There are other weaknesses associated with his being a homunculus-- he is immortal so long as the red stones are in his body. Being killed repeatedly drains his life source as does walking into an alchemical array meant to bind him as it causes the homunculi to vomit the stones back up and leave him extremely weakened and mortal. He is also weakened by being exposed to the remains of the person he's supposed to be. Greed is shown to be capable of moving around them even while he is in obvious discomfort, but other homunculi are shown to be paralyzed when exposed to their remains or outright faint. This is something that won't apply to him in the setting, but it will nevertheless still affect him because he is aware of his weakness-- it's a profound reminder that he isn't human even if there's no actual risk for him.

Another weakness would be how attached to people Greed gets. It doesn't happen often, but when it does happen, he's very protective of the people who have allied with him and he has a tendency to take betrayal extremely personally. It's difficult to gain his trust, but once a person does, he's a fairly trusting man and that is something incredibly exploitable-- he was genuinely blindsided by Kimbley's betrayal despite earlier banter that seemed to hint towards him not entirely trusting the man.

In terms of strengths, Greed is the Ultimate Shield. Even though in terms of the setting he won't have access to such an ability, given that his power is an ability to make himself indestructible, it gives him a sense of confidence and ego. It makes him a formidable opponent and even without his Ultimate Shield, he is clearly an expert a hand to hand combat. Even when extremely vulnerable from both being drained of the stones in his body and exposed to his own remains he is a formidable opponent and would more than likely be capable of holding his own in a fight even without his abilities to alter the chemical makeup of his own body.

He's also extremely charismatic-- moments after breaking free from is prison in the basement of Lab 5, Greed was able to sway the chimera being held into the lab onto his side very quickly by promising the chance to get revenge against the people who experimented on them, and indeed he managed to get more than just the chimera on his side judging by the sheer amount of people who associate with him in his brief time at The Devil's Nest.

Another strength of sorts is how easygoing Greed is. For someone who is hiding out from someone who wants to kill or recapture him, he's extremely relaxed. He's more concern when the military attacked the Devil's Nest that his fight has been interrupted than being caught. Though this could also be easily turned into a weakness because of how overwhelmed he can get when he gets over his head. All sense of that relaxation melts away and he can become very distracted and frantic, eager to protect his allies.

First Person Sample: [A man's face appears on the PokeConnect, staring curiously at it. The video shakes as though he's still playing with it, and it's a moment before he speaks.]

This thing on?

[There's a murmur from off camera and the man grins, showing off a row of shark-like teeth.]

Excellent. Hello there. The name's Greed. I've just arrived here in... ah, what was it called? New Bark Town. Yeah, that's it.

I've got a couple of questions.

Are the women here always so stiff? I offered to buy this beautiful woman in a short skirt a drink and I thought she was about to slug me. Something about not bribing "an officer of the law."

[Shrug.]

If someone could be so kind as to tell me if there are any women around here who can have fun I'd appreciate it.

[Where to start? He needs to do something. Dante can't stop him here. The other homunculi can't stop him here. He'll create his very own little kingdom.

Of course, he can't very well broadcast that to a bunch of strangers, can he? No, this is something he'll keep to himself. It'll be his little secret. His little surprise for this place.]

Oh, right. One more question: are there any bars nearby?

A man's gotta have a drink.
Third Person Sample: He had just stepped foot inside Dante's house. That much Greed knew for sure. It had been night out, and he had expected that things were not going to end well for him. But he hadn't even gotten a chance to see the old woman. Whatever happened, he supposed he wasn't going to complain.

More than likely, he would have died. But here, he had a chance. Some sort of chance, anyway. He felt... different somehow. He couldn't exactly tell what felt different, but it was there. And there had been a cat sleeping on the foot of the bed when he had woken up that brightened and meowed at him as soon as it saw he was awake. "Hello there," he said, reaching out to pet at the cat curiously. It had something on its head that looked strangely like a coin, but one brush of a thumb against it revealed that whatever it was, it was firmly attached to the cat's head.

"What's your name?" he asked the cat, smirking.

The cat responded with what Greed thought was a very strange meow. Oh, well. A cat was still a cat as far as Greed was concerned. "Well, if you don't have one, I'm going to call you Marta," he said, smiling just slightly. Hopefully the real Marta was doing fine. He had failed the others. The last thing that he wanted to do was find out that she had gotten hurt, too. If Al didn't keep her safe, he'd...

Well. He couldn't do anything here.

Normally, this sort of thing would bother him, but he was Greed. He had been prepared to die, but now dying didn't sound like such a good idea. He wanted to live. He wanted to find out where he was, and he was going to be taking the cat with him. Hopefully no one would miss it because he wasn't about to give it back.

That and he needed to figure out where the hell that music was coming from.

For now Greed was going to figure out where exactly he was. It wasn't much fun having to start over from the beginning. He didn't even have the opportunity to get help this time. "Say, Marta," Greed said, speaking even though he was certain the cat couldn't really understand him. "What if I were to tell you that I want you to help me find something? Find our very own pile of riches. If it's just between you and me-- well, maybe I won't mind sharing."

It had to be impossible, but he could have sworn the cat's eyes gleamed.

Character
Name: Scar
Series: Fullmetal Alchemist (2003 series)
Timeline: End of episode 42
Canon Resource Links: Scar's page on the FMA wiki. Please note that there are inaccuracies for a few specific details, and that Scar is a very different character in the manga and the 2009 anime compared to his 2003 counterpart. Only information regarding the 2003 series pertains to this Scar.

Personality: The first and most important aspect of Scar's personality is that he the product of a very hard life. Although he has not even lived 30 years, Scar has endured more suffering and loss than most people experience in a lifetime. To say that he even "endured" it is not entirely accurate. He may have survived the loss of his family, the genocide of most of his country, homelessness, and running from the most powerful military force in his world, but Scar is unrecognisable when compared to himself some 15 years ago. He is bitter, depressed, and withdrawn, and hasn't known any semblance of normalcy in a very long time.

In day to day conversation, Scar is pretty much the "strong, silent type." He doesn't set aside time for chatter, or much social activity at all. He doesn't do things for fun, he does them for practicality. His speech patterns can often come across as stiff, overly proper, and often a touch melodramatic. Ask him about his personal life, and you'll be met with a frown, not that he really has a personal life to speak of. He has no family left, and he won't speak of his deceased brother except in extreme circumstances. He hasn't had a friend in the traditional sense of the word since the war, and has severe issues with trust. Often times, a stranger is guilty until proven innocent. Scar has some serious tunnel vision, and will fixate on minor details, often to avoid a difficult emotional topic at large. It's a defence mechanism, similar to his anger. In emotional or difficult personal situations, he will quickly grow frustrated and angry- both as a coping mechanism and in frustration for his own emotional stuntedness. In many ways, he is aware that he does not react to situations the way he should, and this can make him angry at himself and aggravate his self-loathing tendencies. He is very quick to point out and prod at faults in others that he also sees in himself, and he has a severe lack of tact in conversation. Sometimes, this is completely intentional. Scar is a spiteful, bitter man, and he tends to push that onto others. He's pushy and incredibly stubborn. When he sets his mind to something, it's his way or no way. Scar has little regard for authority figures for a similar reason. He will rebel against someone just because he doesn't like them.

Though he no longer considers himself a proper Ishbalan because of the atrocities he as committed, Scar still adheres to many traditional Ishbalan tendencies, and is very judgemental of those who live outside certain social boundaries that he considers acceptable. Women should be "decently covered." Public drunkenness is shameful; he almost never touches alcohol. He frowns upon casual sex and would be That Guy who "accidentally" sprays the PDA offenders with a hose. He can be a huge, fun-sucking stiff. You know those people who just liven the party when they walk in? Scar is the opposite. He will sit in a corner and sulk about how he has to be there. He can really be a giant, overgrown manbaby. If someone flirts with him, there is approximately a .001% chance that he will notice. He has always been clueless in that department, and the events of his life have only fostered this. This "who, me?" tendency carries into his platonic interactions as well. Scar isn't used to people reacting positively to him. He doesn't expect anybody to go out of their way for him. He always assumes that people think the worst.

In spite of the blank, angry mask he presents, Scar is an extremely emotional person. He lets emotions bubble and store inside him until they spill out, sometimes suddenly, sometimes over time. These feelings can be positive or negative, depending on the situation. Positive ones, he tends to hide meticulously, epseically if they are about other people. He is a very polarized and self-contradicting person, prone to bouts of behavior that could very well completely go against what he was saying five minutes ago. He can be perfectly calm one minute, then see something or hear something seemingly innocent and be triggered to rage. There are few things that won't set him off in one way or another. Racial discussion, talk of war, an attempt to control him, or any sort of threat to what few things he holds important could trigger rages. Topics that remind him of his guilt could send him into deep depressive states. The value he places on human life is disturbingly warped. He knowingly and willingly sacrificed thousands of lives for the sake of one, and will very quickly throw his own life away. And yet, he still shows signs that he is aware of the wrongness of his actions. Why he still does these things, even he isn't sure. All in all, Scar is extremely emotionally unstable.

The deeper part of Scar that is rarely put on display is the source of many of his problems. The only thing that can truly terrify Scar is loss. Fear of his own death is warped and pushed to the side, because of both his emotional troubles and his obsessive protectiveness of the few things he holds dear. Scar shows affection by taking stupid risks. In many ways, he has a childish, ego-centric view of himself as some kind of "other." No, he can't have friends because he's him. Why would he have a normal life? He's Scar! Scar gets trapped in a delusion that it is simply not possible for him to lead a normal life or to find happiness. He often justifies this as some sort of divine punishment.

Those who get close ('close' being relative in most cases) to Scar might notice some smaller behavioral ticks or personal issues, many of which he is loath to let onto. Thanks to his experience with human alchemy as well as the war/genocide, he suffers from severe post-traumatic stress disorder. Scar sleeps poorly, and has frequent nightmares revolving around the violence of the war, the horror of human alchemy, and his loved ones' roles in all of it. He is notably paranoid about the supposedly bad intentions of others, and he struggles to shut off his mind and stop thinking. To stop being worried all the time. He struggles with situations that cannot be solved by force or strategy, and he can easily be described as a brute. Scar always has an escape path in mind. He walks on the more sheltered side of the street. He keeps his eyes on the sidewalk. On bad days, it's like he never left the war behind. In addition to this, he exercises meticulously, and will read for hours when he has books available. Anything to keep his depressed and anxious mind busy. When he is certain he's alone, Scar will talk to himself, mostly to his brother and less frequently to God.

During the years following the war, Scar molded himself as a tool for revenge. His self-worth became entirely focused on his hatred for Amestris and for his brother for befalling such tragedy on his life. He was more like a machine than a man, citing God as justification for his murders when even he knew that they were morally wrong. There's that self contradiction: Scar insists that he is carrying out the will of God by killing State Alchemists, yet he insists that he is such a stained man that he cannot accept the hospitality of his people. He kills alchemists with alchemy, a forbidden practice, yet insists that he is only doing "what his arm instructs him." Scar is always looking for someone to blame, even if his conclusion makes no sense. In a situation post his death and by extension the "completion" of his revenge, he is a man without purpose. A decade of blinding hatred has made him forget what it means to simply live. This affects his already dangerously low sense of self worth. He threw his life away for revenge because he had nothing left. Now what does he have? What is his purpose? He doesn't have one.

Scar is a person who will often fail to see what he has until it is threatened. Because Scar makes such scant few connections with people, those who do grow close to him really stand out. Almost always, if he connects with someone, it is because they remind him of some positive aspect of his life that existed in the past. Before people are themselves in Scar's eyes, they represent someone else. They can grow out of that in his eyes, but usually, that shadow will always be there. He projects what he wants to see on others, and he does not connect to people in a normal way. This is most evident in his relationships with Lust and the Elric brothers, Lust being a literal manifestation of someone he loves, and the Elrics representing his younger self and his brother, as both families share many connections. When he makes these kinds of connections, they are a constant struggle of wanting to cling to them and wanting to push them away. This is his fear of loss at work; Scar has never known permanence, and though it is an impossible thing to fully attain, he thinks it even more improbable than it actually is. Everything is taken away from him. It's like the universe is out to get him. Again, that egocentricism. Maybe some people can find happiness, but not him. He was denied that in life. This takes a heavy toll on Scar's would-be relationships with people. He can be extremely possessive, yet cold and dismissive. He can't tell a person simply that he cares about them, yet he will relatively easily put his life on the line for another.

