Kurow-specific
I avoided putting in direct hard spoilers as best I could, but some indirect references were unavoidable, so please be aware of that.
Personality: At first glance, Kurow is the kind of kid who likes to live life to the fullest – as he says when he introduces himself to Chibiterasu, “having a good time’s my game”. He’s laid back and casual, uses a lot of unusual (for the setting) slang when he talks (calling people ‘dude’, using ‘like’ everywhere, describing things as ‘awesome’, using a lot of contractions, etc.) and has a habit of twirling his flute for no reason. Especially near the beginning of the game, he comes off as somewhat arrogant and cocky – he is totally awesome, the coolest kid around, and everyone obviously wants to know everything about him, but sorry, he won’t tell you more unless he feels like it. Still, he likes helping out people who need it, and he has a soft spot for pretty girls – he’s a bit of a flirt when he wants to be, especially with a certain lady scholar.
Dig a little deeper and get to know him a little better, though, and you’ll find that a lot of his self-assured attitude is a mask. Oh, it’s not like he’s some kind of nervous wreck or anything at his core, but he does have a lot of insecurity that he covers up, ignores, and only rarely ever actually addresses. For one thing, he’s lonely – he’d wandered the world by himself for the longest time before he met Chibi, and has always been very aware of how different he is from everyone else, being from the Moon Tribe and all, so it’s always been hard for him to actually make friends. So he overcompensates by convincing himself (and implying to everyone he meets) that he’s just that awesome that he’s the one who decides who he lets hang out with him, even though what he’d really like is to just have friends like a normal kid. He’s somewhat selfish and more than somewhat cowardly – he looks out for his own interests above all others, and is terrified of the possibility that the mysterious mission he’s been assigned might call for him to sacrifice himself or something equally drastic. And when he’s scared of doing something, he will go out of his way to find some way, any way, to avoid it, no matter what it means for anyone else. He truly feels guilty about that, too, and dislikes that part of himself – he does, genuinely, want to help people out. It’s just, if it comes at cost to himself, that’s where he starts to falter.
He also has a few issues with self-identity that developed when he finally learned what his mission actually was, but those are mostly settled at this point, and he is mostly confident that, if nothing else, his experiences are his own, no one else’s, and those are what make him who he is. (Though, the topic of a certain man named Waka is still a bit of a touchy subject.)
And once you dig down all the way to Kurow’s core, he really is just a kid. A good kid who wants to have fun and for everyone to be happy, and who may have been forced to grow up a little too fast and take on more responsibility than he was really ready to handle.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths: Kurow is very good at keeping a cool head in tough situations, or at least the illusion of one. Even when something manages to shake him – and seriously, that takes a lot – he always puts up a brave face and keeps going despite it. He’s rather intelligent, and has a clever streak to him as well.
In terms of life skills, he survived by himself for two weeks after his ship crashed on Nippon, so it can naturally be assumed that he knows the basics of surviving in the wild at the very least – basic cooking, shelter-making, what weeds you can eat or not, etcetera. Thanks to his Moon Tribe background, he’s pretty good with technology, and has some background in hacking (as demonstrated during the battle with King Fury and Daidarabotchi). He’s got some talent on the flute, and can usually even weaponize said flute-playing (though this counts as magic and therefore is blocked in Johto). He’s also pretty handy with a double-bladed laser sword, which probably could be applied to other similar-shaped weapons, like light-weight staves and the like. Usually he would be capable of self-levitation (and flight, with some Wings), but again, that’s blocked in Johto.
In some ways, his small size can also count as a strength, as he can get into places larger people can’t, and can ride smaller Pokémon than most. In canon, he rides a wolf puppy with no problems, and a Growlithe, for example, would be about the same size as Chibi, really.
