Rough timeline of Emil's life.
Personality:
Even though he's well over 1,000 years old, Emil is still very much a kid in both mind and body. Events hit him fast and hard, getting an instinctual, emotional response. When things go wrong, he yells, he cries, he isn't prepared, and he reacts to the happy times in equal measure. Emil is often voicing his opinions, commenting on the game's sidequests or calling the other party members out on their own, more guarded ways, which often earns him praise for being thoughtful, optimistic, etc. He takes these praises eagerly, using them to boost his failing self-image. However, there are also times that the boy reveals a more mature side of himself, one not so openly whimsical. He may not remember all his time spent alive, referring back to "when [he] was young" when such a thing spanned from age ~10 to ~1,345 apparently, but he doesn't really consider his life when he compares his needs to that of his friends'. Others are far more important to him, even to the point where, though he is scared and very much does not want to die, he sacrifices himself for his friends' sakes and ignores their cries of protest. He offers this at multiple points in the game, but it isn't until the end, when he's grown in his relationship with the party, they've nearly reached their goal, and he's accepted himself that he does more than voice his intent.
A part of his willingness to put others first comes from his own negative view of himself. This slowly gets better throughout his time spent with Nier, Kainé, and Weiss, but Emil has spent far longer hating himself for the horrible things he'd done because he couldn't control his abilities. Unintentionally, Emil has brought many lives to their ends. There aren't many times we get to hear him actually voice his regret, but his reluctance to leave his mansion that separates him from the rest of the world and the way he tries to turn away help in regards to curing his cursed eyes because it could cause trouble for others are indicators to the boy's view of himself as one who doesn't deserve to belong with others. When his body changes into his skeleton-like weapon form, he tries to hide himself from view because he's more visibly ugly and he doesn't want his only friends to leave him. Later, when turned away from Nier's village, he pretends to not be bothered, assuring Nier that it's naturally for people to be afraid of him. However, when on the verge of losing one from his support network, he begs Kainé to stay by him because it's only because of her that he can be strong and forget his monstrous appearance. He relies heavily on those around him for encouragement, and sees their deeds as much greater than his own. In the end, he's still disgusted by what he looks like, but the journey he's gone on with his friends has been enough that he's proud of who he is, no matter what that person looks like, because now he had the power to do something other than destroy.
While building others up in his mind is something he spends a lot of time on, Emil isn't blind to faults. He'll often make note of what others say, repeating them or commenting on them in a teasing manner to try and ease the situation back to one that isn't so stressful. Compared to his friends, he really is The Mellow Companion that the game's trophy suggests, going along and calming everyone else down with his presence while he continues being his cheery self.
Emil puts a lot of effort into his optimism when the times seem bleak, but in more casual conversation he still finds it more natural to look on the bright side. Even the times when he's doubting a happy outcome, he'll voice a hope for one anyway, putting faith into the fact that things will eventually turn out fine as long as they keep trying. This trust doesn't only extend to fate, as immediately after meeting Nier and Weiss he hands over the key to all the doors of his manor when they reject his offer to guide them. It's noted in one of the side stories that Emil had always been that way, going along with the researchers at the lab despite the facility clearly not being an orphanage as he and his sister were told.
Much of Emil's raising was left to a researcher who worked at the lab where Emil was turned into a weapon. Because of this, his social skills are a bit lacking and he doesn't have a ton of familiarity with the world outside his manor. There are a few subjects he's better with than others, given the nature of his education and the types of materials available to him, but he tends to prefer arts over science even with his strengths. Piano is particular interests him, and he doesn't seem to spend much time on writing and languages. Perhaps due to his young age at the time, Emil adapted quickly to Japanese but forgot the majority of his first language. Even though he's lived for so long, his mentality is still, for the most part, that of a young boy's, which makes him impressionable and probably lends to his ability to pick up on concepts quickly. However, this also (along with the number of years between events, of course) can cause him to not latch onto details or forget things.
While Emil often looks up to Nier, concerning himself with how cool and manly the other male is and looking into the type of person Nier would like, the one he actually grows closest to is Kainé, and not only because she reminds him of his sister. He adopts her in as part of his family and it's often her words that he uses to build himself up, likewise trying hard to keep her going when her strength falters. She's the one who teaches Emil to not give up, and though he was already the sort to look on the brighter side of things, it's after this point that his dialogue is more optimistic and less self-deprecating. This isn't to say that he thinks less of the others -- it's very clear that, despite the short time he's known them, Emil comes to think of the four of them as a unit and becomes distraught at the thought of them being pulled apart by outside forces.

This place has a lot of exciting legends huh?
[A picture is posted to the network shortly after, an open storybook next to a boy's leg and a pile of similar books. It's a bit out of focus, but the illustration is clear enough that Gengar's figure stalking along behind a Clefairy can be made out.]
There were a lot of books back where I lived, but I was never able to read them all. And there are even more here! Are there libraries like this in every town? How many of these legends are from historical events? It's a lot to think about.
I'd love to be able to take some of the books back with me, when we find a way home. I could show Nier and Kainé! Even Weiss! I guess I have to work hard to remember what I can, just in case.
Third Person Sample:
It was strange, waking up under covers. He'd had a bed when staying with the King of Façade, but the sheer anticipation for the wedding had made it so Emil hadn't really used it. He muses for a sleepy second on how quickly he'd gotten used to sleeping outside with Kainé there to make it better, but as he turns over to smush his face into the soft, almost foreign-feeling pillow, his thoughts instead skip over to how his neck feels somehow...stiffer, how there's something brushing along his face, how material seems to be clinging to him rather than flowing freely. He wants to stay as he is, buried into the mattress until one of his companions fetches for him, but a nagging dread opens his eyes to what he'd suspected was the issue.
"But... Why?!" he exclaims, sitting up and staring at the skin where ugly bone and empty space should be. They were familiar --'know it like the back of your hand' had become a phrase for a reason, after all -- and something he'd wished to see again for what seemed like forever. Still, no matter how he'd hated what had become of his body, being as he was was just wrong. "How could this have happened..."
The sound of someone making their way up the steps gets Emil's heart hammering even harder and he rushes to tear at the sheets. If he'd lost his sister's form, there was no telling what else he'd lost, and if he no longer had a firmer grasp on magic... Finally the cloth rips in his shaking hands and he barely manages to get a strip sufficiently covering his eyes before the door to the room opens. It wasn't Kainé -- he didn't need the lack of heels clicking against the floor to tell that the woman's probable build was off from that of his friend's -- but it wasn't a Shade either. Had her tone not been so warm, Emil might have been more on guard. As it was, the room was too much that of a home and her words brought back a sense of...motherhood. "Emil, honey, it's time for you to go! Oh, you've grown up so fast..."
He couldn't remember the last time someone had been so sincere. He'd had those that cared for him, of course, but even then there had been a sense of duty about it. Despite the shock of his body and the unfamiliar setting, Emil can feel his shoulders relaxing, and he only checks the security of his blindfold once more before replying, "Where am I going?"
"On your Pokemon adventure! Today's the day!"
An adventure? He'd already been on one, before waking up in this place... Well, it was an opportunity to find the others, at the very least!
