APPLICATIONS!
Currently: Closed!
Route 29 has closed as of May 30th. For the continuation of the game, please visit [community profile] victory_road!

Applications will be normally checked during the weekend following the first and third Sunday of each month unless otherwise stated, and we will allow one application per person during one application cycle. Remember, the most characters one player can have at a time is currently set at five.

Applications received after 11:59 PM EST on Saturday of the first and third weekend of each month will be checked the following app weekend unless otherwise stated.

We now ask that potential applicants post their application in comments rather than linking. If their application contains explicit references to 'hard' spoilers (character death, unforeseen plot twists, big reveals, he was evil all along etc), players should put the application in their own journal or their character's journal and link it, making sure to mention the presence of spoilers within. For further clarification on our spoilers policy and whether or not your application needs to be linked, please check this page. Thank you for your cooperation!

The comment character limit on dreamwidth is 16,000 characters so apps no longer need to be split into multiple comments; however this is at players' discretion.

Please use the form below and post your application in comments rather than linking if you can. If you have any questions, feel free to ask either of the mods. You can reach us through emails, IMs, or PMs.

A reminder for those waiting to hear back, please don't be worried if we skip yours while going through them. It only means we needed a little more time to research!

monge: (🍦|| Get out of here chucklefuck)

[personal profile] monge 2015-12-04 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality:
Komasan has two claims to fame, which easily point out the key factors of his personality: He adds the word "zura" at the end of almost all of his sentences, and he exclaims "monge" whenever he's excited. Get used to these words if you want to interact with him, you are going to hear them a lot.

Zura is apparently Komasan's way of saying "nice to meet you." He's polite and courteous and usually tries to display good manners. Keyword try, rule of funny dictates he may do something rude every now and then, but as far as youkai go, he's a saint. Generally kind and sweet, Komasan is one of the few youkai who lives a somewhat human life and tries his best to follow their rules. For example, all youkai are invisible to most people, and yet Komasan will still put on a human disguise and pay for a ticket to a museum even though he doesn't actually have to. Even gets jobs so he has money to pay with. He loves making friends and he loves helping said friends, even if it means he might have to give something up in return. For example, when he wanted to help the manga artist by proving youkai exist, he knew very well it'd ruin any chances of a relationship with her if he exposed himself. Komasan is surprisingly selfless and tends to put people before himself, even if it means risking having people abuse his kindness. And it does happen, a lot. Although it doesn't seem like Komasan actually notices that it's happening, and is simply happy when everyone else is happy.

Monge is Komasan's other catchphrase, a slang word for tremendous (although it's sometimes translated as "amaze.") Seeing as Komasan is a 300+ year old komainu who has been guarding a shrine his whole life, everything is very, very new to him and it excites him a great deal. He's easily impressed, even by the simplest things, so he tends to overreact. Escalators, revolving doors, glass floors, seriously just about anything will make his day. It's this naivete and wonderment that leads to him having somewhat of a childlike personality.

But of course with a childlike personality comes the childlike flaws. Komasan is easily distracted when people try to explain things to him, at least in great detail. He's prone to wandering off or napping if something isn't interesting enough. He's very much a visual sort of guy. Nature, electronics, anything, if he can see it, then he'll love it. Someone explaining something cool? He'll lose interest if they go on for too long. He's also prone to crying whenever he's scared, which happens a lot. As amazing as a lot of new things are, there are also a lot of new things that are terrifying. The world has changed, after all, you try keeping your cool trying to catch up. Confrontations with scary people will also cause him to tear up. If it's very obvious he's being bullied, he normally won't fight back. It's because of this Komasan may sometimes come off as a coward.

Another key thing about Komasan is that he's a very proud country boy. Most people can tell right away, he speaks with an Okayama dialect and all, and he's often called a bumpkin or a hillbilly. Komasan doesn't seem to mind these names, however, and is very proud of where he comes from. In fact, one of the few times where he did stand up to bullies was because he was defending both country living and his brother, Komajiro.

Komajiro is a name you might hear a lot, and that's because Komasan loves his little brother a great deal. Heck, his own family in general, he's often writing his mother in the beginning of episodes. Komasan suffers from a terrible big brother complex, desperately trying to come off as a cool despite the fact that he's kind of lackluster. When Komajiro finds him in the city and begs him to show him around, Komasan can't say no despite not knowing anything. As such, he ends up digging himself into a hole every time he tries to show his brother the wonders of the city, making shit up in hopes to impress the younger komainu. To his horror, his brother ends up taking to the city a lot faster than he does. As the series progresses, Komajiro seems to catch on that his brother isn't exactly a pro with these things, but still respects him a great deal and tends to just let him get excited over stupid shit. Komasan, in turn, learns to not pull that stunt again. It shows later in the series when their mother writes them back, saying she wants to visit the city with her boys. To make sure he doesn't screw up and that their mother has a great time, Komasan actually goes out of his way to visit all the places she's interested in so he can be a good guide.

