Character Name: Kairi Series: Kingdom Hearts Timeline: Post KH3D Canon Resource Links:Series and Kairi’s own Wiki page :)
Personality: Though Kairi acts mainly as support and a concept of home and love for Sora, she is still a person all to herself in the Kingdom Hearts games. She is cheerful, kind, devoted, and happy. When we are first introduced to her in the original game she can appear very bold in certain situations, but she doesn’t seem to make stupid mistakes or be thoughtless in her decisions. It’s probably better to say she is courageous and spirited, and that she will do anything she can to help a friend. This even means putting herself in danger if the need arises. Kairi seems to make friends easily and be very easy to get along with. She has a very gentle and compassionate nature that seems to draw people to her. Kairi is also fairly adventurous and energetic, but she also holds the idea of home and safety dear to her heart.
She is brave, loving, mature, and thoughtful. When faced with adversity, Kairi can be stubborn and determined, so she always seems to come out on top. This is probably because she has her own strengths, even though she rarely fights, and also seems to have very good luck. Having incredibly loving, strong, and selfless companions in her life also makes it easier for her to get out of scrapes. She’s a bright girl, knowing when to push forward and when to wait patiently. When she saw an opportunity to help Sora return from becoming a Heartless in Hollow Bastion, she threw herself in harm’s way to save him. But when she has to stay behind in Traverse Town and wait, she does so without too much complaint. She simply gives Sora her good luck charm and tells him to bring it back, her own way of saying “Don’t get hurt.”
In Kingdom Hearts II, Kairi becomes a bit quieter, probably due to the disappearance of two of her best friends and the loss of some of her own memories. She seems to only hang out with Selphie at this point, but it doesn’t make her any less of a good person. She is still devoted, loving, and kind, just a bit more introverted than what we saw in Kingdom Hearts I. She’s seen a lot, and is probably more mature than most girls her age. When her memories of Sora start to return, we begin to see some of the fire from Kingdom Hearts I return. When Axel comes to kidnap her, she doesn’t go quietly, escaping from him and ending up in Twilight Town. She immediately makes friends with the TT kids, but eventually she is taken to the Organization XIII headquarters against her will. Even though she herself is in danger she worries for Sora, and when she is presented with an opportunity to escape, she takes it even though she can’t be 100% sure where it will lead her. When presented with an opportunity to fight and protect Sora, she jumps into the fray without hesitation, despite little battle training. Kairi is not a girl to be messed with when her loved ones are at stake. She’s feisty and fierce, and you really don’t want to make her mad. Since I am taking her from the end of KH3D, she is now being trained by Riku to use her keyblade, and more than likely takes her duty as a keybearer VERY seriously.
Kairi is very important to both Riku and Sora, and vice versa. She seems to share a very special bond with Sora though, and while Riku cares deeply for her, she does not seem to hold the same feelings for him. He is a dear friend, but nothing more. Sora is the one she seems to have a crush on, as she suggests the two of them leave the islands by themselves in the first game.
As one of the princesses of heart, Kairi’s heart is one of pure light. This lends itself to a sort of ‘pure’ personality. She feels negative emotions and has the capacity to be angry or sad, but really doesn’t seem to really hate anyone or be influenced by darkness. While it’s not the complete source of it, it’s probably one reason why Kairi has such a bright disposition, a never wavering sense of hope, and is so easily able to make friends with the new people she meets. All in all, Kairi is a very special and good young lady. Without her, I don’t think Sora or Riku would be half as strong as they are.
Strengths/Weaknesses: Kairi’s strengths lie mostly in her personality and friendships. She is a girl who others take to easily, and even though she spends most of her time with Sora and Riku on the islands, she still has other people she can rely on. She’s witty, smart, friendly, and quick-thinking, which means that we tend to see her as more of a planner/thinker rather than a doer. But that doesn’t mean she can’t get the job done. When she sets her mind to something she is nearly unstoppable.
As for physical skills, she is training to use a keyblade, so she’s build some muscle. If she was handed a sword or weapon akin to it in Route, she might be able to wield it with some precision. She’s crafty, and can sew, as well as cook and make rather awesome lists.
When it comes to weaknesses, Kairi isn’t without her own set. She’s not particularly buff or strong, and she also has no grip on magic. Not that magic would help her here, but still. She’s slender and thin, so she’s not exceptionally strong. No bench pressing Snorlaxes or anything. Her kindness can sometimes get her into trouble, and while she’s not gullible, she is trusting. This could land her in hot water.
While her love for her friends indeed gives her power, they can also be used against her. If Sora or Riku was in trouble, she wouldn’t think twice about getting herself hurt to save them. If anyone was out to get her, her boys could definitely be used against her.
