Personality
At first glance, Yumi is known to be cold and distant towards those she isn’t close to, maybe even intimidating to the younger students. While she’s not unfriendly and won’t mind talking to people, she doesn’t really open up to anyone she’s acquainted with, preferring to get to know the person before she can feel comfortable with them. This can mislead people into thinking she’s some kind of mysterious loner Goth, which some people may be into. However, once she gives you her trust, her softer and ‘more human’ side is shown. Yumi has shown to be quite kind and caring, as well as being very empathetic towards people. Being one of the older students at Kadic and being an older sibling, Yumi has a tendency to look after the younger students and the rest of the Lyoko warriors, especially during XANA’s attacks. In addition of being a big softie, Yumi is also respectful towards people—or at least adult figures—due to being raised with traditional Japanese values from her parents. Along with her intelligence, this has earned her the respect of most teachers and even considered the favorite of a few.
While Yumi may seem to be the perfect role model for people, her personality does have a bad side to it. She’s known to have a short temper, as well as a bad attitude that comes along her anger fits. Part of this relates to the fact that she’s only 14 years old and she still has some growing up to do before she can properly react to certain things. The other part could relate to the huge amounts of stress she has to deal with in her life such as education, her parents’ constant fighting and of course, risking her life daily to protect the world from XANA. What I’m trying to say here is that the times she reacted negatively to certain events could be times she would just blow up to people after holding in all the frustrations she has to deal with on a daily basis and that said events would be the final straw for her to remain calm and mature like she usually does.
Along with her bad temper and attitude, Yumi has a knack for shunning people away and being spiteful. Yumi hasn’t really made any friends, or at least close friends, outside her group of Lyoko Warriors. In fact, her only known outside friend that she continuously talks to is William, who was eventually invited to become a Lyoko warrior. Whenever one of her friends—notably Ulrich and William—screwed up big time, she basically gives them the silent treatment while she’s angry with them. In most cases, they’re generally understandable but she is cold when you pissed her off. She even renounced Hiroki as being her little brother just because he lost/ruined her diary! While she’ll be a huge jerk towards you for some time, she’ll eventually come to her senses and will forgive you because your friendship means that much to her. That is, if you’re still willing to be friends with her.
The existence of the Supercomputer has been a crucial part in the development of her personality. For her entire 9th and 10th grade year, Yumi had been taking part in the task of protecting the entire world from XANA. As she presumably had a normal life before the whole XANA fiasco, this was a HUGE change in her life and she had to adapt to this new responsibility in a short amount of time. This means she had to learn to be ready on her feet at all times as XANA has no respect for time with his attacks; she had to learn to think fast as anything can happen and possibly go wrong as well strategically as you can’t just jump into everything; she had to learn to be CAREFUL with her actions because any wrong move could endanger not only her life but anyone else’s. This counts both on Lyoko and in reality as if she were to fail on Lyoko, everything would fail and if she were to die in the real world…well, the Lyoko gang would be one less of a member. It doesn’t really help that Yumi is the designated victim after Jeremie and Aelita due to several reasons. How she’s capable of even living through a week of this happening is a mystery.
While she may not show it, Yumi—as well as the rest of Lyoko gang—are notably traumatized or at least greatly affected by XANA’s influence. She's faced death in the face much more than an average 14 year old would in their lifetime. If it counts, she's also experience dying on Lyoko. Due to XANA's evil and manipulative nature, she's also experienced some kind of emotional/psychological abuse when he tries to use Yumi's own feelings, notably her feelings for Ulrich, and emotions against her. However, while most kids her age might break down from all the stress and constant fear, Yumi hasn’t once shown any sign of any mental breakdown and actually tries to live life like a normal teenager whenever she isn’t in any danger, which shows some kind of strong emotionally stability. Of course stuff like her parents’ constant fighting and romance issues will bother her but seriously, anyone in her situation, minus XANA, will probably be troubled as well.
Her love life is also a defining moment in her character. While Yumi has some sort of charm that makes boys chase after her, it's really Ulrich and William that bring the worst and best out of her.
