APPLICATIONS!
Currently: Closed!
Route 29 has closed as of May 30th. For the continuation of the game, please visit [community profile] victory_road!

Applications will be normally checked during the weekend following the first and third Sunday of each month unless otherwise stated, and we will allow one application per person during one application cycle. Remember, the most characters one player can have at a time is currently set at five.

Applications received after 11:59 PM EST on Saturday of the first and third weekend of each month will be checked the following app weekend unless otherwise stated.

We now ask that potential applicants post their application in comments rather than linking. If their application contains explicit references to 'hard' spoilers (character death, unforeseen plot twists, big reveals, he was evil all along etc), players should put the application in their own journal or their character's journal and link it, making sure to mention the presence of spoilers within. For further clarification on our spoilers policy and whether or not your application needs to be linked, please check this page. Thank you for your cooperation!

The comment character limit on dreamwidth is 16,000 characters so apps no longer need to be split into multiple comments; however this is at players' discretion.

Please use the form below and post your application in comments rather than linking if you can. If you have any questions, feel free to ask either of the mods. You can reach us through emails, IMs, or PMs.

A reminder for those waiting to hear back, please don't be worried if we skip yours while going through them. It only means we needed a little more time to research!

Character
Name: Judith
Series: Tales of Vesperia
Timeline: Post - Game.
Canon Resource Links: canon wikipedia page ; judith's wikipedia page

Personality: This lone lancer-turned-Brave Vesperia guildmate is a bit of an enigma to most people she meets, and with very good reason. Calm, decisive, and even slightly cryptic, Judith is a combination of smooth operator and mature woman rolled into one.

The first thing to notice about Judith is that she’s extremely calm. Often the holder of a rather composed smile and level voice, there’s not much you can discern about her mood from just her words alone. There’s very little that gets Judith upset and even less that makes her visibly worried, and she’ll often tease you with the same voice and expression she uses to threaten you with (jokingly). It’s hard to tell when she’s being serious or not because of this, which is a bit of a problem due to the fact that… Judith is crazy playful. Most of the words that come out of her mouth are teasing, and more of her dialog in-game consists of harmless jabs at the party and inconsequential flirting. From that, you can probably tell that her unreadable actions are often the source of major confusion. She enjoys that! It's just one of the things that makes Judith Judith.

Of course, that's not to say she is incapable of being serious. In fact, she might be one of the more mature characters in game. There's a deep conviction to goals that one would be surprised to hear about from her carefree behavior, but it is there. She's often the decisive one in the group – being part of the first few to accept the necessary steps she must make, and come to terms with the path that she must ultimately walk. It's rare that she voices these feelings, however, and even more rare that she explains them, which makes her a bit of an unpredictable character. She's not used to having companionship, being alone for most of her life, so being able to depend on others is a bit of a new thing to her.

Her constant solo-behavior means she's also very used to doing things alone. As a result, Judith can be a bit withdrawn when it comes to what she's actually feeling or doing. She's not one to outright lie about her situation (she's stated herself she's not very good at lying), but she is one to... well, not mention things. Judith is completely capable of caring for herself, and she's used to that. She's not completely comfortable asking for help when worse comes to worst, but it's something that she's getting better at. This "lone wolf" behavior is something she shares with the protagonist, Yuri, and it might be part of the reason why they get along so well.

Something else Yuri and Judith share is that they're... well. Kind of impulsive characters. There's a whole skit in-game dedicated to her juggernaut tendencies and, to drive the point further, Judith runs off to attack a monster at the end of it. Of course, she doesn't take this to an extremity – Judith won't run into a life-threatening situation without doing a bit of analysis, but little problems that she can handle will often get handled in a moment's notice. Not so threatening looking monster in the distance? Judith will handle it. Big dude bullying small dude? Judith will handle it. Calamity threatening to destroy the world? Judith will think about it a little, but she'll handle it. There's a bit of a pattern in the way that she handles issues, and that's through physical force. Though Judith is an intellectual and perceptive character, she prefers to solve issues with her lance rather than her books, which explains her impulsiveness. Judith is by far more of a doer than a thinker, even if she does the thinking thing well. She just can't stand by idly while things happen around her, and it's because of this that she dives into things headfirst.

Still, for all her running around, Judith is still an extremely good friend. She's not quick to trust or quick to befriend, but Judith values the people she allies herself with a whole lot, and she'll help them at a moment's notice. You can be sure that if your friend is Judith, you'll be subjected to her shocking blunt comments and straightforward behavior, relentless teasing, and playful flirting. But at least you'll be well-fed, and have a very capable hand on your side.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

o independence ; Judith is the type that can--very efficiently--take care of herself. While she hits it off well with people, it takes a while for any form of an intricate relationship to form. Even after this, however, she will never really depend on people. Most of the time, she's the one being depended on, and if she comes to trust someone it's as an equal. She's very strong, in terms of both confidence and emotional stability.
o balance ; Judy is in fact very, very zen and not one for extremes. She's sociable but not overly naive, realistic while being optimistic. This means she's very capable of seeing things with a level head and with as little bias as possible. Yet another reason why she's so very straightforward!
o strong-willed ; breaking Judith's will is difficult, perhaps even impossible. She tends to take any attempts at that with either a dangerous smile or a returned fire. In general, however, Judith's set to goals she makes and hardly wavers.

x unreadable ; Judith's the type of character to consistently hide her true emotions behind a poker-face. Her true opinion can shine through in some things she displays as jokes, which can make it kind of difficult to take what she says at face-value.
x isolation ; Judith's been alone for a long duration of her life, which means she hasn't had people as company for her entire life. She doesn't have difficulty socializing with people, per se, but what she considers normal and what other people consider normal can sometimes be at odds.
x compulsive ; While Judith is intelligent, she can be a bit compulsive when it comes to getting into fights. She'd much rather act instead of think about things, which can sometimes cause a bit of trouble.

Samples
First Person Sample: [ and today on the network there is simply a ~voice~, perhaps familiar perhaps not. it's airy and laced with a bit of playfulness. ]

Mm... It almost feels like I travelled back in time. [ you can almost hear the smile and the laugh; she actually does chuckle a bit after a slight pause. ] Though, walking around in town might be a little easier than before.

Is shrinking Pokémon common? I'm more used to the reverse--Ah, wait... I should act more surprised to be here, shouldn't I? [ sorry she just can't turn off that teasing. ] Should I ask where I am, just for old time's sake?

[ and. ]

Though I suppose I've taken the surprise out of it already.

[ it's with those final words that she finally shuts off the device. ]

Third Person Sample:

When Judith wakes up, it's a bit of a deja-vu. Her first half-thought and action is to look beside her on the bed, to check if someone was there, like they had been the first time she came. She's not surprised to see no one, however--it doesn't take someone with sharp instincts to realize whether or not someone's right beside them, and she had sharp instincts. She won't say it's a strange feeling to wake up in this room alone, but thinking back the wake-up then had been livelier than the wake up now, which is just a quiet realization and a descent down the stairs.

It goes as it usually does. A hello from the mother, a bit of idle chatter. She made calm, easy conversation then and she still does so now. It's easier but still quieter than before, when the hello honey and pretend parenting were hidden by the screaming and bickering of her two companions. Maybe that's why it doesn't take too long for her to leave and she finally take in the looks of outside. A look up to the sky, around New Bark Town--small and calm, like she remembers it. It feels like it's been a while, but at the same time it's like she never left.

It really was strange. So much had happened back home, and here it was like always.

Then--

The next thing she does is open her bag, going through it to find the little Pokéball hidden somewhere inside. She finds a more open space to release what she expects to be a 40 foot whale, but is instead a small Wailmer. That-- well, that wasn't what she was expecting, but she takes it in stride anyway. A kneel in front of him, a pat on the head, a welcome back and hello.

When she looks back at the house, she finds she very much does still like it.

Character
Name: Liquid Snake
Series: Metal Gear Solid
Timeline: post-showdown atop REX, MGS1
Canon Resource Links:
MGS Wiki entry on Liquid
Wikipedia entry on MGS 1

Personality:
Liquid is an interesting mash of an arrogant son of a bitch mixed in with an inferiority complex the size of Wisconsin and an almost Shakespearean flair for drama. His body possesses near superhuman strength and endurance, he has an exceptionally high IQ and can employ an impressive level of discipline. He has all the skills of an elite super soldier and damn well knows it, and has the confidence that comes with being one of the best. He is, after all, a clone of Big Boss, the point man of FOXHOUND, and a decorated Gulf War veteran. He’s gone through training, battle, and torture and come out only stronger for it. Really, he has every reason for his confident swagger.

Except for the tiny matter of Solid Snake.

Ever since the day he was old enough to understand, Liquid was told that he was inferior. He was told, by the very man that he was cloned from and idolized, that he was the by-product formed in the creation of the perfect soldier; he was the garbage, the leftovers, the useless scraps. He would amount to nothing, and he was nothing. It was Solid who had been given all of Big Boss’ legacy, and it was Solid who would become the greatest soldier of the age. And no matter what Liquid did, no matter how hard he pushed himself or what he accomplished, he would never be good enough. The bitterness of being forever inferior left its mark on him at a young age; his chief motivations throughout his life were, and still are, hatred and the unshakable desire for revenge. Come hell or high water, he is determined to complete his goal—he would die for it, would make any sacrifice for it.

Despite Liquid's undeniable hatred for both Snake and his father, he paradoxically also desires their attention-- for him, it is better to be hated than ignored. The worst part of his treatment under his father was not that he was despised, but that he was disregarded; that he was nothing to the man that he so desperately wanted to please. He had originally wanted to gain his father's approval by surpassing his favored brother in the only way that he knew how-- by killing him. After a certain incident in Iraq where Big Boss failed to rescue him from captivity, however, that desire for his love changed to a burning need for revenge-- to make his father acknowledge him by making him suffer as he had suffered. And when Snake killed Big Boss before Liquid had the chance, all of that love-hate-obsession was transferred solely to him.

Needless to say, Liquid's screwed-up family life has left him with so many neuroses that Freud would shit his pants. And Big Boss wins the Joan Crawford Mommy Dearest award.

Leaving aside his dysfunctional family life for the moment, Liquid also believes that he needs to be the perfect soldier, or at least as close to perfect as man can get, and therefore thinks that any kind of weakness is unacceptable. He’s repressed every kind of emotion other than anger because he thinks that they’ll make him weak, and has avoided any kind of personal relationship for the same reason. Relationships are only there to be exploited, and he thinks he’ll be better off relying only on his own strength. This whole line of thinking has also led to the kind of paranoia normally seen only in diehard conspiracy theorists, but considering that he worked for five years with Revolver Ocelot, Mr. Chronic Backstabbing Disorder himself, a little paranoia is perhaps understandable.

Pride and narcissism count amongst Liquid’s primary vices, springing from the need to hide that perceived inadequacy that was instilled in him from childhood. He already is firm in the belief that he is fundamentally flawed; if confronted about this, however, he would vehemently deny it with every fiber of his being, and then would likely launch into an impassioned speech about his plans to rebuild Outer Heaven and defeat his twin. He is controlling and manipulative, and attempts to mold others’ perceptions to fit his desires. Liquid wants to be perceived as an aloof, unconquerable warrior, unsurpassed in intelligence and cunning, and will take the necessary steps to ensure such a reaction. He wants to be noticed, and he wants to be envied. Liquid can be ruthless if it’s necessary, or, should it serve him, he could be the opposite; either way, his actions will be foremost to further his goals, and he’s adaptive and resourceful enough to twist situations to his advantage.

Being a soldier, he realizes also the importance of being able to work in a unit, and, despite the fact that he thinks any unit is only worth having if he’s leading it, he can take an order when necessary—he is, after all, a soldier. And he isn’t opposed to taking advice, especially when that advice comes from someone who’s proven themselves competent. Liquid doesn’t know everything and is well aware of the fact that he can’t do everything.

Liquid tends to be imperious and sarcastic, and there are few times when he will be something other than those. It takes one hell of a good impression on him to start treating others as equals—it was something that recently had been exclusive to members of FOXHOUND, his black ops unit, all of whom he trusted and had proven time and time again that they were loyal and capable (except, perhaps, for Ocelot, but he was at least a consistent traitor, and no one could deny that they didn’t all expect him to backstab them somehow, eventually). It’s not impossible to gain his trust and professional respect, but it certainly takes a lot. Many things can irritate him or possibly even anger him, though, but nothing infuriates him like incompetence, either from an individual or a group, and it is not something that he ever tolerates. Mistakes are one thing—they happen, even after the most careful planning—but sheer ineptitude and uselessness is an entirely different thing.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Despite being the perceived lesser of the twins, Liquid has been trained as a soldier from a very young age, and is therefore skilled in combat, military tactics, and various types of weaponry. He is an outstanding pilot, and was capable of shooting down to F-16s while piloting from the weapon’s operator seat of a Hind D helicopter. He also has the advantage of being fluent in seven languages: French, Arabic, Malay, English, Spanish, Russian, and Chinese. Liquid also is incredibly intelligent, and his IQ was recorded as being 180 in his military records, and this helps him to learn and adapt quickly. His memory is also excellent and he can remember large amounts of information with exceptional recall.

He is naturally gifted with strength, stamina, and keen senses, which all come from being a clone of the elite soldier, Big Boss. Through training, he’s honed his physical capabilities to their peak, and therefore is a formidable opponent in a battle, whether ranged or melee. Liquid is also proficient at disguising himself, and can completely alter his mannerisms if necessary to complete a disguise.

His military experience allows him to keep a level head in a crisis, and also means that he is extremely difficult to threaten or intimidate. Liquid has a high pain threshold and high endurance, and can keep on going in even the most hostile environment. He’s adaptive, resourceful, and damn near impossible to kill, almost to the point where it seems as though he has at least nine lives. Possibly more.

Liquid has a big red button marked ‘Inferiority Complex’, and to set him off, all someone has to do is push it. Hard. Doing so can make him lose his restraint and sometimes his common sense, and at times can let him get played like a five cent kazoo, assuming the pusher plays his cards right. Sometimes, all it takes for him to get worked up is the mere mention of the names Solid Snake or Big Boss, and he’ll start into an epic rant that would put Hamlet to shame. His ‘family’ is his sorest point, outclassing even his pride and ego.
Liquid also suffers from PTSD and some pretty bad nightmares due to his time in the POW camp in Iraq. He tends to sleep very little as a result, either because he’s trying to avoid the nightmares or they wake him up when he does attempt to sleep. He dealt with the whole situation by repressing it all to hell, and certain actions or events could very well cause him to have a flashback.

[Who’s blond, angry, and ranting at his Pokegear? If you guessed ‘Liquid goddamn Snake’, you get a prize.]

I do not care who all of you are, or where I am, or how I have come to be here. I do not care if I have been spirited off to a strange world or if I am hallucinating though the latter seems much more likely than the former. Bloody Stinger missiles. Such mere details are irrelevant until I have gained the knowledge of one thing, and one thing only!

[dramatic pause]

The location of one man, the one man amongst the billions of wretches filling this miserable earth. The light to my darkness, the flesh of my flesh and blood of my blood, the man who casts a shadow that stretches to the end of the world! The man who stands high and secure upon an indomitable pedestal, the missing parts of my genetic legacy, who stole the birthright that should be mine! I will not rest until I find him! I will tear apart the fabric of this universe if I must!

My brother! Solid Snake!

[Protip: the prize is a rant.]

Third Person Sample:

The first indication that Liquid had returned to Johto was the fact that he entered it yelling. The yelling had started when he woke up and shouted Brother! right in the face of the woman who claimed to be his mother, and continued while he ranted at her about all the ways that this was physically impossible. Inaccurate genetics were mentioned and expounded upon until she managed to get him out the door.

The yelling continued after he had gotten his Pokegear out, figured out its workings (all over again; his memory of this place from twelve years ago had gone a little hazy), and demanded everyone over the network who would listen to him where Snake was. The fact that every answer he received was negative in that regard only served to fuel his ranting. The dick jokes didn’t help.

He had returned to this world that he remembered only as bits and pieces of a hallucination—a dream of freedom during a long period of captivity, no more real or consequential than any other dream or nightmare. Even now, he knew full well that this could be nothing more than the death throes of his dying brain while he lay at the feet of his broken war machine, surrounded by the ruin of his failed rebellion. His brother could be standing over him at this very moment, gun in hand and ready to deliver the killing blow. It would not be the ending that he had strived for—if he was going to take a bullet from his brother, he at least had wanted to be on his feet for it. To look into his brother’s eyes in that moment, to see the bloodlust and the hate in them. A final comfort to a man dying in the grip of his own failures.

Or… a second chance. One last shot at victory.

And one that he wasn’t going to let slip from his grasp.

Character
Name: Ondorus
Series: Rune Factory
Timeline: RF3, a few months post-second boss
Canon Resource Links: Wiki page has very, very little information; I'm writing out his history.

Like most Harvest Moon/Rune Factory characters, Ondorus does not have a fully developed life history, as the game focuses on his personality and relationships with other characters and only gives anecdotes from his life that are relevant to his personality during the course of the game. We do know that he is one of the last members of an ancient race of horned, humanoid monsters called the Univir. They have longer lifespans than humans and many other monsters, and have natural magical abilities - trope-wise, sort of a variant on the typical fantasy elf (which also inhabit the Rune Factory world.)

Long before Ondorus or any of the characters in the game were born, univir lived peacefully with humans, elves, and dwarves in the town of Sharance and the surrounding region. At some point, there was an altercation of some sort, and the Univir either left or were banished from Sharance. They withdrew from human society, living in secluded areas with other monsters and whatever members of non-human races wished to join them. What exactly happened to cause the split between humans and univir is unknown, as there are no complete records of the incident and the lingering hatred between the two races has colored whatever stories remain.

Ondorus was born in the Sol Terrano Desert, where a settlement had been established by the univir. By that time, the univir had all but died off, surviving in a few scattered individuals - by the time period in which the game takes place, he and Kuruna are the last univir inhabitants of the desert settlement. Kuruna, who is about 20 years older than him, has been his friend for his entire life. Neither has ever left the desert, though during their childhood they would often sneak out of the settlement to play in the canyons and crevices of Sol Terrano. Ondorus has spent his life helping Kuruna to maintain the settlement and - primarily - reading whatever material he can obtain by trading with non-humans, studying magic, history, mythology, crafting techniques, and anything else that comes into his hands.

His first appearance in the timeline of the game is when the protagonist arrives at the univir settlement. Ondorus welcomes Micah to their home and the two have a brief conversation on humans and how they're not all that bad ("don't tell Kuruna").

Some time after Micah's visit, the settlement is set upon by a vicious skeletal monster. Ondorus lends his magic to the seal that protects the settlement against attack, and it is thanks to Micah that the Skelefang is driven off and little damage was done. Ondorus develops trust and respect for what he believes is a brave young golden wooly, and later requests a favor of him - to take a certain medicine to the largest cactus in the desert and regrow the flower whose removal agitated the Skelefang in the first place.

The bulk of Ondorus' presence in the game is in daily dialogues that reveal things about him, his friends, the settlement, and the history of the Rune Factory world. He also appears in many of the univir settlement quests, though the cactus flower quest is the only one in which he is the requester.

Personality: Ondorus' first love is for knowledge, and there is nothing he loves more than to learn something new, regardless of the subject. He will read anything, from long books to short musings. He reads guides for crafts he never has and never will work. His love for the written word doesn't stop at informational texts. Ondorus reads fantasy and mythology, and has knowledge of every legendary weapon and long-lived rumor that occurs in fable. If there is no text on a subject, he will research it himself, collecting anecdotes and information from the people he encounters.

He presents the image of a wise, dignified intellectual - moderating his emotions, speaking carefully with a steady expression, showing amusement with only a small smile. He treats strangers with polite - and honest - friendliness, and is obliging and open-minded. He's more expressive and shows enthusiasm most readily around those he knows well.

Lurking beneath the refined, intelligent exterior is...well, still a refined and intelligent person, but also an absolute dork and sentimental sweetheart. Ondorus' face will light up if he is offered a glass of grape juice. He appreciates handcrafted objects not out of a refined sense of aesthetics, but an attachment to the personal meaning of it, enjoying the value of something by the work and love put into it....and how cool it looks. If questioned about his odd fondness for capes, he'll indignantly defend them as "the formal attire of univir". Those in his good graces know that they really aren't that common among univir at all, and that Ondorus wears them to mimic the heroes of his favorite books from childhood.

