Wheatley | Portal 2 | Was Reserved

Personal Journal:

Plurk: beanie_plant
Timezone: EST
Current Characters in Route: Kevin
Character
Name: Wheatley
Series: Portal 2
Timeline: End game
Canon Resource Links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheatley_%28Portal%29
Personality: Wheatley’s personality stems from the fact that he is a AI core that was designed to be a fast-talking moron. In fact his whole purpose is to create a constant stream of terrible ideas in order to clog the processing thought process of Glados. As a result Wheatley lacks the intelligence to produce cognitive thought and productive thinking patterns that would enable him to make a productive idea. Wheatley has a nasty trait of going on an on about one topic and even lying his butt off in order to back track and cover his tracks, causing him to ramble on. Due to his stupidity he frequently slips up and insults humans in front of Chell. This causes him to continue on and on, almost soliloquy like about how humans are great, intelligent beings, filled with a rich and colorful culture and a history that is unique to them. It is in his character to show remorse, and he has awareness, after the act, that he is a bumbling moron. However it is unlikely he can learn form his mistakes, due to his nature.
Funny, high-strung and a bit of a motor mouth are the words people would use to describe Wheatley. Essentially a lot of things he says and does are not a result of careful thought and logical planning. Often appearing impulsive and coming up with good ideas that seem good at the time, but end horribly. Not something one would expect from an Artificial Intelligence.
Cheerful and always willing to help others in order to help himself. His bond with Chell is solely built off of that if she helps him then they both can escape from the labs below. Wheatley acts kind, appearing to be the ‘woe is me’ type, and often accusing others of being bossy and setting up his ‘orders’ as mere requests. He talks people into doing his bidding, without ever making them. He is manipulative in a way that is difficult to classify as intentional or simply accidental, a desire of wanting something but not having the attention span for a real plan. Of course we see his true selfish desire take form when he is placed in Glados body. It amplifies his incompetence ten fold and he decides to act on his own accord for the rest of the game.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Quick Thinker - Wheatley has the ability to quickly come up with a plan or even an escape route. Throughout canon he has ideas that move the plot along. Of course those ideas often do more bad then good and it is through your (player) influence that his ideas benefit the overall goal.
+ Cheerful/Welcoming - This robot has a warm voice and a willingness to make friends. He has no desire to be alone and enjoys the company of others. In order to get what he wants he has an ability to plead with others and without outright forcing them, getting what he wants. He is the first character you meet in the game and his personality is so easy to trust!
+ / - Manipulative - Wheatley has the ability to cheerfully and without suspicion get what he wants. Not that he has any malicious intent with this ability, but he is a selfish robot and knows how to get what he wants.
- Unintelligent - Wheatley is dumb. He is a moron and was designed to be one. Every idea, thought or even speech has no thought process. His ideas are destructive since this is what he is designed to do and he has no idea that this is the way.
- Short Temper/Impulsive - These two go hand in hand because they react off one another. When he is called a moron, he destroys his only escape route due to his anger and loses the one person he could have used to achieve his goals. Speaking of moron, he hates being called that! It is sure to get a rise out of him and an impulsive, later to be regretted, action is sure to follow.
+ Fearful - Wheatley is terrified of most things he has no control over. He fears loss, he fears Glados, birds and failure. However when he is in a position of power/control most of these fears and inhibitions disappear.

Re: Wheatley | Portal 2 | Was Reserved
First Person Sample: [The feed comes on, but of course…it doesn’t appear to be intentional. A pink paw comes onto the screen, tapping it rather slowly. A voice is heard.]
Hey, hye, you knock it off! Whatever…you are…. What even are you mate…come on? What kind of get up is that, being pink and slow….
[He sighs and moves to pick up the Gear, but struggles a bit as he tries to grasp the device. He continually picks it up for a few moments before he drops it again.]
Oh shit! Snap! Stupid human fingers! Who’s bloody idea was to turn me into a human. Magic doesn’t exist and I sure aren’t in Apeture Labs…. Darn it! Come on!
[With much struggle he finally succeeds and stares back at the camera for a while before turning to look at his slowpoke]
No. Don’t think that way, here you are calling me names when you can’t even do a damn thing yourself.
And just to get something straight. I’m not a moron and I know you weren’t just thinking it, because wouldn’t that be calling the kettle black. Not that I am the kettle…or a black kettle or a pot. Right! The pot calling the kettle black! That is not happening right now.
[Plop and the Gear falls from his fingers again.]
Damn! Stupid humans! Stupid human fingers! What is going on!
[A pause.]
No! I don’t need you to comment on that! [Wait was he actually talking to the pokemon. Thinking that it would respond? Odd.]
Third Person Sample: Ouch! He tripped again and again and yep AGAIN! Man he hated this and again what was going on! No one seemed to know and it caused him nothing but frustrations.
Here he was in some foreign land and forced to inhabit a human body. He bumbled around the house, his ‘mother’ calling out sounds of concern as he tripped over his own feet. “I’m fine…mother?” Mother…okay no. “Can you tell me what’s going on here or are you going to respond with some answer that we both know I’m not going to be able to use. Maybe I’ll understand it, I can hope!” He calls from the other room, waiting for some sort of response.
“Have a good journey honey!” she calls back and he just shakes his head. “No! Okay well thank you for the response, but what journey and OW!” he falls again. Man being a human was rough, how did Chell do it? How did any smelly human do it? It certainly was a step down was super smart and over powered AI, but after what he did with his power he guessed this was a fitting punishment. At least he was no longer bopping around in space with that…other core. Funny, how he could find himself missing space core in his current situation.
After a while he makes it out the door, with the pink blob of a pokemon following closely behind him. Wheatley stops and looks back at the monster. He isn’t quite sure what to think of it, it’s not threatening and not to be feared is his conclusion. It seems just as confused as he is and while it has mastered the art of being whatever it is…he still have a bit of a ways to go.

Revisions
Chell seems to affect him the most. He seems eager to help and please, and his discriminatory take on humans turns a little more patronizing, with strange sympathy towards her ‘brain damage’ and helping her escape Glados. He’s also, however, quick to turn on her when he’s installed in Glados’ body. Granted, some of this is affected by the paranoia that Glados’ programming gives him. But it’s also just as affected by a gnawing awareness that people look down on him, and going mad with the power to do something about it. Like slamming them forcefully into an elevator shaft.
Glados affects him in the way of fear. He always feared her, especially so when his first encounter with her in the game ends in him being squashed like a bug and cast aside. Glados’ nasty habit of getting under people’s skin turns on her when she does it too well, manipulating not only Wheatley’s fear of her, but also of his fear of being seen as less than.
This is one thing he is aware of - inferiority. He knows at least that he has a place below most others, though he may not understand why he’s deserving. He prefers underhanded techniques that get him what he wants in the end. Being direct gets him in trouble, especially when the place is run by a domineering maniace. When he’s given the chance to do the same, though, he takes full advantage. The only problem is that, well, he’s still an idiot. That’s not changed. the only thing different is his confidence levels. He’s given the power to actually FULFILL all these stupid, selfish desires.
And they are selfish. He doesn’t want to be bound to taking care of stupid humans. He doesn’t want the other bots to tell him what to do, which way to go, or how to properly run his job, even if they do know how to better than him. When he’s given power, his bad decisions may seem justified by his bad programming, but he’s also fully aware that their results aren’t okay. But he cares more that he gets what he wants. In the end, it’s INCREDIBLY obvious that he was aware that what he wasn’t doing was okay, when he claims that if he could go back, he’d apologize to Chell. But it’s important to note that he only has the presence of mind to express regret only after it stops being beneficial to him.
