Applications will be normally checked during the weekend following the first and third Sunday of each month unless otherwise stated, and we will allow one application per person during one application cycle. Remember, the most characters one player can have at a time is currently set at five.
Applications received after 11:59 PM EST on Saturday of the first and third weekend of each month will be checked the following app weekend unless otherwise stated.
The comment character limit on dreamwidth is 16,000 characters so apps no longer need to be split into multiple comments; however this is at players' discretion.
Please use the form below and post your application in comments rather than linking if you can. If you have any questions, feel free to ask either of the mods. You can reach us through emails, IMs, or PMs.
A reminder for those waiting to hear back, please don't be worried if we skip yours while going through them. It only means we needed a little more time to research!
Helpful links!

Varric is about as far from a typical fantasy dwarf as you can get. While he loves nothing more than to sit around drinking and playing cards with his friends, that's about where the similarities end. Unlike most dwarves, Varric hates caves, camping, being outside, slopes greater than 10 degrees, and most weather conditions. He may look hardy and capable, but he spends most of his breath complaining about being dragged out into the wilderness. The other thing that he spends a lot of breath on is talking himself up. Not only does he take any praise and compliment with a smug sense of pride, but he also talks brags about himself (and his crossbow). However, for somebody who loves the sound of his own voice as much as Varric does, what he prides himself on most isn't his own accomplishments but those of his friends. He wrote an entire book about the crew that he hung out with in Kirkwall, one that centered around his best friend and in which he gladly takes on the role of humble narrator/plucky dwarf sidekick in the shadow of Hawke's glory.
Varric is many things: boastful, loyal, generous, faithful, roguishly handsome. But even all those things aside, he is genuinely charming. The kind of charming that wiggles under your defenses with snarky one-liners and good humor, no matter how high your defenses are. While he's most at home in a tavern, regaling the patrons with farfetched (and probably exaggerated) stories of derring-do, anyplace where he's around people is where he shines the most. This is mostly because if there's one thing that Varric excels at, it's witty one-liners. A lot of the funniest lines in the games and the comics go to him, his silver tongue as quick as his feet are. He has a very casual, approachable attitude, one that's reflected in his writing style as well.
Of course, Varric's fiction-writing doesn't just stop on the page. One of his most reliable traits is that he is an S-class bullshitter, who can talk his way out of almost anything and tell just about any lie with a straight face. The fact that he lies to a religious authority known as a Seeker of Truth and gets away with it for at least a year before he blows his own story is testament to just how good of a liar he is. He even lies to himself from time to time, although he is entirely aware that he's doing it, and admits that he tells himself what he needs to hear in order to be able to keep going. Varric Tethras is a storyteller. It's how he makes his living, and it's what he does for fun. He's made a comfortable fortune off of publishing his writing, and his bestselling serial, Hard in Hightown, is popular enough to get a couple of unauthorized sequels penned by hack writers. However, more than that, he's also that guy in the bar with the loud voice and no end of stories to tell about people he knows and things he's seen. He's dabbled in every genre from romance to biography to noir-style crime novels.
While his characters are usually inspired by people he knows (sometimes to the point of barely changing the names), every story except Tale of the Champion has a veil of "All characters in this work are completely fictional" pulled over it. Despite his penchant for tragedy and his love of tragic heroes (to the point where he tells the protagonist of Inquisition from the get go: "I've written enough tragedy to know where this is going"), there's still a part of Varric that dares to hope that maybe this story will have a happy ending. It's this same part of him that makes him Andrastian, simply because he finds something beautiful about the idea that you can save the world with a song.
One of Varric's shining traits is his loyalty. While he puts on a big act of bravado and indifference, when push comes to shove he'll be right there at their side because if he cares about you, he's not going to let you face hell alone. Varric is very much the dad friend of his group, making sure that everybody is taken care of and trying to reach out when Something Happens to somebody. This is a trait that he definitely amps up to 11 after Dragon Age 2, because no matter what he tells himself he still feels like he could or should have tried harder or done something, and maybe The Thing wouldn't have happened. At the core of Varric's paternal nature is the fact that he just cares. So much. He cares so much about his friends and, hell, about people he barely knows. The stereotype of dwarves in fantasy literature is that they live underground and hoard riches. And while Varric definitely doesn't hurt for money, he's also not afraid to part with it. Whether it's calling in favors and throwing money to keep his friends out of trouble, or donating generously to help rebuild his ruined hometown, Varric doesn't care much about his personal wealth except for using it to help others.
First-Person Sample:
-right, here, I think I got it. Is this thing on?
[The cam is a little shaky at first, but it levels out as much as "selfie-vision" can. The man on the other side of the screen glances offscreen in mild concern, then back at the camera with a bemused expression.]
Great. Listen. I've seen some shit. I've fought dragons, demons, giant spiders, ancient evil magisters bent on destroying the world - that one twice, by the way - but this?
[Camera pans over to a not-so-little guy who looks like he's just happy to be there. His wings buzz in delight and he gives a chirpy "Yan!"]
What the shit is this? Now, giant spiders? Sure. Giant birds? Probably, yeah, I can see that. Dragons? Absolutely.
[He turns the camera back around and gives it a serious look.]
I've seen dragonflies. I've never seen giant dragonflies. This thing's almost as big as I am! And, more importantly, how do I make it stop following me?
[Another offscreen "Yan!"]
Oh, and one more question: Should I expect this giant dragonfly to breathe fire like a real dragon? Or ice, or lightning, or something. I just want to be prepared before I wake up one morning with my coat on fire. I like this coat. We've been through a lot together. Thanks.