Ondorus' greatest concern in his life has always been his duty as a univir. Ondorus and Kuruna were raised knowing that their generation of univir would be the last, and they grew up shaped by that knowledge. Contrary to the usual stories, there was no heavy responsibility of ensuring their race's future - the univir had no future, and would inevitably disappear from the world as they had disappeared from Sharance so long ago. With no way of defying that future, Kuruna and Ondorus turned their energies to assisting other species of monsters who lived seperately from humans. While Kuruna became bitter towards the humans she had never met, the less aggressive and more sentimental Ondorus turned to the secret hope that univir could reconcile with humans before they vanished entirely.

His concern and care for his friends is quiet but strong, and he will not outright challenge someone he respects, but he does not hesitate to ensure their safety and well-being from behind the scenes or to run damage control if they are being unreasonable. More than once during RF3 he asks the player character for a favor on Kuruna or Zaid's behalf without their knowledge. His plans are only ever made with careful perception and planning, and for the purpose of helping his friends. He values his close friendships deeply, considering them as strong as family bonds, and if there is one thing Ondorus can be counted on it for is to always be there for the people who need him.

...At the same time, Ondorus approaches less devoted relationships rather oddly. See, he's centuries old. He has a tendency to outlive the people he gets to know. And while his experience with people of many kinds over several of their generations has taught him to appreciate and cherish life, culture, and individuality, he's also become...not detached, but very independent. He's come to peace with his own emotions and character, and can weather most things without support from anyone who isn't Kuruna. So when he goes into a relationship of any kind, it ends up very one-sided - he provides for the other party, emotionally and materially, but doesn't expect (or think he requires) anything from them. Certainly, he's grateful for kindness, but he doesn't rely on most of his friends. Without Kuruna around, though, he might need support more often than he thinks he does.

...Oh, and super relevant to R29: despite his appearance, Ondorus is a monster. Functionally, this doesn't mean much: just that he used to have some cool powers and a sweet horn back home. But he's lived out his life in a village full of creatures not entirely unlike Pokemon, treating them as equal to himself. He claims more relation to wolves, flying fish, and plant monsters than to humans, dwarves, or elves. This will color his perspective on Johto as a whole, and he'll probably be prone to empathizing more with Pokemon than their trainers.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths: book-smart, though a large amount of that is now useless. His analytical intelligence and memory for facts will make up for that quickly enough, since he devours any new information like a Snorlax in an orchard. Good at figuring people out. Good at using that to figure out how to help them. Genuinely cares about people without getting invested enough in them to turn it into a half-weakness.

Weaknesses: Kind of a wet tissue without his magic. Not so good at not providing when people don't want to be helped out; prone to going behind their backs to continue helping them in these situations, and assuming he knows what's best for them in the long term. Has never been without Kuruna and the settlement before, and doesn't really know what to do about being separated from them. Don't say anything negative about capes to his face.

-it's on? Thank you...

[The screen is at first obscured by something that moves away with a raspy chirp, leaving a bespectacled man to glance away from the screen for a moment before turning his attention to it. He seems worried but composed, letting his hand fall from where he'd been rubbing a knuckle absently against his forehead.]

Good...afternoon. [pause, then a sigh.] And a strange one. I don't know who is or how many are listening, but I hope my situation isn't common among you. It's...[pause] awfully disorienting.

[More of that chirping, and Ondorus looks to his side as a green blob of feathers flutters its way up to his shoulder and shuffles around there for a moment, cooing. He smiles wordlessly for a moment and then looks back at the Pokégear.]

She offers her greetings, too. Anyhow - is there anyone listening to whom Sol Terrano means anything? Or, at least, Adonea? Or...[His smile falls a little, and he breathes in as he thinks how to word this]...any for whom being a human comes as a bit of a shock?

-or knows of the Forest of Beginnings. [It comes out more rushed than the rest of what he's said, as though the thought came to him suddenly. The Natu on Ondorus' shoulder taps her foot firmly against him, and he nods a little.] Nobody here seemed to respond to any inquiry.

[He glances down (fiddles with something-) and back up.] I hope I'm using this correctly. [A tired smile.] Apparently there's a town of some size that I should get started on reaching. Thank you for your time - and I hope to make acquaintances with some of you.

[Ondorus bows his head politely, then the Pokegear tilts back so that it is receiving a shot of the sky. Offscreen, his voice can be heard - how do I shut this off, now? - along with some chirping from the Natu, and after a few seconds the entry ends.]

Third Person Sample: He thought he was dreaming, at first. There would be no other reason for him to wake up on a bed that felt so different from his own, under light that fell in patterns from a window rather than glowing through the walls of his tent, and breathing air that was warm but not quite dry enough to be what it should.

...But he felt too lucid. He was sitting up, looking around - was he fully clothed? Yes - and this wasn't a tent, it was a room in a house, and what was outside that window was certainly not desert.

Ondorus stood up, slowly, and immediately felt what was most wrong. His hand flew to his forehead, his heart seizing in his chest, and he sat back down heavily on the bed as he tried to process what had happened. Where his horn should have been, there was nothing but skin over smooth bone. He reached back to feel his newly-rounded ears, feeling light-headed from the jolt of surprise. What was more...the realization dawned, as the initial shock slowly faded, that he could feel no magic. No rune energy within him, concentrated behind a horn that wasn't there - and neither was there rune energy outside of him, radiating slowly up from the earth. He leaned back, sitting with his head resting against the wall, trying to think as the dazed, hollow feeling ran its course. He was human, in a house, in a place devoid of Rune, being stared at by a bird-

....

A bird. Ondorus was confused but not alarmed, tilting his head to stare back at the plump, wide-eyed green bird that was perched on the back of his chair. It didn't blink, move, or make any noise, maintaining contact for...in his state of confusion, Ondorus couldn't tell how long it was, but it felt like minutes before he himself blinked and let out a breath. "I'm sorry," he murmured to it, not completely sure what he was apologizing for.

It tilted its head (...well, its whole body), ruffling its wings, still unblinking. Ondorus sat up. "Hello," he tried again, wondering if this monster could offer any help or answers.

Hello, it replied.

Character
Name: Canada
Series: Axis Powers Hetalia
Timeline: Modern Day (August 2012)
Canon Resource Links: Hetalia Wiki | Canada Wiki

Personality:
Canada is a country who's described as having "no remarkable traits" to help him stand out. Because of this, he's almost always either mistaken for his neighbor to the south and brother, America, or unable to be seen/recognized at all. Often when he's in the room the other countries feel a bit nervous since they're vaguely aware of his presence but unable to place it. This of course is his main joke and is also the main issue he has to deal with constantly-- being recognized and treated like he's a nobody, no matter how much he actually helps.

This can at times lead to Canada feeling pretty defeated in his efforts. Even if he does think things in anger or wish that people would notice him, most of the time when he tries to speak his concerns or yell at people it comes out as passive and agreeing because, as he's said in one strip, what can he say to counter it? Even Kumajiro, his long term friend, a small white bear who's almost always seen with him, can't remember his name. But it's returned because Canada often can't remember his name in return, calling him many variations throughout the strips. There are times when he can show his anger, though, as seen either in his exasperated cries of "I'm Canada!!" in response to people, or even his 3 hour long lecture to America, detailing every one of his faults. Making even America upset, it's clear that Canada can pack a punch with his words when he needs to!

In fact, a large part of Canada is his determination, willpower, and overall stubborn nature. Even when faced with others ignoring him so often or going unnoticed, Canada is constantly working on ways to show others the real him! To prove that he's not such an unremarkable guy after all! Though he's calm, easy-going, and very different from America in plenty of ways, he's also filled with a fiery determination to do things for himself. He has confidence in himself no matter what, whether it's thinking angry things and that he'll finally tell off France and England for saying mean things (which he backs down on but still tries to do), lecturing America for three hours straight, or the various bold ways he displays himself in front of the others. He's very eager to show off things about his country, as shown in everything from his character song to his strips, and even if it's overshadowed he continues patiently along with trying. Often he'll try things to make himself stand out more, whether from encouragement from Kumajiro (like asking for dinner when he was young) or thoughts on his own (like putting a maple flag on his forehead).

He's also shown to be a really cheerful, energetic guy, even if it's in his own quiet way. When Cuba isn't mistaking Canada for America, they're actually great friends and enjoy a lot of time together. For example, in one of the Christmas events, the two were shown fooling around together by taking pictures in various silly poses. When he's recognized, Canada is actually shown to get along with a lot of the nations! Even with America's constant annoyance, the two seem to get along like brothers, playing together even if Canada gets the short end of the stick (like in the baseball strip where America keeps hitting him with the ball). He's had peaceful talks with America as well, about his day or things he's dealt with. It's shown that Korea and China came over to his house with plenty of citizens when he was looking for new immigrants, and China has talked to him about merchant work before. France even claimed to be able to recognize Canada because his hair was more like his! When England does recognize Canada, it's with a bit of relief (he's really the calmer one). Things like that show that Canada really is a guy who gets along well with people, and it's really the standing motivation behind his constant determination to show himself to the world. He knows he's a good guy, too! He just has to show it more, and he certainly tries.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths;
First and foremost is his fiery determination and stubbornness. While normally the word "stubborn" is associated with negative things, in Canada's case he's always trying to present himself in the best light and show everyone what he can do. On top of that, he's a very kind and generous person straight to the heart. He'll help someone out if they're in need, listen to them if they have a suggestion, try to help them if they need it-- and because of all these things, he's generally well liked. (Well... When he's recognized.) It should also be noticed that his patience and ability to keep calm are exceptional strengths of character. He does get angry, so his patience does have a point where it wears thin, but even at that point he's able to react with a calm, passive sort of statement. On top of that, he always gets back up after failing to be recognized, ready to show himself to the world better the next time!

Weaknesses;
His nature makes him kind of a pushover. Even if he can hold his own in fights or knows how to lecture America for 3 hours straight, there are times where that doesn't quite pan out. For example just seeing America with a chainsaw gets him to back down from complaining and laugh about how they're great friends, even when America tries to explain he really didn't hear his first complaint. Russia has used him as a chair in the past, and his "invisibility" to other nations has really kept him out of the loop in the past.

I can use this, eh? Oh, wait...

[The voice is extremely faint and the video isn't giving much to offer at first, either. It spins around a few times, catching glimpse of Canada's leg and the Teddiursa hiding behind it, but it's a moment longer before he points it at his own face, looking a little tired, but smiling all the while. His voice is still very soft spoken, but it's a bit easier to hear now.]

Hello! I'm Canada. I'm not sure that I understand what's going on here... Before I knew it I was outside with this little guy. [He looks down, and points the device to show his Teddiursa as well. Hm...

Oh, but back to his face now!]
If anyone has seen a white bear who talks, would you mind contacting me? His name is Mr. Kumasaka and he's a very good friend of mine. Thank you for your time!

Third Person Sample:
"H-hello?! Mr. Kumasaburo?!"

Even in a yell it's quiet and mostly unnoticed by any other trainers surrounding him, and Canada sighs heavily. His feet have already allowed him to wander away from the center of town and towards the route, oblivious to the flash of light from his pokebelt as he does so, but he pauses in place there, staring out at the grass. The background music was distracting enough (though, oddly enough, it wasn't the STRANGEST thing he'd encountered in his life). What was he supposed to do now? It was at that thought that the tugging along his pant leg became more prominent and he turned back, spotting the small bear pokemon with a start. He kneels down, extending a hand curiously which it latches onto with a cute shyness. "Where'd you come from, eh?"

The only response it seems to make is to put its free paw into its mouth, at which Canada stands back up. He allows the creature to take a place behind him, clinging to his leg. This really is a bizarre situation. He thought for sure it was a dream, but the more time went on, the less likely that seemed. And if it wasn't a dream... then how?! What kind of guy gets into a situation like this... And where's Kumajiro? He frowns, looking genuinely displeased with things. That is, until his mind gets working on it a bit more. He knows how this works... Enough of it, at least, right?! That would be enough! He could walk through this route and find the next town, and from there maybe things would become clear! But not before he checked out his own things.

A new determination firing him up, he slips the backpack off of his shoulders, falling into a sitting position right there in the dirt to shuffle through his things. As Teddiursa makes itself comfortable nearby, he decides to talk to it. "So you want to come with me, eh? Well, it won't be too long of a journey... I hope. Just let me get through my things... I wonder if there's anything I can use..."

Character
Name: Other Mother / The Beldam
Series: Coraline
Timeline: Post-Movie
Canon Resource Links:Wikipedia Article
Part of what makes Other Mother so terrifying is that she literally has no backstory. All you know is what you see of her when she’s with Coraline. It can be assumed she’s been hunting and killing children for at least a few hundred years (what with one of the children using rather old fashioned language), but aside from that, there’s nothing else that explains who she really is or why she is the way she is. The most personal thing we learn about the Other Mother - thanks to the novel - is that she did have a Mother of her own, but apparently buried her alive. No reason is given for this, and for all anyone knows, she could have been lying.

Personality:

On the surface, Other Mother is the perfect parent. She’s loving, patient and incredibly kind, always willing to go the extra mile to make her child happy.

Just to make Coraline smile, Other Mother creates a whole new world full of circus mice, musical performances and singing flowers, without even needing to be asked. She knows what her children want, and she’ll always give it to them, no matter what the cost. On top of being exceptionally kind to her children, Other Mother is actually rather sweet to adults, too. In the world she made for Coraline, you can see that each ‘Other’ version of a person is given everything they’ve ever wanted. Other Mr. B, for example, is given world wide fame thanks to his mice, while Other Miss Sprink and Other Miss Forcible are both given youth, talent and beauty. It appears that anyone her child appears to favor is automatically in Other Mother’s good books, while those who aren’t exactly liked why her child are in the top three on her shit list.

She’s shown to be rather vengeful when it comes to her children. Wybie, who Coraline can’t stand, is recreated in Otherworld without the ability to speak, the Other Mother claiming she ‘fixed’ him to make him for likable in Coraline’s eyes.

In the novel version of Coraline, Other Mother’s love is described to be the same ‘as a miser loves money, or a dragon loves its gold.’ While she, in her mind, honestly loves her children, her expression of said love comes out warped and twisted by her own madness. She believes that to truly love someone, you must possess every part of their being, shown to be quite literal as she takes her children’s eyes and, eventually, soul. In her mind, this is the most sincere form of love, and she struggles to understand why anyone would view her affections as insane. Even during her final showdown with Coraline, she mentions to her that she really does, in fact, care about the girl, and once Coraline leaves, she screams after her, begging her not to leave her, claiming she’ll die without Coraline. Her relationship with Other Father reflects this idea of possessive love, as well. While Other Mother treats him well around the children, she becomes increasingly abusive towards him the more he sides with Coraline. She wants Other Father to adore the children, but she wants to be his top priority; just like she wants to be the top priority in the minds of her kids. The only issue with this is that even when Other Mother is made the main person in another person’s life, she can never get enough love from them. In the novel, it’s explained that the ghost children were kids who contented to having the buttons sewn into their eyes to make them official members of the ‘Other Family’, but were eventually cast aside and eaten by Other Mother due to her belief they didn’t love her enough, as well as her need to feast on children to remain alive. It seems that no amount of affection will ever be enough for her, though she continues to search for the one child who can give her all the love and attention she needs.

She’s incredibly protective because of her love. While many of us would go to great lengths to protect our loved ones, Other Mother is willing to harm her loved ones in order to save them from an even greater threat (whether or not said threat is real is a different issue). For example, she almost kills Coraline, in her mind, to protect her from returning to a world where she isn’t truly loved. Of course, that’s far from true, but Other Mother appears to genuinely believe that things would be better not only for herself, but for Coraline, too, if her child simply stayed in Otherworld.

Other Mother is an exceptional manipulator. No matter how bad things may be going for her, she can always turn it into a positive with a few well placed words and a smile. When Coraline faces her to demand the return of her parents, Other Mother manages to spin her crystal clear guilt into blame on Coraline’s actual parents, telling the girl that she hasn’t done anything, and that they may have moved to France due to being sick of having her as their daughter. While Coraline doesn’t believe it, it does seem to effect her at some level.

She’s also one cocky woman. It’s undeniable. She takes every challenge and honestly believes she’ll win at everything (although whether she wins by playing fair or not is unimportant to her). She agrees to play Coraline’s game and release her and her parents if she wins, but seems amused by the idea of being beaten, making it quite clear she’s damn sure she won’t lose.

All in all, Wu Tang Clan Other Mother ain’t nothing to fuck with.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
STRENGTHS
An exceptional cook
Extremely intelligent
Perceptive: She’s able to read a person very well, as shown by her masterful manipulation of Coraline’s insecurities about her parents.
Excellent memory: Other Mother remembers everything about everyone. No matter how small the detail, she’ll remember it.

WEAKNESSES
Painfully co-dependent on affection: She literally becomes physically ill when she feels like she’s not being loved enough by her children.
Batshit insane
Literally can’t stay still, she’s always tapping her fingers on the nearest surface
Demanding: She may not show it until she’s pushed to the edge, but Other Mother is extraordinarily demanding. She may not want money or clothes or jewels, but it’s almost impossible to meet her demand of affection.

Pokémon Information
Affiliation: Definitely a breeder. The world needs more love, after all.

Samples
First Person Sample: [Other Mother watches the camera blankly, her blinking slow and breathing shallow. The woman clearly isn’t well, and it’s only further proved by the way her hand trembles as it reaches up to brush a strand of hair out of her face.]

Has... Has anyone seen my husband?

[Her voice is weak; tired, even. Almost like she hasn’t slept in days, which, judging by the dark rings around her eyes, she hasn’t.]

I can’t find him.

[A Drifloon floats onto the screen, just above Other Mother’s head. It’s string brushes against her hair in a comforting motion, finally making the exhausted woman a reason to smile.]

I’m sorry, dear. I know you must be jealous I’m talking about another man while you’re around. Don’t worry, though. You’ll always be the man of the house, alright?

Third Person Sample: She found the creature once again trying to kidnap a child. Her dear little Spigtan, the strange purple balloon creature who’d followed her out of that strange house and all the way to the next town over, seemed to have a habit of latching onto children and pulling. It may have been a little amusing, but when the poor dears begun to panic - much like the one Spigtan was currently tugging upwards was - Other Mother was compelled to step in and put a stop to it.

She was careful when unwinding her Drifloon’s string from the girl’s left wrist, doing her best not to harm the child or her dear Pokemon; after all, she couldn’t really blame Spigtan for wanting to grab such an adorable girl. However, it wasn’t exactly appropriate to just take a child. There had to be a need; a desire they had to come away and stay with their Other Mother. Simply grabbing a little one and running... Well, it just wasn’t right in Other Mother’s eyes.

Almost immediately, the girl took off running, tears streaming down her face as she dashed back towards her house. Other Mother turned, cocking an eyebrow at Sprigtan, watching the strange beast bounce up and down, it’s large, beady eyes watching her right back.

Would it be odd to say that some foreign creature appeared to understand he better than her own husband did?

Yes. It would be, and Other Mother wasn’t fond of appearing strange, especially when she was in such a new place and first impressions were oh so important. Still, she smiled softly, wrapped her left pinky around the Drifloon’s string and gave it a gentle, teasing tug. Her smile turned into a grin as the balloon-like creature released almost a giggling noise, it’s string tightening around her finger and pulling it in return.

Timeline: Act Six, Intermission 2: The dream bubble discussion with Meenah and Araena.

Canon Resource Links: [Homestuck]
[Dave Strider]

Personality:

Dave Strider is a kid who maintains a cool facade. It isn’t exactly false! He’s fast to adapt to even the craziest of situations. While others are fumbling over new controls and mechanics he’s already backing them up. You’ll find no one more loyal than he is. Time and time again he’ll step up to help his friends even if it means dying repeatedly. But only for tasks he deems important. Most things Dave really doesn’t give a damn about.

He’s also kind of an asshole. He needles people about their interests and snoops into their crap. Yet, he doesn’t say much about himself or how he’s feeling. He wraps it up in misdirection and word play. Unless he’s flipping about something, you have to drag it out of him. When Dave freaks it breaks down his metaphors and commentary.

He tends to not see whatever surprised him coming. He always spots the surprise right before it hits and he’s left rolling with it. After a long history of this, he has a cynical roll with it because you can’t stop it sort of view. If it bothers him and believe me it does, he’ll cover it up.

