Character Name: Kovu Series: The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride Timeline: Post-movie. Canon Resource Links:Here!
Personality: To say the least, Kovu is a male lion. As expected, he can be aggressive, territorial, etc.. He has been humanized, of course, but, with maintaining the aforementioned traits, this may only set him up as a typical bully who doesn't want you to touch his things. While this understanding of him is not entirely innaccurate, it is only one aspect of Kovu; he can also be quite compassionate, kind, even loving. He has some specific inspirations for his day-to-day life, and he is quite the brave and heroic type when push comes to shove, having developed a strong sense of what is right and wrong, despite a past shrouded in darkness.
Kovu may come off as...kind of a jerk. He has been known to go out of his way to harrass people, finding great amusement in teasing people. He loves to joke around, often at the expense of others, though he is not necessarily a malicious sort of person (or, er...lion). One way to earn some respect with him is to take his jokes lightly; he finds it extremely annoying when people get incredibly offended or aggressive over his teasing (even though he has been known to do that very thing when other people try teasing him). Though Kovu can be quite hot-headed, immature, naive, etc., he is actually quite intelligent. He is able to look at situations calmy and clinically when he has to. He is also good at thinking quickly, and for every risky situation that he gets himself into, there is one that he can find a way out of. It is because of this intelligence that Kovu cannot only be a powerful asset, but also a dangerous weapon. Though he does enjoy manipulating people, he has proven himself to be very good at it. His mother instilled this talent in him as a young cub and trained him to be spiteful and untrusting. Unfortunately, these qualities still shine through at times. But, in general, Kovu is a trustworthy individual, a natural leader, and a useful addition to any team.
Still, while Kovu normally takes his time thinking out solutions to his problems, he can be quite headstrong and passionate in certain situations. Kovu can have a short temper, and if someone truly angers him, he will find it hard to let it go. He's a grudge-holder and a revenge-seeker, as he was raised to be. Having been raised to kill, he knows some tricks that make him more of a threat than the average carnivore, so most people probably won't want to get on his bad side. Getting angry and rushing into a conflict without taking the time to think it through can be one of his biggest downfalls.
You will find that Kovu will get the most aggressive if someone is threatening his mate or his family in any way. Kiara is truly the most important thing in the world to Kovu. She is his main inspiration, and though they can argue as much as any couple, they are portrayed as the stereotypical 'meant-to-be' pair in his canon. If someone so much as insults her, Kovu is likely to become extremely angry, and if anyone dared to threaten or attack her, Kovu would be at their throats in an instant. A situation such as this would be the main reason for Kovu to rush into a fight without thinking about it beforehand, and if you're looking to push Kovu's buttons, that would be the button to push.
Though Kovu would be miserable without Kiara, he is the type of guy who would use that misery to inspire him further. Upon arriving in the Pokemon world, instead of letting their separation impair him, he will only work harder in his efforts to get back to Kiara. Of course, he is only human(you know what I mean). There are definitely times where Kovu can feel down and depressed, but he is not likely to show it to anyone. You may have already expected this, but Kovu is also one of those guys who doesn't like to show any emotion that would pin him as 'weak'. This is understandable, of course; his entire life was spent training to be the strongest, the best, the most feared. Showing any sign of weakness was a huge downfall for him, and though he is now living a happy life where that pressure has been lifted, it is still instilled in him that he should not break down in anyway unless it is in front of someone that is extremely trustworthy.
Even so, Kovu is not without compassion. He may be a jerk or a jokester around his friends (or to complete strangers), but he has also developed a strong sense of what is right and wrong through his trials; seeing an innocent person in need will pull at his heart-strings. Watching blatant injustice occur will get a reaction out of Kovu, and the natural hero that he has become will try to come to the rescue of whoever is in need. This especially applies to children and women, since he seems to have a general distaste for men. This opinion of males probably stems from his most basic animalistic instinct. In nature, a lion's pride is made up of one male lion, children, and several lionesses. The only way another male lion can join the pride is if he kills the male lion that is currently the leader of that pride. Though Kovu's canon bends this rule slightly, he is still left with an instinctual threat-system when it comes to males of his own relative age. This does not necessarily cause him to mistreat other males, but he is more wary of them.
Though Kovu is the type of guy to defend anyone that he sees as innocent, he will be especially protective of his friends/family. But becoming Kovu's friend is not as simple as it may seem. Though he may be kind to you or even let you confide in him, to be truly considered a friend to Kovu, he would have to trust you entirely, which is a rare occurence for him. But, fear not, you can work your way up to becoming one of Kovu's friends, as long as you do nothing to betray his trust. It is this intricate system which he has created for the adding of friends that leaves him so protective of the ones he has. You see, to be Kovu's friend means that you are someone extremely special to him, and his fear of losing that relationship is enough to give you a life-long protector.
Kovu's feels extremely conflicted when it comes to his former family. Though his sister, Vitani, is still alive and lives in his pride with him, their relationship is strained because of her participation in his mother's offense against him. His brother Nuka, mother Zira, and adoptive father Scar have all died. He has to live with a light guilt for the death of his brother and mother, since they perished in the war between his current family and his old one, and the conflict surrounding his father goes to an even deeper level.
As a young cub, Kovu was hand-chosen by Scar to become his successor. Though he was favored by Scar, the man who he called his father is the one that decided he would be raised to be a murderer. He loved his father, even if their relationship was a disturbing one, and has wondered on more than one occassion about the man's well-being in the afterlife. Though he knows now that what Scar taught him was wrong, he still believes that Scar had some good qualities to him, and that he would've been a good person if his mind weren't so disturbingly altered by jealousy and rage. Even with this thought, Kovu still fears the he will become his father one day; of course, after he "marries" Kiara and permanently joins Simba's pride, this fear is stifled a little, but it will forever linger in the back of his head. I have no doubt that the fear of becoming Scar is the greatest fear that Kovu will ever experience (other than, perhaps, the fear of losing his dear Kiara).
