[Dave Strider]
Personality:
Dave Strider is a kid who maintains a cool facade. It isn’t exactly false! He’s fast to adapt to even the craziest of situations. While others are fumbling over new controls and mechanics he’s already backing them up. You’ll find no one more loyal than he is. Time and time again he’ll step up to help his friends even if it means dying repeatedly. But only for tasks he deems important. Most things Dave really doesn’t give a damn about.
He’s also kind of an asshole. He needles people about their interests and snoops into their crap. Yet, he doesn’t say much about himself or how he’s feeling. He wraps it up in misdirection and word play. Unless he’s flipping about something, you have to drag it out of him. When Dave freaks it breaks down his metaphors and commentary.
He tends to not see whatever surprised him coming. He always spots the surprise right before it hits and he’s left rolling with it. After a long history of this, he has a cynical roll with it because you can’t stop it sort of view. If it bothers him and believe me it does, he’ll cover it up.
Dave grew up in his successful brother’s shadow and sought to emulate him. It was hard to tell what part of Dave was DAVE and he wasn’t sure of it himself. His issues with his own identity have been semi-resolved but his insecurities have not. He downplays his accomplishments and doesn’t consider himself a ‘hero’. Despite that he’s a witty guy with an off the wall sense of humor adopted from his brother.
They call it ‘irony’ but it would be best considered the misconception of the subject. He removes a subject out of context and creates a joke within a joke. The whole secret of it all is it doesn’t really matter. He’s poking fun at the content, at himself, and everything else. It’s the real ‘joke’.
Let’s return to his superstar brother, Bro Strider. Dave hero worshipped him to the point he denied that he found his brother’s puppets creepy. As said before, he emulated him and tried his damnest to be just like him. Bro meant everything to him, yet there’s a darker side to his relationship with his brother. Dave could never defeat his brother. He always lost to him.
And none of that was resolved. Instead, Bro was brutually murdered and Dave was left with all of his problems. It was only after struggling against the obstacles against him, with only himself to rely on, that he came to see who he is.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths
X LOYALTY - If you earn Dave’s friendship whether you want it or not, you’re stuck with him.
X SICK BEATS - Music is one of the things Dave excels at. He’s not as good as his brother but he can still rock the house.
X SMILE FOR THE CAMERA - He’s great with a camera. For whatever reason his interests in this field include managing his own dark room.
X KNIGHT - Despite his attitude Dave is the sort to put himself in harm’s way to avert disasters that could befall on his friends. Even if it means his death.
X CASH FLOW - He’s capable at managing cash and using it only for specific purposes.
X LEVEL IT OFF - When everyone else is losing their mind, Dave is able to maintain a calm attitude. Even if he’s secretly losing it.
Weaknesses.
X PUPPETS - Don’t mind him. He’ll be as far away from you as he can get.
X CYNICISM - The first person to see the bad in a situation. In his mind you have to roll with it. It can’t be changed.
X APATHY - Let’s face this now. Most times Dave just doesn’t care enough. This comes back to bite him countless times.
X RELUCTANT HERO - Don’t let the asshole routine fool you. He’ll die repeatedly so no one else does. That’s just his job.

Third Person Sample: For all of the ups and downs of being a Pokemon trainer, it wasn’t that bad. It beat being a Sburb player hands down. He had yet to die and everyone pretty much said he didn’t have to worry about that. Dave put it out of his mind within the first week of his journey. The flaming pony aside, life was so normal he nearly didn’t know what to do with himself.
He figured it out pretty quickly. Snoop was a trusty companion on his adventures as he trudged into a forest to hunt for new pokemon to catch and train up. She knocked out her opponents with a kick and he found himself warming to the weird situation. As they moved through the foliage he felt something hit his head. Confused, he looked up just as a big fat rain drop splattered over his shades. “Shit.”
He reached out a hand and patted Snoop’s shoulder a bit too urgently for his own tastes. She was a fire pokemon. There was no way water drenching her flames could be a good thing. He poured over the map feature of his gear and steered them towards the nearest cave. Would she follow him if he took off? He had no idea.
Welp.
Dave snapped out his pokeball, called Snoop back into it, and darted away. Lightning cracked and he tore through the forest, ignoring any sounds or cries of angered pokemon. He would deal with all of that later. Shit shit shit shit. It really would have been a good idea to listen to the weather reports. Or something. He nearly got flattened when skidded and slammed into a tree. It was only training and his wits that kept the thing that fell out of the tree from landing on him.
