APPLICATIONS!
Currently: Closed!
Route 29 has closed as of May 30th. For the continuation of the game, please visit [community profile] victory_road!

Applications will be normally checked during the weekend following the first and third Sunday of each month unless otherwise stated, and we will allow one application per person during one application cycle. Remember, the most characters one player can have at a time is currently set at five.

Applications received after 11:59 PM EST on Saturday of the first and third weekend of each month will be checked the following app weekend unless otherwise stated.

We now ask that potential applicants post their application in comments rather than linking. If their application contains explicit references to 'hard' spoilers (character death, unforeseen plot twists, big reveals, he was evil all along etc), players should put the application in their own journal or their character's journal and link it, making sure to mention the presence of spoilers within. For further clarification on our spoilers policy and whether or not your application needs to be linked, please check this page. Thank you for your cooperation!

The comment character limit on dreamwidth is 16,000 characters so apps no longer need to be split into multiple comments; however this is at players' discretion.

Please use the form below and post your application in comments rather than linking if you can. If you have any questions, feel free to ask either of the mods. You can reach us through emails, IMs, or PMs.

A reminder for those waiting to hear back, please don't be worried if we skip yours while going through them. It only means we needed a little more time to research!

Personality:

When one looks at Naoya initially, one can't help but notice the hallmarks of a 'big bad' - white hair and red eyes and a deeply sarcastic and flippant attitude generally are a bad sign. As more is learned about him, however, one starts to see that perhaps he's not so bad and perhaps he has justification for being how he is. In the course of canon one sees him at both his best and his worst, both as the helpful older brother figure and as the ages old Cain. He's initially presented as a caring if somewhat trolly older brother figure, though technically he's the protagonist's cousin. He's grown up with the protagonist, though, so the brotherly bond is still there - for good reason, considering that he's Cain and the protagonist has a piece of Abel inside of him. It seems fairly clear that he doesn't truly want to kill him - no one wants a repeat of what happened five thousand years ago - but if the protagonist wants to go and serve God he'll have to get through Naoya first. Naoya sees God as a meddler and someone all too willing to remove humanity's free will, and anyone in His corner has to be taken out, or at least closely watched.

There's evidence to support the idea that he was a good student and a loving nephew to his aunt and uncle, mostly in the artbook where it's stated that he has 'two sets of memories' - one is him-as-Cain with thousands of years of rage, and one is him-as-nephew who cleans the dishes and helps take care of his cousin. The two aren't really separate people, but more of a split between following his heart which is new every incarnation and following his mind and soul which have stayed the same for thousands of years. It's nearly outright stated that he influenced the protagonist a lot. There's various times where dialogue options let the player choose if they want to have the protagonist know something about computers and technology, which makes sense given that Naoya shows an interest in and mastery of those topics. It's easy to see Naoya as the person who held the protagonist's hand through his baby steps and helped him with homework.

That's not to say that the protagonist hasn't influenced Naoya as well. In the Law route's eighth day there's a showdown that has the newly crowned Messiah challenged by Okuninushi, the creator god of Japan, to 'bring salvation' to Naoya. Though full rehabilitation seems impossible at this point, it's stated that Okuninushi has 'seen a droplet of water in the thousand-year-old ice' when Naoya comes to help in the fight against the god, which apparently is enough to declare the challenge completed. Given that it's likely nothing but revenge has moved him to his core in thousands of years, this is a major development. Him-as-Cain and him-as-normal-human seem to be closer than they have been, and it's a good direction for him. While he's not going to start singing the Hallelujah Chorus any time soon, he's at least moving in a more healthy direction.

To people who aren't his cousin, he tends to keep up the cover of 'intelligent but cold young man'. He'll go to a bar and drink, but he's not really the type to socialize. He's more of the type to keep himself in the corner and listen to what other people are saying - after all, they could be useful in the future. Most people to him aren't much other than tools and pieces to be moved for his own ends. Occasionally he'll find someone of particular interest, and those are the people he strikes up friendships with - or at least the appearance of such. But to have a true friendship with him would mean to actually understand him, and Naoya seems to think that no one ever really will. His experiences, after all, are unique - and once someone reincarnates, they'll forget all about him. That's how the world works, and it leaves him as a somewhat lonely figure. Why have love, if he'll lose the person soon? Why do anything involving other people that isn't useful for him if they'll forget him?

That's not to say he doesn't interact - but he takes the longer view of things. Doing things for the benefit of others isn't out of the question, but if he does it, it's for the indebted feelings the others will have for him, not for some kind of 'greater good'. While he does like humans, and he does want the best for them, he doesn't exactly put the needs of the many over his own. Yes, he does think that his route will be the best for humans, but the main goal he has is for his own salvation and cure. Everything else is incidental. He may come off as selfish and cruel because of this, but it doesn't matter to him. He's suffered long enough.

Naoya is a patient man. A man who doesn't try to rush things, not unless he has to. He turns things in on time and is the sort of person who studies when he has to, but allows time for the little joys in life - watching TV, playing video games, tutoring someone who does have a spark of brilliance. Life, though painful, does have its joys, and while he's seen things over and over again he's starting to see once more that there is still some good in the world. Humans are determined, and there will always be those that resist a tyrant, and there will always be people who will care for even the worst of humans.