Dave grew up in his successful brother’s shadow and sought to emulate him. It was hard to tell what part of Dave was DAVE and he wasn’t sure of it himself. His issues with his own identity have been semi-resolved but his insecurities have not. He downplays his accomplishments and doesn’t consider himself a ‘hero’. Despite that he’s a witty guy with an off the wall sense of humor adopted from his brother.

They call it ‘irony’ but it would be best considered the misconception of the subject. He removes a subject out of context and creates a joke within a joke. The whole secret of it all is it doesn’t really matter. He’s poking fun at the content, at himself, and everything else. It’s the real ‘joke’.

Let’s return to his superstar brother, Bro Strider. Dave hero worshipped him to the point he denied that he found his brother’s puppets creepy. As said before, he emulated him and tried his damnest to be just like him. Bro meant everything to him, yet there’s a darker side to his relationship with his brother. Dave could never defeat his brother. He always lost to him.

And none of that was resolved. Instead, Bro was brutually murdered and Dave was left with all of his problems. It was only after struggling against the obstacles against him, with only himself to rely on, that he came to see who he is.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths
X LOYALTY - If you earn Dave’s friendship whether you want it or not, you’re stuck with him.
X SICK BEATS - Music is one of the things Dave excels at. He’s not as good as his brother but he can still rock the house.
X SMILE FOR THE CAMERA - He’s great with a camera. For whatever reason his interests in this field include managing his own dark room.
X KNIGHT - Despite his attitude Dave is the sort to put himself in harm’s way to avert disasters that could befall on his friends. Even if it means his death.
X CASH FLOW - He’s capable at managing cash and using it only for specific purposes.
X LEVEL IT OFF - When everyone else is losing their mind, Dave is able to maintain a calm attitude. Even if he’s secretly losing it.

Weaknesses.
X PUPPETS - Don’t mind him. He’ll be as far away from you as he can get.
X CYNICISM - The first person to see the bad in a situation. In his mind you have to roll with it. It can’t be changed.
X APATHY - Let’s face this now. Most times Dave just doesn’t care enough. This comes back to bite him countless times.
X RELUCTANT HERO - Don’t let the asshole routine fool you. He’ll die repeatedly so no one else does. That’s just his job.

Third Person Sample: For all of the ups and downs of being a Pokemon trainer, it wasn’t that bad. It beat being a Sburb player hands down. He had yet to die and everyone pretty much said he didn’t have to worry about that. Dave put it out of his mind within the first week of his journey. The flaming pony aside, life was so normal he nearly didn’t know what to do with himself.

He figured it out pretty quickly. Snoop was a trusty companion on his adventures as he trudged into a forest to hunt for new pokemon to catch and train up. She knocked out her opponents with a kick and he found himself warming to the weird situation. As they moved through the foliage he felt something hit his head. Confused, he looked up just as a big fat rain drop splattered over his shades. “Shit.”

He reached out a hand and patted Snoop’s shoulder a bit too urgently for his own tastes. She was a fire pokemon. There was no way water drenching her flames could be a good thing. He poured over the map feature of his gear and steered them towards the nearest cave. Would she follow him if he took off? He had no idea.

Welp.

Dave snapped out his pokeball, called Snoop back into it, and darted away. Lightning cracked and he tore through the forest, ignoring any sounds or cries of angered pokemon. He would deal with all of that later. Shit shit shit shit. It really would have been a good idea to listen to the weather reports. Or something. He nearly got flattened when skidded and slammed into a tree. It was only training and his wits that kept the thing that fell out of the tree from landing on him.

Without a backward glance he made it the last few feet and ducked into the cave. His breath came out in explosive puffs of air as he took a moment to catch his breath. When he’d settled down he took Snoop back and dealt with her irritated glare. “What? You wanted to get rained on?”

Character
Name: Owly
Series: Owly
Timeline: After the fifth book, I guess?
Canon Resource Links: Official website

Personality:
Owly is basically the friendliest, most loving creature you'll ever meet. Despite the usual predatory nature of his species, he has never harmed a single living creature, and has actually managed to switch to a vegetarian diet. He basically wants to befriend everyone he meets, and wants all his friends to do the same. He will lecture his friends about the importance of helping others if he thinks he has to. However, at the same time, he can be a little too soft-hearted, wanting to solve every dilemma through diplomacy or talk instead of conflict. He rarely even gets angry, and even when he does, he usually doesn't stay angry for long, and will always be willing to work out a compromise. Even being beaten in a contest doesn't stir up any feelings of jealousy in him, and he is always polite to everyone. Owly is also very curious about the world around him. Whenever he encounters something he doesn't yet understand, he looks it up. For him, this is both a way of conquering fear and learning some more about the world around him. A lot of his knowledge has been obtained from books.

One thing that upsets Owly greatly is seeing others be afraid of him. Even though he understands why they act this way, it doesn't make the fact hurt any less. He can also get quite upset when his friends are in any sort of distress, and will often do his best to help in those sorts of situations. Of course, he also gets upset when he sees any creature in distress, even if they aren't yet one of his friends. Another thing that upsets him even more is having other creatures be hurt because of him, even if it is indirectly. Usually, if allowed to help, he is quite good at solving situations of all sorts. Even if the first solution doesn't work, he can usually think of plenty more. And he is always willing to try more.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths
-Gardening: Owly loves gardening, and is also really good at it. He often tries to prepare plants that he knows his animal friends like.
-Building things: Owly is also very good at planning and building things, with the right materials. Though the materials he does have access to are few, the things he makes still turn out quite serviceable.
-Creative: Owly is good at thinking up clever solutions to problems, if given a little time.
-Friendly: Owly is naturally friendly to everyone, and good at befriending most creatures.
-Talking to animals: Having originally been an owl himself, Owly can talk to any animal.

Weaknesses
-Pacifist: Owly prefers to try and solve all situations through diplomacy, even if it become obvious that such a plan won't work.
-Somewhat naive: Owly does understand that the world is a harsh place and bad things happen, but still tends to believe that everything will always work out fine in the end.
-Self-blaming: Even if he only has minimal involvement with a bad situation, if he had any involvement at all, Owly will feel as if everything is his fault.
-Anti-human: Despite his friendliness towards all creatures, the only encounters Owly has had with humans are negative ones. Since they cannot even understand his speech, he tends to see them as a sort of frightening monster.

[A man with dark gold eyes, bushy eyebrows, and a hooked, beaky nose stares intently at the screen. When he speaks, his voice is screechy and panicked.]

Where am I? What happened to my body? Why am I one of-one of these things? [He indicates his arms and legs with some distaste.] Everything feels so strange...my limbs are completely useless, my vision has deteriorated, and I have no feathers at all! Just some weird fur that's barely enough to keep me warm! [To prove his point, he throws off his shirt, exposing his chest.]

Would someone please help me out? I need to go back home! All my friends will be so worried!

Third Person Sample:
"Oh, I wish Wormy were here to see this!" exclaimed Owly, stretching his strange new limbs and staring at the sunset. After being told over and over again that yes, he was trapped in this world, and no, there was no way home, he had finally decided to face the facts and try out this new world. And...he could find new friends here! True, he was in the completely wrong body, but at the very least he could still understand animals.

Speaking of animals...he turned to look at his new friend. Okay, the dragon had frightened him at first, but he had turned out to be the friendliest creature an owl could ask for.

"Do you think we should go now, Ruddy?" he asked. Ruddy had insisted that he had no name of his own, that whatever name Owly gave him would be fine. So he had finally chosen a name quite in tune with the names he and his friends had, and Ruddy had found said name quite satisfying.

"Yes, we should get going," agreed the giant dragon. "As you can see, it's getting late, and that...person who claimed to be your mother will most likely not let us back in. Besides, I would not want to spend another night in her house. It is far too strange."

"Alright!" replied the owl. "There's only one path, so we shouldn't get lost!"

"I would not be so proud, if I were you," warned Ruddy. "Even if the route is straightforward, we may encounter other dangers on the way."

"No problem! Together I'm sure we can handle anything!"

Ruddy smiled, a slow grin that cracked through his face and expressed an obvious joy. "I am very happy that you put so much faith in me. I hope it will not be misplaced."

"Don't worry! You're my friend! And I will always trust anyone who is my friend!"

And the two smiling creatures, one so much larger than the other, set off on their journey.

Character
Name: Yuusei Fudou
Series: Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's
Timeline: Mid episode 143, just before Yuusei arrives at one of the three gears moving the Ark Cradle and finds out the true identity of Dark Glass.
Canon Resource Links: Biography at the Yu-Gi-Oh! wikia.

Personality: Yuusei is, first and foremost, a rather serious, calm and collected guy. He tends to be rather reserved and, at times, secretive about his personal affairs, choosing to hold most of his emotions back in favor of helping others, and he normally keeps his cool in relatively stressful situations. The cases in which this doesn't hold true are the situations that involve his friends. However, if he's hurt deeply enough, if a sensitive area is rubbed the wrong way, he can slip into a melancholy that makes him likely to actually show his grief or anger, even if he's lashing out briefly at his friends (which is something that he immediately apologizes for later). But if his friends can snap him out of it, then he takes on the challenge ahead of him with a renewed fervor.

However, due to plot convenience the reasoning behind his father's choice of name for him, he has a desire to please and a friendly nature that, more often than not, creates bonds between himself and others. It's these bonds he creates with other people that gives him the inner strength and confidence he needs at times when things are looking a little too grim, even for him. And though he may seem indifferent at times, as the series progresses, he finds himself more willing to open up a little, with a few more smiles than before.

Yuusei's generally more relaxed around the people he's found himself caring for, but if they're in danger, he may resort to doing reckless and impulsive things to protect them. There have even been cases of him taking rash actions to save those he doesn't know at all, such as the inhabitants of Neo Domino City and Satellite, and especially in the case of children (most of the protagonists of the series have a weak spot for children). He has a strong tendency to make promises that seem impossible to keep... and he succeeds in keeping them, the goal being to give that other person hope for the future ahead of them. Why? Because despite his casual indifference, his friends are easily the most important to him.

He can make a friend of an enemy, and an even closer friend of an acquaintance by showing his abilities and desire to help others, as he's normally a good judge of character - he doesn't dislike anyone unless he's given a good reason to. He has a habit of asking the enemies he's just dueled if they're okay, showing that he doesn't intend to ever hurt anyone. However, it's because of this that he's actually fairly forgiving once he learns of a person's situation, but he tries to steer their hearts in the right direction so they can redeem themselves. Of course, near the end of the series, this results in others sacrificing themselves for the sake of the lessons he taught them and wanting to further Yuusei's goal of protecting Neo Domino City. As such, it's easy to see that he's mature for his age, but can also be a little naive in the same sense.

He's a confident individual, though he isn't usually smug about anything; when he realizes he has the upper hand in any situation, there's a bit of a smirk on his lips and a few choice words about how the opponent won't win... right before he kicks their ass with some strategy that no one else would think of when he's down to the last scraps of his Life Points. And most times, he ends up teaching the opponent some life lesson they wouldn't have learned otherwise, or he snaps them out of something that makes them not... them. Though he doesn't speak much, it's the moments when he does that he proves he has much to say, and he says it in the most concise way possible while still getting his point across. Whether it's someone that's challenging his beliefs, such as speaking ill of his dreams or those important to him, or questioning his loyalty, he'll end up with a stern expression and his own words to be shared and the actions to back up how he feels.

Yuusei also has a bit of a rebellious nature, though usually for good reason. He's taken down security guards, hacked into the police force's systems as well as other general systems, broken into warehouses and built things that were outlawed. However, had he not done those things, had he not had the drive to get where he needed to go, he wouldn't have become the eventual hero of Neo Domino City, or brought the city and Satellite together. And what's a good protagnist if he doesn't break a few rules to do what needs to be done? His issue with authority has saved his skin, as well as his friends'.

He needs something to tinker with; when Yuusei isn't dueling for fun or to save his city, he's busy making upgrades to his D-Wheel or fixing up the D-Wheels that belong to his friends. And when he's not doing that, he's finding something to fix, whether it be a physical repair or a broken bond between a total stranger and their friend.

Strengths/Weaknesses: Off the bat, Yuusei's greatest fear is (until the end of the series, but even then, it's entirely likely that he still has nightmares of it happening) a repeat of the Zero Reverse incident, the event that destroyed Domino City 17 years prior to the beginning of the series. Though he was just an infant during the event, he survived and after discovering that it was his father that unintentionally caused the incident, he's felt a secondhand responsibility for the event, as well as in some cases, a sort of irrational guilt when it comes to the other lives touched in what he sees is a negative way by the occurence. Though, by this point he's over it a little, his parents and Zero Reverse are a bit of a sensitive spot.

As for his skills, they're highlighted in the personality section, but I'll elaborate on them here.

He's an excellent mechanic. It's mentioned several times throughout the series that he's built D-Wheels (specially designed motorbikes made specifically with a screen, hologram projector and intelligence system to make it possible to duel other riding duelists by keeping track of card effects and turns taken, and calculating the gains and losses of speed counters and Life Points) from scratch, about three or four estimated. In one specific episode, Yuusei reveals that he's used things such as aluminum cans and wire hangers for parts, so it's clear that even if he's given a heap of junk, he can make something with it.

D-Wheels also require a large amount of programming to function, so his ability to write programs ties in with his ability to hack security systems or any sort of electronic system in general (though he would really only do such a thing if it's for a damn good reason) and how quickly he picks up on figuring out any kind of technology, seeing as he's from a more technologically advanced era in time. He's likely to tinker with the PokeGear a bit, to see what it's capabilities are and to figure out what improvements can be made to it for everyone.

He's also pretty decent at hand-to-hand combat, likely from having grown up in Satellite, which is an area full of tough guys and criminals. And though obviously not everyone there is an enemy to be made, it's likely that there were just some people he was incapable of winning over, and duels just weren't going to cut it. Again, this is something he isn't exactly going to demonstrate without a good reason. But he'll never intentionally kill a person unless it's something absolutely unavoidable, but even then, he dislikes doing so.

Ironic.

[ There's a moment of silence as the Klink seems to pick up the speed that it spins. When the voice speaks again, it sounds distracted, like he's focused on something. ]

Naming you after myself would be kind of pretentious, wouldn't it? Even if I'm sure it'd fit you just as well.

[ The feed flickers a bit and it cuts to static for a moment, then it comes back in, the image a bit sharper and clearer than it had been before. After a few seconds, the camera's finally pointed into view, and the figure there's looking a little unimpressed with his surroundings. ]

If anyone can hear me... should I assume that there's no known way of getting out of here? I've got something important to do back home.

[ But go ahead. Tell him that there's no way to leave. He'll just try that much harder to find a way. ]

Third Person Sample:

There really was no plausible explanation as to why the last thing Yuusei remembered was being on his D-Wheel, racing towards one of the Planetary Gears of the Ark Cradle with Dark Glass at his side, and yet he woke up in a completely unfamiliar bed with a woman ushering him out of the house. And though she was supposedly his mother, he found himself rather unsettled by the fact that she looked nothing like his actual mother, and while he'd only seen a single photo of her with himself and his father, they were clearly not the same person. He appreciated the thoughtfulness (as a somewhat trigger response) though that didn't keep him from pondering just why he was here.

Yuusei had important things to do, after all. He had just a few hours before the Ark Cradle would fall and collapse into the city, his city, and the seconds were ticking by far too quickly for his taste. The Ark Cradle needed to be stopped, Neo Domino City needed to be saved, and Yuusei needed the reassurance that every last one of the citizens of the city was safe and uninjured. ... Or as uninjured as he could have left them when he was previously drawing Aporia away from the city. The damage to buildings could be repaired, though. The damage to human lives couldn't.

But he stopped to think, eyes on the doors to the lab several feet away and slightly to his right. There was, after all, a possibility that wherever he was now, time had stopped back in his home or that at the very least, when he'd end up returning, it would be as if no more than a few seconds had passed. It wasn't a far-fetched idea for being under the assumption of this place being alternate dimension of sorts. The Crimson Dragon had proved to be capable of many different things, after all.

Yuusei's question then was, 'Why?'

He reached behind him, feeling for both of his decks and feeling the relief wash over him as a result of both of them being there. At least he had those on hand. Now all he had to do was finish whatever his task was here and find a way to get a hold of someone he knew. It wasn't likely that there'd be anyone - in fact, it was entirely possible that it would be as the Crimson Dragon had done before, pulling him and him alone into an earlier era of time to save the future - but it was worth trying, anyway.

He just hoped (for once) that he had been pulled from the midst of one act to save his home into another act of saving something. He'd never asked for the part of a hero, but if that's the role that was going to be given to him, then he'd take it and do his best with it.

If not... well, then he'd just have to make the best of the situation. Adapt like he's always done, while trying to find a way to get back home. Maybe if he could get enough parts to make himself a new D-Wheel, something could be done. The technology here doesn't seem to be nearly as advanced as it was back home, but if he could put something together that could help him get to some sort of speed that might create a rift to take him back, and something that didn't involve the power of the Crimson Dragon. It didn't seem like it was responding anyway.

Damn. Bruno might be able to help, but it was likely he wasn't even here. With a sigh, Yuusei pulled out the PokeGear to look the device over briefly. If he was lucky, he'd find someone that possibly got pulled in with him. Maybe Dark Glass, since he'd be just as good to help him out.

Various Gordon Quotes
Gordon calling Coop a Chihuahua

Personality: If someone were to meet Gordon for the first time, they’d probably walk away going “Wow, that guy is loud.” And they’d be right because in all honesty, Gordon is really loud.

But there’s more to Gordon than just being incredibly loud at almost all times. Gordon is a Regional Bureau Chief within the FBI, and obtained this position after being the Deputy Director of the Criminal Investigation Division. In order to have reached these positions, he would’ve additionally gone through the required training in order to join the FBI and spent time as an agent. In other words, despite being a candidate for the loudest FBI agent in history, his loudness doesn’t appear to have any effect on his ability to do his job, and do his job well.

In addition to handling normal cases, Gordon’s division also seems to handle cases that are a bit out there. Called Blue Rose cases, these cases seem to feature supernatural or otherworldly elements, though no official explanation of the term is given. Since his department deals with these cases, Gordon’s had some experience with weird things happening. How he reacts to these things can best be seen by the reappearance of Agent Phillip Jeffries. One day, Agent Jeffries walks into Gordon’s office after disappearing for two years and begins rambling. Gordon seems surprised at first, only to regard Jeffries vanishing from the chair he was sitting in, the front desk having zero record of Jeffries entering the building, and the disappearance of Agent Desmond being reported at the same time with what could best be described as a look of mild confusion rather than outright shock. In addition to this, another seemingly odd element that Gordon is okay with is the fact that Cooper has visions. Suffice to say, it seems that Gordon can still be thrown off by weird things happening, but is more desensitized to it than one might expect.

Going over how Gordon actually runs his department and manages his agents also reveals quite a bit about Gordon. Despite being loud, Gordon can be difficult to understand. Between his hearing problems and his apparent love of coded messages, he can leave his own agents and the rest of the Bureau completely baffled at times. But once one looks past that, Gordon is a pretty good boss to have. He makes sure his agents are prepared (the amount of information conveyed to Agent Desmond in the movie covers everything from the behavior of local law enforcement to drugs being involved to the local sheriff’s uncle being in federal prison). He has his agents back if they get in trouble (numerous examples between the show and Coop’s biography ranging from going above and beyond to support Coop after the stabbing, backing Cooper during the IA investigation, immediately sending someone to investigate Desmond’s disappearance, dispatching Albert back to Twin Peaks immediately after Cooper was shot, and so on). He’s also a fair boss and doesn’t seem to play favorites. When Albert has his lights punched out by Sherriff Truman, he files a complaint with Gordon. Rather than just process the complaint, Gordon attempts to get Coop’s opinion on the incident, which is given, and the situation is apparently resolved without Truman losing his badge, the case being filed with the U.S. Attorney as per Albert’s wishes, and with no visible ill will between any of the parties involved. In short, for the most part, Gordon is the type of boss that many people would want to work for. He gives his coworkers all the tools needed to succeed (except sometimes they’re in code) and supports them to the best of his ability if needed.