With Scar's tendency to bottle his emotions and let them stew comes some strange and highly charged outlooks in the long term. Scar sat on his hatred for his brother for years, clinging to it and letting it fuel him. It wasn't until his dying moments that he finally let it go, confessing that he had loved the other man. Post-death, he has to live with the constant regret and guilt of how he treated his brother. This is something that has been weighing him down for over a decade, but he has only just started to face it. He also struggles to face the reality and implications of Lust, both in her mere existence and in who she is to Scar. She is a perfect duality, representing both his greatest traumas and regrets as well as his only constant and potential source of something that even resembles happiness. She brings out his worst and his best. Lust stirs his impulsiveness like no one else can, yet he over-analyses her every move. He can't think around her, can't ignore her, can't even stay angry at her much to his frustration. Again, this is mostly because "Lust" technically had her foot in the door a long time ago. Scar never let go of his feelings for his brother's fiancee, ashamed of them as he was, and now she's suddenly back, a walking, talking *slap* in the face of everything Scar held sacred. It's like some horrible, supernatural soap opera. Lust is a crazy, unlikely exception to many of Scar's usual tendencies. He doesn't normally form romantic attachment, but with the old, twisted feelings to build on, the possibility is now there. She both baffles him and draws him in. She becomes his anchor, both repulsive and alluring in her very nature.

Although Scar is a largely dysfunctional person in many angles of his life, he is extremely intelligent. He was able to transmute the Philosopher's Stone, after all, something that even the most advanced alchemists can only dream of. Yet Scar was able to do it by using his brother's scattered notes and the advice of an old Ishbalan exile. He is a triple treat, you could almost call it. He is scientifically and mathematically brilliant, evidenced by his alchemic prowess. He is a physical force to be reckoned with, with his speed, strength, and training. He is a surprisingly effective manipulator when it serves his pre-outlined cause. There is a reason that the Amestrian military didn't corner him until he decided he wanted them to. Scar can effortlessly appeal to a group of people at large, especially an angry group of people. In canon, he successfully convinces an entire oppressed city that one young woman is their Holy Mother, and gets them to fight on his behalf while he plots the destruction of several thousand Amestrian troops. When his cause is cold and detached enough, Scar can be cult-leader levels of charismatic. This is not something that he frequently takes advantage of. For the most part, Scar prefers to keep his methods to himself, refusing to rely on others as coincides with his approach to everything else in his life.

If all of this rage and emptiness is Scar's "nurtured" state, the result of his life, his "natural" personality may appear to be the exact opposite. Throughout his youth, Scar was quiet and gentle. He is the way he is today because what happened over the course of those four years twisted his good nature into something grotesque and nearly unrecognisable. He holds very dearly the people he loves, and would protect them at any cost. A threat to someone Scar cares about has always triggered a rage in him that used to be scary, because how could such fire come from such a mild-mannered boy? When looking back on Scar's personality before life dealt him a steaming pile of shit, it becomes more clear as to why he is the way he is today. With this being said, how much of this younger self is truly dead? The truth is, a lot of it is still in there. Scar's lifestyle of violence exhausts him, and his obsessive anger has led him to become completely burned out. He so willingly walked to his death because he didn't know how he could possibly keep going like this. It is not in Scar's nature to be an empty killing machine. That "self" was artificially shaped by both himself and the events around him, and he has grown to despise it, because it ruined what little chances of a life in his home world he had left. The entire persona of "Scar" is not him, and living as "Scar" has finally worn him to the last thread. He states openly in canon that he doesn't deserve his old identity. That his old self is dead. But, in yet another self-contradiction, his nature shines through. His gentleness, devotion, and protectiveness, evidenced mostly by his interactions with Lust and the Elrics, remain the most base of his attributes. He has a fondness and comfort with children that would shock those who only know the gruffer facade he puts up. Throughout both Fullmetal canons (which are drastically different) he comes to serve as a father figure for other characters. His protective nature makes him prone to taking care of things. Scar does emotionally better when he knows that someone is depending on him.

He also really loves cats.

[personal profile] envy_the_sinners 2014-03-30 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Strengths/Weaknesses:

+Scar is a survivor. He grew up in the harsh desert and has lived on the city streets and successfully crossed the wilderness alone. He thrives in harsh environments.
+He has an incredibly high tolerance for pain, and his stubborn, nearing brutish drive makes him a force to be reckoned with in anything he chooses to set his mind to.
+Even without alchemy, he is a very accomplished fighter. Fast, agile, and very strong.
+Scar is highly intelligent, and picks up on new concepts at almost an alarming rate.
+Connects very well with animals (and by extention, pokémon), often much better than he does with people.
+Surprisingly soothing toward children.
+Brave. Bleeds Gryffindor Scarlet. It's almost a fault.

-He works best when he is alone, and struggles when forced to cooperate directly with others.
-Life's more... delicate subjects completely elude him. Ask him to talk about his feelings in any capacity? He's outta here.
-He is highly manipulable in that the people whom he cares about can easily be used against him.
-Scar doesn't think clearly in intense situations when others he cares about are involved. He reacts upon pure instinct, and his instincts... aren't always the best.
-Notably, he also cannot swim and is very wary of large bodies of water. He sinks like a rock.
-Scar's emotions are volatile, bordering on out-of-control.
-Takes poor care of himself- Is never well-rested.
-Diminished sense of self-worth.

[Scar has already been in this world for a few weeks, but this is the first time he has made any sort of public posting on his... Pokégear, they call it? That doesn't matter. He turned his back for one moment and some snake-like Pokémon had come out of the woods and attacked Skitty. And now... Now it isn't getting any better.]

Hello? My pokémon was just attacked by a... [Damn it all! Checking the Pokédex...] by an Ekans, and I think she's poisoned. I don't have a proper antidote on me, and nothing I do seems to be working-

[There's a rush of anger and a small note of panic in his voice. Scar hasn't come to quite believe yet that a pokémon attack can't be fatal, and if anything were to happen to this one, how can he forgive himself? He's days away from the nearest Pokémon Center. How has he managed to be so ill-prepared?]

I just need something. A fast solution.

Third Person Sample:
"Dammit-!"

Once again, Scar had slipped and landed flat on his backside thanks to the slick floors of the Ice Path. A tiny voice in the back of his mind told him that it had been foolish to try coming here, but he ignored it. That woman in the Pokémon Center had said that "trainers" of his caliber shouldn't be taking on this cave yet. That he should have more "badges" under his belt. But Scar had little interest in badges. He simply wanted to reach Blackthorn City.

That was, if he ever made it out of this frozen hell. A man (boy, really) several years younger than he stopped, clearly concerned.

"Sir, are you all right?" He reached down and offered his hand, but Scar didn't take it as he pushed himself precariously to his feet. He ignored the bewildered stranger and continued on his uneasy way, his pride more than a little wounded.

Scar pulled his jacket more closely around his shoulders. He wasn't built for the cold, at least not cold that lasted this long. Nights in the Eastern Desert grew frigid, but what about a night that never thawed? The Ishbalan had expected to be through this place in a few days' time without issue, but now he had gotten himself completely stuck. He looked down to the Pokéballs on his belt, and his frown deepened. Could they feel the cold in there, he wondered? He couldn't let them out into this, even if that were the case. It didn't take a master to realize that the creatures lurking in this cave were far more powerful than the young ones Scar carried with him.

Adjusting to this world was proving difficult. People fought with these 'Pokémon' as if it were nothing, yet all Scar had been able to see upon arriving was a bunch of brightly colored chimera. He could fight for himself if he needed to; using these strangely intelligent creatures to do his dirty work for him was nothing short of barbaric. Yet, it had quickly become obvious that he would need their help to make his way in this world. That was what had made him set out researching, and research was what had landed him on course to Blackthorn. Powerful Pokémon.

Scar dug the heel of his boot into the frost, craning his neck to look up the steep, icy incline that lay before him. It was foolish to continue, but he had already come this far. He turned to address the trainer who had offered him help.

"How much farther does this lead?"

"Right now, I'd say you're about halfway."

He nodded in silent thanks to the other trainer, and started up the frozen slope. Four more days. What were four more days, really, to a man who had crossed miles of desert on foot?

Character
Name: Ivan Raidenovitch Raikov
Series: Metal Gear Solid
Timeline: Portable Ops: After Snake rescues him
Canon Resource Links: wikia page

Personality: In a nutshell: "Raikov's just that kind of guy."

The unabridged version: Raikov is the kind of guy you'd probably want to punch or facepalm at. Due to the fact that he was Colonel Volgin's lover, the man is extremely spoiled. It's no surprise the two got along so well, seeing as they both strive to get what they want and can be extremely sadistic about it. Raikov is not afraid to act or treat people however he wants (eg: punching his subordinates in the face or insulting them for no reason), especially because no one can talk back to him about it, at least while Volgin was alive.

Because of that spoiled attitude, Raikov prefers to have others do his dirty work for him, especially when it comes to his life being in danger. Back at Gronzyj Grad, as soon as the alarm is sounded, he would a quick retreat to the restroom to hide. That seemed to be a favorite spot of his, considering the man is a glutton and has a weak stomach. Raikov is not incapable of fighting though, in fact he's rather good at it. (He has to be, considering he’s a GRU soldier.) He just prefers to avoid it if possible.

The man is also not the loyalist of people nor is very trustworthy. When CQC'd into questioning, Raikov has no problem spouting out his lover's weaknesses. Whether it's because he's a yellow bellied coward or he honestly believes this man couldn't possibly defeat the Colonel, who knows. That would later come back to bite him..

Another flaw of his is that he doesn't seem very detail oriented. (Or is atleast slow to pick up on things.) In the game, if Snake lays down food in the halls, Raikov will quickly run up to it and eat it without even questioning why food was randomly lying in the hallway or if it's actually edible. (Then again, the regular soldiers don't question why random porno mags are placed on the floors as well... Maybe it's a Groznjy Grad thing.) If Snake dons the scientist outfit along with the Raikov mask and bumps into him, Raikov at first is annoyed but then soon notices how... incredibly beautiful this person is before him. It actually takes him a few good seconds before he realizes that "wait a second, this guy standing in front of me LOOKS LIKE ME. This is not right!"

He must also have a soft side to him though, seeing as he is the only person Volgin truly cares about. It can't just be because of the good sex and that Volgin finally found someone willing to do so with him. (Although that's probably the main reason.)

After MGS3 and Volgin's death, Raikov seems to have lost a bit of his attitude now that he is no longer being protected by his precious Colonel and able to do anything he so pleases. He has been stripped of his rank and power and has no one, until Snake finds him again 6 years later. It’s unknown what happened to Raikov during those years but it’s obviously left him bitter as he’s very reluctant to join Snake at first, even going so far as to call him Volgin’s murderer. He is much more cautious than before and perhaps even a bit more independant. He has no one to rely on anymore, after all.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Ex-GRU soldier, which means highly skilled in firearms, combat/fighting.
+ He's a very talented artist. His usual style of drawing is figure/gesture drawing.
+ Hard working. (when need be)
+ A powerful crotchgrab.
+ Exceptionally good at seducing and manipulating men. (and women if need be)
+ Very good looking and prides himself in his appearance.
+ Considering he survived 6 years in the gulag then getting transferred to South America, he's tougher than he lets on.
+ Loves food and cooking.

- Raikov has no super special abilities seeing as he's a normal human.
- Abuses power.
- Would rather run and hide than deal with trouble.
- Flirts with every man ever.
- Has a general dislike for women.
- Spoiled brat.
- Prefers to attach himself to a powerful man for protection.
- Still hung up on Volgin.
- Quick to judge.
- Is a glutton with a weak stomach.

[The recording starts with Raikov looking down at the strange device in his hand. He's from the 60s – he doesn't know to properly work these new fandangled techno-gadgets. It's only been about a day since he first arrived.

There's yellow puff ball which most people would recognize as a Joltik curled up on his shoulder. Seems she's sleeping. Raikov curses softly before noticing the blinking light. About damn time he got the thing to record.]

