One way to describe Edward is stubborn. Despite what people may say if he has his mind set on something then he’s going to find a way to make it happen, which is what drives him forward through most of his life. Sometimes his stubbornness gets him into trouble but Ed tends to sticks to his guns and only giving in to certain things. He’s very goal-oriented as well, focusing on returning his brother to his body in some way or another. Yet Ed doesn’t seem as determined to get his own body back to normal but he agrees with Al whenever it comes up. While Ed is willing to do almost anything to make things right, he’s not willing to sacrifice people in order to achieve it. His goals aren’t the only thing he’s stubborn with as Ed is the sort of person to believe in something and stick to it, even if it means he gets hurt in the process. And while there are times where it can blind him to other things it doesn’t completely rule his life, a lesson he learned the hard way.
To go with his stubbornness is his strong will that can often push him through situations where it seems things are hopeless. While he does have his moments of depression Ed can bounce back fairly quickly, sometimes with a push from someone else. He just needs a reminder of his goals and that he can’t just give up. Ed has his beliefs and while sometimes the truth of something is horrible he can’t just go along with it. There’s clearly a line in the sand that he himself can’t cross and he hates to see other people crossing it too. On top of all of that Ed is very determined and driven by his goals. This combination of traits usually pays off for him such as getting an alchemy teacher, recovering from automail surgery in a year instead of three, becoming a State Alchemist. Once his mind is set on something Ed has a hard time letting it go, though he’s learned that some things just aren’t possible.
Edward has a pretty big ego that’s often well backed-up by his skills and knowledge. Sometimes it does get the better of him and results in more trouble then he expected but most of the time Ed does come out on top. It’s really bad when faced with opponents of any kind or Colonel Mustang. His ego often leads to him being cocky and again, while he has the skill and knowledge to go with it, it often makes people angry and want to strike out at him. Ed really doesn’t have any issues being cocky when he should be serious and often finds enjoyment with some battles, whether they be verbal or physical.
It doesn’t help that he can be petty at times, often being offended at the smallest of things when others would just let them roll off of them. No other subject is as touchy as his height is. Someone can make a remark about being small or even just mention a word that could be taken as a short joke (if one is looking for them) and he can go into a rampage. Usually this is accompanied by a need for physical violence and over-exaggerating what was said which often results with Ed needing to be restrained by his little brother. In fact most of time Ed tends to deal with his conflicts with acts of violence or outrage, it doesn’t matter who it might be. It doesn’t help at all that Edward has a very short temper and is quick to anger. Whether it is his short complex or dealing with serious matters, Ed’s temper often gets him in trouble.
To make matters worse Ed has a tendency to be reckless which ends up with him being seriously injured or breaking his automail. Thankfully his determination, strong will and stubbornness often mean that he doesn’t run away from a fight but he also won’t let himself die either. Most of his fights usually result in a lot of damage to surrounding buildings and he doesn’t tend to think about it until after the battle is done and he has an angry mob after him. Ed is also the sort to leap before he looks, to jump in feet first without planning first which can cause him to panic a little but his quick thinking saves him in the end.
While enemies get the violent approach other people get a different sort of treatment. His way of solving situations can be attributed to the fact that Ed can be abrasive and rough. Ed doesn’t tend to sugar-coat the truth for people, not even when they’re hurting emotionally and could do with some comfort. Life sucks but if they can stand up on their own two legs then they should keep moving forward. It’s a form of encouragement – Ed’s version of encouragement actually. Sometimes it can be called sympathy with a harsh twist as it usually gets people to move forward and continue on with their lives. Really he’s just not that good at dealing with giving people comfort, though he tries a little harder to be nicer to those he’s formed close bonds with. That’s when Ed shows his real compassion for people. He also shows kindness towards most children in his own way by making it seem like it was his idea to spend time with them.
Due to the brothers’ failure to bring their mother back to life and the consequences of the rebound Ed’s grown to be a sarcastic cynic. He happily and bluntly relieves people of their delusions of god, reality and their self-importance. While he himself is an agnostic and often makes comments about god he neither believes or disbelieves if god is real or not, he simply sees the (sometimes harsh) truth that’s laid out in front of him. If anything Ed sees the world through alchemy, Equivalent Exchange is everywhere just like the lesson he learned from his teacher – one is all, all is one. They are all a small speck in the grand scheme of it all, them being the one, and when he dies he’ll become part of the all.
Sometimes Ed has an issue with authority figures, namely Mustang who Ed has a tendency to harass any chance he can get. While he can be respectful if he wants or needs to, he generally tends to treat everyone more like some sort of friend than someone with a higher or even lower rank than him. He doesn’t hesitate to poke fun at people or being brutally honest with them, though Ed does know when to hold his tongue most of the time. Sometimes he can even be a bit vindictive and can rub people’s failures in their face or give someone an ironic sense of justice. Ed has discovered that there are dark, sinister shadows lurking within the military so he’s become very cautious of whom he trusts and who he doesn’t. Yet once someone has gained Ed’s trust he tends to stick with them like a loyal dog. However there are, of course, some people that he would trust far more than others and some he trusts begrudgingly as there’s some sort of conflict between them.
Edward is very energetic most of the time. He doesn’t like to sit still unless he has something to do such as research. It means that Ed loves to travel and is very impatient. Things often have to be done on his schedule or he feels as if he’ll die from boredom. However, there are times when he can be very stationary for long periods of time besides just studying, though not in the sense of being physically still and more sticking in one place for long periods of time. As long as there’s something to keep his attention, Ed can usually find some kind of busy work. Sitting still just isn’t really his thing for the most part unless there’s a book in front of his face. He also despises milk in any and all forms, except in stew and claims it to be something like a life-time enemy of his.
Because of their mother’s death and father’s disappearance, Ed has some parental issues. While he loves, adores and even tried to bring back their mother, he has a lot of anger towards their old man. He blames Hohenheim for their mother’s death as their father had left them and shuns his father’s attention. Ever since their failed attempt at human transmutation Ed had carried around both his sins and his guilt, too afraid to express the latter, especially towards his brother who has to live a shell of a life thanks to their dabbling with forbidden arts. While he may not freely talk about what they did or the full consequences of their actions, Ed literally lugs around his sins in the form of automail. However it’s the other situations that tend to be the heavier burden such as when they discovered the fact that the Philosopher’s Stone was made by sacrificing humans. There are times when Ed questions if all of this is a form of punishment for committing an alchemy taboo.