Despite dealing with all this, Gordon still has time to interact with nonFBI personnel, so it’s important to also look at how he acts in everyday situations. Once again, hearing issues and having his volume cranked up to 11 aside; Gordon can actually handle himself well socially for the most part. He seems to make friends rather easily, quickly befriending Coop’s father, the Twin Peaks Sherriff’s Department, and Shelly Johnson soon after meeting each of them. Occasional misunderstandings do occur, such as the time Gordon met Bobby Briggs, which resulted in Gordon completely misunderstanding Bobby’s tone and thinking that Bobby had genuinely never seen a kiss before (when in reality Bobby wanted to know why this guy was kissing the woman he was seeing). It is also important to note that Gordon doesn’t seem to dwell on whether or not he misinterpreted something and simply moves on with the conversation when these incidents occur.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths:
-FBI
Once again, Gordon has gone through all the necessary training, spent time as an agent, and has worked his way through the ranks of the FBI. So not only does he have agent skills, he also seems to have pretty good management skills.
-Attentive
Gordon is apparently really on the ball when it comes to work related information, and makes sure his agents know everything needed to work a case regardless of how trivial some of the details may initially seem.
-Supportive
In the words of Dale Cooper, “Gordon has really gone to bat for me,” and as listed above in the personality section there are plenty of examples of this.

In Between:
-Loud
This isn’t exactly a weakness because Gordon is good at making sure he’s heard. On the other hand, it’s not exactly a strength because Gordon sometimes says things that probably weren’t meant for everyone to hear (such as broadcasting his feelings towards Shelly to the entirety of the diner and probably to everyone outside the diner as well).
-Code
Gordon’s love of code is a good way to keep information secret, but can unfortunately be cryptic to the point of no one getting it but him.

Weaknesses:
-Hearing
Aside from Shelly, Gordon really can’t hear anything without his hearing aids being at max volume and the other person shouting.
-Mishearing
Even with the above solution, Gordon still mishears things. A lot. And doesn’t seem particularly interested in finding out what he missed (the conversation with Bobby, yelling OREGON when Desmond says “Okay, Gordon”)

HELLO! IS THIS THING ON? CAN YOU HEAR ME?

[The voice speaking appears to be yelling as loudly as possible into the receiver, and sounds a little confused about his current situation.]

I’VE NEVER SEEN A PHONE LIKE THIS, SO I’M NOT SURE IF THIS CALL IS EVEN GOING OUT. IF ANYONE CAN HEAR THIS, I THINK I’VE BEEN KIDNAPPED. IT’S THE DAMNDEST THING THOUGH. I DON’T REMEMBER BEING KIDNAPPED. OR MY MOTHER LOOKING LIKE THAT! ALSO, WHAT KIND OF KIDNAPPING COMES WITH A FREE PET?

[There’s a brief pause before the silence is broken by more yelling.]

THOUGH I’M NOT SURE EXACTLY WHAT THIS THING IS. IT DOESN’T LOOK LIKE ANY ANIMAL I’VE EVER SEEN. SEEMS PRETTY QUIET TOO. THEN AGAIN, THE MYSTERY PET ISN’T REALLY THE PROBLEM HERE. IF ANYONE IS RECEIVING THIS PLEASE SAY SOMETHING AND LET ME KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON. OR TELL ME HOW TO GET IN TOUCH WITH SOMEONE WHO DOES. PREFERABLY THE POLICE OR THE NEAREST FIELD OFFICE. TELL THEM REGIONAL BUREAU CHIEF GORDON COLE WOULD LIKE TO SPEAK WITH THEM AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THANK YOU.

Third Person Sample:
Before stepping out onto Route 29, which was the direction the nice people on his new TV phone told him to go, Gordon turned and took one last look at New Bark Town and the other people he had met today. They seemed like a nice enough group; a shame he couldn’t hear most of what they said though. There was something about Gordon making too much toys which didn’t make any sense at all. He was an FBI agent, not a toymaker. Oh well, better say goodbye to everyone before he heads out.

“I’M GOING TO GO NOW. IT WAS NICE MEETING YOU ALL. YOU ALL SEEM TO BE MAKING THE BEST OF A BAD SITUATION WHICH IS GOOD, BUT DON’T WORRY. ONCE I GET IN CONTACT WITH LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT, I’M SURE WE’LL BE ABLE TO RESOLVE THIS IN NO TIME AT ALL AND GET EVERYONE BACK WHERE THEY BELONG. ONCE AGAIN, DON’T WORRY, I’M SURE WE’LL GET THIS CLEARED UP AND NO ONE WILL REAPPEAR IN MY OFFICE TWO YEARS FROM NOW. OKAY? I’M GOING NOW WITH MY WHATEVER THIS THING IS!”

What exactly was this thing? Gordon hunkered down to get a closer look at his new Whismur. Didn’t look like anything he’d seen before. It had ears like a rabbit, but definitely wasn’t a rabbit, and those eyes, were they even eyes? Or tattoos? Didn’t look like there was a collar either. Hmm. Well, the people in New Bark Town were probably as new to this as he was, so they probably couldn’t help. Out of options, Gordon decided to address the Whismur by yelling in its face.

“SO LITTLE FELLOW WHAT ARE YOU? YOU LOOK KINDA LIKE A BUNNY BUT YOU’RE NOT, ARE YOU?”

Startled by its trainer yelling right in its face, Whismur began to scream. And continued screaming at the volume of a jet engine for the next few minutes before passing out into the dirt. Gordon just stared with a slight smile on his face.

“WOW! YOU’RE REALLY LOUD. NOT THAT YOU CAN HEAR ME RIGHT NOW, BUT I COULD HEAR YOU PERFECTLY JUST NOW! I THINK WE’RE GOING TO GET ALONG GREAT! DON’T BE ALARMED BUT I’M GOING TO PICK YOU UP AND CARRY YOU WITH ME UNTIL YOU WAKE UP. OKAY, BUDDY? OR AT LEAST UNTIL I GET TIRED.”

Character
Name: Hanabusa Aidou
Series: Vampire Knight
Timeline: Chapter 8
Canon Resource Links: Aidou @ Vampire Knight wiki | Vampire Knight @ Wikipedia

Personality:

Aidou has a lot of energy and loves to be the center of attention. He’s the type to flirt with the girls who idolize him while others ignore them. Sometimes he even goes too far with the flirting and goes around asking questions that might hint that he’s actually a vampire. This behavior is often disapproved by others and gets him into trouble a lot. He might also appear rather childish. If things don’t go the way he wants them to or if he doesn’t get what he wants he might throw a tantrum. The childishness also shows up in the form of mischief. He’s been shown to give attention in various ways to one particular girl just to make the others jealous and angry at her (mostly for his own amusement).

He’s rather brash. If he has an opinion he wants to say he will, even if it might anger people. There’s only a few he doesn’t want to anger or say bad things about. In fact, if there isn’t anyone he respects around he might just go ahead and say things that he thinks rather than tone things down and keep them inside. It’s also when he might just act like he’s the ruler of the place, placing himself above others and expecting people to do what he wants them to do. He’s grown up as a noble vampire, so he’s used to getting what it wants and when he wants. It’s hard for him to accept “no” as an answer.

Under the childish behavior there’s also a more adult like personality. Aidou can be very serious when he really wants to be. Then he actually becomes “cold as ice” as his elemental powers might imply. He doesn’t joke around or flirt with anyone. While his childish tantrums aren’t dangerous, he’s deadly when he’s serious. If he gets annoyed, he expresses his feelings through actions and words that actually sting. The worst part about this is that he might just suddenly shift from happy and cheerful to cold and serious without any warnings.

Even if he seems like a person who only cares about himself, he's really devoted to his friends. He would do anything to help and protect them. If someone disrespects them he gets really annoyed - especially it the person insulted is Kaname Kuran. Their leader, the pureblood, is a special case. Aidou respects him the most and wishes to be noticed by him. He even gets ridiculously jealous if someone gets more attention than he does.

Aidou’s also highly observant. He usually notices things others might not and keeps the information a secret - either because it’s more convenient or because he might be able to use it later on. He’s also rather curious. If he notices something interesting (like a smell of blood in the air) he wants to find out everything about it (whose it is, where does it come from) and if he doesn’t get information, it will start bothering him. Usually he drops the chase if someone he respects tells him to, but he would still keep observing his surroundings to see if he can find any leads on it.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

Strengths

+ Self-esteem. He trusts himself and his own skills.
+ Observation skills. He notices things others might overlook.
+ Stubborn. He doesn't give up easily if he wants to achieve something.
+ Loyal. He won't betray anyone who he trusts and respects.

Weaknesses

- Childish. He sometimes fails to act his own age.
- Spoiled brat. If he doesn’t get what he wants he gets moody.
- Temperamental. He’s easily angered.
- Mood swings. His mood might just abruptly change.

[The feed opens to a very, very frustrated person.]

You've got to be kidding me. I was able to go back home for five minutes and didn't even get to see Kaname-sama and then they bring back here! Make up your damn mind! [He calms down just slightly to pay attention to something off-screen.] Not only that, my Pokémon changed to a polar bear that seems to have a flu all the time.

[Aidou moves the camera a little. There's a Cubchoo with an icy, runny nose, looking at the camera innocently.] Is he even going to be alright in this weather?

[Then he looks back at the camera and sighs.]

I guess I'll have to start traveling again. Not looking forward to that.

[Is this a hint to anyone who might remembered him to pick him up? Maybe. He'll end the feed here anyway.]

Third Person Sample:

There were a lot of things in Johto that annoyed Aidou. He didn't like the way he was brought into the world (again), nor did he like that his Pokémon changed again... not that he felt especially attached to the previous one, but he had just gotten used to it anyway. On top of that, he was a human once again, which was never a good thing. These were just the tip of the iceberg as he could think of new things he didn't like all the time.

The biggest thing that made him annoyed right now, however, was the fact that his occupation had changed. Actually, it might have been more creepy than annoying, but it was a big issue, still.

"HOW THE HECK AM I SUPPOSED TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT?!"

This yell could most likely be heard all the way to Route 29. Aidou had just checked his bag to see if he had the same things he had before and found a handbook on Breeding. That's right, he was a now a breeder. Something he didn't quite want to think about.

"I'd rather be forced to fight those Gym-whatever-leaders than this! I'm not doing this!" he stated and tossed the guide back to his bag. Why didn't he throw it to the garbage bin? Well, just in case he couldn't avoid his occupation for some reason. Then he would need the guide.

Until then, he wouldn't open it. He didn't want to know anything about it. Pokémon should just do their thing by themselves! It's not Aidou's business one way or another.

Cubchoo looks at his trainer, tilting his head. Were all humans like this? He approaches Aidou and puts a paw on his leg, making the boy look at the Pokémon. Right... Aidou was in the middle of something else before this happened. The boy sighs.

"Let's go. It's not use staying in this town any longer than this."

Cubchoo nods and the two start heading towards the exit that leads to Route 29.

Personality: Most of the traits you get from Nobita at first glance are certainly negative ones. He doesn't like to fight at all, and mostly tries to run away from bullies. He's often late to school, and sleeps in class a lot, so he naturally gets low grades. And his attempts to run away from bullies or get to school on time are hindered by his natural clumsiness and lack of athletic ability.

However, Nobita actually has an adventurous streak, as well as a courage one would not expect of him. When his friends are threatened, he immediately steps up to protect them. Not only that, but he has also been known to stand up to the local bully when the safety of others is at stake, or he is just angry enough. Once he gets into protective mode, his cowardliness seems to disappear almost like magic, and he will act almost fearless in defense of his friends-especially Shizuka, his love interest.

Nobita is also not as stupid as he looks. While he's definitely lazy, he can actually do quite well on his schoolwork if properly motivated, possibly by one of Doraemon's gadgets. He's also shown an ability to think up clever plans for dealing with various enemies, from alien viruses capable of possessing all sorts of objects to evil demons from alternate dimensions.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths
Shooting: Nobita is a really, really good shot. In one of the movies, he shot a single tin can with all six bullets from one gun. Unfortunately, this skill isn't really useful in his daily life.

Cat's Cradle: Nobita is also very skilled with the Cat's Cradle game. This is even more useless, but he has used it to endear him to others several times.

Falling asleep: Nobita can fall asleep anytime, anywhere, just by counting to three. Yeah...it's still useful at times though, considering all the weird places he's been.

Used to dealing with weird things: After all the weird things he's seen in the movie stories, he's less likely to be surprised by anything. Sure, he may still be frightened, but he now knows how to deal with all sorts of dangers.

Adventurous: Nobita actually loves adventure a lot. Sure, he loves it even more when nothing dangerous actually happens, but there's just a part of him that loves exploring.

Loyalty: Nobita is extremely loyal to his friends. Threaten one of them, and he will do his best to stop that threat. This applies to everyone, even people he's just met who seem nice.

Sense of justice: Nobita has a strong sense of right and wrong, and when given the choice, will always choose the path of right. He'll never do questionable moral acts, no matter the gain to him.

Befriending animals: Nobita seems to be very good at befriending animals of all sorts. He just acts kind to them, and they usually repay him.

Weaknesses
Laziness: A lot of the things Nobita decides not to do, he decides not to do because he's too lazy to. He'd rather just sleep or lie around and read comics, thank you very much.

Cowardice: Most of the time, Nobita is a coward, who would rather run away from a threat than face it. However...see "Loyalty," above.

Clumsiness: Nobita is clumsy all the time. If there is something that can be tripped over, he will trip over it.

Dependence on Doraemon: Most of the time, Nobita will ask Doraemon for a solution to any problem that appears. He has shown the ability to be independent, but most of the time prefers to rely on the futuristic robotic cat.

Tenderheartedness: Nobita is rather tenderhearted, and he can't resist helping an animal in trouble, even if he ends up in trouble for his assistance.

[The video that appears on screen shows nothing but blackness. However, Nobita's voice can be clearly heard.]

Tamashii! I thought I'd never see you again! I couldn't stop thinking about you, and Piisuke, and Sobo, and Horu, and Piikayu! Wait...why are only you here?

[There is the sound of sudden rustling, and the Pokegear is pulled out of Nobita's pocket and held so that viewers can see his face.]

Hi everyone! Nobi Nobita is back! [He strikes a pose to show just how cool he is.]

And has anyone seen my other Pokemon? They must be so scared and alone right now! I'd be so happy if you could help!

Third Person Sample:
Nobita tapped his foot impatiently at the console. His Pokemon were going to be sent over! At last! Part of him wondered why he didn't miss his friends as much anymore. Maybe because this time he knew there was a way back? Even if he still wasn't quite sure what that way actually was.

However, right now, the friends he wanted to see were his Pokemon friends. As he waited impatiently, a set of Pokeballs finally appeared, and he quickly grabbed them, before running outside to release them. Immediately, he was almost completely buried in a swarm of affection.

"Sobo! Horu! You've grown so much! You're not babies anymore, are you?" he cooed affectionately at the Darumaka clinging to his chest and the Diglett snuggled against his knee. "You're such good children, waiting for me all this time!"

A pair of stingers tapped his shoulder lightly, while a damp weight laid itself on his other shoulder. "Hehe!" he laughed. "Don't worry, Piikayu, Piisuke, I haven't forgotten about you either! You looked after each other, right? I'm so glad..." Tears were visibly trickling down his face now, and he didn't even care.

"Oh, I missed you. I missed all of you so much..."

Tamashii, who had been sitting somewhat to the side, also moved closer now, and Nobita happily pulled her into the cuddle-pile. He was back. And he had an adventure to go on too!

"Come on guys! There's still so much stuff we didn't do before the first time I disappeared! And now we need to hurry up and get it done!" He straightened himself up, his Pokemon slowly disentangling themselves from his body. After replacing Piisuke in his Pokeball, the boy grinned and set out on the next path. It was surprising, how different it was to return to a place, even if your method of arrival had been exactly the same.

Character
Name: Gamzee Makara
Series: Homestuck
Timeline: After dragging off Sol's body when Rose and Dave arrive
Canon Resource Links: Gamzee Homestuck

Personality: Once upon a time there was the chillest motherfucking troll you could ever meet. Everything was sparkles and rainbows and miracles and life was beautiful. Life was miracles man, they were all over the place. So long as you believed, they were right there in front of you being awesome. No matter what was said to him, no matter what happened, no matter that he was all by himself and ignored or insulted, everything was chill. Because everything was just so awesome in the world and it was perfect in his eyes. His lusus was never there for him, but he would believe and be optimistic that he would come home soon. His friends insulted him and hardly ever wanted to put up with him at times, but it was all cool because they weren't serious. Even the little imps were chill, slammin pies and the wicked elixer with him and just chillin. Motherfucking miracles man. It was most of his life spent this way, completely serene and oblivious to all the bad shit around him thanks to the intoxication of his sopor pies distorting his mind and keeping him high as a kite. He was a pushover to the extreme, always letting anyone say or do anything with little to no protest and just laughing it off after. For that time, he was probably the nicest guy you could meet.

But then there were no more pies. The miracles were shown to be a lie, everything he believed in was falling down around him. And without the pies, came the clarity. He had been poisoning himself. Poisoning himself the whole time, and his "friends" were just letting him do it. And shit got real.

The most obvious aspect of Gamzee's personality is his mental instability thanks to coming down from his life long high. He's overcome with emotions he never realized that he had and not sure what to do with them all. Everything he believed in was shattered with one shitty youtube video and made him question his own faith, the one thing he lived by more than anything else. And worst of all it made him question his own path in life and what he was entitled to by blood. Through all of the confusion and rage he came to the conclusion that he was both the mirthful messiahs and it was his job to kill everyone and use their blood as his paint and their bones as his special stardust. Though in reality even he knows that it's more of an early mid-life crisis issue and he just wasn't sure what he was supposed to do with himself or even believe in. Though Karkat managed to subdue most of this aspect with shoosh paps and becoming his moirail, it's still obvious that Gamzee's not all that stable as he continues to collect the dead bodies of his friends and even goes as far as bottling their blood to sell as bogus potions.

Gamzee is calm most of the time, almost to a horrifying degree if he's in murder mode, but since sobering up he's no longer whimsical like before. He can silently observe and judge situations as he sees fit, sometimes with skewed logic and other times with spot on analysis. He's highly intelligent when it comes down to it, able to plan out a situation and manipulate people to do things for him when he knows he's unable to get away with them himself, as is shown when he toyed with Terezi in order to keep himself under cover while avoiding Kanaya. The reinstated laid back attitude is even more noticeable after the murder rage drains out of him as he seems to be in a constant state of relaxed despite the instability still being present. Though his way of speaking still matches his text, too quiet sometimes and too loud others, he manages to pull it off without sounding angry unless someone makes the wrong move.

Which one will never know if they might do or not, because as his trollian tag states he tends to be rather capricious no matter if he's high or sober. It's almost impossible to read his actions or even make sense of them, he does whatever he feels like at the time because that's just what feels right to him. Be it chilling out or going on a murder rage, he rarely questions his own actions despite questioning his religeous beliefs. And anyone who tried to question his actions would just get cryptic answers usually involving miracles, honking or him just laughing at them. There is no reason for anything, it's as simple as he does what he wants to do and what that happens to be is usually impossible to predict until he does it. In this aspect he can be dangerous, flipping his mood at the drop of a hat if one isn't careful around him, but at the same time able to go right back to being chill if he just decides to brush something off after scaring the shit out of someone. But at the same time he can be rather vengeful and uncaring of who it effects. Just because Dave ruined his religeon for him he went and made Dave's entire universe "terminal" by using his chucklevoodoo powers to fuck with their dreamselves and start the chain of events that lead to everyone being fucked over. Though even then he shows his capricious side as in that same conversation he admits that he likes Dave and is thankful to him for showing him the truth.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths:
Loyal; As of going sober, this really only applies to Karkat and maybe Tavros. Gamzee cares about those close to him and would even go as far as killing for them without any problem whatsoever. No matter how unpredictable he may be, if someone manages to get close enough for him to really care about them then he will do anything it takes to keep them safe.
Laid back; Most of the time nothing bothers him, he's chill and able to take things in stride no matter what's going on around him. This lets him keep a level head even with things might be going to shit, which is a good trait with how rare it is.

Weaknesses:
Unstable; Gamzee's mental condition is questionable at best, and without someone constantly keeping an eye on him there's no telling if and when he could snap and go psycho again.
Unpredictable; There's no way even allies could depend on him because he does shit when and if he feels like it, changing his mind at the drop of a hat even if it would put others in danger.
Apathetic; The bad part of being laid back is he honestly just doesn't care sometimes. Someone's about to be murdered? Not his problem, they probably brought it on themselves.

