Despite the fact this Archer’s past is heavily kept a secret by comparison to what’s discovered about his counterpart of the main series, it’s heavily hinted at that these two are either one in the same or much of their history is the same in that he was once this person. Archer makes vague references to other characters of the main series in Fate/Extra, as well his estranged connection to Tohsaka Rin.

For simplicity sake, this Archer will be treated as a separate entity from the Archer of the main Fate/Stay Night series. Any relation to characters of the main series will be played by ear, but ultimately his connections lie with his current Master and those met throughout the Moon Cell’s Holy Grail War.

Personality: One does not gain the title of “No Name” by having much of his past being discovered. To that end, he can be considered quite the secretive person. Not much is known about his life before becoming a Heroic Spirit, but he is generally seen as something of a cynical individual, many of his conversations with his Master throughout the Holy Grail War ending in mostly harmless verbal abuse. At times this nature of his can make him come off as a grumpy old man as he reminisces about pieces of his past and about other topics not to do with himself, such as discussing vampires. Though he’s sarcastic at times, it’s also how he tends to give advice. He is not much of a liar but he keeps many secrets. Despite these tendencies, however, Archer is one who is all too familiar with the battlefield and when to be straightforward and to the point. To that end his devotion to his allies (particularly his Master) is unprecedented. As a Servant his life is dedicated to the one that commands him, ready to protect his Master with his life if needed be. That being said, in the Holy Grail War, losing one’s Servant is equal to losing your own life as a Master; with a strong fighting spirit and great wisdom and skill in his class, he always carries forward to the best of his abilities to obtain victory. Over time his overall attitude around his Master shifts to a more kind and protective role. Though there is an edge to his words from time to time, this shows that he is a soft-hearted hero deep down that can open up to the people he trusts and cares about. Along with opening up comes an easier time in actually teasing or getting Archer flustered. Though still difficult to do at times, his Master had learned to “bark back” so to speak and even nearly caused him to fall off his chair at one point (to which he tried to play off like it was nothing). To his enemies, however, he can be downright insulting and has a tendency to goad them on and taunt them.

It can be speculated, however, that his softer side is a shadow of his previous life. As a Heroic Spirit, Archer can be considered almost fictional in a sense. As Heroic Spirits are considered legendary in history, he is a rather unorthodox case as he is not a natural born hero. His name was long since forgotten by time, hence his identity is considered “No Name”, but he willingly sold over "his self after death" to the Moon Cell as a compensation for a miracle. This miracle was to save the lives of many people that he otherwise could not have done with his own power. To that end, Archer is considered the personification of an ideal. The “Ally of Justice”, a superhero that would save everyone even at the cost of his own life. Employed as a concept after his death, though Archer is shaped as the “Ally of Justice” people desired, he is considered a Servant instead of a hero.

The source of his ideal was once a young man who walked the path of a superhero. Though it isn’t concretely stated in Fate/Extra, it is speculated that the life that Archer lead as a Servant is similar to the one he lived in the main series, Fate/Stay Night. Betrayed by his own ideal after being forced to kill to save many more people, it could be one of the many reasons why Archer is the aged, cynical man that he is in the Moon Cell’s Holy Grail War. Ultimately, he remains devoted to his Master despite what is speculated of his past life, summoned to win the Holy Grail.

A hero with no name.
A fictional Heroic Spirit.
Faker.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

Strengths
If his past self is any indication, his housekeeping skills are absolutely exceptional, along with being a decent cook (Japanese cuisine being his forte). Strong and determined both in body and mind, Archer has a great tactical mind and can formulate strategies rather quickly. This comes from facing enemies that should be stronger than he is and single-mindedly focusing on the one thing that he is good at and perfecting it. With his powers, that comes down to Projection (or Tracing), a magecraft that involves analyzing the structure of a weapon (typically a sword) right down to the history and its user’s techniques and replicating the weapon for his own use. As far as Pokémon battles are concerned, this can easily transfer over into taking the strengths and weaknesses of his Pokémon and his opponent’s and assessing the best way to victory (or a tactical retreat if needed be).

Weaknesses

Though not exactly weak by any means, by comparison to most of the enemies he’d faced in the past, they were considerately stronger than he was. Relying on his cunning can only get him so far before he’s outright overwhelmed. Seeing as Archer has placed up so many walls around himself it’s difficult to see weaknesses in him. Vague as it may be, being reminded of his past (especially bringing up Tohsaka Rin of who brings up a suspiciously dodgy side of Archer) can cause him to effectively clam up. Though that is more of a typical case-by-case basis as he has discussed his past before with the likes of his Master, particularly his exploits as a hero.

Samples
First Person Sample:

[one would think that someone in Archer’s position would be more alarmed and worried, but if anything he almost seems…disappointed? no, that wasn’t the proper term. uninterested? close enough. he’s leaning against the back of one of the houses in New Bark Town where he’d just arrived, not thinking to leave down the designated Route 29 just yet. the PokéGear is in his grip and the video feed is on as his stern expression can be seen. thoughtful was the best way to describe his expression now…]

“A world of dreams and adventure with Pokémon awaits." [the dark-skinned man can’t help but close his eyes at that, smirking before shifting the focus of the device away from him and down to the little pink blob blinking up at its master with beady black eyes] Ditto?

