Answer me 1997 wiki entry
There isn’t really a wiki page that focuses on Joonhee’s story since he’s a supporting character but I’ll give a summary of what is available from canon (things that are stated or can be assumed), if you need more please let me know.
Joonhee meets Yoonjae when he enters high school, nothing before that is ever shown but given that this is a coming of age, slice of life, romance it can be assumed that everything is fairly normal. He’s born in Busan and grows up in a large and tight knit family (when his friends all have plans with friends or their bf/gf after final exams in their final year of high school Joonhee instead is expected to go home and eat with his family).
Joonhee is the youngest of 9 siblings, he has eight older sisters and the youngest of his sisters is his older twin. He’s only shown interacting with his own family twice in the drama with his 6th eldest and 7th eldest sisters (who are also twins). They are shown to be frank and dominating, the kind of older siblings that nag and tease their youngest. It’s something Joonhee is used to and even if he complains about it he does not resent it, he has a healthy fear of his older sisters but also a genuine love for them (he tells Yoonjae that though his sister speaks in a sharp way she’s a good person). Though he is never shown with his twin sister he does indirectly compare it to the relationship between two of his friends, saying that though they fight they always go home together, that they’re close and that when they’re together it’s comfortable and nice. From that it’s possible to say that Joonhee’s relationship with his twin is close and comfortable, even though she doesn’t have a physical presence in the show I assume that their relationship is something that comes easily to Joonhee and that it’s something he treasures.
First grade of high school (equivalent to 10th grade in the American schooling system) is the first look the series gives of Joonhee and it’s brief, only a flashback of his first time meeting Yoonjae who becomes his best friend and first love. Joonhee is a good student, consistently placing second overall in his grade (first in his class when he’s not in the same class as Yoonjae). Most of the series covers his final year of high school and the relationship of his group of friends.
Early on in the year he tells Shiwon (his best female friend and the girl that Yoonjae likes) that he likes Yoonjae. This is really important because it’s probably the first time Joonhee has explicitly told anyone. Until this point the only way he’s been able to express his feelings is through anonymous messages left on Yoonjae’s beeper, leaving him love songs under the name “1004” (his birthday and spoken in korean as cheon-sa meaning angel).
Sharing the secret leads them to grow closer, Joonhee is already someone that gets along with girls well but Shiwon becomes the only person that knows about his biggest secret and they begin to talk together and hang out together more (which leads to Yoonjae getting jealous). Yoonjae repeatedly states that Joonhee likes Shiwon when the two are talking and Joonhee does not deny it each time until near the end of the year. Joonhee finally clears it up as they talk about why Yoonjae likes Shiwon and finally tells Yoonjae that he doesn’t feel that way towards her when he asks Joonhee why he likes Shiwon, instead telling him that he likes someone else. When Yoonjae asks him again who he likes Joonhee finally confesses honestly but Yoonjae after a long moment concludes that he’s joking, they laugh it off and basically nothing changes. The following voice over plays at the end of the scene:
“The reason I like you? Because it’s you. Just you. It’s the only reason. I wish I knew. Then I could figure out how to stop liking you. If I can’t avoid it, I only want one thing… To stay as a friend who doesn’t change. For heartache. For love.”
The two move to Seoul after high school to attend university together, they are roommates for the whole time until 2005 when Joonhee moves out. In 2005 Joonhee is a first year medical intern at a hospital, none of his time in university is shown. Most likely it consisted of Joonhee working hard, getting stressed, leaving a good impression on his seniors and teachers, and just medical school happening normally.
At this point Yoonjae who has confessed to Shiwon and been rejected has cut off contact with her but Joonhee has kept in touch (she calls him in front of Yoonjae when the two meet up again after 6/7 years). One of their friend’s father dies and they all go back to Busan to attend the funeral. Aware of the tension between Shiwon and Yoonjae Joonhee purposely leaves the two alone. On the second trip to Busan he lies and says he can’t make it due to work so that the two drive to Busan alone. It’s also while the two are away that he asks his senior (an unnamed specialist at the hospital) about a vacancy in his apartment and decides to move out.
