Personality: To anyone meeting Makoto Tachibana for the first time, the thing that becomes apparent most quickly is his kind, agreeable nature. Despite the fact that he’s pushing six feet, and a very well-built six feet at that, Makoto is an inherently gentle person; the kind of boy who has an innate fondness for cats and would single-handedly feed all the neighbourhood strays if he were given half the chance. He’s shown to get on well with pretty much everyone else in the cast, and doesn't really have a bad word to say about anyone. Being the older brother to a boisterous set of twins has given him a fair amount of patience, and he's the kind of person who would readily offer a smile or a hand to anyone who needed it - he's actually the first one to attempt to reach out to Rin after finding out that his old friend is back from Australia. In fact, you could almost say that he's kind of a Team Mom; he has a nuturing kind of personality, and he's the member of his friendship circle most likely to be found fussing over his friends' behaviour or their well-being, particularly Haru's; a lot of Makoto's life is spent stopping Haru from stripping and jumping into bodies of water in public, bemoaning his best friend's mackerel-rich diet, or making sure that he actually gets out of the bath and to school on time in the mornings.
Of course, the flipside to Makoto's easygoing, gentle personality is that he's also a bit of a wimp. He has trouble making decisions because he'd much rather keep the peace and make as many people happy as possible; in one of the drama CDs where the Iwatobi boys discuss which of their teammates they'd date if they were girls, Makoto dances around giving an answer, saying that he couldn't possibly choose because they all have good points. Put it bluntly, he's wishy-washy, not to mention a giant scaredy-cat. Despite being the largest of the Iwatobi boys by far, Makoto is easily freaked out by things like horror movies, ghost stories, or just generally creepy places, preferring to hide behind Haru until it's all over.
Makoto does have a fear that's a lot more serious than his non-existent tolerance for scary stuff, though; he's been struggling with a debilitating fear of the ocean since he was a small child, and it's something that has even interfered with his swimming in the past. Makoto doesn't like talking about his phobia; partly because he's ashamed of it, but also because he doesn't want to cause trouble for people around him or make his friends worry. In fact, Makoto tends to take this kind of attitude to his problems generally - because he doesn't want to let people down, he's likely to plaster his usual smile on as best as he can and soldier on until he simply can't manage anymore, at which point the problem has probably become a lot more serious. It comes from a good place, but it's undeniably one of Makoto's flaws, and coming to terms with allowing his friends to support him as much as he tries to support them is one of the things he has to deal with during the course of the series.
Still, Makoto's desire not to let people down isn't always a bad thing. His sense of responsibility is what drives him to take on the position of team captain, despite having misgivings over how suitable he'd be for the role, and it's a position that he grows into admirably. He wants to see his team do well, and is genuinely encouraging and supportive, prepared to do things like go out of his way to allow them to hold a group training camp in spite of their low budget. In spite of his wishy-washiness, Makoto does have a surprising amount of inner strength when pushed; he's able to come a long way in getting over his fear of the ocean with the help of his friends, and even Makoto's patience isn't infinite. He'd never get violent with anyone, but he can be firm, and when someone does something that he finds to be completely out of line, he also has no trouble letting them know about it. In the aftermath of Rin and Haru's race at the prefectural swim meet in season 1, it's Makoto who manages to shake Rin up after his win by reminding him that Rin used to find more value in swimming than just winning races. At the end of the day, Makoto is someone who, more than anything else, cares fiercely about his friends. He might be weak-hearted, but he's willing to try and overcome those weaknesses for his friends, and he's ultimately able to draw a great deal of strength from his friendships with others.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths:
• Swimming: Makoto's a strong swimmer, having been swimming since an early age. While backstroke is his specialty and the stroke that he feels most comfortable swimming, he's also fine swimming breaststroke and freestyle.
• Physical fitness: Makoto's an athelete, so thanks to training for swim meets etc and also his sheer physical size, Makoto is ridiculously strong and well-built for a sixteen year old. His endurance could stand to improve some, and he doesn't really put his strength to use outside of swimming, but if he did, you could guarantee he'd be a bit of a force to be reckoned with.
• Super High School Level Team Mom: As previously mentioned, Makoto's gentle and nurturing nature and his love of animals mean that one of his strengths is being able to get along with all kinds of people, as well as being a natural caretaker of both animals and people; he's patient and persistent enough to try and coax the best out of those around him, and while he'll sometimes give people a nudge in a certain direction if he thinks it'll do them some good, he also seems to have an intuitive sense of when he should stop pushing.
