APPLICATIONS!
Currently: Closed!
Route 29 has closed as of May 30th. For the continuation of the game, please visit [community profile] victory_road!

Applications will be normally checked during the weekend following the first and third Sunday of each month unless otherwise stated, and we will allow one application per person during one application cycle. Remember, the most characters one player can have at a time is currently set at five.

Applications received after 11:59 PM EST on Saturday of the first and third weekend of each month will be checked the following app weekend unless otherwise stated.

We now ask that potential applicants post their application in comments rather than linking. If their application contains explicit references to 'hard' spoilers (character death, unforeseen plot twists, big reveals, he was evil all along etc), players should put the application in their own journal or their character's journal and link it, making sure to mention the presence of spoilers within. For further clarification on our spoilers policy and whether or not your application needs to be linked, please check this page. Thank you for your cooperation!

The comment character limit on dreamwidth is 16,000 characters so apps no longer need to be split into multiple comments; however this is at players' discretion.

Please use the form below and post your application in comments rather than linking if you can. If you have any questions, feel free to ask either of the mods. You can reach us through emails, IMs, or PMs.

A reminder for those waiting to hear back, please don't be worried if we skip yours while going through them. It only means we needed a little more time to research!

Dante Alighieri | Dante's Inferno | Non-Reserved | 2/2

[personal profile] redenzione 2013-08-03 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
Personality:

In a nutshell, Dante is a man who has made a lot of bad life choices but realises his mistakes and saves his fiance, kicks Lucifer's butt back to Hell while finding redemption for his soul. Talk about a busy after-life.

Seriously though, the best way to describe Dante is through the opening line of the game:

"At the midpoint on the journey of life, I found myself in a dark forest - for the clear path was lost..."

And the clear path was lost indeed.

Dante started out a a man with very good intentions but allowed his feelings of anger and frustration to take over. It doesn't help that he received what he thought was a Free-for-All to do whatever he wanted during the Crusades from a bishop; with a pre-absolution of all sins he may commit during the war Dante lost all self-control and ran the gamut of war crimes, fuelled by his sense of self-perceived superiority and other negative emotions.

This tendency of his to act based on emotions can however be both good and bad. This man literally busted through Hell's door and fought through 8 and a half levels of sin to rescue his girlfriend, even when she temporarily turned against him. And once that business is done then only does he look to matters regarding his own salvation. It really didn't matter to him if he rotted in Hell so long as Beatrice makes it to Heaven. How's that for a declaration of undying love?

The fact is that although Dante makes a hell of a lot bad decisions (yes, that was a deliberate pun), he does realise his mistakes and tries to fix them. Sure it takes dying and nearly condemning your girlfriend to Hell for breaking a solemn promise BUT the important thing is that he really tried hard to right all that had done wrong even if there was no guarantee that he'd be saved afterwards. In fact he had come to accept that he was in Hell as a result of his own sins and that he was paying for all that he had done. But what he would not accept was his lover having to suffer when she herself had done nothing wrong.

The journey through Hell has really changed Dante's perception on himself. The consequences of his sins were very terrible and he had to confront the demons of his past; he nearly has a BSOD moment because the weight of all his crimes coupled with the knowledge that all had believed in it was very wrong nearly crippled him. He was challenged in every single way: physically, spiritually and mentally, but rather than give up he pulls himself together and carries on confronting his mistakes. By the ending of the game Dante had developed a strong sense of responsibility and a more mature outlook on good and evil. From a self-righteous, arrogant, brutal and fanatical Crusader so entrenched in the notion of his own holiness compared to others, Dante matured into a far better Christian by relearning the virtues of humility, understanding and love towards all of mankind, even those not of his faith. It's up to player discretion whether Dante absolves or damns some of the lost souls he encounters along the way but the canon ending seems to imply that he's done so much absolving that he could reseal Lucifer in his prison. He has learned to empathize with others and provide them with the peace that all of them are yearning for rather than point fingers from a pedestal.

Some other points to bring up about Dante: he's a very serious person. It might be due to the circumstances (one does not joke around during a war or when a soul is in jeopardy of eternal damnation) but overall he is a person who doesn't take matters lightly. It's really no laughing matter to see all your mistakes aired out again anyway, but Dante falls to his knees a LOT when confronted with them because he recognizes how badly he's messed up things.

He's also a guy who really just wants a loving happy family. He had a messed up childhood where his father abused him and his mother died; that's not exactly the best model of a happy home. He wants to get married with Beatrice and start a new life with her, to have all the things he was denied while growing up. And eventhough all of his dreams are shattered he still cares enough about his broken family to forgive and absolve them of their sins when he meets them despite most of them trying to kill him during their bloody reunions in Hell. He really loves all of them and fought close to the death to rescue their souls, even his father's.

At the midway point in his life, Dante could see no light at the end of the road. But through a combination of grace, hope and determination to save the person he loved the most he found the path back to the goodness within him. Through his lessons learned from characters divine, demonic and in between he repents of all his sins and continues to seek redemption.

Now what is he to do with all these cute creatures because he's pretty sure the Bible doesn't mention Pokemon in Purgatory.

