Equius looked over the tops of his perpetually-cracked sunglasses at the Ponyta standing patiently in front of him. She snorted and lightly kicked at the dirt with one hoof, as if telling him to get on with it. The former troll grimaced and gingerly tapped a few keys on his PokeGear, reviewing the information in front of him. Despite his caution, it completely failed to shatter under his grip. Not even a little. The indignity of it was almost enough for him to consider commissioning a new unit made of weaker materials.
“It is quite admirable that you wish to continue proving your strength alone,” he continued, clicking the PokeGear shut and slipping it into his pack. “And you have done so excellently thus far on our travels. But I believe it would be for the best to acquire allies. If nothing else, there is an advantage in numbers.”
Motioning for the Ponyta to follow, Equius slid off the large rock he had been seated on and strode into the open grass of the route, Dark Cave at his back. He was quite sure he would be able to handle any Pokemon thinking of ambushing him during preparations, but it still seemed prudent to have something other than open space behind him. The suddenly-rising mountain also provided an easy landmark for navigation, on the extremely low chance that he managed to get lost.
“Keep a lookout for any of the rat-beasts,” he said, picking his way slowly across the ground. “I believe they are quite common, but I have been assured that they are top-percentage.”
The Ponyta gave another annoyed snort.
“They seemed a good choice for a first acquisition.”
Finally losing patience, the Ponyta charged past its trainer into the grass, snorting out a wave of Ember attacks that turned the grass to kindling in the summer's heat. Wild Pokemon began shooting out of the now-flaming grass, fleeing the heat and the Ponyta's attacks. The Ponyta herself briefly disappeared into the smoke and fire, emerging a few moments later chasing a Rattata. She bucked forward in a Tackle attack, sending the smaller Pokemon tumbling. It rebounded quickly, trading blows with the Ponyta a few times before the horse Pokemon seemed to grow tired and stomped down quickly on its adversary, trapping the Rattata under one firmly-planted hoof.
“...A bit direct, but effective, I must admit,” Equius said after a moment of silence. “I approve.”
