Personality:

Russell is confident to the point of being cocky and complacent. He assumes that because he’s fooled the population Xenotime that no one could possibly think otherwise. He’s very wrong, as Mugear has known all along, and it’s clear that he hadn’t planned for the real Fullmetal Alchemist to show up in town. Russell acts cool and calm when they meet, but it becomes very clear he has no idea what to do with Ed’s presence. Rather, he pretends to know what he’s doing, and continues his façade of the suave child prodigy.

This is not to say that Russell isn’t brilliant; he’s actually extremely intelligent for his young age and has a grasp on concepts of science and alchemy that would put an adult to shame. This however feeds back into his need to act like a different person for people. He constantly feels like he needs to prove that he’s talented and capable, and he took on the guise of a famous alchemist to back that up. Russell has a wealth of ability but finds it hard to gain the respect of others, especially adults. And because his parents are both deceased he finds himself having to be the both the older brother and family adult for his younger sibling Fletcher. So he feels both safest when he’s acting tougher and stronger than he is and there’s a sense that he has to be larger than life for his brother’s sake. Ironically he ends up being a rather terrible brother.

While Russell puts on a front for other people, it doesn’t take much to break through that mask. When he’s not trying to be something he isn’t, he’s very open with his feelings. He goes from grinning triumphantly to being torn up over Fletcher being doused in Red Water to moping about when Mugear detains them. His temper often gets the best of him (if his verbal and physical fights with Ed are any indication) and has an inclination to throw insults and fists before talking things out. As much as he thinks he’s in control of his emotions and actions he’s really not. He can be childish and petty, which isn’t surprising considering he’s only 13, but clashes with the mature act he puts on.

Russell is also extremely loyal and protective of his family. It’s his duty to his father and his father’s research that brings him to Xenotime in the first place, and the strong desire to finish the work on the Red Water and Red Stones pushes him to impersonate Ed and work with Mugear. He’s so focused on fulfilling his father’s dream that he is oblivious to the harm the Red Water project is having on both the townspeople and his relationship with Fletcher. He would do anything for his family, as he mentions that Fletcher’s safety is his first priority and is seen shielding him during the fight with Mugear. The work on the Red Water is not Russell’s passion per say; he’s so invested in it because of his love for his father, and then neglects not only Fletcher but his own sense of self. Ed points this out later that they should be out doing what they want to do, not following someone else’s dream out of a misguided sense of loyalty. It takes Fletcher getting hurt and then Mugear throwing them in the dungeon for Russell to finally accept this and move on.

He’s also stubborn and forceful. It takes Fletcher a long time to be able to call to his attention that the Red Water is poisoning Xenotime, and it takes Russell even longer to admit that this isn’t the right path for them. He has a tendency to dominate interactions with Fletcher who has a much more passive personality, and insists on him not using alchemy because their father didn’t want them using it; Though this obviously doesn’t stop Russell from using it himself. He’s unmovable on multiple points, like as he refuses to give up the Red Water project, or to come clean about their identities, and ectera.

As much as Russell has proven himself selfish and not above lying (and putting people in harm’s way, however accidental it might be) he would never do something that would directly hurt someone or kill them. When Mugear wants Russell to introduce the Red Water into the drinking supply of pregnant women he refuses and protests the idea, thinking it goes too far, as it undoubtedly fatal to baby and mother. And while he tries to hit Ed with the Red Water, he’s using it more of a scare tactic than truly intending to kill him. Admittedly this wasn’t a good idea and it didn’t end well, with Fletcher getting hit with it instead, but that doesn’t change the intent. In fact after the end of episode 12, Russell stays behind in Xenotime to help the people there. Partially this is to make up for what they did, and partially it’s one of the first things he’s chosen to do for himself, which is to use his plant-based alchemy to help people.

Russell also gets obsessive and excited over anything to do with science and alchemy specifically. This gets him in trouble later when the Tringhams go to Central and he tries to buy alchemy books using Ed’s identity. He has a tendency to fall back into old habits, especially when it could get him something he wants. His passion for alchemy borders on a dorky enthusiasm, which is no surprise considering he’s so talented. But he’s excited to study the science and learn more whenever he can and the Tringhams are shown at the end of the series to still be doing their own alchemic research.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

Strengths:

Intelligence. At 13 he has enough brain power to take his father’s alchemy research and improve upon it, which is in an area of study that adults struggle to have success in. He’s brilliant, though the “too smart for his own good” cliché applies here too.

Charisma. Russell is a natural born actor, as he conned an entire town into thinking he was the Fullmetal Alchemist. He’s a smooth talker and knows how to get people on his side.

Confidence. He’s confident in himself and his abilities, and this can motivate him to do his best in various situations and keep his cool in others. (Though of course this depends on the situation!)

Fighting skills. Not many people can go one on one with Ed and come out on the winning side. While he may have just gotten lucky each time they fought, he proved he can keep up with someone who’s had training in hand to hand combat.

Weaknesses:

Pride. He can be too confident, and his ego can lead him to be kind of a jerk to others.

Stubbornness. Russell just doesn’t know when to give up, even when his actions place the lives of people he cares about in danger.

Childishness. Let’s face it, he’s barely a teenager. But that doesn’t excuse the fact that he can get petty and mean with other people, throwing insults and snarky comebacks if he doesn’t like him. I’d imagine this could get him in trouble from time to time!

Temperamental and Obsessive. He can get moody and distracted by the little things and ignore the consequences and the dangers.

First Person Sample:

[So he’s finally got this little gadget figured out! (Don’t judge him, refrigerated trucks are big news back home okay.) And now being comfortable enough with the video function to use it, Russell is going to ask a question of the network.]

Okay, so-

[He lifts his Petilil up to the screen. She seems happy enough, with leaves swaying as she bounces back and forth, and he’s clearly gotten used to the whole Pokémon thing too.]

-when do they do this “evolving” thing? It’s not like Viri hasn’t been battling. [Quite the opposite, really. Those things really like to jump out at you when you’re trying to get from town to town.] But she doesn’t show any signs of changing.

I know it’s different for each species. [There are so many too how do you people keep track.] Anyone know what her trigger would be?

Third Person Sample:

This was so not okay.

It had to be a dream, right? Because what else could explain waking up in a bed that wasn’t his, being pushed out of the house by someone who identified themselves as “Mom” (but certainly was not his mother), and being followed by some… plant… monster… turnip. Thing.

“Petilil!” She said to him in a cheerful tone, but he was far less enthused than she was. What the hell was going on? It all happened so fast that he was left dazed and confused in an unknown town. Nothing was right about this situation.

His first instinct was to panic. But panicking wouldn’t do him any good, now would it? There had to be a rational explanation for all of this. There had to be.

“Okay, think about this logically,” he muttered to himself as the Petilil bounced in a circle at his feet, “Where the hell am I?”

There was nothing remotely familiar about the small town and smiling residents wandering about in the streets. It wasn’t Xenotime, and a quick look at the local trees and plants told him he was far too north to even be in the south of Amestris anymore. Besides, he was pretty sure it was summer when he last checked—it felt a littletoo cool out. None of it made any sense.

And then the sobering realization hit him; Regardless of where he was now or how it had all happened his brother was nowhere to be seen. It was one thing for Russell to be wrapped up in some crazy plot, but Fletcher’s safety was a whole other story. Even if Fletcher was home and safe, Russell wasn’t there, and that was unacceptable. He was not going to allow the only family he had left to think he had abandoned him.