Weaknesses:
• Thalassophobia: Makoto has had a deep and abiding fear of the ocean since he was a small child, when an old fisherman who he used to spend time with was killed during a bad storm. After an incident where Haru almost drowned in a river when they were 12, his fear of the ocean, and water in general by extension, got so bad that it even interfered with his swimming for a while. Fortunately, learning to swim backstroke and being able to swim with his friends have made it a lot easier for him to deal, but despite having come on in leaps and bounds, Makoto's fear is very much still present; he's described it as feeling as though there's something below the surface of the water, waiting to drag him down.
• Cooking: For the sake of everything good in this world, do not let this boy cook unless you want to give the food a viking funeral afterwards.
• Scaredy-cat: Makoto really doesn't deal well with with scary or creepy things, freaking out and hiding behind his friends as soon as they appear.
So basically, he's really not going to be able to deal with ghost pokemon.Pokémon Information

[ Makoto's hair is even more of a birds' nest than usual - a few days on the road will do that to you - but he's smiling his usual warm smile when he appears on the feed. ]
Hi, everyone! Ah, my name's Makoto Tachibana, and if anyone's got a minute or two to spare, I'd really appreciate it if you'd answer a quick question for me? [ he laughs sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck as if to say sorry for being such a bother. ] I'm still pretty new to this whole thing, so sorry in advance if it sounds like a bit of a newbie question, but well, here we go.
[ he holds up a pokeball, by way of demonstration. ] See, it's about Nanami - oh, she's my Lapras! - but I was just wondering - she's a sea Pokemon, isn't she? Is it really okay for Pokemon like her to be battling on land...? [ he cups his chin thoughtfully as he speaks. ] I'm probably worrying a little too much, I know, but I can't help being afraid that she'll dry out or something if she spends too much time out of the water, and the Pokedex doesn't seem like it has much to say about it.
[ he shrugs, chuckling a little as his smile returns. ] Well, in any case, even if it's silly, I hope someone with a little more experience at this can help put my mind at ease! We're getting pretty close to Cherrygrove by now, I think, so if nothing else I should be able to let her stretch her flippers down on the beach there.
[ chatty kid, isn't he? this is what happens when you've spent years being the one carrying most of the conversation in a friendship. and also when you're slightly nervous, maybe. ]
Anyway, thank you for your time!
Third Person Sample:
Makoto crouched on the ground, digging around through the backpack he'd been clutching to his chest like a liferaft not five minutes ago. Honestly, he was still finding it really, really hard not to freak out - if this whole thing was really real, and not some kind of really elaborate, vivid dream that was definitely, definitely all the fault of letting himself be talked into marathoning one of Ran's and Ren's favourite Saturday morning cartoons with them, then that meant that he was stuck in this place with no way of getting home, and that - that was something that Makoto kind of really, really didn't want to think about right now. (What about his schoolwork? His friends and family? Wouldn't they be worried sick--?)
So, instead of thinking about that - because he knew that if he did, he'd never stop - he was concentrating on investigating the contents of this bag. He'd heard the word "journey" enough times this morning already to know what he'd like to be inside, since it didn't look like he'd be getting much of a chance to just stay put in... whereever this was.
They really did seem to have thought of everything, he thought in relief as he sorted through the bag, the action of going through the things - he supposed they were his things, really, weren't they? - helping to calm his nerves a bit. Although, I would have liked it a lot better if they'd given me a tent or something, he thought, not relishing the idea of sleeping outdoors in who-knew-what kind of country. By himself. Where there were probably wild animals or something--
Slamming the brakes on that train of thought, he felt a little ashamed of himself for thinking like that. After all, whoever it was that packed this bag, they didn't have to give him all this stuff to begin with, right?
"I guess I should probably try to be grateful..." he muttered to himself as he tugged the book out of the backpack, thumbing through it curiously. A Trainer Handbook, huh? Come to think of it, he had seen some of those weird animals - they were Pokemon, right? - hanging around some of the other people in the town...
He looked, a little dubiously, at the red and white ball lying in his other hand. Well, it was worth a try. Fervently praying that he hadn't got stuck with anything scary - Makoto didn't have a clue how he'd even begin to cope if he had - he gave the pokeball a throw, watching in trepidation for whatever was about to appear out of it.
... Well, he hadn't been expecting a huge, dinosaur-looking thing. As Makoto looked up at it, slack-jawed, it - he? She? How was he supposed to tell? - tilted its head slightly, making a small, musical sound of curiosity.
Makoto lifted his hand weakly, giving a little wave. "Um! Uhh... hi there. I'm Makoto, and I guess I must be your trainer, so... let's both try our best together?"
This was going to be a long, long day.
