Name: Rude
Series: Final Fantasy 7 series
Timeline: Post FF7 Advent Children
Canon Resource Links: Wikia article.
Personality: A first impression of Rude would paint a very serious picture especially if he's first met while he's on the clock. Rude comes off as serious and stoic when he's acting in his professional capacity, and he can play the part of the intimidating Turk very well. He can be forward and to the point, but more often than not he prefers to leave the talking to others. People might assume that he's just not an emotional kinda guy with his serious demeanour and the way he tends to keep his words to himself, but the truth of the matter is that he finds it difficult to think of the correct words to use to explain the situation best, especially when the situation is a complex one.
In actual fact, Rude is a bit of a sentimental romantic underneath the image of the tough, ruthless and silent Turk that he creates for himself, whether consciously or unconsciously. He can get downright mushy when it comes to crushes and he does display a somewhat chivalrous attitude towards the women he crushes on, eg. buying flowers for a girl he dates in Before Crisis, and refusing to lay a finger on Tifa in any of the Turk battles during FF7. He gets embarrassed when confronted on his own relationship matters and he does display his more shy and introverted self when in the presence of close friends and loved ones.
He is also rather protective of his fellow Turks and displays a lot of concern for their safety. One way to actually draw an outright display of emotions out of Rude is to threaten and/or injure his team mates. As a younger man in FF7 Before Crisis, Rude actually breaks his usual calm professionalism with a rather heated outburst when he encounters the Avalanche member who injured his partner. He controls his emotions a lot better by the time of the original FF7 game, choosing to instead coolly threaten Avalanche over injuring Reno but the fact remains that one way to make him mad is to hurt his partner. Rude is also very loyal to the Turks, rather than the Shinra company that the Turks work for. The Turks view each other as something akin to family and each are willing to forsake their loyalty to Shinra, an action that would mean almost certain death, if it would mean standing by the side of their fellow Turk.
However, Rude is far from the good guy of the series. He does his fair share of bad things and takes it in stride, appearing unaffected by the moral and ethical implications of some of the missions he's had to do. He isn't necessarily a bad person but he has accepted that part of his job as a Turk involves acts that would make a normal man blanch. The Turks are involved in kidnappings, blackmail, espionage, theft and murder and as one of the senior members of the group Rude is definitely no stranger to any of them. Rude, like his partner Reno, displays a very professional approach to their work; they will get the job done, by hook or by crook. He doesn't seem bothered at all by the fact that he kidnaps people to be forcibly part of SOLDIER; to tell the truth he seems more worried about his junior's ability to handle the job, rather than the abduction aspect of it.
Rude also loves the action-orientated life of a Turk. He wouldn't be able to stomach an everyday ordinary life; as he muses to himself in "The Case of Shinra", he'd miss the thrill and adrenaline that comes with each mission. He can't see himself doing anything else and the thought of not being a Turk is almost painful to him. Rude takes pride in being a Turk and is confident in his abilities to see his way through every mission.
The success of the mission always seems to be the end goal for the Turks but the Turks aren't just blind followers of Shinra company eager to obey; their final loyalty is to the Turk name, to their fellow Turks, and to a certain extent Rufus Shinra. They will observe the situation and make judgement calls regarding their orders and it just so happens that most of the time, morals and ethics don't play as large a part in their decision-making as keeping each other alive and caring for each other's well-being do. Rude does his job but even the Turks need days off too and unless it's an emergency equivalent to an abduction of the President he's not going to jump up and abandon his well-deserved and well-earned holiday. And there are orders that Rude is reluctant to carry out. Rude may not have much reservations about the dirtier aspects of his job, but in FF7 Before Crisis even he can't bring himself to hand over all the injured survivors of Sephiroth's rampage into Professor Hojo's hands to be used as guinea pigs for the professor's experiments, or hunt down and terminate a former Turk that he has nothing but respect and absolute loyalty to. It could be argued that these incidents might've been due to the fact that he was a younger man at the time and as such he appears more cool and comfortable with the shady aspects of his job by the original game. However, even as an older man he agrees with Reno that there's no point in fighting and potentially losing his life over an order from a company that's gone bust and when the Planet is potentially about to be obliterated by a piece of rock from the sky. There's just so much more he can do with the little time that's left, like organizing an evacuation and spending that time with those he actually cares about. Not Shinra Co, but his other fellow Turks.