Basically, everything about Gamzee is a double edged sword. All of his good traits can be bad and all of his bad traits can be good, depending on his mood and the situation. It's in his nature to flip flop as he sees fit, so while being chill can be good in one situation it could cause someone their life in another. While being loyal is good for his friends, he doesn't care enough to make many friends in the first place so that alone is limited. And even then, that loyalty can turn dangerous if his unstable mind decides that something is bad for one of his friends when it's really not something they would want him to step in on.

Third Person Sample: Gamzee had no idea what he had just eaten, but the only complaint from him about it was that there just wasn't enough. He had managed to catch one of those birds, and thanks to lil Solsis, but unfortunately when the subject of eating said bird came up the lil sis apparently flipped some shit and dived into his bag to pull out that weird looking box. Why the hell did humans even put food in boxes like that anyways? How was someone supposed to know what it was meant to be when it looks like some weird decoration? Luckily any wandering thoughts of eating the bird anyways were wiped from his mind by a distraction.

That little green blob was staring at the yellow on his shirt curiously, getting close enough to sniff it but being confused at the odd smell. The realization hit him then, and the laugh that followed startled Solosis and made the poor thing tumble backwards.

"Shiiit man.... Can you see the motherfucking IRONY all up in this bitch? Got my Solsis here checking out the blood from my Solbro. Motherfucking psychic too. Just like my mustard blooded brother."

Solosis' look of curiosity turned immediately to panick at the mention of blood, only causing Gamzee to laugh harder.

"Don't all be like that. Don't be getting your little slime pusher all flipping the wicked shit. I didn't even kill that one. He up and motherfucking exploded on his own. Made a real mess of that putrid shit everywhere. Just got caught doing a little motherfucking cleaning up. And adding to my collection. HONK."

The little pokemon still looked mildly distressed, but Gamzee was sprawled back chuckling to himself and didn't seem to mean any harm so she relaxed. Once Gamzee's amusement finally faded, he gave his shirt a thoughtful look. The yellow really did look like a mess and the smell was kind of starting to annoy him. He rolled onto his stomach, not even really caring as Solosis made herself comfortable on his head between his horns, and started digging around in the bag he'd dragged with him. He knew he saw some sort of clothing in there and he was right, pulling it out and not even caring what it was. His horns protected Solosis from falling off when he removed his shirt and pulled on a fresh one, his pants next to join the pile of black and yellow on the ground. He gave no mind to the clinking noise from one of his pockets, shit he hadn't had time to captchalogue before ending up in this weird fucking place.

"Like someone all up and just motherfucking knew I'd be a mess of wicked ass miracles." A claw reached up to poke at Solosis, not too hard since he didn't know what the hell was holding all that slime in. "Just like they motherfucking knew I couldn't eat you. Not with that slime shit you all up and got as a body. Too many bad motherfucking memories. You might rot my thinkpan."

For a long while after that, Gamzee did nothing but sit there and stare at his pile of clothes with a blank expression on his face. But it wasn't the clothing he was seeing, not by far really. It was the body that had caused all that, the one meant to be added to his collection of heads. He hadn't had the time to form the face into the expression he had wanted when he first decapitated it, too busy collecting all that mustard shit into bottles of wicked bitchtits potions. He'd hadn't even stashed it away with the other ones, what if someone found it and did something stupid like throw it away? Not to mention he still had to grab up Spidersis's body and add it with the rest. So much motherfucking work gone to waste. Not like there was really anything to do about it, no use fixating all his thinkpan's capacity on something that he couldn't change. There was a world of motherfucking real life miracles at his fingers and he had to dip into that wicked shit and see what it has to offer.

By the time he had come out of his daze, Solosis was already napping on his head and the sun was setting. That was fine, he liked wandering at night better anyways. The sun kind of freaked him the fuck out earlier, but it was some weakass star that didn't hold a flame against the scorching Alternian sun so it wasn't so bad. He scooped up his clothes and stuffed them into the bag, not giving a single fuck if the dried blood got over the other stuff in there, and made his way back to the town. He remembered a water pool or something there and these new clothes were too uncomfortable to be used for longer than he had to. Cleaning wasn't something he liked doing, but it was that or be stuck with some weird fucking underwear that didn't even fit right.

Character
Name: Italy Romano (Lovino Vargas)
Series: Axis Powers Hetalia
Timeline: 1559 within the Hetalia comics, it would place Romano somewhere around the time that France has attempted his fourth kidnapping. If it's okay, I would love for him to remember his time in Route.
Canon Resource Links:

Hetalia summary of the facts: Italy Romano is the personification of the entire Southern Italian region, including (at this time period) The Kingdom of Naples and The Kingdom of Sicily. He is a direct descendent of Ancient Rome, a nation whom he considers to be his grandfather. Romano has a younger brother named Veneziano and who represents the northern half of their country, particularly Venice. Romano and Veneziano lived together until the death of their grandfather. They were separated and lived in their own houses or with other invading countries. When the brothers met again, Romano preferred to ignore his existence and bullied him (along with the other, older nations).

While they were apart, Romano lived by himself and with his invaders, during which he because the Kingdom of Naples (and the Kingdom of Sicily). After the Italian Wars and Austria’s secured place as a European power, Austria sent him to live with Spain because of his difficult personality. For several years afterward, Spain fought to maintain control over Southern Italy. Spain had to fight off France and the growing Ottoman Empire. He’s been living as a henchman and servant to Spain, doing his best with his chores when he felt like them and attempting to learn the Spanish language.

Historically, this would place Romano right at the time of the signing of The Peace of Cateau-Cambresis. And here's a link to the Kingdom of Naples.

Personality:

At his young (physical) age, Italy Romano doesn’t show the same hard-boiled suspicion or the deep-rooted fear he displays towards certain countries. When he’s much older, he becomes the jaded adult in the modern comics. However in the 1550s, he’s only a child – and a very stubborn child as well. Romano knows that he is the descendent of the Roman Empire and he takes great pride in the fact. He may see himself as inferior to his brother, but as far as he is concerned he is superior to most of the other countries since he did inherit the lands and fame of the previous Roman Empire. Romano carries himself like royalty – though under Spain’s command he is learning some level of humility. He is startled and scared easily by those bigger than him, but he won’t cower without a small and rather pitiful struggle. Since he is aware that most large people and nations are only seeking him for his inheritance, he’s slowly grown cynical and distrustful of others and is suspicious of anyone who seems even mildly interested in him.

Along with his bleak view of the world, he understands his position in it and won’t forget to remind others that he is Italy and therefore the coveted prize of Europe.
His inheritance is the only thing he holds with any pride (and that small bit of pride he flaunts as often as he pleases). Otherwise he feels useless in comparison to his younger brother. He dwells on these melancholy thoughts in privacy, though he may not be able to tell if anyone is listening in on his musings (or if anyone happens to be lurking behind him until the last minute).

Romano relies a lot on Spain, even though he believes that Spain has little interest in him and more in what he has. Regardless he does feel a sort of parental kinship towards Spain, mostly displayed through violent behavior (like head butting or punching to get his way). He knows that he can bully Spain because Spain hasn’t been very firm with him. Even though he disrespects Spain outwardly, Romano does look up to Spain in some ways. He takes up a lot of Spain’s habits, though he never notices, and he often rushes to Spain’s defense. In actuality, the sort of love he shows Spain is very platonic. He tries to be flirtatious with older women but he becomes shy and unresponsive if he is taken seriously in his childish declarations of love.

Romano’s a child who gladly keeps to himself. He throws tantrums and acts out when his way hasn't been accepted. When he does interact with others, he tends to be a little bit of a bully (and entirely a brat). He chooses not to speak often, because he doesn’t see the point in talking to people he believes aren’t worth his time, but he often gets into arguments when he does decide to open his mouth. He refuses to back down from an argument even when he is losing. The only way he’ll stop is if he’s threatened, which is a very easy thing to do since he is quite fearful of most things.

While Romano may be small (about the height of the "average" six year old) he has been independent for a long time, longer even than his brother. As one of the oldest grandchildren of the Roman Empire, he has been around since before the fall of Rome. He can carry himself within a crowd of his elders, he can speak publicly, he knows how to (barely) take care of himself. Despite it all, Romano is incredibly lazy. If he can find someone else to perform chores and other activities for him, he would gladly appoint them. If he’s called out on his laziness, he will do everything he can to prove them wrong – and he may end up hurting himself. Romano likes to believe that he is the very best henchmen (or person) in the world, even if the opposite is incredibly true.

Overall, Romano is still a child. He behaves and carries himself like a child would, though he often carries himself as an adult. He often sways between maturity and immaturity, as the situation commands it.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Romano has no strengths to speak of. As the personification of Southern Italy, he has an extended lifespan. As of 1556, he has existed as ‘Romano’ for more than 1000 years. He has less experience as a Kingdom than as a collection of city states. Along with his extended lifespan, Romano is unable to become infected with common human illnesses. The only times he becomes sick is when his economy has taken a hit. Yet, he is still affected by diseases that have been common amongst his people for long periods of time. For instance he would have been susceptible to tarantism.

He’s a great sprinter if the need ever arises, especially when running away from enemies. He also has some experience with pick pocketing, though because of his clumsiness he isn’t able to take very much. He has a habit of lying to save him from embarrassment. He’s able to travel on his own (though protecting himself from enemies is a completely different matter).

Romano’s unable to perform household chores without putting himself at risk of falling bookshelves and other heavy objects. Because of his small size, he is fearful of people (and objects) much bigger than he is. He does not think before he speaks, causing him to fall into more trouble than before and revealing that he’s filled with more hot air than he is strength. Romano lies frequently but he is more often caught in his lies than they are believed. Even if he is caught, he refuses to admit that he was wrong, insisting that what he said was correct.

First Person Sample:

Bulbasaur! Bulba! Bulbasaur!! Help, please! Help! My trainer's gotten himself sick and I don't know what to do!

[It may be a quadreped, but Bulbasaur was handling the pokegear like a pro. Perhaps it was due to the fact that it learned how to function the machine through necessity. It carries the gear with its vines and swings the camera towards a pudgy little boy with flushed cheeks and the tell-tale evidence that he'd eaten something he should not have eaten. Romano groans and reaches out to a memory far away.]

It hurts... damn it, you bastard... you've come to finish me off...

[The gear begins to shake slightly as it swings back to a tearful, Bulbasaur face. It makes its final plea! This is a plea for all to hear!!]

Saur! Saur!! Bulbabulba! Please! This is urgent!! He's not making sense anymore!

Third Person Sample:

Romano just wanted to make sure that it was real. After all, wouldn't anyone be curious of the giant plant growing out of their pokemon's back? It was strange enough that pokemon existed. Stranger still that he had come to this place. He didn't need to have this extra bit of unbelievably, strangest, weird-ass thing happening to him! All he had to do was make sure that it was a real plant and not just some human-eating-plant-monster-that-attacked-people-at-night-for-no-damn-reason. It was entirely possible that it was a monster plant growing out of his Ivysaur.

After all, the pokedex told him that there were pokemon that could do that. And he was damn sure that he read a book once before about plants that ate people and animals. So it was entirely possible that that plant was trying to either (a) eat his pokemon or (b) eat him ... and his pokemon. And since Romano wanted neither himself (nor his pokemon) to become plant food, Romano had to take matters into his own hands.

With as much stealth as he could muster, Romano inched closer and closer to his sleeping pokemon. He had decided that night time would be the best time for checking it out. Plants slept at night. So, it obviously meant that plant pokemon slept at night too. He crept closer, step by tiny step, his little feet barely making a noise on the tiled floor of the Pokemon Center.
Before him slept his Ivysaur, completely unaware of its surroundings - as it should be, Romano thought. Why should it believe that anything bad would happen? Not that anything bad was going to happen to Ivysaur -- which wasn't to say that anything bad would happen to Romano. (God forbid).

He stopped himself nearly a foot away from Ivysaur's snoring poké-self and reached -- reached -- reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeached over to touch the very tips of the bloomed flower -- then lost his footing and fell face first onto the floor. There were no tears yet. He could feel the tears stinging his eyes as he lay there on the tile floor, trying hard not to cry due to the pain (and the fear of the plant being able to sense said fear and getting ready to eat him...).He felt Ivysaur get up from its comfortable resting spot and moved to lie down beside Romano. It sat as close as it could, laying one clawed paw on Romano's back. "Sauuuuuuur...."

"D-Don't you chastise me!" He still hadn't moved. It was comfortable, actually. "If you have any sort of harzardous pokemon-eating plant growing out of you back you'd say something, right? And you better not have one, damn it, otherwise I'll -- do something."

Ivysaur hadn't bothered to reply to Romano's question. It dozed right back to sleep.

"Hey. Hey! Listen when people are talking to you!!"

Hell Girl on Wikipedia
Ai Enma
Hell Girl Wiki
Hell Girl Tv tropes

Personality:

Ai is a very quiet girl. She very rarely speaks in anything but a quiet emotionless tone, her face betraying little to no emotion either. This is because Ai has spent the last four hundred or so years as the Hell Girl, being forced to cut off her emotions and seeing the very worst humanity has to offer on a nightly basis. She has become numb to it. Recently however she’s started to show more emotions, thanks to finally putting her cousins betrayal behind her at the end of season one. She still doesn’t show many emotions, but it’s more likely that you’ll see her smile or seem amused.

Hatred is an emotion Ai has a great deal of familiarity with though. And revenge and rage are two things she understands very well. She can be, quite frankly, a terrible, terrible person if someone hurts her. She set fire to and killed the entire village that killed her and her family. She attacked a man and his daughter when she found out they were descendents of her cousin who betrayed her and helped the town. Going as far as to show the little girl illusions of her dead mother and other horrors, to try and convince her to send her father to Hell. Even when she finally made her peace with the fact that her cousin didn’t want to betray her, she burnt down the temple he’d built in her honour.

Ai however has a tendency to sacrifice herself for other people, even with all the hatred she holds. If someone reminds her of her own situation, she might step in. A young boy being blamed for her services by his town, she refused to send him to hell. For that she was brought back to life and after that, beaten to death by a mob. In the third season she ends up sacrificing her freedom to take her replacements place after her replacement has broken the rules and is going to be sent to Hell. She exchanges herself for her and will now be serving as the Hell Girl forever.

She has a small group of companions that she’s collected over the years. They help her with her duties and try to look out for her. She’s slightly more talkative to them, slightly. But she cares about them.

Ai is fascinated by little things, staring at flowers or cherries or playing marbles for long amounts of time. She has a lot of patience and doesn’t get bored easily. She’s used to being alone with little to do, so she finds ways to occupy herself.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

Strengths:
-Determined: Good or bad, if she’s decided on something, then it will happen.
-Loyal: If you do gain her trust and loyalty, you will not be betrayed.
-Isolation: She’s used to being alone and doesn’t have to rely on people even if she doesn’t have powers.
-Patient: Very, very patient.
-Calm: Unless it directly affects her or someone she knows. Horrible things aren’t strange to her. It takes a lot to rattle her.

Weaknesses:
-Temper: Repressing your emotions for years doesn’t help anger issues. She hates people easily.
-Been dead for 400 or so years: Being human again will be hard for her. She hasn’t had to worry about things like eating or sleeping for a while now. Also no powers will take a while to get used to.
-Social Skills: She ….really doesn’t have many. She can do her monologues as her job as the Hell Girl requires, but actual conversation isn’t really something she does a lot. And so she’s not very good at it.
-Trust Issues: She doesn’t trust many people thanks to her past.
-Cynical: She’s also spent the last years sending people to Hell on other peoples requests. She really has seen the worst of humanity, over and over again. She doesn’t have faith in humanity at all. Believes the worst of people

Text:

What happens when people die here? They say it’s impossible, but that is impossible as well.

Is there a Hell in this world for people to go to? Or is this world some version of the afterlife itself? And if we win enough badges do we get to go home, or does it never end?

I have duties I need to attend to in my own world. I cannot be absent for a long period of time or people will suffer for it. Whoever brought me here might as well.

The Lord of Hell is not forgiving.

Third Person Sample:

After being kicked out of a house, with only a backpack and a strange woman’s assurance that this was all normal, Ai was sitting in the branches of a tree. She’d had to climb up normally instead of teleporting, because like all her other powers, her teleportation seemed to have stop working. It probably had something to do with the fact that somehow, she was alive again.

She sat quietly in the tree branches and tried to figure out where she was and what was going on. So far nothing she could think of made any sense. The Lord of Hell wouldn’t have sent her away, not after he’d trapped her in another contract. And the last time she’d been human, she didn’t remember her companions. But she had no trouble remembering them now. It might have been better if she couldn’t remember them though. At least she wouldn’t have to worry about them trying to find her and getting trapped like she was.

And she was trapped. Stripped of her powers, dropped in a strange town with only whatever was in her backpack. She didn’t like it, and if she’d had her powers with her the tree across from her would be on fire now. Instead she settled for opening up the bag the strange woman had given her.
There were things to survive with at least. Most of it she’d never had to use before, her only experience with being alive, being in a small Japanese farming town over 400 years ago. But she did recognize some of the items. Hopefully surviving wouldn’t be too hard...

She paused as she picked up a strange device. It looked like you could text with it. ....Maybe she could reach her website and try to contact her companions. She was about to open it when she moved slightly, causing the branch to shake more then she’d like, and a red and white orb fell to the ground as she tried to get her balance.

She almost fell out of the tree but managed to hold onto her things and not fall off. With the bright light that flashed, it had been harder to do then it should have.
Looking down she froze as a strange creature stared up at her.

Maybe this was Hell.

Character
Name: Spencer Reid
Series: Criminal Minds
Timeline: Right after JJ’s wedding
Canon Resource Links: Here and here.

Personality: Spencer Reid is a genius. That is the first thing you'll ever know about him. He has an IQ of 187, an eidetic memory, and can read 20,000 words per minute. He loves learning, and can prove it with multiple BA's and several PhD's. Because of his amazing intelligence, he skipped several grades and graduated high school when he was twelve, and he was bullied viciously.

Most geniuses in fiction lord their intelligence over others and look down on those with average intelligence. Not Reid. He was beaten down very thoroughly growing up--while his mother loved and encouraged him, she was schizophrenic and unable to help him cope with the bullying. He never learned how to keep his mouth shut--he still loves spouting trivia and sharing his knowledge with others--but the bullies did make him start believing that he wasn't really worth much. That notion was cemented when his father abandoned him and his mother, and that caused a massive abandonment complex in his son.

Because of all this, Reid is uncommonly humble for someone so intelligent. He's very aware that he's usually the smartest person in the room, but it doesn't always seem important to him, and he's capable of accepting that other people can think of things that he doesn't. He's good at working in a group, and despite being very socially awkward, he's a pleasant person to be around. He's a very kind man who likes helping others, but he doesn't really like having the spotlight on him. He gets nervous when a lot of people pay attention to him.

Beyond his humbleness, though, Reid is very special because of how he can see the good in people. It takes him a while to love a person because he's afraid that they'll leave him, but once he does, he always sees the best of them. He knows that they have flaws and he's aware that they're there, but he doesn't really see them. He always sees the reason that he loves them, and he has the capability to see them at their best even when they're at their worst. When he loves, he loves with his whole heart, which makes it especially painful when he's betrayed somehow.

That's a major disadvantage Reid has. When he's hurt, he's hurt. He'll withdraw and deny and pretend that there's nothing wrong, but he trusts the people he loves (and honestly, those people are restricted to his mother and his teammates) wholly, and it causes real damage if one of them hurts him.

Because of his difficulty dealing with social situations, he often depends on his own mind to keep him company. 'It's lonely on the top' very much applies to Reid, because except with his teammates, people generally avoid interacting with him because his intellect is so intimidating and his habit of spouting tangentially related trivia can be off-putting. Because of his mother's schizophrenia, he's painfully aware that his mind may not be as reliable as other people assume it is, which leads to his biggest fear being that he inherited his mother's illness. His mind is the only thing which has remained true to him through all his hardship, and the concept that it could utterly fall apart is absolutely terrifying to him. That affects him because if something happens to cause him to doubt his own sanity, he will freak out. He's spent too long being afraid not to.