This is going to be quite the adventure if this is supposed to be my partner. Seeing as my regular partner seems to be missing in action, I’ll have to make do with… ……. [he pauses, the camera still on the little Pokémon looking up at Archer expectedly before gleefully crying,] Ditto~!

I’ll call you Ditto. [somebody’s still getting used to the way naming a Pokémon works. but that’s the way it is. Ditto is Ditto, and the little blob seems perfectly content with that as it lays there beside its Trainer]

So then, [and now the focus is back on Archer, whose expression turns to something a little more serious] I’ve read this little “trainer’s guide” already. Guess my only choice is to head down Route 29. [his gaze shifts away from the camera for a moment, looking off in the direction of said Route 29 leaving New Bark Town]

That is, I would…if I was completely convinced. [he’ll get straight to the point, since he doesn’t know if someone will answer him or not when he speaks out] Where am I really?

Third Person Sample: “You can either follow me or get back in your ball. Your call either way.” Having spent enough time lingering around the edges of New Bark Town and getting accustomed to the way this world worked, Archer slipped his backpack on, the weight feeling foreign on his back. He was so used to not having to carry much of anything to begin with, or even having his weapons manifest in his grasp from thin-air. It had admittedly been an awkward moment for the red knight when he threatened his ‘Mom’ with a pair of swords that never appeared. Shouting ”Trace on!” when nothing happened? Thinking back on it even now caused him to frown, though any traces of a blush were hard to find on such a tanned complexion. Everything felt so bizarre and out of place. He could no longer feel the presence of his Master. No longer was there an influx of magic coursing through him as a powerful Heroic Spirit. Just the blood that made him…human.

(Human…)

That was exactly right. Archer was a human now. Though it initially caused him to panic (though his version of panicking would look very calm to anybody else), he realized that there was nothing to concern himself with. Even if he was still a Servant, his Independent Action ability granted to him as an Archer would allow him to last for a couple of days even without a source of prana. Despite the fact that it seemed he now had ample time to get his bearings straight, his priority now became that of either finding his Master or finding a way back to finishing the Holy Grail War. Strong as she had become, she was hopeless without him. Or maybe…just maybe, Archer was hopeless without her. Had their bond become that strong? Had they truly come so far together? Apparently so if it meant he doubted his existence in this world and believed it to be a Reality Marble at first. Though he’d come to accept his fate here in the sense that he had to play by the rules. No swords, just him and his new companion of a Ditto that fumbled behind Archer as he made his way out from New Bark Town. From a bystander’s viewpoint it would have looked as though the Servant didn’t care for his Pokémon, but his pace was much slower than usual. Enough so that the Ditto didn’t miss a single beat and stayed right behind its trainer, working desperately to keep up.

As he reflected on his predicament, it became all too perfectly clear that as a human, he may as well have been no different from his Master now. If anything…he was the Master and this Pokémon was the Servant whose purpose was to fight for him and protect him. Meaning that whatever was out there in this vast and wide world, Archer wouldn’t be able to take it on alone. And though his back had remained turned to the obedient Pokémon, it was for the sake that he had no choice but to lay his trust within Ditto to be the eyes in the back of his head. Archer would be the one to trek beyond the horizon and take on everything in front of him while Ditto would be the one to have his back. When he thought about it that way, it was almost comforting…

“… I don’t know what counts as exercise for you,” he suddenly stopped as he turned around to look down at the blob of a monster that looked up to Archer, seemingly confused as to why they stopped in the middle of the road as well. Seriously, he had no idea given its body type…or lack thereof. “But I’m gonna put you back in the ball for now.” Reaching for the little ball attached to the Servant’s waist, he clicked the button on the front of it to cause it to morph in size, pointing it down in the direction of Ditto. Just as he was about to return it, however… “…?” Ditto looked disappointed for some reason. Don’t ask how Archer was able to tell, but it wasn’t for the fact that it was being put back in the Pokéball. Was Ditto too slow? It didn’t want to disappoint its trainer since it wasn’t like most Pokémon. Before it could dwell on what it did wrong, however, Ditto was met with a small yet confident smile from the towering Servant.

“I’m the slow one here. If you want, I’ll teach you to keep up with me better when I’m ready. If I can run faster, I’ll figure out what I have to do sooner.”

If this really was all supposed to be real and he was away from the Holy Grail War, then Ditto was more familiar to this than Archer was. Archer was the one who had much to learn now. After a brief yet mutual staredown between Archer and Ditto, he couldn’t help but lightly huff and shake his head. “I’m cheering up a walking pile of goop…”

Despite his words, it seemed that Ditto understood what Archer had meant, perking up almost immediately with a smile as it waited for its master’s command.

“Return.”