Ever since the two met during a Pencak Silat class, Ulrich is considered to be her closest guy friend and happens to be the guy she's currently in love with. Luckily for her, the boy's in love with her too. There has been moments he's brought out Yumi's good and nasty side with no difficulty, despite trying his best to stay on her good side. Due to their close relationship with each other and good chemistry, Ulrich and Yumi are quite effective together in battle, possibly the best combination out of the possible team combinations. As painfully obvious their relationship is to everyone, the two haven't really tried getting into a relationship together due to various of reasons such as cockblockers and complicated emotions that every teenager feels at some point. XANA is also a major reasons which drives Yumi to hold off on their advances until XANA is eliminated. Despite the two struggling to keep their inner feelings down to a certain level, Yumi and Ulrich's relationship hasn't shown any sign of damage and the two still continue to help out with each other as much as they can because that's what friends do.
Yumi's relationship with William, while troublesome, is pretty straightforward. William feels strongly for Yumi but Yumi obviously just wants to be friends with the boy. While William could respect this and just continue on being friends with Yumi, he just keeps on trying to win her heart, much to her dismay. There have been occasions he's tried to make a move on Yumi and even stalked her to her house late at night which led to the girl not being too much a fan of the boy as she finds his "second rate Casanova act" sickening. This has also led to distrust towards William as shown by her vote of allowing William to become a Lyoko Warrior. After he gets possessed by XANA due to his recklessness, while Yumi obviously wants to save him, any trust she had for him is completely shattered to the point of shunning him away after he's rescued, still blaming him for his past actions.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
+Responsible/Reliable: Being a notable Lyoko warrior, a model student and an older sister both figuratively and literally, the concept of responsibility is one Yumi is very familiar to. If there's something you're going to expect this girl to do, you can guaranteed she'll do it and if she doesn't meet your demands, she'll take full responsibility for her failure as well (though she may not like it)
+Mature: Despite being only 14 years old, Yumi is very mature for her age. She currently holds the title of being the 'Big Sis" of the gang and is usually the one who has to look after everyone and keeping them out of trouble. Insults and snarky remarks don't really faze the girl either unless they're directed towards a sensitive topic like her heritage. She is notably emotionally stronger than most of the younger students to a certain extent.
+Physically Fit: Being a full time Lyoko warrior requires her to at least have some kind of physical ability. She is athletic to a degree, currently holding the shortest time record at Kadic, She's also able to perform gymnastic abilities and is a practicer of Pencak Silat, occasionally sparring with Ulrich. Both skills help her out against the monsters during on missions.
+Intelligent: Despite the XANA-related missions taking up most of her time, Yumi is somehow able to keep up good grades in school and is the person after Jeremie and Aelita able to use the Supercomputer to some degree. While she's not an expert like the other two, she's able to use it much more than Ulrich and Odd are able to. Being able to come up with excuses and strategies on the spot might mean something too.
+Warm Nature: Despite her harsh and anti-social appearance, Yumi can be very caring and kind to a degree. She's willing to help out if you're in trouble even if you're just a stranger. If you're like her best friend, you can also expect her to be quite loyal and willing to stick up for you. She tends to be respectful towards her elders as well.
-/+Cautious: While being cautious is not really a terrible thing, a year or two of XANA attacks do have a noticeable effect on how she handles some things. Whether if its negative or positive can go either way.
-/+Secretive: This girl knows how to keep a secret well. Not only is she secret about her emotions and feelings, she's notably determined in keeping XANA a secret, no matter who she talks to. Downfall to this is that don't expect her to open up so easily, especially if you don't know her well enough. If you want her background, expect he to just shrug it off.
-Short tempered: While Yumi is calm most of the time, she does get quite angry or at least irritable when her buttons are pushed. A notable pet peeve is when people confuse her for being Chinese or some other Asian nationality, to which she responds very angrily about. Also if you're a stalker who's into Yumi, good luck trying to just be friends with her.
-Spiteful: Yumi can get quite mean whenever she's not happy with you. Most tactic used is the silent treatment but she's not above getting revenge whenever someone has done her wrong like giving the newsletter team an embarrassing photo of a victim when an embarrassing photo of her's was published.