Lastly, I'd like to end this personality section with a paragraph covering one of Rude's most important character relationships in the game: that of his long partnership with Reno. The two play off as near total opposites to each other. Apart from their dedication to their jobs as Turks and their seniority, Rude and Reno are really quite unalike each other. Reno wears his uniform messily and slouches, while Rude is as neat as a pin and stands up with straight back. Where Rude is silent and stern, Reno will supply a sarcastic comment or a quick quip and snark on. But Rude's more balanced and stable attitude is a good counter-balance to Reno's more impulsive behaviour. The two make up for each other's weaknesses and allows them to concentrate on their respective strengths ie. Reno's speed and Rude's strength. Add to that their great teamwork and rapport and you've got a duo that's hard to beat. Reno is Rude's best friend and his partner; it's not to say that he cares for the other Turks less but he and Reno have a special friendship with each other and there's no other Turk that he's closest to or more comfortable to chat and confide in than Reno, despite the latter's tendency of gossiping every not and then. Rude cracks his serious exterior and speaks more casually to Reno than anyone else. Although the red-head might do most of the teasing and joking, Rude might not only come up with a come-back but he also makes a few quips and teasing comments to Reno every now and then, be it at a bar downing a few drinks or when they're in a bad situation fighting for their lives. When he makes a dangerous stand against the enemy, Reno has always been by his side. It's hard to see Reno without Rude and vice versa because they're amazing partners and they both know it.

Strengths
Rude is known as the Turk with the most physical strength; while not on the same level as Cloud, Tifa and gang, he's strong enough to hold his own against monsters and other trained fighters. When with Reno he becomes even more of a feared opponent, with Reno often acting as the distraction for Rude to close in and deliver a powerful blow to their enemies. Rude also has been trained in all of the standard skills Turks would need to have in their line of work: he's best with hand-to-hand combat, decent with explosives and firearms, and has probably received training that would assist in infiltration and kidnapping, as well as training on enduring torture and escaping should he be caught during a mission. He can also fly a helicopter.
Weaknesses
Rude's soft spot for crushes can be and has been taken advantage of. He's not the best with words and sometimes he does have to ponder quite a bit to properly convey what he wants to say. Without his partner and the Turks, Rude shuts in on himself; his stern and serious appearance make social interactions difficult enough without him already having to deal with words. Rude can get emotional and be taunted into doing something stupid, but only if Reno is being actively threatened and is in serious danger. Rude also remembers those who have crossed the Turks; he makes it a point to remind them that payback will be coming one day. Lastly, his loose approach to morales and ethics could make him enemies and deter people from befriending him. He might be on the good guy's side post Advent Children, but that doesn't mean he's any less likely to engage in criminal activity if it's to protect his Turk buddies.

[He's in a quandary now. Quickly he reaches for his Pokegear and looks for the Rocket contacts, sending a voice message to each of them.]
Rude here.
[There's a pause; he's got to word this in a way that doesn't make it sound like the situation's not salvageable, but at the same time convey enough urgency to HQ for them to send some back-up. He knows he'll have to explain to his superiors how the other Rocket he had been partnered with had managed to mess things up so badly, but that would have to come later. Right now, what matters is the mission.
Alright, this sounds like it might work.]
The mission has been completed. Requesting pick-up for ten Pokemon stolen from various trainers between levels 23 and 50 including one Clefable, one Milotic and one Mienshao. We are personally unable to complete delivery due to...
[What, because he was going to try and break into the police station to rescue the other Rocket guy who got himself into that mess in the first place? That might've worked if this was Tseng he was reporting to, if he was still back in his world, and if this was a Turk mission that hadn't gone to Hell because the person he was partnered with got careless.
No, better to try and minimise the damage already done. No need to get that guy in trouble with both the police AND their Rocket superiors. The mission would be considered finished by the time the stolen Pokemon were handed to another Rocket member anyway. He didn't have anything preventing him from rescuing the guy now, not like the first time when Rude ran off after the idiot alerted the Kangaskhan police.]
...circumstances.
[A weak excuse, but it'll have to do.]
We will report back to HQ by 0900 hours tomorrow morning.
Rude out.
[That was the Rocket part taken care off. With a sinking feeling, he picked out a few other names in his Pokegear, going over and over in his head how he was going to explain to his non-Rocket mates that he was going to have to miss tonight's card game. He could say that his Tyrogue was being a pain again, but he's already used that excuse last week. Besides, the little fellow was getting tired of being used as a scapegoat.
