Character Name: Sayaka Miki Series: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Timeline: Due to Homura Akemi's ability to reset time, there are multiple timelines. Sayaka is pulled from a different timeline, just after Madoka makes a contract to revive her from death. Canon Resource Links: "There's no way I would regret this~!"
Personality: Sayaka is a lively and energetic tomboy, as well as a childhood friend of Madoka. She is kind, courageous and willing to work hard for others. However, she always acts before thinking twice and it's easy for her to get into conflict with other people. She desires to become a role model, a true knight of justice who will go the distance to protect people. She struggles to hold onto her ideals relating to being a Puella Magi, not wanting to work with any who would either abandon people or do things for selfish reasons. She cares deeply for her friends, is loyal to them and will stand by them. She feels regret over the consequences of her actions, Sayaka's earlier feelings of hope turning into despair.
Sayaka is first seen during the premiere walking to school with her friends, shown as very cheerful, teasing and likes fooling around. Both Sayaka and Madoka are rescued from a witch’s attack by a Puella Magi, Mami Tomoe. She looks up to the girl and makes a contract with Kyubey to save Kyousuke, a boy she likes; as a result, in this timeline she’s able to save Mami from being killed. (Sayaka didn’t make the contract in the actual series until after Mami had died in a much later timeline.) She almost immediately became her apprentice but things begin to spiral downward for Sayaka. Her intentions of becoming a Puella Magi –in any timeline which she becomes one- are helpful and defensive from the beginning, with the exception of her feelings toward the boy. She felt a need to defend her town from witches and protect others. Unfortunately, Sayaka’s one small bit of selfishness was what ultimately caused her pain. The desire to be with the people she dedicated her life to was ruined once discovering her soul was permanently detached from her body. Her desire to be recognized for her support, which she stated in the premiere is the #1 trait of a good wife, was shattered from the inside out with little hope of recovery. Sayaka’s rules on how the world worked was slowly broken: obey laws, be a good friend and no matter what, give things your all. The one thing she doesn’t lose is that she’s true to herself, understanding through her trauma that her soulless body is a machine adept for killing witches.
The main difference between the book and the anime was that Sayaka didn’t call herself an idiot before becoming a witch; she had regrets, but she was just pleased she was able to help Mami out. In both timelines, she becomes a witch and dies. Unlike the later one, in this one she was wished back to life…

…I know I’m not dreaming, because I can feel my heartbeat! Hello out there! Miki Sayaka, knight of justice is here! Oh, wait a moment… (She glances down toward her feet for a moment, bending down to pet whatever it is before getting up and is in view once again. This time, she has an added Pokemon on her shoulder, but her expression’s quite sheepish.)
Another reason I know I’m not dreaming? This little one! He wasn’t here before, or maybe he was and I got pulled here? Anyway, if anyone’s heard of someone named Madoka or Tomoe-san…let them know Sayaka’s here? Also, finding out why we’re here would be a big help too; not sure if I can trust anything a professor says yet. Huh? Wait a second-!
(The Pokemon from earlier? Jumps right off Sayaka’s shoulder in search of food.)
Uh…gotta go! Wait – come back! (The video cuts.)
Third Person Sample: Sayaka was utterly confused. One minute, she was brought back to life by Madoka’s wish, though she believes that she was rescued and has virtually no memory of what transpired or of even becoming a witch. Now…she was presented with a backpack with different clothes and items, a number of set ‘Pokeballs’ one of which contained a Starter and given instructions on what to do. Soon enough, she ends up going down a path unfamiliar to her but it corroborates with the earlier explanation. Before she knows it, she’s in a forest with her new ‘partner,’ a penguin who didn’t seem too keen on obeying her.
An example of this momentary bout of distrust? Sayaka had tried to get in touch with her friends, even had Piplup presented onscreen but the Water type smelled food and leaped off her shoulder! Sayaka quickly closed it and ran after him, catching up in almost no time but did give him some Pokemon food in her backpack. That task done for now, Sayaka bent down to the penguin’s level and smiled at him. “Look, I guess we kinda got off on the wrong foot so let’s start over: I’m Sayaka! You are?”
’Piplup!’ came the response, along with a sudden pose – Piplup placing his flippers on his hips and raising his head just so.
“Piplup?” Sayaka had been told that the ‘Starter’ was her Pokemon, would never leave her side and would fight for her. Aside from being…proud?...for the most part, the Pokemon had done exactly as she’d been told. “Awesome name, but maybe I can give you a better one! What about…Kyousuke or Kyubey?”
”Pip…LUP, LUP, LUP!” Sayaka cried out as she barely held up her arms for protection, not expecting to be blasted by a lot of…bubbles? Obviously that was a huge 'NO!' from Piplup.
“Okay, okay, those aren’t good names for you! Sheesh, just trying to help. How about…ooh, ooh! I’m a knight of justice, so…what do you think of Squire? Would that work?” The smile was back once more, Sayaka holding out a hand to accept Piplup’s flipper.
