Personality: Sokka is probably one of the most unique individuals from the world of Avatar, and that is saying something. There are many traits that make Sokka who he is, and it is the combination of those traits that makes him quite unlike anyone else ever encountered in his world.

Over the course of his life he has grown into talented warrior and strategist, always coming up with plans to adapt to the situations around him and never giving up on a battle, even when defeat is imminent. Recently he has learned the value of a strategic retreat, and over all else will value the lives of his friends and comrades over continuing the fight in any circumstance. It is those qualities that make him seem to be a natural leader, along with his charisma and intellect as powerful tools and an unmatched sense of honor and duty to keep his strategies in check and allowing him to factor in risk as well.

But, Sokka isn’t only a warrior and strategist. He is quick-witted and charming in his own way, loving social gatherings and keeping up with trends of whatever place he’s in so that he can easily both blend into the crowd and shine as an individual. Although he is somewhat prone to failing to his nerves before a big event, for the most part he is calm and more than willing to chat it up with the people around him, drawing them to him with his eccentric way of thinking and his knowledge of the world around him.

Sokka has always had a love of learning, especially if he can easily see what benefit said learning would have for him. He will go out of his way to gain any knowledge he deems useful to him, even to the point of risking his own life for it at points. How he applies this knowledge is also admirable, using it to formulate feasible battle plans and always exploiting every advantage he possibly can with it along with his own creativity and ingenuity.

When given the right tools and resources, Sokka’s ingenuity knows no bounds; he has come up with the solution to detecting dangerous gases leaking from an enclosed space, solved the conundrum of a hot air balloon, and came up with the initial designs for submarines and war tanks utilized with water and earth bending respectively. He also applies it on a smaller scale to his own fights, using his surroundings and supplies to come up with ingenious plots. They don’t always work (IE Fire-Bending Bombs), but his rate of success has earned him the respect of his allies, despite his inability to bend elements.

What is also shown is that Sokka is a quick-study; he doesn’t have to read over documents for very long in order to remember the information almost exactly (suggesting a photographic memory), and within the period of three days he was able to pick up on sword fighting under a master in a feasible fighting style and, after barely examining wind currents and landscapes around him, is able to calculate the perfect angle to throw his boomerang and have it always hit its target. It is traits like this that make him a fearsome adversary in battle.

Sokka isn’t a teenager only raised in battle, however. He has a genuine love for his family, friends and home that withstands almost anything. It doesn’t seem to take much for Sokka to be attracted to a person’s personality either, and although he forms relationships quickly he takes every one of them very seriously and values them all as important. He is quick to judge when he dislikes someone as well, almost instinctive in his opinions but never quite forming his opinion on them until he sees those people in action. Well, in most cases.

For a long time Sokka has hated those in the fire nation for all that they have done to his village and people, although he has never let that hate blind him to the fact that the people of the Fire Nation are people just like him and those in his village. Although he was generally distrustful of them before the resolution of the war, he again chose to judge by action as opposed to lineage. If a person has wronged him in the past however, it takes proof, great action, and the thoughts of his friends in order for him to give those people a chance, let alone truly trust them again. As Zuko has proven, it isn’t an impossible thing to change Sokka’s mind, but it is a very difficult thing to accomplish.

He is growing more into a man who can better-hide his quirkier tendencies, but Sokka is still fairly high-strung and, for lack of a better word, cynical. It doesn’t take much in order to seemingly get on his nerves or to get him to complain and be sarcastic, such as when things don’t go according to his plans (restricted to outside the battlefield) or when he gets himself into a sticky situation that he can’t feasibly get out of. It seems he values this part of his identity as much as any other, as although he has stated that he would give it up if it would save his life at one point, he immediately refuted that when he was rescued by Aang and Toph. Normally it would be seen as a negative thing, but it’s Sokka’s obsession with detail and perfection that often gets the group through their adversities and pushes them forward with his quick wit, sarcastic commentary, and navigational planning, and by this point he’s more than aware of it. He wouldn’t trade any of his own traits for the world because of this.

