Character Name: Rose Quartz Series: Steven Universe Timeline: Post 2x12 - We Need to Talk Canon Resource Links:Rose | Steven Universe
Personality: If you’re looking for a dedicated, caring and loving leader, you’re probably looking for Rose Quartz: the leader of the rebellion against Homeworld to protect Earth thousands of years before the current timeline of the show, who was loved deeply by those who followed her. Every single time that one of the Gems talks about her, they refer to Rose as someone who cared deeply for others, who “felt really sorry when they were hurt”, who was able to heal others through her tears and was an amazing tactician (good enough to be able to win the war against Homeworld), albeit at the cost of having her entire army reduced to just 4 Gems, counting herself. She was a strong fighter, skilled not only in the use of her own weapon, a shield, but also a secondary one, the sword, which completely differs to what one would think is the nature of her powers since all her natural abilities are more defensive (shield) and supportive (healing tears), yet she was able to take an aggressive stance whenever the situation calls for it. Despite her importance as a leader, she refused to stay in a safe place during battle and headed with no hesitation to the heat of the battle because as the leader of the rebellion that’s where she felt she had to be. After the rebellion was won, she fell in love with a human, Greg, andwent as far as to shapeshift a womb to be able to have a son with him, Steven. But since both of them couldn’t exist, she had to give up herself in order for her son to be born, showing her self-sacrificing love. She worked hard in order to attempt to restore the corrupted Gems that had lost themselves after the war because they were her allies and friends but sadly she made no progress.
As any good leader would, Rose was a person who kept a lot of secrets. Even to Pearl, who thought of herself as the one closest to her. She is said to have done this to keep others safe but at the same time that means that she was a Gem surrounded in mystery. What is interesting is that others were well aware that she kept secrets and they were okay with it, meaning that there is a chance that she explained to them that there were certain things that they were better off not knowing. Rose also made sure that those who participated in the rebellion knew what they were getting into and that they were 100% okay with either the possibility of dying or never going back to their homes. She was the kind of leader that wanted that her people knew these things and, when she spoke about it with Pearl, she left it clear that there would be no hard feelings if anyone decided to not join her rebellion as she was well aware that it was a very risky move.
While Rose’s actual appearances on the show have been scarce and surrounded by her idealized view from those she used to lead, she was actually been shown to be much more complex than that. She thought and spoke of humans in a manner that’s familiar to how someone treats their pets during “We Need to Talk”, mentioned on her song with Greg how she liked seeing them “play” and how she liked “playing along”, even going as far as laughing right in front of him when he later asked if she respected him and thinking he was hilarious for bringing something like that up. Thanks to Pearl’s comment and Amethyst saying that “this one is her favorite” when talking about Greg, it can be safely assumed that Mr. Universe hadn’t been the first human that Rose had brought over to “play” with over the thousands of years that she and the fellow Crystal Gems have lived on Earth. It leaves no doubt that she feels some superiority when compared to a human and that she wanted to keep the planed safe mostly because of her interest on the way humans behaved and acted during their awfully short lifespans. She certainly lacked the knowledge to understand that the way she acted was painful for him and made him feel like he didn’t care about him at all. However it is also worth mentioning that her talk with Greg during the end of “We Need to Talk” made her understand how little she understood humans and if she really cared about Greg, she had to start changing her way when it came to his race, since the points he brought up left her incredibly confused. While it is an improvement, at this point in canon she still has a lot to go through before she understands and admires humans the way she does when she talks about them during her video on “Lion 3: Straight to Video”.
Strengths/Weaknesses: ✓Leadership: Rose is a talented leader, which means she can keep her head cold during extreme situations to be able to make good decisions. Her strategies were praised by Homeworld Gems, her enemies, so they must have been admirable. Her quick thinking was also the reason why herself, Garnet and Pearl managed to survive the war.
✓Kindness: Multiple times Rose has shown that she is capable of great love. She cares deeply for those around her and she was even willing to make a fountain filled with her tears to heal gems without her actually needing to be there. She went out of her way to attempt to heal corrupted gems and saw beauty in every living thing.
✗Secretive: She kept way too many secrets, so it’s impossible to know whether she’s being 100% honest or not.
✗Lack of knowledge about humans: She doesn’t understand them at all and without realizing she might hurt their feelings.
✗Having to adapt to being a human: Since the setting will turn her into one, Rose will have to deal with all the basic necessities that humans have and Gems don’t: such as sleeping, eating, body functions, etc.
