Personality: Gene is one of the many countless gads of outlaws that inhabit frontier space. It's a hard life, and not meant for those with a meek constitution. Yet somehow, through it all, Gene has managed to keep his love of adventure and thirst for new experiences.
Gene has a cavalier attitude toward his life, preferring to leave a lot of things to chance and simply skirt by tough situations with a mixture of skill, resourcefulness, and plain old luck. He's a man with a dream. One day he's going to be a big-shot in the universe, come hell or high water. He's not going to let a silly thing like pirates, authorities, trained killers, or basic logic get in the way of his goals. He's a risk-taker, and believes that somehow things are just going to work out in his favor if he can just bullshit long enough. He's Gene Starwind, how could it go any other way?
Gene is somewhat defined by his lifestyle. The show is called "Outlaw Star", after all. What exactly is an Outlaw? In the age that Gene lives in, there are basically three types of people. There are those who follow the commonly agreed upon galactic laws, and just want to go about their lives in the civilized worlds, doing whatever their business entails. The regular folk, those who live by the law. Of course, any new frontier has its highwaymen, and the Pirates are those in this future era. Space Pirates, organized into multiple clans, with multiple origins. They clash with galactic law enforcement frequently. They both have their own laws, loyalties, and levels of bureaucracy. Then there are people like Gene. Outlaws are self-interested parties who don't owe allegiance to either side. Loners who play by only their own rules and seek their fortune in any way they see fit. They come in all dispositions, but the common thread is their stubborn will to live outside of having their destinies controlled by others. Living by your own rules is part of the Outlaw life, and Gene is no exception. He even prefers to run his own business. "Starwind and Hawking" handles everything from bounties to body-guarding, and everything in between. Granted, they're always in the red, but they're happy with their lives and Gene gets to basically make his own hours. Still, he's not good with minutia, so Jim has to handle all the finances while Gene is doing the physical work. Gene shows a flagrant disrespect to anyone who tries to enforce rules or restraints on him. He's flippant to interstellar law enforcement, something that has landed him in lock-down before, and faces down the fearsome Kei Pirates with no fear. Any other party getting in his way tends to get the same treatment, including other Outlaws. When Gene got sequestered in one of the most brutal prisons in the galaxy just to find one man, he deliberately incurred the wardens wrath on several occasions, even knowing the beating he'd get for it.
Another aspect of outlaw life Gene fully embraces is the love of wine and women. He's a hard partying man who has difficulty turning down a good time when he sees it. This particular fault has gotten him into trouble more than once, but the arrogance of youth tends to blind everyone equally. Gene drinks fairly frequently, over-eats to excess, and shamelessly flirts with any beautiful woman that catches his eye. The women are definitely his most persistent problem, and it's a good thing he has someone level-headed like Jim to at least temper his behavior. He manages to hit on two-of-three female members of his team, even ending up in a relationship with one of them. On hot spring planet Tenrei, Gene was distracted several times on his mission by the sight of his female teammates bathing, which ended up with him getting cracked full-force in the face by Suzuka when she caught him peeking. Catching sight of Aisha's body after escaping a super-heated hot spring so flustered him, that he fell right back in. The coup-de-tat was at the end of the mission. Gene was so tunnel-visioned by the sight of a woman stripping on the video he took, he failed to recognize the extremely obvious timer on the lower corner, ending with an explosion that left him scorched and exhausted. Hell, even Gene's introduction has him using the money from a bounty to have a fun night in the Red Light District, where he ends up in the bed of a call girl. Jim has admonished him before that women would be the death of him, and he's almost been right several times. It remains to be seen if his relationship with Melfina will make a better man of him.
Underneath that roguish exterior, however, is a man who still suffers like everyone else. Gene lost his father when he was only 15, and going into space for the first time. Pirates murdered his dad right in front of him, and he jettisoned Gene to safety. This led to two major issues that plagued Gene for the next five years. His absolute, searing hatred of pirates, and his fear of going into deep space. Through the course of his adventures, Gene manages to overcome these issues. Wouldn't be much of a space story if the main character couldn't enter space, right? He still dislikes pirates, though, and just about anyone who likes to harm innocent people. Gene also starts with a bit of identity crisis while he was stuck on Sentinel III. The curse of being a free spirit is that you make your own path, for better or worse. Gene felt "stuck" in his life, like he couldn't move forward. He was just getting by on whatever he could. His risky job and carousing with women was just a way of filling that void, and it eventually just became normal to him.
Also, despite his somewhat careless actions, Gene has proven himself to be a fast-thinking, natural-born leader to the people around him. He might not have the raw intelligence of Jim, or the cool-headedness of Suzuka, but his ability to generate ideas in a tense situation and his skill at adapting to new challenges has made him a formidable opponent to those who cross.him. Not to mention the lengths he'll go to. If you're one of Gene's friends, he will literally cross Hell on barefoot just to help you, even if there's a good chance of his own demise. He doesn't leave a friend behind, and he never leaves a client hanging. He's frequently under-estimated by his opposition, only to end up getting one over on them in the end. He's a lot more resourceful than most people realize, and probably a bit more so than even HE realizes, even with as much as he boasts to the contrary.
