Personality:
One way to describe Edward is stubborn. Despite what people may say if he has his mind set on something then he’s going to find a way to make it happen, which is what drives him forward through most of his life. Sometimes his stubbornness gets him into trouble but Ed tends to sticks to his guns and only giving in to certain things. He’s very goal-oriented as well, focusing on returning his brother to his body in some way or another. Yet Ed doesn’t seem as determined to get his own body back to normal but he agrees with Al whenever it comes up. While Ed is willing to do almost anything to make things right, he’s not willing to sacrifice people in order to achieve it. His goals aren’t the only thing he’s stubborn with as Ed is the sort of person to believe in something and stick to it, even if it means he gets hurt in the process. And while there are times where it can blind him to other things it doesn’t completely rule his life, a lesson he learned the hard way.
To go with his stubbornness is his strong will that can often push him through situations where it seems things are hopeless. While he does have his moments of depression Ed can bounce back fairly quickly, sometimes with a push from someone else. He just needs a reminder of his goals and that he can’t just give up. Ed has his beliefs and while sometimes the truth of something is horrible he can’t just go along with it. There’s clearly a line in the sand that he himself can’t cross and he hates to see other people crossing it too. On top of all of that Ed is very determined and driven by his goals. This combination of traits usually pays off for him such as getting an alchemy teacher, recovering from automail surgery in a year instead of three, becoming a State Alchemist. Once his mind is set on something Ed has a hard time letting it go, though he’s learned that some things just aren’t possible.
Edward has a pretty big ego that’s often well backed-up by his skills and knowledge. Sometimes it does get the better of him and results in more trouble then he expected but most of the time Ed does come out on top. It’s really bad when faced with opponents of any kind or Colonel Mustang. His ego often leads to him being cocky and again, while he has the skill and knowledge to go with it, it often makes people angry and want to strike out at him. Ed really doesn’t have any issues being cocky when he should be serious and often finds enjoyment with some battles, whether they be verbal or physical.
It doesn’t help that he can be petty at times, often being offended at the smallest of things when others would just let them roll off of them. No other subject is as touchy as his height is. Someone can make a remark about being small or even just mention a word that could be taken as a short joke (if one is looking for them) and he can go into a rampage. Usually this is accompanied by a need for physical violence and over-exaggerating what was said which often results with Ed needing to be restrained by his little brother. In fact most of time Ed tends to deal with his conflicts with acts of violence or outrage, it doesn’t matter who it might be. It doesn’t help at all that Edward has a very short temper and is quick to anger. Whether it is his short complex or dealing with serious matters, Ed’s temper often gets him in trouble.
To make matters worse Ed has a tendency to be reckless which ends up with him being seriously injured or breaking his automail. Thankfully his determination, strong will and stubbornness often mean that he doesn’t run away from a fight but he also won’t let himself die either. Most of his fights usually result in a lot of damage to surrounding buildings and he doesn’t tend to think about it until after the battle is done and he has an angry mob after him. Ed is also the sort to leap before he looks, to jump in feet first without planning first which can cause him to panic a little but his quick thinking saves him in the end.
While enemies get the violent approach other people get a different sort of treatment. His way of solving situations can be attributed to the fact that Ed can be abrasive and rough. Ed doesn’t tend to sugar-coat the truth for people, not even when they’re hurting emotionally and could do with some comfort. Life sucks but if they can stand up on their own two legs then they should keep moving forward. It’s a form of encouragement – Ed’s version of encouragement actually. Sometimes it can be called sympathy with a harsh twist as it usually gets people to move forward and continue on with their lives. Really he’s just not that good at dealing with giving people comfort, though he tries a little harder to be nicer to those he’s formed close bonds with. That’s when Ed shows his real compassion for people. He also shows kindness towards most children in his own way by making it seem like it was his idea to spend time with them.
Due to the brothers’ failure to bring their mother back to life and the consequences of the rebound Ed’s grown to be a sarcastic cynic. He happily and bluntly relieves people of their delusions of god, reality and their self-importance. While he himself is an agnostic and often makes comments about god he neither believes or disbelieves if god is real or not, he simply sees the (sometimes harsh) truth that’s laid out in front of him. If anything Ed sees the world through alchemy, Equivalent Exchange is everywhere just like the lesson he learned from his teacher – one is all, all is one. They are all a small speck in the grand scheme of it all, them being the one, and when he dies he’ll become part of the all.