Kovu is a creature that lets challenges inspire him to do better; he see's fear and pain as a reason to work harder and accomplish what he needs to accomplish. Though he can be headstrong, short-tempered, and agressive, he can also be kind, affectionate, protective, and clever. His flaws are not few, but he also has outstanding assets, and once he becomes your friend, he is your friend for life.
Strengths/Weaknesses: I have said before that Kovu can be a strong asset as well as a grave danger, depending on the situation. He is very intelligent and clever, but can use this intelligence to use and manipulate people. He has been trained from the time he was very young to fight and kill; depending on who you are, this can either be a good thing or a bad thing. Of course, being raised to hate and hurt can do a lot to a person, and Kovu has the emotional scars to prove it (as well as some physical ones). Kovu feels a lot of inner-turmoil when it comes to his mother, father, and siblings. He has a lot of fear when it comes to his father and the similarities between them; he does not want to become Scar. Other people fear this as well, and after being exiled from Simba's pride in the middle of the movie, as well as his previous pride, Kovu definitely has some insecurities and fears about fitting in and being accepted. By the end of the movie, these insecurities are more or less settled, but it is still an adjustment for the man.
Speaking of adjustments, being thrown into this new and confusing setting will definitely be a trail for Kovu. Becoming human will take a great deal of his physical strength away. He won't be able to walk correctly at first, will be at a loss as to using technology, will not know what foods to eat without his ability to hunt, etc.. The new setting will be all the more overwhelming, and being separated indefinitely from Kiara and the rest of his family will definitely be a struggle. But because one of Kovu's biggest strengths is his perserverance, he will adapt as necessary and do everything he can to get back home to the Pridelands.

[The feed flickers on and, as usual, Kovu has some time positioning it before it finally settles on his face, looking none-too-pleased with the effort. You've gotta give the guy some credit. After all, he's only been a human for...what? A week now? He really has adjusted to using the Pokegear pretty well in that time...
[But, that doesn't make it any less frustrating. And working on an empty stomach? Doesn't help.]
This stuff?
[Holding up an open tube of toothpaste, the top messy with the caked-on goop.]
Is disgusting. I know you humans will eat just about anything, but I cannot take your food any more...
[Bluh.]
Does anyone know where I can hunt? I tried taking down a rattata yesterday, but...
[An exasperated huff.]
Look, I can't just eat a pokemon, okay? [Concurs his skitty with a rather horrified background-mew] So...if any of you know where I can find any antelope, wildabeast...anything, just...
[Sigh.]
Let me know?

(Taken from his arrival.)
It takes a moment for his eyes to adjust. But...just what are they adjusting to? Color, first of all. Bright, vivid, blinding color. And then? He couldn't even tell you. It's so much to take in that it actually takes a moment for him to start feeling overwhelmed...
...and then it's all downhill from there.
Monkeys? Apes? He doesn't even know what. Just these...tall, bald creatures, wandering around all decked in...what? It's a mystery. And, if he had to judge by their own facial expressions (which, granted, he's not terribly concerned with at the moment), he'd say they're all just about as confused as he is...
It's only after a few minutes that he finally ventures a glance down at himself. Why? Because something just...doesn't feel right...Maybe it's because he feels a bit chilly, or maybe it's the fact that that instinctual growl didn't quite leave his throat the right way...Maybe he just wants to make sure that he's still in tact. After all, with these strange creatures wandering around this strange, technicolor landscape...wouldn't you be a little shaken too?
There's no reassurance in what he sees. Brown, lean, naked flesh, unfamiliar toes that he's sure he can't be wiggling right now but...somehow is anyway. And then, his paws-- no, his hands...his hands? It can't be...he doesn't even know what it is, but he knows that it can't be...
"H-hey!" he shouts, attempting to stand up, but realizing that...if these new legs really do belong to him...he no longer knows how to use them. His hands fly to the ground, now level with his knees; he attempts to get his feet where they are. It works for a moment (not without some giggles from the people around him), his rump high in the air, no tail to be spoken of. But he can't seem to keep his balance long enough to walk, falling sideways to the ground after only a few seconds.
"What the--" he groans in frustration, attempting his crawl again, then again, then again, until...finally, whether it be out of inherited human instinct or some benevolent god's mercy, he somehow launches himself onto two legs instead of the familiar four. Slightly startled by the new position, he goes stumbling into the nearest building, hands flying up to brace himself against its wall. What is going on? He can't even stand long enough to figure it out, yet the entire time his mind has been reeling...Kiara...has she met this fate as well? And the Pridelands...What's become of them? How did he get here when only seconds ago he was there, happy, peaceful, finally moving past all of the turmoil...
He can barely focus on being angry with all that's going on around him. Dozens of other...what exactly is he now? They all seem to be asking the same questions that he is, though...without the physical trouble. His eyes are still burning, his head aching from the sensory overload, and his legs wobbling, desperately trying to find balance.
He slides down against the side of the building, sprawling out on the ground and closing his eyes, fingers (?) going to his temple, for...some reason...Great. Now he can't even make sense of his own mannerisms.
He takes a deep breath, chest rising, sliding against the fabric that covers it, yet another unfamiliarity. He tries to think, to put it all together, to just...calm down for a minute and sort out what to do next.
