Currently: Closed!
Route 29 has closed as of May 30th. For the continuation of the game, please visit [community profile] victory_road!

Applications will be normally checked during the weekend following the first and third Sunday of each month unless otherwise stated, and we will allow one application per person during one application cycle. Remember, the most characters one player can have at a time is currently set at five.

Applications received after 11:59 PM EST on Saturday of the first and third weekend of each month will be checked the following app weekend unless otherwise stated.

We now ask that potential applicants post their application in comments rather than linking. If their application contains explicit references to 'hard' spoilers (character death, unforeseen plot twists, big reveals, he was evil all along etc), players should put the application in their own journal or their character's journal and link it, making sure to mention the presence of spoilers within. For further clarification on our spoilers policy and whether or not your application needs to be linked, please check this page. Thank you for your cooperation!

The comment character limit on dreamwidth is 16,000 characters so apps no longer need to be split into multiple comments; however this is at players' discretion.

Please use the form below and post your application in comments rather than linking if you can. If you have any questions, feel free to ask either of the mods. You can reach us through emails, IMs, or PMs.

A reminder for those waiting to hear back, please don't be worried if we skip yours while going through them. It only means we needed a little more time to research!

Personality:
“If you want to get to know someone, find out what makes them angry.”

Gon is first introduced as a friendly, playful, but naive boy with a strange view of morals. It’s shown almost immediately that he doesn’t even view his father’s actions, who left Gon at an extremely young age to pursue a job as a hunter, as malicious or irresponsible. Instead, he comments that being a hunter must be an incredible job for Ging to have left him in favor of it. But, this is not merely shown with his Father, but for his best friend, Killua Zoldyck. Killua, whom introduces himself as a son of a famous family of assassins. He often says during the first arc that Killua is amazing. Even Hisoka, who kills other easily, isn’t a rival to Gon because of such a thing. Later on, Gon fights him partly to repay him for what happens to him during the Hunter’s Exam. Hisoka had refused to take something that Gon needed to pass the exam, punching the younger boy, and telling him only to return the item when Gon could punch him as well.

He makes friends seemingly easily. Whether it’s the quiet, private Kurapika, or the outspoken, loud, but good hearted Leorio, Gon appears to befriend people quickly, and without much thought from his end. In the 1999 anime, he’s shown to be quite stubborn in following Leorio at first. Becoming allies with him is the end result in such a thing. But, perhaps Gon’s kind hearted nature is what attracts others to him. Though, Gon’s own outspokenness towards others can lead those around him to be flustered, or even sometimes quite amused. He doesn’t hesitate to say how he feels, or what may be on his mind. His simple-mindedness might be what to thank for this. However, with his innocence, he’s also quite trusting. Even when it’s a mere stranger whom he had only just met, Gon doesn’t seem to hesitate to believe in their words.

One might even call Gon fairly naive for his actions or reasonings, and even the way he acts towards others--he befriends animals easily, and others who may be a danger to him without much care. However, part of this may be to blame for the way he grew up. He had grown up among animals without any human friends. However, it is because of this that others can see qualities that a good hunter has within him. There is much to being a hunter--however, being able to tame and know animals appears to be quite the great part of the job.

"May I ask you something? How do you... kill people with no connection with you?"

However, Gon also appears to have quite the temper. During the times where he’s determined, he is either hot headed and rash--resulting in him being almost entirely too reckless, or when he’s level headed and extremely cold towards others. There are times when he has even lost himself within his anger, no longer listening to even his comrade and friends. He’s shown numerous times that it has frustrated him that he’s weaker than his enemies, and during the course of the series, he strives to become stronger and stronger. However, later on, his anger shows to be almost a fatal downfall.

Sometimes his anger appears to come from a situation he doesn’t understand completely--such as a group of villains shedding tears for their comrades, or later one when a supposed enemy begs for Gon to give her time.