In the end, he issued the following message out:]
Rude here. I, umm...I can't make it tonight. Some problems came up. They're hard to explain. It's, well, you see...it's my Tyrogue.
[Sorry buddy, he's not good with this and he can't think of what to say.]
Yeah, Punch is...[another few moments of silence; he said Punch was sick last time. He can't use the same excuse again! Seconds tick by, and eventually he blurts out:]
...acting strange. Doesn't seem too well. It might be serious, so I'm taking him to the PokeCenter. For a check-up.
[Some days, he'll be able to invent excuses for day-to-day situations that don't sound re-used and rehashed.]
Go on without me. I'll join you guys next week. Sorry.
Third Person Sample:
The strangest thing about landing yourself in an entirely new world where everyone walked around with cute creatures at their side, battling each other through their pets and collecting little badges isn't that the whole thing seems like a kid's fantasy come true. Rather, it was picking out the differences between this world and his, and learning that actually, there are some things that are eerily quite similar.
Take for example, this fine establishment. Rude might feel a little baked having to wear his normal suit on top of his Rocket uniform, but honestly he found himself fitting into Team Rocket almost like the organization was tailor made for him. Committing immoral crimes without considering any form of ethics, forming what could be bonds of brotherhood among a den of thieves, no retirement plan that doesn't end with jail/in a body bag (he's not sure they do that in Team Rocket; they said they didn't, but you never know) and a uniform.
Rude has to admit, he finds himself enjoying this Rocket job a bit more than he thought he would at the start. I mean, when they gave him a list of missions available to Rocket grunts, he had to struggle to keep a straight face because kidnapping cute tiny pets from 10 year olds didn't seem to be as fitting a job description for a supposedly nefarious and shadowy organization. But that was before he found out that the cute blue turtle water Pokemon that kept trying to steal his shades? That bubbly thing could grow up into a huge, mean water blasting tank. And trainers weren't just limited to prepubescent teens; there were real challenges out there, waiting to be fought and defeated. After his first few fights with some of the older trainers, Rude had to admit there was something exciting about watching his tiny Tyrogue tackle the stuffing out of an opposing Senret. And of course, the risk that came with each successful Rocket heist always meant that there was a sense of danger. Rude started off with the young ones, just to get a feel of the scene, but eventually he moved his way up and before long he was nicking level 40 Pokemon from veteran trainers. The excitement was reminiscent of his job as a Turk. The morality of what he did didn't bother him at all (OK, perhaps some of the dewey eyed looks he got from the 10 year olds might've got to him a little) but at least being a Rocket gave him a sense of purpose and some place where he could dedicate his loyalty to.
It could've almost been home.
Except that it wasn't.
True, he felt some sense of camaraderie with the other Rockets. Replace the goofy Red Rs on white with suits and some of the hilarious off-time moments the Rockets had at their rec rooms would not have been out of place at Shinra Co. But it wasn't the same; it couldn't be the same if he didn't have his red-haired partner by his side, doing all the things that buddy Turks do together like torturing some guy for information, blackmailing some seedy businessman with photos from the HoneyBee or roughing up some stupid thugs who thought that a whole gang could take on two Turks alone. Not just Reno either; he missed Tseng and Elena, even their boss Rufus Shinra. And not only the people he was currently working with, but even those who had left: Veld and the other junior Turks who all "disappeared" in the aftermath of that Zirconiade mess.
Reno would accuse him of being sentimental. Letting his feelings get in the way.
His Rocket partner may go out with him for a drink every now and then, play a game of cards, and tell him a funny story about whatever escapade gone wrong he'd had prior to their partnership, but he didn't know Rude. He let Rude do all the hard parts of a job; the intimidation, the threats, the actual hits and blows and nitty gritty bits of the job because he assumed Rude was just a sort of emotionless, amoral and apathetic robot. He didn't know what kind of drink Rude likes, or what was his favourite movie, or whether he had any Gym badges (a side hobby Rude engaged in outside of his Rocket duties). He assumed that Rude wasn't the kinda guy to have any life outside his work; a very common misconception, and one Rude was tired of explaining so he simply let the misconception go. He simply didn't bother because he just wasn't sure what words he could use to convince anyone otherwise.
So honestly? He might be satisfied, even happy with his job as a Rocket, but nothing would ever compare with the life he had before this. He'd do anything to have his life as a Turk back again with Reno, Tseng and Elena.
