Currently: Closed!
Route 29 has closed as of May 30th. For the continuation of the game, please visit [community profile] victory_road!

Applications will be normally checked during the weekend following the first and third Sunday of each month unless otherwise stated, and we will allow one application per person during one application cycle. Remember, the most characters one player can have at a time is currently set at five.

Applications received after 11:59 PM EST on Saturday of the first and third weekend of each month will be checked the following app weekend unless otherwise stated.

We now ask that potential applicants post their application in comments rather than linking. If their application contains explicit references to 'hard' spoilers (character death, unforeseen plot twists, big reveals, he was evil all along etc), players should put the application in their own journal or their character's journal and link it, making sure to mention the presence of spoilers within. For further clarification on our spoilers policy and whether or not your application needs to be linked, please check this page. Thank you for your cooperation!

The comment character limit on dreamwidth is 16,000 characters so apps no longer need to be split into multiple comments; however this is at players' discretion.

Samples

[ when nagi appears on the screen of the pokegear, behind him shows the inside of a fresh new home. bought just a week or so ago, it's still a bit empty in terms of furniture, decorations . . . but-! slowly, it's growing.

he sits, giving a sigh as he pulls his ( only ) chair, and greets the feed with a silent smile. clearing his throat and hand pressing just a bit over the collar bone ( of which is covered by his scarf ), a metallic brushing sound makes itself heard, and very soon after, he speaks: voice synthesized and artificial. ]

Ah— Hello, everyone. For the new faces here, my name is Nagi, Nagi Kengamine— and this is Aster.

[ he shifts a bit to this side, and moves the camera to reveal his bulbasaur, turning from her work to give a friendly 'bulba', before resuming her errands, fixing and placing their new egg batch around comfy little blankets, as if to make a nest. she was something of a mother hen, you see . . . ! he gives a small, scratchy chuckle, before turning back to the screen. ]

As some may know, I'm a breeder here in Ecruteak City. I rather enjoy a challenge from time to time, so if there are any requests . . . Well, I'll do my best to breed it. As of right now—

[ he turns back to gesture to the eggs. ]

Charmanders and Scraggies, both should be born with Dragon Dance, the former also with Drain Punch— as well as a few other inherited techniques that I'll list with the document attached.

[ this was a request that took a pretty long time to breed out-! breeding the right altaria with the right charizard, charizard with scrafty, and scrafty with mienshao. tedious, but fruitful in the end! it was probably the right time to sell his fish, no? ]

I've heard of Scrafties becoming formidable foes with the combination of those two attacks, together with their dual typing. I have yet to experience it firsthand, but perhaps I'll hear from a future owner one day-?

[  he laughs again ( the same, scratchy, silent sound ). ah, just one more thing-! ]

I've also managed Mienfoo and Swablu eggs, all needing homes. Starting prices are as listed, albeit negotiable, and I'm not above a trade, either!

I suppose that will be all for now. Thank you for your time, and if there is interest— I'll be happy to help you.

Third Person Sample:

The last thing he had seen was darkness. Everything going warm and slowly blurring before his eyes. The pain had completely lulled him at the time, feeling nothing but the energy slip away from his fingers-- and when he was ready to rest, smiling and complimenting his comrades, he shuts his eyes, he smiles, and he drifts to what ever end awaited him, whether it was the afterlife, or a chance to live life anew . . .

Except, well. Starting over in a world like this hadn't been expected. Those kind of things usually worked differently, didn't they? And yet, here he was; his throat baring the same scar, his artificial voice to accompany the memory, the prison collar nowhere to be seen, his devastatingly broken body healed and his missing arm returned to him. It was all very odd, and to add to the oddity was the kind woman that ushered him out of the house he'd awoken in, and the Bulbasaur that accompanied him every step of the way.

Now, the two are seated outside of New Bark Town; Nagi gathers what information he could, using the Pokégear and the ever helpful Pokéconnect. He reads the hand guides, he asks about-- and until he's fully informed, he fails to give it a rest.

He was finally free. And after several days, optimism has fully found him, just as the near Cherrygrove-- death had paid him a visit, death took him-- and death left him here. He has yet to see his wife, what would have been of his son . . . And perhaps, just perhaps-- he's found things a lot more coincidental than they should be.

To start, the Bulbasaur very much reminded him of her. A flower that's getting a second chance to bloom. And to be a breeder of all things, literally raising infants . . . it was a strange way, if he thought about it, if this was the way he'd get to redo certain things, and as they walk, with Aster by his side, his mouth parts, his lips quirk, and he gives a silent laugh; mostly the sound of intakes and exhales of breath, with a touch of a scraping, metallic sound.

Bulba?, she hums, tilting her head up with question to her laughing partner, to which he replies with certain fondness.

