Major Raikov || Metal Gear Solid 3 || No Reserve
Name: Mallory
Personal Journal:
E-mail: chibi_raichu at hotmail.com
AIM: knuxiechan
Timezone: EST
Current Characters in Route: None
Character
Name: Ivan Raidenovitch Raikov
Series: Metal Gear Solid
Timeline: Portable Ops: After Snake rescues him
Canon Resource Links: wikia page
Personality: In a nutshell: "Raikov's just that kind of guy."
The unabridged version: Raikov is the kind of guy you'd probably want to punch or facepalm at. Due to the fact that he was Colonel Volgin's lover, the man is extremely spoiled. It's no surprise the two got along so well, seeing as they both strive to get what they want and can be extremely sadistic about it. Raikov is not afraid to act or treat people however he wants (eg: punching his subordinates in the face or insulting them for no reason), especially because no one can talk back to him about it, at least while Volgin was alive.
Because of that spoiled attitude, Raikov prefers to have others do his dirty work for him, especially when it comes to his life being in danger. Back at Gronzyj Grad, as soon as the alarm is sounded, he would a quick retreat to the restroom to hide. That seemed to be a favorite spot of his, considering the man is a glutton and has a weak stomach. Raikov is not incapable of fighting though, in fact he's rather good at it. (He has to be, considering he’s a GRU soldier.) He just prefers to avoid it if possible.
The man is also not the loyalist of people nor is very trustworthy. When CQC'd into questioning, Raikov has no problem spouting out his lover's weaknesses. Whether it's because he's a yellow bellied coward or he honestly believes this man couldn't possibly defeat the Colonel, who knows. That would later come back to bite him..
Another flaw of his is that he doesn't seem very detail oriented. (Or is atleast slow to pick up on things.) In the game, if Snake lays down food in the halls, Raikov will quickly run up to it and eat it without even questioning why food was randomly lying in the hallway or if it's actually edible. (Then again, the regular soldiers don't question why random porno mags are placed on the floors as well... Maybe it's a Groznjy Grad thing.) If Snake dons the scientist outfit along with the Raikov mask and bumps into him, Raikov at first is annoyed but then soon notices how... incredibly beautiful this person is before him. It actually takes him a few good seconds before he realizes that "wait a second, this guy standing in front of me LOOKS LIKE ME. This is not right!"
He must also have a soft side to him though, seeing as he is the only person Volgin truly cares about. It can't just be because of the good sex and that Volgin finally found someone willing to do so with him. (Although that's probably the main reason.)
After MGS3 and Volgin's death, Raikov seems to have lost a bit of his attitude now that he is no longer being protected by his precious Colonel and able to do anything he so pleases. He has been stripped of his rank and power and has no one, until Snake finds him again 6 years later. It’s unknown what happened to Raikov during those years but it’s obviously left him bitter as he’s very reluctant to join Snake at first, even going so far as to call him Volgin’s murderer. He is much more cautious than before and perhaps even a bit more independant. He has no one to rely on anymore, after all.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Ex-GRU soldier, which means highly skilled in firearms, combat/fighting.
+ He's a very talented artist. His usual style of drawing is figure/gesture drawing.
+ Hard working. (when need be)
+ A powerful crotchgrab.
+ Exceptionally good at seducing and manipulating men. (and women if need be)
+ Very good looking and prides himself in his appearance.
+ Considering he survived 6 years in the gulag then getting transferred to South America, he's tougher than he lets on.
+ Loves food and cooking.
- Raikov has no super special abilities seeing as he's a normal human.
- Abuses power.
- Would rather run and hide than deal with trouble.
- Flirts with every man ever.
- Has a general dislike for women.
- Spoiled brat.
- Prefers to attach himself to a powerful man for protection.
- Still hung up on Volgin.
- Quick to judge.
- Is a glutton with a weak stomach.

Major Raikov || Metal Gear Solid 3 || No Reserve
First Person Sample:
[The recording starts with Raikov looking down at the strange device in his hand. He's from the 60s – he doesn't know to properly work these new fandangled techno-gadgets. It's only been about a day since he first arrived.