Ah- Hello? Is this thing on...? I've been trying to figure out how these computer things work. It's bad enough I still haven't completely gotten battles or capturing Pokémon down yet...

[Plenty of trainers have probably seen Raikov scooping up Katya when she gets close to fainting and throwing a rock at the opposing wild Pokémon before running away or something equally as absurd.]

This is still all so much to take in...

[He sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose]

... And am I going insane or is my radio playing twenty-four-seven? I tried turning it off but the music won't stop. It's getting annoying. I can't be the only one having this problem. It's starting to interfere with my sleep and if I need to walk everywhere I can't afford to lose out on my beauty rest.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Third Person Sample:
Raikov stared at the yellow pompom that sat in his hand chattering away at him. He still wasn't quite sure what Big Boss had gotten him into... This wasn't the Soviet Union and this thing definitely wasn't a normal animal. Everything felt like it had happened so quickly. Big Boss finding him in that South American Prison and just randomly waking up in this strange place called Johto. I mean, having a pet would be nice... He was rather lonely. But... being a "Pokémon trainer?" He was having trouble wrapping his head around all the information that had been provided to him.

As he attempted to make sense of what he was reading in the Trainer Guide, he looked back to the Joltik. The Russian lifted the Joltik above his head and narrowed his eyes. How the hell do you tell the gender of something like this? The Joltik was far from amused and began to squirm between his fingers, her chattering getting louder. Finding it difficult to keep a firm hold on her, he picked her up by the scruff on the back of her neck – or what he assumed was her neck – and looked her in the eyes. Which ones was he supposed to look into?

He continued to hold her by the scruff as he checked his Trainer Info. The Joltik was registered to him and had a female sign next to the picture. Well, that answers that. After a few moments of inspecting the angered fluffball, he decided on the name... "Katya. That’ll be your name. Got it?" A simple but cute sounding girl name. The Joltik seemed to perk up a bit and chirped in response.

Raikov continued to read the Guide, reading over the part that informed him he could keep his “starter” in its pokéball. He honestly considered it for a second but she was tiny enough to ride on his shoulder or head without really disturbing him so he opted to have her out. It’d be nice to have some company as well. He attached the ball to his belt and placed Katya on to his shoulder. Katya scuttled around before getting comfortable and nestling herself against Raikov's neck.

At least she seemed to understand that he was her owner and hopefully would behave herself. After what felt like forever reading the Guide, Raikov let out a sigh and scratched his head. Battles... He was going to have to battle with the electric dust bunny resting on his shoulder? How could she even survive at her size? Then a rather depressing thought dawned on him: He was alone in this place and everything here was completely foreign to him. The animals, the technology, even the people felt different. Adjusting to such a drastic life style change would be difficult, perhaps even more difficult than the gulag. He felt like a man lost in time.

But there was one happy note to his sudden awakening in Johto: He would get a new start on life. He had no one left for him back in his world - well, aside from his parents. But his father probably disowned him after hearing he had been thrown into the gulag, thus now allowing his mother to contact him even if she wanted to. He tried not to think about it too much. No one here knew of his past actions or the reputation that followed him. If he looked at it that way, it felt like a weight off his shoulders. He didn’t have to worry anymore. Still, the Russian couldn’t deny wanting to find someone to latch on to like he had with Volgin. Someone to take care of him so he didn’t have to deal with anymore hardships. That was the life he wanted originally, before Big Boss ruined everything.

The negative thoughts were beginning to rile him up and he stood up in a huff, closing the guide and putting it into his backpack. He turned towards the sign that simply stated “ROUTE 29” and checked his map for a moment before speaking to Katya.

"Guess we should get going, huh?" Raikov said, gently scratching his new partner on her head. It was now or never. Katya trilled in response and moved to sit on the top of his head as he began to travel down the dirt road to Route 29.

FMA 2003

Episode 12

Episode 48

Personality:

Russell is confident to the point of being cocky and complacent. He assumes that because he’s fooled the population Xenotime that no one could possibly think otherwise. He’s very wrong, as Mugear has known all along, and it’s clear that he hadn’t planned for the real Fullmetal Alchemist to show up in town. Russell acts cool and calm when they meet, but it becomes very clear he has no idea what to do with Ed’s presence. Rather, he pretends to know what he’s doing, and continues his façade of the suave child prodigy.

This is not to say that Russell isn’t brilliant; he’s actually extremely intelligent for his young age and has a grasp on concepts of science and alchemy that would put an adult to shame. This however feeds back into his need to act like a different person for people. He constantly feels like he needs to prove that he’s talented and capable, and he took on the guise of a famous alchemist to back that up. Russell has a wealth of ability but finds it hard to gain the respect of others, especially adults. And because his parents are both deceased he finds himself having to be the both the older brother and family adult for his younger sibling Fletcher. So he feels both safest when he’s acting tougher and stronger than he is and there’s a sense that he has to be larger than life for his brother’s sake. Ironically he ends up being a rather terrible brother.

While Russell puts on a front for other people, it doesn’t take much to break through that mask. When he’s not trying to be something he isn’t, he’s very open with his feelings. He goes from grinning triumphantly to being torn up over Fletcher being doused in Red Water to moping about when Mugear detains them. His temper often gets the best of him (if his verbal and physical fights with Ed are any indication) and has an inclination to throw insults and fists before talking things out. As much as he thinks he’s in control of his emotions and actions he’s really not. He can be childish and petty, which isn’t surprising considering he’s only 13, but clashes with the mature act he puts on.

Russell is also extremely loyal and protective of his family. It’s his duty to his father and his father’s research that brings him to Xenotime in the first place, and the strong desire to finish the work on the Red Water and Red Stones pushes him to impersonate Ed and work with Mugear. He’s so focused on fulfilling his father’s dream that he is oblivious to the harm the Red Water project is having on both the townspeople and his relationship with Fletcher. He would do anything for his family, as he mentions that Fletcher’s safety is his first priority and is seen shielding him during the fight with Mugear. The work on the Red Water is not Russell’s passion per say; he’s so invested in it because of his love for his father, and then neglects not only Fletcher but his own sense of self. Ed points this out later that they should be out doing what they want to do, not following someone else’s dream out of a misguided sense of loyalty. It takes Fletcher getting hurt and then Mugear throwing them in the dungeon for Russell to finally accept this and move on.

He’s also stubborn and forceful. It takes Fletcher a long time to be able to call to his attention that the Red Water is poisoning Xenotime, and it takes Russell even longer to admit that this isn’t the right path for them. He has a tendency to dominate interactions with Fletcher who has a much more passive personality, and insists on him not using alchemy because their father didn’t want them using it; Though this obviously doesn’t stop Russell from using it himself. He’s unmovable on multiple points, like as he refuses to give up the Red Water project, or to come clean about their identities, and ectera.

As much as Russell has proven himself selfish and not above lying (and putting people in harm’s way, however accidental it might be) he would never do something that would directly hurt someone or kill them. When Mugear wants Russell to introduce the Red Water into the drinking supply of pregnant women he refuses and protests the idea, thinking it goes too far, as it undoubtedly fatal to baby and mother. And while he tries to hit Ed with the Red Water, he’s using it more of a scare tactic than truly intending to kill him. Admittedly this wasn’t a good idea and it didn’t end well, with Fletcher getting hit with it instead, but that doesn’t change the intent. In fact after the end of episode 12, Russell stays behind in Xenotime to help the people there. Partially this is to make up for what they did, and partially it’s one of the first things he’s chosen to do for himself, which is to use his plant-based alchemy to help people.

Russell also gets obsessive and excited over anything to do with science and alchemy specifically. This gets him in trouble later when the Tringhams go to Central and he tries to buy alchemy books using Ed’s identity. He has a tendency to fall back into old habits, especially when it could get him something he wants. His passion for alchemy borders on a dorky enthusiasm, which is no surprise considering he’s so talented. But he’s excited to study the science and learn more whenever he can and the Tringhams are shown at the end of the series to still be doing their own alchemic research.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

Strengths:

Intelligence. At 13 he has enough brain power to take his father’s alchemy research and improve upon it, which is in an area of study that adults struggle to have success in. He’s brilliant, though the “too smart for his own good” cliché applies here too.

Charisma. Russell is a natural born actor, as he conned an entire town into thinking he was the Fullmetal Alchemist. He’s a smooth talker and knows how to get people on his side.

Confidence. He’s confident in himself and his abilities, and this can motivate him to do his best in various situations and keep his cool in others. (Though of course this depends on the situation!)

Fighting skills. Not many people can go one on one with Ed and come out on the winning side. While he may have just gotten lucky each time they fought, he proved he can keep up with someone who’s had training in hand to hand combat.

Weaknesses:

Pride. He can be too confident, and his ego can lead him to be kind of a jerk to others.

Stubbornness. Russell just doesn’t know when to give up, even when his actions place the lives of people he cares about in danger.

Childishness. Let’s face it, he’s barely a teenager. But that doesn’t excuse the fact that he can get petty and mean with other people, throwing insults and snarky comebacks if he doesn’t like him. I’d imagine this could get him in trouble from time to time!

Temperamental and Obsessive. He can get moody and distracted by the little things and ignore the consequences and the dangers.

[So he’s finally got this little gadget figured out! (Don’t judge him, refrigerated trucks are big news back home okay.) And now being comfortable enough with the video function to use it, Russell is going to ask a question of the network.]

Okay, so-

[He lifts his Petilil up to the screen. She seems happy enough, with leaves swaying as she bounces back and forth, and he’s clearly gotten used to the whole Pokémon thing too.]

-when do they do this “evolving” thing? It’s not like Viri hasn’t been battling. [Quite the opposite, really. Those things really like to jump out at you when you’re trying to get from town to town.] But she doesn’t show any signs of changing.

I know it’s different for each species. [There are so many too how do you people keep track.] Anyone know what her trigger would be?

Third Person Sample:

This was so not okay.

It had to be a dream, right? Because what else could explain waking up in a bed that wasn’t his, being pushed out of the house by someone who identified themselves as “Mom” (but certainly was not his mother), and being followed by some… plant… monster… turnip. Thing.

“Petilil!” She said to him in a cheerful tone, but he was far less enthused than she was. What the hell was going on? It all happened so fast that he was left dazed and confused in an unknown town. Nothing was right about this situation.

His first instinct was to panic. But panicking wouldn’t do him any good, now would it? There had to be a rational explanation for all of this. There had to be.

“Okay, think about this logically,” he muttered to himself as the Petilil bounced in a circle at his feet, “Where the hell am I?”

There was nothing remotely familiar about the small town and smiling residents wandering about in the streets. It wasn’t Xenotime, and a quick look at the local trees and plants told him he was far too north to even be in the south of Amestris anymore. Besides, he was pretty sure it was summer when he last checked—it felt a littletoo cool out. None of it made any sense.

And then the sobering realization hit him; Regardless of where he was now or how it had all happened his brother was nowhere to be seen. It was one thing for Russell to be wrapped up in some crazy plot, but Fletcher’s safety was a whole other story. Even if Fletcher was home and safe, Russell wasn’t there, and that was unacceptable. He was not going to allow the only family he had left to think he had abandoned him.

Character
Name: Aerith
Series: Kingdom Hearts
Timeline: KH2, post Radiant Garden name reveal
Canon Resource Links: here!

Personality: At a young age, Aerith's home world of Radiant Garden was overrun by the Heartless, and she, along with Cid, Yuffie and Leon, fled her home to a world that existed solely as a place of refuge for those whose worlds had been overtaken. In the years that passed, she and the others spent most of their time learning as much as they could on the Heartless and Ansem, waiting for a hero with a Keyblade to help them restore the worlds, and helping those around them.

Regardless of being torn from the world she was born on, Aerith is a generally positive, calm, and caring young woman, and a nurturer by nature, generally seen healing the group during battles instead of battling the Heartless head-on. She also made sure that Sora and Co. didn't leave Traverse Town for the first time without a bit of munny and supplies. Additionally, Aerith is the one who provides Sora with the most powerful curative spell she can offer in Hollow Bastion, and she, along with Leon, helped to remind Sora that even when the barriers to the world are restored, barring them from seeing each other again, they'd have each other in their hearts.