Possibly because of his abuse at the hands of peers his whole life, there are times when he exudes an aura of vulnerability that attracts abusers like flies. This becomes less frequent as he becomes more confident with himself, but there's a pattern of unsubs (the serial killers he tracks for a living) specifically targeting him when they could target anyone else on the team. This happens professionally, so it probably also happens personally. My headcanon is that he has a history of moderately abusive (and by that, I mean emotionally abusive, not physically or sexually) romantic relationships (which leads him to be wary of relationships, but that's a story for another time) that he always eventually cuts off, because despite the aura, he does have an aggressive side.

Reid is passive by nature, but if he feels it's worth it, he knows how to dig in his heels and say 'no'. An angry Reid is a very scary thing to behold, but he can and will get angry and confront people who he feels deserve it, such as teachers who told a boy to get over it when his father and peers ruthlessly abused and humiliated him, or at a man who sexually abused his daughter and then submitted her to electroshock therapy to shut her up. Even if he's kind and humble and passive, he's very brave and has a powerful sense of what is right and what is wrong. He will approach a man in the middle of a homicidal psychotic break and try talking him down, or lock himself in a house with anthrax when he knows he's already infected and won't allow his teammate to suffer the same fate, or even talk to the father who abandoned him nearly twenty years prior. He's strong enough to crush an addiction to Dilaudid all by himself and keep himself from relapsing for seven years. He's brave enough to continue hunting down serial killers after getting captured and tortured by one. He's resilient enough to be able to smile and see the good in people after working for a decade with serial killers. He's all these things, and that combines to make an amazing man.

Not that he'd ever realize it on his own, though.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

+ Probably the smartest man you’ll ever know.
+ Is very skilled in psycholinguistics
+ Is very skilled in geographical profiling
+ Is very skilled in profiling in general, leading to him knowing a lot about a person just from one conversation
+ Has PhD’s in chemistry, mathematics, and engineering
+ Has BA’s in psychology, sociology, and philosophy
+ Has an eidetic memory, meaning that he will remember everything he reads word for word and most things he hears
+ Has great aiming skills, especially when afraid (he’s gotten a headshot on at least two or three unsubs over the series’ run, generally with less than a moment to aim, which is something he developed over the show since he started out with god-awful gun skills)
+ Is very good at interviewing people (even a severely autistic child) and knows how to use his unthreatening appearance and demeanor to his advantage
+ He’s very empathetic, since his profiling prowess gives him insight into people and how they feel about things
+ He’s very brave; he’s far from fearless, but even when he’s scared, he can run right into danger to save someone or catch an unsub
+ Is very resilient and can bounce back from horrible situations

- Has only just started becoming more confident, and thus can be unsure of himself with anything that isn’t purely intellectually based
- Has a massive abandonment complex and that causes him to allow people get close to him very, very slowly
- Is very trusting of the people he loves, and if they betray that trust, he’s affected very deeply
- Is not particularly strong or fast, and is easily overpowered physically
- He exudes some kind of aura of vulnerability, leading to him frequently being the target of abusers and unsubs
- Doesn’t realize the good things about himself beyond his intellect
- Can get emotionally invested into someone he relates to, leading to him taking unnecessary risks
- Still has to struggle with Dilaudid at times—while he has never lapsed back, he has to struggle with cravings and the underlying desire to numb pain—and thus will not touch prescription painkillers with a ten-foot pole
- Struggles with a lot of trauma and night terrors from his life and job
- Is extremely—and I mean extremely—awkward socially and fumbles over himself when trying to converse with people, especially with strangers
- Is at a high risk for developing schizophrenia and very aware of it, so if something happens to make him doubt his sanity, he has a very violent response

First Person Sample: [It takes him a bit to figure out how the hell to start the feed. When he finally does, all PokéConnect is treated to the sight of a deceptively calm man dressed in purple pants and a white shirt tied with a gray obi, the traditional psychic’s outfit. An Absol keeps pacing behind him, as if expecting him to fall over at any moment and preparing itself to catch him. Honestly, that’s because it is, since its new Trainer has had a massive panic attack that caused him to pass out once already, and Absol can sense that there will be more to come. This is going to be a long partnership.]

Morgan, if this is a prank, alright. You got me. You win the war.

[The man holds up his hands in defeat, still unnaturally calm.]

I don’t know how you did it, but you can stop now. I get it. You can make the Pokémon go away. Once again, I have no idea how you did it…

[His throat gets tight. He struggles to keep his breathing even.

Please, Morgan. Please oh please make this stop.]

But you can stop it now. I have a lot of work to do, and giving me strange clothes, playing music everywhere, and trying to make me doubt my own sanity is not helping.

[Please let this be a prank. Please say he’s not completely insane.]

Third Person Sample: Reid yawned, settling down on the ground as the sun set. He had already set up his sleeping bag, but he always felt nervous about going to sleep out in the open. It felt like an invitation to get attacked.

As if sensing his Trainer’s anxiety (which he probably did), Absol padded to Reid, lying beside him and carefully placing his head on his Trainer’s lap, making sure that the blade sticking from his skull wouldn’t cut Reid. Reid absently started to stroke Absol’s head, mumbling softly.

“I bet you’re used to this, aren’t you?”

Absol only stared up at him patiently. Reid realized that talking to a Pokémon was basically on par with talking to an animal, but Absol always seemed to respond to what he said. When he got into a city, he’d check to see if there was a local library with any information on the relative intellect of different species.

“I’m not. I grew up in Las Vegas and live in DC. They’re both extremely densely populated, usually with a lot of tourists. I don’t think I’ve ever really slept somewhere without knowing that there was someone nearby.” It was a little lonely, to be honest.

Absol grunted softly. Reid gave him a shaky smile. Well, even if he couldn’t talk, it felt like Absol was smart enough to count as a ‘someone’.

“Wake me up if you hear anything, okay?” It was totally redundant to say since his Pokémon would make an absolute racket if there was a sign of danger, but it made him feel better anyway. Absol grunted again in agreement.

Reid unclipped his balls from his belt, then started releasing his Pokémon for the night. He preferred to leave them out of their balls in general since he knew that he wouldn’t like to be stuck inside a tiny ball all the time, so without fail, he let them out overnight to do what they wanted while he slept. They all seemed too… human to treat like animals, so he tried to treat them like semi-independent human beings that he happened to be responsible for. Really, despite the fact he had a panic attack when he first saw them, Pokémon were perfect for him—human enough to understand what he says, but animal enough to not care about his awkwardness and not make him feel self-conscious.

His Pokémon always repaid his consideration, and whether he realized it or not, they loved him for his kindness. As he gently pushed Absol off of him and curled up in his sleeping bag, each and every one of his creatures settled down for the night, keeping a watchful eye out for their master.

Character
Name: Minato Arisato (Female Protagonist)
Series: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3
Timeline: Post-Game
Canon Resource Links: Game Wiki and Character Wiki

Personality: The female protagonist is also "silent" and her personality is also shaped by the player. However, her design and dialogue choices point her towards being mostly the direct opposite of the male protagonist. Thus, this will be used as a base for her personality, with a bit of headcanon via my playthrough.

As opposed to her male counterpart, Minato is more talkative and responsive in conversations, though she’s just as much as a good listener. She’s cheery and optimistic; as one of her frequent given options is "I’ll be fine!" However, her degree of optimism is to the point of her being so carefree, that she sometimes becomes oblivious to certain situations. This makes her a bit of a foil to her best friend, the headstrong and slightly snarky Yukari Takeba. Minato’s cheeriness, couple with a bit of an overactive imagination, causes her to come off as eccentric at times. She sometimes focuses on the less important aspects of statements, such as Junpei asking her if she was okay because she looked like a zombie. Her response was "Oh, really? A zombie?", much to Junpei’s frustration. At another time, she suggests that the group go to a summer festival despite not knowing that there was actually a festival going on the next day. Not only that, she interprets metaphors in a very literal sense. ("There's a poisonous flower among you." "But I don't have a garden...")

She is highly energetic and not as sleepy or tired as her male counterpart. However, her fixation on food is just as huge, if not larger. In Junpei’s Social Link, he once exclaims, "How the hell can so much be eaten by such a tiny body!?" She always has an option to order extra at eateries when she’s with friends, and is willing to eat mostly anything that her companions don’t want. She has a fondness and high tolerance of spicy food, once requesting Akihiko to take her to a restaurant featuring such foods, and even eating Ken’s bell peppers for him. She also puts hot sauce in her coffee. On of her hobbies is listening to music, evident by her always carrying her red headphones and MP3 player around. She seems to value having them a lot, as she brings them even during the Dark Hour, when electronics don’t function.

Despite her carefree personality, she takes her role as the leader of SEES quite seriously. Though excitable to the point of interjecting energy-filled and silly phrases, Minato maintains a calm mind during their missions. She proves to be a surprisingly efficient tactician, and, along with her determination, this makes her a very effective leader. For the most part, she maintains always maintains a smile, even when angry. This somehow makes her scarier, and even Yukari is afraid of her when she's in such a state. (Junpei from the Drama CD: "She may be smiling, but her eyes aren't...")

Minato is highly sociable and can be a great friend. She enjoys meeting new people and talking with them. She’ll always help out when needed, and refuses to abandon anyone she thinks is in need. Ever a diligent hard worker, she does her very best in all the tasks given to her. This aspect makes it even more surprising when she seems to do quite well with schoolwork, though it might have something to do with the promise of "nice things" if she aces school exams. She is also shown to be quick in adapting to new environments and situations, but this should be expected as she’s constant moving from place to place as a foster child.

Despite her bright quirkiness, Minato also has a darker aspect of her personality. Though she enjoys helping others and listening to their problems, her selfless personality causes to try and avoid talking about her own problems. Even when faced with something tragic, she tries to not worry those close to her by maintaining her smile and forcing herself to be positive, though she'll be less social than she usually is. Since her family died in front of her eyes at a very young age, she has a fear of being alone, which is only made worse by her constant transferring of school and foster families. It is also due to her being extremely attached to her friends that even if she rarely expresses anger outwardly, if someone harms or insults any of her friends, she will not hesitate to lash out them or even resort to violence. For example, when her friend Saori was slapped by a girl, she would have punched the girl in the face if Saori did not stop her. In the Drama CD, when Tomochika comments that Rio wearing a Yukata would look wrong, Minato ends up having nothing but harsh words for him. ("Your words are the only thing that's 'wrong' here!"/"Why don't you just abandon him right now, Rio?")

After the events revolving around SEES took a more grim route, she has become more calm and mature than she was when she first joined the team. Despite this, she's still prone to making silly comments and her gargantuan appetite hasn't changed a bit.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Adaptability
+ Tactician
+ Leadership
+ Determination
+ Loyal
+ Kind

- Fear of being alone
- Gluttonous
- Can be very airheaded
- Prefers to solve her own problems
- Loses her cool when friends are insulted/hurt

Goooooooood morning, fellow trainers! I have a burning question for everyone today!

[Minato chipperly waves at the camera with an apple in her hand, then tilts her head in deep thought.]

So, I get that even if the berries on the trees look uberly delicious, people can't eat them. I, well... I pretty much learned that the hard way! Whoopsie-daisy!

Anyway, thanks to that, a thought occurred to me while I went to buy fruit and other ingredients at the PokeMart.

[Suddenly, her cheerful face switches to an exaggerated distressed expression.]

Where does all the food come from? What if they're not actually what we think they are? What if they actually contain microbes that will effectively turn us into Pokemon? Maybe that's why I never see a shortage of them!

[After a short pause, Minato idly takes a bite of the apple.]

... Still delicious, though. Gives a whole new meaning to food for your thoughts, doesn't it?

Third Person Sample:
"All right, finish off with a Tackle!"

As soon as Minato calls out her command, her Duskull knocks out the wild Rattata with heavy force. Score, another victory! Minato scoops the Duskull into her arms and showers him with both hugs and praises for a job well done. It was good timing too, the Pokegear's clock showed that it was almost noon, so why not celebrate the victory with a nice lunch? Some may argue that Minato always tried to make any event a time for eating, but she never let that dissuade her.

Once out of the grass, she sets her bag down and pulls out a checkered blanket, and spreads it out on the ground. The Duskull didn't waste a moment in taking his desired spot on the blanket. Anyway, it's time to prepare lunch. Minato made sure to cook some rice before she left town, so today will be riceballs with pickled plums! Tasty and convenient!

After a few minutes, she has several finished riceballs sitting atop a hankerchief, but Minato was far from done. About twenty would satisfy her, after all. However, her work was interrupted when a Pidgey swoops down from above and snatches the riceballs, using the corners of the hankerchief to make it into a sort of pouch to carry the entirety of the meal as the Pidgey fled back into the sky.

Such an event would only be found as a comedic moment in anime, but Minato didn't let that distract her. Despite the vapid smile on her face, in only a mere matter of seconds Minato takes a ceramic plate from her bag and flings it at the offending Pidgey with surprising ferocity.

It was super effective. The hankerchief pouch of riceballs landed safely in Minato's hands, perfectly intact. And everyone except the Pidgey ate lunch that day.

Character
Name: Sayori Wakaba (often called Yori)
Series: Vampire Knight
Timeline: Chapter 70
Canon Resource Links: Here.

Personality:
Sayori is a minor character in the Vampire Knight series, however this doesn't mean she doesn't have a basic outlined personality set for her. No, she has a rather strong one, sometimes better written out than the main character of the manga. Sayori is overall a caring, kind, modest, discrete, a rather worrisome person and just your typical teenage girl not truly interested in people who's lives are too showy or not worth her attention. For example the night class. While everyone is drooling and madly in love with the vampire class at Cross academy, Sayori generally ignores them. However she does admit to being a tad bit afraid of them and that she would date someone from the day class if it weren't for the fact that she were engaged to someone she hasn't met yet. Of course this fact doesn't bother her, she has better things to worry about.

Sayori is shown to care deeply about Yuki Cross/Kuran and worries about her often. She worried about the fact that she didn't get enough sleep, that she didn't stay awake in class, and that she didn't do too well in school. However those worries were gone and replaced with the worry of her friend being a vampire and her hoping Yuki handles that fact well and can manage on her own. Sure she cares about other people, like Zero and classmates, but Yuki will always be loved and cared for more than others simply because they were roommates, and have known each other for a long time. Now this leads to her being very observant of course! Since she worries a lot about Yuki, she notices things that others refuse to or don't.

Sayori did not know that the night class was actually the vampire class until Aido protected her from vampires. Since then she has been shown to not fear vampires even when they lust for blood (as shown in a vampire ball held after a year Yuki became a vampire), she simply acts like nothing is going on and is very good at is. However of course she can be very deadpanned at times especially with vampires and can seem to not care because of this.

Sayori is discrete, and modest in the way that she dresses. She wears her school uniform often, keeps her hair short and kept, her nails clean, and doesn't lavish too much in girly things like dresses or such only when needed. However because she comes from a distinguished family, she does sometimes wear certain things with pride like a dress at the vampire ball.

Sayori can also be a determined person who seeks what she wants to know and won't stop until she gets answers. Before meeting up with Yuki after a year of not seeing her, Sayori would often speak to Zero and question him on his thought and beliefs of vampires and demanded to know whether he would kill Yuki or not. However later on, once she saw things be peaceful between Zero and Yuki, she stopped worrying as much and only worries now about losing her friendship with her friend.

( Sayori scrunched her nose slightly and sighed mentally. She wasn't the type to show too much of her emotions but suddenly she felt confused and dazed. So she would indulge in the right to ask and seem worried. )

Excuse me but where am I? I feel like I'm in a dream. I think...I think someone I knew played a game that looked like this but...

( She places a finger to her chin and ponders. )

I just can't put a finger to it.

( Sayori of course realizes the pun but chooses to ignore it. After all this was serious. She wouldn't be able to see her friend Yuki anymore or even Zero. sure Zero and her weren't too close but she still cared for him because of Yuki. )

Does anyone know...does anyone know a Yuki Kuran?

Third Person Sample:
Sayori sat under a large tree in Johto. She looked up at the sky in a rather dim manner with the Vulpix on her lap. She would never admit it but she grew to like the pokemon the moment she was paired up with it. The creature reminded her of her friend Yuki back when she was human. So cute, needy, and fragile. Sayori stroked its head gently with her right hand and sighed. She didn't mind the moment of peace nor did she mind the warm creature on her, just that she was worried. Worried about eating, she wasn't a vampire that could survive off of blood, worried about Yuki, worried about her father, worried about school, and worried about what was going to happen.

However a tiny mantra entered her head, 'You can't control what will happen'. She knew this was true and it played in her mind many times. She had a fiancee back home who she didn't even know, she had her life set out for her, and now that she had escaped it, she was tossed into a situation she knew she couldn't control. She couldn't control winning battles, catching other creatures, getting money, or even finding new friends. Not that she was looking for any! But still she wanted to be back home in the comfort of her home.

A dead panned face was all that was seen that day. As much as Yori thought or even considered she didn't let it show. That was the way she was, sometimes she thought how it would be like to be her friend Yuki, showing everything so clearly and easily. Maybe she could pull it off....but then she would have to pick up the role of victim her friend did. Sigh, sigh.

Name: Bakura Ryou
Series: Yuugiou (original series, manga)
Timeline: Battle City, just after Yami Malik vs Yami Bakura

Canon Resource Links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yu_gi_oh & http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Ryo_Bakura Buuut most of the information on the YGO wiki is just... off. And full of fanon. Painfully so. http://kokorononaka.net/Image/Bakura/BakuraYBakura.html & http://www.kokorononaka.net/FAQ/BakuRant1.html though I wrote both of those pages.

Personality:

The world of Yuugiou is one based on two central concepts: friendship and games. Bakura is someone who loves both things. His intro chapter is even titled “The pretty boy who loves games,” and the first hopeful conversation he has with the rest of the cast is about the game of Monster World, his favorite. Monster World is a TRPG, a table top role-playing game, and a game that has been turned against him by the spirit of the Sennen Ring. While Bakura wants nothing more than to play his favorite game with his friends, every time he has before, his friends fell into comas due to the Ring Spirit's twisted interpretation of Bakura's wish to play games with his friends forever. His desperation and resolve to keep from losing yet more friends pushes him to fight against the Ring spirit and leads to his martyrdom, showing that there is nothing more important to Bakura in the world that his friends, not even his own life.

Though looking at his life, it's really no surprise that he would go that far. His younger sister died as result of a car accident, and though the letter he writes to her asking how their mother is doing, it's apparent that his mother also died. His father, though he owns Domino museum and thus works near by where Bakura now lives, lives apart from him. Bakura has been alone and isolated, first by death and then by the Ring for a long time, something that shows through his cheerful nature when he speaks of living apart from his family. As much as he wants to reach out and make friends with Yuugi and everyone when he first meets them, he pushes them away to protect them. The uneasy balance of desperation and self sacrifice leaves him seeming almost bipolar at first, going from chatty cheerfulness to depressed quiet. Once the Ring is beaten, the depression seems to vanish, leaving bright cheerful inquisitiveness, balanced with thoughtful pondering and deep worry when things start to look as if they won't go well.

Bakura's cheerful nature for the most part seems to be a mask of who he wants to be. There is a deep insecurity that lurks under it and the need to hide away things that would draw attention to anything wrong. When the Ring starts speaking to him again, even when he's asked if something's wrong, he pushes away the concern, saying it's nothing. He makes a deal with the Ring to save his friends from the trap they've fallen into, putting it back on, even after dying to stop it, then very swiftly seems to forget about it. He always is clueless when he returns to himself after the Ring has taken him over, yet just rolls with it as if nothing had happened. Whether this is by design of the Ring or his own coping mechanisms, or a combination of both is never explored, but it's very clear that he doesn't recall the danger of the Ring, even going as far to wonder aloud why Yuugi would hide it from him.

Escapism is another strong part of who Bakura is, to the point where it interferes with his daily life. When going to join Anzu and the group to watch what's going on in Battle City, he's late to join them because he stayed up finishing an RPG scenario. His character in Monster World is high level, 2 levels under the Dark Lord and is a White Mage, a background character, but one that is supportive and the unsung hero, the one who heals and protects the party while they defeat the Dark Lord. Yet he's also the GM, the one running the scenario and puppeteer the dark forces of the game. When he plays with his friends, he's the one who runs the game, so even when he's playing with them, he's apart from them. In the storyline he fills a similar role, part of the group, but a spectator, giving cometary on the action more than participating in it and when he vanishes, due to the Ring Spirit, Anzu's comment on it is that he's gone “again” implying that he often wanders off.