Sometimes Ed has an issue with authority figures, namely Mustang who Ed has a tendency to harass any chance he can get. While he can be respectful if he wants or needs to, he generally tends to treat everyone more like some sort of friend than someone with a higher or even lower rank than him. He doesn’t hesitate to poke fun at people or being brutally honest with them, though Ed does know when to hold his tongue most of the time. Sometimes he can even be a bit vindictive and can rub people’s failures in their face or give someone an ironic sense of justice. Ed has discovered that there are dark, sinister shadows lurking within the military so he’s become very cautious of whom he trusts and who he doesn’t. Yet once someone has gained Ed’s trust he tends to stick with them like a loyal dog. However there are, of course, some people that he would trust far more than others and some he trusts begrudgingly as there’s some sort of conflict between them.
Edward is very energetic most of the time. He doesn’t like to sit still unless he has something to do such as research. It means that Ed loves to travel and is very impatient. Things often have to be done on his schedule or he feels as if he’ll die from boredom. However, there are times when he can be very stationary for long periods of time besides just studying, though not in the sense of being physically still and more sticking in one place for long periods of time. As long as there’s something to keep his attention, Ed can usually find some kind of busy work. Sitting still just isn’t really his thing for the most part unless there’s a book in front of his face. He also despises milk in any and all forms, except in stew and claims it to be something like a life-time enemy of his.
Because of their mother’s death and father’s disappearance, Ed has some parental issues. While he loves, adores and even tried to bring back their mother, he has a lot of anger towards their old man. He blames Hohenheim for their mother’s death as their father had left them and shuns his father’s attention. Ever since their failed attempt at human transmutation Ed had carried around both his sins and his guilt, too afraid to express the latter, especially towards his brother who has to live a shell of a life thanks to their dabbling with forbidden arts. While he may not freely talk about what they did or the full consequences of their actions, Ed literally lugs around his sins in the form of automail. However it’s the other situations that tend to be the heavier burden such as when they discovered the fact that the Philosopher’s Stone was made by sacrificing humans. There are times when Ed questions if all of this is a form of punishment for committing an alchemy taboo.
Edward Elric | Fullmetal Alchemist | Reserved
⊖ Excels in hand-to-hand combat & spear/staff & short blades.
⊖ Has lots of energy and experience traveling long distances. He's built pretty sturdily.
⊖ Knowledgeable in chemistry and alchemy.
⊖ Very creative in his transmutions.
⊖ Pretty brilliant, if he does say so himself.
⊖ A quick thinker. He can be in the middle of a battle and turn it in his favor pretty fast.
⊖ Doesn't take crap from people for long. He can put up with it for a time, eventually Ed's gonna get them.
⊖ Determined/goal-oriented. Ed sets his sights on a goal and he won't stop to achieve it, no matter what sort of bumps they experience along the way.
⊖ Outgoing. Well, I wouldn't really call him outgoing because he's not exactly sociable or friendly. But he is approachable. Finding something to talk about isn't all that hard with Ed.
⊖ Tricky. This may not be good for the people who find themselves on the wrong side of him but he can easily trick stupid, proud people into giving away their secrets.
⊖ Puts all his notes in travelogue form. All alchemists disguise their work with some sort of code. A travelogue is what Ed uses. Not even Al can decipher it.
⊖ Speed and agility. Despite the fact that he will hit you for calling him short, Ed's size actually works for him. It makes him faster and more flexible then some of his opponents.
⊖ Loyal. While it's not always easy to gain Ed's trust and loyalty, once a person has it, it's pretty hard to lose. He will come to their side and fight for/with them.
⊖⊗ Automail right arm and left leg.
While it means Ed has excellent built-in weapons, it can also be something of a burden at times. Especially considering he doesn't take very good care of it, or the fact that it gets broken. Good thing his mechanic is here. Thanks to Winry it can survive in the cold now but it burns in the heat.
⊖⊗ Protective older brother mode.
Most of the time Ed doesn't have to worry about his brother in a fight for three reasons. 1. Al grew up learning how to fight alongside him. 2. Generally he's a giant suit of armor. 3. He's never ever beaten his little brother when he's been stuck in the armor. Though that doesn't mean that Ed doesn't worry at all. Actually, Ed pretty much worries about his brother all the time. How can he not when it would be easy to lose him by breaking the blood seal? But more importantly, Ed's drive to get his brother's body back is one of the big To-Dos on his list because who knows how long it'll be before his soul is pulled away from the armor. Sometimes people try to threaten his brother and Ed can brush it off but then there are other times when he just can't and it really gets to him. ⊖⊗ Protective mode/shonen hero complex.
