APPLICATIONS!
Currently: Closed!
Route 29 has closed as of May 30th. For the continuation of the game, please visit [community profile] victory_road!

Applications will be normally checked during the weekend following the first and third Sunday of each month unless otherwise stated, and we will allow one application per person during one application cycle. Remember, the most characters one player can have at a time is currently set at five.

Applications received after 11:59 PM EST on Saturday of the first and third weekend of each month will be checked the following app weekend unless otherwise stated.

We now ask that potential applicants post their application in comments rather than linking. If their application contains explicit references to 'hard' spoilers (character death, unforeseen plot twists, big reveals, he was evil all along etc), players should put the application in their own journal or their character's journal and link it, making sure to mention the presence of spoilers within. For further clarification on our spoilers policy and whether or not your application needs to be linked, please check this page. Thank you for your cooperation!

The comment character limit on dreamwidth is 16,000 characters so apps no longer need to be split into multiple comments; however this is at players' discretion.

Please use the form below and post your application in comments rather than linking if you can. If you have any questions, feel free to ask either of the mods. You can reach us through emails, IMs, or PMs.

A reminder for those waiting to hear back, please don't be worried if we skip yours while going through them. It only means we needed a little more time to research!

Nico Robin 2/2

[personal profile] thetruehistorian 2012-05-05 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality: Robin's personality has actually evolved quite a bit over the course of the series. When we first meet her, she's sinister and sneaky, cocky, and simply aggravating. This can be credited to the double life she was leading at the time, her outward actions and motivations being seen through the lens of her title as Vice-President of Baroque Works; the villain's head henchwoman. But, even while she's still a part of that organization, we begin to learn that "Miss All-Sunday" is not who she appears to be. Over the course of her adventure with the Strawhat Pirates, we learn that Robin, while often standoffish or severe, is actually an involved, deeply caring individual. Her methods of expressing fondness can easily be classified as strange, but the crew has come to accept and appreciate her quirks, and now will actually call her out on them from time to time.

Robin is, at present, a much softer woman than she once was. She is more openly opinionated, sharing more of her thoughts and feelings with the world than before. While still comparatively quiet, she no longer simply stares blank faced at what happens around her, opting instead to briefly comment on circumstances. Her facial expressions have become more lively since being reunited with her crew as well. She is more relaxed and enthusiastic than she used to be, exuding an unspoken confidence in herself, her abilities, and those of her nakama. I believe a key turning point for Robin was the moment she realized that her desire to become stronger for Luffy was the first time she'd ever wanted to change herself for someone else's benefit, and it affected her whole character. Still, there is much about Robin that remains unchanged. She still won't hesitate to point out morbid possibilities, though now she often does so with a playful smile. She is still grim and succinct in battle, still passionate about pursuing the things she feels are important.

Robin has a strong sense of "nakama"- the family you choose rather than the family that's given to you by birth. The Strawhat Pirates are the only family she's known, the Thousand Sunny (their ship) the only home she needs. She will stop at nothing to keep them safe. She also feels a strong responsibility to humanity- particularly those who have passed on, and can no longer tell their story to the world. Everyone has something to offer, some lesson they learned or that can be learned from studying their life, and Robin knows that those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. The loss of her people under the relentless barrage of a Buster Call drove this concept home to her, and it is a lesson she has not forgotten. She keeps in constant remembrance that points on a map represent more than just the curve of an island's shore or the names of city streets.