He is also extremely self destructive. He finds a strange joy in the rush of an extremely dangerous or risky challenge. Again, this part of him leads to his own suffering--even going as far as losing an arm during an extremely dangerous fight. He had ignored both his tutor and best friend’s requests to withdraw, and proceeded regardless of his injuries to defeat his enemy.

His animalistic and inhuman qualities are often noted by enemies/opponents, as well. It isn’t merely in how far he can go in a fight, but it shows within his speed, his skill to be able to not only hear well but smell extremely well, and his senses and knowledge of the world around him as well. Though, this has been used to his advantage as well numerous times--keeping both himself and his allies out of danger.

Gon’s reckless nature has led those who care about him to be incredibly worried for him, and even sometimes overprotective of him. However, Gon is not oblivious to that sort of thing at all. Although he seems to be downright dull-witted at time, Gon knows his friends well--especially his best friend, who seems to worry for him to an extreme degree. During some scenes, Gon is apologetic for such a thing, however. His actions are never malicious.

"I can't stand being on the losing end forever!!"

Unlike other shonen protagonists, Gon seeks to become stronger not only to protect those around him, but because he appears to be exceedingly frustrated when he loses, or is weaker to those around him. However, this isn’t shown until the third arc of the series--this is when he begins to train with Nen. Nen is the power that others use in the world of Hunter x Hunter.

Although young and simple minded, Gon is also incredibly talented for his age. The Hunter Exam is a test that many people have died during and retaken numerous times. However, Gon has passed on his first try. Part of this was because of his extreme stubbornness. Gon will not give up until he gets what he wants through a fight.

Gon’s desire to become stronger and help his friends is something that shapes his character, whether for better or worse. However, despite his strangely changed attitude during the Chimera Ants arc, Gon remains to be extremely warm and friendly towards those who are close to him. No matter what happens to him, his main goal never seems to change from finding his father. Despite Ging pushing him away and telling him that he does not want Gon to find him, the young boy never falters with his goals.

Strengths/Weaknesses: ✔ Animal-like/athletic: Gon’s abilities are first shown in an extremely animalistic manner. This does not require any skills that are strictly from his own word, but can be used in the Pokemon world, as well. Gon is extremely fast, a skilled jumper, and has an extremely keen sense of smell. This is from growing up among animals instead of mostly humans. He is extremely observant, as well.

✔ Quite the fisher: Although only seen once in doing this: Gon is quite the skilled fisher! In the beginning, hes shown to catch an extremely large fish that others on the island could not catch themselves.

✔ A heart of gold: Gon is friendly towards the majority of people he meets. This is save, of course, for the antagonists of the series. His kind-hearted nature and simple-mindedness has given him the friends he has. He’s even made friends with those who were his opponents (though, some of this was because of his stubbornness).

✔ Friendship: He is extremely loyal to his friends/allies.

✔ Jajanken: Nen is an ability unique to the Hunter x Hunter world--this ability uses a body’s aura to create abilities of immense strength. From the point where I am taking Gon, he’s grown strong enough to use his fists to make even concrete turn into nothing but rubble. Of course, he will not be able to use this ability in Route.

✔ Hero complex: Gon appears to be quick to save others from danger when the situation calls for it. For example, during the Greed Island arc, Gon wishes to save an entire village from a disease, despite that they’re NPCs (and Killua is the one who reminds him of this). He’s quick to want to protect his friends from stronger forces, as well, or even just to help them in a fight. This does not only show with animals, but humans as well. Gon cares greatly for animals. Even as a small boy, he protected what was supposedly a dangerous animal, and befriended it.

✔ Strong-willed: This trait has helped him succeed in many challenges.

✔ Honesty: Gon doesn’t hesitate to speak his mind--other characters have seemed to find this as a charming trait to his personality. Others however, not so much. It’s rare to see Gon lie to another character. However, he isn’t honest or blunt to a negative degree.