As for Gene's softer side, that's probably best seen in his interactions with his teammates.
Gene and Jim are basically a surrogate sibling pair. Jim, despite being younger, is years ahead of Gene in responsibility and maturity. Yet at the same time, he has moments where he completely reverts to just being another kid. Gene is an irresponsible and brash man-child, yet seems to have incredible moments of clarity and conviction. They smooth out one another's faults and form one cohesive unit. Both would do anything in their power to protect eachother, so they do it in the only way they know how. Jim uses his brain, while Gene uses his body. Ever since the two met, they've been inseparable, even when Gene's behavior drives him absolutely crazy. These two are TIGHT.
Melfina is Gene's significant other and navigator, and the first "real" relationship that he's had in his life. Despite his history of rampant womanizing, Melfina is the person that really shines in his mind. She's caring, soft, and meek, all things that seem to run contrary to Gene's rough and tumble life-style. What started between them as a need to help her out, gradually became a romantic relationship between two people who just wanted to find their place in the universe. She helped "unstick" Gene's life, while Gene proved to her that she was more than just a tool to be used by other people. Her influence is one of the factors that forces Gene to "grow up", even if just a bit.
Ah, Aisha and Gene. These two are complete idiots when they interact. IDIOTS. Mainly because they're so damned alike, and unable to admit it. Aisha reflects every bad habit Gene has and then some. She's brash, argumentative, focuses so much on a goal that she sometimes misses the details, doesn't think about consequences, and is willing to battle at the drop of a hat. She's even more a fighter than he is, making her the real powerhouse of the ship. The two dig at each other in the way friends and siblings often do, little barbs that have no real hatred behind them, designed to annoy each other and amuse the people around them. The two originally had a very contentious relationship, that gradually deepened into mutual respect and comfort. She also serves as a big sister to Jim, offering him more comfort than Gene is usually capable of giving him.
Suzuka probably has the most surprising relation to Gene, considering the two met while she was trying to murder him. Gene managed to best her, a relentless, famous assassin, while protecting Fred Luo. This transferred her job to getting rid of Gene, before she could return for Fred. The two forged a strong bond over the course of the series, with Suzuka serving as a useful companion in her own right. Her style and agility worked as a fine complement to the brutish Aisha, and the quick-witted, ever-resourceful Gene. The two have the most professional relationship, enabled by the fact that she almost always keeps her cool. However, it's hinted toward the end that she may have fallen in love with Gene, and chooses to follow him out of affection. Especially true, since her employer ended up unable to pay her contract fee, erasing her original reason for following him.
Strengths/Weaknesses: Gene's a bit of an odd bird in that both his strengths and weaknesses revolve around the same trait. His immense ego. Gene's overconfidence causes him to be irresponsible in his life, step into fights he shouldn't, hit on women who are dangerous to his continued existence, and take on missions that are borderline suicidal.
When viewing it through a more positive lens, that same egotism makes him true to his word, since he believes in the strength of his reputation, makes him fearless in a battle, and gives him the focus to relentlessly chase a goal until it's complete, no matter how dangerous or unlikely the outcome.
Besides, it's not like his confidence is unwarranted. Gene is only 20, but he's good at bounty-hunting, able to take on multiple opponents if pushed to it, popular with the local girls, and always keeps to his promises once he's committed himself. Even in the course of just the series, Gene manages to mature a bit one he realizes he has bigger responsibilities than before. He has to grow out of his immature grandstanding naturally.
Gene has a slightly above average level of endurance, is in peak physical condition for a man his age, and has been shown to be a resourceful combatant with a working knowledge of various kinds of weapons. He's very good when it comes to coming up with plans on the fly.

Samples
First Person Sample: ...Okay, let's straighten this whole, messy business out, shall we? I'm a pretty cool guy. I can be reasonable.
[Gene lets out a deep breath, smoothing back his shaggy red hair, only for it to fall back into a mess again.]
I'm Gene. Gene Starwind. Now I don't know if any of you guys are from the Hei Phong system, but I'm kind of a big deal out there. New rising star on the galactic scene, got it? Here's the problem. Much as I love the adorable assortment of little critters you've got running around the place, and the lovely care package I've been given, I'm afraid I have to decline.
[He points downward.]
See, while I'm here...
[Then points up.]
I'm not out THERE. Doing the whole "rising star" thing. Hard to get more famous when I'm not doin' actual jobs, right? Not to mention that space-faring vessels have a hell of a lotta' upkeep and that requires money. Money from JOBS. Which I'm not DOING. See why I can't be here? That's not even factoring in how obviously lost my crew would be without me.
So I'll tell you what, why don't one of you guys contact the head honcho and see about sending me home? Come on, do me a solid. I promise I'll pay you back when I hit it big.
Third Person Sample:
"Gah!" Gene yelped, falling out of the bed with loud THUMP, as his skull collided with an end table. He jumped to his feet, cursing and rubbing his forehead with his palm. Perfect. Just the way he wanted to wake up after a night of heavy drinking. Jim was going to chastise him again, he knew it.