"She'd laugh at me, is all." Laugh at in a friendly way, of course. He wondered where she was quite a few times, and if she were here, he'd find her-- but until then, crying and spiraling into depression won't do him any good ( the last time that happened, it didn't turn out good for anyone ).  He also thought of his friends, of Karako and Ganta, Scar Chain as a whole . . . He felt it, they had a life ahead of them. They've made it this far and they'll make it farther.

He shakes his head, smiling down to his partner with eyebrows furrowed in a meeker expression. "There's not much else I can do, is there?" He wish he could, really-- Aster simply retorts with a docile huff, closing her eyes and shaking her head. He was still thinking about it! With good reason, he cared very much for them. Of course, you also had to know when it was time to let go. Nagi pauses in his steps, experiencing the soft winds of Cherrygrove's shore. Gazing up to the evening sky, appreciating the mixture of colors and air-- Nagi's expression softens in a relieving way, self calming, even.

"Fair weather for our evening-- for the sky is red." Weather sayings, complete with double meanings. Nagi was guilty of having a knack for using them; in fact, he enjoyed them. Just as said . . . It's another day, and so far, the skies are clear, red, and calm. Spilled blood didn't mean the end, but a calm after the storm.

i hope this clears a few things up-!

Nagi is, down to the point, an honest man by heart and soul. Kindhearted, warm, friendly, and an excellent leader head with a calm demeanor-- One wouldn't expect a man like Nagi to have been a former prisoner on death row for years and counting ( he was most likely framed for something he didn't do, but that isn't said or confirmed in canon ). He speaks politely and presents himself just as well-mannered, making sure he doesn't offend by choosing his words, and always keeping calm in a very agitated environment for the good of others ( and for himself ). He's quick to make friends and to help those in need, whether the person is an intimidating one or not, whether their views and outlooks are similar or complete opposites, in hopes of gaining allies and befriending the unlikely in every which way. You'll never know when you need them ( for example: when we consider his interest in Ganta after his match with Minatsuki, and to quickly gain his trust, moving his pawns and hacking into the prison system to do what he wished: to help give her a lighter penalty ).

Nagi seems to be balanced; modest, friendly, and expressive, without being too much of these things. He laughs with his comrades, show humility when those very people praise him— revenge is a waste of time for him when he clearly has reason to seek vengeance. Push comes to shove, he's not that kind of guy, preferring to pursue what will truly make him happy. He's charismatic, inspirational, respected, and it's almost clear as to why nearly everyone in Scar Chain adores him ( including one, who actually loves him ).

With strong points come weak points, Nagi is also fairly naive. He trusts people much too easily and much too quickly, getting him into either unfortunate situations that bring along betrayal, or a loyal friend by his side. He doesn't like to point fingers beforehand, neither does he have the habit of judging a book by its cover-- innocent until proven guilty, because-- he was that way, wasn't he? And yet, when there should have been a chance to defend himself, he was sent straight to Deadman Wonderland with no say in the matter. This, again, is a double-ended sword, and betrayal has happened more than once in his life due to his fidelity in others ( the biggest mistake was with The Promotor, where he lost his wife and son, and also with Rokuro, who later betrays Scar Chain ). Yet, Nagi fails to learn due to a blinding subject that stabs right at his heart; justice. Wanting to be nothing like the prison that chained him, Nagi has a sense of fairness that he feels everyone has the right to have— it's benefit of the doubt, because he himself wished he could have had it. You do to others what you would do to yourself, and Nagi is a classic, hardheaded example of that, hanging on to his personal code even if it costs him an arm ( and it did ).

Not completely blinded, Nagi's trust in a person falters and breaks when presented with solid evidence to prove everything he once thought wrong-- but until then, he unfortunately keeps believing. Once he's seen the truth, Nagi becomes a rather merciless person, unafraid to treat those that cross his path and do him wrong once as the enemy, and fights as such, soft front nonexistent. He fights fiercely, and is in no way as defenseless as his general "nice guy" attitude can make him look. He even has a tongue depending on the situation ( the anime's "Pardon me, but kiss my ass." ). To survive everyday in Deadman Wonderland and act as leader of the rebellion group, "Scar Chain", Nagi can't be someone who's so easily turned over.

He fights for what he wants with blaring determination, and when he needs it, coldness, no matter his opponent. If they show clear intent to hurt, maim, kill him or any of those precious to him, adult or child ( for example: hibana daida, who attacks him and manages to amputate his arm ), Nagi doesn't try and reason with his attacker-- No, he fights. At least this, he knows that there's no way around. Nagi knows how to face the crueler aspects-- he's learned to deal with that, when he's been face to face with death for a good chunk of his life, especially prison life. He's learned to react with emotionless rationality when it comes to violence, and nothing more. Had he not, he wouldn't have survived so many battles with only his vocal chords to have been taken from him. His demeanor is calm, calculating at these times-- and is always such. He never breaks this composure, never panics ( panic would do no good for anything, after all ), and pushes through when his comrades falter, giving them strength to do the same.

