APPLICATIONS!
Currently: Closed!
Route 29 has closed as of May 30th. For the continuation of the game, please visit [community profile] victory_road!

Applications will be normally checked during the weekend following the first and third Sunday of each month unless otherwise stated, and we will allow one application per person during one application cycle. Remember, the most characters one player can have at a time is currently set at five.

Applications received after 11:59 PM EST on Saturday of the first and third weekend of each month will be checked the following app weekend unless otherwise stated.

We now ask that potential applicants post their application in comments rather than linking. If their application contains explicit references to 'hard' spoilers (character death, unforeseen plot twists, big reveals, he was evil all along etc), players should put the application in their own journal or their character's journal and link it, making sure to mention the presence of spoilers within. For further clarification on our spoilers policy and whether or not your application needs to be linked, please check this page. Thank you for your cooperation!

The comment character limit on dreamwidth is 16,000 characters so apps no longer need to be split into multiple comments; however this is at players' discretion.

Please use the form below and post your application in comments rather than linking if you can. If you have any questions, feel free to ask either of the mods. You can reach us through emails, IMs, or PMs.

A reminder for those waiting to hear back, please don't be worried if we skip yours while going through them. It only means we needed a little more time to research!

school 2013 | namsoon go | two/two

[personal profile] lixu 2013-03-17 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
Personality:
“The first time I read the script for episode 1, I couldn’t grasp his character tangibly. [...] He has no expressions and no desire for friends; when Jong-Ho confronts him, he just gives him money or lets himself be beaten up, then suddenly Heungsoo helps him. No matter how you look at it, Namsoon is like a child with no emotions.” -- Lee Jongsuk, Namsoon’s actor

“If it was an accident, if it was your mistake. What does that change?”
“That’s why. Because nothing changes. Because this isn’t something that’ll change just by trying -- that’s why I’m sorry, you bastard. I’m so sorry that I wish I could just die.

When Namsoon is first introduced, he’s surprisingly passive for a main character, so reserved that he seems almost emotionless -- like he’s merely going through the motions of living, always taking the path of least resistance, never fighting back even as he’s being harrassed or beaten up. It’s not until later that the viewer realizes why this is: Namsoon’s mind is weighed down by guilt, so heavily that it consumes the rest of his feelings. In his own way, he seems to be trying to repent for his past actions. He doesn’t ever speak up for himself when he’s being wronged, although he’ll stand up for other people who are. He doesn’t ask others for help, but he gives others help when it seems like others need it. He seems to purposely shy away from people who want to be his friends, never letting people get too close, almost as if he’s scared of doing them same to them that he did to Heungsoo in the past.

In stark contrast to that, though, we see in flashbacks that Namsoon was totally different before the accident flashbacks: in the past, Namsoon was vivacious; he lived life freely and without worries about consequences. In a way, he kind of had that rebellious, bad boy charm to him; he laughed easily and didn’t follow the rules or anybody else’s expectations if he didn’t want to -- to the point where the possibility that he might get arrested by the police was a serious concern.

The fact that his personality does such a complete 180 shows exactly how important Heungsoo as a person is to Namsoon: there was (and still is) literally nothing that he fears more than being rejected by Heungsoo as a friend. Heungsoo is, to him, family and best friend and soulmate all wrapped up in one person -- the fact that he crushed Heungsoo’s dream and permanently injured him is something that he’ll never get over, and the main reason he dislikes using force. The only times he’s seen fighting in-series is to defend Heungsoo, and he repeatedly shows he would rather let himself get beaten up than fight against people he might have a chance of winning against.

“After figuring out his relationship with Heungsoo, he’ll be able to lay down a heavy burden, and hopefully live out his life with lots of happiness.” -- Lee Jongsuk

By the end of the series, Namsoon isn’t consumed with guilt like he was at the beginning, nor is he the bright, lively person he was before the accident -- he’s somewhere in-between. Making up with Heungsoo has allowed him to move on with his life: although he acknowledges that he’ll probably always feel sorry for what he did, he’s managed to get to the point where he lets himself feel other emotions and actively reach out to others as friends.

This includes rediscovering a bit of his sassy side! He tends to call things as it is in a blunt. matter-of-fact way, and expresses his annoyance with things in a pretty amusing way. He sometimes lightly teases/poke fun at people, but usually only people he knows well enough to be comfortable doing so.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

+ street-smart! He’s good at thinking on his feet.
+ he’s good at fighting and leading when he needs to, but he really prefers not to do those things anymore.
+ he’s especially kind to people who are in need.
+ he’s not easily ruffled or angered, and doesn’t respond to provocations -- in-series, the only time he’s seen getting mad or losing his cool is in flashbacks.
+ a hard worker: he’s been keeping up with part-time jobs for at least two years now.

- on the flip-side to being street-smart, he’s book dumb. To the point where when he actually tries to answer correctly on a test instead of filling out a column of A’s, he somehow does worse. He acknowledges that traditional education is not well-suited to him, and prefers to put his efforts elsewhere.
- reserved to the point of apathy at times. The only people he actively cares about are his friends, which isn’t to say he doesn’t care about others, just that he won’t go out of his way to help them if they aren’t asking for help.
- emotionally dependent on Heungsoo, although less so now than before.
- he helps himself last every time. It’s less about selflessness so much as it is him not valuing himself.

Samples
First Person Sample:

[ When the video feed clicks on, Namsoon looks rather ruffled up -- his clothes are all askew, and there are signs of a bruise beginning to purple on his right cheek. ]

I have a question. The Pokémon we’re partnered with... they aren’t supposed to attack you, right? [ there’s a pause, and then a sigh -- ] I don’t think it meant to, but it was very -- enthusiastic, when I let it out of its ball. They’re pretty strong, aren’t they? Even though they’re so small.

[ For a few moments, he seems to zone out, staring blankly and not saying anything. Rather abruptly, though, he snaps out of it after half a minute or so: ] Do they really enjoy fighting? And do we have to battle them?

Third Person Sample:

After the fourth person had approached him asking for a battle, repeating the same canned phrases over and over again as he’d attempted to turn them down, Namsoon finally accepted it: he was either going to have to battle or go bankrupt from running away so often. He didn’t mind living penniless -- he was used to that -- but he felt a twinge of guilt at forcing his new partner into a life of poverty along with him. Still, he didn’t feel great about making his new partner fight to avoid said life of poverty, either. There was something about it that didn’t feel right, and Namsoon couldn’t help but make a mental comparison dogfights when he thought of battling his Pokémon. To him, it seemed to come down to the lesser of two bads: go broke running away from battles, leaving him incapable of properly caring for his Meinfoo; or let his Meinfoo battle, and risk getting hurt.

Before going any further down Route 29, he decided to settle it once and for all -- he called his Meinfoo out of its PokéBall, sitting down to get on eye-to-eye level with it. “About fighting other Pokémon -- you’re sure you want to?” Namsoon asked, even though he wasn’t completely sure that the Pokémon could even understand him. “It doesn’t bother you at all?”

The Meinfoo, though, met his gaze squarely, making a few noises before nodding: a clear affirmation.

“I guess if it’s okay with you,” Namsoon said hesitantly, as if trying to convince himself. “Then we’ll battle the next Trainer that challenges us, I guess.”

His Meinfoo seemed pleased by the decision despite its Trainer’s reservations -- maybe even a little excited at finally getting to fight properly. With a rather enthusiastic cry, it bounded forward, leaving Namsoon to quickly get up and scramble after it before it ran too far into the tall grass.