Strengths/Weaknesses: Robin possesses strength in a number of areas, and even without her Devil's Fruit Ability, she makes a powerful foe. She is clever, intuitive, intelligent, a quick learner, and not prone to losing her focus. Her memory serves her well, and she knows at least a little bit about a wide variety of topics. She's learned to use her surroundings to her advantage, whether she needs to quietly disappear in an instant or perhaps acquire certain objects otherwise out of her reach, she's certain to find a way to succeed. If needed, she picks up quickly on the mannerisms and jargon of certain crowds in order to blend in, and won't hesitate to assume (or allow others to assume on her behalf) a different persona in order to allay suspicion. At times, this can work against her, though, as those who come to know this aspect of her character might mistakenly presume that she is not one to be trusted. Robin is physically strong in many ways, but by no means a powerhouse. Stripped of her Ability, she will be particularly prone to physical weaknesses she often countered through the use of many limbs. She cannot swim. But, while her weakness tends toward the muscular, her greatest fears tend to the emotional. She can, and has for many years, looked after herself, but she hates being alone. She desires love and acceptance from others, if only just a few, and would rather see the world destroyed than face the possibility of someone who cared for her turning away. She's been known to experience symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, though her triggers are few and specific, and not likely to be experienced in a world other than her own.

Samples
First Person Sample:

We've finally made it to town, just in the nick of time. My pokemon were almost completely spent, and my stash of berries and potions was alarmingly sparse. I don't think I've ever been so glad to see the rust-orange roof of a PokeCenter in all of my stay here in Johto.

An interesting bit of information crossed my path recently. Apparently Pokemon are classified as "inedible". It is said that their meat is too tough, or stringy,- or both?- for human consumption. Even wild Pokemon rarely feast on the flesh of another, except in rare instances. With this in mind, I can't help but look dubiously upon the rows of slaughtered meat here in this PokeMart. If Pokemon are unfit, and there are no signs of other livestock... where has it come from?

Does this perhaps explain the disproportionate number of cemeteries in the area? It struck me as odd that there would be so few. And could this be evidence of a cultural innovation to help control the level of Ghost-type Pokemon in the world? If so, why would there not be ceremonies revolving around the consummation of a loved one's remains? This society shows none of the expected behaviors of a cannibalistic culture.

It's a shame the foremost scholars of this world all gravitate around the mysteries of Pokemon, when there are so many about the very people they live amongst, and whose heritage they've been born with.

Third Person Sample:

Robin followed the directions she'd been given, then studied the building with a critical eye. It didn't seem at all different from any of the other nondescript buildings in this world- it didn't even feature a different colored roof, which seemed to be the main method of differentiation. Still, she supposed outward appearances didn't always amount to much, considering that the greatest trove of knowledge in her world had been a giant tree. A small smile touched the corners of her lips. How odd, she thought, that the professors in this world would each be named after a tree; and the professor in my world, who worked in a tree, would be named after grass.

She tapped politely on Professor Elm's door, and waited. No sound of movement reached her ears, and she knocked a bit harder. After a moment, she took a step back and gave the building a closer look. The shades were drawn in the windows, and covered in dust. There were a few flowers planted along the wall, and she had assumed they were withered because of the cold. She saw now that they had died back years before. A shot of adrenaline wound through her veins. It seemed she'd stumbled into an ambush, though she hadn't triggered the trap quite yet.

Robin circled the building, keeping close to the wall (stucco crumbling in places from neglect, badly in need of an updated paint job- how could she not have seen it sooner?) and ducking under the eaves of the windows to avoid detection. She quietly pulled a Pokeball from her pocket, pressed the pre-release button to increase its size. If Team Rocket intended to waylay her, she wanted to make sure they'd have a hard time of it.

Just as she was about to poke her head around the corner, the door she'd knocked on opened with a creak. Robin turned, dropping into a defensive position, her eyes narrowed and focused on the person in the doorway. He rubbed his head as he looked down the street toward town. Robin noticed he looked as disheveled as the building. At last, he turned toward her, and almost leapt off his doorstep in surprise.

"Ack! I didn't see you there!" he exclaimed. Robin straightened, shrunk her 'ball and stashed it in its pocket.

"Professor Elm, I presume?" still wary, she extended her hand in greeting.

The man adjusted his glasses, as if he needed a moment to think about it. "Ah, yes. That's me. I apologize for the state of the house. I can get a little... ah... focused."

Robin raised an eyebrow, then smiled. She'd heard Professor Elm was a bit of a scatterbrain, but she hadn't anticipated such a quirk to be taken to this extreme. As such, she declined to comment any further on the subject.

"I have some questions for you," she said. "We should talk inside."