There's yellow puff ball which most people would recognize as a Joltik curled up on his shoulder. Seems she's sleeping. Raikov curses softly before noticing the blinking light. About damn time he got the thing to record.]
Ah- Hello? Is this thing on...? I've been trying to figure out how these computer things work. It's bad enough I still haven't completely gotten battles or capturing Pokémon down yet...
[Plenty of trainers have probably seen Raikov scooping up Katya when she gets close to fainting and throwing a rock at the opposing wild Pokémon before running away or something equally as absurd.]
This is still all so much to take in...
[He sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose]
... And am I going insane or is my radio playing twenty-four-seven? I tried turning it off but the music won't stop. It's getting annoying. I can't be the only one having this problem. It's starting to interfere with my sleep and if I need to walk everywhere I can't afford to lose out on my beauty rest.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Third Person Sample:
Raikov stared at the yellow pompom that sat in his hand chattering away at him. He still wasn't quite sure what Big Boss had gotten him into... This wasn't the Soviet Union and this thing definitely wasn't a normal animal. Everything felt like it had happened so quickly. Big Boss finding him in that South American Prison and just randomly waking up in this strange place called Johto. I mean, having a pet would be nice... He was rather lonely. But... being a "Pokémon trainer?" He was having trouble wrapping his head around all the information that had been provided to him.
As he attempted to make sense of what he was reading in the Trainer Guide, he looked back to the Joltik. The Russian lifted the Joltik above his head and narrowed his eyes. How the hell do you tell the gender of something like this? The Joltik was far from amused and began to squirm between his fingers, her chattering getting louder. Finding it difficult to keep a firm hold on her, he picked her up by the scruff on the back of her neck – or what he assumed was her neck – and looked her in the eyes.
Which ones was he supposed to look into?He continued to hold her by the scruff as he checked his Trainer Info. The Joltik was registered to him and had a female sign next to the picture. Well, that answers that. After a few moments of inspecting the angered fluffball, he decided on the name... "Katya. That’ll be your name. Got it?" A simple but cute sounding girl name. The Joltik seemed to perk up a bit and chirped in response.
Raikov continued to read the Guide, reading over the part that informed him he could keep his “starter” in its pokéball. He honestly considered it for a second but she was tiny enough to ride on his shoulder or head without really disturbing him so he opted to have her out. It’d be nice to have some company as well. He attached the ball to his belt and placed Katya on to his shoulder. Katya scuttled around before getting comfortable and nestling herself against Raikov's neck.
At least she seemed to understand that he was her owner and hopefully would behave herself. After what felt like forever reading the Guide, Raikov let out a sigh and scratched his head. Battles... He was going to have to battle with the electric dust bunny resting on his shoulder? How could she even survive at her size? Then a rather depressing thought dawned on him: He was alone in this place and everything here was completely foreign to him. The animals, the technology, even the people felt different. Adjusting to such a drastic life style change would be difficult, perhaps even more difficult than the gulag. He felt like a man lost in time.
But there was one happy note to his sudden awakening in Johto: He would get a new start on life. He had no one left for him back in his world - well, aside from his parents. But his father probably disowned him after hearing he had been thrown into the gulag, thus now allowing his mother to contact him even if she wanted to. He tried not to think about it too much. No one here knew of his past actions or the reputation that followed him. If he looked at it that way, it felt like a weight off his shoulders. He didn’t have to worry anymore. Still, the Russian couldn’t deny wanting to find someone to latch on to like he had with Volgin. Someone to take care of him so he didn’t have to deal with anymore hardships. That was the life he wanted originally, before Big Boss ruined everything.
The negative thoughts were beginning to rile him up and he stood up in a huff, closing the guide and putting it into his backpack. He turned towards the sign that simply stated “ROUTE 29” and checked his map for a moment before speaking to Katya.
"Guess we should get going, huh?" Raikov said, gently scratching his new partner on her head. It was now or never. Katya trilled in response and moved to sit on the top of his head as he began to travel down the dirt road to Route 29.