"Yo, Mel," he said, turning back to the bed, "It's time to get u--Mel? Mel? Hey, Mel! Where are you? You get up already, or what?"
That was when he noticed something was VERY off. Even with hangover vision, it was clear that this wasn't his room, and his bed was big enough for just one. From the view out the window, he was back on solid ground at the least. He pushed it open, immediately getting hit in the face with smell of a flowery meadow on the wind. The sun was shining, the weather fair, and the sound of happy citizens could be heard bustling about the town. Yeah, this was WAY too nice.
"Alright, no need to panic, Gene. Just get it together," he said, shutting the window and pushing his back to a wall, "No bars, no restraints, I'm not imprisoned. Just gotta' hold on until I can contact the ship. No big deal. I've got this."
It was as he went to the door that he noticed the satchel.
"The hell is with this crap?" he said, looking over the contents. The spheres were the strangest item by far. He turned one in his hands, before finally tossing it over his shoulder. "Ah, whatever."
Upon hitting the ground, the sphere grew and opened, surprising Gene with a sound and light show. After it was done a small, orange reptile stood on the ground. Its tail seemed to burn, but the creature showed no discomfort. Didn't seem to attack, either. What the hell WAS it?
"So, uh...you friendly or what?" he asked, prodding it with his foot a few times. Another item fell from the satchel when he moved, which he picked up and examined. As he turned back to the little beast, it spoke.
"Charmander. Fire pokemon. The flame on its tail shows the strength of its life force. If it is weak, the flame also burns weakly."
Another surprise. Not that talking machines were much of a shocker to him. Still, why did he even have all of this?
"Okay...Nice to meet you too, I guess," he said, turning back to the pokemon, "Charmander? Silly name, don't you think? You got an owner, or what? Is this stuff all his?"
After a moment of deciding what to do, he slung on the satchel.
"Weeeeell, tough shit. I need all the resources I can get, until I can find my way out of here. This stuff is comin' with me," he said, looking back at the creature before heading off, "...I guess you can come if you want. Let's see about finding some fresh food. Or maybe I can cook something on that tail of yours."
PENDING
Re: PENDING
Another big one is his utter irresponsibility in every aspect of his life. Starwind and Hawking is constantly in the financial red, due to Gene's inability to manage finances and frequent spending on things they don't actually need. Without Jim around to take care of him, he'd probably be dead broke. It's literally the child out of the two that has to play the adult, because Gene is too much of a dunderhead to rein himself in. He fights carelessly and frequently has to get bailed out of the local jail, drinks like a fish, and makes a lot of trips to the red light district with vital funds. From the moment Gene gets money in his pocket, it's just a count-down to him having none.
His constant urge to prove himself causes him to make rash, nearly suicidal decisions, under the belief that his own luck will get them through. The fact that his last minute plans usually work can often be attributed to nothing more than the fact that Gene's the main character. Anyone else wouldn't have survived the same odds. He's driven to take long shots and dangerous missions, thinking more of the pay-off than the consequences. Cache of Dragonite at the bottom of a dangerous water planet with giant monsters? He's in. Go to a forbidden area of space, with a legion of Pirates and who-knows-what in your way for something that may or may not be there? Sure. Duel a legendary, unbeatable assassin? Might as well do it sooner than later. Outnumbered? Hell, go through anyway. He's a perfect example of how being hot-blooded isn't always a perfectly heroic trait to have.
Of course, that's not to say he's nothing BUT flaws. Gene's got his good traits.
Though Gene is willing to kill in order to protect himself, he'd prefer to handle things at a moderate level. He knows how to show restraint in a confrontation, and isn't quick to brandish lethal force unless his opponent is. Seeing people he loves die in front of him is a fear that stems all the way back to his childhood, and watching his father get killed as Gene was jettisoned to safety. Nobody, and I mean nobody is ever going to hurt people Gene loves if he can stop it. This also extends to innocent bystanders, especially if they're young women.
Gene is also one of those adults who never lost his ability to really dream. No matter how low class he may be, or how low on the socio-economic ladder Starwind and Hawking hovers, he continues to dream and strive for something better. He wants the Outlaw Star to be famous in the galaxy, and damned if he'll let anyone or anything get in the way of that dream.
He also never leaves a man behind. Gene doesn't believe in abandoning an ally or someone he owes a debt to. He sticks to them and helps them through whatever trouble surrounding them. When he was arrested by the Federation Police and incarcerated, and Pirates attacked the colony, Gene could have taken his friends and run. Instead he chose to fight, helping drive off the invaders and bolster the remaining officers. When it was over, he simply left with a careless grin and a smart-ass remark. The one time he abandoned Suzuka, it was at her own request. She told Gene several times to leave her behind, so he could reach Melfina. Even as he finally left, it was clear that he didn't like not being there to back her up. Gene knows what loyalty is.
Physically, Gene's alright. He's in great shape, knows how to brawl with the best of them, and knows his weapons. He's more of a "jack-of-all trades, master of none" type of guy. He's good with a gun, but not a marksman. He knows how to fight, but he gets his clock cleaned by enemies who are real experts.
