As a child, he's been pretty protective over the younger kids in the orphanage. Since then he's been looking out for others even though he's pretty rough around the edges.
In canon, Varon has a sense of honor that allows him to keep in check that he can do damage but he shows mercy. He was also the least cruel out of the Doma agents which made him very unpopular with his co-workers. He has a free spirit and he likes being free. He's honest in his emotions even if he chooses not to say the words. I think in this case, the Eevee would be a good one to start with since they are pretty adaptable to their surroundings and do exhibit the ability to understand their masters.