It should be noted, however, that even though Komasan loves his family a ton, even lives in the same house as his brother, he isn't dependent on them. Despite his childlike personality, he's incredibly self sufficient. In fact, Komasan didn't even bother to tell Komajiro he was going to the city, he did that all on his own. It was Komajiro who found him. Basically what I'm trying to say is that even though Komasan is big on family, it won't wreck him if he's thrown into a game without them and function perfectly fine.

Despite being somewhat of a main character, Komasan's interactions with the other main cast are few and far between. Most of the episodes he's in deal with his adventures with Komajiro. He gave his youkai medal to Keita in his first appearance, which is the ultimate proof of befriending a youkai, and it is shown that the two still hang out from time to time. Komasan apparently likes to watch him play soccer. And when Komasan needed help showing director Yarase an actual youkai, he went to Keita to summon one. So it can be gathered that the two are still good friends despite never seeing them do much onscreen together. Komasan also seems to like Whisper, one of Keita's youkai partners, if only because he vaguely looks like ice cream. He's often seen nibbling on his head, an action Whisper weirdly finds pleasing.

Speaking of ice cream, it's Komasan's ultimate weakness. He explains many times that he's longed for the treat while guarding his shrine, and it's the driving force that brings him to the city after his shrine's destroyed. Once ice cream enters the picture, that's where Komasan's attention is, end of story. Manners are history, he will go as far as to lick someone else's cone if it means he can get a taste of the treasured treat. It's the only thing he's ever abused his youkai invisibility on, in fact it's how he's introduced in the series. Over 80 episodes have gone by from the point I'm taking him from, and despite all the things he's learned, this is the one thing that hasn't changed because he gets caught doing it again.

It should also be noted that when ice cream isn't involved, Komasan is actually a really hard worker. When he gets a job as a janitor at a toy company, he dedicates himself to making the place as clean as he possibly can. He continues to do so even after he gets promoted to toy planner, and can't seem to be talked out of it when staff nervously try to tell him he doesn't have to do that anymore. He also somehow manages to successfully run that same company when he finds himself promoted to president, even if it is for a short time. Basically, if he sets himself up to a task, and provided he doesn't find it boring, you can bet Komasan will put his best effort into it.

That's about it, Youkai Watch is a very simple series, so Komasan doesn't go through the sort of development you might find in a more plot oriented series. The little guy does try his hardest, however, and attempts to adapt to the changes he does come across with a positive outlook. He's sweet and friendly and just wants to eat some ice cream while he marvels over the magic that is a television or whatever electronic device he finds that day. Just try to get used to the constant shouting.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

+Friendly: Like every good adorable anime character, Komasan is kind and loves to meet people. This actually says a lot considering most youkai are usually using their powers to prank people, whereas Komasan lives among them. There isn't a mean bone in his body.
+Hard worker: If Komasan gives himself a task, he'll usually see it through to the end and not half ass anything. Case in point, when he was a janitor at a toy company and got promoted as a planner, he still mopped the floors despite the staff trying to tell him he didn't have to anymore. He made those floors sparkle.
+Good learner: It's true that Komasan starts off a little slow, but unlike most, um, less intelligent characters, once Komasan learns something, it stays with him. Best example being smartphones. In the beginning, he legit thought radio waves had to do with the ocean. Later in the series he could use Komajiro's smartphone like a pro and can take selfies like a champ.
+Skillful: Somehow Komasan has a lot of talent, mostly because it's hilarious. He can cook and loves to do so at inappropriate times, and can sculpt at absurd levels. He can probably do more, it just depends on how funny it'd be.
+Lucky: Every bit of good fortune Komasan has stems from his incredible luck. Make a random comment? Get promoted. Start dancing for no reason? It's the new dance craze. Guy known for being a hardass? Look like his favorite stuffed animal and get away with everything.

-Ignorant: Komasan is very much a country bumpkin who's been out of the loop for over 300 years. Modern day tech is still something he's trying to learn and it's guaranteed he will have at least some sort of misunderstanding when he sees something new. He still thinks roombas are a type of animal because no one bothered to correct him. This is what we're dealing with.
-Easily Distracted: If someone is explaining something to him in great detail, then chances are he's going to get bored and look at something else. Like a bug. Or his feet. If you want to explain anything to Komasan, it's best to do it in quick, short segments...or else he's not going to care.
-Doormat: Far too polite for his own good, Komasan has a very hard time saying no. Things like people cutting in front of him in line or getting stuck in a storm of upsales. He's also incredibly gullible, the whole "WHAT'S THAT IN THE SKY" trick seriously works on him. He has no reason to doubt anyone and he has no reason to believe anyone would abuse his kindness. So it happens. A lot.
-Crybaby: Komasan has a very childlike personality despite his age, so when he's frustrated or scared, he will cry. There's no stopping it.
-Ice Cream: Ice cream is Komasan's downfall. All those positive traits I just listed are thrown out the window once he sees there's ice cream around, specifically soft serve ice cream. At best he will stare at whoever has it and beg like, well, a dog. At worst he will outright steal licks or even eat the whole thing if he thinks he can get away with it.