She had been at the forefront of gathering information on Ansem, as she is the one who first mentions and discusses them with Sora. Additionally, when Sora, Donald and Goofy arrived in Traverse Town, she helped relay information on the Keyblade, its purpose, and the fact that the worlds had been connected.

Aerith is intelligent and intuitive to her surroundings, and especially to the people around her. She is good at reading into her friends' words and actions, such as Cloud's (especially Cloud's) attempt to leave to face his darkness without telling her. He obviously didn't get very far, and was a bit flabbergasted when Aerith called him out on his decision. But she had understood at that point that it wasn't something she could help him with directly; she could only help him indirectly by waiting, and expecting for him to return. Thus, she has a deep understanding of the people she cares about, and is usually able to discern what otherwise goes unsaid.

Aerith's iteration within Castle Oblivion was so intuitive that she was able to understand to some extent what was happening even outside of the boundaries of Sora's memories — enough so to give Sora a warning about his memories — though because she was created, in a way, out of Sora's memories, and how Sora views her, this attribute is likely exaggerated to some extent. She never really displays quite that level of mysterious understanding in the real world. However, this does suggest that Aerith has caught Sora off guard by figuring something out about him at some point, which would explain why he appears to have that impression of her.

Aerith has a light teasing side, which she displayed most prominently when saying "bon appetit!" to the DTD as she transferred a program on a CD meant to aid Sora and Tron in fighting the MCP. She will gently tease her friends, if only because flustering them can be entertaining, but she has never been seen teasing her friends out of malice. Her enemies, however, are a different story: see the MCP example above.

Despite being a bit more quiet and reserved than Yuffie, and Leon as well, in her own way, she is independent and capable of caring for herself in most situations, and is not afraid to, e.g. her miffed look when Leon expresses doubt about her staying alone to watch over the computer room by Ansem's office. She shines the most, however, when she is in a supporting role.

The quickest way to anger Aerith would be to threaten and/or harm someone she cares for, though she is not the type to act irrationally when presented with such a situation. She is more apt to help to heal when necessary, and offer advice and information on eliminating the threat with a group of others.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Intelligent
+ Resourceful
+ Generally a good judge of character
- One of Aerith's main roles in the Kingdom Hearts series is to seek and provide information to Sora and Co., and to the Restoration Committee. If she were without any way to gather information, there's not a lot she can offer to a group. She is at risk of being sidelined in certain instances — a mismatched Pokémon battle in the beginning against a Team Rocket member, for example — which can easily lead to her becoming frustrated and disappointed in her inability to help.
- Aerith is not very strong physically, particularly compared to the likes of Yuffie, Leon and Sora. She makes up for it in other ways, but if it ever comes to blows, Aerith would lose.
- Aerith is in most cases only as good as the information she has. That's not to say she's stupid, but in a complicated type of world with only limited information available, she has drawn half-truth conclusions before, or been subject to half-truths like everyone else. e.g. Ansem reports in KH1, not remembering Hollow Bastion's name in KH2. Basically, she's not the know-all-to-end-all that she's sometimes viewed as (Again, how Sora sees her in CoM).

Whew!

[ hiking around Radiant Garden is pretty much a daily ritual for Aerith, but hiking through forests and dirt paths? not so much. the feed starts just as she's plopped down on the nearest, flattest rock available to sit on, looking a bit worn, but not particularly too worse for the wear. ]

[ she certainly has to have a pokéball on her person, but it's no where to be found in the video feed. truly roughin' it, here. ]

They really aren't kidding about taking journeys here, are they? I don't mind all the walking, but... I guess I'm not much of a serious traveler.

[ there's a slight glint in her eye, paired with a perceptive smile. Aerith may not be up for constant world and city hopping, but she clearly knows someone who is. ]

Which brings me to a question, actually! If you had to pick a... home base, I guess, what town would you choose? It's where I'd like to head — and stay, if possible.

Third Person Sample:
Once upon a time, in a life thousands of miles separated from hers, there was another girl just like her in some ways, who probably could have simply spoken with whatever world she was on and gleaned further understanding of where she was.

Aerith's only tools were a largely competent grasp of how worlds work (Though, at this point, a brush-up on world travel wouldn't hurt. How did she even get here, anyway?), and one rule in particular: No meddling.

Sort of hard to accomplish when one's shoved out the door with one of a world's native creatures attached at the hip and with a demand to get out there and experience what life with Pokémon has to offer.

Traveling along the connected worlds and making friends with the air one breathes was Sora's specialty, not Aerith's. However, if she was going to figure out where she was — rather, how to get back to where she was before — she'd have to gear up and start walking somewhere. This tiny town was informative — this is Johto, there are hundreds of these "Pokémon" out there for her to find, to learn to care for — but in the end, it didn't really provide the answers she needed at the moment.

(It hadn't fully occurred to her yet, either, but "Johto" would probably be of interest to the King. Perhaps tracking down the city with as many books as possible on this world would be next on her to-do list.)

Of course... If she needed to get moving, so did her new companion, the giant snake who had stubbornly wrapped itself around a nearby tree and stared angrily past her, like she wasn't actually standing a few yards away in front of it.

It was suddenly very clear to Aerith how easy it was to just shatter the "no meddling" rule to bits, if she was going to play along with the world's rules. Suddenly, Sora's modus operandi made sense.

She smiled slightly, tipping her head in thought.

The Seviper hissed, but made no move in one direction or the other.

"You know... Picking a name for you is going to be a lot harder than getting you out of that tree."

Character
Name: Riku Replica
Series: Kingdom Hearts (Chain of Memories)
Timeline: Just before fighting Riku in the Twilight Town card world

Canon Resource Links: His KH Wiki page

Personality: First of all (as his name implies) the Riku Replica is basically a clone of an existing person, and a good chunk of his personality comes from that person as a result. He also, over a very short time period, goes through a series of personality ‘changes’ as a result of memory manipulation by Naminé, giving him a very confused personality when all is said and done.

Before the first change, he’s confident to the point of arrogance, stubborn and aggressive. He's horribly blunt when he talks, almost insulting if you don’t know him well or aren’t used to it. He knows that he’s a clone, but it doesn’t seem to hinder his ability to taunt anyone he thinks is weaker than him. However, he gets highly defensive if someone else mentions that fact, and is quick to reassure them (and possibly himself in the process) that it doesn’t matter to him. He demonstrates this very quickly, meeting the real Riku before anyone else in the castle bar the Organization members.

Also in his meeting with Riku, he differentiates himself by boasting that while Riku fears darkness and is reluctant to use it, he doesn't fear it at all and as a result is already much stronger and has the capability to become stronger.

He has his memories tampered with by Naminé after this meeting, changing him for the first time. He forgets that he's a clone, ridding himself of that anger trigger temporarily and also 'remembering' Naminé, who he had just met. He becomes very loyal to and protective of her and hostile to anyone who seems to be a threat. This includes Sora, who becomes a high-threat target in the Replica's mind, despite merely being a person of interest before (and potentially someone weak).

As a result of this, the Replica fights Sora several times, getting beaten and retreating each time. This reveals an aspect of the Replica's personality not shown outside fighting: the more the Replica starts to lose, the less likely he is to play fair. He's a sore loser, much like Riku, but has absolutely no qualms about fighting dirty.

He attempts to strike Sora when he's down after their battle, prompting Naminé to take action and knock him out with her version of a heart attack, which supposedly removes the fake memories she gave him. Later, it’s shown that this isn’t the case, because...

...It doesn't revert him back to how he was before, but rather gives him a more mixed personality. He still feels the same way towards Naminé, wanting to stay by her side and protect her despite what she had done, but doesn't resent Sora anymore, since his knowledge of Sora was based on the fake memories.

It's worth noting that the Replica tends react with anger to anything that confuses or upsets him, either physically or verbally, often breaking the “cool, confident”; mask he puts up (another similarity to Riku). These ‘tantrums’ can be triggered by anything from someone disagreeing with him to being confronted with something he just can’t wrap his head around.

In this vein, he's actually very reactive period. Anger, as mentioned above, but happiness and sadness also tend to be a little exaggerated as well.

(Note: Was in the game prior, but had not undergone a significant change in personality during that time. Mostly just gained more knowledge about Pokémon.)

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths:
~Physically strong - Slightly stronger than a normal kid his age, even without special abilities. Probably more durable as well.
~Loyal - If he likes you and trusts you, you're unlikely to get rid of him anytime soon.
~Determined - While he's willing to give up on something that doesn't entirely interest him, if he really really wants to accomplish something, it will get done, or he'll die trying. Pretty much literally, depending on the task.

Weaknesses:
~Horrible at hiding emotions - Mostly anger and surprise.
~Has very little life experiences and thus gets confused very easily about just about everything. He has memories of some things, but hasn't actually experienced very much of anything except fighting, which he knows very well.
~Quick to anger
~Stubborn
~Argumentative. Also doesn’t like authority figures very much, or anyone telling him what to do, really.
~Easily manipulated - Looks 17, has the social experience of a toddler, and the life experience of a newborn. It's not hard to convince him of certain things, or to do certain things as he's not entirely familiar with how everything works yet. See life experience up above.
~Can power trip if allowed to

First Person Sample: [Hello Pokéworld, do you like accidental posts filled with ranting? Do you like Torchics? If so, you’re in luck because this video feed has both!

That is, it’s currently only on because the owner literally tossed it on the floor and it’s filming upside down currently. Said owner is not currently visible, but his voice is audible.]

I wasn’t even gone that long! What happened to all my stuff? My badges, my money, my clothes...oh no, my bracelet! Where’d my bracelet go?! Imogen’ll--

[Something flashes by the screen and thuds to the floor nearby. A chirp follows that, and a Torchic’s head suddenly fills the screen.]

....Hey shoo, you’re not helpi--is that on?

I swear I'll find-- And abruptly the filming stops.]

Third Person Sample:

Cold weather was stupid. Rainy cold weather was also stupid. That lady calling him his mother was also stupid and twice as annoying the second time he had to deal with her, as she didn’t answer any of the questions he had pertaining to why he woke up in her house (again) and why did she keep lying about being his mother? At least she was cheerful while kicking him out of ‘his’ house.

At least it wasn’t snowing this time around.

And thankfully, whoever dragged him out of the Castle the second time apparently took pity on him and gave him a slightly more useful starter. She was a Torchic, according to the Pokédex entry, a tiny Pokémon he’d yet to actually encounter in the wild or otherwise and that looked to be nearly completely useless. However, she was a Fire type, and he discovered that she emitted heat--a sort of portable, feathery heater--and didn’t mind riding in his jacket. Win-win, he stayed warm, and she stayed (relatively) dry.

Unfortunately, he also discovered that she was afraid of other Pokémon and thus entirely useless when traveling between cities...and she was his only Pokémon for the time being, so he spent much of his first couple days running from Pokémon hidden in the grass and trees and trying to convince her to actually sleep and not spend all night making alarmed chirps at small noises. Only when he threatened to ball her did she quiet down.

For a while.

“Stop chirping, you're getting us weird looks,” he hissed at his new partner, for the dozenth time that morning. They weren’t the weirdest thing in Violet by far, but that wasn’t a very comforting thought to him. She chirped once, louder than before, then turned her attention to attempting to pick apart his jacket’s zipper with her beak.

“Don’t do that either! ...I guess that means you’re hungry? You don’t get to be picky, though, I don’t have a lot to spend right now.”

Character
Name: Terra
Series: Kingdom Hearts
Timeline: Taken from directly after he leaves Destiny Islands, having passed the Keyblade on to Riku, but before he spots Ventus traveling ahead of him in the Lanes Between.
Canon Resource Links: Bio at The Keyhole

Personality:
KINDNESS
Terra is the reason people invented the phrase “gentle giant.” The first thing you might notice about Terra is his physical size and strength, but the second thing you will notice is that he rarely ever uses his size or strength to intimidate others, especially not at a first meeting, and probably not ever unless they wind up on his shitlist. (It’s very hard to get there, but once you’re there, you will never, ever get off of it. But more on that later.) He speaks softly and carries a big stick; he approaches others respectfully and doesn’t cross their boundaries or crowd their personal space; and he isn’t often eager to pick a fight over diplomacy (keyword here is “often”).

