Character Name: Ooji "Mocchi" Mochizou Series: Tamako Market Timeline: BY CURRENTLY AIRED EPISODE – (The series is almost done airing. Once it is I will place him at post-series). Canon Resource Links:His Tamako Market WIKI Page If this isn’t enough, then I will happily contribute some of my own writing for this section!
Personality: A first impression of Mochizou would definitely be that of a boy who boasts a daft and dense personality. Upon seeing his childhood friend and crush, Tamako, with a bird on her head… Well, he immediately labels it as a hat and nothing more. It is only when Dela, the bird, actually talks that he recognizes the reality of the situation. Yes. That’s a talking bird. And boy, does he hate it. His hate for Dela is actually farfetched, as his kindness toward others is quite remarkable. Perhaps it is because Dela gets to live with his crush or maybe he just hates talking birds. Either reason is understandable, let’s be honest. Especially when Mochizou is so desperate in regards to Tamako that he actually calls Tamako’s father, “Dad” – A running gag in the show where Tamako’s father yells at him for doing it, prompting a quick and comedic apology from Mochizou each and every time. While he is beyond cordial to everyone in the neighbourhood, his kindness for Tamako is immeasurable. He even goes as far as to offer to abandon his own shop on New Years, the busiest time of year for the mochi business, to help Tamako’s shop meet the demand. It’s all because his heart beats like a drum (dam dam dam, dam dam dam) for his crush. However, he never does make it to Tamako’s shop due to her father’s mindset; “He’s going to steal our mochi secrets!” … That’s not quite the reason he wants to help out, sir.
In the beginning of the series we get a look into just how head-over-heels he is for Tamako. When Mochizou opens his drawer on Tamako’s birthday, it’s shown that there are several gift wrapped presents snuggling together. Did he move his underwear in favour of those presents? Who knows… But it definitely shows us that every year he had planned to give Tamako a present but failed due to his supreme level of embarrassment on the issue. He hides the presents from Tamako. He even hides the presents from the neighbours. He wasn’t able to give Tamako a present this year, either. Oh well, that’s what happens when you’re determined to take your secret to the grave. Unfortunately for you, Mochizou, almost everyone in the neighbourhood is aware of your crush. Sorry, man. At least you’ll always have your cute cup-telephone-line with Tamako. This whole situation gives us a blueprint to the inner workings of his mind and how dedicated of a person he really is. A regular person would return, throw out, or gift the presents to another individual upon failing to give it out as an original intention. Mochizou doesn't do this. He literally holds on to each and every present; perhaps as a reminder to his failures and motivation for the next year to actually go through with it. That's concentrated dedication and he is definitely able to focus that wholeheartedness on other goals in the future.
He will do anything to impress Tamako. During a summer festival he has the job as one of the shrine carriers. It’s a tough job, that’s for sure, but Mochizou gives himself an inner speech! “I’ll show Tamako my shrine carrying skills! I’ll show her how much of a strong and buff man I am!” Then when his father shouts at him to put his back into it, Mochizou just complains about how his shoulders hurt. What a wimp. On top of that, he spent a good five minutes being entirely pissed off at a talking bird only to take that bird’s advice on courtship and request help on confessing to Tamako. Yep, spell it out with me D-E-S-P-E-R-A-T-E. With all that said, Mochizou really does have a tight grip on reality. Even in his imagination he’s a tsundere buffoon. But beyond that, in the end, he decides not to confess to Tamako – fully knowing she doesn’t share the same infatuation that he does. That won’t stop his rampaging feelings for her, though.
In episode nine we get to see how self-sacrificing he is. Despite October 10th being his birthday, he doesn’t really care – instead helping with the mochi shops and trying to cheer up Tamako’s little sister. He doesn’t expect anything for his birthday, and while he’s a little disappointed that no one remembers his birthday, he doesn’t throw a fit about it. During the final moments of the episode, Tamako presents him with a small gift right before his birthday ends and Mochizou bursts into a small fit of happy tears – showing his soft and grateful side.
While a huge part of his character revolves around his dynamic involved with Tamako, it is that exact fact that will make Mochizou so interesting in this new world that he will find himself in. How will his character develop with a lacking of love-involved interactions? Will he maintain his kindness? Will he find himself in situations where his embarrassment takes hold of him? How will his feelings toward Tamako change with that absence? Every character leaves something behind when they enter route_29, and I look forward to developing Mochizou around those vacancies.