Later Shiwon is at the hospital (as someone’s guardian not admitted to the hospital) where she overhears his plans to move out. the two go to talk and Shiwon tells Joonhee about her feelings for Yoonjae. She apologises to him and he tells her he knew she liked Yoonjae before she realised it herself. She begins to understand how painful it’s been for him and he says that he needs to move on. Yoonjae overhears and finally realises Joonhee’s feelings for him.
They spend some time not changing at all and Joonhee avoids talking about moving out for as long as humanly possible. He also encourages Yoonjae to act on his feelings for Shiwon especially now that they both know it’s mutual. When Joonhee finally tells Yoonjae he’s moving out he lies that the hospital made new rules that interns had to live with specialists for teamwork reasons. Yoonjae lets him lie and tells Joonhee he’s not sad that he’s moving out because they’ll always be a part of each other’s lives, that even if Joonhee tried to get rid of him he’d follow him everywhere.
Shiwon and Yoonjae get together and not much is said about Joonhee after he moves out. Yoonjae mentions that he went to visit Joonhee’s new place but he presumably never tells Joonhee that he is aware of his feelings because he doesn’t want their friendship to change.
The next that is seen of Joonhee is the 2012 reunion that is the “present” timeline of the series (the entire drama is told through juggling the present timeline and flashbacks). He says zero about his current life, or at least none of it is shown. The one glance into his current life is as they depart, Joonhee tells Yoonjae and Shiwon (now married with kids) that he doesn’t need a ride because someone’s picking him up. It is implied that this someone is Joonhee’s lover but never stated and the person is never shown.
Personality: Joonhee is someone who is considered delicate and sensitive, his best friend even says once that Joonhee behaves like a girl. He isn’t someone who is particularly delicate emotionally or physically though. He’s someone that expresses himself in more subtle ways and pays close attention to the things around him, he’s calm and not prone to outbursts that are somewhat expected of teenagers and doesn’t show the kind of fickle affection that others his age might.
Joonhee is the kind of person that is able to understand someone’s feelings even if they don’t yet because he’s sensitive and perceptive to the changes around him. It doesn’t mean this particularly distresses him, he notices it and he’s concerned because he’s a good friend. He’s the kind of guy girls can bring home to mom because moms love him, he’s that guy that actually thinks before opening his mouth and always has a sincere compliment on hand. He doesn’t fit into the narrow image of a man’s man and he doesn’t mind, he never shows any self-consciousness in regards to being seen as having a feminine disposition. It’s obvious that he’s a good kid that studies hard, pays his respect to his elders, and takes care of the people around him.
His relationships with his peers are important to him, even after graduating it’s obvious he keeps in touch with all of them but his friendship with Yoonjae is probably what he treasures most. Part of it is fueled by the idealistic first love. His feelings of romantic love drive him to stay close to Yoonjae just for the sake of being close to the person he loves but his feelings of friendship are just as strong because in the end that is what makes him push Yoonjae and Shiwon together in spite of his own romantic feelings. To Joonhee their friendship is the most important because he never hopes for Yoonjae to return his feelings, he only thinks that if he can’t change his own feelings he wants to remain friends no matter what.
As well as Joonhee gets along with his friends he isn’t the kind of person that necessarily makes friends easily. He tends to give a very good impression to people and he’s kind so people warm up to him but Joonhee doesn’t tend to talk about himself. Even when he tells Shiwon about his feelings for Yoonjae they’re never shown talking about it aside from an occasional teasing comment, this is likely at least in part because he has feelings for another male and it’s not something that’s easy to talk about even with a friend that has accepted the fact. But even after being friends for more than two years none of them were aware that he had eight older sisters and that one of them was his twin sister. Joonhee is the kind of person that would rather let someone else talk rather than do so himself. When he does speak at length it’s usually because he thinks it needs to be said like when he encourages Yoonjae to act on his feelings for Shiwon in spite of the things between them. It’s great for his friends because he’s attentive and considerate of their feelings but as Joonhee confesses himself he can understand the feelings of others but it’s much more difficult to understand his own feelings.