Without a backward glance he made it the last few feet and ducked into the cave. His breath came out in explosive puffs of air as he took a moment to catch his breath. When he’d settled down he took Snoop back and dealt with her irritated glare. “What? You wanted to get rained on?”

Personality:
Are you taking notes on how to be cool? Jesus get a pen already.
Dave is considered a cool kid, but that isn't all there is to him.
Time and time again Dave has shown a loyalty and commitment to tasks he deems important. Such as nagging his friend John to save his own life. A version of Dave came back to the present dedicated to the task and even sacrificed his humanity to ensure things didn’t go to hell. His important tasks are always for the greater good of ensuring his friends’ safety and well being. For them he’ll sacrifice himself over and over. When he had to be killed, he didn’t tell his friend Jade she would be the one to do it. He wanted to protect her from as much suffering as he could. And while he can be reluctant to do something, his friends’ happiness is fairly important to him. He wouldn’t have involved himself with the game in canon, if his friends hadn’t asked him to.
Dave is concerned for the safety and well being of most people he encounters when their lives are in danger. He chose to take up a suicide mission in place of someone else. And he found sleep difficult after he witnessed countless souls being destroyed. Even when faced with his own corpse, he was more worried about how other people would react to it. Dave went as far as stretching one day into three times as long trying to help other people out. He didn’t ignore the ghost Meenah asking him questions. Instead, he encouraged her to follow her plan to gather her friends together. While he doesn’t think he’s a hero, he possesses the heroic instinct.
But one of his flaws is his inability to see trouble coming until it’s too late to stop it. As a child this meant being bailed out by his brother. Within the game, his future self would step in to protect him. Over time, he’s become quite cynical because he’s forced to roll with the moment. He can’t do anything to stop what’s happening when a situation turns bad like finding a version of himself with his throat cut open. While managing time has honed his discipline, it also makes this flaw more apparent. Because no matter what he does to affect things, he’s just following what was set to happen. Any time he sought to change things a version of himself died, or he doomed a timeline. It reinforces his thoughts that there is nothing he can do to fix things.
And it doesn’t help that he hides what he’s thinking while painting circles around his feelings with word dances and misdirection. However, all of his words have elements of truth buried within them as he never outright lies. He’s prone to deflecting any questions about his own feelings, or directing a conversation away from a subject that bothers him. Something his friends call him out on, but he doesn’t always acknowledge. Nor does he state his worries and concerns without tying it to teasing or a joke. This doesn’t make him any less of a truculent asshole when the mood strikes him to be. Which is often. But Dave isn’t heartless. When he decides to counter-attack against words or physical attacks aimed his way, his pushing in those cases is aimed to defeat his opponent, but not hurt them. Such as when an alien named Tavros kept bothering him, Dave finally turned the tables on him. Because he was sick of being pestered. He doesn’t pursue anyone once they’ve retreated, because the fight is over. He can go right back to what he was previously doing.
Which brings us to another of his bad habits and character flaws, rather than face what’s bothering him, he’ll cover it up. Until he’s pressed on a subject, it is buried. A canon example of this is the fact is he like his friend Jade had always been ‘awake’ on another world known as Derse. He avoided being conscious of it by wearing shades and cramming his head full of music to drown everything out. When he bothered to face the situation, he immediately went snooping around his sister’s room as a distraction. And when he was told about how to get the power he wanted, via killing himself, he went back to managing time to avoid thinking about it . And not even an hour after his brother’s death he redirected Terezi’s attempt to comfort him into a talk about justice. He even simplified and downplayed his relationship with Bro then switched the subject.
Despite these flaws, Dave is pretty reliable. He has a level head, and sound judgement in the face of most things tossed his way. His sister Rose seems to always use him as a sounding board for her plans. The idea of a suicide mission was addressed to Dave before anyone else. In the beginning he can be skeptical of his surroundings, but he comes around in time. When asked to do something, he does it. Like when he manipulated a planet’s stock exchange, or making a map requested of him. It just might take him hours to get around doing what you asked. He did take awhile to get a copy of the game to save Rose’s life, but he rescued her just in time.
Very few people witness his transition from skeptic to believer, because it’s an internal process. To those that can see it, he goes through his upsets, frustrations, and his metaphors or commentary sometimes break down into capslock. Or shouting, like he did when his sister knocked him out to take up his suicide mission to the Green Sun. Originally, he’d resisted the idea of the mission. After his death and revival, Dave went along with the idea. But he didn’t handle the alien Equius’s poetry turning into beastiality porn with any grace and told him to shut up. Another alien tried to make him consider going into a threesome right before his sister reminded him he used to hit on her, much to his horror and exasperation. In both cases, he reacted poorly, first turning a talk into a physical fight and the later sputtering at the subject of accidental incest.