From a young age (we’re not sure how young, but considering Terra doesn’t seem to have biological parents and considers his Master like a father, we have to assume near-infancy), Terra has been raised to be something of a paragon. Keyblade wielders use weapons of great power, and are charged to use them for the protection of the worlds—he describes himself once as “a peacekeeper, not a tyrant”—and therefore they have to train not only their bodies and minds for this task, but their hearts as well. Terra is kind, thinking first of how to not only protect others, but comfort them as well. He is especially drawn to the small, young, and/or weak: for example, after a mixup about some kids and the proper ownership of a pirate’s ill-gotten treasure, the kids spill the chest out by accident and lose the gold inside. Terra gets down on one knee to the children’s eye level, puts a hand on each of their shoulders, and suggests that they put their own precious things inside the chest, and that can be their treasure. no really that’s actually what he says what a mom I can’t belieeeeeve

Moreso than simple kindness, Terra’s greatest strength of character is his empathy, a trait he sometimes shows even more than his friends Aqua and Ven. Terra is always acutely aware of the ways in which he has failed, or come up short, and because of that, he often reaches out to others who are in despair or who have lost faith. “Strength of heart will carry you through the hardest of trials,” he once said to a distraught young girl who had had her one dream taken away from her, and his encouragement to her was returned when she stood by his side and refused to run away from the monsters harrying the ball-goers. With few exceptions, Terra assumes the best of everyone he meets.

Of course, that’s a trait that can get you into trouble, and boy does Terra get into trouble. Having grown up in an isolated environment learning how to be a dramatic samurai Keyblade Master, Terra doesn’t have a great deal of experience with people other than his friends and Master, and this has given him a very un-nuanced sense of the world. He tends to assume that any given person he meets has the best of intentions, especially if that person is in a position of authority. Since he comes from a tradition where a person would only become a Keyblade Master (an authority figure within the order, in other words) if they are not only strong but also a paragon of morality and wisdom. Throw him into the outside world, where lots of Disney villains are also persons of authority and power, and you can probably see exactly how his faith in others becomes a dangerous naiveté.

MORALITY
Terra’s morality is black and white, and when faced with moral ambiguity, he has a tendency to try and forcibly recategorize that experience into Good or Bad, Light or Dark. Most of Terra’s character arc and revolves around his struggle to reconcile himself and his goals and ideals with the fact that there is darkness inside him, as there is in every human being (who isn’t 1. a Princess of Heart, or 2. the victim of dangerous experimentation on the heart).

One of the most important things to understand about Terra is that he is harder on himself than he is on any other person. His dream is to become a Keyblade Master and to that end, he expects nothing less of himself than absolute perfection. This very obviously sets him up for failure. When Terra fails to live up to his own astronomical expectations, he internalizes it and blames himself, and becomes afraid that he really is a bad, unworthy person after all, and that he is disappointing everyone who loves him and believes in him. This causes him to be afraid of failing, and to doubt and hate himself, which are bad emotions that produce darkness in the heart. Rather than seek help and guidance from the people who love him, Terra convinces himself that he MUST conquer his own darkness alone, which is basically impossible because the source of his darkness is his own unattainable self-image.

If you read his character history above, or played the games, you already know that Terra does not ultimately succeed in his struggle against the darkness. His fall begins when he fails his Mark of Mastery exam due to his very fear of failure manifesting as darkness, which freaks Master Eraqus out so badly he decides he cannot yet name Terra as a Master. This failure rocks Terra to his core, not only because he failed to achieve his dream, but because the reason seemed to be linked to his absolute and total inadequacy as a person. Enter Master Xehanort. Xehanort convinces Terra that darkness is not something to be feared, but something to be sought out. (This is obviously Bad and has Bad written all over it, but Terra’s never been to TV Tropes.)

Terra’s oversimplified view of morality presents this logic puzzle as a choice between two options:
1. Master Eraqus is right, and Master Xehanort is wrong. Darkness is always bad, and you should feel bad. Terra’s failure to control his own darkness is proof that he is not only unworthy to be a Keyblade Master, he has failed his friends and his master, and is overall unworthy of their love and support.
2. Master Eraqus is wrong, and Master Xehanort is right. Darkness is a vital piece of keeping the world in balance, and it is no shame to succumb to such emotions or to seek such power. Terra is therefore a good and valuable person who ought to disregard Eraqus’s concerns about darkness.

Believing in option 1 means abandoning his dream and sinking into depression, so Terra starts floating over towards option 2, vacillating between both scenarios until these diametrically opposed worldviews rip him apart like a planet sheared in two by opposite gravity wells. Sadly, he never even considered that the real answer is option 3: Both Masters Eraqus and Xehanort are a little wrong and a little right. It’s possible for good people to have flaws, as well as for bad people to do some good things. Terra should probably stop beating himself up and start paying attention to his friends a little more, and this obsessive overfocus on his own flaws will stop being the source of that very darkness that he keeps beating himself up over.

With other people, Terra’s policy runs to “assume good until proven evil,” which, as stated above, has gotten him into trouble. That said, it’s also given him the chance to touch the hearts of others for good, such as introducing the concept of “friendship” to Experiment 626, overriding his destructive programming; or saving Zack Fair from being controlled by the dark powers of a god.

DARKNESS
As the story of Birth by Sleep progresses, Terra becomes more and more confused about what it is that he has to do to be a better person. The character flaw that specifically continues to drive him away from his friends and further into the darkness has been outlined above, but there are other flaws as well. Terra is particularly single-minded: when an issue presents itself, he will focus on it almost to the point of tunnel vision. It means he will obsessively pursue a goal or mission once it is brought to his attention, which is good in terms of determination, but it also means he may become blinded to details or to subtleties that might let him know there’s something wrong.

At the canon point from which I’ve taken him, Terra hasn’t yet been completely consumed by rage, but there lies within him an underrealized capacity for anger and vengeance. He has, at one point, grievously injured an opponent out of rage because he feared for the safety of someone he loved and respected – that error has caused him to believe he can never go home, because Master Eraqus would never have him back. To harm someone out of anger or a desire for revenge goes against everything Master Eraqus ever taught him. The festering resentment within him, against himself and his own failures, could easily be goaded into manifesting as displaced anger under the right circumstances, now that it’s happened before.

Terra is fiercely protective of his friends because he loves them, but he can sometimes fail to respect their own capabilities, especially in the case of Ventus, who grew up with him for the past five years while recovering from, effectively, this canon’s version of brain damage. Ventus has since made a tremendous recovery in large part due to Terra and Aqua’s care for him, but Terra has failed to recognize that Ventus is now as capable as he is of protecting and defending himself. Terra tends to see himself as a protector of the weak, and in so doing can blind himself to the fact that they might not need help in the form of a bodyguard or parent, but in the form of an equal partner.

When Terra gets angry, he tends to lose control of that anger—but it takes an astronomical effort to actually push him to anger. He’s very patient with others, and his single-minded pursuit of his goals can make it difficult to get a rise out of him even when you harm him. Example: Terra knows that the Queen (from Snow White) has a magic mirror that can give him information he needs. He also has figured out (contrary to what fandom would tell you) that she’s sort of evil. Instead of fighting her, he pretends to go along with her plan so that he can speak with Snow White and determine what kind of person she is. When he returns without having murdered Snow White and stuck her heart in a box like the Queen asked (because duh), the Queen flies into a rage and curses her mirror to trap Terra in a world of illusions and try to kill him. He overcomes the Mirror’s magic and returns to the world, finally getting the Queen to agree to give him the info he needs so he’ll go away and quit bothering her.

After all that nonsense, Terra thanks her, quite sincerely, and leaves. He’s not particularly mad that she nearly killed him and tried to get him to kill someone else. He’d already slotted her into the “Bad People” category, and figured he would just get what he needed from her and get out. Her trying to hurt or kill him was, at that point, totally expected. And he couldn’t just kill her because that would be meddling in the affairs of a world, especially if she herself wasn’t directly confronting him. (Also it’s bad to kill people.)

The point here is that to elicit real anger from Terra takes a lot more than just doing something horrible to him, or being a horrible person. He doesn’t waste emotional energy on people who aren’t important to him. Rather, it takes betrayal, or cruelty to his friends (or both combined), to get Terra in a rage. But once he is good and enraged, he will probably not come to his senses until he’s already done something absolutely irrevocable.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths: As the personality section describes, Terra’s emotional strengths are in his empathy for others and his overall patience. His determination keeps him from ever giving up, and he will always stand by his friends to the bitter end. Terra is also incredibly physically strong: he’s probably one of the most ripped characters in Kingdom Hearts, second only to Lexaeus and mayyybe Xaldin. He can run long distances without becoming too winded, can climb, jump very high and over long distances, and can do some hand-to-hand martial arts. He hits like a truck. A big truck.

In canon, he wields one of the longest and heaviest Keyblades seen. He can cast potent magic, mostly earth-based, going so far as to create massive earthquakes or summon meteors. He can also, on occasion, tap into his inner darkness to wield dark energy against his opponents, including his Shotlock specialty, Dark Volley, which shoots homing projectiles of dark energy. The Keyblade itself grants the usual power to unlock any lock, and he can also use it to transform into a glider by which he accesses the Lanes Between. He also has magic armor. Obviously, this whole second paragraph does not apply to Terra within Route.

Weaknesses: Physically, Terra’s size makes him slow. A faster opponent could give him a lot of trouble. He also has trouble dealing with long-range opponents (example: Braig) if he isn’t goaded into using Dark Volley. If he is goaded into using Dark Volley, he’ll probably hate himself later.

Terra’s greatest fear is hurting his friends, disappointing his friends, or just generally losing out to the darkness in his heart. He cares a lot less when it comes to people threatening him, but he’s fairly easy to manipulate if you threaten his friends, or if you have a more intimate understanding of how to push the right buttons with him. Or if you have good PR and he has no reason to think you’d lie to him or deceive him. Or, if you’re a good liar and don’t catch yourself in a contradiction or get found out. Ok, yeah, Terra’s fairly easy to manipulate. His rigid understanding of the world can also make it difficult for him to adapt to new situations at first, although once he gets to an epiphany, he’ll do fine. Like that time he had to ride go-karts at Didney Worl to defeat the Unversed. True story.

[ The PokeConnect visual feed shows the face of a young man. He looks to be around the cusp of adulthood, maybe nineteen or twenty, with messy brown hair and fair-to-medium-toned skin. His eyes are a warm, soft blue; less sky-colored and more like wildflowers. A sharp-eyed viewer might figure out from the angle of the trees in the background that he’s a fairly tall guy, and what can be seen of his shoulder and neck attest to his overall size. ]

I hope I’m not disturbing anyone with this message. Good afternoon.

[ Despite his build, his voice is softer and lighter in pitch than you’d instinctively expect. ]

My name is Terra. I’m a little... new around here, and I was wondering whom I might talk to about an urgent matter. Someone like... a scholar, or a magician. [ That urgent matter being getting his Keyblade back and getting off this crazy world, but he wouldn’t say that on a public channel. Perhaps there is a slight undercurrent of anxiety in his tone, although he is smiling as naturally as possible. ] You know, someone wise. You can contact me at this number or leave a message.

[ He goes to shut the PokeGear, but suddenly stops. ]

Oh, sorry, I forgot. If, uh. If anyone named Aqua or Ventus has been here recently, could you let me know? I - [ He pauses, almost on the verge of another sentence, his mouth still open, as if he is trying to work his throat around something he isn’t sure he can say. Then he shuts his mouth, coughs a little, and concludes instead: ] Thank you.

Third Person Sample:
It’s been an hour now. Terra hadn’t meant to be at this for a whole hour, it’s just that he sort of lost track of time.

This world is strange. That is, Terra’s been to a number of strange worlds before, but they all usually shared important things in common. But this world just seemed to defy all the usual rules. The music constantly in the air is an interesting touch. The world-wide taboo on physical fighting, hmm, okay. The entire economy, society, and ecosystem being built around a certain subset of the native creatures, now that is something worth talking about. But then there’s this.

There’s this ledge.