Despite being friends with the main group, Bakura only appears to really be close to Yuugi. Jounouchi routinely yells at him for worrying or saying the wrong thing, even when it's in defense of his friend, and seems genuinely disturbed at Bakura for having an occult deck. Anzu, despite noticing when Bakura seems off, lets things go when he says “nothing's wrong” even when his face betrays that there is something deeply wrong. She also makes no attempt to go after him when he's wandered off in Battle City, instead running off after Jounouchi. He winds up spending time with Honda on side quests since Honda is similarly left to the side. At the end of the game of Ancient Egypt, when Bakura is unconscious at the other side of the game table, the rest of the group just sits and watches him suspiciously. It's not until the other Yuugi returns that anyone checks on him.

Part of why Bakura so often seems left to the side may have part to do with the fact that he's just a little bit not right, even when the cast is unaware he's wearing the Ring. Having white hair at such a young age stands out even in a world where hair in three colours or a giant spike seems normal. Bakura has an odd personality in his like of the occult, especially with how cheerful he is explaining his deck, which is full of traps, ghouls and nasty tactics fitting a GM. That he shares this deck with the Ring Spirit and that there are many times it's hard to tell which of them is in control also adds a layer of not rightness to his personality, as does the writing to his dead sister and fascination with the Sennen Items. He even asks to keep the replica of the Millennium Eye from Duelist Kingdom, which the Ring Spirit later replaces with the real thing.

Bakura is also the only character in the manga to have come back from the dead. When Yami Yuugi rushes over to him at the end of Monster World, he announces that Bakura is indeed dead, meaning that his spirit had departed when he self destructed the dice holding his soul. It's only because part of his spirit is in his game piece (that sacrifices himself to revive his “master”) that he is able to come back from the dead.

Over all, Bakura is very polite with a playful side. He enjoys playing tricks and harmless pranks whether it be trying to mess with the mime in the park by startling him to helping Mai convince Jounouchi that she hadn't been released from the Penalty Game that had left her comatose.

Strengths/Weaknesses: Bakura is skilled with strategy games, building/painting/customizing miniatures and TRPG sets and cooking. Conversely, Bakura is very unsure of himself, naïve, and easily lost in fantasy. He's not a fighter by any means and can't handle pain very well. He fears being alone and losing friends. While he doesn't ever stand up for himself, when his friends are in danger, he will go to any lengths to do what he has to for their sake, making his friends and friendships his greatest strength. Without the backing of his friends, or even worse, when directly confronted by a friend, he has no backbone and all and caves very quickly to pressure.

[[There's a very cheerful face on the screen]] Aaaa, like an MMO! [[he exclaims happily]] That's even better than-- [[he pauses, blinking]] aa--- it's on, isn't it?

[[He rubs the back of his neck with a small laugh]] Hello, everyone! I'm Bakura Ryou, a new player! --Aa-- newly arrived, I mean! [[looking even more embarrassed now]] I've never been in this sort of place before, so please be patient with me and I hope I'll be able to make friends with you all!

[[He waves with a big smile before, looking back at the buttons]] Let me see, maybe...

[[and the feed cuts]]

Third Person Sample:

>Wake up_

Bakura was no stranger to “waking up” in a different place than he was the last time he blinked, but this was the first time he'd found him self in a place utterly unfamiliar. After passing out again, he was sure he'd have wound up back in the hospital or at least something like it... but this place clearly wasn't that!

He paused, blinking once before turning to look at his left arm and the clean bandage before carefully, poking at the it. It was odd how it didn't hurt at all, especially with how bad it had been before.... Not even that numb feeling that painkillers often left behind. It was almost as if...

But there was no way that was possible, no matter how good the hospital was.

Maybe a lot of time had passed? A quick check of his watch discarded that theory; it was only a few hours after he had been following Jounouchi and everyone around. Not enough time for something like that to heal up. And not enough time to be transported to someplace so very different.

>Look room_

Curiosity growing, he stood up, taking in his soundings a bit more fully. There was something-- familiar with this set up. Generic room, generic lighting... Ah! A backpack... Starting inventory?

Aaa, stop it, Bakura Ryou, just because it looks like the opening to an RPG doesn't mean it is one, no matter how amazing that would be!

>Open backpack_

Aha! This was definitely starting inventory! Though far more practical than most adventures started out with, though most of the time you didn't worry about hygiene in games... Maybe more hiking inventory, or like the bag Mai had brought to Duelist Kingdom.

Either way, it was pretty clear he wasn't in Domino anymore. He couldn't contain his grin at that. While it was disappointing that he wouldn't get to see Yuugi win the tournament (since it wasn't as if there was anyone else who had a chance!) something like this...

He really hoped he wasn't asleep and dreaming. The thought that he'd woken up the hero character of a RPG... aaa-- it was more than he could have hoped for!

“All right! Let's go!” he cheered, hefting the bag with a huge grin.

This was going to be so cool.

Character
Name: Mio Amakura
Series: Fatal Frame
Timeline: Post-second game.
Canon Resource Links: http://www.cameraslens.com/fatalframewiki/index.php5?title=Mio_Amakura

Personality: Mio puts her sister above everything else; including herself. The guilt associated with the day she let Mayu fall from the mountain path has instilled a strong sense of duty when it comes to family, and a bit of a selfless streak. Anything or anyone weaker then her she has an instant soft spot for and wants to take care of and help. This isn’t limited to people, as she’s shown to geniuenly care and want to help Itsuki too, despite the fact he’s a ghost (and keeps calling her ‘Yae’).

She’s the kind of person who pushes through no matter what, even in the most terrifying of situations. Despite her fear and exhaustion of being trapped in the Lost Village, she put on a brave face and kept going, not letting any of it get to her. She had to get out, she had to save Mayu, and dammit she’d do just that if it killed her. Mio’s shown to be able to pick up things quickly, learning about the camera and its abilities, and about the village itself with a surprising ease; she’s the type to adapt quickly and explore everywhere. Anywhere could be a potential way out.

Due to her dealings in the Lost Village and the horrors she’s had to face (and commit), nothing much scares her anymore if she’s directly confronting it. However she is still easily startled and might instantly drop back into survival mode, usually by instantly snapping a picture with her camera or ducking to hide somewhere. She has a tendency when startled to bring her hands up in front of her face, as if to ward a blow, but really it’s to automatically bring up her camera, even if she doens’t have it on her at the moment.

Mio is opposite the shy and timid Mayu in that she’s much more outgoing. She’s not afraid to approach people and demand answers, and will firmly hold her ground against something she believes in, showing a stubborn attitude. Lately, though, the guilt of killing her sister is weighing heavily on her. She’s quieter, a bit sullen and wary or people. Though still stubborn and not afraid to ask questions, it takes longer for her to warm up to people, and even longer to open up to them.

An interesting note is that despite her overwhelming love for her sister, it's canon that the only way the ritual can work is for the 'older' twin (that would be Mio in the village's terms) to have some grudge or secret loathing for their twin. For Mio it was a secret hate for having to take care of Mayu all the time and having her depend on Mio. She will never admit this willingly, however.

She is also oblivious too--or at least refuses to outright acknowledge, her twin sister’s destructive obsession for her. Mayu can be heard saying things like “Mio is always thinking about me... So she will do whatever I say” in at least one part of the game, and is desperate to keep her sister from leaving her. It’s due to that that Mio’s views on love have been skewed in the direction of “if I love them I must make sure they never leave me.”

Strengths/Weaknesses: Strength wise, Mio is highly inquisitive and usually won't rest until a mystery is solved. When faced with tough decisions she's not afraid to push on ahead, no matter how difficult, and do what needs to be done. She’s also fiercely loyal to those she considers her friends and will always do her best to help them.

Weaknesses is that she tends to be blind to the faults of those who gain her loyalty and, because of her experiences, has become very traumatized. She’s quicker to anger, prone to frequent bouts of and depression, and very reluctant to be drawn out of the shell she’s been put in. She also suffers from night terrors that leave her unwilling to sleep. Her own perceptions of friend or love are rather skewed, as she’s never made lasting friendships outside of her own sister, leaving her rather sheltered and oblivious to what might be obvious signs of friendship/affection from other people. She is stubborn and will dig her feet in and stand her ground--which can be both a strength, and a weakness.

On a more physical level, the bruising on her throat constantly hurts her, some days more than others, and can be a hindrance to her.

First Person Sample: [Mio looks a little reluctant, anxious as she grips the dex]

Does anyone else have a-- [She pauses struggling to remember the name of the creature--the pokemon--she’d been stuck with. Aside from the name she’d given it herself, of course.] Sableye? I think that’s it.

Anyway... I haven’t been able to get it to eat anything. It just keeps digging holes and trying to shove dirt in its mouth. [There’s a shuffling noise behind her and Mio turns, making an aggravated noise] Like that-- Yami, stop!

[The Sableye looks up, pausing momentarily before shoving a few fistfuls of rocks in its mouth]

That’s not good for it, right!? Ugh-- [Mio makes a frustrated noise and presses a hand to her face, looking like her nerves are fraying.] I want to go home.

Third Person Sample: It had been a long day, Mio decided. As she watched the sun start to sink below the horizon she felt a familiar twinge of anxiety, an irrational fear that one day the sun wouldn’t come back up and she’d be lost in darkness once more. She forcefully turned her back in, trying to force it out of her mind as she returned to her camp.

The forest made her stomach twist again, this time with a fear she couldn’t put away so easily. The trees loomed, the trill of unfamiliar night animals just getting started on their day, and all of it made her uneasy. Briefly her mind went to the forests surrounding the village, dark and imposing and guiding her and Mayu further in until it had been far too late to go back. Did any of these forests have curses like that? She thought not--surely she would have heard about it by now--but it didn’t stop her fear. It was acute enough of her to stop her traveling as soon as the sun started to set and set up camp, retreating into her tent before she could get a good look at the moon and stars.

And there she sat in a silent vigil, knees pulled up to her chest and her eyes staring a hole into the side of the tent.

Mio felt awfully lonely.

It felt like there had been such a huge chunk of herself missing and as she crawled into the sleeping bag (not that she would do much sleeping, she thought. It wasn’t worth it) she felt..empty. She’d gotten so used to sleeping next to her sister, even after a few days the loss was still felt.

There was a soft noise and a sudden weight against her back. Mio stiffened, a cry stuck in her throat as she turned to see Yami had nestled up to her. She had half a mind to push him away, but after a moment's thought decided to bear it out. The slight warmth was calming and Mio had to admit she was growing fond of the pokemon, even if its looks had terrified her in the beginning. it didn't replace her sister--not by a long shot--but it was enough to help her feel a little safer, a little more protected. After all, the thing had proven to be rather loyal to her, fighting for her and protecting her as they went. She didn't have much cause to believe he'd suddenly turn traitor now.

With that in mind, Mio settled down, not quite ready to sleep, but content for the time being.

Character
Name: Tokiomi Tohsaka
Series: Fate/Zero
Timeline: Mid-Act 12 - after his conversation with Rin, before the meeting in the church.
Canon Resource Links: Type-Moon wiki

Personality:
The Tohsaka family line is an old one, steeped in tradition, dignity and a history that commands respect; to be born into this bloodline carries with it the demands of not only becoming a successful magus and realizing the family's goal of reaching Akasha, or the "root" of all knowledge, but also to serve as the secret guardian of Fuyuki City, the location of the Holy Grail Wars.

Tokiomi Tohsaka is, at least at first glance, everything the head of such a family line should be; though he's soft-spoken and rarely harsh in tone or mannerisms, any gentleness behind his words is tempered by a firm sense of authority - the sort of confidence that comes after one has come to know the world and their place in it, and that place happens to be one of great responsibility. He's a powerful magus, aligned with the fire attribute and specializing in jewel magecraft, which is pretty much exactly what it says on the tin - if you see him breaking out some pretty, shiny things during battle, you can pretty much be assured that this fight is about to start sucking for you, as chances are he's either enchanted those things to do something nasty, or he's about to unleash the power he's stored inside of them.

Basically, his power is now rubies. And his rubies are now a flamethrower.

That isn't to say, however, that his lineage ensured that Tokiomi had everything handed to him from birth; when compared to the previous generations within the Tohsaka family, his natural talents are mediocre at best, and in order to live up to expectations and not make an utter disgrace of himself and his family name, he would need to do double the training to attain half the result that would be required. As the only son in his generation, Tokiomi didn't back down from the challenge that was presented to him; rather, he turned his focus inward, striving to live up to the Tohsaka family creed - one which demands that the bearer should always act with composure and elegance. He's deeply internalized these words, simple though they are, and integrates them into everything he does; he repeats them to himself often in times of stress or turmoil, as a reminder to keep calm and think things through rationally before acting on impulse, and it's implied that this sort of practice is also how he learned to manage his mana flows and perfect his craft, keeping him from endangering himself or others accidentally by overloading or overusing the jewels he's working with. Also in keeping with the general themes of composure and elegance, Tokiomi acts with all the grace of a gentleman; he dresses well, he has incredibly refined taste, and his behavior is marked with charm and poise - while he doesn't hide his self-confidence, he's kind and polite, even toward those he doesn't know or who are of a lower station than he is, and he's found a balance that refrains from being too standoffish or too overfamiliar.

From an outsider's perspective, then, Tokiomi is a perfect gentleman. For those who know him, however...well. It isn't to say that there's a massive illusion that falls apart or anything there, but it becomes obvious fairly quickly that he hasn't quite worked out how to do this whole "genuine caring" thing. It's not that he treats the people he's close to badly - no, he treats them like everyone else. And therein lies the issue, really: he treats members of his family (his wife, his daughters) with the same distant politeness and cool rationality that he would a stranger on the street. This sort of behavior doesn't come from a lack of empathy or caring, as he's shown to care for the well-being of his family, friends, and even the servants in his household on several occasions; rather, his primary problem seems to be that his understanding of social cues and how interpersonal relationships work in general is very, very poor, and underneath all the superficial charm and grace, emotionally speaking Tokiomi is incredibly immature.

One of the places this immaturity is most obvious is when he's engaging other magi in battle, where it surfaces immediately and he goes from being an elegant gentleman to an openly arrogant asshole in the span of about point-five seconds - he's powerful and he knows it, and he isn't afraid to flaunt his power, either, often taunting his opponent, throwing out personal insults, implying that their intelligence may or may not be seriously deficient, and generally trying to goad them into attacking him blindly so he can tire them out and then set their faces on fire (which, while a dick move, is weirdly acceptable in magi society, as their battles are often to the death). However, while the taunting and gloating and generally behaving like a nine-year-old with a flamethrower is a bit jarring, it's arguable that the most damage is done toward those he's not trying to harm.

While it isn't nearly as obvious on first glance, his generally immature tendencies show up in his positive relationships most of all. He tends to handle serious interpersonal issues by refusing to handle them entirely, instead ignoring them and seeming to hope that they'll go away eventually; for the things that won't simply go away, he finds ways to rationalize and justify everything that's happening so he can continue to ignore his problems in peace. This is problematic on its own, when Tokiomi is just dealing with things that affect him, but he also seems to expect others to handle things in the exact same way; he seems a bit cold as a result, in that he often makes decisions that end up hurting his family and he doesn't seem to care, but in reality he doesn't understand that he's continually hurting them to begin with - he expects them to rationalize the issue and then and put it aside for good, and that will quite simply be that.

When it comes to positive emotion, Tokiomi is a little more open with his feelings around people he likes or cares about; even that, however, is done in a strange, incredibly stunted sort of way. He'll often tell people that he's experiencing a given emotion without acting any differently to show them; for example, he tells his magecraft student that he's very excited and wants to share his joy with everyone...while very calmly sipping wine, with pretty much no change in expression. He considers telling people how he feels to be enough, and has serious difficulty expressing himself physically; he also doesn't touch people unless he absolutely has to, often standing with his hands behind his back when he's near them and standing a fair distance away from them otherwise. If he has to hand something to another person, he'll ask them to reach out so he can drop it into their hands - or if that isn't possible due to the nature of whatever he's giving them, he'll intentionally set the object on a table or other surface so that the other person has to pick it up. This sort of emotional/physical disconnect can be confusing at best, and negatively affecting those he cares about at worst - the one time he reaches out in canon to pet his daughter's hair, she flinches away from him at first, unsure of what he's trying to do. He quickly realizes that it's because he's never done anything like that before; he's never come in contact with her at all unless he couldn't avoid doing so, much less done anything affectionate like that.

Admittedly, it isn't just the physical side of positive relationships that tends to give him problems, as he seems to have difficulty figuring out where emotional boundaries should be. This often results in Tokiomi taking an incredibly naive view of his relationships with others; he seems to consider all of his non-antagonistic relationships as being friendships, skipping over the "acquaintance" stage altogether, and he assumes that all "friendships" he has are completely mutual. He trusts everyone that he decides he likes, and once he trusts someone, he trusts them unconditionally - he believes that individuals he trusts would never betray him or lie to him, and he seems to think that ulterior motives in people simply don't exist, often contenting himself with a superficial explanation for others' behavior and leaving it at that. It's a bit difficult to tell whether this is blatant misinterpretation of people's actions, or the abovementioned unwillingness to accept that there might be a problem showing up again; it's entirely possible that it's a bit of both.

While he tends to think that he understands people far better than he actually does, in some ways Tokiomi does seem aware that he has problems that prevent him from interacting with others in ways that he should be able to, and he tries to find solutions for it when he can; for example, in selecting his wife, he intentionally sought out a woman who valued loyalty before love, which would be ideal for both of them - given his tendencies toward unshakable faith in those he cares about, they would both be satisfied with the knowledge that they could trust each other, and his general inability to express his feelings very well would be both understood and accepted. If he's flat-out told by someone he's close to (and willing to listen to) that he just said or did something horrendous, insensitive, or horrendously insensitive, he'll apologize immediately and attempt to amend the situation to the best of his ability - unfortunately, the fact that he doesn't pick up on social cues very well kind of hinders that last point to all hell, as he needs to be flat-out told.

A major part of the issue is that he simply doesn't pick up on subtle nuances in tone or facial expression very well; he understands being facetious, and he can also pick up on most sarcasm and he can tell when people are being derisive toward him (though he usually doesn't dignify it with a response), but he also often believes that others are being straightforward or honest even when they aren't, and he has a hard time following indirect statements and connecting points of conversation that aren't entirely linear. As such, Tokiomi is incredibly prone to communication problems, and unless the person he's talking to is being completely blunt, Tokiomi will often miss the point of what's being said, or require a question to be rephrased a few times before he understands what's being asked; he'll try to take a guess if he really has no idea what's going on, but he's a little hit-or-miss on it - sometimes he'll manage to answer properly, other times he gets hung up on or confused by a smaller detail in dialogue and focus on that instead, derailing the conversation for a moment while he gets his bearings.

However, regardless of what he believes when it comes to the straightforwardness of others, Tokiomi doesn't exactly wear his heart on his sleeve himself - this became incredibly apparent over the course of the Fourth Holy Grail War, where he basically spent the entire time trying to manipulate people into doing what he wanted in an attempt to ensure a victory by any means possible. This wasn't entirely through selfishness - the Holy Grail War is between magi, and magi certainly do like their battles to the death; a loss would likely mean that Tokiomi would be seriously injured or killed - but at the same time, a good amount of arrogance and personal pride went into it as well. Again, Tokiomi is very immature, and his ego and self-confidence are pretty much unrivaled once he's given a chance to show off his skills; a good amount of his unshakable faith is in himself as well as others, for a reason that comes down to "I'm awesome and I know it." When the hubris kicks in, there's not really much stopping it until something forcibly smacks him down again, and he gets into a general mindset of overestimating his abilities entirely. So while usually Tokiomi is at least fairly straightforward in his interactions with others, he'll try keeping secrets from them and manipulating them if he's feeling confident enough and it benefits him to do so; his success rate for this is...pretty terrible, however, as over the course of the Holy Grail War, he was intelligent enough to come up with some fairly good gambits, but ultimately he was severely hindered by most of the points above regarding his lack of ability to understand the behavior of others.

At the same time, the fact that he tries excelling in an area that he knows he has problems in isn't anything that should come as some sort of surprise; after all, he's been doing it since he was young. He's incredibly determined and driven toward success, especially when he's told that he can't do something; he isn't one to shy away in the face of adversity, even when things begin looking truly hopeless. In the end, it all comes down to the words he's placed his wholehearted trust and faith in; he believes in those words more strongly than he does any other person, including himself.