It might seem like Sokka is always level-headed these days, and in most cases he is; even in emotionally heated moments among his friends, he tends to remain calm and neutral in trying to keep the peace among his sister and friends, knowing that emotions blinding you can be deadly if it happens at the wrong time. Unfortunately, for all his experience and maturity, he is also prone to getting overwhelmed by said emotions when his friends and family are threatened or wronged in some way. He will snap and act in anger, often saying or doing something that he later regrets in those brief outbursts of emotion. If anything, it just proves how much he cares about the people around him, but it is something that he has yet to grow out of in order to control more.

First Person Sample: --too weird.

[When the feed clicks on, it shows that it’s laying on the ground and pointed at a boy no older than sixteen. It doesn’t seem like he’s even noticed that the gear’s on at the moment, and at the moment he’s busying himself with examining the red and white ball in his hand.]

That professor guy said this is a ‘pokéball’, right? Wonder what it does...

[It doesn’t take much poking before he finally decides to just push the button, and he’s startled when it grows, opens, and in a burst of light, releases a little yellow spider. Well, little in terms of pokémon, considering that for a spider it’s pretty big. And when it lands on his face, the boy does the only thing that makes sense to him; Grab it and fling it off.]

AGH! GET IT OFF GET IT OFF ME!!

[He’s breathing hard and rubbing at his face, shaking his head and frowning hard at the ball before he looks at the creature that came out. The sort of angry-looking creature that just got thrown into the side of a building, although the boy doesn’t seem to notice that just yet.]

Wait, you’re just a spider? Not a rhinoceros spider or a spider-mantis? Kinda weird, but I can deal with it. Kinda small to be useful though...

[Another yelp of surprise get startled out of him when the ‘spider’ starts blowing sticky thread at him, and before he knows it he’s trapped against the ground in a web. He struggles valiantly but to no use as the spider climbs onto his back and starts trying to cover him more.]

I take it back I take it back you’re great you’re amazing you’re super spider!!

[At last the bug seems satisfied, and instead of trying to suffocate his trainer he goes to his head and rests on top of him for a nap. That’s when the boy sighs, a little relieved but put out at the same time.]

You’re not gonna let me out, are you. Wait, what’s that?

[At last he notices the gear again, blinking owlishly a couple of times before he reaches for it, straining against the webbing but managing to grab it again.]

Huh, that light’s on. Wonder what it—

[The feed disconnects there.]

Third Person Sample: Maybe this place wasn’t so bad. The food was decent (aside from that bento thing that crazy ‘mom’ lady gave him. How dare she call it complete without any meat!?), the animals were kind of cool – well, when they weren’t trying to kill him anyway – and Katara was there. From what he’d heard, Zuko and some girl named Korra were there too, and from what Katara had been telling him she was Aang’s next life. Which was kind of freaky, and he’d have to figure out just how that worked. Or how this place worked and took people for that matter. It’d be something for him to work on while they were travelling and training and stuff. The world had a nice laid-back feeling to it though, as if it had never seen war. It made him worry about back home, and what his dad, Aang, Toph, Suki, and everyone else were up to, but... It felt like this was where he was needed right now. Katara was here, after all, and he had to look after his little sister still – even if she didn’t always think she needed it. He had to make sure she’d be ready to take on the things that she hadn’t learned to already herself, and big brothers were there to help with that until their little sisters were ready for it, right?

“Hey, the town’s there,” Sokka grinned to himself as he saw the horizon coming up in the distance, leaning on the side of the boat with his Joltik riding on his head. Okay, him and Super Spider had a rough start, but he thought they were sort of getting along now. He wasn’t getting hog-tied by spider webs anymore anyway. And the cruise to get over to this ‘Kanto’ place was really nice too, even if it was a little lonely. It gave him time to study up, and now he thought he sort of got how this world worked; there was a lot of fighting, sure, but it was all in fun and... Maybe they sort of needed that, to just have fun again. Not to mention Katara said that time pretty much stood still whenever they were there, and considering that he’d never noticed Katara going missing into a place like this back home... Well, he still had to figure out how that one worked, but he believed that it was true. What kind of a jerk wouldn’t believe his little sister about something like that?

At long last they reached the harbor, Sokka grabbing his things and stepping off of the ship before he caught sight of the familiar water-tribe girl, “Ready to meet my little sister, Super Spider?”

He heard a little hiss and just assumed that meant yes before he cupped one hand at the side of his mouth and called out, “Hey! Katara! We’re over here!”