OOC Note: For the sake of player comfort I'm going to tone down Dante's more religious aspects of his character even if it is a major part of who he is. I'll be including a player opt-out function as well.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

Strengths
1. Physically fit
He's been trained to fight wars in hard conditions.
2. Crusader
If Death and the Devil can't beat him, who else can? Dante's really proficient in the use of weapons; he wields them with expert form.
3. Creative
The clear path might be lost but sometimes you can take detours. Dante comes up on top of his enemies not just through brute strength but through some innovative use of the environment around him and his knowledge of his enemy's strengths and weaknesses.
4. Learner
By the end of the game Dante has come to terms with all he's done; he accepts that he's been a terrible person and that he has a lot of repenting to do. It's a big change from the proud man he once was and it represents a strength because he's now willing to learn from his mistakes rather than gloss them over.
5. Will-power
He fights through 9 levels of damnation and torture to rescue Beatrice even after she seemingly rejects his offer for help. Along the way he has to fight his own family, finds out his mother committed suicide AND discovers that his entire way of thinking for the past 35 years is wrong. With the help of Virgil he just about manages to pull out of his BSOD moment, pulls himself together and soldiers on. It's near impossible to stop this guy once he sets his mind to it.

Weaknesses
1. Temper trap
While Dante has acknowledged that he's let his worse emotions get the better of him, his temper is very much still a part of who he is. While he's learned to curb it better as a result of all he's been through he's still prone to displays of anger every now and then if baited properly.
2. Guilt trips
He has a lot to feel guilty over, but sometimes his guilt is more of a hindrance than a help. Dante can get into very bad funks where he'd rather just crawl into a hole and die than get up and carry on. He'll eventually get over it, yes, but it takes time and encouragement that sadly he might not always get.
3. Cultural and time displaced warrior
He's from 1196 AD; they didn't even have glass windows back then. Imagine how mind blown he'll be when he discovers instant noodles. There's definitely a lot he has to catch up in terms of technology. He'll have to deal with all the different cultures and mindsets of the various people from different worlds, so that's a double culture shock. Adjustments are really going to take time.
4. Emotional
Temper trap and guilt trips somewhat covers this, but Dante really does wear his heart on his sleeve; that makes him really easy to read, and makes him more prone to bad mistakes as a result of feeling overly sad, angry or depressed.

Samples
First Person Sample:

[Christmas is a week away and Dante's going to well-prepared for it in more ways than one. The video opens with him grinning at the audience, a bit of pine stuck on his hair. A slight chirp from a Togetic nearby alerts him to the presence of his new hair accessory, and he removes it with a slight chuckle before gently shooing his Pokemon away to the other corner of the room.]

Come now Beatrice, it would not count as a surprise come Christmas if you knew beforehand what I am getting you. Patience.

[Beatrice chirps cheerfully and nuzzles his hand before flying away to hang some decorations. Dante watches her go fondly, but not without a somewhat wistful and sad look. He looks down at his hand and sighs.]

...if only you were truly here...Beatrice...

-!! Ah!!

[And that's when he realises that he's accidentally left the gear going for so long.]

I am sorry for keeping you all waiting, but my dear Beatrice has been trying hard to find out what I'm getting her for Christmas. I am not sure of the likings of a Togetic; if she was my steed from home, I would get her a bag full of the juiciest carrots. If any of you would be so kind to advise me on the matter I would be most grateful.

Third Person Sample:

Dante watched with a mixture of awe and apprehension as the moment of truth arrived. With the rest of his Pokemon at his side, all eyes were trained on the slow cracking of the egg before them. One piece of shell fell after another, before finally a pair of big brown eyes opened up and met Dante's own gaze. A wide grin spread across his face and he raised a hand to beckon the newly hatched Charmander his way. The tiny lizard stumbled out of the remnants of its former shell and slowly crawled its way, landing eventually on Dante's open palm.

He can't help the giant smile on his face; this is his first egg that he's successfully hatched. He'd been worried while waiting the date of birth; what if he wasn't keeping the egg properly warm, or if some tragedy befell the poor thing before it's term was up? He'd be devastated, that's for sure.

The Charmander clung onto his hand with its tiny paws; it was very, very adorable, even when it proceeded to show Dante its affection through a sudden bite on his thumb. Dante merely laughed and gently shook the latest addition to his team off his skin.

"Feisty one, aren't you?"

The Charmander blinked his eyes up Dante's way and gave his first big grin, before attempting to stand on its two new feet. Unused to the new movement though, the new-born wobbles and nearly falls over. Dante quickly leans forward and allows the Charmander to fall into his arms.

"Careful now!"

As the Pokemon latches onto his arms, he's struck with a sense of sudden sadness. Once upon a time, he would have loved to start a family with Beatrice. To father his own child and ensure that his children would lead much happier lives than the one he had. To raise them to be good people, alongside with the love of his life. He could've had the life he'd always dreamed off. How could he have foolishly lost sight of what could have been and thrown it all away in his blind madness? And he had endangered her soul, near condemned her to the darkest place in existence.

He had not considered her when he made his foolish mistakes, and it had cost him nearly everything.

A sharp pain on his thumb broke him out of his reverie; apparently his new Charmender wanted some attention, possibly Pokemon chow. With a kind smile he picked up the Pokemon as gentle as he would with a child and walked over to the kitchen.

This place may be far from Heaven but it was his Purgatory. He would treat each Pokemon that came into his care as his own, and learn to love and cherish each one of them. In a way, he was a father here, with all his Pokemon as his children. He will guide them with patience and understanding, and he will ensure they do not follow his bloody footsteps. This will be his Purgatory, his path to redemption.

He knows Beatrice will be proud. Wherever she may be, he knows she is watching over him from Paradise.

And he can live that.

"Let's get you some food, boy. You must be hungry indeed if my thumb looks a meal to you. Then we shall settle on a name."