Like with above Ed is protective over his loved ones. So much so that they can be used against him. While, yes, they can be a strength as he always tries to be happy around them and stay strong/determined it also makes them a weakness. Even Kimblee figured this out and used Winry to get Ed to do what he wanted. And it doesn't really just stop at loved ones as there are times when random innocent people get involved. Ed is not the type to let people get hurt/killed because of him or even his brother. ⊖⊗ High pain tolerance.
Again, a good and bad thing because that means Ed can take his licks and keep going. Lost a limb when trying to transmute his mother? No problem, let's give up more to save Al's soul. Pole jammed through his side? Let's pull it out. In fact, Ed was able to go through automail surgery for two limbs as a kid when some adults won't even try it. He also endured the pain to recover in a year. But this is also pretty bad because it means Ed won't stop fighting until he's on the brink of death if he has to keep going.
⊖⊗ Alchemy obsessed.
While this has helped him quite a lot in the past and Ed pretty much excels at it, it's also a crutch. Need something built? Use alchemy. Need a weapon? Create it with alchemy. This has pretty much been a constant in Ed's life ever since he was young and he depends on it a lot. Alchemy pretty much consumes his life all the time, whether it's using it to studying it. It makes normal, everyday tasks a bit harder for him to do but that doesn't mean he can't. Alchemy is just easier. He can also get sucked in to studying it and ignoring everything around him for long periods of time.
⊖⊗ Equivalent Exchange.
This is a concept most alchemists follow - "In order to obtain or create something, something of equal value must be lost or destroyed." Ed too, follows it for the most part. Not just in alchemy but also in life in general. It can work out pretty well for Ed a lot of the time - give something and get something in return - or it can bite him in the ass at times - the price could be too high to pay. But it's real disadvantage comes when others disregard it completely. There are some who will willing take and take without giving anything in return, there are some who will do terrible things no matter what the cost - something Ed is not willing to do. It's easy to get one up on Ed if the other is willing to throw away the principals of Equivalent Exchange to do it.
⊖⊗ Stubborn.
The stubbornness that Ed shows can be a good thing in the sense that he never gives up. He refuses to give an inch on his beliefs and goals, even if it means taking the long way around to achieve what he desires. Trouble is he never gives up. Not when he's bleeding and dying because dammit, he's just too stubborn to stay down permanently. Screw everything else -- Ed knows what he wants and if you're standing in the way, he'll go through you if he has to, especially if he doesn't like you.
⊗ Has a short temper
all the timesometimes. Except in battle he tries to keep a cool head.⊗ HE IS NOT SHORT, DAMMIT!
⊗ Sleeps. A lot. Sometimes like a log...and snores.
⊗ Eats a lot too.
⊗ Enough guilt to last a lifetime. He keeps some of it bottled up.
⊗ Self-sacrificing. Ed will gladly give himself over if it means the safety of other people.
⊗
Cats. He's allergic. No, he's not but god, Al would drag around a million cats if Ed let him.⊗ Dogs and children. Alright, not exactly. He kind of lets them dogpile on him because he likes them so much. The kids part though is really true. He's a pretty big softie when it comes to kids, especially when they're lonely ones. Ed tries to act like they're such a big bother but he doesn't fight too hard when they want to play.
⊗ Terrible at phoning home. It's not really the fact that he's bad at it but more that he doesn't want to call with bad news.
⊗ Trouble magnet. No seriously, he must have a target painted on his back
or that red coat serves as a beaconbecause Ed always seems to manage to find trouble wherever he goes.⊗ Nightmares. Ed has some pretty horrendous nightmares thanks to the things he's seen.
⊗ Refuses to kill. It's tough when the bad guys play dirty and you don't. :|
⊗ Loud and rude. Not really good for being stealthy or making friends (though he somehow manages to collect people anyway).
⊗ Teacher's scary, Al.
⊗⊗⊗⊗ We meet again, you bastard. AKA: Milk is evil.
⊗⊗⊗⊗ Van Hohenheim. Ed pretty much dislikes his own father for walking out on them and not coming back before mom died. Talking about Hohenheim is not something he likes to do, and he definitely doesn't like hanging around him - but Ed can put up with him if he has to.

[When it flicks on there's a flash of red and yellow in between skies of blue, green trees and brown dirt. Quick breathing as if someone's running and sounds of uneven footsteps as the thud against the ground.]