If you asked Terra if he’d fallen down a ledge, he would have corrected you. He jumped down the ledge, because he was in a hurry, and looking for Unversed. Intentionally. There didn’t seem to be any monsters (well, non-native monsters) in the area, so he decided to retrace his steps and grill that nice woman claiming to be his mother with some more questions about exactly when he arrived and why his armor was gone. Shortest distance between two points is a line, and Terra’s got places to be, so he intended to quickly climb back up the ledge, both for the speed and for the exercise.

And quickly found himself on his back, on the ground.

He’d sat up, after a few confused moments of staring into the sky, and rubbed the back of his head. Well. That was... weird. So he tried again, and this time he was paying more conscious attention when his head seemed to hit something (when nothing was there), and he’d slid all the way to the ground again. From a ledge whose top was level with his eyes.

Okay. Gloves were off. If Terra had his Keyblade, he’d have tried dispelling any Barriers in the area, but he hadn’t seen the familiar hexagonal lattice of power lines, so it couldn’t have been that. So he’s got to figure out what is keeping him from climbing back up. Now it’s just a matter of bewildered stubbornness. So he tried climbing a few more times, both slow and fast. Then he tried getting a running start and leaping over. Didn’t work. He tried putting his back to the ledge, putting his hands up behind him, and hoisting his body up so he could sit on it. He tried, once, backflipping.

So now, finally, Terra is forced to admit defeat to one more incredibly odd facet of this world: impassable one-way ledges. He dusts himself off, looks around him, and then pulls out his one Pokeball with the Golett inside that they gave him when he set out. “Let’s keep this between us,” he mutters into it.

Character
Name: Juniper Woods
Series: Ace Attorney
Timeline: post-game
Canon Resource Links: Wiki

Personality: In the very first case of the game, Juniper is described by the Judge as a "sweet, meek girl", and that particular phrase summarises her personality, really. Juniper is timid, quiet, and not particularly accustomed to socialising with others, presumably from her frequent bouts of illness preventing her from attending school regularly during her youth; as such, she has a knack of stuttering and pausing in the middle of or between her sentences during conversation, and she's shown numerous times in her sprites occasionally averting her gaze when speaking to others, likely because she's much too shy to hold eye contact with whomever she's speaking with for a long time.

But past her shyness, Juniper is friendly and polite, making it easy for her to befriend others. She is a very optimistic person who always sees the best in others and never their faults; she is aware that, yes, everyone has flaws, but she is more than willing to look past them. She is also very selfless and kindhearted, almost always putting others' best interests and needs before her own; after all, she cherishes friendship above all else, and in her eyes, a friend is a person who's loyal and true. That is exactly what Juniper wishes to be, so if there's anything that her friends need that's in her ability to do, then by all means will she do it. She's shown lending her friends moral support when necessary, motivating them if they're disheartened, and even giving them fruits and vegetables from her garden to them for snacks.

Juniper's love for her friends is unquestionable; as aforementioned, their well-being comes before all else, including her personal beliefs and values for justice and truth. When it comes down to protecting those she loves, she is willing to sacrifice those things for them. For example, she withheld accusatory information about her friend, Hugh, from her friend, Athena, who was defending her; if freeing herself meant imprisoning her friend, then she did not want to resort to those means. Her want to protect her friends went so far as to her wanting to replace Athena as her lawyer with another, Aristotle Means, who was renowned for the belief of "the ends justify the means" and would have more than likely forged evidence to ensure a win, and later even publicly confessing in court to a murder she didn't commit in order to prevent her accused friends from being imprisoned.

Though she may falter at times from the right path, ultimately Juniper is a responsible and honest person, and she always ends up doing the right thing. With some convincing from Athena and Apollo, along with her faith in them, she declines Means' offer to take her case, and she ends up revealing the information she had been keeping to herself. She upheld her title of student council president when she was enrolled in her academy, going so far as to act with a bravado, and executed her duties properly. Juniper strives to be a prime example that others will admire and follow, which is one of the reasons that she wishes to become a judge.

The other? She simply wishes to put an end to what is known as "the dark age of the law", really. This goes hand-in-hand with Juniper's beliefs; she strongly believes that deception and wrongdoing has no place in the court of law, those who result to such are unforgivable, and that only the truth and justice belongs, and she's willing to do whatever is necessary to ensure that she accomplishes her goal. It could be considered an idealistic goal, yes, given the fact that she and her two friends swearing to accomplish this feat alongside her are not enough to change humanity, but it's her main drive. It's an aspiration of hers that she's highly passionate about, therefore never will you catch Juniper willingly doing anything against the law, be it as minor as lying or as major as murder.

Her good standing in reputation and submissive nature makes her prone to being a target of manipulation or framing. Twice has it happened to her, and while it's certainly nothing she holds resentment towards, it's needless to say that she feels some immense stress when in the presence of the court. This also contributes to her passion to become a judge and eradicate false charges and evidence, but it also displays exactly how emotionally fragile Juniper is. She breaks down when she's under pressure, as demonstrated during the first trial when prosecutor Gaspen Payne was consistently badgering her with questions; she broke down in tears, went into a coughing fit, and got so lightheaded that she had to be ordered to sit outside in the lobby to calm down.

But even though Juniper may be discouraged at times, she's a relatively positive person who continues to look on the bright side of things. She never stays down for long, and she is always rejuvenated when she's in the presence of her friends, often saying that they've given her strength and hope when she had none. They're truly what's most important to her, and she'll do everything in her power to ensure that they're safe. If something were to happen to one of them, then she would be completely distressed that she was unable to protect them and she would continuously blame herself. She is truly someone who wants to help those she cares about in the best way she can.

Juniper Woods | Ace Attorney | Not Reserved | 2/2

[personal profile] suncrushed 2014-04-09 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Strengths/Weaknesses:
A true friend. Juniper is one of the most kindhearted people you could ever meet, making it easy for her to get along with others and for her to befriend others. She values friendship highly, and those who have earned the title of being her friend have her everlasting loyalty and trust.
Ever the optimist. Juniper has a bright air of optimism that doesn't ever dim. Though she may be discouraged at times, she always seems to return to the belief that even when things are bleak, so long as she has hope there is a way out of the situation. This optimism isn't solely focused on situations, however; she sees the good qualities in others before she does the bad.
Nature fanatic. Juniper's biggest fondness is nature, and as such, she spends most of her time gardening. She has extensive knowledge of the way fruits, vegetables, and other plants work from myths and rumours behind them to what benefits they have to those who eat them.
Student council president. When the situation calls for it, Juniper can suppress her timidness and put on a brave face. When she's like this, she's much sterner than before, and she seems confident in herself. It's almost as if she's a different person, if it weren't for the fact that this persona falters easily.
Judge of justice. As an aspiring judge, the truth is very important to Juniper. She doesn't believe in the "the end justifies the means" mantra; she thinks that people should be honest instead of deceitful. What she wants to prove is that lies and fabrication have no room in the court, and that only the truth and justice should be allowed.
Arts and crafts. Juniper is also very good at knitting and sewing, given the fact that she's always knitting a scarf whenever she refers to Apollo and that she mentioned in Turnabout Academy she made her Lamiroir costume herself.

Meek and mild. Though she's no doubt friendly, Juniper is also shy. She doesn't take the initiative in speaking unless it's absolutely necessary, but when she's around those she's comfortable, she tends to open up more.
I won't let you hurt them! That aforementioned loyalty of Juniper's can also get her into some trouble when she allows it to fuel her. She is not above withholding information, evidence, or falsely confessing to things she did not commit to ensure the safety of those she cares about.
Rather too trusting. With her little experience with human socialisation, Juniper is too naive for her own good, and as such, it makes her an easy target for others to manipulate her.
*cough cough* Juniper has a very weak constitution, making her susceptible to sickness. Because of this, she is very frail and cannot overexert herself, making it easy for those that are stronger than her to overpower her.
Emotionally fragile. Juniper cannot handle a lot of stress, and when that stress has become overbearing, she tends to break down. Her weak physique stretches out to her asthmatic attacks that result when she's nervous, frightened, or traumatised, and she has to inhale the sunflower atop her hat to calm herself down.

First Person Sample:
E-Excuse me...

[The voice speaking from the PokéGear is faint and hesitant, and the speaker's face perfectly demonstrates the nervousness laced within her voice. Her eyebrows are furrowed, and her eyes are quivering slightly; she honestly looks frightened out of her mind and a bit pale.]

I... I don't know who's listening, but for those who are, um...

[Juniper pauses, suddenly coughing into her fist, though the fit lasts for nothing more than a minute at the most. She reaches for the sunflower adorning her hat, breathing into it to calm herself down. When she's done, she looks rather sheepish about her recent spell, but it doesn't deter her from continuing to speak.]

My name is Juniper Woods. I just arrived here. I don't, ah, know where I am, or how I got here for that matter... I know that it's called New Bark Town, but...that doesn't really answer my question. I-If anyone could give me an explanation as to what is going on, then I... I would really appreciate it.

[The feed suddenly loses focus as Juniper kneels down, but it quickly returns, now settled on a small seed-like creature: a Sunkern. It looks relatively cheerful, beaming brightly at the camera. As Juniper speaks off-screen, she reaches out a hand to brush one of its leaves gently and almost distractedly. She's still confused as to what's going on, but she doesn't seem to be startled by the creature.]

I understand that...these creatures are known as Pokémon and that we're supposed to go on a journey of some sort with them, but... Um. Well, I-I don't know how to care for Pokémon. I've never...owned one before. This is all so strange...

[The last word of her sentence sounds choked, as if she's sobbing, but her expression doesn't seem to be tearful. Sunkern, concerned, seems to nudge Juniper's hand in an effort to calm her down. She flashes the Pokémon a grateful smile and returns to her feet, facing the camera towards her again.]

A-Ah, I... I'm sorry about that. But, um, like I said before, if...anyone could help me out, I'd really appreciate it. O-Oh! One last thing... I was wondering if any of you have seen or heard of my friends...? Their names are Athena Cykes, Apollo Justice, Robin Newman, Hugh O'Conner, and Phoenix Wright. If you've seen them, could you please let them know that I'm here? ...T-Thank you.

Third Person Sample:
Juniper tapped the pen against her chin thoughtfully, peering down at the Breeder's Guide she had been given at the very beginning of her Pokémon journey. Beside her was the notepad she had also received which she had been using to jot down breeding notes as she went through the book. She had just recently arrived to the next city, Cherrygrove, after its tedious and exerting three-day journey, and was now residing in the city's inn. Because of the trip, this was Juniper's first time looking through the guide, but...later than never, she supposed, and as far as she was concerned, it was never too late to learn more about her new situation.

She still didn't quite understand everything other than what her "mother" had told her in New Bark Town and the few tips she received along the way, but she wasn't as terribly confused as before. Three days of travelling alongside Apollo, which she had named the Sunkern in dedication of her flame, had helped her get acquainted to at least being around Pokémon, and she found that all her worries about caring for it had vanished for the time being. Now, if only she could understand the breeding portion of her journey.

She placed the pen down on the table, turning to face her Pokémon who was currently perching on the bed. "So, since you're a Sunkern, that means..." She reached for the notepad and glanced down at the few notes she took, gazing back up at the Pokémon. "...You also belong to the Grass egg group. ...Mm, so that means I'll have to...find other Pokémon in that particular egg group that you can breed with." She paused, a thought suddenly coming to mind that she hadn't considered before. "...Oh! If you're fine with that, I mean. I...wouldn't want to force you to breed, and you're not yet ready."

Of course, Juniper would be caring enough to consider the Pokémon's own feelings on breeding with another.

Sunkern didn't seem to mind the suggestion, however, giving an enthusiastic cry in response. Juniper couldn't help but smile, a light laugh escaping her lips. She stood up, walked over to the bed, and sat down beside Sunkern as she continued speaking to it. "Then if you're fine with that, I am too. ...B-But not now, of course! You're much too young." She doesn't dare mention that it's weak, too; not only would that be rude, but she's sure that it knows of that fact already. ...Admittedly, she feels a bit of a connection with Sunkern because of that fact; it was akin to her own physical weakness. If she were by herself, she probably wouldn't have been able to even make it to Cherrygrove, but being with Sunkern had given her energy to press on. Perhaps they inspired each other?