Weaknesses: Just because he keeps a cool expression doesn’t mean that Kurow never gets scared. In fact, he really is a bit of a coward, deep down. And when he gets scared of something, he tends to go out of his way to avoid it in any way possible, even going to drastic measures if he feels it’s needed. Sure, his resolve what’s important is stronger in the end, but that doesn’t change that this tendency is there.
On a tangential note, he’s also aquaphobic and can’t swim, so no Surfing for him! Boats are fine, though.
He’s somewhat oblivious to the opinions of others at times, and therefore has difficulty realizing when he’s annoying other people – and yes, he can be rather annoying, not gonna lie. Partially related, he’s not very good at making friends, or realizing when he has managed to do so – Chibi was his first, and he only really realized the true scope of that at the end.
Physically, his small size means that reaching high places will be difficult for him, especially because his levitation was eaten by Arceus, so he doesn’t have that extra boost. Speaking of, he’s very used to levitating everywhere he needs to go, and not so used to walking on his own two feet. It’s not that he can’t, but it will take some getting used to, and some time to build stamina.

[The camera shifts around a little bit as Kurow makes some final adjustments to its position – perhaps he’s setting it on a table or something. Soon enough, though, he’s satisfied with its position and steps back, away from the camera.]
So like, you know how I found that egg under the bed a while back? You know, the one that just showed up out of nowhere?
[By this point, he’s far enough out of the way that the video showcases the egg in question, sitting there on the bed. There’s a crack at the top, and it seems to be getting slightly bigger every second. Kurow’s Growlithe is standing on the sheets, sniffing it curiously, and by at this point, Kurow peeks up from the other side of the bed, leaning on the mattress from the other side so that he’s at eye-level with the egg.]
Well, I think it’s hatching now! Been wondering how long it’d take, but guess today’s the day it picked!
So, like, what d’you think’ll come out, girl?
[“Grow!” The Growlithe barks. She doesn’t know, but this is very exciting.
And suddenly, the egg glows white, and it hatches completely!]
…Whoa. Dude, I didn’t know those came out of eggs too! I thought it was just birds that did that.
Third Person Sample: “Pokémon, huh…” Kurow muttered to himself as he flipped through the Trainer Handbook in the bag he had been given. He had to say, he hadn’t been expecting anything like this. Oh, it sounded fun, no question about that, but he’d been expecting something a bit less…
…well, if he were truly honest, he hadn’t really been expecting anything at all…
Well, no point being all negative. This sounded like it could be a lot of fun, really, even if his best friend wasn’t here with him. Traveling around, catching and training creatures called Pokémon, working together with them to collect badges from gym leaders all over the place? How cool was that?
Though, the whole not being able to float thing was a bit of a drag. He’d have to get used to actually having to walk wherever he wanted to go.
Deciding that he’d look through the book further later if he felt like it, Kurow perused the rest of the items in the bag. Soap and cleaning stuff, boring but probably useful. A bento and trail mix… well, food was important, but if the road to the next town – Cherrygrove, the map in the book had said – was more than a day or so long, it probably wouldn’t be enough. There was a change of clothes in there, but it was really boring, so he doubted he’d wear it often, thanks all the same. The Pokégear looked like a cool piece of technology, though. He’d have to look into exactly what he could do with it.
And then there were the Pokéballs. These were what he was supposed to catch Pokémon with, right? Well, he wasn’t sure how they were supposed to fit in one of those unless they were, like, really tiny or something, but he’d find out soon enough, right? Especially since he got to start with one for free.
He held the ball that held his starter in his hand and smiled. “Well, might as well properly meet, right? Come on out!” And he tossed it into the air.
“Grow!” Out of the ball appeared a Growlithe, who barked happily and looked up at him expectantly.
And awesomely enough, his partner in this strange new world was once again a puppy. This was just getting better and better.
“So like, you don’t look as smart as he was – ” the Growlithe tilted her head at this accusation – “but you’ll do. Looks like you’ll be traveling with me for a while.”
It wasn’t anything he had ever expected, but he wasn’t going to complain.