QUIT FOLLOWING ME YOU DAMN MUTATED BIRD! I DON'T HAVE ANY FOOD FOR YOU! [Anyone who's not gotten sick from watching the bouncing video will get a good view of a large Skarmory flying along behind the new arrival. It's keeping up pretty well with the running kid but it seems this kid is pretty determined to get away from it as he puts on another burst of speed.]
[He's quick to dart into the trees and after a minute it looks as if he's lost the Pokemon as he hides under a tree. Then he grins cockily as the video focuses in on his face fully. Say hello to one Edward Elric everyone.]
Lost it.
[Ed stands up, brushing the dust of his red coat thinking he's clearly victorious. That is...right before everything goes blurry again and there's a lovely shot of the ground with sounds of fighting right before it shuts off.]
[It comes back on a few minutes later to give everyone a video of Ed looking disgruntled and irritated with the Skarmory standing behind him (oh look they're practically the same height) - NOMMING ON HIS PONYTAIL.]
Alright. Someone tell me what the hell this thing wants from me and STOP EATING MY HAIR!! [He jerks his hair away from the Pokemon, distracted from the PokeGear for a minute.] And how to get rid of it. Also, directions back to Amestris would be great right about now too, I've got important things to do tomorrow. I seriously hope it doesn't require going back to Creepy Town with the weird woman who thinks she's my mom.
[The Skarmory starts reaching for his hair again with its beak and Ed's eye twitches before he shifts away from it a step. Or two.] Information in general would be great. Like why there's been music playing since I woke up and how to get it to stop. It's already starting to get on my nerves. I haven't had time to go through all the stuff "mom" gave me yet with this thing following me. [Jabs a white gloved thumb at the Pokemon creeping closer.]
Al, Greed. If you guys are here, give me a call. [Nope, no - not going to ask for Hohenheim.] Winry, you too if you got dragged into this crazy place.
[Doesn't plan on asking for anyone else. If they know him, they'll show up.]
Third Person Sample:
Right. Okay. So waking up in a strange house with some woman calling herself his 'mom' did not go over well with this particular new arrival. The instant he'd been able, Ed grabbed his 'stuff' and bolted out the door, not even taking the time to look through it. To be honest the only thing that was familiar was the red coat he'd made not even an hour ago. Standing outside the house he'd woken up in, he put the backpack down and shrugged out of the plain brown one he'd been wearing to keep himself from standing out back home.
He stuffed the brown one into his backpack before slinging it over his shoulder, but not before a strange device fell out that he collected before standing. Ed could go through the contents later, after he figured out where he was and how he was supposed to get back. Sitting around here was not an option. For a moment he focused in on the device that he still held - not sure what it was. Looked like something Winry would love.
No no no. Now was not the time to be thinking of that. What he had to do was get back to Central so he could stop Amestris from becoming a Philospher's Stone. They could not afford a distraction. Looking around the little town reminded him a lot of Risembol which meant he was probably on the outskirts of the country somewhere. And there was music. Possibly from a speaker somewhere.
That was unhelpful.
There was also no sign of anyone who he'd been around just before waking up here. It doesn't stop Ed from moving through the houses, calling out names. "Al? You here? Greed - Ling! Mr. Gorilla, Lion King! If you bastards are here then you should show yourselves."
With each step Ed took it felt more and more like there was something watching him, following. Not good. Greed had said that Al hadn't been Al. Not good. Whatever had his brother could have come too. He caught a glimpse of something out of the corner of his eye - the clear glint of something metallic as he turned around the corner of one of the houses. Faster and faster. Until he was running and whatever was chasing him was still following. He skid around another corner and stopped, spinning quickly -- ready to attack whoever it was. Or whatever.
What Ed did not expect is a giant metal bird staring him down. It was as tall as he was! "What are you? A new chimera? Can you talk?"
"Skarmory!" Was the only thing that came out of its mouth.
Was it even a word? Ed didn't think so. Maybe that was its name. He grinned, ready for a fight with it. "It doesn't matter. If you want me, you bastard, you'll have to come get me!"
A clap of his hands, preparing to transmute the device in his hand into a weapon and--!
Nothing!!
"Shit!" Why wasn't his alchemy working?
No time to figure it out as the creature started towards him. While he was loathed to do so, Ed turned tail and ran. He veered when he saw a path clearly leading out of the town, every so often attempting to get his alchemy to do something, anything.