She doesn't dwell on that thought, though, instead continuing her words from earlier. "And I still need to finish reading the guide before I even attempt breeding... It would be a shame if I messed up. So, how about we train you tomorrow morning so you can level up a bit? Then, by the time that I'm ready to try breeding, you'll be able to help me. Does...that sound good?"

Sunkern gave another cry in response, one that Juniper understood as agreement. Her smile grew slightly, and she affectionately petted it, minding its leaves.

"Then... it's a promise! We'll do our best while we're here, okay?"

Character
Name: Demyx
Series: Kingdom Hearts II
Timeline: post death in Hollow Bastion
Canon Resource Links: Man this loser actually has story compared to when this first came out

Personality: First and foremost, Demyx is a Nobody - yes, nobody with a capital 'N'. While he may look like a normal person, he's missing the one thing that makes a person well... a person.

His emotions.

Some might call him heartless, but guess what? That's true too - despite how he acts, he actually doesn't have a heart. Sure he has a physical one, but it's the "spiritual" one he lacks. He'll laugh with someone, cry with them, get angry for a legitimate reason (or a stupid one), but it's not real. He acts like there's nothing wrong, like he's just an ordinary person, but deep down he knows it's a lie and that the emotions he "feels" are just based off of memories he had when he was whole.

HOWEVER, just because he's lacking emotions doesn't mean he's a dull boy! His memories and his behavior sets him apart from other Nobodies (both Organization members and lesser Nobodies). While everyone else fills out reports and go on missions to collect hearts to form Kingdom Hearts so they can eventually get their hearts back, Demyx prefers to sit on his butt with his trusty sitar and jam out. He wants his heart back just as much as the others, but he hates the work. If it's a simple recon mission (say, scouting out a new world or just watching the natives), he'll jump on it. If it's a mission that involves combat? No thanks! There's a good chance he'll either;

a) go to said world and play hookie
b) "convince" someone else to do it for him cough Roxas cough
c) fake an illness/injury
d) go hide in a closet/somewhere in the castle
e) be forced to do said mission
or g) all of the above.

This little tendency means he's essentially spitting in the face of danger considering Saix handles most (if not all) of their missions. Hell, even though he 'enjoys' recon his mission reports are pretty lackluster, which gets himself into trouble with ol' X-face. Is he afraid of him? Sure, but it doesn't stop him from goofing off. He's not above dropping his nice guy act around so-called friends on top of that; at one point Xaldin pesters him in his room and after commenting that people should at least knock, he gave him the silent treatment when he started to question Demyx as to why he clung to his human memories. Another time that he drops his façade is when Sora confronts him for the second time in Hollow Bastion and calls him out on his falsified emotions, and it's really not a good idea to tick off the guy who controls water, since... you know, it's kind of everywhere.

Again, even though he lacks emotion it doesn't mean he can't make friends! Because he remembers how to feel, it's not that hard for him to bond with people. Sometimes the friendships are as genuine as they can get, sometimes he'll play a person like a finely tuned instrument, but it's the thought that counts right? However just because he's willing to go the distance for friends, he's only looking out for number on--er, number nine. He's incredibly selfish when it comes down to the finer details and if he can, he won't hesitate to bail out if the waters start to look choppy. It's every Nobody for himself in the Heartless-Eat-Heart world out there and he's not about to let himself get killed because of some stupid mistake because of someone else.

Though thanks to his canon point he won't have to worry about dying thanks to... Well, he sort of bit the dust in Hollow Bastion, so that's... a plus? On the other hand Demyx won't know how to cope with genuine emotions right off the bat which is sure to cause some confusion and frustration on his end (and maybe for his superiors in Team Rocket) but that'll pass with time! Give him a few days weeks and he'll be back to being a dorky twenty-something year old who wastes his time playing music, playing pranks on coworkers and reading comics with the world's greatest mullet.

He's gonna need a replacement sitar.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strong Will - In order to have a shot at retaining their original form, they need to have a strong will. Fortunately for him, his "Other" just so happened to have that, so if he ever sets his 'heart' something? Good luck with changing his mind!
We Do Too Have Hearts! - Even though he's not supposed to feel emotions, it sure won't stop him from being friendly to others. He's not some antisocial jerk, he actually likes people.
Recon - Basically if anyone needs him to find out a dirty little secret or two? Send Demyx to do it. He'll always favor it over manual labor. He's pretty quick on his feet too so if he ever did get busted? He's gone.

Remember kids, investigating suspicious spots is the first lesson in Recon 101! (Getting somebody else to do it for you is lesson two).
Play That Funky Music Right - He's called the Melodious Nocturne for a reason! He's a pretty darn good musician, plus he uses a sitar in canon to help control his powers when he's forced to fight.
Manipulation - As stated above, he knows how to get people to do his job.
Grade A Slacker - Work? Sweat? That sounds totally gross. If someone can't find him, they should probably check the closet because there's a 95% chance he's there with a comic book. He'll do just about anything he can to get out of it (faking an illness, ditching, etc) and he's not above tricking people to go do his job for him. Sorry, Roxas!

Don't even try getting him to fill out work reports. It won't end well.
Lack of Emotion - Being a Nobody (even though he subscribed to the notion of having hearts), his emotions just aren't really 'there'. He remembers what they feel like, but there's still that nagging feeling of emptiness and uncertainty. The poor kid'll have to adjust to being in a glass case of emotions in Johto/Kanto, won't he?
✘/✔ Lousy Fighter - He'll cry and fuss into eternity that he's not cut out for combat, but if someone pushes him in the right direction and flips the wrong (or right) switch, he's a force to be reckoned with (even without his power over water). When in doubt, run!

First Person Sample: [Man, it didn't take this kid very long to figure out how the 'gear worked, did it? He must've dug through his backpack already judging by the mess strewn out across the room he's in and the rather frustrated Tynamo giving Demyx A Look in the background. Jeez, kid. Talk about being slob!]

So... I guess waking up to eels is a thing in this joint, huh? Y'know, I kinda thought I was dreaming until it zapped me and I realized that I, uh, I'm actually alive and all that jazz... [Just because he didn't have a heart didn't mean he couldn't feel pain!] N-Not that I'm complaining! I just wasn't really expectin' it!

[--he started this broadcast for a reason, didn't he? Oh! Right!]

A-Anyway, uh, if anyone can hear me can you do me a tiny favor and help a guy out? Maybe... I dunno, fill me in on where I am and what this little guy wants? And if someone could tell me what this thing i-- [He pauses long enough to grab a pokeball from the floor, but as luck would have it his thumb hits the button on the front just right and with a bright flash an oversized goldfish Magikarp pops out and smacks Demyx in the face.]

Uwah! The heck--

[Click!]

Third Person Sample: Three days.

Demyx has been under Team Rocket's roof for three days and he was already Fifty Shades of Done. When he came to terms that he was alive and whole after biting the dust in Hollow Bastion, he wanted nothing more than to run into town yelling and whooping to his heart's content. His heart. If someone told Demyx that he'd have a heart here, he would've laughed. Now that he actually has one? He'd be lying if he said he knew what to do with it.

Day one left him feeling confused and worried.

Day two left him feeling a mix of happiness and sadness.

Today, he was feeling frustrated and bored.

Unfortunately for him, his new 'partner' was keeping a close eye on him and gave Demyx a small zap whenever he started to stray from his task of passing out fliers of all things. It beat filling out reports like the other guys and doing hard labor in the field, but couldn't they have given him something a little less boring? Or a human partner? At least with the latter he could've snuck off and had some fun! ...Okay, maybe the reason why they didn't give him an actual partner was because he 'borrowed' a couple bucks from his mentor and replaced the sugar by the coffee machine with salt, but come on!

When he started to veer off course for the third time in five minutes, the Tynamo floating by his side gave him a stronger jolt which in turn earned a yelp and a small glare from Demyx.

"Jeez, you're almost as bad as Larxene with that crap! Gimme a break, would'ja?"

Another zap and Demyx made a sound between a whine and a growl. Why couldn't he have his Magikarp for this one? At least it doesn't bully him! Plus he could've picked the thing up and ran to the ocean with it to try bonding with it! But no, he had to get stuck with Bossy Britches. Still, it beat dealing with Saix barking orders at him every day and having to go out and fight Heartless. If he was being honest with himself, the zaps didn't even hurt that much.

...Maybe a couple more fliers wouldn't hurt. Then he could try convincing the little slave driver to take a break and maybe think of a proper name for it instead of 'jerk' or 'you'.

Preferably something without an X in it.

A synopsis of canon and character analysis of Schuldig from the ancient of days in fandom
Weiss Kreuz on Wikipedia

Basically, I'm just going to quote the synopsis I linked here, because they put it a lot more succinctly than I could:

"[Weiss Kreuz stars four youthful assassins whose team, Weiss] belongs to Kritiker, a private organisation set up to combat the injustices that slide past the eyes of the Japanese authorities. Kritiker has taken these young men with tragic, shattered pasts and offered them new hopes, new goals, and the chance at vengeance. Kritiker has shaped Weiss into "executioners of darkness, bringing judgement upon the brutal criminals who skilfully evade the law...". In a sinister and brutal world, they are modern-day heroes."

Schuldig is one of the villains of the series, who operates as a member of the evil counterpart team to Weiss, aptly named Schwarz ("White" and "Black" in German, respectively, because no one ever said this series was subtle). He, like the rest of Schwarz, are 100% cooler than Weiss in every way, including but not limited to the fact that they're all psychics.

tl;dr this is a series where a lot of people cheer for the villains, myself included.

Personality:

Schuldig: I wonder what else our leaders have in store for us. They're working us like the devil.
Crawford: How could they, if you're the devil?

All things considered, "the devil" is actually a pretty apt way of describing Schuldig — he's charismatic, he's cunning, he's unrepentantly evil, and you're probably not going to come out ahead if you ever make the poor life choice of striking a deal with him. He's a member of Schwarz, the morally bankrupt psychic assassin villain team of the first series, Kapitel (a list of adjectives that is actually necessary, given the preponderance of assassin teams that pop up in Weiss Kreuz overall), and consequently he is irrefutably two things: a nasty piece of work, and really good at what he does. Which is sort of unfortunate, considering "what he does" tends to be "advancing the machinations of hellaciously evil people, generally through gratuitous murder".

Given that lead-in, it probably comes as no surprise that Schuldig is, to put it simply, a really nasty piece of work. It's unclear from canon how much of that is his nature and how much is his nurture; though we don't know much about Schuldig's past, we do know that he is an alumnus of a top-secret psychic training academy called Rosenkreuz, which is itself the training ground for operatives of Esset, the shadowy organization that is the apparent Big Bad™ of the series. Esset's ultimate goal is to resurrect some sort of unspecified ancient evil, and Schwarz is perfectly happy to go along with this; at no time does Schuldig ever seem to have an objection to summoning up some variety of Eldritch abomination for the purposes of either destroying the world or ruling it with an iron fist, so it's pretty safe to say that pesky things like morality don't tend to bother him. Like most graduates of Rosenkreuz, Schuldig displays ruthless ambition, a penchant for mind games, and a general willingness to pull some pretty heinous shit without ever once batting an eye — all traits that were were most likely instilled and encouraged in him during his time and training at Rosenkreuz, as a means of making him making him more effective an operative for Esset.

And he is, indeed, a highly effective operative: despite a penchant for cat-and-mouse games that sometimes causes him to get sidetracked from his ultimate goal (and which tends to earn him admonishments from Crawford when he does), Schuldig is by and large the guy that Schwarz sends when a dirty job needs to get done. In the Schwarz team dynamic, Crawford is frequently the "face" of the team because he's the most polished and socially acceptable; that in turn means that Schuldig is often the one doing the dirty work behind the scenes. In An Assassin and White Shaman, which acts as a prequel detailing the pre-Kapitel history of the main characters, we learn that Schuldig was not only tasked with the mission of setting the bomb that destroyed the main character's house and killed his family, but that he went out of his way to talk with the boy for the sole purpose of screwing with his head. Later, after that boy goes on to take up a sword in an attempt to avenge his sister, Schuldig continues to show up in his dreams, taunting the boy about his guilt and sins and effectively encouraging him to kill himself because of it.

