Character Name: Nagisa Aoi Series: Strawberry Panic Timeline: After episode 16 Canon Resource Links:Series | Characters | Episodes
Personality: At heart, Nagisa is a cheerful, optimistic girl. She always tries to look on the bright side of life, and while at times her optimism can be annoying, she generally has an easy time making new friends and getting along with others. She can be very trusting and always tries to see the best in others. She often comes across as naïve, and she can be ignorant of others' feelings toward her, especially romantic feelings. She's even initially ignorant of her own feelings; when she first meets Shizuma Hanazono, it's love at first sight for her, and it takes her some time to be able to actually talk to Shizuma and not just be stunned into silence by her presence, and it isn't until a good ways into the series Nagisa finally realizes that she's in love with Shizuma.
For the most part, Nagisa doesn't try to hide her emotions. Happiness, anger, confusion, embarrassment - her emotions tend to be clearly reflected on her face, whether she wants them to or not, and she's easily embarrassed when her friends tease her. There are times when Nagisa can also come across as whiny, especially when faced with a difficult problem, but she tries her best not to give up, even when she really wants to. However, when she's hit hard by a bout of depression, like when she believes the person she loves has rejected her, she tries her best to pretend to be happy, and unless she's confronted by someone really empathic, she's quite good at doing so, but she can't keep up such a façade for long.
Nagisa is easily excitable; at the beginning of the series, when she's transferring to a new school, she is nervous, but she's more excited about the prospect of exploring a whole new setting and making new friends, but this outgoingness also means that her brain can't catch up with her mouth, so she sometimes blurts out things without thinking, but she's usually quick to apologize if it's hurtful or especially stupid. She dislikes being confrontational, preferring to help others, even if she has to go out of her way to do so. She isn't afraid to show a little backbone from time to time, but that's usually when she's standing up for someone else rather than herself.
For all of her friendliness and openness, Nagisa can be quite clumsy and not very bright. Her grades, while not failing, aren't very good and she can be prone to misunderstandings and even acting on them before someone has a chance to correct her. In canon, she has to learn to understand French and how to waltz in a short period of time, but when she really tries her hardest (along with quite a bit of help from friends), she can make a plausible effort to overcoming her weaknesses.
To be blunt, Nagisa is not exactly subtle about her emotions. Upon waking up in a new world, she will be scared and disorientated, but once she gets her bearings and realize that she doesn't seem to be in danger, she'll be excited at the idea of starting a new chapter in her life. Of course, she'll still be worried about missing her friends and a whole lot of school, but she'll keep on a brave face and try to stay optimistic.
Strengths/Weaknesses: + Optimism; Nagisa is not someone who lets a few setbacks get her down. While she may mope sometimes, it's not long until she's back on her feet, and she tries her best to make friends and get along with others.
+ Compassionate; she'll often go out of her way to help others, and she's very trusting, preferring to see the best in others.
+ Energetic; even though she can be clumsy, she's reasonably athletic, and she's especially good at swimming and running. Even with dancing, what really gets her is the timing; she's actually a fairly decent dancer when she overcomes that flaw.
+/- Stubborn; she can be whiny at times, but most of the time she'll keep persevering no matter how many mistakes she makes or obstacles are in her way, but this also means that when she gets a misconception stuck in her head, she'll act on it before someone can correct her, which just leads to awkwardness for all involved.
- Naïve; she's ignorant about a lot of things and can come across as childish occasionally, although she becomes embarrassed when someone points this out to her. She doesn't pick up on subtle social clues easily, so it's easy for her to get the wrong idea about someone or something.
- Not very bright; her grades aren't that good. She picks up cooking and acting well enough, but when it comes to subjects like foreign languages or literature, she has a hard time understanding them. She doesn't learn well just by reading or studying.
- Easily scared; her biggest fears are the dark and ghosts, and even the mere mention of ghosts will send her into a fright. When spooked, she'll start screaming and turn into a sobbing wreck, and this only serves to tire her out even faster. She just can't handle things she can't easily see and comprehend.

Um, is this thing on…? [Taps the screen, and then giggles.] Hello everyone! My name's Nagisa Aoi, and this here is my new partner! [She holds up her Sandshrew.] Well, that's what I've been told. My own Pokémon partner… I used to dream about having one a lot when I was a kid. And here I thought I was too old for Pokémon now!
[Her Sandshrew starts sniffing the PokéGear, and Nagisa laughs again.]
It's like a fantasy come true! Especially since it looks like I'm stuck here, eheh… Actually, how did I get here? This can't be an entirely different world, can it? Oh geez, I don't think I can afford to miss that many days of school… [She lets out a heavy sigh, but then a smile is quick to return to her lips.] But if I'm going to be here for a while, I might as well make the best of things, right?
Third Person Sample: A world of Pokémon - even to Nagisa's overactive imagination it almost seemed too much to believe. Was she dreaming? She had to be; there was no way she could've left her Miator dorm room and landed in a video game of all things.
Except right now all evidence pointed to the impossible - both that strange device - a PokéGear, was it? - and that woman who had called herself "Mom" had told Nagisa the same thing: that it was time for her to set out on her Pokémon journey. And no matter what Nagisa asked, they just kept repeating themselves, so Nagisa just nodded slowly and decided to attempt to explore her new surroundings.
Now she stood outside the house she had woken up in, with her new Sandshrew standing by her side. She looked up at the clear blue sky, shielding her eyes from the sun. At least the weather was nice, she thought as she inhaled a deep breath. Even the air seemed fresher here. And maybe it was just her imagination, but she could almost swear she also heard music…
Shaking her head slightly to clear her thoughts, Nagisa kneeled down and gently patted the Sandshrew's head. "I guess we're partners now, huh?" she said, a smile forming on her lips. "So let's do our best, all right?"
The Sandshrew merely cooed in response, but it seemed just as eager as Nagisa was.
She couldn't help but giggle. "Hm, you need a name," she said, holding up her PokéGear. "This thing says you're a girl, so let's see… oh, how about Carmen? Well, maybe it's not that fitting, but me and my friends just finished putting on that play yesterday!" She put her Gear back into her bag and then scooped the Sandshrew into her arms. "From today onwards, your name is now Carmen!" Her smile widened as she straightened her back, and the newly-named Carmen let out an appreciative yip.
"Oh, you really like that name, huh? That's good!" Nagisa replied, and she felt as if her nerves were finally beginning to settle. She shifted Carmen to her left arm and then reached into her pocket with her right hand and pulled out a map, shaking it to unfurl it. "Okay, according to that lady we're right now in New Bark Town. Now, where should we go first…?"
As she looked over the map, she felt as if her eyes were beginning to cross. This region was a lot bigger than she imagined, and none of these names sounded familiar. Letting out a heavy sigh, she glanced down at her Sandshrew. "Looks like it's going to be a long journey, doesn't it?" she said with an awkward smile, and Carmen merely nodded in response.