Always act with composure and elegance.

Should one adhere to that creed in all things, one way or another, victory will be ensured.

[personal profile] pretentions 2012-09-16 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Strengths/Weaknesses:
✔ Despite his general social problems, Tokiomi has a lot of superficial charm; as such, simple, casual social interactions with him tend to be rather pleasant. His presence tends to be calming, and he tends to behave with all the elegance and grace of a gentleman. He treats other people well unless they give him a reason to dislike them, regardless of their station; even if he doesn't like them or the other person is in a state of disgrace, he'll still address them like a human being, though he'll be a bit colder toward them overall.

✔ He is incredibly determined and driven to succeed; he went from being a kid with natural magical talent that was generally subpar to the second most dangerous person in the Fourth Holy Grail War through training, studying and sheer force of will alone. Basically, if he gets it into his head to do something, he will stop at nothing to ensure that it will be done.

✔ Along with the abovementioned determination comes a sense of responsibility - he's a guardian of Fuyuki City and he's willing to do what he can to defend his area properly, rather than cover up collateral damage after something has arisen; he's a Reasonable Authority Figure to his daughter, and one of the first things he tells her regarding the dangers of overflooding things with mana is that it risks not only oneself, but others. He also sent not only his family but also his servants away from the city before the Holy Grail War, not wanting them to get caught up in the crossfire; even though he doesn't express it in ways that are considered normal, he actually does have a reasonably strong sense of empathy.

✔ A lot of his energy is driven toward positivity, rather than negativity. He's incredibly optimistic, often seeking out the brighter side of situations regardless of how dark they appear to be at first; though he isn't a doormat, he's willing to go out of his way to keep peace between others and himself, and he prefers to form as many positive relationships as possible as opposed to antagonizing people to try to force an upper hand.

✔ He's very competitive and won't back down from a challenge; however, his acceptance of such challenges are done with the same amount of grace with which he handles his social interactions. He sees no honor in attacking someone weaker than he is, and he doesn't get overzealous in fights; if he's forced into taking on a far weaker opponent, he'll often try to end the fight quickly, without humiliating them. However, there is a mild exception to this, in the form of those who have already disgraced themselves, though even that isn't a definite; an example of what's meant by this, as canon goes, would be his battle against Kariya Matou. Kariya had previously turned his back on magus society, deeming it full of bullshit and pain and deciding he wanted no part of it; he wasn't wrong, but that's hardly the point - the point was that Kariya was supposed to be the successor to the Matou family, but he more or less just ditched everyone and rendered himself a disgrace in the eyes of those who did remain within the hierarchy. Tokiomi was incredibly cruel to him because of this over the course of their battle, but when it became obvious that Kariya was desperate, in a huge amount of physical pain, and there was no way he'd win, but there was also no way he'd stop, Tokiomi did feel a huge surge of pity for him and ended the battle quickly, the way he would have against a normal opponent.

✔/✘ Tokiomi is a very trusting person. This is good in the World Of Pokémon, given that a major point of the series is trust and the power of friendship; at the same time, he's too trusting - he doesn't believe that anyone he likes and has befriended will betray or hurt him at all.

✘ Severe social problems, as outlined in the personality section above. These problems are so deeply ingrained into his personality that they belong in that section instead of this one, but a quick recap is as follows: he has difficulty expressing himself physically, and to some extent verbally; he doesn't understand social cues and often won't pick up on nuances in interaction; his grasp on personal relationships and how they work is very poor and his idea of where emotional boundaries lie is abnormal; he has difficulty following conversation that is anything except perfectly linear; overall, he's incredibly naive and immature, and he handles his social interactions in a way that reflects that.

✘ Tokiomi is very technophobic; in canon, he refuses to use even basic things like fax machines and telephones, and his house seems to rely on fire rather than electricity for light and heat, despite the series being set in 1993. He believes that magi shouldn't lower themselves to using common technology when they can rely on their skills instead; it's not going to be terribly pretty when he realizes that isn't an option here due to the nature of the Gear, nor is he going to think of anything outside of the Pokémon as being a valid weapon unless he's given very good reason to think otherwise.

✘ He's very quick to judge others. Once he decides he likes someone, they're immediately his friend and nothing will shake that; once he decides he doesn't like someone, they're disgraceful and horrible and he will continue to think of reasons to dislike them until someone beats him upside the head with a massive appeal to his sense of pity or something equally jarring (see: abovementioned fight with Kariya). Tokiomi also has a lot of pride in being a mage and is willing to openly declare himself to be such to those who know about magus society, and he isn't shy about declaring certain practices, behaviors and ways of thinking to be "beneath" him as a result; he's very haughty and set in his ways in terms of lifestyle, and once he's made up his mind it's insanely difficult to get him to change it.

✘ He has a tendency to be overly impulsive and not wait to see things through to the very end - this is shown early on in his tendency to grab things being written on before the ink is dry, risking smudging it all over because he simply has to read it right now...but it also comes back to bite him later, given that it extends to behavior like not verifying that he actually killed someone in a battle to the death, preferring to simply assume that No One Could Have Possibly Survived That and being on his way.

✘ His reasons for doing half the things he does quite simply do not adhere to Earth logic; a lot of his logic is incredibly roundabout and tangential, and this tends to present a lot of problems when he's trying to converse with people because he expects them to be able to follow what he was thinking when he did something, and doesn't realize that it looked...incredibly off-the-rails to everyone else.

✘ While Tokiomi does adhere to the generally accepted rules of mage-style battling, those rules are ruthless and seem to consist primarily of "BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF YOUR OPPONENT UNTIL THEY DIE, BUT DO IT HONORABLY." He's used to going no-holds-barred against people who are the same strength as he is or stronger, and he doesn't tolerate failure; as such, he'll likely have difficulty adjusting to the fact that you quite simply can't do that here, nor can you take someone out back and set them on fire, even if you have a serious problem with them.

This is getting rather old.

[Well, Johto, it seems someone is back and...less than pleased about it. At least this time he doesn't appear to be awkwardly holding Mom hostage in the name of getting answers, but given the fact that he's still standing outside calmly threatening the 'Gear, it's clear that he hasn't learned too much.

Oh, well. Second verse, same as the first - Tokiomi is outside Mom's HouseTM in New Bark Town, and he's got the 'Gear propped up on what's most likely a fence post. He has his Mystic Code with him, his hand resting lightly against the large jewel embedded into the head of it; he swings it upward, twisting his wrist easily around it and catching it lithely as it twirls up and over, pointing the abovementioned ruby directly at the 'Gear.]

Well-played, whomever you are; I don't believe you'll respond to this, and I have no intention of continuing to threaten you. But know this: as the head of the Tohsaka family line, I have no intention of backing down from any challenge you may place before me.

If it's a battle you want, in the end, it's a battle you shall receive.

Third Person Sample:
While it still didn't feel like it had been that long since Tokiomi had been in Johto, he still hadn't been quite prepared for the creature in front of him. He had raised one the last time he was here - he remembered that much extremely well - and the evolution hadn't been anything he had expected then, either; it was perhaps comforting to know that however long he spent in this strange would, the sight of what was best described as a large, flaming unicorn was never going to be something that struck him as normal.

Tokiomi had never really been one for animals; horses weren't really an exception to that. He could acknowledge that they had their uses, of course, but the fact of the matter was that his natural talent with anything along these lines was on par with that of your average rock; the fact that this...unicorn seemed more than able to set him on fire should he choose to actually ride the thing wasn't exactly comforting, either. Of course, there was also the chance that it could throw him...

...plainly, all of this had to do with the possible temperament of the unicorn in question, and nothing to do with the fact that Tokiomi had no idea what to do when it came to riding it. This would be why he had taken to pacing a slow circle around the creature - strictly in the name of study, of course - and had yet to actually get on with the whole riding process; he halted in his tracks when he realized the Rapidash was looking at him like he'd quite simply lost his mind.

The animals here were surprisingly intelligent, really; it was simultaneously impressive and mildly irritating, but for the time being, he supposed there was nothing else to be done about it. He laid his hands on its back, muttered something so quietly it was nearly inaudible about how he sincerely hoped this thing would use that intelligence to not burn him through his clothes, and vaulted up.

And. Well.

...Huh.

Apart from the fact that this was the most physical contact he'd had with any sort of animal in his life (and that was, undoubtedly, unpleasant, but not intolerable), this actually wasn't too terrible.

He reached forward a bit, patting the Rapidash on the side of the neck lightly before urging her onward as though all that stalling beforehand hadn't just happened; staying on the outskirts of this city forever wasn't an option.

Character
Name: Ray Beams
Series: Eureka Seven
Timeline: end of episode 27
Canon Resource Links: Wikipedia; E7 Wikia;

Personality: Ray is probably one of the most motherly people you'll ever meet. At first appearances, she's made of all smiles and greets everyone with a very loving voice. She's a sweetheart with a soft spot for children, having always wanted a few herself. While also deeply in love with her husband, Charles, Ray likes the idea of having a little family with the stereotypical routine which includes the mother making dinner and having it hot and waiting for her husband while he returned.

However, she's also one feisty young lady, Ray's not all sunshine and rainbows, as she was once in the military. Years ago, she was a member of the SOF--the Special Operations Force--but during the fight, she was swept up in the Seven Swell, which robbed her ability to give birth. Because of this, she harbors not only harbors a deep hatred for Eureka, but she also ragequit the military with her husband. They make a living as freelance mercenaries, doing odd jobs when called. It's an easier living, since they don't have to answer to everyone, although she doesn't mind that part so much. She's able to hold herself in combat, and she doesn't hold back. It's because of her time in the military that she's able to hold her own without taking much offense to insults or people pushing her. She can also take a punch--much less throw a few good ones of her own. She doesn't take things lying down, as she's very proactive and often the one to get everyone's butts moving.

But even with all of this, Ray's motherly nature is often her downfall. Once she takes a child-figure under her wing, they're often her soft spot, whether they decide to leave the nest or not. When it comes to the ones she devotes her heart to, she'll do just about anything for them. In Renton's case, she couldn't fight him, but she loved him enough to let him choose his own sides, however twisted she saw them to be. After all, if you love someone enough, you'll let them follow your heart - Ray takes this quite literally.

Strengths/Weaknesses: She's a very motherly person. Older than many and stronger, she's good when it comes to working with children of any age, especially those who want to be babied. She's also very protective of them - Ray will step in and help out or take over if it looks like someone younger wants or needs her assistance. Also, she doesn't take shit from anyone - Ray will not hesitate to smack someone for being an idiot. She's got quite a tongue on her, and while she rarely uses it, it's a good secret weapon when it comes to snarky discussion. While she's a sweetheart, beware the nice ones...

With her military background comes a physical and athletic strength. She's very strong and can hold her own in a fist fight, or a gun fight... sword fight.. Any fight, really. Ray takes no prisoners. And because she's so thin and light, she's also quite agile, so besides packing quite a punch, she's quick on her feet and can maneuver in small spaces or through vents and hallways. She's great when it comes to stealth activity. She's also very strategic. Because of the military, she's become quite skilled in coming up with plans that could benefit her or her husband in the end.

...She's also an amazing cook. Charles considers this to be her most important strength.

The hatred she harbors for Eureka is also one of her biggest weaknesses and the easiest way to upset her. Because she blames Eureka for the Seven Swell which robbed her ability to have children, she thinks Eureka stole everything from her. After all, Eureka has three children--even if they aren't hers biologically--and Ray doesn't think that's fair, especially since the only child she 'had' was Renton who, incidentally, was devoted to Eureka and chose to stay by her side. She's also so attached to her husband that without him, she literally falls apart. Her strategies become weaker and more passion-driven, and she makes more careless mistakes because she literally cannot think straight without being in contact with him. He is her rock, the only person that keeps her sane.

[For a good moment, Ray just stares at the gear. She's seated somewhere outside, her Cubone sitting on her lap, his little hands covered in what looks like blueberry jam. While his eyes are still teary, he's definitely not making much noise save for licking the sweets off his hands. It's a good enough distraction for her as she bounces him on her lap, while still staring at the gear, nearly speechless. But a few seconds later, she finds herself smiling a little.]

Parades are wonderful, aren't they? While I doubt I'll ever come to understand why a Jigglypuff needs to learn to tap dance, let alone six of them, I will say I did appreciate the entertainment. Apparently today is a Public Service Parade day to celebrate the work of Officer Jenny and Nurse Joy...

But since I'm out, I've decided to take the day off to treat Chiba to his first outing. Isn't that right, Chiba?

[The Cubone lets out an excitable 'Boooone!', wibbling in her lap. She has to smile.]

Who knew jam could be so effective in soothing a Cubone? They're sweet pokémon, just a little challenge. But what mother wouldn't be against one of those? [Rubbing his back again, she smiles at the gear.]

If anyone would like to join me, I'm at the café in Ecruteak. I'll also buy you a free drink, should you be thirsty. After all, traveling takes energy! You've got to remember to stay hydrated.

[Free advice from a caring soul. And with that, she shuts the gear.]

Third Person Sample:
Trying to bargain off days with Ariana wasn't even worth it. When Ray heard about the appreciation parade, she really wanted to sneak off of the job to watch it--not because they were the appreciated, upstanding citizens of Johto, but because she liked parades, and because Charles was meeting her that afternoon--but Ariana wanted nothing to do with it. After all, the officers were very, very against Team Rocket... Which was understandable, given Ariana's profession, but still! It wasn't like Ray hated the officers. They were just a mild annoyance, as were every police force no matter what the planet. But that honestly didn't stop Ray--she was going to that parade, damn Ariana's opinions!

Having created a rather brilliant lie about scoping out the city and robbing the tourists, Ray had received permission (from Petrel, bless his casual little heart) to hit up Goldenrod two days before the festival. Then a bit of tweaking in the helicopter's control panel while the pilot was off getting a burger had them "grounded" for a few days. And that was what had Ray sitting at a little cafe, flipping through a pamphlet of the popular goings-on happening around Goldenrod during the parade. Some carnival games, a few sales... a discount dinner sale at a restaurant? With a poké-daycare system?

...

Ray looked at her Cubone, who was currently whining as he stared at the crowds, then back at the pamphlet. This sounded like a good plan to her. A night on the town with her hubby... Oh! She needed to let him know she arrived! That had been the promise they made when formulating this plan. It was rather covert and far too sneaky for just a date with her husband, but damn it, Ariana couldn't stand in the way of her love!

...that and Ray just wanted to see if she really could mess with this world's technology. And, as the pilot would find out whenever he returned to the 'copter and found her missing, she could.

Whipping out her gear, she speed-dialed his number. "Charles, baby, are you in the city yet? I just touched in half an hour ago!"

Character
Name: Meiko "Menma" Honma
Series: Anohana
Timeline: Post series, as soon as she ascends to heaven.
Canon Resource Links: Wikipedia article and TVtropes page

Personality:

It is important to note that part of her personality is influenced by the fact that she is, officially, dead. Throughout the whole series, except for the flashbacks, she's shown as a ghost that only the protagonist, "Jintan", can see until the end. Despite her terrible death, Menma still keeps an upbeat and cheerful attitude most of the time, just like how she behaved when she was alive. Even though she appears as a teenager - around 16 years old just as the other protagonists - Menma still has the childish and immature traits of her younger years. In fact, having died at the age of 11, she retained the mentality of that time instead of mentally growing up like her "body" mysteriously did. Even so, she does show many hints of maturity, especially when we learn that she indeed is aware of her own death, but faces this tragic fact with a smile on her face, even as she cries.

Menma is, without a doubt, a kind and selfless girl. She always puts her friends and others before herself, valuing their happiness above her own. If you see tears in her eyes, chances are that she's crying over the suffering of her friends and loved ones instead of doing it over an offense she received. In one of the flashbacks, when Jintan was asked if he liked Menma, he snapped and called her "ugly". Unexpectedly, she didn't react badly, but instead she smiled in return, after an initial shock. Because she loves her friends that much, she wouldn't be as hurt by their mean words as she could have been. However, if she sees one of her friends hurt and in pain, she won't hesitate suffering with them, and stick with them however long it takes.

She hardly holds any grudges towards the people who wrong her. Although Jinta is partly responsible for her death - she fell and drowned in the river because she was chasing after him - she doesn't feel any ill towards him. Rather than that, she's got nothing but feelings of affection and pure love towards him, in a way that overtakes even the fondness she feels towards the rest of the Super Beast Busters. Thanks to Menma's absolute determination to bring her group of friends together once again, added to her radiant personality, Jinta will slowly overcome his guilt and reconnect with his childhood friends after fighting his way out of their internal conflicts, starting a new life once they manage to send Menma up to heaven, as she smiles one last time through her tears.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

+ Her non-confrontational and solar inclination allows her to befriend people easily.
+ She's often selfless and caring, especially towards the people she's friends with.
+ Though she's still childish because of her mental age, she rarely ever gets angry. At worst, you could see her get mildly irritated at things.
+ She has some grade of knowledge about how the world of Pokemon works, because of a similar in-world game she used to play a lot when she was still alive. However, the title (Nokemon), setting, and the creatures themselves are different than the original.
+ She doesn't have an ounce of malice in her, given that she's still got the innocence of a child. She will never betray your trust intentionally.

- Because of her overwhelming presence, she may come across as annoying.
- Though she's cheerful, on the other hand, she's also a crybaby who is very prone to crying as soon as she sees her friends in pain.
- Her innocence also leads to naivety, which makes her easy to fool and manipulate.
- She's immature and dense at times, and very much of an air-head, but that can be justified by her mental age.

Hello? Helloooo?

[ The feed opens to the image of two wide, bright blue eyes staring curiously at the camera. It then zooms out, as Menma pulls the device away from her face. Her finger then appears, to poke at the screen. ]

Can anyone see me? You can see me, right?

[ There's more poking, and then, a wide smile cracks on her gentle features. ]

I'm Menma! Nice to meet you all! I was told I can use this thing to talk to everyone, so~ Hmmmmm...

[ She glances around briefly, before returning her attention back to the camera. ]

So, who wants to catch Nokemon with me? It'll be fun, promise! Let's become friends and have adventures together. Okay?

[ A soft giggle. ] This heaven is super great! I'm so happy to be here~

Third Person Sample:

Is this... heaven? Where am I...?

Menma sat up, feeling the soft grass under her hands. Her blue eyes wandered around, finding trees and a blue sky dressed with a few cotton clouds. Instead of the image of Jintan, Anaru, Poppo and everyone else standing in front of her, crying and yelling goodbye... there was nothing more. Nothing but grass, trees and sky, as she scanned the area around her. With the tears still staining her cheeks, she took some time to recover from the surprise. This is heaven, the place she read so much about in fairy tales, although she couldn't understand why it was situated below the clouds. Shouldn't it be on top of the clouds? It must be heaven, though... and there was no single person around confirming that to her. She was alone.

She eventually stood up, and after one last sob, she wiped her face with the back of her hands. A breeze blew past her, the feeling of her dress brushing against her legs almost tickling her. That's right; she shouldn't feel sad. In the end, this was what she wanted all along. To find her peace, have her wish fulfilled, and leave her friends in the happiest note. It was hard and difficult, they all suffered so much, but in the end, the pieces of their broken hearts were reunited. They could all move on, he could move on... and so could she. The void in her chest was going to fade, eventually. What mattered the most, was their happiness, and how she helped them reach it.

Jintan...

Just as she began smiling to herself, the sudden noise of leaves rustling caught her in surprise. She turned, noticing that the nearby bush was moving suspiciously. What was that? Before she could approach and find out, something jumped out of the plants, startling her further.

"Eeh?!?" Menma gasped, finding herself face to face with a small creature. It was round, purple, with large leaves planted on top of its head, two tiny eyes and a mouth. "Are you... are you..." She pointed at it with a shaky finger, her jaw dropping comically. The next sentence came louder. "Are you a Nokemon?!"

... Maybe it was too loud. The odd creature would let out a yelp, and then turned on its tiny heels to escape back into the bushes.

"No no no wait! Come back heeeere!" She cried, diving into the bushes without a second thought. What was a stream of melancholic thoughts, became a wild chase that eventually left Menma worn out... and with an immense happiness pervading her newly beating heart, although the Oddish was nowhere to be found by the time she collapsed back on the grass in exhaustion.

For the first time in a long, long time... she felt alive.