That said, Naoya still has problems when his plans are foiled. He doesn't like it when people defy him. He's older, he knows what he's talking about! His anger has a long fuse, but once it's burnt out the results are explosive - sometimes literally. He tries to be patient, and he tries to keep his wits about him, but there are some topics and actions he just can't allow. Even with all of his experience, he has trouble grasping certain things - like why people would follow God. That's not to say that he'll go off on everyone, but there are certain people who just push his buttons. He does not tolerate stupidity well in people he thinks should know better, and while a pun might get a deadpan reaction out of him, the wrong answer from someone who just listened to him explain it drives him up the wall. He sees these things as a sort of blindness - and a willful type of it. It drives him absolutely insane.

Oh, he has his little humanizing aspects - he loves sweets and traditional Japanese fashion, and is the sort of person who will take on an apprentice to pass on his skills - but ultimately he's a man who's in pain. He's obsessed with his goal, and has been for thousands of years. Naoya is a person who has a great deal of skill and drive, and will put his mind to any puzzle that he sees in front of him. He's not the kind of person who gives up. After all, for any problem in front of him, he has nothing but time. Why should he ever give up on anything? Everything has an answer - you just have to find it. It's just a shame that most people are too blind to see most of the problems in front of them. If they had the long view that he does, they'd see where their true enemies are.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

+ Planning/strategy/problem solving. Give Naoya a problem, and he will find his way around it or through it. This is a man who sets things in motion for generations down the line. The amount of time he has to spend on a problem doesn't bother him - as long as it gets done.
+ Programming. Naoya is considered a genius programmer - for good reason, because he figured out how to summon demons using emotions from the internet. Security systems mean nearly nothing to him, and this fits in with his problem-solving abilities - he regards a complicated security system with the same level of ease most would regard a child's jigsaw puzzle.
+ People-smarts/emotional manipulation. Naoya has lived and died as hundreds of different people. He's lived countless lifetimes and has seen all sorts of people from all walks of life. He knows what typically pushes the buttons for nearly any emotion, and knows what people respond to and what they fear. It doesn't take much for him to be able to pick up on someone's emotions… and, if he so chooses, say just the right words to get them to trust him.
+ Agility. Naoya is fast - even without the addition of magic. He's just speedy and can balance on geta easily which is not a simple task.
+/- Perfect memory. Naoya is a walking textbook of history, languages, and technology. Living for so long means that he's seen history firsthand - from the fall of Babel to man walking on the moon. He knows so much and remembers so much - and cannot forget a thing. This causes physical pain on occasion, though he masks it well, and also means that he suffers from flashbacks and nightmares that he also masks.
- Stuck in the past. For someone who has moved forward with history, Naoya is stuck on his own past. His plotting has one aim - to end his curse and let him die permanently. Occasionally this causes him to overlook things in his rage, or to discard solutions that might be more beneficial to him if he could only let his pain go.
- Grudges. Naoya keeps grudges for a long, long time - even if they're not as serious as the one he has against God. Every insult is remembered, and if he sees enough to cause him to retaliate, he will.
- Terrible with plants. Cain was originally a farmer, but as a result of his curse he was effectively banned from ever raising crops again. It's not to the point where they'll instantly wither and die on him, but plants (and grass-type Pokemon) simply just don't grow very well for him.

I've a question for you today, for those of you who care to listen. No points for this one - it's not on the test.

If you could change one thing in history, what would it be? Would it change you? There are those who would argue that to change history would be to change the world, since we are the product of our environments.

Then again, there are those who would argue that God would know in advance everything, so changing things would only be part of His plan and nothing would really change.

I'm interested in your answers. History has always been fascinating to me. I wonder how much about what you would change you really do know - since history is written by the winners.

Leave a comment below and we'll have a discussion. Feel free to respond or not respond as you see fit.

Third Person Sample:

'Spiritomb. The Forbidden Pokemon. A Pokémon that was formed by 108 spirits. It is bound to a fissure in an Odd Keystone as punishment for misdeeds 500 years ago.' Naoya raised his eyebrows at the text on his screen. Only one weakness and three immunities. Well… he did luck out. Though he had to wonder what sort of strange being had brought him here - because whatever it was had a strange sense of humor. A hundred and eight… the same as the number of temptations, and also a spirit bound to something as punishment. He sighed and reached up to pat the thing around the forehead area. His hand passed through, but the Spiritomb still seemed to appreciate it.

"We do make quite a pair, don't we?" He'd still not decided on a name for the thing, though a few possibilities were there. The spirit was calm as he pulled up his map, looking through it. "I think we should train a bit more, and build up our roster before challenging a Gym." The spirit scowled, and Naoya sighed. Was this what he had to deal with? A spirit that was childlike and troublesome? Honestly, it was almost like having Loki around again. Maybe he should name him that, though that was almost asking for trouble.

This world, for all its strangeness, was a welcome relief. No running, no hiding… and no Abel. He'd made his choice and Naoya would watch over him, but that didn't mean he had to like it. That malevolent force called God had exerted His influence on his brother, and mankind's free will was now forfeit. Not the decision he would have made. Not a decision he wanted to live with, either, but he had no real choice. But at least… at least here he was freed from His reign, at least for a while.

Naoya gestured to his side, and the spirit slowly dragged himself towards him. He would follow, but not happily, and Naoya had to chuckle at how much they were alike. Perhaps whatever had brought him here was benevolent after all.