Hence, Schuldig's telepathy and his penchant for schadenfreude make for a particularly dangerous combination. Indeed, Schuldig maintains a running metaphor over the course of the series that people's thoughts "taste like honey", and that he enjoys the experience of being party to their despair through his powers. Unfortunately for Schuldig, though, that penchant for playing games does sometimes backfire on him. More often than not, it's because he got too caught up in toying with people and failed to consider the ultimate consequences of his actions — perhaps most famously when he and Farfarello cause the death of their employer's daughter, Ouka. Following that particular caper, their employer gets out a golf club and starts beating Schuldig and Farfarello about the head with it, and Crawford, benevolent team leader that he is, stands back and lets it happen for awhile because you know what, Schuldig did actually fuck up there. Good job, Schuldig. Enjoy that concussion.

For the majority of the series, however, Schuldig's effectiveness as a manipulator tends to earn him the amusement he wants. As noted earlier, he enjoys employing his telepathy as a means of getting the upper hand in his mind games, reading people's minds and quoting their thoughts right back to them as a means of setting them off-balance. He augments his natural charisma with psychic persuasion, poking at other people's thoughts and implanting suggestions to counter their natural doubts so that they'll perceive him as trustworthy and whatever he's claiming to be at the time. However, "trustworthy" is essentially never the case: Schuldig is an accomplished liar, and any story he tells is almost always calculated to produce the result he wants, rather than to advance the truth. Like Crawford, he'll cheerfully offer assurances to your face while silently counting down the minutes until he stabs you in the back, and considering Schwarz's perfect track record for stabbing everyone who ever trusts them in the back, it's something he does both frequently and unabashedly.

However, while undeniably an unrepentant asshole, Schuldig is also capable of loyalty, affection (of a sort), and even reasonable social function; his character sheet notes that he "acts neither crazy nor is insane, [and] gets along well with his colleagues and superiors." Around his team, who are perhaps the only people who've ever won his respect, he's pretty casual, albeit something of a snarky bastard. His character sheet also notes that he "draws a clear line between himself and those around him", which is particularly significant because it illustrates how Schuldig tends to keep a careful guard around the traits and emotions that could potentially make him vulnerable. His reasoning for this is probably twofold; it's likely that he learned to defend his vulnerabilities as a means of survival at Rosenkreuz, where they would've been used against him, but it's also equally likely that he's careful to control those vulnerabilities because of how his telepathy could potentially amplify them. Control is highly important to him, both for the sake of survival and just as a quality in general. However, as noted above, Schwarz has managed to earn his respect and his loyalty — and possibly even his trust, though it's the sort of trust analogous to that of the guy sticking his head in a lion's mouth at the circus: you're pretty confident that the lion's not going to maul you, but that doesn't mean you ever quite forget about those very sharp teeth.

All things considered, though, Schwarz functions as a fairly comfortable unit, and when he's with them, some of the more casual and human aspects of Schuldig tend to come out. He and Crawford banter frequently throughout the series, trading quips and occasionally jabbing at each other (which in turn usually results in some good-natured complaining on Schuldig's part). He's friendly toward and willing to humor Farfarello, which is something of a miracle in itself when you consider that Farfarello is essentially a fanatical god-hating murder machine who can't feel pain and has a strong attachment to bladed weapons — yet they seem to get along. And while he has his moments of harassing Nagi just for the sake of displaying the fact that he sometimes has the maturity of a two-year-old, it's pretty clear that he does care about their youngest member, and maintains an odd but fierce sort of possessive affection for him. Schwarz is, in a sense, all that Schuldig really has in the world, and they are undoubtedly his — regardless of whether they're orchestrating the slaughter of fifty thousand people, or simply having a lively debate over who gets command of the remote control or what to order for takeout that night.

So, in a nutshell, who is Schuldig? He's a twenty-two year old German kid who proves to be one of the most powerful telepaths in existence by the end of Kapitel; he's a survivor of a training academy where ruthlessness was a virtue and the way to get ahead was by throwing some other poor sucker under the bus to do it. He's the second-in-command of Schwarz, a fearsome and impeccably-functioning assassin team. He's a killer, a manipulator, and a firm believer in schadenfreude. And he's not just a guy happy to watch the world burn; he's the guy who'd stop off at the corner store and bring marshmallows to the party.

People like Schwarz know how to survive, we're told in the last episode of canon. And this devil called Schuldig is no exception.

Character
Name: Wade Wilson/Deadpool
Series: Marvel 616
Timeline: Bullseye part 2: Let the healing begin
Canon Resource Links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadpool

Personality: Deadpool likes to act like he is shallow. Nothing more than a murderer for hire, a sell sword who gives his abilities to the highest bidder. He likes anyone who’s attractive, big guns, big swords and fancy weapons. He acts stupid, cracks jokes and generally struts around acting like he’s gods gift to the world, frequently talking about how amazing he is and how good he is at his job. This, however, like his mask, is just something he wears. Something to hide the real person under it, all the real damage and scars that make up Wade Wilson.

Wade Wilson is a man that is suffering from cancer. One upon a time he was too afraid to die, so he let the Weapon X program play with his genetic code and fill it with Wolverine’s DNA. It gave him the ability to regenerate, but did not cure his cancer. It also exacerbated the cancer, causing it to spread to every tissue in his body. The illegal tests done on him drove him impossibly insane, and Wade is really the shattered shadow of a man. He is in constant pain, and his body is always in flux, healing and degenerating at the same time. He cannot die from cancer, but if he is cured of it, the regeneration will kill him. If his regeneration is gone, he will also die. At this point in his life, he thinks of himself as a hideous monster, and feels deep shame about his body. He hides it under acting like he’s incredible, and aggressively flirting with women and men. He doesn’t expect anything to come of it though, considering himself too far gone for anyone other than a select few to actually love.

Deadpool is not well liked within his universe either, and he knows it. Even Deadpool views himself as expendable, and treats himself as such. He puts himself into impossibly dangerous situations, regularly challenges death, and takes an incredible amount of punishment. Nothing seems to phase him, because the one thing he wants is to die. He feels as if death is the only escape for him, and pretty much hates his life more than anyone else on the planet hates it. While he has been given the chance to die several times, he has passed up those chances time and time again, because despite everything, he still feels like he is needed in the world, and actually does have some small sense of responsibility. He has things he still has to do, even if he thinks he’ll have it better on the other side. He knows no one likes him, and lives a lonely life in his apartment, figuring he’ll be that way for the rest of eternity.

He does have a softer, more tender side. Deadpool, though he hates his body and is ashamed of it, is very confident in his masculinity, and isn’t afraid to show his girly side when it dares to come out. He cross dresses shamelessly, and has been seen in a variety of skirts and dresses, including a mini skirt and thong, a wig, and a Marilyn Monroe dress and wig. He watches Maude and soap operas, and openly talks about it, his favorite actress is Bea Arthur, and he flirts openly with men, telling Thor that he found him incredibly attractive, and trying to get Spiderman to come home with him. Deadpool is impossible to shame when it comes to being a man, because he is well aware that all those other things aside, he is probably the most masculine person in the room, considering he’s 6‘4“ and ripped. Deadpool doesn’t care about doing battle in dresses, might even prefer it, and doesn’t care who sees him.

He is very keyed in to pop culture and television, and may constantly phase in and out of the forth wall. Deadpool knows he’s a comic book character after all. He may recognize people outside of his own canon, and make a comment about it, or launch into a fan boy ramble about something else. He has super hero underwear, he participates in hero worship and he loves to talk about his favorite shows and video games. While he was being experimented on, he immersed himself in pop culture and television and video games, and while he was escaped and rebuilding himself, he hung out and watched television some more. As well as being an avid follower of popular TV shows, Deadpool cracks jokes almost constantly through his battles and in conversation, apparently incapable of being serious for more than five minutes on a normal basis. It’s usually rare that he’s even lucid, and he just kind of walks through life in a constant state of wacky denial, living like a teenager on his own in his apartment. Deadpool is essentially immature and doesn’t care about almost everything, and one would be hard pressed to get him to act like a responsible adult. Deadpool only acts responsible when things get too heavy for him to take, and since that almost never happens, he’s just usually a smack talking asshole.

Deadpool acts like a big, overgrown teenager, and acts like he loves every minute of it, but he’s deeply damaged on the inside, past the point of being a functional human being. He can barely even pretend to be normal anymore. He’s a mess, and he’s accepted that. Now he just does whatever he wants, sometimes the good guy, sometimes bad. Deadpool plays by his own rules, and refuses to bend to anyone else. He might be alone for the rest of time, but at least no one will ever make him do anything again.

Strengths/Weaknesses: Strengths: Well trained in hand to hand combat: Deadpool has learned several different kinds of hand to hand combat over all the years he’s been a mercenary. He’s pretty dangerous with just his limbs alone. He doesn’t need a weapon in order to take someone out.

Trained in weapons: Even improvised weapons such as hammers and sticks.

Quick thinker: Deadpool can come up with a plan on the fly and then execute it brilliantly. From saving a kidnapped victim to breaking to a house undetected, he’s a competent man who knows what he’s doing.

Weaknesses: Insane: Deadpool lost his mind years ago. He hears voices, he hallucinates, he takes wild risks that could potentially kill him, and he never seems to care.

Low self esteem: Deadpool hates himself. No one hates Deadpool as much as Deadpool hates Deadpool. He doesn’t like who he’s become, he doesn’t like the way he looks, the only thing he likes about himself is how competent he is.

Constant Pain: Deadpool is in a constant state of pain due to his cancer. There is hardly ever a moment where he doesn’t hurt, and without the healing factor it will heavily impede his movements.

Samples
First Person Sample: Hey I got a problem with one of my animals. Pokemon. Whatever. These things.

[Deadpool picks up a small, pink puffball. It isn’t moving, but it’s clear it’s alive, just completely unresponsive to anything]

I found this giant ass butterfly in a field so I went to go kick the shit out of it. Like a dumbass, I sent out this one because I thought it could just sing it into a coma. Anyway, giant ass butterfly, hereon known as the GAB, sneezes on it or something and it just conks out. Now my powder puff is in a coma and it won’t wake up. I’ve exhausted all other attempts to wake it up, trust me I’ve tried almost everything short of blowing something up. This thing isn’t moving. Someone tell me how to wake my killer powder puff up before I start punching people.

Third Person Sample: It was hard, being just... Wade Wilson here. He still told everyone his name was Deadpool, but without the suit it just didn’t feel the same. He pulled his hat down over his face a little, kicking his feet up on a stump. It was hard not having an apartment to go back to either. Normally he’d crash at a pokemon center, but... Well there wasn’t one close by, and it was dark now. Looked like it was just going to be him and the campfire tonight. At least it wasn’t cold out.

The rabbit, buneary the little pokedex called it, Mimi as Deadpool called it, was asleep next to him, covered in the merc’s jacket to keep from getting chilly at all. He didn’t disturb it, staring into the fire quietly as he mulled over what he’d done so far in the world. It was strange, to not have a weapon with him. No knives, no guns, nothing. He’d armed himself with a mallet and a large stick, but it wasn’t as comfortable as having a gun. But so far this world was... peaceful. Quiet. It didn’t need a super hero running around trying to save it. Sure there were a few bad eggs but they didn’t seem interested in killing people. Just stealing pokemon. And Deadpool could handle a few two bit pokemon thieves. If his pokemon didn’t do the job, his fists would work just as fine.

He cracked his knuckles idly, kicking another branch into the fire. He didn’t know how to act with things so... peaceful here. Where the most dangerous thing was an animal he could eventually just control and tell what to do. How did this work? How was he supposed to be? How could he keep going without the violence? This place was... it was too nice. Too good for someone like him. It was like being plunked down into a calm little slice of heaven, just him and these animals that he could devote himself to. Without looking, he reached down to stroke his thick fingers over Mimi’s head, scratching behind an ear. She cooed in her sleep, but didn’t move. How could someone who only knew war... exist where there was none? Be in a place that had no need for even the simplest of weapons.

He sighed. He wasn’t going to sleep well tonight, not with these thoughts floating around in his head. But he wasn’t about to leave Mimi for a walk or wake her up. Let the thing sleep, she had a lot of work to do tomorrow. Deadpool- Wade... Would think of something. He’d manage in this world, somehow, some way. He was made to survive, he’d do it.