-Introverted: Yumi's friendly but not the type to go up and talk to people. It's not to a degree where she's shy but she just tends to mind her own business unless it concerns her. She'd rather wait before opening up to people.
-Young: As much of an adult Yumi may act like, she's still 14 years old. No matter how mature she may be, this makes her prone to the painful aspects of teenage years that are to come in the near future, as well as her emotional stability.
-Romance Issues: She's in a love triangle where two guys are in love with her. She's in love with one of them but refuses to be in a relationship with as of now to prevent future conflict while she wants to just be friends with the other guy but he just won't leave her alone, going complete stalker on her. She isn't the person to really go to for relationship advice when she can't figure out her own problems. This also makes her not a possible candidate for romantic relationships. Sorry guys.
-Traumatized: XANA has definitely changed this girl's life with all the stress, constant danger and possible death chances she put on this girl, her friends and family. It's kind of hard hearing a sudden noise and go crazy and prepared to stand your ground right after the big bad you've been fighting for two years is gone.
-Designated Victim: I just wanted to mention this. Yumi was prone to LOTS of violence from XANA compared to everyone else in the gang. This was possibly due to being the greatest threat after Jeremie and Aelita, isolated due to being the only one living off campus and possible being the only one easily emotionally played with. She has experienced much more near-death experiences out of the gang, as well as targeted attacks. Her status might be in effect even here in Johto despite no XANA involvement.

First Person Sample:
[Hello whoever's in New Berk Town. Today, you'll be introduced to a new person today. Here is a young teenage girl, constantly pacing back and worth as if it's going to help her figure just where is she. A Meditite was nearby, watching the troubled girl worrying about her own business.]
JEREMIE! [She was practically screaming into the air, attracting the confused looks on anyone nearby.] Jeremie, can you hear me?
....Jeremie, please answer me. [Her voice was beginning to soften, almost sounding desperate for a response.] Anyone! Is anyone there? Please...
[After some time and no response from any of her friends, Yumi leaned against a tree, biting her nails out of hysteria. This was not good. This was not good at all. Was this another of XANA's schemes? Separating her from her friends by putting her into some other virtual world? It wouldn't be a surprise considering the fact he's already done this multiple times already. He could be a little more original at least.]
DAMN IT! [Her frustration level reaching its maximum point, Yumi angrily punched the tree, having nothing else to do to vent out her anger. Out of impulse, the teenage girl kept on punching the tree a few more times before collapsing on her knees. She didn't care about the pain or the blood dripping down her knuckles.There were more things to worry about after all. Much more things.]
Third Person Sample
After a week or two being in this place, Yumi's convinced that she was transported into some kind of virtual Pokemon game. Any hope of Jeremie or Aelita figuring out how to get her out of this mess is slim to none.
While Yumi wasn't a gamer girl, she's remembered playing Pokemon Blue when she was a little girl. She'd always choose Bulbasaur for her starter because Bulbasaurs were cool. Except for a selective few, she didn't pay too much attention to any other pokemon. For example, she has no idea just what the hell her starter was, only that it wasn't Squirtle, Charmender or Bulbasaur. It was blue and white and almost looked like a monkey. It had the conical head shape that reminded her of her dear friend Odd except it lacked the purple mark on its conical head part.
Not to mention how much of annoyance he was, oh dear god. He was just as annoying as Odd was. Hiroki even!
She liked it in the games that she got to choose which one she wanted the most compared to being stuck with a pokemon you don't even know about. She was even considering trading with another newbie because the dang thing kind of creeped her out with its big eyes and constant staring. Not to mention the constant screeching and clinging to her head. It was like he was Hiroki and Odd incarnated. Terrific.
It was kind of nice though. At least she had something that reminded her of home.
SCREEEEEE
Right when that thought went into her head, the small pokemon let out another screech for no apparent reason, prompting the Japanese girl to cover her ears to drown out the sound. It seems he's picked up Yumi's annoyance at his noises and takes joy in annoying his trainer, much to her dismay. Yup, he was just like Hiroki. All he needs now is a black wig and a game console in his hands and he's all set.