He hides his emotions because he’s quite insecure, having lived and been brought up in his successful brother’s shadow. He was raised to show no weaknesses, or emotions. When he discovered his brother’s corpse, he didn’t cry. But in the past he tried to emulate Bro Strider only to find he could never measure up. He had the cool but he could never fully ‘get’ Bro’s jokes. He even found them border lining into disturbing. Such as turning muppet babies into a rendition of a murder scene. By the time he realized that he wasn’t a carbon copy of his brother, fear of being inadequate and taking some statements about himself too literal had become a daily thing. It was only made worse being stuck in his own shadow and as a result of his insecurities and low sense of self-worth, Dave downplays his accomplishments.
To make sure everything turns out alright, the nosy knight will poke at everything and everyone around him once. He has to know what’s going on, and he will stick his nose into anything he feels is important. It tends to come off as joking or teasing because it is. His sense of humor is dry and can be scandalous on purpose or morbid, putting others off. Time and time again he’s accused of not seeing when someone is in trouble, not giving a shit about them, or when his friends need to talk. He shows he’s aware of the interests of his friends and their lives, often pestering them before they bother him, or when they’re asleep. When they need advice he’s been there to talk and even if he can’t help, he does try to.
And when left to his own devices, while his friends are elsewhere, Dave will entertain himself. He talks to himself and he’ll randomly start projects out of boredom. He created a version of tumblr for the afterlife, for example. Things like this show he is clever and is excellent at finding solutions . Usually in daring and reckless ways. His adaptability makes him deadly in a fight and one to turn to in cases of trouble. Yet, he has a strong temper, sometimes stupidly doing things because his cool is lost and he’s attempting to escape the situation. He jump kicked a sword because he wanted to snap it in half.
Now we can see the full scope of Dave Strider. He is a loyal, attentive friend who can come off a bit needy when he wants attention. He’s left pages and pages of messages to his friends when they’re offline. But, once he’s won over, there’s nearly nothing he won’t do to ensure the safety of others. Even if it means he’s dying in their place or keeping information to himself. Dave is honest with his opinions on serious matters and ribs playfully when the situation isn’t important to survival. He’s willing to get blown up to fix a situation and shoulders responsibility without considering how it will wear him down over time. And he’ll keep moving no matter how tired he is. He truly is the knight that he doesn’t think he is.
Third Person Sample: You can’t place a warrior in a peaceful world without there being a complication. In the case of Dave Strider, it meant sleepless nights and reaching for a sword that was no longer present. All of his life he’d been raised to expect attacks from any direction and to be ready to fight for his life at a moment’s notice. Being without a blade made him feel self conscious and vulnerable, he didn’t like it. Dave pressed his thin fingered hands to his face and groaned.
He’d been trying to get a decent amount of sleep for two damn days. Why was it so difficult to achieve? It hadn’t been that hard on the meteor- His hands slid down his face as he stopped. And then he remembered the screaming. He held his breath before he let it out in a slow shaky exhale.
Like a dog eager to please, his memory drew up images of space cracking like a window pane. The voices bubbled up like a soundtrack flicked on in a radio complete with the faint bits of static. How many had died under the monster’s assault? He didn’t want to count. It meant focusing on the very reason that peace bothered him.
Because it was false. All he was doing was waiting. Like he had been before and now he didn’t have his mastery over time or his sword to shield himself and others from what was coming. Dave reached over to his bedside table and picked up his shades, sliding them over his eyes. He sat upright with a sigh and stared into the gloom. He needed a distraction and in sleep there were no more bubbles to play with. In waking there was only traveling on and honing the skills of his companions for whatever fight was ahead of them.
He scrubbed at his face with a hand and looked to the round ball sitting innocently on top of his clothes. The bright red gear of his godtier clothes didn’t match with the pokeball. All he could see was the discord between the music tracks that were two different lives. He slipped out of bed, brushing the clothes aside to pull on the shirt he’d worn the day before.
The world around him was a g-rated kiddie show but, he’d accepted he had no choice about that. Without timelines to manage, he was stuck with walking the linear line. For once, he hated that. Dave yanked on a pair of jeans and snatched up the pokeball. Until his situation changed, the only distraction he had was training his pokemon. He ran his fingers over the smooth metal surface and turned towards the doorway.
It was going to be another long morning of training.
