Personality:
Steven is an amiable, goofy kid. He sees the good in everyone and everything, and seems to believe that everyone can change for the better, even when they very clearly can or will not. Steven has a very protective personality, even having powers that center solely around his desire to protect and care for the people he loves (which includes summoning shields and having healing abilities). While Steven enjoys goofing off and having a good time, he's also begun to accept the fact that he has responsibilities he has to adhere to, as a member of the Crystal Gems; however, since he's only a kid, the weight of this responsibility sometimes causes him to lash out and worry that he isn't good enough or that he's going to cause other people harm (shown in "Full Disclosure", when he attempts to cut off his best friend Connie after seeing how poorly his father reacted to realizing Steven could have been killed on his last mission). He has somewhat of a fragile ego, constantly worried that the Gems don't trust him to be a part of the team, or that they're babying him, and that they don't trust him. This has caused real-world repercussions (such as some of his powers failing due to lack of self-confidence) and is something that he's currently working on. When he does feel confident, though, he's at his best, proving to be resourceful and heroic in times of need. His relationship with the other Crystal Gems is strong, but somewhat strained as of late due to surfacing issues surrounding Steven's mother, Rose Quartz, and the impending threat of hostile Gems that want to use earth for their own means.
Steven is relentlessly optimistic. He's the last to give up on anyone and anything, and will always see the good side of people and situations, no matter how dire. He's the only one to try and reason with the hostile but lonely Gem Lapis Lazuli, and attempts to do the same with invading Gem Peridot, despite Peridot showing no signs of empathy or kindness to Steven. Even after it's shown that Peridot intends to invade Earth and bring other Gems with her (thanks to Lapis's message to Steven), Steven still thinks that if she sees just how nice Earth and humans are, she won't want to hurt anyone. The only people Steven seems to hostile any dislike for are anyone who tries to harm his friends.
As part of his kind nature, Steven is constantly putting the needs of others before his own. He always tried to reassure and comfort others, even when he himself might be upset, and has repeatedly put himself in danger because of his strong desire to protect. In "The Return", he demands that his father take him back to Beach City, where the Gems are holding the fort against the invading homeworld Gems, despite his father essentially telling him that it would be too dangerous for him to go back. Steven refuses to listen, insists that the Gems would be hopeless without the powers of his shield, and returns to rescue the Crystal Gems much to their chagrin (as they had told his father, Greg, to get Steven out of there to begin with). In "Open Book", Steven's desire to make Connie happy causes issues when he has to push his own opinions and feelings down for her sake. And, in "Joy Ride", he's shown to be cautious and protective of the human teenagers he's hanging around, despite being much younger than them. It's likely that his nurturing protectiveness and almost motherly nature (he calls things his children a lot ("Lion, if anything happens to me, Dad will need a new son")) is a trait he shares with his mother, Rose Quartz.
Steven's relationship to the other Crystal Gems, as well as his late mother, tie into many of his insecurities and personal issues. He feels guilty for being the reason why Rose isn't around anymore (as she gave up her physical form to bring Steven into this world), after seeing how much the other Crystal Gems admire and miss her. He's well aware of the fact that the other Gems sometimes see him as an extension of her (Pearl: "Sometimes I wonder...if she can see me through your eyes, what would she think of me now?" (paraphrased)) and thus, feels obligated to live up to this high and impossible standard. He worries that the Gems don't think of him as one of their own (because he's half-human, because he's young, because he's his mother's replacement) and does a lot to try and earn their approval. The Gems, in return, do their best to act as both family and mentors to Steven, but sometimes act irrationally or harshly towards him because their own expectations for him ARE a little skewed, sometimes. But they always make up afterwards, and are a closer family for it. However, there are some issues -- such as his late mother -- that Steven doesn't discuss with the Gems anymore. Some wounds run a little too deep.
Steven enjoys cracking jokes and making puns, and enjoys playing music with his dad. He loves animals and has a pet lion (appropriately named Lion) that used to belong to his mother. Lion is the closest thing he has to remember Rose by, and loves him all the more because of it. The things that help him remember his mom, such as the video he finds that she left for him, help Steven reconcile his own conflicted feelings towards his wonderful person he never had a chance to meet. ("I don't know how to feel about you, but everyone else does. I wish I could have met you, then this place would make me sad, and I could cry healing tears, like you.") He's told by the Gems and by his father, though, that he is very much like his mother.
For a child, Steven has a world of responsibility on his shoulders that he is still figuring out how to properly cope with. But not even the dangers of protecting the earth can stop him from being goofy, carefree, and loving towards everyone and everything he meets.
