Canon Resource Links: Info about the series Andromeda and Trance herself

Note: I’ll be picking up the purple version from the first two seasons, as the gold version is basically an entirely new and separate character.

Personality: Trance is once described by her best friend as being "An enigma wrapped up in a riddle with a tail in the middle." Granted, said best friend was delirious from pain and having his brain quite literally overloaded at the time, but it’s still one of the best ways to describe her. Pretty much everything about her is a mystery in one way or another, including her past before meeting the rest of the crew, her true motivations, and even what (and who) exactly she is. Luckily, she drops enough hints here and there for us to get at least the beginnings of an idea. As strange as it sounds, while Trance hides quite a bit of herself, she’s still a very open person. Even though the ‘why’ may never be the most apparent, the ‘what’ is always very clear. Trance is basically everything a little girl would expect in her favorite Disney princess, minus the love story. She’s kind, generous, loving, caring, and kind of ditzy. Usually. Back her into a corner, though, and you’ll see that it isn’t all she can be.

She often seems to approach life much like a child would. She’s either very unfamiliar with, or at least wants to appear unfamiliar with, life among humans, or indeed most residents of the galaxy. She rarely understands seemingly simple phrases and idioms, tending to take them literally instead. When we first meet her, she talks happily about her predecessor who retired and bought a farm, only to be corrected that, no, he had bought THE farm, when his space suit tore. She greets the world with a sort of wonder and innocence that not many adults possess, choosing to trust in the innate goodness of people until they’ve more than shown otherwise. A pretty flower or picture will earn more attention than any amount of money. She smiles and laughs and loves and feels sad or heartbroken without worrying about what everyone else will think. This isn’t to say she’s stupid or incapable of understanding the world. Her occasionally wicked sense of humor (offering to get steak sauce for one of her alien crewmates to eat another one) says she understands far more than she lets on, but she chooses to ignore the worst parts of the world when she can.

When pressed, though, shades of what Trance is capable of begin to show through. In order to stop a fight, she quite calmly promises to kill both people involved unless they stop. “And I’ll get away with it, too. Know why? Because I’m cute.” She knows exactly what her image makes people think and uses that to her best advantage. When she’s captured by a scientist who wants to learn how to kill her because he blames her species for the near destruction of his homeworld, she slowly transforms over the course of the episode from the persona she usually projects to one that’s darker and far more worldly, outwardly lying to him and laughing when he believes her. While this darker side rarely makes an appearance, it does exist, making the occasional counterpoint to her usual bubbly outlook on life.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

+ Friendly
Trance can make friends with anyone, and she usually chooses to do exactly that at every opportunity. Or tries to, at least. The more she thinks someone ‘needs’ a friend, the harder she’ll try to be one. Granted, this can occasionally turn out badly, but for the most part, she’s pretty good at it.

+ Green Thumb
She can and does grow just about anything and everything. She loves her plants, giving them names and personalities, and taking as good care of them as she would any other living being. She’s pretty good at keeping those other living beings alive, too, being a trained medic.

+ Generous
Trance very rarely thinks of herself first. She will give a person the shirt off her back if she thinks they need it. Even if, sometimes, what she thinks someone needs isn’t exactly what they think they need.

+ Lucky
Beka occasionally refers to Trance as her personal good luck charm. She’s able to see and judge various possible futures and timelines which lets her be in the right place at the right time more often than not. Even without that, though, she’s just plain full of good luck. She’s never welcome very long in casinos.

+/- Cute
Her overall childlike attitude and manner of expression tend to make people underestimate her or discount her entirely if they don’t know her well. However, it also lets her get away with more than most people because no one would ever suspect she’s capable of certain things.

+/- Outspoken
She is not afraid of speaking her mind, either to praise someone or call them out on being mean. This is a very good trait most of the time, but it has gotten her into trouble when she’s gone up against people much larger and meaner than her. It even got her killed once, but she got better.

- Technology
Being a solar avatar, she tends to make electronic things rather... confused, much like a solar flare would interrupt signals. She manages to break supposedly foolproof equipment with surprising ease. She once managed to send the entire ship back in time accidentally. So she tends to just avoid most technology she doesn’t need to use.

- Naive
Whatever Trance knows or thinks under the surface, outwardly she’s exceedingly naive. She’s gullible, always choosing to believe the best of people, even if they’ve proved her wrong before. Part of it may certainly be an act to get people to trust her, but most of it is Trance wanting to believe in a better universe than the one that really exists.

- Secretive
She plays her cards close to her chest, close enough that even her best friends don’t always know what she’s up to. She usually manages to work things out on her own, but sometimes this practice backfires.

First Person Sample:[video]

[There’s a pretty young woman on the feed today, fiddling with the strap of the bag over her shoulder. Her blonde hair is pulled up in a pair of short pigtails, making her look younger than she probably is.

When she realizes the feed is on, she waves cheerfully.]

Oh! I got it to work. Hi! I’m usually not very good with electronics, in fact I’m kind of the opposite of good with electronics, but I guess that doesn’t count here because I don’t seem to really be me here, either, which is strange, but we’ve had stranger things happen, so I guess it’s not that strange.

[She bites her lip, suddenly looking pensive.]

Anyway, um, speaking of not being me, I’m kind of missing a tail, and it’s really kind of upsetting to me, so if anyone’s seen it, or knows who I need to talk to to get it back, I’d really appreciate it if you could let me know. So, um... thanks! Bye!

Third Person Sample: Everything happens for a reason.

She just had to keep reminding herself of that. Even if she was strangely not-purple any more, and tragically tailless, not to mention who knew how many light years away from the people she called family and the universe she was supposed to be keeping an eye on. There had to be a reason for it, so she’d just make the best of it.

Not that it was hard to make the best of things here. The scenery was beautiful and the music was fun, even if she was the only one who seemed to think so. And the best part was having Bambi around. She smiled at her Deerling, giving him a giant hug when he pranced over to her. “Even if I don’t have anyone else here yet, you’re my friend, aren’t you.”

It wasn’t strictly true that she didn’t have friends here. She did. Or she thought she did, at least. She certainly had people that she liked and that she wanted to help and who seemed to like her. It wasn’t the same, though. Beka and Harper and Rev Bem were practically family by now. Dylan and Rommie and even Tyr, too, no matter if he did his best to pretend otherwise. She knew better, though. On the inside, Tyr was just as cuddly as Bambi here.

The Deerling stood still before snorting at a leaf and bounding away again.

Maybe... not quite as cuddly. But it was still close. And all of them were back where they should be, where she should be, having adventures and probably being stupid and almost getting killed at least once a week if she knew Dylan, and by now, she totally knew Dylan. What if they needed her? Of course they needed her. It was why she was there in the first place.

She sighed, giving Bambi another hug when he came to check on her. “Is that why I’m here, too? To save... something? Or someone?” Not that he could answer, but just asking the question felt good.

She couldn’t see the possibilities here, no matter how much she tried. She couldn’t see how any of this was going to turn out. So all she could do was make the best of it.
