Foremost, Kaoru is as selfish as Hikaru is. His world is incredibly tiny and is rather dependent upon Hikaru. Kaoru is the younger brother, and like Hikaru, he wants to be seen as an individual. However, at the same time, he doesn't want to let anyone know him. Or his brother. It's always been the outside world and then their world. Two are one. Their bond as brothers is precious. They cannot really trust anyone else.
He gets easily bored with things, again, like his brother. They share many personality traits, and have trained hard to become alike. He really has no qualms about stating what he likes, what he is bored of, and when to move on. Initially, after something gets old, the habit is to find a new toy to move on to. Kaoru is just as bad as Hikaru when it comes to things such as that. People are for their amusement. They work in tandum and have worked to synchronize their movements and actions. It's all a ploy. Everything is calculation and planned. They get the reaction they want because that is how they want it to go. If it doesn't work out like that, then that is annoying and then they should move on. They are bratty and very child-like, often acting like spoiled brats in complete and total disregard for others and what their needs would be. Anything goes when it comes to getting what they want. When together, they are loud and arrogant. They can be sweethearts when they want to be. However, that's only when they want to be. Which doesn't happen very often.
Which leads to jealousy. In most things, Kaoru is fine sharing with his brother. That doesn't go for everyone else. What is theirs... Is thiers.
However, what separates Kaoru from Hikaru is all in the thinking. Haruhi pointed out that Hikaru is one level meaner than Kaoru. And that's very much true. While Hikaru comes up with the ideas, Kaoru is the one that does a lot of the planning. He is Hikaru's support. He follows his brother, perfectly playing the little brother role. He is more sensitive than Hikaru is, being the first person to realize that he actually is in love with Haruhi. He is also the first to realize their problems as twins. Their paradox. Their contradiction. He isn't as brash and blunt as Hikaru is. Kaoru is more reserved in nature. He can refrain more than Hikaru can. He is also very capable of restraint and keeping his thoughts contained within himself. In many ways, he is a very analytical twin. He observes and takes in much more than he lets on. But because of that, he works well as a manipulator.
While Hikaru is direct, Kaoru isn't. He is sneaky about the things that he does ( like asking for separate rooms ). He will use what means that he thinks will work best. Usually that seems to mess around with other's feelings. The plans are elaborate and all ploys. Kaoru honestly has little faith in his brother's ability to see the world around them. The younger twin genuinely believes that his brother isn't bright enough to come to realizations on his own and will help by pushing him along. Even if it hurts them both in the process. He doesn't want to give up his brother, so he will make Hikaru be the one to do it.
This means that Kaoru plays with people more than Hikaru does or ever will, perhaps being more cruel in some aspects than Hikaru. The younger twin is not exactly honest or open, even though he displays a kind smile and a genuine concern about people here and there. Kaoru isn't forthcoming with what he wants out of life. Perhaps it is because he doesn't think about it, but rather his thoughts are usually on Hikaru. Though he is selfish, he puts Hikaru first above all things. It's a quality that Hikaru doesn't really much care for.
Which leads to the fact that Kaoru means well. He loves Haruhi, he really does. But he knows that Hikaru loves her more than what Kaoru himself does. Kaoru might have known from the beginning that it is supposed to be that way. His brother means more to him than anything. It’s one of the things that he realizes through going out on that date with Haruhi. That's why he wants nothing more than for Hikaru to escape the little world that they have created for themselves. He wants Hikaru to be happy above all else. That's his motivation for many of the actions he takes after a certain point in canon. Anything to support his brother and make him realize what he wants most, which isn't their secluded world.
However, just because he has given up on Haruhi for Hikaru, he does not want to give her up to anyone else. That means Tamaki. This is where some of that jealousy and ownership can also be seen. That means he will be as harsh on Hikaru as he feels is necessary. If there is one person he might actually be mean to, it’s Hikaru, his own brother. Kaoru does this because Hikaru really needs someone to be hard on him or else Hikaru won’t improve his behavior at all. As the more responsible and reasonable of the twins, Kaoru is the one that should, and does, take up this role.
Yet, as introspective as he is, he still thinks the bonds have to be completely destroyed. Kaoru's thoughts at the time where he tells Hikaru about the date is that the bond must be severed for them to be separate. That's the way it has to be right? Separate or together, there is no in between. It's wrong thinking, but he is the younger brother, after all. He might act like the mature one of the two, but he can't see everything. He's still just a child. Luckily there is always Hikaru to see the things that he cannot. Sometimes even the younger brother can be taken care of by the older in their relationship.