Back to some main points, Nagi is also someone who is extremely optimistic, perhaps, where his naiveté stems from, or vice versa. He sees hope in every corner, a shimmer of light in every pitch black hole despite the cruel world of Deadman Wonderland he had previously lived in, and despite the things he's been through ( he even likes using weather sayings as metaphors ). What had once kept him going was the thought of freedom, and the thought of holding his newborn child he believed was in a nursery outside of prison.

His son and wife have been mentioned a few times, so I'll take a moment to explain it, for it's something that affects Nagi for more than half of his time in canon; For the larger portion of Nagi's appearance, the man was living a lie his own mind had created to cope with horrible trauma. His wife was killed in front of him-- this, he has accepted and coped with ( he still mourns, but he has accepted this fact ), but truly believing his son was being cared for outside of prison, being that sparkle of light in the pitch black hole-- His hope and salvation. This was a huge illusion, though. Nagi's son had died in the womb when his wife was murdered, and was then disturbingly shown to him by the promoter at the time-- put in a container and preserved as a specimen, as the first child of two deadmen. This was the tip of the ice berg so to speak, and several days after these events, Nagi went mentally berserk, brutally killing dozens of prison guards in cold blood, a sane thought process nearly nonexistent. These events were then erased by Nagi as a defense and coping mechanism, and since then he remembers nothing related to what had happened.

He didn't remember that his son was dead. He didn't remember those he killed after that, and the blood bath he caused-- the experience was so traumatic for him, Nagi didn't remember that these things ever existed. To him, he never killed those people-- but someone did ( just not him ). He never painted the walls with blood and crushed intestines, skulls, and bones in his hands. To him, his son had never died. No, his son is waiting for him on the outside of prison walls. Nagi even carried a locket with the baby's picture in it, once showing it to a friend while blushing, laughing as he recalled his precious child-- but the locket was in fact empty, and had always stayed empty. Just not in his eyes.

Nagi was once an extremely broken, traumatized individual that was very close to losing it— and he actually did lose it again, when he was captured, drugged, tortured and reminded by Genkaku of his memories. He goes rampant with grief, claiming that there was no longer hope, only despair, that it wasn't fair that everyone else was still alive but not his light, his wife and child who did nothing wrong. He goes on, killing both enemies and friends alike as the misery blinds him, and without thought, he continuously attacks Ganta-- That is, until both he and Karako begin to speak, and brings to him other memories.

It's here where he see just how much pride and love he has for his friends. In the beginning, he used his dead son as his number one motive to break out of prison— because anything else was just too painful at the time. Holding a child in his arms that was long gone was his salvation, making him miss the biggest picture— one that is ( literally ) smacked at him, snapping him out of it.

Ganta's gesture to protect his friends no matter what, along with a physical shake-up from Karako sparks a reminder in Nagi that gives him reason once more to see the light— the very people he's helped and befriended, fought with and protected. Karako keeps a tiny bell around her neck, and back when they met, Nagi comments that when he hears that sound, he knows that he has a companion near by ( "when i hear your bell, i get the feeling that even in this place, the sun can shine" ). The chiming brings him back to the importance he almost let slip his mind completely, though Nagi is completely horrified with what he's done and could have done, openly showing remorse and even crying, shaking as he looks for the right words to explain what had happened in his shattered mind and what he had to say for himself— but being forgiven, treated as he's always been treated, everything falls back into place, and everything that was once dark begins to lighten. He continues to have salvation, and that salvation, that hope is what's around him— the people that brighten up his days on a daily basis, where he comes to terms with his child's death, and begins fighting for the present; fighting for what's presently precious to him, those that need him.

In the end, it costs him his life; Genkaku blows a hole into his stomach and incapacitates Nagi immediately. Despite the life clearly blown out of him, his persistence to help end the war pulls Nagi to still have the strength to drag himself to Genkaku and hold the other in place to receive a finishing blow by Ganta, bringing his own suffering closer to an end. With his dying breath, Nagi retains a smile on his face, speaks highly of his friends and their courage, hope, determination-- and what they've helped him see before it was too late, offering to Ganta his last antidote before passing.

In the end, Nagi never ceased to be that kindhearted man he was first shown to be. He had a stumble, a mental breakdown that had been building up gradually for years until it was impossible to bottle down ( and only being coaxed to let it all out )— and a rather violent stumble at that, but Nagi remains a caring individual that persists above all struggle, hopes where there's only gloom. His death brings a passing, one of acceptance of everything he's been denying since his life went to hell ( so to speak ), so there are fears and griefs that have passed on and made him a stronger person both by heart and mind. He has a much stronger sense of friendship than he did before; he still laughs and beams with the very faith he was shown before finally being free.
