Personality:
Spike was hatched and raised by the unicorn and main character Twilight Sparkle, and he looks up to her as an older sister figure. Because of this, he tends to see himself as closer to a pony than a dragon, however this has led to some deep insecurity issues about his draconic background and the stereotypical image of a dragon. Sometimes he feels that he is out of place in Ponyville, or he feels he is unable to measure up to the stereotypical image of a dragon (that they are big and strong). This is highly evident when he goes on a ‘self discovery’ journey, and meets a group of teenage dragons. They tease him about his size, his personality, and his lack of bravery. By wanting to fit in with the dragons around him (and be what the majority of the land’s inhabitants think a dragon should be) Spike initially succumbs to the peer pressure of the other young dragons, and tries to act ‘like a dragon’. However it is easy to see that while happy at first at being accepted, he feels uncomfortable with the actions of the other young dragons, and in the end risks being ostracised by them by choosing to save one of the phoenix eggs they want him to break. Despite wanting to be seen by his peers as a dragon, Spike chooses to remains his playful, loyal self, rather than become one of them.

Spike also appears to have abandonment issues, however it is difficult to see where these originally may have developed - it may be tied into his insecurities about being a dragon raised by a unicorn. There are times when Spike is scared that Twilight might not need him anymore, and he becomes extremely upset when he feels that she may abandon him. However Twilight has never indicated that this would ever happen. In one episode, a magic ‘door’ shows that Spike’s deepest fear is Twilight telling him that she has no use for him anymore. When the real Twilight manages to snap him out of the spell, Spike is crying at seeing this deepest fear come about.

Spike also has a jealous streak, particularly when it comes to sharing the affection and responsibilities of Twilight. Spike doesn’t like the idea of anyone invading ‘his territory’, and feels jealous and threatened when this is the case, as with Twilight’s pet, Owlowiscious. This jealous side links with his fear of abandonment and uselessness.
Despite these underlying issues, Spike is actually a very optimistic and playful character. He often encourages Twilight to relax and play instead of studying so hard, and is one of the first to encourage her to make friends. He often cheers her up, gives her confidence in herself and her abilities, and tries to make sure she knows how to have fun and not overwork herself. He is her ‘number 1 assistant’, and seems to be content to help her by finding books/sorting her vast library, scribing for her, and assisting with spells (or being the guinea pig). Because of Twilight’s influence (and her strong opinion of ‘hard work’ and organisation), Spike is usually mature and responsible in his role as her assistant.

Spike also has close relationships with the other five main ponies. He always shows concern if one of them is in trouble, and will try to cheer them up if they are upset. He is a bit of a ‘fan boy’ in regards to Rainbow Dash - he is in her fan club, and is the writer of her ‘autobiography’ (as she calls it). Spike also has a huge crush on Rarity, and despite his dragon nature to want to hoard things (particularly gems), he would willingly give them all to Rarity if she desired. He is always eager and willing to assist her in finding gems for her outfits, and often becomes shy or enamoured if she shows him affection or gratitude. It appears that Rarity is well aware of Spike’s crush, but never mentions it - whether this is to refrain from hurting Spike’s feelings, or because she actually likes him back is not clear.

Spike’s youth is also very evident, despite the responsibilities given to him by Twilight. He likes to gorge on icecream, cake and gems (when he has the chance), dress up in costumes, makes faces over things he doesn’t like, and whines when he doesn’t want to do something / doesn’t like something. He also has a habit of falling asleep when he is tired, akin to a young child. He sometimes laughs or pokes fun at the misfortune of others (in one episode he gives main six ponies nicknames that relate to the curse that is affecting them), and makes sarcastic comments.

Occasionally the ‘dragon’ side of Spike comes out. He can be greedy, manipulative and sly when he wants to be. While Spike usually has decent self-control, there are times where he will become greedy and over-indulge in something he loves, to the point of making himself either sick or obsessive. This is particularly evident in one episode when Spike begins to receive presents for his birthday. When he realises that he can get things for free, he becomes greedy and uses his birthday as an excuse to get more presents. Eventually his greed overpowers his intelligence, and all he can think about is acquiring more ‘things’. This sudden increase in the greedy side of his nature causes him to grow exponentially in this episode until Rarity is able to help him revert back to his usual self. Spike has also manipulated ponies into giving him more gems for what he believes will be an easy job (pet-sitting). He throws aside the responsibility of this role as his sole focus is to acquire more gems. When he displays this greedy side, he is often rebuked by Twilight, which shows their relationship to be more like a family than just friends.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Loyal: He is always there for Twilight and the other ponies, and helps Twilight when he sees that she is in trouble.
+ Optimistic: He is usually very positive, and helps boost Twilight’s confidence when she is stressed or upset over something.
+ A good friend: Spike listens and tries to help when he sees that they are in trouble
+ Playful / teasing: He likes to joke, laugh and be sarcastic. Being a baby dragon, there are times when he acts like the child he is.
+ Learns from his mistakes: Spike has shown that when he makes a mistake (such as becomes overly greedy), he can learn from these.
+ Musical talent (piano and singer): He is an adept piano player and singer.
+ Can cook and scribe well: He is shown to have decent cooking skills and is a good scribe. He is used to using a quill and parchment.
+ Caring: He cares strongly about his friends, especially Twilight, who he looks up to as an older sister. He also has a pet phoenix (briefly), which shows that he cares about other animals.
+ Is a post office: Spike burps letters back and forth between Twilight and Princess Celestia using his dragon breath. I WANT A BABY DRAGON TO DO THIS FOR ME.