Strengths/Weaknesses: • Mochizou is the son of a mochi maker, and as such, he had to help his father out with the store. He’s obviously skilled at creating the tasty and traditional treat. This may lend a helpful hand to creating delicious and nutritious food for his Pokemon! An important skill for a breeder! • That said, many-a- time he has abandoned his own shop in favour of helping the rival mochi shop across the street. This is both strength and weakness. While it demonstrates strong kindness for others, it definitely defines how quick he’ll leave his family shop to help his childhood friend and crush. Despite this, if his shop really needed him, he would undoubtedly stay to help his own father. • He’s a part of the Film Studies Club in his High School. Being in a club in Japan demands dedication and discipline. Beyond that, however, the Film Studies Club demands an ability to analyze plot and characters – In the Pokemon World, it may lend a hand to understanding a Pokemon’s needs. Well, that and making commercials. You know. Film-y stuff. • His biggest weakness is probably tamako tamako tamako tamako tamako tamako tamako tamako tamako tamako tamako tamako tamako tamako tamako tamako tamako tamako tamako tamako tamako tamako tamako tamako tamako tamako. • He is quite easy to manipulate. A part of this is due to his kindness for those he’s fond of, another part is due to his dense mannerisms when love is involved. He becomes nervous and lets his secrets slip. He also goes along with stupid plans if it means he may have a chance to get a step closer to confessing his feelings. • He’s definitely not good at public speaking. When Tamako is nervous about presenting an idea to the neighbourhood to boost sales, Mochizou offers to speak for her… Wanting to look cool and nice. However, this backfires when he attempts to talk and is just as nervous as Tamako. You tried, Mochizou. You tried.

Uh. So, yeah. I'm guessing the 3G wherever I am isn't that great? Looks like they put all that juice into broadcasting some weird music... From the sky... The sky?! Seriously?
[Mochizou gives an exasperated sigh. Normally he would be more shocked, but after dealing with a talking chicken for so long, he's a lot more open to accepting the oddities surrounding him. Even as a rather large "pigeon" passes him cooing, 'prrrrdgy, prrrrdgy,' he still thinks that's far more normal than an egotistical crap-face of a talking chicken. Without another second to waste, he lifts a Pokeball up to the screen.]
I'm assuming someone gave me this thinking I would eat it? Well, newsflash, but as someone who has dealt with mochi his whole life, I'm well aware that this isn't mochi. It's just a... Hard ball...
[He inspects it, twitching his nose as if to take in the smell. Perhaps he really isn't confident that it's not mochi. Maybe it's just frozen? Or a new, exotic kind? Who knows. Before he can decide whether he wants to give it a lick or not, his thumb slips and releases a cute lil' Skitty for the whole world to see. It gives a little mew and stretches before affectionately rubbing against Mochizou's leg.]
... Yeah. Okay. No. Not a mochi.
Third Person Sample: A good hour passes before Mochizou decides to approach the Skitty with a greeting. Despite his hesitation to do any kind of homework back in Japan, he wasn't going to continue on without flipping and scanning through as much information as possible. So, he had settled himself under a tree. No. Not that tree. He had tried that tree but soon found himself under a Spinarak, and he wasn't having that at all. So after a quick, girly yelp he found a different tree - A tree boasting no Spinarak what-so-ever. Oh, glorious day. It was then that an aforementioned hour passed by. Mochizou had found some information, mainly about breeding these creatures called Pokemon; and even an idiot could assume that this pink cat-like thing was one of them.
"So I'm supposed to... Breed you...?"
It's the first question he poses to his Pokemon. Hell, it's the first words he manages to grace the Skitty with. Naturally, he doesn't receive a response he's satisfied with. At least Dela back home could speak, even if it was obnoxious. He leans against the rough bark of the tree and stares blankly at the bright sky. Breeding, huh? Definitely not something he thought he'd be doing. He always thought he'd be destined to pound and roll mochi for the rest of his life... And make commercials! Commercials for his business! With kung-fu actors! ... Okay, now his mind was definitely straying from the situation at hand. Mochizou lets his gaze shift to the tall grass where he could blatantly see a mosaic of different creatures; rats and birds. The trees were abundant with scarier things like spiders and... Eggs? Well, that's new.
"Sorry little guy, I can't even give the girl I like a present on her birthday... Let alone find you another thing to... T-To..."
The Skitty replies with a mew and a small purr. Mochizou blinks at it before flushing with a bright red, as if understanding that the pink feline was teasing him. He opens his mouth as if to say something. Closes it. Opens it again. Aaaaaaand... Closes it. He makes an indignant sound before swinging his head away from his new friend.
"P-Platonically, okay? Platonically!"
He drowns himself in a bit of embarrassed heat before he turns to face his Skitty... But he soon finds himself smiling, reaching out a hand to scratch at it's chin affectionately. It's not so bad having someone to confide it; well, someone who won't run their mouth about his little secret.