✘ Stubbornness/recklessness: As said, when angered or when feeling challenged, Gon is extremely reckless and stubborn until he achieves his goal. This has led to some injuries for him. Although this may prove useful to a degree in Route, it’s still more of a weakness rather than a strength. After all, Gon loses rational thought easily in a fight.

✘ Naive: Thanks to the fact that Gon was raised around animals more than people, he can be quite naive about the world around him. With this said, he is also sometimes easily confused (this shows, for example, during the Greed Island arc).

✔ ✘ Emotional: Gon’s emotions can get the best of him--especially if hes angered. He’s easy to read--whether he’s excited, sad, or angry. This is both a negative and positive trait. Losing himself in his anger is what has lead others to almost be in quite the dangerous situations.

✘ The love of a challenge: During the third arc, Killua notes that Gons enjoying a dangerous fight--this doesn’t fade. Although this is expected of a protagonist in a shonen manga, Gon has taken on opponents that he has almost no hope of winning against. It’s partly because of this that others have called him crazy.

✘ Physical limits: Despite his powers, Gon is constantly finding new enemies that are stronger than him. Because of this, he constantly seeks ways to grow even stronger. However, despite finding that strength later on in the manga, it does prove to be far too much. This is a sign that he does push himself too much when he loses himself in a fight. He is only human, after all.

Pokémon Information
Affiliation: Trainer.
Starter: (Male) Riolo named Kouki. The reason I chose this Pokemon for Gon is not only because of its type, but because of the kind of Pokemon it is. Gon primarily fights with his fists in the later arcs of the series, instead of using his fishing rod that he carries with him from the beginning.

With his personality in mind, Gon not only makes friends easily, but he is loyal to those that he is friends with, and is one of the more energetic of the main characters. I feel that this may be one of the most fitting choices for his first Pokemon.
Password: Strawberry Marmalade

Samples
First Person Sample: Ah--it’s on, it’s on! [ Gon waves a bit at the device ] Hey, this is where I talk to everyone, right? It’s the same as the phone I got back at home. [ He scratches his head ] Though, it didn’t do as much as this...

[ He straightens up ] Ah-- I’m looking for my best friend, Killua. He was just traveling with me. I dunno where this might be, but he’s here, too. [ He says that with confidence, but then pauses, looking all the more excited to talk about something else-- ]

Everyone else got a Pokemon too, right? What kind does everyone have? Does everyone have a lot? I really want to meet all of them!

Third Person Sample: Settling in and learning the way the world worked in Johto ha been a bit of a challenge for the young boy. Though, one would think, after playing a game that resembled what Killua called an RPG, how much more difficult could becoming accustomed to a world with many friendly faces be? There were many differences from his own world--and so, it was difficult.

But, the prospect of making friends with different types of animals excited him--the thought of a new, great challenge did, as well. And who knew? Perhaps his father was here, too. But, if he had the chance, he would find a way to leave in order to pursue his father. That was still his goal, no matter what. But, to no avail. According to others here there was no real exit that others knew of. No, that would come to him.

It was true, however, he had been unsure of the idea of capturing different creatures. However, if they were happy, then it was fine, wasn’t it? Yes, the idea of others making friends with them made him all the more accepting of such an idea quite quickly.

And a journey to take on? It felt as though it was similar to being the kind of hunter he had taken a liking to - and that appealed to him all the more.

“Ah, good morning, Kouki.” He smiles brightly at his companion. Gon never had trouble making friends with different types of animals, and this Pokemon was no exception. “Are you ready to go?” He’s already adjusting his jacket, grabbing hold of his backpack. He didn’t keep his Pokemon in Pokeballs--instead, he preferred his starter out by his side just like this for the most part.

First and foremost, he would treat his companion as a friend.

“Alright!” He nods at his partner, beginning to run forward. “Let’s get breakfast first.”

And then they would continue on their journey. It was exciting, to say the least.