+/- Confident: Spike’s confidence comes and goes due to his insecurities. He tends to be overly confident on the outside (probably to cover up his insecurities), but this show of confidence can easily be destroyed.
+/- Brave/Scaredy cat: Spike tends to put on a front of being brave and strong, however often when something scary actually happens, Spike gets afraid or nervous. However despite his fears, he will still help, particularly when encouraged by his friends or if one of them is in trouble.

- Greedy: As he is a dragon by nature, he has a tendency to be greedy, and hoards or gorges on various things he likes (gems, icecream, cupcakes etc). He sometimes shows a lack of self-control.
- Insecure: He is unsure of his identity/purpose/abilities, and boasts to cover up for this insecurity.
- Sneaky: Tied to his greed, he has lied and manipulated ponies to get what he wants, although this is rare, and he doesn’t do it with the purpose of being nasty or cruel.
- Childish: Due to his age, Spike can be childish sometimes, and whines and complains about things he doesn’t like or doesn’t want to do.
- Jealous: Spike becomes jealous when he feels his role or his ‘territory’ is being threatened by someone else.

First Person Sample:

[The feed clicks on to a close up image of Spike’s chin. It starts moving around in a dizzying pace as Spike turns it, inspecting it. Eventually it settles on his face].

I think I got it working [He taps the screen]. This thing is weird. And so are my claws. [Pauses to inspect his hands].

Twilight, did you mess up another spell? I mean, look at this! I’m this weird pink colour…and squishy.

[Spike pokes at his cheek with a screwed up expression on his face].

And my tail! My tail is gone! [The background spins as Spike turns in a circle].

[Whines a little] Twiiiiiliiiight. Can’t you fix it and send us back? This place is so weird….and a little scary…and where in Equestria is that music coming from??

[There’s a snapping sound, and he swiftly jumps to one side and looks down at something off camera].

H..Hey! I’m not ignoring you!

[A pause, and then a worried and slightly panicked look crosses Spike’s face.]

Uh oh…I think I made it angry…

Third Person Sample:

Spike dropped down under a tree, pulling off his backpack and stretching out, exhausted. “This walking is so boring!” He closed his eyes, but quickly opened them again at the sound of snapping. His Trapinch stood there like a solid rock, giving him a beady look. Spike sighed and sat up again.

“I suppose you’re hungry?” he asked it. The Trapinch continued to stare at him. Spike sighed again and rummaged through the backpack, strewing things across the shaded grass. He finally emerged, looking a little sheepish. “So um…I think we’re out of food? I probably shouldn't have eaten all that stuff at breakfast…and then brunch…but I was hungry! And it’s not like you stopped me! You ate a lot too you know.”

Spike could tell this was not going down well with his Trapinch. He quickly scooted behind the tree as his Trapinch suddenly opened its mouth wide, well aware by now of how razor sharp those teeth were. He had scars to prove it - this squishy body wasn't really well equipped to fend of bite attacks. It was times like this that Spike really missed his scales.
“TRAAAAAAAAAA”.

Spike winced. Usually that sound was followed by an attack. “Okay okay! I’ll go find something for both of us, I promise!” he said hurriedly, trying to placate his sole pokemon. He gave his Trapinch a wide berth as he wandered around searching. Even though it never looked very mobile, his Trapinch could move a lotfaster than Spike had originally given it credit for. Usually straight as Spike, and with teeth showing.

Not far away from where his Trapinch sat watching him like a hawk, Spike found an apple tree with about a dozen medium sized apples on it. “Perfect! Now I just need to get them down,” he said gleefully rubbing his hands. “Hey Pinchy, I found an apple tree,” he called back to his pokemon. Silence. Spike sighed. His pokemon wasn't very talkative. “Fine,” he muttered under his breath. “I’ll get them myself”.

He tried to gauge the distance between himself and the closest apple, and jumped, trying to reach it. Unfortunately, he was too short. There were a few sticks close by, so he grabbed one and tried to use it to dislodge the apple, but he was still about a foot short of the goal. “Why did I have to stay short in this place?” he whined as he stared up at the apple. “They could have made me a little taller.”

“TRAAAAPIIIINCH”. Spike jumped about three feet in the air. His Trapinch had wandered over and was now sitting right next to him. “Ahahaha,” Spike laughed nervously, trying to restrain from bolting to the side. “You…ah…surprised me Pinchy.”

“TRAAAAAAPIIIIINCH”. Trapinch nudged Spike’s foot with its head, causing Spike to freeze, anticipating losing a limb. But instead of pain, all Spike felt was another nudge.

“TRAAAAA”. The Trapinch successfully shoved its large head under one of Spike’s feet. “Wha…wait…you want me to stand on you? Won’t that like…hurt…or something?” Spike was really confused. Trapinch had never tried to help before. Maybe it was because it wanted food. “TRAA.”

Spike wasn’t sure about this. But the apples looked so tempting. “Well…er…okay, I guess. But let me know if I’m hurting you, okay?” Despite their fractious relationship, Spike didn’t want his pokemon to get hurt or anything. His Trapinch gave him what appeared to be a dirty look. He carefully shifted his other foot to stand on Trapinch’s head, and almost lost his balance when his Trapinch stretched its head up. “Woah, careful Pinchy!” He swayed a little unsteadily. Using the stick, he reached up again. Now he was much closer. He whacked the closest one. The stem broke and the apple fell. He let out a whoop, and went for the next one.

After a few minutes of moving around the tree, Spike and Pinchy had managed to dislodge about five of the apples. Hopping off Pinchy, Spike gathered them all up, and together they wandered back to their original tree where Spike had left all his stuff.

Sitting down, Spike carefully handed an apple to Pinchy, wary about losing a finger. Surprisingly, his Trapinch took the apple equally as carefully, not even attempting to bite him. Spike grinned. One step in the right direction, finally. Twilight would be proud.
