Extended FAQ: Non-Player Characters
Scientists
Professor Elm: Professor Elm is the first professor met when one arrives in Johto. He's in his mid-forties and rather skittish, but a very kind man. His office is often messy, which is why his assistants are always necessary in terms of keeping things organized for him. He tends to be the first one on the scene when things go haywire in Johto, and often the first one to reassure people to remain calm... when he normally can't. Don't be surprised when he goes missing for days, though; sometimes he's just caught up in work. Or damage control.
Professor Oak: Professor Oak is the main professor of the Kanto region, though he travels between the many regions almost consistently to gather more information on the overwhelming world. As an older fellow, he's seen his fair share of chaos, and while the past few years have been the newest and most rapid in terms of changes, he tends to respond to chaotic situations with ease.
Professor Birch: Professor Birch is the resident professor of Hoenn. He's a family man and likes to get physically into his work, usually on field-exploration or on-site study trips; he's rarely home, and his wife has the rest of the professors on her contacts list when playing the "Where's my husband this week?" game. Birch tends to discover more things by accident when looking for something completely unrelated, and prefers going straight to the source when looking for answers instead of trying books first.
Professor Rowan: Professor Rowan is the savviest elder professor you could dare to meet. He is a very old friend of Professor Oak; rumor has it Oak studied under him when they were younger, though neither will confirm this. He's filled to the brim with knowledge, from pokemon evolution (his main specialty) to oak tables. He's also got a sweet tooth the size of Mt. Mortar.
Professor Sycamore: Another absent-minded but very kind Professor from the distant land of Kalos, Professor Sycamore adores the idea of pokemon finding their way and expanding their horizons. He tends to have many roaming about his office, and he prefers observing them adapting to their habitat than trying to maintain any major control. During Hoennween, he had a very laissez-faire approach towards the incoming swarms, but he followed it closely as it meant more to understand and learn about the world. He's also got a terrible fashion sense (don't ever forget his loafers, which are his best pair of shoes, mind you) and a heavy accent.
Assistant Professor Bianca: She's a new Assistant Professor from Unova, and a friendly face who visited from the first prom. Bianca loves mingling and getting to know people, though you're best finding her in the library with a notebook and
Apprentice Shauna: Shauna is one of the bubbliest faces from Kalos; she's a young apprentce working underneath Professor Sycamore and while she often comes to distribute items and information with him, she's also quite the social butterfly, eager to make friends and learn about everyone she meets. She's also pretty good at dancing, and puzzles.
Legends
The Legend of the Music Man
The Music Man of Pallet Town is a little old man of maybe 75 or 80 years of age. He lives in Pallet Town with his faithful Pokemon companion, a Patrat, and he has lived there all his life. He has actually never left Pallet Town; he's a very small-town comfort, homey kind of guy, and the wild world of Pokemon adventures was never for him. But he's a pretty sharp old guy, and he's a whiz with woodworking, so over the years to keep himself entertained he started making these puzzle boxes, enjoying the intellectual challenge and craftsmanship of carving them out and getting them just right. At one point he made one for a little girl's birthday, and she suggested he add the music to them, which he thought was pretty neat and so he did.
So after awhile he amassed this fair number of puzzle boxes, and ultimately he decided to start selling them to little mom-and-pop knickknack and crafty-type shops all across Johto and Kanto. All the boxes play the Pallet Town theme because it's the only BGM the guy's ever heard, and though he's never wanted to travel all over the world, it makes him happy to think of his boxes doing it, being taken here and there by trainers who treasure them, making people happy with their music and craftsmanship.
So he may not be on a Pokemon Journey to see the world, but he's more than happy with the thought of his little boxes doing it for him. And day in and day out, he and Patrat hang out together and carve little handmade treasures and just enjoy their simple, quiet life together.
As of about mid-May, 2013, the Music Man's talents branched out into other woodworking doodads as well, but he tends to make those more as novelties on request, since they don't take nearly as much care and thought as the boxes he's renowned for.
